Indian National Steel Policy envisages ambitious three fold rise in steel production by the year 2020. This paper covers the iron ore industry in India which cater to the need of iron ore requirement of Indian iron and steel sector as well as export commitment in addition to addressing the industry?s key concern to attain the same. The main contents are (i) resources and its exploitation; covering status of exploration, reserves and resources, province wise occurrences, distribution, nature of mineralization and generation of fines, etc ; (ii) use of iron ore in iron and steel making, covering physical and chemical requirements for pig iron and sponge iron production; (iii) ore characteristics and beneficiation practice in vogue; (iv) projected steel demand and requirement of quality iron ore and provision thereof; (v) recovery of iron values from in situ low-grade ores and stacked fine rejects (-10/-6 mm) inclusive of slimes (-0.15 mm) from tailing ponds; (vi) agglomeration of fine concentrates preferably by pelletization; (vii) measures to augment iron ore availability for future requirements.

"Due to the depletion of easily treated coarser ores, more mineralogically complex ores with smaller valuable mineral grain sizes are treated, the means to liberate these minerals lies in grinding finer (Partyka & Yan, 2007). Grinding to these fine sizes is energy intensive, and using standard ball mills are energy inefficient at these sizes (P80 < 75µm). Therefore, stirred mills are becoming increasingly prevalent in the mineral processing industry. In order to optimize these mills, the effects and mechanisms of the significant variables need to be understood. This paper investigates a laboratory scale vertical stirred mill (Deswik mill) in an ultra fine grinding application of a South African platinum ore. The operating variables that are considered are stirrer speed, media size, media filling, and slurry density. The resulting grinding efficiencies are considered in two ways. Firstly, a statistical model is fitted to identify the effect of the significant variables on grinding efficiency, and secondly, the grinding efficiencies are also considered in terms of a stress energy model to determine whether this can partly explain the grinding mechanism in this mill. A factorial design of experiments was used on three levels for each variable, such that only linear interactions, second order interactions and two variable interactions are included in the statistical model. The results show that tip speed, media size, percent solids and mill filling are all significant to the grind, at differing energy inputs in the grinding process. The interaction effects of these variables are also dependent on the energy inputs. The results also found that the Kwade stress energy model is applicable to this mill and can be very useful to find the most efficient operating conditions for this system. The most energy efficient operating conditions in terms of mill speed and media size were typically somewhat below the standard operating conditions and it is expected that this is most probably done in order to increase the grinding rate, but at the expense of sacrificing some grinding efficiency."

The research and development of new, more selective collectors in order to improve flotation efficiency represent one of the main priorities in the development of innovative technologies pertaining to flotation separation of various substances and minerals. The use of collectors’ mixtures is considered as the universal instrument for ensuring necessary proportion of chemically and physically sorbed collecting reagents in every individual case. Currently hard-dressed, refractory ores and man-made raw materials, which are characterized by low content of valuable components, fine dissemination of mineral assemblages and similar technological properties of constituent minerals, are widely involved in the recycling processes. The possibility of processing tailings, which are left after flotation beneficiation, has been considered in the case study of tailings of the Zhezkazgan beneficiation plant and the Tishinsk copper ore deposit with utilization of the modified multifunctional flotation reagents. Modified poly-functional collector is the mixture of composite Aerofloat, TC-1000 and butyl xanthate. Reactants ratio is 1:1:3. The advantage of the suggested flotation reagents is that they are composed of two polar groups and have a long hydrocarbon radical. This structure, being in the water during flotation process, plays a dual role: first, as a collector adsorbing on the mineral surface it produces metal complexes with polar groups in the form of bridges; second, apolar radicals flocculate valuable slimed components, thereby intensifying flotation process. It has been shown that flotation of Zhezkazgan tailings with utilization of the lesser modified reagent amount compared to butyl xanthate has enabled to produce crude copper concentrate with 13.0 % copper grade and 80.22 %recovery. Compared to the baseline technology, copper content of crude concentrate has been increased by 5.1 % and the recovery by 31.4 %. It is shown that tailings flotation of the Tishinsky field by applying modified collector allows for increase of the of useful components extraction in a collective concentrate with: copper 9.63 %, lead for 8.41%, zinc 9.2 %, iron 2.73 %, gold 3.57 %.

