Operators of construction equipment perform various duties at work that expose them to a variety of risk factors that may lead to health problems. A few of the health hazards among operators of construction equipment are: (a) whole-body vibration, (b) awkward postural requirements (including static sitting), (c) dust, (d) noise, (e) temperature extremes, and (f) shift work. It has been suggested that operating engineers (OEs) are exposed to two important risk factors for the development of musculoskeletal disorders: whole-body vibration and non-neutral body postures. Method: This review evaluates selected papers that have studied exposure to whole-body vibration and awkward posture among operators of mobile equipment. There have been only few studies that have specifically examined exposure of these risk factors among operators of construction equipment. Thus other studies from related industry and equipment were reviewed as applicable. Conclusion: In order to better understand whole-body vibration and postural stress among OEs, it is recommended that future studies are needed in evaluating these risk factors among OEs.

The literature on methane-oxidizing bacteria is reviewed in regard to (1) the growth and isolation of cultures by special techniques; (2) the distribution of these organisms in nature and descriptions of individual species; (3) the physiology of methane-oxidizing bacteria as influenced by temperature, light, pH, aerobiosis versus anaerobiosis, and carbon and nitrogen sources; and (4) the biochemistry of methane oxidation revealed by studies with intact cells and subcellular systems. Present practical applications of methane-oxidizing bacteria are limited to prospecting for natural gas and petroleum deposits. Desirable areas for future research are discussed as well as some possible applications such as (1) the removal and/or early detection of methane gas in coal mines by intact cells or enzyme preparations; (2) the generation of electrical energy by microbial fuel cells using methane as fuel; (3) the growth of methane-oxidizing bacteria on methane for their food value; (4) the purification of hydrocarbon gas mixtures using methane-oxidizing or other alkane-oxidizing bacteria; and (5) the synthesis of methane from mixtures of H2 and CO or H2 and CO2 by me thane-forming bacteria.

"A study is presently underway by the authors to investigate the character of the bit-coal interaction during coal cutting and its influence on the size and shape distributions of the generated dust. An important aspect of this on-going project is the development of acoustic emission (AE) criteria which would make it possible to carry out remote monitoring of coal cutting operations. The on-going AE studies are fundamental in form and were undertaken to evaluate the general feasibility of AE monitoring techniques using simplified coal breakage and cutting procedures. The present paper will focus on the test facilities, experimental techniques, and results associated with linear, single-bit cutting. An AE-transducer, attached directly to the bit, detected AE signals during the cutting process.Experiments have been carried out on seven specimens of coal obtained from the USBM experimental mine at Bruceton, Pennsylvania. Three separate cuts were made for each of two bit angles (10 and 45 degrees) and two bit velocities (0.085 and 0.169 cm/sec), for a total of 12 separate cuts. Data associated with resulting particle size distribution and AE characteristics (major dominant frequency components) will be discussed. Data analysis has also been underway using a computer-based pattern recognition system known as ICEPAK (Intelligent Classifier Engineering Package). This program is able to evaluate over 100 features of an AE event and to make objective comparisons between AE signals associated with different loading or cutting parameters. The results to date show that AE generated during some of the test conditions can be recognized by ICEPAK with a recognition rate of 90% and higher while other conditions cannot at present be separated with a suitable recognition rate. Further analysis of the experimental data is presently underway.The reduction of the severity, and eventual elimination, of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) depends on gaining fundamental understanding in a number of major areas. These include dust generation and entrainment, transportation, suppression, medical effects of dust, and possible treatment. At present a project is underway by the authors to investigate the character of the bit-coal interaction during coal cutting and its influence on the size and shape distributions of the generated dust. An important aspect of this on-going project is the development of acoustic emission (AE) criteria which would make it possible to carry out remote monitoring of coal cutting operations. Suitable on-line analysis of monitored AE data would allow engineers to evaluate factors such as shearer bit conditions and cutting efficiency, and to quantify the particle size and shape distribution of the generateddust. The on-going AE studies are fundamental in form and were undertaken to evaluate the general feasibility of AE monitoring techniques using simplified coal cutting procedures. To date experiments have been carried out on coal under uniaxial compression, linear single-bit cutting, and cutting using a laboratory-scale, single-bit shearer. A brief outline of the overall study has been presented in an earlier paper (Hardy, Shen and Kimble, 1995). This paper will consider the linear single-bit cutting studies in more detail.It is generally accepted today that most solids emit low-level seismic signals when they are stressed or deformed. In this paper this phenomenon will be referred to as acoustic emission (Hardy 1972, 1981, 1989). In essence, the measurement of AE activity in a field or laboratory structure is relatively simple. A suitable transducer is attached to the structure, the output of the transducer is connected to an associated monitoring system, and the AE signals occurring in the structure, due to internal or external stress, deformation, and failure are suitably acquired, pre¬processed and recorded."

