This paper will discuss the recent and on-going drill and blast optimization measures at the Sparkhule Limestone Quarry, which have resulted in a 44% reduction of drill and blast unit costs per ton of broken limestone. This amounts to approximately $240,000 of drill and blast saving per year at current annual production rates of about 2.5 million tons (2.3 million tonnes) total material shot. The reduction of drill and blast costs were accomplished by a detailed and controlled in-the-mine drill/blast experimentation and cost evaluation using 8 different blast pattern designs and shots totaling approximately 267,000 tons (242,200 tonnes) of shot and mucked material. A careful review of the geology of the deposit was performed to determine the different rock classification/strengths/structural properties and to adjust blast designs to optimize fragmentation for the different rock types. Equipment loading productivity and crusher throughput performance were monitored as part of the evaluation process to assure that an optimal fragmentation of broken rock was achieved with the new blast designs. The study included the review of bulk explosive and accessory selection criteria (ammonia nitrate/fuel oil mix - ANFO, mini prills (high density ANFO), sensitized and un-sensitized emulsions at a 30% emulsion/70% ANFO blend), blast pattern design, charge diameter and the cost of drilling. Laser profiling technology was used to assure proper bench heights, stemming and sub-drill footage and front row burdens. High speed photography, video and still photos were taken of the different designed shots to assist in the evaluation of the performance of each blast. Powder density checks, size distribution, back break, detonation velocity and pressure measurements were taken. Different borehole diameters were used for the drill optimization study and drilling cost and productivities determined. A detailed cost comparison between in-house blasting and complete shot service was prepared to evaluate if shot service is a cost effective alternative to current in-house loading and blasting including a review of the new and pending United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Fire Arms (ATF) regulations and associated owner costs/risks and potential benefit of shot service.

It may be difficult to imagine but small engineering companies do exist, even in relatively large cities like San Antonio. Due to the limited capital available for the purchase or use of equipment such as computers, many times the small company must evaluate a blast damage claim by limited means. This paper will discuss how a relatively small company has managed to become the leading blast damage experts in an area without the use of computers or sophisticated equipment. It will be shown that a single individual in a company who is familiar with vibration theory, local soil conditions and who does not mind spending long hours with a calculator and reference books can satisfy both the insuranc e adjuster or attorney, and the homeowner concerning the claim. Several examples will be given which show the typical flow of work and the ultimate outcome. This paper will focus on the special problems encountered by a small firm and how these can be overcome, and the unique interaction of a small engineering firm with both the insurance adjuster/attorney and the homowner that can lead to an equitable settlement of the claim.

Many advanced military systems and civilian power generation concepts postulate the availability of compact sources of electrical power capable of delivering gigawatts over microsecond time scales. For example, such a compact power source is essential for future practical pulsed high-powered microwave sources. An explosive-driven flux-compression power generator (EDPG) could fill this requirement. A basic strength of this concept capitalizes on the inherent high energy density storage capacity of modern chemical explosives. It relies on the physics of magnetic flux compression to convert that stored chemical energy into very large amounts of electrical power over short time scales. The generator also has the additional advantage of employing the same types of explosives that are already routinely used in conventional munitions. However, the self-destructive nature of this type of power generator places serious limitations on power pulse-lengths and ranges of applications. This paper describes how a multi-disciplinary team led by researchers from the University of Missouri-Rolla (UMR), Texas Tech University (TTU), and Texas A&M University was awarded a grant by the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research to perform basic research to resolve several fundamental EDPG problem areas. Described are the utilization of UMR’s extensive explosives research expertise and facilities to investigate questions of energy conversion efficiency and the mechanics of energy production. Also, UMR explosives researchers will provide inputs to improved dynamic computer models of the complex, intertwined physics and chemistry operative in these devices. In addition to explosives expertise, UMR provides facilities for basic explosives material research, as well as the storage, machining, and formulation of explosives. UMR researchers are also using test facilities and data collection equipment at the Rock Mechanics and Explosives Research Center and at the UMR Experimental Mine to perform “proof of principle” and subscale tests of explosive-driven flux-compression power generator components. An integral part of the paper is a description of the development of an extreme intensity flash system by UMR and TTU to allow for the high-speed photography of EDPGs in operation. This multi disciplinary research program offers major advances regarding the size, weight, and electrical characteristics of compact EPDGs. Such breakthroughs could dramatically accelerate the practical realization of systems currently under study. Also, these power sources may have far reaching relevance to other Department of Defense and certain commercial compact power applications.

