Human well-being is the extent to which individual share the ability and the opportunity to live the kinds of lives they value it includes environmental security, good health and living conditions, all of which are closely related to each other. The breakthroughs, which transformed the human race, have close interdependency with the environment. With the increase in world population, the requirement of natural resources is increasing every day. The nature is still stronger than man is but we must use natural resources more responsibly. The key to our well being is sustainable development Development effort for human well being may have adverse impact on the environment also. To keep the net impact positive is critical for sustainable development. For mineral processing industry, the value of a mineral is in the actual value as perceived by the end user. The process designs, investments in technology development all have direct relationship with the value of use and making a net positive impact on our ecosystem The value proposition has shifted towards raw materials and is a big differentiator. The availability of good quality raw material is difficult or is available at a premium. The challenge today is to develop green technologies that make effective and efficient usage of low grade raw materials The low grade raw materials as available pose a significant opportunity for human race for delivering value. They offer an easier reach to a value as perceived in end use but the journey is full of challenges. The first challenge is development of technology for maximizing grade recovery as required by the downstream process. The second challenge is to make the technology viable so that it contributes value to end use and the third challenge is to keep the net impact of the process positive The mining and mineral processing fraternity, being at the beginning of this value chain is set to take the first step in this journey for a tryst with ultimate human well being. The results of research on recovery of ammonium perrhenate from by-products of lead production are presented in the article. For the first time in the world, rhenium marketable products were produced on lead plant of Kazakhstan. Distribution of rhenium in lead production has been studied. During oxidative agglomeration of lead charge, 67.43% rhenium is sublimated and at that, 67.27% rhenium is trapped by the dusts of a system of gas purification, out of them 6.21% is transferred into different solutions, 1.89% into slime and only 0.09% into exhaust. During agglomerate smelting, up to 72% of its rhenium is sublimated and condensed in the dusts also. At leaching stage of sulphate product under dusts processing by the method of sulphatization, 15% of its content in the dusts is transferred into solution. The sorption method on the ionite ?N-21 has been proposed for recovery of rhenium from the solutions of sulphatization. At the same time, rhenium recovery from the dusts into commodity was 13%. The method of direct hydrometallurgy - leaching the dusts by solutions of sulphuric acid under presence of manganous concentrates, has been proposed as alternative method of recovery. This method has allowed increasing recovery of rhenium and other metals from the dusts into solution up to 90%~95%. Rhenium solvent extraction by ??? has been proposed for recovery of rhenium from the leaching solutions. At that, extraction of rhenium into marketable product from the dusts is above 75%.

"The Reflux Flotation Cell (RFC) consists of an inverted fluidized bubbly bed, located above a system of parallel inclined channels. This novel arrangement enhances the hydrodynamics of flotation in a number of ways. Firstly, the free-surface of the flotation cell is enclosed via a fluidized bed distributor, ensuring uniform application of wash water to promote desliming. Secondly, foams can be variable in their stability and lack permeability. Hence this system is preferably operated in the absence of foam, instead opting for a bubbly zone of high bubble volume fraction through the use of a very high gas flux and/or wash water flux. Discharge of the product proceeds upwards through a central port of narrow cross-sectional area. Thirdly, the system of inclined channels increases the segregation between the bubbles and the water, ensuring the bubbly zone remains contained within the upper vertical zone, and the liquid flux reporting to the overflow is low. The expanded operating regime of the RFC was investigated by covering a very broad range of gas fluxes, up to 5.5 cm/s, and wash water fluxes, over 2 cm/s. Both laboratory and pilot plant performances were quantified by the recovery of hydrophobic particles and rejection of the hydrophilic particles, using model and industrial coal feeds. The new system hydrodynamics was found to offer significant advantages in flotation kinetics, desliming, and particle recovery across a broad particle size range. Bubble interfacial flux reached as high as 600 m2/m-2s-1. The upper system consists entirely of a high volume fraction of bubbles, which provides a "safety-net" to protect against the detachment of coarse particles, and a highly permeable zone for counter-current washing of the flotation product. Under relatively extreme conditions selective stripping of the product is observed, resulting in grade recovery values beyond those achievable using the tree flotation method."

