This paper gives the cost and describes the mining of 55 tons of nickel-bearing rock by hand methods from a prospect in southern Nevada, June 15, 1937, by the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines. The geology, mineralogy, and problems related to future development also are discussed briefly. The main object was to obtain a 55-ton sample within the limited period during which funds were available; little time was available to make a first-hand detailed study of the possibility of commercial ore deposits being found. The sample was desired by the Metallurgical Division of the Bureau for experimental purposes at the Electro-Metallurgical Station at Boulder City, Nev. The term "ore" is used loosely in the following discussion to designate dike material containing nickel and copper, without consideration of its commercial value. The Bureau of Mines devised a new machine-test method for measuring carbon dioxide inspired by a wearer of self-contained breathing apparatus. The new method compares favorably in speed and precision with standard man-tests in which the apparatus is tested while actually worn, and is scheduled for use in future approval tests for facepiece carbon dioxide 'measurements. However, man-tests will still be used to measure the efficiency of the carbon dioxide sorbent materials in closed-circuit breathing apparatus.

The Ellington manganese deposit in Reynolds County J Mo., had been known for some time; and limited exploration, consisting of test pitting and sinking a shaft 54 feet deep on the property, had been done by private interests. Late in 1941, the Bureau of Mines cleaned, deepened, and sampled many of the existing pits and dug and sampled 27 new ones. The shaft was unwatered and sampled, and several pockets of manganese ore were trenched to determine their extent. Samples were analyzed and beneficiation tests on 1 ton of the ore were made at the Rolla, Mo., station of the Bureau of 'Mines. Results of the investigation indicated that the deposit was small and low in manganese content.

As the mines get older and the active workings get Farther and farther away from the original mine openings, it becomes increasingly difficult and expensive to ventilate most coal-mines properly. At the same time, the avenues of escape for those employed underground have become so extended' as often to make it impossible for them to make their way out of the mine in the event of a fire, mine explosion, or other emergency. Where such Conditions exist, the only satisfactory solution is to make new ventilation and emergency-escape openings near the active mine workings. At most mines this would necessitate sinking shafts, which is often slow and expensive.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the occurrence of slickensides in mine roof in the Pittsburgh coalbed in a portion of the Valley Camp No.3 mine in southwestern Pennsylvania to improve the potential for prediction of slicken-sided zones and determine the orientations of the most prominent slickensided planes. Two distinct types of slickensides were identified; those which were associated with clay veins observed in the coalbed (genetic), and those which were unrelated to any visible structure (nongenetic). The study draws three conclusions: (1) Nongenetic slickensides are not the result of tectonic forces, (2) both genetic and nongenetic slickensides tend to dip at an angle of 30°, and (3) genetic slickensides tend to be alined parallel to the trend of the clay vein and usually dip toward the center of the clay vein. A schematic roof bolting plan is presented that may provide improved roof support where slickensides are present. Roof stability could be improved by supplemental bolting in the direction normal to the plane of slickensides.

The compound ?-valerolactone has been identified in an acid fraction isolated from waste water collected from an in situ oil-shale retort. Infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance, and mass spectrometry were used by the Bureau of Mines to confirm the identification of a subfraction collected from a gas chromatograph.