The missing link is a connector between the congested downtown area of Knoxville, Tennessee adjacent to the former World's Fair site, the I_40 I_75, and Western Avenue traffic arteries. This connecter was designed to accommodate the 37,470 motorists who presently travel through these highly congested narrow paths to be replaced by the 21.8 million dollar Henely Street Connecter. All construction and blasting was to take place while existing traffic was re_routed so as to allow access between the downtown area and the vital interstate corridor. To avoid major traffic problems, the project was to be accomplished in three phases: (1) the Western Avenue viaduct demolition; (2) two new viaducts to be constructed; (3) the open box cut at Henely Street next to the L & N Depot. Due to the past attempts by the Fort Sanders Community Home Owners group and the Historical Society to stop the Henely Street Connector, this project involved a very comprehensive blasting damage control program with special provisions of .5 inches per second measured at the foundation of the closest structure.

The Paseo Bridge was located at the I-29/I-35/US-71 Missouri River Highway Crossing. It was built between 1952 and 1954 by Massman Construction Company. The 1,232 foot long, self-anchored suspension bridge was the longest of its type when built. On Jan. 22, 2003, a connector pin designed to allow the bridge to expand and contract during temperature cycles seized and caused a portion of the bridge deck to raise up and block traffic. This marked the beginning of the end for the old Paseo Bridge.

The era of non-electric systems as an initiating system has revolutionised the blasting world by introducing a very safe initiating system that is reliable, with initiation sequence possibilities that are superior to those of purely pyrotechnical or electric systems. Electronic initiation has brought with it accuracy, programming and controls that were lacking in the non-electric systems. However, it has also led to a certain degree of complexity, which works against user-friendliness, sometimes introducing a few constraints that are balancing out the intrinsic performance of electronic detonators. The introduction of a hybrid initiation system, Electronic and Non Electric, offers accuracy, and flexibility that were lacking in non-electric systems, whilst removing the inherent complexity of electronic systems. This paper endeavours to summarise the advantages and disadvantages of non-electric and electronic initiation systems that have been recorded after years of experience on site. The paper will then describe how a hybrid system only keeps the advantages whilst eradicating the disadvantages, via a case study.

Alabama USA based Drummond Ltd. operates two open pit mines in the Cesar Coal Basin of Northern Colombia. The mines produce a combined total of over 25 million tons (22.7 Mt) of thermal coal per year which is transported by rail to Puerto Drummond, a direct ship loading facility, where it is exported to over 15 countries. The company has proven and probable reserves in excess of one billion tons of thermal coal.

The US Army Corps of Engineers KY Lock Project in western Kentucky presented the blasters and vibration consultants with a set of unique challenges. The blasters on this project were faced with difficult geology and joint set orientation and sequencing of blasts opposite from what the explosive engineer/blasting specialist had recommended. Combining these issues with strict vibration and air overpressure specifications, blasting as close as 7 feet (2.1 meters) from a new lock wall, site topography that influenced the air overpressure, limitations on seismograph geophone placement that led to anomalies in seismograph recordings; surprising lessons were learned by everyone involved in the project and it is the authors’ goal to share this valuable information with everyone in the blasting industry.

Despite its porous and lightweight characteristics, aluminum mesh is believed to have blast mitigation properties. The current use of the mesh includes fuel tanks for airplanes, boats, and fuel stations as well as light armored vehicles for the military. The mesh acts as an explosion suppressant by preventing fuel tanks from exploding when exposed to an ignition source. More recently, work has been performed to assess the ability of the mesh to mitigate blast pressures produced by high explosives.

