This paper is a preliminary report of the results of the Bureau of Mines' twenty-second semiannual survey of motor gasoline marketed in the United States. A more detailed discussion of the whole survey is in preparation and will be published as a companion, report. The second paper, in addition to giving a more complete summary of the data included in this report, will present results of the determination of copper-strip core lion (method 530.22), color (method 10.11), sulphur content (method 520.11) evaporation residue (method 530.1), and gum content as given by the Bureau of Mines steam oven method.9 The retail price at the time the sample was taken and tax will also be stated for each sample. The present paper deals specifically with data relating to gravity, vapor pressure, and distillation. It has been the feeling of some investigators that the practice, followed in previous semiannual surveys, of grouping all types of motor fuel together without discriminating between "competitive price gasoline," benzol blends, Ethyl gasoline, "high-test" fuels, etc., has detracted from their usefulness because the data did not permit drawing conclusions in regard to any one type of fuel, and tended to obscure differences between fuels of the various types. Therefore, in order to remedy this condition, the samples of the present survey have been divided into two groups; one called "competitive-price gasoline" and a second group called "premium-price motor fuels."

A joint investigation by the Bureau of Mines and the Christopher Coal Co. at the Humphrey No. 7 mine, operating in the Pittsburgh coalbed in northern West Virginia, was undertaken to gain more insight concerning the hazardous emission of methane gas in mining. This report describes the equipment, procedure, and results. Horizontal bleeder holes drilled in the faces drained large quantities of methane, eliminating downtime of mining equipment. Also, larger quantities of methane were removed by forcing 14 to 25 g,.p.m. water at 25 to 200 p.s.i. 5 pressure into the bleeder holes. In one infusion test a fluorescein dye was added to the infusion water; in later mining operations, the infusion water was traced for a distance of 1,500 feet. With vacuum pump applied to the horizontal hole the gas-flow rate increased, and the methane content decreased. Tests indicated that methane and water infused in bleeder holes traveled along the bedding planes of the Pittsburgh coalbed at a faster rate than across the planes. Methane associated with coalbeds is produced by the slow decomposition of carbonaceous material in the absence of air and the presence of water. It is lighter than air and, depending on its concentration, forms an inflammable or explosive mixture with air. It is believed that methane is entrapped in and around the pores of the coal and adjacent strata--often under great pressure. Jetstream pressure distributions and coal cutting rates were determined for a number of nozzles and under different operating conditions. The jetstrearn pressure distribution data were fitted to an assumed curvilinear equation by the utilization of a numerical least-squares technique with the aid of a digital computer. Subsequent manipulation of the approximation equation showed that the total force of the jetstream, rather than its maximum pressure or total kinetic energy per unit Lime, was the most significant quantity affecting the coal cutting rate. A shorter method for assessing the ability of a nozzle to cut coal was found.

Coal mining is more widely distributed throughout the United States than is generally known, as 30 States are credited with having coal mines. In 1919 twenty-three of these States each produced at least a million tons of bituminous coal, and all the States produced about 560,000,000 tons. In addition, Pennsylvania produced about 85,000,000 tons of anthracite. Twenty-eight States have regulations prepared by commissions or have enacted laws governing the operation of coal mines. Pennsyl¬vania has separate codes for the anthracite and bituminous fields. The codes may be classified as follows: Twelve distinctly coal¬mining codes; eight codes that are essentially coal mining, but also apply to other mines; five codes that are subdivided, referring partly to coal mines and partly to other mines; and four codes that are essentially metal mining, but apply in part or in whole to coal mining. The first State to have a coal-mining law was Pennsylvania, which enacted a law, for Schuylkill County only, in 1869. The first State to enact a coal-mining law governing all the coal mines in the State was Illinois in 1872, followed by Ohio in 1873. Pennsylvania in 1879 enacted a law for anthracite mines only, but did not enact similar laws for bituminous mines until 1577. At least 10 other States enacted coal-mining laws between the years 1870 and 1890. Before 1890 electricity was little used in coal-ruining operations and therefore practically no provisions governing the installation, inspection, or maintenance of electrical equipment were made in any of the laws enacted up to 1890. In the law of Colorado, approved April 8, 1885, there is a reference to the use of telephones, probably the first reference to electrical equipment of any kind in a State-mining code. Most of the mining codes have been changed from their original form by amendment or by complete revision. Factual geometries are considered for X- ray scattering studies of weakly absorbing materials by both reflection and transmission methods . These studies are usually made on slab specimens to obtain adequate scattered intensities ; however , the intensities are appreciably influenced by absorption of the X-rays in passing through the specimens . Conventional equations derived to account for this absorption are based on idealized geometries , but for polycrystalline carbons the use of idealized geometries leads to several percent error in the corrections to be made . Use of factual geometries substantially reduces this error .

