The demand on pile installation in the offshore of the Arabian Gulf has, over the last two decades, experienced unprecedented boom, triggered by the construction of platforms, to help facilitate the production and transport of oil and gas. Available borehole data show that ground conditions for pile installation in the offshore is highly variable, resulting in misassessment of insitu conditions, leading to a huge discrepancy between ultimate pile capacities, based on design, and actual capacities after installation. The paper makes use of pile installation records derived from several platforms in the offshore of the state of Qatar, the Gulf Region. More specifically, the paper evaluates “as–installed” ultimate capacities and safety factors, recommends remedial installation procedures, and proposes a means for determining pile acceptability for piles meeting refusal short of design penetration. The paper offers what is believed to be relevant recommendations to guide the design and installation of future offshore structures; enabling the geotechnical community in the Region to solve their current offshore pile installation problems and gain an added margin of confidence regarding the ultimate capacity of installed piles.

"Auger cast-in-place (ACIP} piles and drilled displacement piles are being increasingly used as foundation elements for structures, particularly in projects requiring accelerated construction or involving the rehabilitation of foundations of existing, overstressed structures. Auger cast-in-place piles (also referred to as continuous-flight-auger piles) are widely used to construct the foundations of all types of structures. There are many different types of drilled displacement piles, with the installation methods varying according to the equipment used. Depending on the specific rotary piling technology used, responses ranging from those associated with non-displacement to those associated with full-displacement piles are obtained. Conventional pile design methods do not account for how the various construction techniques involved in auger piling change the soil state around the pile during installation and, hence, cannot accurately estimate the pile resistance in a consistent way. Research on this subject, identifying the different variables that must be accounted for in design and linking these variables to installation methods, is lacking. This paper describes the different piling methods available for auger cast-in-place and drilled displacement piles, the equipment used to install them and the quality control processes typically used. It also reviews some of the design methods currently used.IntroductionDeep foundations are extensively used in geotechnical engineering practice. The wide spectrum of piling methods results in a variety of pile types. Each type behaves differently, depending on the installation or construction methods. On one end of the spectrum are non-displacement piles, the classicql examples of which are bored piles or drilled · shafts. These piles are constructed by removing a cylinder of soil from the ground and replacing it with concrete and reinforcement. On the other end are full-displacement piles, such as closed-ended pipe piles or precast reinforced concrete piles, which are typically driven into the ground. Driven piles preload the materials below the toe of the pile and displace the soil surrounding the pile shaft laterally during the installation process. Therefore, displacement piles are, in general, more likely to have a stiffer response than non-displacement piles. This is true particularly in the case of sandy soils where displacement causes densification."

"As governments increasingly accord high priority to sustainable energy, policymakers are finding that wind energy has a long track record as a proven alternative to conventional energy supply.Over the past two decades, wind turbine projects have been constructed offshore because of more stable offshore wind conditions and because there is more available space for large wind farms out in the open sea. Vindeby Wind Farm in southern Denmark was constructed in 1991. As the world’s first offshore wind farm, it provided valuable information and experience for researchers and designers that have led to new technologies and design improvements, a trend that will continue as more offshore wind farms are constructed. Today, the world’s capacity of the installed offshore wind turbines exceeds 1,000 MW. Most of these are installed in Northern Europe where there was early political support and favorable conditions, such as strong winds and relatively shallow waters. Offshore wind projects are now under development around the globe, including continental Europe, the U.K. and North America. ‘The largest offshore wind farm today is Denmark’s Nysted Offshore Wind Farm, which has a total capacity of approximately 480,000 MWh, equivalent to the yearly consumption of 120,000 households. It is five to six miles offshore in the Baltic Sea in the southern part of Denmark.The owner is a joint venture between DONG Energy of Denmark and E.ON Sweden. Bonus Energy (now Siemens) supplied the wind turbines, and P. Aarsleff A/S and subcontractors supplied the foundations. The contractor’s consultant, COWI A/S of Denmark, developed and designed the turbine foundations. With a total capacity of 165.6 MW, the project consists of 72 Bonus 2.3 MW turbines in water depths up to 33 ft. The turbines have a hub height of 226 ft, and the turbine blade diameter is 270 ft. The rotor and nacelle (the structure that houses the generator, gearbox and other equipment) weigh approximately 150 tons, and the weight of the steel tower is approximately 130 tons. The wind farm site is located in a relatively protected area of the Baltic Sea, but during the winter months, the water often freezes and the foundations needed to be constructed to resist ice forces. The founding soils at the site are overconsolidated clay tills with boulders and with a thin layer of softer surface sediments. Pockets of up to 30 ft of soft sediments were encountered, which required special foundation preparations."

