Computer analyses of single hole signatures are often used to help blasting operators predict the type of ground vibration effects that may be produced from production blasts incorporating various delay intervals. Frequency analyses of single hole waveforms and subsequent multi-hole waveform simulations can allow an operator to determine the best type of delay intervals to use in order to minimize low frequency ground vibrations.

San Juan Mine began pre-splitting the highwall prior to cast blasting in August 1986. The first pre-split shot used six inch PVC (polyvinylcloride) pipe inside a 10 5/8 inch hole, drilled at a 74 degree angle. The powder factor was about .90 pounds per cubic yard.

This program employsexplicit time integration and uses spherical or cylindrical elements that are represented as circles in two dimensions (2-D). For over sixty years man has struggled to defeat the natural swamp lands known as the Florida Everglades as demand for land to support the burgeoning population growth in the state continued almost unchecked. Over the past ten years there has been a growing awareness that this land development could wipe out a whole ecosystem in a very short time unless steps were taken to reverse the trends. In 1991, a state law called the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Everglades Protection Act was enacted giving power to the South Florida Water Management Board to condemn certain lands for conversion to manmade swamp lands, designed to filter polluting run-off water from the agricultural lands around Lake Ockeechobee.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been conducting research on the secondary explosion hazards associated with the mining of oil shale under gassy mine conditions. Explosive incendivity tests have been conducted in a 28 m~3 (1000 ft~3) gallery to evaluate the relative incendivity of experimental emulsion-ANFO blends. The incendivity was measured by determining the minimum inert stemming requirements for preventing the ignition of a methane-air atmosphere by the discharge of hot detonation products from a 5.7 cm (2.25 in) diameter borehole.

Homestake Mining Corporations' open cut operation at Lead SD. experienced a highwall failure in October of 1993. The failure released a 75' section of rock wall at the 5280' level. It came to rest on the 5200' safety bench. Since work was in progress below the failure, this rock had to be removed for safety.

Three laboratory tests were developed for rating the wave-impact ruggedness of cap-sensitive explosives that are used for blasting in underground coal mines. Destructible pipe fixtures, called simulators, reproduce the shock wave or rift compression registered during the cross-hole wave interactions. The rift-compression fixture was modified to render quasi-static desensitization, when utilized with a remote air supply. Waves that were recorded near charge explosions show narrow pulses resembling underwater shock waves, followed by wide, weak humps, called rift compressions.

This paper discusses development, test data, field trials, performance, application and possible economics of high-energy blasting agents fueled with Nitropropane that can be bulk loaded into downholes or packed into waterproof packages at densities between 1.10 and 1.25 gm/cc and that yield calculated detonation pressures of 50 kilobars in small diameters to 100 kilobars in diameters over six inches. Using high-density nitrate, downhole densities of over 1.4 have been attained in field trials with correspondingly high calculated detonation pressures.