"Release analysis is independent of collector and frother dosage and type, but it is primarily influenced by the degree of liberation or “state of release of the sample”. The shape of release curve is an indication of the degree of liberation. This paper briefs about the effect of reagent combination, particle size and surface characteristics on the release analysis of difficult-to-clean LVC coal.Release analysis of three LVC coal fines obtained from two different coalfields of India was carried out at three different size levels such as -0.5mm, (-0.5+0.1) mm, and -0.1mm. The collectors used were n-dodecane and commercial diesel oil. Incomplete liberation of coal fines even at a size of -100µm, corroborated by photomicrographs of ROM and clean coal macerals, in a great measure reduced the flotation-based cleaning potential of the fines. FESEM images of fines reveals that the adherence of ultrafine onto the surface of relatively coarser particles reduced the clean coal recovery. The results obtained also appear to be coal, reagent combination and, particle size and particle surface specific. Only one coal indicated the liberation as is usually expected for -0.1mm particles with a reasonable yield of 65% at 18% ash. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation has a long history of being used to treat coal fines. Coal flotation is considered to be difficult, if the percentage of Near Gravity Material (NGM), i.e. essentially locked particles, in flotation feed is >10% [Aplan, 1993], which is usually the case with all the coking coal fines in India. The fines are rich in vitrinite, so valuable for coking coal. Unfortunately, there appears to be no standard procedures to determine the separation efficiency of froth floatation. Release analysis proposed by C.C. Dell in 1953 [Dell, 1953], aimed to determine the ultimate floatability of coal. Several other techniques had been proposed but release analysis technique has been considered to be a vast improvement over the batch flotation process [Forrest et al. 1994]."

This investigation was carried out with low grade Murgul-Cakmakkaya copper ore once used to be dumped away as waste material. Sulphide minerals in the ore sample observed are chalcopyrite, pyrite, sphalerite and to some extent molibdenite; quartz, calcite and dolomite are the gangue minerals. The ore sample assays 0.28% Cu, 2.94% Fe and 3.36% S. Mineralogical study of the ore sample showed that adequate liberation of chalcopyrite for flota-tion was achieved below 100 µm. In flotation tests Aerophine 3418-A was the collector employed, NaOH or Ca(OH)2were the pH modifiers. Deactivators used were sodium meta bi-sulphide, starch, dextrin and lime. MIBC was the frother used throughout the tests. Test results showed that starch alone was the most suitable depressant to give the optimum metal content and recovery val-ues. Activated charcoal was used to adsorb excess collector species in the flotation pulp during cleaning stages After two stages cleaning of the rougher concentrate using starch as the depressant a copper concentrate assaying 21.2% Cu was obtained with 79.5% recovery while the tailings contained 0.01% Cu and metal losses were about 3%

The purpose of the separation processes in coal processing is obtaining products of certain ash contents. In the most of cases it is assumed that the separation process is described by one, selected parameter, which usually is grain size or material density. The separation may be described by means of statistical distributions of random variables, what allows forecasting the separation results of certain enrichment method. There are very well known the applications of approximations of Tromp separation curves or distribution functions of Erasmus, Meloy or Weibull. It is necessary to say that if the fitness of the approximation more suitable, then the characteristics of the process itself is also better. In purpose of obtaining more appropriate results, these methods were modified by application the mathematical functions, as i.e. hyperbolic tangens function. Furthermore, on the basis of empirical data, so-called interpolations may be performed in purpose of getting more appropriate results of approximation. One of the most known techniques of interpolation is Hughes method. This method for interpolating standard data involves breaking down each interval into a number of smaller sub-intervals. The results of such one-dimensional approach not always contain the full in-formation of the searched distribution. It happens because such interpretation of the problem is not completely correct. In practice, the separation process depends not only on the one parameter (i.e. grain size), but also on many other features characterizing certain material (i.e. its density). It seems then that in some cases the application of multidimensional grain characteristics distributions will be more appropriate. In this paper, the technique of joining the distributions of grain size and density by means of so-called Morgenstern distributions is shown. The general form of these distributions is as following:

"For about 20 years, the use of bacteria to control the flotation process for the production of raw material concentrates has been the subject of worldwide scientific and engineering efforts. The objective is to reduce the consumption of biologically non-degradable toxic reagents. The principle idea is to use the activity of bacteria in natural leaching processes – known since the middle of the last century – for controlling flotation processes.It was discovered that the selective activity of bacteria during the extraction of raw material concentrates by means of flotation could also be achieved with extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), excreted by bacteria. EPS, which is extracted by means of centrifuging bacterial cultures, can help to significantly reduce the use of cyanides, approximately 200,000 t/a are used for ore dressing today.The bacterium used was Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. In order to identify the bandwidth of the oxidation activity, 21 bacterial strains of the strain collection of the University of Hamburg were attracted to iron(II) sulfate and pyrite under defined conditions. All strains oxidized iron(II) sulfate ten times faster than pyrite.EPS has so far been derived from four strains. In general, EPS extracts are divided into a hydrophilic and a hydrophobic fraction. The hydrophilic fraction is composed of e.g. fucose, rhamnose and glucose; fatty acids such as dodecanoic acid, hexadecanoic acid, octadecanoic acid and nonadecanoic acid were found in the hydrophobic fraction. Pure mineral phases and mineral mixtures were used for the flotation tests. The outcome was reproducible results with technical flotation machines. The research results known so far are mainly based on investigations with micro flotation devices, which are usually used for the characterization of reagents and which do not allow a direct translation to the technical scale."

Nowadays, the more successful plants are those who have adopted effective and efficient strategies to optimise their plant operation. As the ?heart of the plant? could be viewed as the mil-ling/grinding area, one of the key steps in plant optimisation is, therefore, ensuring the mill is operating properly. In the past, when primary, secondary and tertiary crushers fed material directly to large ball mills, the energy efficiency of the concentrator was determined for the most part by the ball mill operation, whereas now the energy efficiency of a plant often rests largely on the semiau-togenous grinding (SAG) mill operation. As a result, mines have shifted their emphasis in optimization from ball mills to SAG mills. The grinding mill?s energy efficiency essentially depends on ore characteristics and the discharge rate of broken particles, which in turn depends on how efficiently the discharge pump (grate and pulp lifters) operates. The essential function of pulp lifter being to transport the broken material and slurry out of the mill, its design optimization therefore affects the discharge capacity (or mill throughput) of AG and SAG grinding mills. This paper will discuss how the optimised design of the pulp lifter/ discharger has helped to eliminate material transport issues such as flow-back and carry-over of slurry and pebbles to in-crease the energy efficiency of SAG mill using the actual operational data.

"Pressure leaching of chalcopyrite and nickeliferrous pyrrotite at temperatures between 105 and 200 ºC has been proposed as a potentially viable route for the extraction of mineral elements from sulphide concentrates. In general, these concentrates contain iron, and the economic success of the processes is partially dependent on the choice of the environmentally acceptable iron-removal technique. One of the most widely used methods for the removal of iron from sulphate liquors is precipitation as hematite, goethite, or jarosite. The nature of the iron precipitate formed dictates downstream dewatering and residue treatment and disposal options. However, a better understanding of iron precipitation under the defined process conditions would consequently be of benefit in process design and optimisation.This study investigated the precipitation of iron in the autoclave at temperatures between 105 and 200 ºC. The effects of temperature, acid concentration, iron concentration, and the presence of other metal cations on the nature and composition of the precipitates were determined."

Large variations in flotation characteristics of minerals have been observed in winter and summer in plant practices as a result of changes in pulp temperature. Variations in temperature may affect the quality for pulp and related process water through changes in dissociation of different chemical species within the pulp, as well as changing in gas and metal hydroxide solubility, reagent adsorption and its stability on mineral surfaces, water/pulp viscosity, etc. All of these affect the flotation characteristics of specific mineral to some degree or another. It has been observed in Cu-Pb-Zn and/or Pb-Zn sulfides flotation that sphalerite (ZnS) flotation is strongly affected by changes in pulp temperature. Plant practices have shown that at the both low, e.g., T <10-12°C, and high, e.g., T > 60°C, the recovery for copper activated sphalerite is dramatically dropped. Within this paper the effect of pulp temperature on flotation characteristics of sphalerite is brought into considerations and laboratory flotation tests were conducted in conjunction with surface and solution chemistry analysis to understand the effect of temperature on sphalerite recovery. The effect of temperature seems to be complex since the temperature affects both the physical (hydrodynamics) and chemical phenomena in the flotation cell. In fact all sub-processes in flotation, i.e., collision, attachment and detachment, are affected by changing in temperature. Experimental results indicating that at alkaline pH values, e.g., 8.5 to 10.5, the recovery for copper-activated sphalerite is dramatically reduced when temperature is below 10-12°C, which is in agreement with plant practice at Boliden?s Garpenberg plant in Sweden. However, results from other studies indicated that the zinc recovery is also considerably decreased at high pulp temperatures, i.e., 62°C and above.