The Bureau of Mines, in its researches aimed to prevent wastes and to increase efficiency in oil-well practice, has investigated the matter of casing troubles and fishing methods. The results of the investigation are set forth in this paper. After expensive development work, many wells being drilled for oil have been abandoned because of casing troubles. These troubles in many instances have been thought to be insurmountable, whereas they are sometimes susceptible of solution. In fields_ where casing difficulties are of daily occurrence, methods have been evolved for combating them. Were these methods more widely known and applied wherever the same conditions exist, the oil industry at large would be greatly benefited. This report attempts to classify these troubles and suggests solutions that will save the operator discouragement and expense. It is assumed throughout this paper that the reader is so familiar with the ordinary oil-well drilling and fishing methods that detailed explanation is unnecessary. The well-drilling terms that are used herein will be readily understood by those for whom this discussion is intended. However, in order to avoid confusion as to the sense in which some of these terms are applied, definitions &re included.

This report contains a summary of the various studies made to determine the structural design of the production mine area of the Oil-Shale mine, Rifle, Colo. Prior to this investigation, it had been determined from a study of the geology, the structure of the deposit, and mining costs that the deposit should be mined by open stoping. The problem remained to determine the maximum safe roof span, the optimum extraction ratio, and the size of the pillars. These factors were determined from a study of the geologic structure of the deposit, the physical properties of the oil shale, and the magnitude and distribution of the stress around proposed underground openings. The latter was determined from both theoretical calculations and model studies. Safe roof spans, pillar sizes, pillar contours, and optimum extraction ratios were calculated from elastic theory and the physical properties of the mine rock. Safe roof spans, pillar sizes; and time effects were determined by Wright and Bucky by testing mine models in a centrifuge. The models were made from rock specimens taken from the proposed mine roof and pillars. The results from both studies agreed.

Purpose: This training material focuses on the content of emergency warning messages. Research has shown that when an emergency occurs, people often do not get the information they need for the purpose of taking appropriate action. This safety talk presents a procedure, using mental cues that can be used by senders and receivers of emergency warnings. Intended Use: This material has been developed for use in short safety-training sessions such as start-of-shift safety or Atoolbox@ talks. The information can be presented in approximately fifteen minutes and is appropriate for workers at all experience levels. While the examples and illustrations are taken from the underground coal mining industry, the training can be tailored to any work setting by substituting appropriate examples. Materials Needed: The instructor will need to prepare the figures provided in a form that can be seen by the entire class. Suggested methods include the use of: (1) overhead transparencies, (2) laminated pages that can be held up for small groups, and/or (3) handouts with copies of the figures for each trainee. As a supplement, stickers featuring the communication triangle can be placed on hard hats, telephones or other communication devices to remind workers about the key to effective emergency communication. The Talk: The accompanying script is a guide for presenting this safety talk. Training is enhanced if these materials are covered but not simply read by the trainer. Examples given in this guide are from real experiences. To make training more interesting and effective, the instructor can substitute examples from his/her workplace. The method described may be used to delineate irregularities, inclusions, porosity, or shrink holes in ingots up to 43 inches in length. Rou¬tine testing does not require technical personnel, and the equipment is easily maintained. INTRODUCTION For a number of years, the Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines, Albany, Oreg., under contract with the Atomic Energy Commission and the Naval Reactors Division of the Bureau of Ships, has studied the production of zirconium and has adopted the Kroll magnesium-reduction process3/ as the, most economical means of producing high-purity zirconium sponge in quantities commensurate with demand. Consumable-electrode arc melting4/ provides a practical means of melting the sponge without increasing the impurity content. The ultimate application for which the metal is intended requires that strict specifications be met to insure workability and maintain the nuclear properties and corrosion resistance. The control measures employed to satisfy these specifications include chemical, spectrographic, and metallographic analyses, mechanical and corrosion tests, and ultrasonic inspection of the finished ingot. The primary purpose of ultrasonic inspection is to augment the other control measures by checking the soundness of each ingot leaving the laboratory. An incidental but important function has been the revelation of information leading to better understanding of the arc-melting process. For example, information obtained through ultrasonic inspection relative to the occurrence and distribution of porosity in ingots has resulted in a. modification of melting practices that minimizes the occurrence.

This report presents the results of a cooperative study between BethEnergy Mines Inc., Ebensburg, PA, a central Pennsylvania coal mining company, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines to investigate longwall development entry roof instability. In-mine mapping of geologic and deformational features was conducted to reveal the major ground control problems encountered during gate road development. In addition, mining-induced pillar load monitoring was used to indicate development loading on variously dimensioned gate road pillars and to determine if pillar yielding occurred. Finally, visual observations of a variety of roof control methods were used to determine the most effective support elements for controlling cutter roof failure.