"Friction fatigue is the loss of soil-pile friction around the shaft area of the pile. It has been observed during impact driving of piles, and has been modelled to a limited degree using physical scale models. This paper proposes the use of high strain dynamic pile testing to assess and quantify friction fatigue in impact driven piles. The method is applied to two case studies: one on a project off the north-west coast of Australia and one on a South Pacific Island. On both sites calcareous sand layers are present. Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) monitoring has been conducted during impact driving of steel piles, which allowed for assessment of shaft resistance development both with depth and with progressive driving, by use of wave equation signal matching. Lessons are drawn from the case studies to improve future observations.INTRODUCTIONFriction fatigue is the loss of soil-pile friction around the shaft area of the pile, under cyclic loading or during pile driving. The phenomenon has been frequently observed in some non-silica sands, such as pumice sands and calcareous sands and has been the subject of academic study.The occurrence of friction fatigue impacts the driving behaviour of piles and the shaft friction component of the ultimate geotechnical strength (Rd,ug). If potential friction fatigue is not recognised in the design phase of a project, required pile toe levels can be significantly underestimated. This could lead to extra cost and delays, or, if no adequate pile verification is conducted, to geotechnical failure or underperformance of piles. This is especially true in remote locations, such as Pacific islands, where calcareous material is often present.A better understanding of the phenomenon would aid both pile design and driveability assessment. This paper proposes the use of high strain dynamic pile testing to assess and quantify the effect of friction fatigue from impact driving. Two case studies are presented in which high strain dynamic testing has been conducted on driven piles in calcareous sands to illustrate the method.BACKGROUNDFriction fatigueThe geotechnical strength of piles is composed of the resistance to static loading by the base of the pile and the shear resistance between the shaft of the pile and the adjacent soil. The latter is often referred to as the shaft resistance or shaft friction.During impact pile driving, a decrease in shaft resistance is often observed. Although this phenomenon is also observed during vibratory pile installation, this paper deals predominantly with impact driving. This decrease in material strength from the tip of the pile influences the shaft resistance and may be either temporary or permanent. Temporary reduction in shaft resistance is common in cohesive soils and is thought to be caused by excess pore water pressure, which has insufficient time to dissipate. This phenomenon, commonly referred to as set up, is observed to a significantly lesser extent in non-cohesive materials such as clean sands (Rausche et al., 2004)."

In the digital era that we live in, connectivity and mobility play a decisive role in our daily activities. In this context, insufficient telecommunication infrastructure gives origin to the so called “dead zones” (areas with poor or non-existing cell phone reception), which hinder economic development in small communities and in many rural areas, since they remain invisible to a larger marketplace due to the inadequate cellular coverage. Several countries are working to identify these dead zones and with this information, establish strategies together with mobile providers in order to improve the existing mobile networks by expanding the coverage areas. As a result of the analysis, it is expected that thousands of telecommunication towers for 4G and 5G networks will be erected in the coming years. Telecommunication towers are slender elements that require large shallow foundations to verify primarily the safety against overturning. However in remote areas, it can be advisable to consider alternatives to the conventional shallow foundations, in order to optimize the use of materials (concrete, reinforcement steel, etc.). The following article presents an overview of intervention projects, where telecommunication towers were founded on micropiles. The micropiled foundations allowed to reduce considerably the dimensions of the originally planned shallow foundations. Furthermore, the use of micropiles allows for additional optimization, in combination with pre-fabricated foundations (i.e., precast concrete elements, etc.). This paper will focus mainly on the design and the execution of the micropiled foundation.