As part of the Bureau of Mines methane control program, the Upper Free-port coalbed was studied in Fayette County, Pa., where this coalbed lies about 650 feet below the Pittsburgh coalbed and contains the largest remaining reserves of any coalbed in the county. Its estimated recoverable reserves in Fayette County are between 670 and 800 million tons. Coal and overburden isopachs, structure and joint pattern maps, and a fence diagram were prepared using data from gas and oil exploration logs and coal outcrops. These maps will aid in determining the need and/or feasibility of degasifying the Upper Freeport coalbed in the study area. Much of the coalbed in this area is under 600 to 1,400 feet of overburden. By correlation with data from the Pittsburgh coalbed, the gas content at depths of this order is estimated to be between 140 to 300 cf/ton of coal.

"INTRODUCTION In carbothermic processes for the production of magnesium, magnesium oxide is reduced by carbon according to the following equation:(1) MgO + C = Mg(g) + CO.The reaction is virtually complete at temperatures above 2,000° C. but reverses rapidly at somewhat lower temperatures. To produce magnesium by this reaction, therefore, it is necessary to cool the gas very rapidly to a temperature at which the rate of the reverse reaction becomes negligible. Several media for quenching the gas have been proposed, among which are hydrogen, natural gas, liquid hydrocarbons, and molten metals of low melting point.The results of a preliminary investigation on the use of molten lead as the quenching medium are summarized in this report. The work was done in 1941, when the threat of war made it imperative to investigate every process that offered possibilities for rapid expansion of domestic production of magnesium. Although the results were encouraging, other processes appeared to offer better prospects for immediate wartime development, so the work was not continued. Shortly before the investigation was completed, several patents on the use of low-melting metals for absorption of magnesium vapors appeared, 4/"

Electric - smelting studies were made on titaniferous materials obtained from the Klukwan and Snettisham , Alaska ; Choteau , Mont .; and Iron Mountain , Wyo . , deposits with the objective of determining the feasibility of producing pig iron and an enriched titania slag in one test series and pig iron alone in another test series . In addition , related studies were conducted to determine the amenability of Choteau crude ore to wet -magnetic separation and to determine the quality of steel that could be produced from the titaniferous pig iron . The continuous smelting tests were made in a three - phase , submerged - arc , electric furnace , and the laboratory steelmaking tests were made in a singlephase electric - arc furnace . A continuous , belt - type , wet - magnetic separator was used in conjunction with a ball mill and a spiral classifier in recovering titaniferous magnetite from the crude Choteau ore . Pig irons containing less than 0.05 percent phosphorus or sulfur were readily produced from the titaniferous materials ; iron recoveries ranged from 92 to 98 percent . The Choteau ore was ground to minus 65 - mesh to produce a concentrate containing 60 percent or more iron . The steel produced from the titaniferous pig iron was a high - quality product .

As part of a continuing effort to reduce the weight and bulk of equipment that mining personnel must carry underground, the Bureau of Mines and the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) investigated accurate and convenient gas samplers for use by mine inspectors in sampling mine atmospheres. The samplers are septum-stoppered glass vials commonly used for routine blood sampling. These lightweight, compact samplers yield results comparable with those obtained with conventional bottle samplers of 250-ml nominal capacity.

In the summer of 1985, at the request of the U.S. Forest Service, the U.5. Bureau of Mines examined the 109,000-acre West Big Hole study area to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is in Beaverhead County, about 50 mi west of Dillon, MT. Four lode properties within or adjacent to the study area contain an estimated 452,000 tons of identified subeconomic gold-silver resources. Resources ranged from 900 to 302,000 tons, with estimated grades between 0.02 and 0.23 oz/ton gold and as much as 4.8 oz/ton silver. Gold, silver, and base-metal content in samples of poorly exposed mineralized structures indicate that exploration may identify resources on 18 additional lode properties within the study area and 5 properties adjacent to it.

