In 1988, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 5,640-acre Soda Mountain Wilderness Study Area (OR-011-017), in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Jackson County, OR, about 30 miles south-east of Medford. The study area covers most of the south-facing slope of 6,071-ft Soda Mountain. Geologically, the area is underlain by Oligocene to Pliocene basaltic andesite flows and less extensive intrusive rocks of the western Cascade Mountains. In addition, there is a 3/4-mile-diameter area of kaolinized and silicified rhyolite tuff, which appears to have intruded the andesite, and is host to epithermal gold mineralization.

Purpose The NIOSH Hearing Loss Simulator is a software training and communication tool for promoting hearing loss prevention. It allows a user or trainer to demonstrate the effects of noise exposure on hearing without experiencing an actual noise-induced hearing loss. Estimates of the effects of different levels of noise exposure are based on the American National Standard Determination of Occupational Noise Exposure and Estimation of Noise-Induced Hearing Impairment, otherwise known as ANSI S3.44. This standard specifies the predicted hearing loss for noise-exposed populations of individuals based on risk factors that include gender, age, sound levels (in A-weighted decibels or dBA), and years of exposure. Algorithms specified in the standard were derived from empirical studies of populations that had no exposure to loud noise and other populations that had experienced various levels and durations of noise exposure. This manual explains the major objectives that can be addressed with the simulator and training scenarios that can be applied to real-life, real-worker scenarios. The majority of this guide explains the simulator's functions in detail. Simulator users are encouraged to read this manual while learning how to run the software. [ ] Training Objectives The main objective of the Hearing Loss Simulator is to increase motivation for taking effective hearing prevention action by demonstrating simulated noise-induced hearing losses. [The Simulator can also help teach the following facts about hearing loss. Hearing loss is affected by noise levels. Hearing loss worsens as the noise exposure duration increases. Hearing loss can become permanent. Hearing loss makes it harder to hear what others say. Most hearing loss is not caused by age. Speech is made up of both low and high pitch sounds. Hearing loss due to noise makes it harder to hear high pitch sounds. Hearing loss due to noise has less of an effect on hearing low pitch sounds.]

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYDuring the latter part of 1943 a magnetometric survey was conducted by the Geophysical Division of the Bureau of Mines at the mine, Putnam County, N. Y., in an endeavor to locate a segment of the body that reports state was cut off by a fault. The Mahepac mine was abandoned about 1895 after producing nearly 1,000,000 tons of high-grade magetite iron ore. The results of the investigation indicate the termination of the ore body by ""pinching"" or a displacement of such magnitude as to place any extension at a considerable distance the original ore body. This report describes the work done on the project and presents the data obtained. ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States and Alaska since 1939. The Mahopac mine was visited by W.T. Millar, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, on June 5, 1943, accompanied by Dr. William Agar of the Federal Survey, and again on July 29, 1943, accompanied by Dr. A. F. Buddington and H.F. Hawkes, both of the Geological Survey.The mineral investigation was under the general supervision of Paul M. Tyler, formerly regional engineer, Eastern Region; J. D. The uses of talc are many but are not, in general well known or fully developed within the last decade several companies have realized the possibilities of greatly increased use and have intelligently proceeded to develop some of the fields which seemed most promising. This has had a tendency to lift talc from the obscurity in which it had existed for years, but the work is only started and much remains to be done. Considerably more attention has been paid to the technology and utilization of talc in Germany and Austria than in this country, despite the fact that the United States produces 65 of the world's talc and Germany and Austria combined but 5.4%. In the "Bericht,uber die tatigkeit des verbends der talcum-interessenten in Oesterreich-Ungarn" (Proceedings of the Austro-Hungarian Talc Association), for the years 1912 and 1913, many notes upon new uses appeared, together with suggestions as to further development of old uses. Aside from a few notes on the use of tar in paper, little has been published in the English language upon this subject. By recent action of the Talc and Soapstone Producers Association (U.S.A.) funds for research into the properties and uses of talc have been made Available and it is hoped that markets will be materially broadened a a result of this work.