"Bluestone Dam is a concrete gravity structure with an overall length of 2,060 feet and a maximum height of 165 feet above the streambed. Several major project modification designs have been implemented and additional modifications are currently in construction and design phases. Due to the various modifications since original construction was completed in 1948, detailed documentation with visualization of the project features is needed. A three-dimensional model of the internal and external features of Bluestone Dam was generated from LiDAR data, survey information, and other data sources. One of the key features of interest in this model is an accurate visualization of over 200 dam anchors based on downhole anchor surveys. The model is accessible in Microstation and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), allowing users to rotate the anchors in three dimensions; view them in the context of geology, internal dam structural features, historical construction records, site photographs, bathymetric data, and instrumentation data. Users can “click” on individual anchors to view associated construction details and open a comprehensive installation packages. The model will be used by the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) as part of a larger Geospatial Data Management System as a historical accounting of the project construction data, and be a long-term living document for use by both design engineers and operations staff to assess dam safety risk and to design future project modifications.IntroductionDuring the life of any project, critical data concerning the construction and performance history are required to be collected and maintained. The data collected prior, during, and post-project construction help with the design process, ensure that the project is built to specifications and is performing as per design intent. During the Post-Implementation Evaluation (an evaluation performed after a major project modification), these data are used to visualize the repairs, verify the construction was performed per design intent, and document the history of the construction phases, associated test results, and overall effect on the project. The project described in this paper is the construction of a system of tools to effectively use these data.Data collected and maintained during the operations phase helps to ensure that the project is continuing to perform as per design and aids in advance warning of any potential failure or required maintenance. Dam Safety, Emergency Management (EM), and Operations and Maintenance personnel can use the system to verify the status of the project in preparation for a high flood event. For example, if there is repair work being performed on a critical feature of the project that would affect the operation of the dam structure during a flood event, Operations personnel would be responsible to update the status of the system such that Dam Safety and EM would be able to identify the feature that is out of service, its date of expected repair completion, and the implications during a flood. In addition, risk assessments typically require a full history of the project and its performance. Any concerns that arise concerning the safety or performance of a project will require a full documented history of the project and its components. Proper documentation and data management are key in this assessment process."

After a brief introduction of the whole Project, the paper describes two special geotechnical engineering solutions provided within the scope of the Galataport Project, in Istanbul, Turkey. The first refers to the new quay of Salıpazarı, which is a combination of retaining structure and ground improvement, formed by a combiwall, a reinforced concrete diaphragm wall and a soil improvement by deep soil mixing (Turbojet). The second, refers to the soil improvement works executed underneath three existing buildings. Single-fluid jet grouting columns had the scope of improving the mechanical properties of the bearing soil and reducing the associated risk of liquefaction. A set of underpinning micropiles was installed in order to allow the excavation of a partial basement inside two of these three buildings. All activities were conducted from inside the existing buildings, with reduced headroom. The paper highlights the importance of employing cutting-edge technologies within the foundation engineering field and state-of-the-art electronic control devices, in parallel with the essential human expertise, in order to obtain the desired results in this high-profile Project.