The main purpose of this study was to apply the artificial neural network (ANN) models to determine optimal powder factors and predict peak particle velocities, based on a series of observations and input parameters. The used blasthole pattern was V-cut. The locations of blastholes and ignition patterns remained almost constant. The input parameters were 14 geological conditions (i.e., dip, dip direction, spacing, separation, and persistence of 2 discontinuity sets, tunnel orientation, rock strength, RQD, and RMR) and 4 blasting conditions (i.e., distance between blasting points and measuring points, charge weight per delay, drilling length, and blasting efficiency). Data for the ANN application in this study were recently collected in a highway tunnel under construction in Korea. The main rock type in the site was biotitic granite. An optimum ANN model was determined by training models with collected data. The trained model was used to evaluate the prediction capability of the optimum model. It was shown that the ANN model could predict the powder factor and the peak particle velocity depended upon the selected input parameters. Particularly, the ANN model predicted more accurate peak particle velocities than those obtained by the blasting vibration equation. Moreover, the more dominant factors among the input parameters could be determined by analysis of the relative strength effect.

Electronic delay detonators have been used in most types of blasting application with great success, with the accuracy and precision being used effectively to control negative environmental impacts like vibration. They have also provided consistent repeatable fragmentation and heave results. With the very wide choice in delay period and powerful timing design software, the choice of firing times to optimise blast results is not always clear to the designer. So the improved results achievable from the use of electronic delay detonators are often not optimally achieved.

The use of military-type energetic materials in commercial explosive products is not a new concept. In the United States, the techniques for utilizing significant quantities of surplus military explosive materials by commercial explosive manufacturers dates back to the 1950’s. At times, explosive companies have found surplus military high explosives and propellant materials to be suitable ingredients for their commercial explosive products. The availability of these military-type energetic materials has varied over the past 50 years, as a function of the military’s strategic defense needs and the advances in modern weapon technology. For the most part, the commercial explosives industry has been able to implement methods for safely incorporating military-type high explosives and propellant materials, whenever these surplus materials become available. During the past 5-6 year period, a large amount of military-type energetic materials have once again become available for recycling into commercial explosives. This situation can be attributed to a number of factors, such as the political changes in Europe, the development of more sophisticated weapons systems, and the increased EPA pressures on the U.S. Department of Defense for disposing of surplus energetic materials. As in the past, U.S. commercial explosive manufacturers have made efforts to recycle these surplus materials into their explosive products. This paper describes some of the commercial explosive products that are currently on the U.S. market, which contain rocket and gun propellants as energetic ingredients. Some U.S. explosive companies, such as DYNO NOBEL, ORICA and Slurry Explosive Corporation, have been able to recycle significant quantities of surplus smokeless powder and composite propellants as energetic ingredients into their commercial Blasting Agents. The successes enjoyed by these companies have once again shown recycling into commercial explosive products to be an economically and environmentally sound method for disposing of surplus military-type energetic materials.

An open pit quarry operation in West Central Illinois provided a challenging proposition regarding the removal of a rock wall that once separated two pits, but was now in the middle of the north wall of the combined pit. Their mining plan included the development of a new ramp into the quarry pit in order to lessen the slope and to shorten haul truck cycle time. The task would be to remove a section of rock left behind from mining operations more than 20 years ago that was at or near the bottom of the designed ramp.

New mines are frequently located at altitudes above 3,000 meters (10,000 ft.). Drill selection must take the altitude effects into account, to insure high productivity and good bit life. In particular, compressors must be sized differently than for low altitude operation. A larger compressor is required to deliver adequate air to the bottom of the blasthole. Many drills in remote locations use diesel engines as the prime mover. Altitude effects on engine performance should also be considered.

Blast vibration monitoring for buried pipelines is typically conducted at the ground surface with a shallowly buried geophone. In many jurisdictions across the U.S., blast-related vibration limits set for pipelines are dictated by surface measurements and do not consider the significant reduction of PPV amplitudes acting on the pipe at depth. Proper stemming not only affects the rock breakage process, but also controls the unwanted side effects of blasting such as airblast, ground vibration, and flyrock. Little research has been conducted on the behavior of borehole stemming material under high pressure loading conditions. The methods of selecting stemming particle size and necessary stemming length were previously determined only by trial and error in the field.

Increasing civil development and more complex extraction scenarios make the trade off between proficient vibration control and productivity difficult to ascertain. Historically, reduction of induced vibrations levels was achieved through a reduction of MIC’s leading to smaller but more frequent blasts in order to meet extraction targets.