This report describes the results of a Bureau of Mines investigation in which an elastic inclusion, orebody, or mining system is replaced for purposes of analysis with an imaginary effective inclusion of rectangular shape that encloses the region. This effective inclusion has averaged physical properties that are directly related to the average inclusion stresses. The results were in excellent agreement with those predicted by Donnell's theory (2)2 for an isotropic elliptical inclusion in a state of plane strain for all height-to-width ratios and for all degrees of inclusion hardness from very soft to very hard. The results are exact for an isotropic circular inclusion and provide an easy method of evaluating the stresses obtained by cylindrical inclusions in boreholes when the Poisson's ratio for both host and inclusion equals 0.25 for plane strain or 0.333 for plane stress. The theory was also used to predict the average stresses in 48 finite-element models of single transversely isotropic inclusions of ovaloid and rectangular shape. An interesting and useful observation from this work was that the forces on elliptical inclusions in the x and y directions, produced by applied uniaxial stresses in the y and x directions, respectively, were equal in magnitude but opposite in sign when the applied stresses were equal. This occurred when the plane strain condition was used with a Poisson's ratio of 0.25. The practical usefulness of the method is given by treating a variety of mining problems: (1) The average stresses in an orebody of irregular shape; (2) the average stresses in single-level room-and-pillar mining systems; (3) the average stresses in multiple-level room-and-pillar mining systems; (4) the effect of mining sequence on the average stresses produced during mining; (5) the stresses in cylindrical borehole plug related to host rock stresses as a function of plug hardness; and (6) methods for simplifying finite-element analysis of complex structures.

The investigation to evaluate the reserves of coking coal in the United States suitable for the manufacture of metallurgical coke is being made by the Bureau of Mines in three parts: (1) To estimate known (measured plus indicated) recoverable reserves of all coking coal; (2) to study the carbonizing properties of coals and coal blends not now widely used for metallurgical coke making; and (3) to upgrade marginal coals through effective preparation. This is the second7j of a series of reports giving the results of studies by counties under part (1) of the investigation. This report covers Indiana County, Pa., which comprises parts of the Smicksburg, Punxsutawney, Elders Ridge, Indiana, Barnesboro, Latrobe, New Florence, and Johnstown Quadrangles. (See fig. 1.) A base map for each bed in each Quadrangle was made to the scale 1 inch equals 1,200 feet. Maps of mines, locations of drill holes, bed and total coal thicknesses, and the outcrop of the bed were plotted on the maps. With all available data plotted, isopach lines were drawn to limit areas of known unmined reserves in beds 0 to 14 inches thick, 14 to 28 inches thick, 28 to 42 inches thick, and over 42 inches thick. These areas of coal reserves also were divided into "measured" and "indicated" categories. All areas in each thickness range and in each category, mined-out areas, areas excluded from the estimate, and areas outside of the outcrop were measured by planimeter on the base maps. Estimates of total reserves 14 inches and more thick and maps for individual beds were prepared from these data.

Pillar recovery has been associated with nearly one third of roof fall fatalities in underground coal mines during the past decade. Safe pillar recovery requires global stability and local stability. Global stability is addressed primarily through pillar design. The local stability risk factors include cut sequence, the final pillar stump, supplemental supports (timbers vs. Mobile Roof Supports (MRS)), roof bolting, and many others. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has evaluated each of these factors through field research and analysis of accident statistics. The paper discusses design methods and technologies that have been transferred to the mining community and implemented.

An equilibrium study of the system potassium carbonate, potassium bicarbonate, carbon dioxide, and water has been conducted with solutions of 20-, 30-, and 40-percent equivalent potassium carboaate concentrations. These equilibrium data cover the operating range of the hot carbonate scrubbing system for removing carbon dioxide from gas mixtures. Such data are necessary to establish the limits of purification and are used to design absorption and regeneration towers. Values of K in the relationship K = (KHCO3)2/(K2CO3)PCO2 were determined for higher temperatures of 70" to 140° C. and greater concentrations, I 20 to 40 percent, than employed by previous investigators. For the 20- and 30-percent concentrations, K is constant at a given temperature; thus, once K has been determined the equilibrium pressure of carbon dioxide can be calculated for any conversion. Variation of & values with changing conversion was observed with the 40-percent solutions, so that equilibrium calculated pressures are less reliable from average K values.