"There was a time when any suggestion that the Davy flame (safety) lamp be discarded, would have evoked unlimited, criticism. However, that time is past.Investigations both here and abroad have shown conclusively that the Davy lamp does not have the necessary factor of safety against ignitions of mine gas, and England, the lost stronghold of the Davy lamp in Europe, has eliminated this lamp and substituted safer types.In the United States there are companies who still use the Davy lamp in spite of all that has been said and published as to the dangers connected with its use.Recently the purchasing agent of an anthracite coal company requested the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, to pass upon the safety of some braise gauzes for use in a shielded Davy lamp. A shielded Davy lamp is an ordinary Davy safety lamp equipped with a circular brass shield that is attached to the lamp posts. This shield extends about one-half way around the gauze and one-half of the gauze height. The main purpose of the shield is to prevent the lamps being extinguished by a sudden increase in the velocity of the air current past the lamp.The brass gauzes submitted for this test represented two grades of brass - a yellow brass and a red brass. The analysis of these brasses was not determined. Two shielded Davy lamps that were submitted for the tests each had a steel gauze. These steel gauzes were also tested. Tests were made in horizontally moving mixtures of Pittsburgh natural gas and air at velocities of 400 to 1,000 feet per minute. The gas percentages used were 7%, 8.6%, and 11%. Tests were made with the lamp shield in two positions relative to the lamp and direction of flow of the gas-and-air mixture. In one position the shield was between the gauze and flow, as normally used. In the other position the shield was on the downstream side of the lamp. The tests were continued until one or more failures or gas explosions been obtained with each of the six gauzes. The results of these tests summarized as follows:"

 An analytical method for the determination of the gum-forming material in gasoline has been developed by the Bureau of Mines, during a study now in progress to determine the best rays for elimination of such constituents from gasoline. This method is similar in principle to that previously described by Smith and Cooke, which involved evaporation of e semple of gasoline in a small glass dish. The evaporation was started on an actively boiling steam bath and completed in an air oven at 105°C. In the improved method described below, the steam bath has been replaced by a steam heated oven in which an inert atmosphere is maintained. Air is ex- cluded from the oven, consequently the precision of the determination is increased. Furthermore, evaporating dishes different from those previously described may be used.

THIS CHAPTER of the Minerals Yearbook contains injury experience and related employment information for the coal-mining, coking, oil and gas, peat, and native asphalt industries in the United States for 1962. Injury experience is measured by the number of injuries sustained per million man-hours of exposure in each industry. No attempt has been made to combine these data and present rates reflecting the mineral-fuel industries because the hazards of the separate industries are not comparable. Tabulations showing the trend of injuries and employment for all mineral industries are presented in volume III of the Minerals Yearbook. COAL The injury-frequency rate for the coal-mining industry of the United States increased less than 2 percent, according to reports received by the Bureau of Mines. The number of fatal and nonfatal injuries per million man-hours in 1962 was 45.86, based on final data for anthracite mines and preliminary data for bituminous coal and lignite mines.

A method of error analysis has been applied to the location technique of non-linear least squares iterative inversion in order to evaluate the resolving power of several seismic array configurations with various assumed earth models and errors and inaccuracies in arrival times. The results obtained demonstrate that lateral accuracies of location are improved significantly when the depth of the miner is known. Lateral location to within 100 feet appears achievable in many instances. If it is possible to refine earth models significantly beyond what has normally been assumed in this work by the use of on-site data, or if the mine is shallow (300 feet or less), accuracies of-about 30 feet or so may be attainable. Inaccuracies in earth models of about 5% are found to contribute much more heavily to these location inaccuracies than errors of a few milliseconds in picking arrival times; however, arrival time errors of 15-20 ms or above will dominate these model inaccuracies. The expected accuracy of location is found to fall off very rapidly as the miner moves outside the array. The strength of this effect depends markedly upon the geometry of the array configuration and can be reduced by careful design. Also, as the size of the array is increased, expected location errors within the array are not altered much, but continue to match the error associated with the smaller array over a larger area (assuming that all stations can still pick up the miner's signals). Better location accuracy, especially with respect to depth control is achievable in an earth where the velocity is depth-dependent (increasing with depth) than in one which is homogeneous. During the summer of 1973 we were asked to perform a theoretical investigation of the propagation of low frequency (LF) radio waves down deep (10,000 feet) hoistshafts* for the case where the hoist cable ("rope") is the only metal conductor present. Propagation is by means of the TEM coaxial mode of transmission in which the hoist cable serves as the inner conductor and the surrounding rock acts as the outer conductor. Since the rock is a relatively poor electrical conductor the current in the outer conductor of the coaxial line is not confined to a very thin surface layer as in a metal coaxial cable, but spreads radially to a distance that is generally many times the shaft diameter. This feature of the wave propagation requires a more sophisticated theoretical treatment than the approximate skin-depth theory that is adequate for metal coaxial lines. In this Part we treat the hoist shaft wave propagation loss, characteristic impedance, and the field current distributions in the surrounding rock medium. We also show that the large penetration of the wave into the rock outer conductor does not present a difficult problem with regard to coupling the transmitter or receiver to the transmission line with a minimum of insertion loss, but that the large impedance mismatch caused by the capacitance termination between the cage and shaft wall may well be the most significant contribution to overall system loss. Inductive coupling and impedance matching to the hoist rope/shaft transmission line are also treated briefly. Preliminary results indicate that a broad minimum in overall system loss should occur between 100 kHz and 1 MHz, possibly centered around 300 kHz. Further work is needed to better quantify this signal loss behavior, compare it with hoist shaft electromagnetic noise spectral data recently acquired by NBS, and identify the most favorable operating frequencies.