THE STATISTICAL tables in this chapter present, country by country, the mineral production of the world in 1949-50. The figures are on a mine basis, unless otherwise indicated, except for cement, coke, and steel, which are measured at the processing plant. The tables are essentially a retabulation, by countries, of the 53 commodity world tables appearing in the various chapters of this volume. For lack of comprehensive information, data for the following minerals are excluded: Andalusite, aplite, asphalt, boron, bromine, calcite (optical), calcium chloride (natural), carbon dioxide, clay, columbium (niobium), diatomite (kieselguhr), dumortierite, emery, garnet (abrasive), gem stones (other than diamonds), germanium, greensand, grindstones, helium, indium, iodine, kyanite, lithium, magnesium compounds (other than magnesite), meerschaum, mineral pigments, monazite, natural gas, natural gasoline, oil shale, olivine, perlite, pumice, quartz crystal, radium, sand and gravel, selenium, sillimanite, sodium salts (other than common salt), stone, strontium, sulfur (byproduct), tantalum, tellurium, thallium, topaz (industrial), tripoli) uranium, vermiculite, wollastonite, and zirconium. In addition, a few minor geographic areas for which no statistics are available, are also omitted from the tabulation; it is believed that no significant quantities of minerals are mined in any of these areas. The statistics in these tables were derived principally from questionnaires sent, in cooperation with the United States Department of State, to the governments of each country. Research in connection with occupational diseases, including silicosis or, more definitely, pneumoconiosis, has been prosecuted much more actively in North American countries during the past 5 or 10 years than in any other known period. This applies particularly to the United States, owing largely to the fact that in recent years compensation for ill health presumed to be caused by industrial work of certain kinds is being paid to a far greater extent in this country than previously. Most other countries have had occupational-disease laws for many years. Court rulings in the United States, which started 5 or 6 years ago, have given a few heavy verdicts in connection with ill health or death caused, or alleged to have been caused, by some phase of occupational work other than traumatic injury, and these have called attention to the fact that ill health and even incapacitation can be caused by some kinds of employment. With the onset of the world-wide financial depression, which resulted in permanent abandonment of many business or industrial enterprises (among them mines) in the United States, the workers frequently believed that they could expect nothing in the future from their former employers, hence they felt free to demand monetary benefits or damages because of ill health which they suffered, or thought they suffered, because of their previous employment. The result was a flood of lawsuits and. compensation claims for occupational disease, particularly where dust was involved.

Magnesium oxysulfate cement has been specially formulated as a sealant in underground coal mines for reducing sloughing of shale roofs and coal ribs, for reducing air losses through block stoppings, for constructing sprayed stop-pings over approved jute cloth or metal lath, and for reducing combustibility of polyurethane foam. A standard spray machine (Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) approved) was used for the underground testing. Our research shows that a 1/2-inch coating reduces shale and coal sloughing, reduces air losses through block stoppings, and prevents fire propagation through a metal tunnel lined with polyurethane foam. During the underground tests, excess mixing water was used to improve pumping the slurry to the spray nozzle. This was later found to increase shrinkage cracks in the cured coatings. Controlling excess water is important to an acceptable coating.

A new prototype bag nozzle system has been designed under a Bureau of Mines contract to reduce dust generated during the bagging operation on fluidized air baggers. A field analysis of the new system has shown that the bag operator's dust exposure was reduced 83 pet. The amount of blowback was reduced 89 pet, which corresponds to a significant product savings. The new prototype system has been operating for a substantial period of time with no major problems.

Coal-mine officials and those who are preparing to become officials should be familiar with the instruments and devices that are employed rather commonly in and around mines and should know how to use them with safety and efficiency. Among these axe instruments and devices used in determining the pressure, velocity, volume, and certain other conditions of ventilation and in detecting the more common mine gases, such as methane, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulphide, or a deficiency of that very important agent, oxygen. Water gages, anemometers, barometers, psychrometers, flame safety lamps, lamp-testing boxes, and methane, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulphide detectors are described and their use and operation discussed in this paper.

The heat of combustion of TaC0.996 was determined by oxygen bomb calorimetry to be -302.8 ±0.4 kcal/mole. The corresponding heat of formation of TaC0.996 is -35.4 ±0.5 kcal/mole, and the calculated heat of formation of TaC1.00 is -35.5 ±0.5 kcal/mole.

The vapor pressure of copper in a series of liquid copper - nickel alloys was determined by the carrier gas method . The activity and activity coefficient of copper were calculated over the entire range of alloy composition . These data show a slight positive deviation from ideal behavior . The activity coefficient of copper was highest ( 2.10 ) at 0.05 mole fraction copper and approached unity at concentrations above 0.85 mole fraction copper . The results for nickel were calculated from the copper data by the graphical integration of the Gibbs - Duhem equation .

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report provides a detailed description of the Bureau-designed modified shearer clearer system. Engineering drawings are provided for all major components of this system. The modified shearer clearer system is a revised version of the original system and is intended to improve the ventilation around both cutting drums. The original shearer clearer technique was solely a dust control technique that has been effective in lowering shearer operators' dust exposures. The technique uses a series of water sprays that not only knock down a portion of the dust cloud but also act as small fans that move a substantial amount of air and keep the dust cloud from dispersing over the shearer body. The modified version is composed of two additional spray blocks for improved air movement around both cutting drums, thus lowering methane levels and the likelihood of an ignition. A laboratory study performed with the modified version in a full-scale longwall gallery resulted in a 73-pet reduction in methane concentrations at the shearer machine for both cut directions. The air-moving capabilities of the system provide more turbulence at the cutting drums and reduce methane levels.