Upon recently, most offshore foundations were based on a number of driven piles that were installed with an impact hammer. With the increase in offshore windfarms two major developments have occurred: the shift from jackets to monopiles, leading to increase of the diameter of the foundation piles, and a shift from impact hammers to vibro hammers. As the use of vibratory hammers is becoming more and more common practice, the need for accurate vibro-driving simulation software has increased, which requires that the soil modelling is enhanced to address soil fatigue during pile driving and to predict reliably the soil behavior and resistance during pile driving. In addition pile driving monitoring, which is routine for piles driven with an impact hammer, needs to become common practice. This paper addresses advances in soil modelling that allows more accurate pile driving simulation as well as the application of Vibro Driving Analysis (VDA) or Monitoring (VDM) to validate the simulation results. This is illustrated by a case study of the test pile for the Delft Offshore Turbine project, a 28 m long monopile with a diameter of 4 m that was driven 15 m into dense sand layers using a vibro hammer. After some 6 months the pile was extracted, and pile driving simulations and VDA were done both for the installation and extraction phase. 1. INTRODUCTION At the end of 2017, the total worldwide offshore wind power capacity was 18.8 GW [1]. The vast majority of offshore wind farms are currently in Northern Europe, which together account for over two thirds of the total offshore wind power installed worldwide, followed by East Asia, while developments in North America are still in very early stages.

"Drilled shafts are increasingly being used to support bridge and building foundations. Because these foundations usually carry very high design loads and often serve as non-redundant, single load carrying units, these foundation systems need a high level of quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) during construction. One such method for providing QC/QA is crosshole sonic logging (CSL) testing, in which ultrasonic signals sent across the drilled shaft concrete assess concrete quality.CSL testing is an effective tool to evaluate the integrity of the in-place drilled shaft concrete. While typically used to evaluate drilled shaft concrete after construction, CSL testing can also be used to evaluate drilled shaft repairs. This application can be difficult, given the variability of repair methods and material properties. CSL testing can also be adversely affected by the condition of the concrete/access tube bond, leading to false anomaly detection and/or inability to evaluate concrete integrity effectively. This phenomenon, called access tube debonding, is often located in upper portions of the drilled shafts where large changes in groundwater occur, such as within tidal zones.Two case histories showcase innovative uses of CSL testing to deal with consistent access tube debonding and to evaluate drilled shaft repairs.CSL OverviewCSL testing involves placing ultrasonic transmitters and receivers in access tubes installed in the drilled shafts prior to concrete placement. Concrete quality is assessed by examining the First Arrival Time (FAT) and relative energy of the signal sent between the transducers. If the distance between the access tubes is known, an apparent signal velocity (i.e., wave speed of the ultrasonic signal through the concrete) can also be determined and used to assess concrete quality.Common CSL testing practice consists of simultaneously raising the ultrasonic transmitter and receiver and recording the ultrasonic signals with respect to depth. "Pile response under combined uplift and lateral load is very important and it is imperative to evaluate the effect of combined loading and only few studies were reported on pile behavior under combined uplift and lateral loads. Model pile made-up of aluminum having an outer and inner diameter of 25.4 mm and 19.4 mm respectively is used. Dimensions of the model steel tank are fixed as 1.0 m x1.0 m x 1.2 m (depth) to avoid the boundary effects under combined lateral and uplift loads. Experiments were carried out on single piles at isolated uplift, isolated lateral loading and combined lateral and uplift loading, embedded in sandy soil. Results indicate that load–deflection behavior is nonlinear for isolated uplift and lateral load tests as well as in case of combined loadings. It is also observed that the behavior of piles under isolated loadings is substantially different when compared to combined loading.INTRODUCTIONPile foundations are generally used to support compressive loads from superstructures. Some structures, like transmission towers, mooring systems for ocean surface or submerged platforms, tall chimneys, jetty structures, etc. are constructed on pile foundations, which have to resist large lateral and uplift loads and moments. The various loads (compressive, lateral and uplift) and moments act on the piles simultaneously rather than isolated manner. There are well-established theoretical methods present to evaluate the pile behaviour under different isolated loadings namely, verticalcompressive, vertical-uplift and lateral (Poulos and Davis, 1980), but there are very limited studies focused on pile behaviour under combined loadings. Though there is good number of studies reported on pile behaviour under combined compressive-lateral and compressive-uplift loadings (Ramasamy, 1974; Jain et al. 1987; Zhang and Small, 1999; Dash and Pise, 2003; Karthigeyan et al. 2006 & 2007; , there are only very few studies reported on pile behaviour under combined uplift and lateral loads. Darr et al. (1990) described an approach to a rational solution of the interaction of pile to combined uplift and lateral loads based on analytical and experimental studies. Influence of cyclic loading was also considered. Narasimha Rao and Prasad (1993) investigated the uplift behaviour of pile anchors subjected to lateral cyclic loading. There were many onshore and offshore situations where lateral cyclic loading may affect both the pullout and lateral loading capacity of pile anchors. Jetty and wharf structures are usually subjected to lateral forces from wave and wind action. If these cyclic lateral loads are acting on the supporting piles, the resulting movement of the upper part of the embedded length of pile may reduce the skin friction. This progressive deterioration in pullout resistance may not be reflected by a pullout test made soon after the installation. Hence, Tomlinson and Woodward (2008) pointed out that a generous safety factor on the ultimate pullout load should be adopted for piles in such situations. Mroueh and Shahrour (2007, 2008) presented a threedimensional finite element analysis of the response of battered piles to the combined lateral and vertical pullout loads. Nevertheless, the model is not validated well due to lack of good experimental data based on rigorous experiments. Thus there is a scope for investigating the effect of lateral load on pile behaviour under uplift load and vice versa based on carefully designed experiments, which is main focus of the present investigation."