[The principle of the application of electrolytes for deflocculation of fine materials in order that impurities may settle out, and the subsequent flocculation of the suspended particles by a different reagent, is well known and has been applied successfully to clays. Flocculation is also applied with success to ore slimes. Thus certain electrolytes, particularly alkalies added to a suspension of colloidal particles cause deflocculation so that, suspension may be-maintained indefinitely. The addition of bother electrolytes particularly acids, on the contrary produce's flocculation and the articles produce's are rapidly precipitated from suspension leaving a clear liquid above: the precipitated mass. Salts of trivalent elements such as aluminum act similarly. Due to its cheapness the double sulphate of aluminum and potassium, ordinary alum, has been used extensively for treating clays. These properties of electrolytes. and. their utilization in the commercial: preparation of clays have been described in publications of the Bureau of Mines.2]

The industrial hygiene and safety aspects with internal combustion engine in mining systems is truly interdisciplinary and encompasses many fields such as mine ventilation, exhaust gas and particulate analyses, mine atmospheric environment monitoring, mathematical modeling of generation, dilution and dispersion of pollutants in ventilation systems, and engine testing and approval. Mathematical models of the dilution and dispersion of diesel exhaust contaminants can be useful only if these models can be validated. In this research report, experiments that were specially designed for the above purpose are described. These experiments were conducted in the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Safety Research Coal Mine, in Bruceton, Pa. On the basis of this study, the data collected, and further review of available literature, it is concluded that mathematical models of dilution and dispersion are useful tools for mine ventilation planning. Additional objectives of this study about which conclusions and recommendations are reported here include: (a) evaluation of mine atmosphere contaminant monitoring systems; (b) optimum sampling site locations; (c) model sensitivity and error analyses; (d) computer coding of mathematical models; and (e) development of a diesel bibliography. While an extensive bibliography on diesels is provided in this report, Volume II of this final report has 511 references.

"It has long been recognized that coke is a more desirable fuel than bituminous coal in water-gas apparatus of present design, but still considerable headway has been made in the use of the latter fuel as a substiaute for coke. This is particularly true in the Central States where the supply of high-grade coke has been very limited and uncertain during the past few years, and where coking coals of low sulphur content were available in quan¬tities. In fact, with, the present difference in price of coal and coke, it is possible to realize a marked saving when using a coking bituminous coal as generator fuel.Difficulties have been encountered in the use of such fuel, but they have, to a large extent, been overcome. One of the chief obstacles in the use of the more general utilization of bituminous coal for water-gas manufacture, is the fact that, with normal operation, the capacity per unit of time is reduced. This of course is a serious problem for plants operat¬ing at capacity with coke fuel. However, this difficulty can, to a large extent, be remedied by a changed method of operating, and can be entirely remedied by a combination of the latter with a change in the design (or proportions) of a water-gas set. The preceding statement, the reader will understand, refers more particularly to a carburetted water-gas set.In the manufacture of water gas from coke, present practice requires that for continuous 24-hour service the heat of combustion of all the carbon monoxide (CO) generated during the air blow be utilized in addition to the sensible heat of the gas coming from the generator. This is doubly true when making carburetted water gas from bituminous coking coal. The reasons why this is so are apparent when the following factors are considered."

An ion-exchange-instrumental analysis technique is described for analyzing impurities at 1 to 1,000 parts per million level in rare-earth metals. A cation-exchange flame photometric method is used for the alkali and alkaline earth groups of metals, and an anion-exchange procedure is used in conjunction with polarographic and X-ray fluorescence techniques for selected transition elements. The standard deviation is about 6 percent, and the average error, about 5 percent.

This report describes an investigation by the Bureau of Mines designed to provide background data for extending and improving the applications of chlorine metallurgy in extracting metals from ores. Optimum conditions are given tor chloridizing galena, sphalerite, and chalcocite by contact with chlorine gas. Petrographic and chemical analyses of the sulfides used in the experiments are listed. Graphs are furnished showing the extent of chloridization of each metal sulfide over the temperature range of the observations. In each case, the first tests were made with the reaction chamber at room temperature. This temperature was increased by regular increments in succeeding tests until the temperature was reached at which quantitative conversion of the sulfide to chloride was observed. The data are also plotted for screen-size fractions of the sulfide minerals investigated. Data show that the extent of metal chloride formation was affected by chloridization time, particle size of the sample, and usually, the temperature of the reaction chamber. At 300° to 400° C. an anomaly was noted for both galena and sphalerite. The temperature at which this anomaly was observed varied according to the particle size of the mineral. Comparisons are made between the chloridizing characteristics of the mineral sulfides and their chemically prepared counterparts.