Withdrawing timber in coal mines is done for the purpose of inducing the roof to cave in the mined-out areas and thereby relieve stresses in the immediate roof material over the working places adjacent to the breakline of the roof, thus preventing the crushing of the ends of pillars and adding to the safety of those engaged in pillar extraction. A secondary purpose is the recovery of timber for further use either as prop-, crossbars, lagging, sprags or cap pieces. At some mines timber is withdrawn as a precaution against fire which may he of spontaneous origin, because wood always aids a fire of any origin. With some of the power-driven types of machines now in use a greater proportion of mine timber may be recovered, and in mines where pillars are left too narrow for their removal some of the timber in rooms might be salvaged for further use.

The Bureau of Mines developed a stopping design that allows the stopping to be blown down by strong blast forces without incurring any permanent damage. Trials with the new stopping, dubbed the quick-fix blowout stopping, have been conducted in the Bureau's Safety Research Coal Mine at Bruceton, Pa., and in two New Mexico uranium mines. Results have been favorable in all cases. Compared with conventional brattice stoppings or wood bulkheads, the quick-fix blowout stopping is easier and less time consuming to install, is easier to maintain, and in most cases is just as efficient an air barrier. There is same indication that the shape of the stopping makes it more resistant to blast fore s than the fabric stoppings now in use.

A study of the composition of the corresponding fractions of a primary and a high- temperature tar was undertaken to throw light on the net results of the pyrolysis of the primary products of coal decomposition in high-temperature coking practice, with reference both to total quantities of the chemically similar constituents and to their distribution throughout the boiling range. No exactly parallel investigations are on record. The distribution of substances in high-temperature tars, however, is fairly well understood. Such tars are more or less similar, for they consist of the more stable phenols, aromatic and olefinic compounds resulting from the pyrolytic decomposition of a wide variety of primary tar constituents. For example, from a typical distillation curve for high-temperature tar phenols4 it may be seen that the greatest portion of the phenols distills between 180° and 220° C., a fairly narrow range.

This paper briefly describes the principal known commercial and near commercial deposits of gold-bearing gravel end the principal placer mining operations of Idaho County, Idaho. It is one of a series of similar papers on western mining districts. The data used in writing this paper were gathered during the summer of 1937. Information concerning gold-bearing gravels was obtained from prospectors and operators, while operators supplied most of the data on mining operations. No attempt was made actually to test the gravels. The principal object of the examination was to indicate placer areas worthy of further investigation by prospective operators.

In a study of the principal factors affecting the transport of coal-water mixtures through a centrifugal pump and a pipeline, the interrelation between solids concentration, velocity, and pressure drop was established for a bituminous lump coal (minus 2 inch) in concentrations up to 48 weight-percent. An optimum concentration was found to exist for maximum capacity of a given pipe-line, and for minimum energy requirements per ton of coal. Coal size degradation by particle fracture took place in the pump; abrasion and attrition to form fines took place in both pump and line. A novel system of studying flow of solid-liquid mixtures in pipelines by the determination of relative sound intensities was developed.

"INTRODUCTION The most productive area of the eastern Virginia pyrite belt lies to the north of the village of Mineral., in Louisa County. The largest producers of pyrite ore in the area were the Armenius, Boyd Smith, and the Sulphur mines.The Boyd Smith mine started production about 1890 and operated more or less continuously until 1922, when competition from the Gulf States and Spain closed the pyrite mines in Virginia. "INTRODUCTION An exposure of large beryl crystals in pegmatite on Beryl Mountain, in Sullivan County, N. H., was the basis for investigation by the Bureau of Mines to determine the extent of the beryl mineralization and to expose other parts of the same zone that were favorable for additional beryl-rich shoots. "Preliminary examination of the Glass Buttes mercury deposits, Lake County, Oregon, was made in August 1945 at the request of W. S. Lazier, present lessee of the deposit.Most of the prospect openings in the area were inspected. The more significant workings were sampled and napped in detail. This report presents the data obtained from the investigation to date.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. noon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. P. S. Dean, assistant director.Special acknowledgment is due to S. H. The area immediately north of Middle Butte has been superficially prospected by numerous test pits, trenches, shafts, and short adits, which revealed a number of opalized zones. Many of these opalized zones contain weak to strong concentrations of cinnabar. The area has not boon explored thoroughly; no mercury has been produced from any of its deposits.A block of 48 full-size claims has been located to cover a large part of the area in sections 34 and 3, Tps. 23 and 24 S.,R. 23 E.,W.M. These claims, held by, location are owned by H. S. Miller, lumberman of Bend, Ore. W. S. Lazier, 10N. W. 20th Avenue, Portland, Ore., currently controls the property under,a nominal leasing agreement. J. W. McDaniel, 44 Lake Place, Bend, Ore., has done much of the underground and surface exploration on the property.The Glass Buttes district is an area of low relief in the Deschutes River drainage system near the northeast corner of Lake County, Ore. (See fig. 1.) The arid climate is marked by extremes of winter and summer temperature. Water for cane use is not available in the immediate area. Well water, however, can be obtained in limited supply on ranch property 5 miles to the south."