"The separation of fine or even smaller size mineral particles with conventional methods is inefficient due to the specific properties of fines (small mass, high specific surface area, and high surface energy per unit area). Hence, the production of high-grade concentrate with high recovery is very difficult to impossible and a significant share of mineral values is lost to the tailings. The aim of the current research is to investigate the possibility to efficiently separate value minerals from gangue of fine particle size. The objective of the current work is to develop separation schemes of fine mineral particles by combining an initial stage of particles agglomeration with the use of collectors (hydrophobic agglomeration) with a subsequent conventional separation method. In the current research, magnesite was used as mineral value to be separated: a) from quartz, and b) from mineral mixture (serpentine, ilmenite, and olivine). In each case, tests on single minerals and artificial mixtures were carried out. After hydrophobic agglomeration, the separation of magnesite from quartz was achieved by settling; in the second case (gangue: serpentine, ilmenite, and olivine), magnetic separation of the co-agglomerated gangue was applied. In both cases, the results of the preliminary tests on single minerals suggest that the separation of mineral value is feasible and efficient. These findings were also confirmed from the results of the tests on artificial mixtures of magnesite and gangue, either quartz only or mineral mixture. Both separation schemes provided with magnesite concentrates of commercial grade (95% magnesite) with high recovery. INTRODUCTION The generation of fine particles is inevitable in many operations of mineral commodities processing. Especially in the case of low-grade ores, the mineral value is finely disseminated in the ore, and considerable liberation occurs at a fine size range. Although there is not a uniform classification system with respect to mineral particles size, fines are usually characterized the particles with a size range of -100µm+20µm, very fines those of -20µm+5µm, ultra fines of -5µm+1µm, and colloids smaller than 1µm (Sivamohan, 1990)."

Pentlandite samples were obtained as Ni concentrate from three Canadian plants and one specimen sample from Ward?s Scientific Establishment. The samples were upgraded using gravity and magnetic separation techniques. Nickel concentration was determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Microprobe analysis identified a range in Co and Cu lattice substitutions. All samples exhibited similar zeta potential-pH trend with isoelectric points from 2 to 3, and similar responses to copper activation and addition of xanthate. The similar trends indicate that the variations in lattice substitution identified have no significant effect on electrokinetic properties; that is, samples from any source likely yield results that can be generalized.

Mineral flotation is effective over a relatively narrow particle size range of approximately 10 µm to 150 µm. If the upper particle size limit can be increased, however, a run-of-mine ore may be coarse ground, and only the middlings are ground further to achieve required grades. This will result in significant energy savings and increased throughput. In this communication, methods of increasing the upper particle size limit will be discussed on the basis of a flotation model that can predict flotation from both hydrodynamic and surface chemical parameters. An example of increasing flotation recovery by control of a chemistry parameter is given.

There are some problems in the beneficiation of fine-grained oxidized iron mineral such as high cost, severe sliming, poor results and low recovery due to the fine disseminated size of the mineral. Taking several representative types of finely-disseminated oxidized iron minerals as examples, the author analyzed the main difficulties in the beneficiation of such kind of ores and discussed the existing problems in grinding-classification, technological process, flotation reagents and separation equipments and the resolvents of these problems.

Doré process is unique way to treat precious metals in the copper electrorefining plant, since it uses anode slime as a raw material. In this pyrometallurgical process, also slag is produced together with Doré metal. However, the process is never ideal, and a part of metal is always lost into the slag. By using Doré slag as raw material for simply mineral acid leaching, some of the lost elements can be extracted and recovered, thus, increasing the sustainability and keeping metals in the circular economy loop. The Doré process itself is developed to convert almost all precious metals and PGMs in the Doré metal, leaving other elements into the slag fraction. The Doré slag consist of slag formers, such as borax and silica based minerals, but contain also traces of sealing materials. In addition, the Doré slag is rich in metals present in the anode slime, such as Cu, Bi and Sb, which are not converted into the Doré metal. There are only few published applications at the precious metal plants, where conservative grinding and flotation circuits have been utilized for the enrichment of valuable metals present in the Doré slag fraction (Godbehere, P.W., 1983; Segawa, C. and Kusakabe, T., 1996). However, the present study shows an alternative approach for the recovery of metals present in the Doré slag by hydometallurgical approach. The study focus on direct mineral acid (aqua regia) leaching of metals present in the Doré slag. The initial dissolved concentrations of Cu, Bi and Sb from Doré slag in the temperature range of 30-50 °C under oxygen purging with addition of 1 vol-% of H2O2 are presented. Chemical and mineralogical analyses were performed for the raw material, leaching residue, and leaching solutions in order to ascertain the leaching behavior of the metals of Bi, Cu and Sb.