With a growing emphasis on maximizing the value by rapidly deploying it across their assets, mining firms are eager to identify any issues that may hinder such efforts and to refine their approaches to overcome them. As such a CDE vision can be considered realized when the following components are addressed and functioning as intended - People: the right resources working together and efficiently to achieve shared goals, Process: well-defined workflows mapped out for key value processes, Technology: availability of the correct tools and applications to increase efficiency in work execution and Locations: regional locations/ sites that need to be linked for collaboration and information exchange. For the above vision, an approach that considers the degree of interaction between the roles in metallurgy operations, mineral resource planning, mine engineering, plant operations, logistics and infrastructure, and which accounts for the current technology states across these groups to determine sub-processes where the impact of a CDE will be the most is critical. In effect, CDE is more about transforming an organization?s operational philosophy than a technology driven project. This paper examines the definition and components of a CDE in a mining context. Real-time operations co-ordination, maintenance interventions, production analysis and optimization processes are examined along with current state technologies and manual processes as candidates which are likely to result in most benefits from collaborative work processes. Finally, the paper examines technologies that can be used to further enable a collaborative working environment.

The flotation circuit and the reagents of the all-sliming flotation about low grade and hard operation on zinc oxide ore are researched in the paper. The results indicated that there are many types of zinc minerals in this ore, and the composition is very complex. They include hemimorphite, smithsonite, hydrozincite and so on. The ore is seriously sliming. In light of the ore properties, three kinds of flowsheets have tested. They are gravity concentration (cleaning tables), flotation, combined process of gravity concentration and flotation. The test showed that the recovery of zinc is only 17.08% in the gravity separation. In combined process of gravity separation and flotation, the recovery of zinc concentrate is close to 70%. But the flow-sheet is complex and hard to control in the production. The floatation circuit is feasible. In the test, it pay attention to investigate the new combined reagent which is used in selective all?sliming flotation process. The effects of slime are eliminated by the multi-loop treatment of middling. In flotation, the final recovery of concentrate is 88.76%; the grade is 29.50%. The recovery of physical ore is 93%; and the recovery of -10mm fraction is more than 65%.