Relationships that may exist between assays and sample interval lengths when using unequal sample intervals in mine sampling have been investigated as part of the larger research problem of adapting statistical methods to the analysis of weighted average grades. The theoretical relationship between the amount of difference in the weighted and unweighted average grade of ore and the size of the correlation coefficient between assay value and sample interval length was found to be linear. Numerous examples of actual field sample and assay data, which have been obtained by using unequal sample intervals, are documented, and the differences between weighted and unweighted average grades of ore and the correlation coefficients between assays and sample interval lengths have been computed and plotted on graphs. Differences between these actual field data and the expected theoretical linear relationship are examined. It is hypothesized that the use of unequal sample intervals in mine sampling is, in fact, stratified sampling in a statistical context. The sampler establishes stratification by selecting unequal sample intervals on the basis of differences in lithology, changes in rock type, characteristics of mineralization, or differences in metal content. Statistically} methods currently used in mine sampling, involving unequal sample intervals, fail to consider differences in the inherent variances in grade of ore within the various strata established by using unequal sample intervals. Consequently the strata are sampled with different precision. This difference in precision of sampling between strata may account for much of the deviation between the plotted points representing actual field sampling data and the theoretical linear relationship between the amount of the difference between weighted and unweighted average grade of ore and the size of correlation coefficient between assays and sample interval lengths.

"Measurement of the size and elemental characteristics was performed on airborne coal mine dust samples collected by multi-stage cascade impactors as well as channel samples of the geologic materials. Size distributions were obtained using precise weighing techniques on the impactor substrates. Elemental analysis on the samples was performed by the proton-induced x-ray emission (PIXE) method, a rapid and non-destructive method of multi-element analysis.The various analyses were performed on 9 major and 21 trace elements. The results indicate the importance of intake air and shuttle car movements as sources of dust. The association of coal dust characteristics with channel samples was investigated using the coefficient of proportional similarity as a statistical measure. Results show a strong relationship between major elements and the geologic material being cut but a similar relationship between trace elements and geologic materials is not consistent.1. INTRODUCTIONThe most significant occupational disease in the coal industry is known ·as coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CW'P). While CW'P has existed for centuries, its mechanism of occurrence and association with coal dust has been well understood for only a few decades. In the 1930s, the significance of this disease led state and government officials in the USA to perform extensive epidemiological and environmental studies in the major coalfields. Study of these results plus later studies in the coal producing countries of Europe eventually led to the dust regulations that appear in the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969.The impacts of the 1969 act were a productivity decline and increased production cost. Many analysts attributed this in large part to difficulties in complying with the new dust standards (Brezovic 1981). However, compliance was met in most continuous miner sections rather quickly. The remaining problem area is that of longwall mining where the procedures and layout of the minin~ system make it difficult to meet the standards."

Consumable-electrode arc melting is now accepted throughout the industry as the best method for producing ingots of zirconium, titanium, molybdenum, and their alloys. In addition, the technique is widely used in laboratories for fusing samples of such metals as hafnium, chromium, tantalum, columbium, and thorium. The production of consumable electrodes from these metals presents some rather difficult problems, the accepted industrial solution being the use of heavy powder-metallurgy-type presses. This paper summarizes information on fabrication of consumable electrodes by this and alternative means, such as sintering, nippling, and welding lightly pressed compacts of scrap metal. A possible saving of considerable capital investment is shown in the case of sintered compacts. The electrical circuit components of a pilot sintering unit are analyzed. INTRODUCTION The consumable-electrode arc-melting process has been accepted by most of the industry as the best method at present for producing high-quality pure or alloy in-got from sponge titanium or zirconium. This technique is not particularly new, having been patented by Von Bolton (l)3/ in 1909 for melting tantalum. However, it has been applied to industrial-scale operation only in the last few years. Among the important contributions to this technique are the work of Kroll (2) and Parke and Ham (3) and the work reported by the Office of Naval Research (4). The Bureau of Mines-has added considerably to the knowledge of this process (5-9).