"Enargite is a significant penalty mineral in the copper industry and its separation from many copper sulfides by flotation is difficult. The separation may be crudely achieved using selective oxidation techniques or through the use of pulp potential control. This paper summarizes our latest contributions to a better understanding of enargite surface electrochemistry and hydrophobicity. Oxidation, roughness, hydrophobicity and species formation on the surface of natural enargite were examined by a novel experimental approach that combines electrochemical techniques, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and droplet evaporation tensiometry. It allows for synchronized electrochemical control and examination of the oxidative surface morphology, speciation and hydrophobicity of enargite at pH 4 and pH 10. At low pH, surface layer formations consisting of metal deficient sulfide and elemental sulfur were identified associated with a limited increase in roughness and heterogeneous distribution of surface species produced by initial rapid dissolution of Cu, followed by diffusion limited surface layer deposition. At high pH, a similar diffusive mechanism associated with oxidation products consisting of copper sulfate and hydroxide and a significant increase in surface roughness were established. Receding contact angle measurements showed no significant difference in the contact angle on a surface oxidized at pH 10 and the freshly polished surface. Contact angle increased from 46° on the polished surface to 59° after oxidation at pH 4. Competing effects of hydrophilic copper oxides and hydroxides, and hydrophobic species of elemental sulfur on the mineral surfaces under oxidizing conditions at pH 4, and the change in surface roughness at pH 10, contribute to the changes in enargite hydrophobicity under electrochemically-controlled oxidation conditions. Most likely, both surface species and surface roughness produced by oxidation are critical to the changes in the wettability of enargite and other sulfide minerals."

"A study was made of chemical and material compositions of the oxidized gold-bearing ore of the Kochkovskoe deposit. It was demonstrated that examined ore consisted mainly of quartz, carbonate and feldspar with a gold content of 2.2 g/t and a silver content of 6.1 g/t. By means of agitation leaching tests it was founded that about 79-80 % of gold can be extracted from ore using cyanide leaching solutions. The achieved high-speed dissolution rate of gold was due to its presence in a finely dispersed state (less than 2.73 µm), which was confirmed by the research of Uralmekhanobr. It was proposed that the ore can be processed by heap leaching process using cyanide leach solutions. Technological studies on the modeling of the heap leaching process were initially carried out in percolators with a capacity of 5 kg on agglomerated ore. It was preliminary established that agglomeration should be carried out at a cement consumption of 12-16 kg/t, with the moisture content in pellets reaching up to 10-12 %. The best percolation leaching results can be obtained with ore crushed to the size of -20 mm. The maximum extraction of gold to the solution was 79-80 % while the L:S ratio reached 1.2-1.4:1.In cooperation with the research center of OJSC ""Berezovsky mine"" a semi-industrial heap leaching test was accomplished. The result of a test performed was an extraction of 78.5 % of Au and 21 % of Ag from ore to a pregnant solution. This extraction degree was achieved at a L:S ratio 0.9: 1. On the ground of results obtained, a technical regulation was developed for design of the heap leaching plant with the capacity of 500 thousand tons of ore per year.INTRODUCTION The ore of the Kochkovskoe deposit represents an important reserve of gold in the Zabaikal region. In view of the shortage of soft water all over the Middle East countries, seawater may be used to replace the fresh water in flotation beneficiation. The flotation process required about 7 m3 of fresh water/ ton ore. This article aimed to study the effect of seawater cations and anions on the flotation process of four important mineral commodities. The adsorption of collector, zeta-potential, zero point of charge and floatability of pure minerals were studied. The individual effects of different cations and anions that are predominant in seawater, within their more or less actual concentrations were studied on individual mineral and on groups of them. The troublesome Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions, in the anionic circuit could be controlled by soda ash addition to the pulp before the anionic collector. The addition of sodium silicate improved the floatation selectivity of mineral mixtures and natural ore. At the optimum conditions the calcareous phosphate ore yielded a concentrate recovery of 83% with a grade of 34% P2O5, with 0.61%MgO, which from an ore assaying (25.3% P2O5 and 9.4% MgO).