"Kenneth A. Huber, P.E., Langan Engineering & Environmental Services, New York, New York, USAThe dream to bring New Jersey Devils hockey to the largest city in New Jersey became a reality in the summer of 2005, when construction began for the Prudential Center in downtown Newark. The Prudential Center site encompasses an entire city block that had a varied history of uses ranging from a cemetery in the late 18th century, to a rail yard and train station for the now-defunct Central Jersey Rail Road in the 19th and early 20th centuries, to commercial development in the latter half of the 20th century. Each of these prior uses presented challenges to the design and construction of the Prudential Center that required innovative engineering solutions, including: archaeological investigation and exhumation of the former cemetery occupants, protection of historic buildings surrounding the site, and extensive demolition to remove old train bridge foundations.The design team was required to develop potential foundation systems for the arena. Several foundation concepts were evaluated for cost and constructability, including: driven piles, drilled shafts, and shallow foundations on improved subgrade. Following a detailed cost analysis and value engineering exercise, the decision was made to support the arena on spread footings following the completion of a multi-phased ground improvement program consisting of a combination of dynamic compaction and removal and replacement. To evaluate achievable allowable bearing pressure as part of the design, a dynamic compaction test section was performed within the building footprint prior to the start of production work; this resulted in an increase of the allowable design bearing pressure from 2 tons per square foot (tsf) to 3 tsf. This reduced the expected foundation costs by 30% and gained sufficient time in the schedule to allow for the completion of the arena in time for the New Jersey Devils 2007- 2008 hockey season.BACKGROUNDThe dream to bring New Jersey Devils hockey to the largest city in New Jersey became a reality in the summer of 2005, when construction began for the Prudential Center in downtown Newark. After several years of negotiating between the City of Newark, local landowners, area developers, and the Devils themselves, a deal was finally struck to erect Newark Arena, now known as the Prudential Center, right next to City Hall. This is not to say, however, that once the site location was finalized, that no further challenges were encountered in the construction of Newark’s new crown jewel."

The study of geotechnical history is well-established. Most geotechnical practitioners, teachers, and graduate students have some grasp of the origins of the field. However, this understanding often consists of a jumble of names and anecdotes. This paper discusses how a deeper comprehension of geotechnical history can benefit academia and practice alike and describes how the authors have begun a wide-ranging study of the subject. The paper reviews the dual-track methodology the authors have generated for the study, which consists of written articles about different works in geotechnical history and a database tracking how often pieces have been cited in geotechnical literature. The first technique has shed light on aspects of geotechnical history such as the connection of the Darwin family to the origins of geotechnical engineering, the St. Francis Dam failure of 1928, and the rivalry between theoreticians and practitioners in the early days of the field. The second has helped quantify subjects such as the outstanding contributions of Karl Terzaghi, the disagreements between Terzaghi and Donald Taylor, and the specialization of the field over time. The paper concludes by discussing the authors’ planned future work on geotechnical history.