This Bureau of Mines publication presents guidelines for mining near surface and underground bodies of water. The guidelines were based on information developed under contract in three phases of study, as follows: (1) Collection and documentation of data from worldwide sources; (2) application of existing guidelines, foreign, Federal, and State, to case histories of previous inundations; and (3) development of recommended guidelines for underground coal mining near bodies of water aimed at maximum efficient utilization of underground coal resources consistent with minimizing inundation hazards. While the contract guidelines were for the mining of coal seams, they may also be used for mining any tabular sedimentary mineral deposit. Tables are given for the determination of the size of coal pillars needed; for other bedded deposits, similar tables could be determined based on their strength properties.

Examination of seismic records during the time interval of the Sago Mine disaster in 2006 revealed a small amplitude signal possibly associated with an event in the mine. More needs to be understood about the seismicity from mine explosions in order to properly interpret critical seismic information. A seismic monitoring system located at NIOSH’s Lake Lynn Experimental Mine has monitored experimental gas and dust based explosions and impact tests. The seismic signatures from these different events were analyzed using standard waveform analysis procedures. The magnitude of seismic energy during a gas and dust explosion was found to be more dependent on mine entry geometry and seal behavior rather than on the amount of explosive fuel present. The results suggest a large explosion that’s not restricted can generate potentially the same magnitude as a small explosion that is restricted.

The increasing concern for dust control in metal and nonmetal mining prompted the Bureau of Mines to investigate the dust suppression technique of applying foam to face drilling and crushing operations in a gypsum mine. Previous attempts to achieve effective dust control on face drills using other techniques, such as dry collection and boom-mounted external water sprays, have not been successful. The largest problem encountered when using these techniques has been the lack of sustained effective dust capture at the face. Results for two faces studied show that injection of the foam through the drill steel provided an average dust reduction of 95 pct. However, the use of foam on the crusher provided no dust reduction at the operator's position (because of good local ventilation) and a 27-pct average dust reduction for two feeders at a location midway between the operator's position and the crusher. The conclusions obtained from this study are that (1) foam can be an extremely effective dust control technique when used on localized dust sources such as dust generated within a blasthole during drilling, and (2) foam is only marginally effective as a dust control technique when used on nonlocalized dust sources such as dust generated during the feeder-and-crusher operation.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the effectiveness of long holes drilled in solid virgin coal in degasifying an area of the Pitts- burgh coalbed showing that horizontal holes drilled into a virgin coalbed from the bottom of any shaft will effectively remove methane gas in commercial quantities from the Pittsburgh coalbed. The in situ pressure at a depth of 214 feet into the coalbed and the average gas and water flows from the five degasification holes were 3 lb/in2 gage and 860,000 ft3/d and 1.7 gal/min, respectively. On June 19, 1975, after 593 days of degasification, a compressor was installed and pipeline quality gas was introduced into a commercial pipeline. As of June 1, 1976, after 1,022 days of degasification, over 753 million cubic feet of gas had been drained and 117 million cubic feet of gas had been purchased by the gas company for use in the local community of Wadestown, W. Va. The gas drained to date is six times the gas estimated to be in the area subtended by the holes. Methane emissions at the working face of 1 West mains, Federal No. 2 mine has been reduced by 50 pct, proving the value of methane drainage by horizontal degasification holes drilled from shaft bottoms ahead of mining.

This publication has been prepared to supply manufacturers and industrial users a listing of mobile diesel-powered equipment and subassemblies approved and certified by the Bureau of Mines for use in noncoal mines. Testing of diesel-powered equipment is one phase of the Bureau's program of health and safety that concerns approval of electrical and diesel equipment designed to prevent explosions, fires, shocks, or toxic hazards in underground mines, when such equipment is used and maintained properly. Manufacturers submit machinery and component parts to the Bureau for study of their design, safety features, and use. Equipment must pass exacting tests and must meet strict requirements established through research and experience and listed in the Bureau's permissible schedules before the Bureau approves it as permissible for safe use in mines.