This Part describes a mine pager phone to public telephone interconnect sys tem that permits mine paging telephones to be selectively interconnected with the public telephone system, as illustrated by Figure 1. This interconnect concept was first conceived and demonstrated in breadboard form by H. E. Parkinson of Industrial Hazards and Communications, PMSRC, as one means for providing improved emergency and off-hours communications. The third-generation prototype unit described in this Part was designed and fabricated by Arthur D. Little, Inc. This unit is a small desk-top or wall-mounted unit that connects directly to both the public telephone line and the mine pager phone line, and requires no modifications to either the public dial telephone or mine pager phones. As part of this task, ADL also built, under a very compressed time schedule, a second-generation prototype unit suitable for reliable demonstration of the interconnect concept during the Bureau's technology transfer seminar on mine communications in March 1973. * A major objective of the design of the third-generation unit described in this Part was that it be compatible with present mine pager phone systems utilizing DC voltage on the mine phone line to activate the phone loudspeakers. Therefore, this unit was designed to operate in a push- to-talk, push-to-listen mode that accommodates the inherent design differences and operation modes of the mine phones of different manufacturers. Though this push- to- talk, push- to-listen mode of operation may seem slightly unusual at first sight, we have found it is easily learned by new users. However, mine phone manufacturers wishing to expand their product lines with such an interconnect system will probably find it to their advantage to customize the design of this system to their particular mine phones, thereby utilizing the unique attributes offered by their individual product lines. This customization should not be difficult, and Section III below suggests some of the features that can be easily added to future designs. Detailed parts lists and circuit schematics for the present third-generation proto- type system can be obtained from the system manual submitted to PMSRC and placed on public file.

Develop quieted, hand-held pneumatic percussion drills that can replace standard hand-held drills in many underground mining applications. The Problem Percussion drills are the noisiest machines used in underground mines; noise levels of 115 to 120 dBA are common, requiring the use of hearing protectors and limiting the time a miner is permit-ted to operate the drill during an 8-hour shift. Hand-held pneumatic percussion drills pose a particularly difficult problem because the operator cannot be isolated from the noise source (e.g., an acoustical cab), and alternative technologies for drilling roof bolt holes and blastholes in tight quarters are not readily available.

Gypsum plaster is calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CaS04-1/2H2O). There are two varieties, commonly designated as a and ß. The hydration setting) of this plaster involves the chemical reaction: CaS04?1/2H20(c) + 3/2H20(l) = CaSO4?2H20(c); that is, the hemihydrate combines with water to form the dihydrate. Many substances, when present as impurities, either in the hemihydrate or the water have influenced the rate of the hydration reaction. The objective of the Bureau of Mines work described in this report was to investigate the accelerating or retarding effects of small amounts of dissolved substances and to attempt to classify these effects upon a chemical basis. To eliminate competing effects, the work was conducted separately on the two varieties of hemihydrate; both were in highly pure form. (Commercial plasters usually are a mixture of the hemihydrates, with other substances present as impurities.) As the hydration reaction of each variety of hemihydrate evolves heat in amounts known from previous work, 5,6/ the authors decided to use calorimetric methods to follow the extent of the hydration reaction as a function of time. Two calorimetric methods were employed. One was designed to study the hydration reaction with a large water to plaster ratio and the other with a small water to plaster ratio (to simulate commercial practice in utilizing plaster).

Mathematical expressions are derived for the histories of the pressure, flame radius, mass fraction burned, and burned and unburned gas temperatures associated with a spherical flame propagating concentrically in a spherical vessel. The equations are solved numerically for a 9.5 pct CH4/air mixture using the best available information for the burning velocity, expansion ratio, and specific heat ratio. Calculated histories are in complete accord with experimental measurements. The accuracy of calculated histories is determined relative to errors in the system parameters, and it is found that 10 pct errors in either the burning velocity or the expansion ratio results in a 40-pct error in the pressure history. A 10-pct error in either burned or unburned specific heat ratio results in a 22-pct error &apos;in the pressure history. It was further established that the usual assumption of constant specific heat ratio is unacceptable, but equating the burned and unburned specific heat ratios result in no apparent error in the histories. The cubic law (P = Kt3 + Po) is derived and discussed, and it is found that the law is valid only during the early period (P<2 atm) of flame growth.