A significant part of the currently production of the non-ferrous and precious metals is from sulfide ores. Character feature of sulfide ores is the presence in them always pyrite and wide range of different sulfide minerals else. These minerals are the carriers of valuable for industry metals. Due to the low content of the main components, very often call on the use of collective- selective flow-sheets. The extraction of minerals in the collective concentrates determined in a large extent the effectiveness of the collective-selective sheets. In conditions of bulk flotation kinetics to floatate of the various minerals is different. Due to why it is and how it can be used for a more effective selection of minerals ?this is the main task of this report. For this purpose are used results from the bulk flotation of pyrite, copper sulfides, molybdenite, galena, blenda. It is separated and place of host rocks. Base it of large experimentation material, including both electro-kinetic measurements of mineral systems, as well as laboratory flotation tests and factories monitoring it is established kinetics of flotation of mineral particles in conditions of collective flotation. Made an effort to clarify the effect as of the species and the proportion of different sulfide minerals involved in flotation pulp else. Traced was the impact of the density and aeration of the flotation pulp on deferens in kinetics of mineral flotation in condition of balk flotation. The obtained results are used to increase the efficiency of the diffraction flotation of the complex sulfide ores containing precious metals. Low molecular weight synthetic polymers substituted with hydroxyl, carboxyl or sulfonate functional groups were used to improve the flotation separation of zinc or copper sulfide minerals from iron sulfide gangue minerals in three massive sulfide ores of different mineral composition. These polymers produced significant improvements in zinc or copper grades as a result of a selective depression of iron sulfide minerals. It was shown that this selectivity was the result of preferential adsorption of the polymer on the surface of the iron sulfide minerals. The different types of interaction between the functional group on the polymers and the sulfide mineral surfaces could explain the trends observed in the flotation results.

"The study of the properties of mineral processing suspensions is important in understanding how a circuit might behave. As soon as the predominantly dry ore enters a wet milling stage the ore properties undergo changes as a ‘slurry’ is created. Slurries can be classified in terms of their physical properties (particle density, solids concentration, particle size and size distribution, particle shape), and their flow properties such as rheology. Slurry flow regimes are classified into true homogeneous, pseudo homogeneous, heterogeneous and fully segregated, and only true homogeneous and pseudo homogeneous suspensions can be characterized by their flow structure. A class of the heterogeneous regime are the so-called dense phase or settling slurries - those which result in a clear water surface on standing, although they may approach a pseudo homogeneous state if suspended for a sufficient period of time. They are usually extremely difficult to characterize by their rheological properties alone and the rheological characterization of these slurries has always posed a problem, especially at higher concentrations. Previous rheological studies have focused on the individual concentrator units dealing with milling, classification, pumping, flotation, fine grinding, thickening.In this work an attempt was made to characterize two ore types (copper and a Platreef platinum ore) using a custom built Paterson and Cooke tube rheometer, at concentrations up to 43% by volume. After applying a turbulence correction, results showed Bingham plastic behavior. A conventional vane rheometer was then used to compare the rheological behavior of platinum concentrator streams. A size criteria was used to identify any rheologically dominant streams."

The Sydvaranger magnetite mine was shut down in 1996 due to low iron ore prices. It was reopened in 2009. The flowsheet has remained more or less as in the old plant, based upon two grinding steps followed by magnetic separation. The Sydvaranger magnetite is free of harmful elements and should therefore be sold on the high quality market. This requires a concentrate containing less than 2 % SiO2. In the old plant, this grade was achieved by amine flotation. Amine was preferred as collector because it could be used in process water from the sea. The use of amine has been restricted by the Norwegian pollution authorities during the time the mine was shut down. Test work to replace cationic with anionic flotation is therefore done. Research on activation of quartz with Ca or Mg ions prior to anionic flotation was shown by basic research in the period from 1960 to 1980 to be effective under simplified laboratory conditions. This old research has now been followed up from a practical/empirical point of view. The basic work was mainly done on quartz and iron minerals only. In this case, an actual feed containing a number of minerals common in iron ores is used, in order to demonstrate that a commercial process is possible. Calcium activation is shown to work excellently but requires too high pH to be environmentally and economically attractive. Magnesium activation is a more difficult process, because the maximum concentration of MgOH+, which was shown to be the activator, is about 100 times lower than the alternative CaOH+. Flotation success depends partly upon the ore, some amphibole minerals are more difficult to float than pure quartz. Ordinary batch flotation test work is time consuming. A South African microflotation test cell has shown promise, because work can be focused upon flotation of the more critical coarser fractions of the Sydvaranger ore. The extensive laboratory investigations were carried out in order to determinate behavior of sulphide and nonsulphide copper bearing particles during the flotation. The present ore sample were contained 0.55% Cu with 20.1% of nonsulphide copper in it and gangue material with higher contents of alumina about 19.07%. In this paper will be presented some results such as: effect of particle size, pH and applied collectors. The main goal was in application of collectors S-7518, as well as mixture of KEX and Z-96. Z-96 is a product from Chemical Industry Zupa Krusevac which was used as auxiliary collector in mixture with xanthates. The best results were done with this mixture in ratio KEX / Z-96 as 77/23 % in area of oxidized minerals flotation, but the collector S-7518 was achieved better results in sulphide mineral flotation. The S-7518 has better selectivity between copper minerals and pyrite comparing to mixture of KEX/Z-96 in mentioned optimal ratio. Flotation recovery and copper grade in concentrate were studied by flotation kinetics tests.