Jig is a kind of conventional and old gravity concentration equipment, which is mainly used in the preconcentration of medium particle fractions of low-grade nonferrous metal ore. In the past ten years, studies on jigs have made a great progress on separation of coarse and fine particle fractions. At the same time, pneumatic jigs have been widely used in processing of nonferrous metal ore. In this paper, pilot test study and commercial operation for several kinds of jigs used in Dachang con-centrator has been introduced. Dachang mining area of GuangXi province is rich in mineral resources, where many minerals exhibit various complex properties. Many elements such as Sn, Pb, Sb, Zn, S, As, Cu, In, Ag, Gd, Ag, Ga, etc, were found in the run-of-mine ore (ROM). At present, Dachang concentrator produces tin concentrate, lead-antimony concentrate and zinc concentrate. Other valuable elements get enriched and recovered in above concentrates. Dachang Mine with a mining operation history more than sixty years will end its mission on the rich ore resource exploitation. At present, low grade ores are porcessed in the concentrator, and the concentrator begins to run at a loss upon processing the low-grade and refractory ore. Heavy medium cyclones were used in the concentrator for processing 20-4mm fraction, Gongge jigs for 4-2mm fraction, and cone concentrator combined with spiral concentrator to discard the tailings of -2mm fractions. In order to minimize overgrinding, table flotation was used to recover some liberated cassiterites in a complex processing technology. Therefore, the concentrator is difficult to manage. Many years studies have shown that heavy medium cyclones and spiral concentra-tors can be replaced by sawtooth shaped wave jigs to discard 50% tailings to improve the grade of feed. And the feed was divided into rich one and poor one to minimize overgrinding of valuable cassiterites with different grinding mills. In this case, the recovery of the valuable minerals can get improved and the flowsheet was simplified. Moreover, the concentrator begins to make profit with reduction of cost. At the same time, pollution in the concentrator gets reduced and the working condition gets improved too. Sawtooth shaped wave jig was used in Changpo concentrator for replacement of cone separators and spiral concentrators to discard the tailings of -4mm fraction, and the yield of discarded tailings got improved from 30% to 50%. Grades of tin, lead and zinc in the tailings are lowered from 0.15%, 0.12%, 0.7% to 0.06%, 0.05%, 0.4% respectively, with a loss reduction of tin, lead and zinc from11%, 9%, 10% to 7.5%, 6%, 5% respectively, corresponding to the increasement of recovery of tin, lead, zinc from 52%, 50%, 55% to 56%, 56%, 62% respectively. Cost of the concentrator for processing one-ton ROM was therefore dropped from RMB155.28 to RMB119.74. Changpo concentrator lost RMB2.5 million in 2003, but it made a profit of RMB0.92 million in 2006 after the innovations. Batac jig was used in Tongkeng concentrator to discard the coarse tailings at 20-4mm, with a discarded yield of 35%, and the grades of valuable minerals got improved with a recovery above 95% for tin, lead-antimony and zinc.