The magnitude of settlements depends on several factors, such as soil type and stratification, ground water conditions (degree of saturation), pile type and method of pile installation (driving energy). A method of settlement prediction due to construction-induced vibrations has been presented by Massarsch (2000). However, in many cases, an engineering assessment must be made at an early stage of a project. The following simplified procedure can be used to estimate settlements in a homogeneous sand deposit adjacent to a single pile, Fig. 5. This approach is based on extensive experience from soil compaction projects. It is assumed that intense densification due to pile penetration occurs within a zone corresponding to three pile diameters. The volume reduction resulting from the propagating vibrations will cause settlements in a cone with an inclination 2V:1H, with the tip at a depth of 6 pile diameters. Thus the settlement trough will extend a distance of 3D+L/2 from the centre of the pile, with maximum settlements at the centre of the pile. Maximum settlements, Smaxand average settlements, Smax can be estimated using the following relationship, choosing an appropriate a value of the soil compression factor, from Table 2.The driving energy depends on the method of pile installation, soil stratification and the pile type. The displacement volume of the installed pile has been neglected. The simplified method is applicable for estimating settlements at the perimeter of a pile group. It should be noted that settlements also occur outside the assumed cone, but these are often negligible. The effect of incompressible layers should be taken into account by adjusting the effective pile length."

"As there are only limited numbers of bored pile constructed in sandstone and siltstone in Thailand, load transfer and settlement behavior of a pile in these rocks are still not fully understood. Major factors which influence the performance of the pile in the sedimentary rock should be systematically investigated. The objective of this paper is to analyze load distribution and load-settlement behavior of bored pile in sedimentary rock. Interpreted data was obtained from instrumented load testing results of large-diameter bored piles. These piles were drilled in aeolian soil and socketed in sandstone or siltstone, having socketed length varying from 1 to 3 times the pile diameter. Factors that influenced pile settlement behavior, consisting of rock type at the pile base, socket length, at-rest earth pressure and rock conditions, were analyzed. For interpretation of results, analytical solutions were used to estimate load bearing capacity and calculate settlement of each pile. According to test results of mobilized unit skin friction in siltstone, relationship of 0.1 – 0.3 square root of the unconfined compressive strength of rock appears to reasonably capture the measured shaft friction. Note that shaft movement in siltstone layer was not fully mobilized as maximum pile head settlement was still less that 1% of the pile diameter.INTRODUCTIONExtensive research of bored pile construction in soft soil in Thailand and Myanmar (Boonyarak et al., 2016; Aye et al., 2015) has been carried out. However, behavior of bored pile in weak rocks such as sandstone and siltstone is still not fully understood. Unit skin friction and unit end bearing of piles in these weak rock were reported by Horvath et al. (1983) and Pells and Turner (1980), respectively. Further research is still required to minimize variation in data presented in their study.This paper presents interpretation of load testing results of instrumented piles. These piles were excavated in aeolian deposit in the Northeast Thailand. Some piles were socketed in sandstone or siltstone. Analysis results of load-settlement, shaft shortening, pile settlement estimation, factor for calculating shaft friction and end bearing are reported. Discussion and explanation of pile behavior in sandstone and siltstone is provided.BRIEF INFORMATION OF THE PROJECTProject locationsThe construction sites are located in Khon Kaen and Nakhorn Ratchasima Provinces in the Northeast Thailand. Bored piles in this project were designed for supporting elevated structures for railways, overpasses and U-turn bridges for vehicles. These overpasses and U-turn bridges are distributed along the existing railways with the distance of about 180 km."