This paper is concerned with the coalescence behaviour of two bubbles in dilute solutions of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, methyl isobutyl carbonil and triton x-100. Two bubbles were produced at the tips of adjacent capillaries and the time elapsed between the first contact of the bubbles and film rupture was determined by means of a high speed camera. It was found that the amount of surfactant required to stabilise the bubbles increased in order of CTAB>TX-100>MIBC. The probability of coalescence decreased sharply with increasing surfactant concentration in CTAB and TX-100 solutions while with MIBC each bubble pairs resulted in coalescence, giving hundred per-cent coalescence probability.

"This paper is devoted to ultrafine grinding of processing products. This process allows one to include into operation complex ores which earlier were considered as inefficient and economically inadvisable to treat. Fine dissemination of valuable component often does not allow its liberation via standard grinding in ball mills, and therefore requires modern methods of ultrafine grinding (UFG). An example of successful ultrafine grinding usage is its application for crude flotation concentrates regrinding before cleaner flotation stages. A problem often arises with a commercial copper concentrate production in the course of copper ore flotation. Crude flotation concentrate regrinding in a ball mill does not provide for good liberation of the material before cleaner stages. UFG application allows one to get commercial copper concentrate with copper grade of 20% and higher. Another example of ultrafine grinding application is its usage for highly refractory pyrite product received after gold-lead scavenger flotation of polymetallic ore. Earlier this product treatment was economically inefficient. At current application of ultrafine grinding down to 85% minus 20 µm and subsequent gravity processing it is possible to pass major part of gold (73.4%) into concentrate. The constraining factor for UFG application in processing may be the chemical activation of minerals. In the result of this, flotation selectivity may decrease. Therefore ultrafine grinding application extends the areas of efficient usage of metallurgical processes. New technologies allow increasing the level of valuable metals recovery."

Clay sorbents from the North Bohemian Brown Coal Basin represent important but still some-what neglected accessory raw material. Submitted paper is concerned with relation between mineral structure, sorptive efficiency and reclamation exploitation of these rocks. Characters and localities of main clay sorbents from the North Bohemian Brown Coal Basin are shortly evaluated in an introduction. In next part, methodology of mineralogy survey for these accessory raw materials is stated, it is based on diffract analyse with D 5000 Siemens X-ray diffracto-meter. At the conclusion results are stated of mineralogy analyses from several clay sorbents. The determination of the zeolite and montmorillonite localities was accentuated. The paper presents also possibilities of practical clay sorbents utilization, especially by reclamation works.

"It is relatively well-established in the literature that the flotation of calcium minerals using fatty acids as collector is very sensitive to the process water composition. In particular, hard waters have often been reported to strongly reduce the target mineral recoveries due to the formation of insoluble compounds such as calcium and / or magnesium dioleate, thus reducing the amount of collector available for adsorption onto the mineral surface. In this study, the flotation of a fluorite pre-concentrate was performed with tall oil, an industrial collector essentially containing fatty acids. The tests were performed in a variety of synthetic waters to simulate multiple degrees of water hardness, and to differentiate the role of magnesium and calcium ions on the flotation performance. The flotation tests revealed that, under the studied conditions, a significant difference between flotation in calcium-rich and magnesium-rich waters was observed, suggesting strong ion-specific effects in the system. Specifically, calcium-rich waters slightly improved the fluorite recovery, whereas magnesium-rich waters caused a decrease in recovery by as much as 20%. This paper is focused on the flotation kinetics aspect of the system. This approach highlighted the interesting finding that calcium ions did not simply increase the fluorite recovery, but also significantly increased its flotation kinetics. The magnesium ions, on the other hand, had the exact opposite effect.INTRODUCTIONAs the mining industry is facing an increasing number of issues related to its fresh water consumption, the idea of using alternative water sources for mineral beneficiation is gaining significant momentum. As a result, a proper understanding of the role of water chemistry in flotation is becoming more and more urgent, leading to an increasing number of studies on this topic."