Research at Cytec over the past two decades has shown that the traditional approach for ore metallurgical characterization (typically conducted via laboratory-scale batch flotation tests), which involves changing reagents and conditions one-factor-at-a-time, leads to several pitfalls. The chemical solution thus selected has a narrow un-optimized window of performance and will likely fail in the plant. A holistic approach, called the Flotation Matrix 100? process for ore metallurgical characterization, was developed at Cytec about a decade ago and has been successfully used to develop robust reagent solutions for several operations around the world. The premise for the approach is that flotation outcome from ores is variable and is determined by complex interactions between various physical, chemical and operational factors. A key component of the process is the use of efficient multivariate designs focused on the chemistry aspects (reagents and pulp chemistry), which helps identify the best processing conditions for each ore type, as well as the conditions resulting in poor performance. It also includes advanced statistical methods for dealing with the complexity and variability of experimental data. The holistic approach is illustrated in this paper with a case study on Pb/Zn ores. Using just 18 carefully designed batch tests, it is possible to partially simulate the behavior of each ore type in the plant. The best conditions for each ore type, along with the conditions to avoid, are identified. Along with this, insights are obtained into the reasons for high reagent dosages for certain ore types, and interactions between variables. The quality of iron ore fines in terms of high iron content and low levels of deleterious impurities such as Silica, Alumina, Sulphur and Phosphorous is a critical parameter, in sintering and subsequent iron and steel making processes. As the higher-grade ores become depleted, there will be a stronger focus on treating lower-grade haematite/goethite ores and developing suitable beneficiation techniques to reduce the levels of impurities. Innovative flow sheets, based on new and commercially available technologies, is required. These will be needed to include gravity concentration devices, which can handle coarse and fine feed sizes. In this paper, efforts made to reduce the silica and alumina content of a low grade iron ore fines (<1.0 mm size) sample from the Pilbara region in Western Australia are described. The feed sample, a goethite abundant lower grade iron ore fines, which was a plant reject assaying 48.66% Fe with 13.61% SiO2and 5.09% Al2O3 was investigated. To this end, an experimental campaign was undertaken, and beneficiation studies were conducted on the sample using a Floatex Density Separator (FDS), a gravity device which can be operated for size classification and/or relative density separation. The objective was to produce high-quality iron ore material suitable as sinter feed. An iron concentrate with a grade around 57.0% Fe (Calcined Fe of about 63.0%) was achieved while recovering around 67.0% of the feed weight. In addition, a rejection of substantial content of Silica (>75%) and Alumina (>66%) was achieved while securing >77% iron recovery. On the other hand, sharp classification efficiency with low values of imperfection around 0.20 was obtained. Consequently, the response of the lower grade iron ore sample to FDS application, has vast potential to reject deleterious impurities as a single stage separating beneficiation equipment. Remarkably, it was demonstrated, that a great amount of goethite, abundant in lower grade iron ore fines/plant rejects, which are currently being either stockpiled and/or dumped as waste, can be treated using FDS application and potentially can add a significant value to the iron ore mining industry by recovering additional iron ore fines. The importance of brown coal as a raw material is currently given by growing energy needs of Czech Republic. More than 70% of mined brown coal comes from North Bohemian Basin these days. Mining of brown coal is run in four mining locations. They are geologically different and the parameters of mining coal are quite different too. This requires a little bit different methodology of both extraction and reclamation. Methods of reclamation works in the region are given mainly by the characteristics of overburden rocks appearing in the upper horizon of recuperated localities. The difficulties of the North Bohemian mine dumps reclamation works are caused by extremely unfavourable properties of rocks poured down to the majority of mine dumps. These are mainly rocks of the overlaying strata and the rocks strata of brown coal bed. Main materials poured down to the mine dumps are sands, clayey sands and kaolin ? illitic clays. Admixtures in filled rocks consist of organic (coal) mass, siderite and pyrite. These rocks are mechanically instable with respect to the wind and water erosion and during weathering they are getting unfavourable, acid (phytotoxic) nature, due to the influence of SO3 and Al ions. External and internal dumps of open pit mines are significant part of the North ? Bohemian landscape sustained by excavation. Their as fast as possible preparation and gradual integration into ecosystem of the area is interest of both citizens of region and mining companies. The paper briefly summarizes the methodology of restoration of the largest dumps of the North Bohemian Brown Coal Basin and the results of analyses and evaluation of samples taken on restored localities Rado-vesice dump, Strimice dump, Ru?odol dum pand internal dump of Bilina mine. An example of modern non-tradicional restoration methods is the restoration of internal dump of Bilina mine (application of power plant stabilizer). According to observations and results of sample analyses the methods of restoration were selected to limit the erosion influence, adjust the chemical and physical composition of surface of Radovesice and Strimice dumps. The application of marlites and bentonite prevent the unfavourable weathering processes on dump surface. Compensation of Quaternary sediments was artifically formed here. The need of marlite ploughing in, application of organical substrates and vegetation preparation was proved on Radovesice dump. The conception of landscape reclamation of the largest dumps after finishing of mining, methodology of technical reclamation and well considered using of fertilizable soils are main results presented in this article.

Flotation separation of galena, sphalerite with pyrrhotite in ethanoic acid + sodium acetate sys-tem was studied in this paper. The flotation tests show that galena and sphalerite can float but pyr-rhotite can hardly float in the pH range of 3.6 to 5.6 in ethanoic acid + sodium acetate system. The flotation tests also show that galena can be separated efficiently from pyrrhotite and sphalerite can be separated on the whole from pyrrhotite, but the separation efficiency of the former is much better than the latter. The flotation results have been investigated by ultraviolet spectrum and XPS analysis, and explained by theory of hard and soft acid and base (HSAB), hydrogen bond and galvanic coupling.

Extensive exploration for uranium metal by the Department of Atomic Energy in India led to the discovery of new carbonate host rock uranium deposits Tummalapalle and Gogi, which are located in southern part of India. Alkaline leaching at elevated temperature and pressure using autoclave is the central unit process in the overall strategy for extraction of uranium from these new ore deposits. Autoclave leaching is affected largely by intrinsic nature of the ore and by the process variables and the equipment settings. In order to understand such a complex process and also to be able to predict the process performance under randomly (ore grade, uranium mineralogy, gangue mineralogy etc.) and consciously perturbed variable settings (partial pressure of oxygen, temperature, concentration of leachant, stirring speed and time), sound and robust mathematical models are needed with analytical and/or numerical solutions. Present investigation attempts to develop a variant of kinetic correlation based on shrinking core model for batch alkaline leaching process in an autoclave. The leaching model incorporates particle size distribution according to popular Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann equation, rather than assuming a single mean size for all the particles participating in the leaching reaction. Kinetic experimental data generated in autoclave leaching of Gogi uranium ore was used to evaluate various constants of the model developed. The ore sample used for experiments assayed 0.21 per cent U3O8. The partial pressure of oxygen was varied between 0.15 to 6.5 atm, temperature from 343 K to 438 K, concentration of sodium carbonate leachant in the range 0.47 g mol/L to 0.94 g mol/L, and the stirring speed from 573 rev/min to 900 rev/min in the experiments. The goodness of fit of the leaching process model is found to be >0.95. Morphological studies carried out on leached and unleached particulate matter using Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X ray analyses are included in the present study.