"The new east span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bridge features a single tower self-anchored suspension (SAS) bridge. During construction of the SAS bridge, a temporary bridge was used to support the box girders until erection of suspension cables was completed. The transfer of deck load from the temporary bridge to the suspension cables was achieved in November 2012 and the SAS bridge has become the largest of its kind in the world. The new bridge will be in service in Fall 2013.Large diameter driven steel pipe piles were used for the temporary bridge foundations at Towers D, F and G located in San Francisco Bay. At Tower D, the large diameter steel pipe piles were driven through thin overburden into bedrock using a large Menck MHU500T hammer with a rated energy of 550 kJ. As there was no precedence in driving open-ended pipe piles into the Franciscan Formation bedrock, challenges were faced with uncertainties in drivability, driving stresses, pile embedment in bedrock and pile capacity. These uncertainties were addressed by incorporating additional measures into the pile design, and by the use of dynamic pile monitoring during initial driving and re-strike. Pile relaxation was observed during pile installation.At Towers F and G, setup effect was a key issue for the piles driven into the deep soft marine sediments. Drivability analyses were conducted to predict pile run, driving stresses, selection of hammer and refusal criteria. The piles were dynamically monitored during driving to estimate pile capacities. Due to the set-up effect in the Bay Mud, the piles gained up to 3.3 times the initial capacity during the re-strike and were in excess of the design capacity.This paper presents details of the design, construction, testing and performance of the driven pipe piles at temporary Towers D, F and G. Settlement data of the temporary tower foundations while in service confirmed the satisfactory performance of the pile foundations.INTRODUCTIONThe new east span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge features a single tower self-anchored suspension (SAS) bridge, the largest of its kind in the world. The new east span replaces the existing double-deck steel bridge built in the mid-thirties. A span of the existing bridge had collapsed during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake but was repaired. Construction of the new east span commenced in 2008 and is expected to be completed for the Labour Day opening in 2013. Figure 1 shows a schematic (looking north) of the new bridge with its 160 m high main tower T1 in the middle, and Piers W2 and E2 at the west and east ends, respectively. The west and east spans of the SAS bridge are 180 m and 385 m, respectively.During construction of the SAS bridge, a temporary bridge, complete with towers and trusses, was used to support the box girders of the new permanent bridge until the loads from the box girders were transferred through suspension cables to the permanent bridge. The transfer of deck load from the temporary bridge to the main cable was completed in November 2012."

Pile load tests are regularly used to verify pile capacities. Sometimes, they are used to optimize pile designs. This paper presents a case study based on a real project, in which the information obtained from load tests during construction was used to shorten the design pile lengths without a formal decision analysis. In this study, a simple probabilistic model was used to assess the probabilities of failure based on design information. The Bayesian approach was used to update the probabilities given the additional information from load tests. These probabilities were then used in a formal decision analysis to determine the optimal pile lengths based on design information and based on the additional information from load tests. The optimal pile lengths are different from those implemented in the project without a formal decision analysis. The value of the formal decision analysis is illustrated by its ability to optimize the pile length in a transparent and defendable way.

How many times have you heard "You can't drive piles because of the vibration."? You hear these words come out of the mouths of owners, engineers, and contractors. When a piling contractor hears this, he can almost always do a psychological profile of the individual uttering these words of wisdom. If the owner makes the statement, we know the odds are about 95% that the owner owns the building next door or he wouldn't care what happens to it; or the guy next door has threatened to sue the owner if he even so much as walks across the site of the proposed new building. If the owner owns the building next door to the new construction you can also be just as certain the old structure has undergone settlement. If the statement comes from the mouth of the contractor, it is usually just a case of him being inexperienced.