Mining and reclamation procedures that meet the requirements of SMCRA are illustrated on pages 8 and 9 for each of the three major surface coal mining methods -- area mining, contour mining, and mountaintop removal mining. The three methods involve the same basic steps: clearing the land of trees and other vegetation, removing topsoil and overburden, mining the coal, and reclaiming the land. Although all three methods would not usually occur on any single site, the illustration facilitates comparison of mining and reclamation methods and aids basic understanding of the reclamation processes that take place under SMCRA. Area Mining The area mining method is commonly used to mine coal in the flat to moderately rolling terrain found principally in the western and midwestern states. After the overburden is excavated down to a coal seam, the mining area is enlarged horizontally to expose more coal for removal. In the West, where coal seams are commonly 10 to 20 feet thick (and range up to 100 feet thick in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming), the life of some mines maybe more than 50 years. In the Midwest, coal seams are typically 3 to 7 feet thick and 75 to 100 feet below the surface. Because of the large expanse of area mines and their relatively unrestricted sites, enormous equipment is used to remove overburden and reconstruct the land. The area mining operation in the illustration is on land that was formerly used for farming. The drawing shows that the agricultural use is being reestablished immediately following reclamation. Mining is proceeding across the land toward the left side of the site. The initial excavation was made far enough away from the stream along the right edge of the site to prevent damage to the water supply. The coal under most of the site has been removed, and reclamation has been completed on some of the land. For example, some of the cattle in the foreground and those in the feedlot behind the silo are grazing on reclaimed land that has been mined. At the far left of the illustration, topsoil from the unmined area is being removed by scrapers, transported across the area of active mining, and immediately spread on the land on the right, which is being reclaimed. Samples of low-grade oxide manganese ores were procured from two southern Utah properties by examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines during an investigation of manganese mineral deposits of continental United States. A 2-ton lot of ore was obtained from the Blackbird group of mining claims in Paiute County, 11 miles southeast of Marysvale, Utah. The deposit was described as an intrusive sheet or sill of altered brecciated rhyolite cemented together by manganese oxide minerals. A 2-ton sample from the Black John property, situated 32 miles northeast of Kanab, Kane County, Utah, was taken from open cuts on the vein. The blanket-type vein deposit consisted of nodules and streaks of manganese imbedded in compact gray clay.

"The Baboquivari mining district is about 60 miles southwest of Tucson, Ariz., the present railroad shipping point. The values are silver and gold. The silver is largely associated with the black oxides of manganese. The ore is highly oxidized, and careful panning shows only a very small amount of pyrite. Our sample analyzed as follows:A flotation mill has been installed in the district, but it does not concentrate the precious metals satisfactorily. Our best laboratory flotation results were obtained by grinding to pass 65-mesh and floating with Xanthate or standard flotation oils plus sodium sulphide and polysulphide. This sulphidizing method gave a concentration of 32 per cent of the silver and 80 per cent of the gold, which about equals plant practice.We do not know of an instance where the oxidized forms of manganese have been concentrated satisfactorily by flotation.Plain cyanide on the original ore extracts practically all of the gold but only one-third of the silver. A preliminary deoxidizing roast, using producer gas or powdered coal, gives a calcine from which cyanide dissolves about 90 per cent of the gold and 75 per cent of the silver. This method of treatment, known as the Clevenger-Caron process, is described in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 226.Preliminary treatment with sulphur dioxide by burning pyrite or sulphur and passing this gas into the pulp until all of the contained manganese is dissolved or changed in form best prepares the ore for cyanidation. The acid consumption will vary with the percentage of manganese and other soluble constituents. Neither gold or silver is dissolved by this acid treatment. The washed residue gives maximum cyanide dissolution of the gold and silver with minimum loss of cyanide,"

Medium-frequency (MF) techniques have been successfully .[pplied] to the problem of radio voice communications in both coal and metal and nonmental mines. Long range is achieved by taking advantage of existing mine conductors that carry and propagate the signal over vast areas. It is very likely that in the near future such systems will become the referred method for general mine communications. MF techniques can also be applied to the areas of in-mine control and monitoring. Preliminary work in this area is described. In a western mine, locomotives are being operated under MF remote control in a loading operation. In several eastern mines, MF has been evaluated as a method for monitoring the status of devices in remote areas of the mines. All control and monitor information uses existing mine conductors.