LKAB (Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB) is operating iron ore mines, concentration plants and pelletizing plants in Northern Sweden. The largest of the apatite magnetite deposits and the mines are Kiirunavaara with annual production rate of approximately 27 Mt crude ore underground. LKAB produces two varieties of pellets: blast furnace pellets and direct reduction pellets (LKAB DR Oxide Pellets). Meanwhile the concentration process in a sequence of the low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) and flotation at the concentration plant. In spring 2007 there were noticed great fluctuations of SiO2 grade in the crude ore. The high SiO2 grade is particularly problematic in the case of direct reduction pellets. In consequence, a project was started (called Silica in the Mine) to define exactly the problem related with silica and to find out, if possible, the reason for the great fluctuation of SiO2 grade in the crude ore going to the processing plant. A further target of this project was to develop a simplified method at the laboratory scale, to predict SiO2 grade in the magnetite concentrate in the future, but also predict the physical properties of the ore with respect to mineral processing. The essential stage of systematic characterization of the ore body for mineral processing properties is the estimation and simulation of different parameters from the laboratory scale to the large scale at the concentration plants using empirical data collected at the mineral processing by LKAB in Kiruna. Further a target was also to find useful physical parameters for mineral processing and implant those parameters into the existing geological 3D-model of the deposit. This information will be used for making prognosis of the future mining and the quality of the crude ore. It will also give better control and improve the production planning in the mine and the performance at the concentration plant in Kiruna concerning the decrease of the SiO2 grade of the magnetite concentrate.

"Since the 1970?s we have seen a marked corporate response in terms of the environment. In part this has come from regulation but it has largely come from stakeholders and the community. Rising expectations have in general been met. We now see a similar trend towards sustainability. At the same time, the importance of mining to the share market has decreased drastically and with that decrease has come the requirement for the mining sector to show returns similar in manner to other sectors. While rationalisation can achieve some progress towards these goals, the long-term requirement is for innovation, as it always has been. This paper looks to the logical goal of innovation within a sustainable mining framework and targets the removal of the desired metal values with minimal environmental footprint. It is suggested that broad ranging alliances will be necessary, particularly amongst the R&D suppliers, to achieve this goal. Industry will need to take an active role given the recent global restructuring.THE MARCH TO SUSTAINABILITYSince the 1970?s there has been an increasing corporate response on environmental matters. We have moved from matters environmental being issues relevant only to minority groups through a series of attitudinal changes by management. Whilst there have always been examples of excellent environmental performance, for many in the 70?s spending money on improving the environment beyond some minimal level was seen as a distraction from production or treated in a similar way to donations to the community. There is little of that attitude these days, as most mining companies have long since regarded the environment as a core business direction. Indeed, for some years one could note an escalation in matters of environmental reporting to the extent that the environmental performance of companies is now very public. In some cases, NGOs have even been invited to help certify and audit the reporting standards. Similarly with health & safety.There is now a rising expectation on the part of the community that social matters will also be given the same level of support as health, safety and the environment. This time around it would appear that the mining industry is at the leading edge of sustainability. The Global Mining Initiative (Global Mining, 2002) and the contributions to the Rio World Summit on Sustainable Development (Rio +10, 2002) suggest that sustainability is being taken very seriously by the mining industry. For sustainability it is convenient to use the Brundtland (1987) definition. This definition has widespread acceptance with governments, industry, environmental groups, financial institutions and individuals as a direction against which our activities and plans can be measured."