"Diaphragm walls are known as underground structural elements commonly used for retention systems and permanent foundation walls or elements. In addition they are also quite often used as deep groundwater barriers, named Cut-Off-Walls (COW). Due to the requirements of each particular job site, e.g. the need for carrying high loads or as seepage barriers, there is an increasing industry demand for efficiently cutting into rock. Besides the removal of boulders, cutting through rock, is always the most difficult part of the excavation process of a diaphragm wall or COW.There are a number of influencing factors which have an impact on the rock cutting performance. Besides the influence of the rock characteristics itself, which is not always the same, there are other factors related to equipment, tooling as well as the operating staff. In addition to RQD, the most commonly available rock property found in geotechnical reports is the Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) value. There are however some other related properties, such as weathering, bedding, inclination, abrasiveness, etc.,which can have a major impact on the achievable cutting performance. This paper will discuss the various parameters, and how they can be considered for performance estimation. Based on experiences gained on over 100 projects, a performance estimation chart was developed to allow for a better approach to these kinds of projects. This paper also explains the general installation process in as well as some specific features related to specific site conditions. Pile foundation is widely used in construction of marine structures. In offshore & marine piling work, drilling/boring supporting fluid is used to stabilize the borehole (excavation) prior to tremie concrete. The poly-fluid is a synthetic drilling granular polymer characterized by high molecular weight.it is mainly used for the preparation of stabilizing and lubrication mud in drilling of deep foundations. Disposal of polymers after using it into the sea, pollutant the sea environment, which may be harmful for living organisms inside sea. To reduce the pollution in offshore/Onshore, it is essential to take the precautions during flushing operation with proper recycled, reused & it’s Disposal. To provide economic and environmental solutions, used slurry was treated with addition dose of fresh material/polymers. The amount of fresh materials/ Polymer to be added can be decided based on (viscosity, density and pH value) test results. Finally, initiate water flow and air agitation as required. Run the tests on the re generated slurry before transferring to storage tank. Also, after storage, polymers will be reused for next operation. Moreover, mud wastage coming from borehole will also be disposed at suitable dumping places.

"Two of the greatest challenges we face in managing our aging infrastructure are to perform accurate condition assessments and to realistically predict the risk of non-action. The aim of this paper is to discuss common pitfalls we face in performing accurate condition assessments of our aging infrastructure using the case history of a recent near miss at the Lake Manatee Dam in Central Florida. The dam was placed into service in 1967 and was inspected every couple of years by dam safety engineers beginning in 1978. Although there was substantial and repeated evidence of a serious piping and internal erosion problem in each of these inspections, the problem was overlooked by most of the inspection teams. In 2012, the inspection team concluded that: “the Lake Manatee Reservoir Dam is well maintained and is in very good overall condition.” However, in 2013 a new team inspected the dam from an entirely different perspective, identified potentially serious conditions, performed an integration of the historical inspection data and concluded that: 1) the Lake Manatee Dam was in a severely distressed state; and, 2) without an immediate intervention there was a high risk of an uncontrolled release of the reservoir most likely following a large rainfall event and prolonged opening of the service spillway. This case history highlights human factors contributing to the near miss including group think and focusing on changes from prior inspections. The integration of historical inspection data is recommended for managing our aging infrastructure.INTRODUCTIONThe engineering analytical techniques most appropriate for assessing an aging infrastructure can be distinct from those used for the original design. To adequately manage our aging infrastructure it is necessary to change our perspective from anticipating failure mechanisms and designing to prevent them to assessing condition, detecting the presence of potential failure mechanisms, and assessing the potential risks. In many circumstances the failure mechanisms currently active may not have been anticipated by the original design team.We have developed a substantial body of experience in the design of our infrastructure. Full scale and laboratory testing coupled with the application of scientific principles to model behavior has led to many powerful design tools. The continued serviceability of our infrastructure as its elements reach their design lives stands as a legacy to our profession. However, under the sustained effect of limited resources for maintenance and rehabilitation parts of our infrastructure are in a highly deteriorated state. Unfortunately, the condition of some of these has not been properly assessed. This paper focuses on the Lake Manatee Dam in Central Florida and the process used to clearly identify its highly deteriorated state. While there are many factors that contributed to the lack of a proper assessment of its condition, the focus herein will be on human factors and in particular how “Group Think”, “Aversion to Bad News”, and “Condition Assessments Based on Changes to Prior Condition” may have contributed to not properly identifying the development of a serious failure mechanism."
