Methane-flow and pressure data taken from a mine in the Pocahontas No. 3 coalbed are compared with flow rates from lump coal obtained in laboratory experiments. From this, it is concluded that the main source of gas is the intact coalbed rather than a "crushed zone" near the working face. The permeability and sorption capacity of the intact coalbed are calculated and gas emission rates are theoretically accounted for.

The behaviour of wire ropes used in mine hoisting is not well understood. In an effort to improve this understanding, the structure of round-strand wire ropes was analysed. This report provides a generalised mathematical model that completely describes the geometry of the wires. It consists of two sets of vector equations and is valid for any round-strand wire rope. One set of equations is used to trace the paths of wires that have the form of a single helix. The other is used for the paths of double helical wires. The specific model for a 33-mm 6x1 9 Seale, IWRC, right regular lay wire rope was presented as an example. The paths and the geometric properties of the wires which include the path length per lay of strand, the curvature, and the torsion were determined from this model. In future work, the model could be used to conduct stress analysis for the wires in the deformed rope at a given rope strain and also to study the effect of wear and breaking of wires on strength loss for the various round-strand wire ropes used in mine hoisting.

Some of the most difficult coal mine roof in the U.S. can be found in the Illinois Basin. Factors contributing to the high roof fall rate include: weak moisture-sensitive roof rock, high horizontal stress, and limited longwall mining. The depth of cover ranges from 90-1,000 ft and roof damage from horizontal stress can be severe. Moisture sensitive-roof rock is common above the Springfield-Harrisburg Herrin #5 and #6 seams in the Illinois Basin, and contributes to roof skin deterioration. The roof fall rate increases significantly in the humid summer months. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has shown, using lab and field studies, that highly moisture-sensitive roof rock can be directly correlated to poor roof conditions. Controlling the skin is the key to reducing rock fall injuries, and roof screening is, by far, the best remedy. Illinois Basin coal operators have been successful in reducing the number of rock fall injuries in recent years. NIOSH has documented best practices for screen installation which has resulted in safe, efficient operations. Other solutions to skin failure include: the use of denser five bolts per row patterns to reduce spans between bolts, systematic supplemental support in intersections, straps and large pans protecting operators, and air conditioning to remove moisture from the intake air.

The development of an new industry, which must prepare its marketable products at or near the source of the raw material, and ship them to a market which may cover half a nation, is more or less influenced by a number of natural and cultural conditions such as (1) location of plants with respect to a large market, (2) climatic conditions, (3) transportation facilities, (4) labor supply, and (5) water supply. An effort is made in this pager to give in detail a number of the more important of these conditions as they affect, either favorably or unfavorably, the development of the oil-shale resources of southeastern Indiana. The utilization of the New Albany formation for the production of oil will be similar to a large scale low-grade ore proposition in which the raw material can be obtained in very large quantities at a relatively low cost. It appears, therefore, in considering the value of this shale or its economic position in relation to other oil shales, tie cost of mining and preparation for the retort are of prime importance.

In this Bureau of Mines report, a previously developed theory of reverse stratified flow in ventilated duct fires is applied to mine-related ventilation systems that utilize an exhaust fan to supply the forced airflows. The coupling between a fire and the ventilation airflow in a single-entry duct is analyzed to relate the air velocity in the absence of a fire to air velocity during a fire. By combining the derived coupling equations with the results of the previously developed theory of reverse stratified flow, it is possible to calculate critical flow velocities required to prevent reverse stratified flow in the event of a duct fire. The sample calculations shown agree with the few experimental results available from small-scale tunnel fires.

Preliminary examination of the McCormick chromite property was made by the Federal Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines during the spring and summer of 1943. In October 1943 an exploratory project was undertaken by the Bureau in cooperation with the Survey and was completed in February 1944.The urgent need during the war for high-grade lump chromite such as produced at the McCormick mine, was one of the pertinent reasons for the project. The McCormick mine is situated about 12 miles southwest of the town of Sonora, in the foothill belt of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Tuolumne County, Calif. The chromite occurs as irregularly shaped lenses in masses of dunite contained in a steeply dipping, sheared, serpentinized zone of peridotite, near a contact with granodiorite.

Since 1969, the Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines, has carried out communications research. Research has been directed toward developing emergency and nonemergency mine communications. This paper gives an overview of the progress made in the last two years. Particular emphasis is given to the overall program, noise and signal measurements, systems studies, guidelines, products, and demonstrations now being carried on in operating mines.

The danger from coal dust in mines has been thoroughly demon- strated by experiment, and consequently the study of the inflam- mability of coal dust suspended in air, that is, the readiness with which a cloud of coal dust inflames, is of decided importance to those engaged in coal mining. Much knowledge has been gained from the work done in the large galleries constructed at official and semiofficial stations in this country and abroad, but the study of the coal-dust problem in these galleries requires so much time and is so costly that there is need of a reliable laboratory method for obtaining a classi- fication of the great variety of dusts that occur in mines. The investigation described in this paper was an attempt to devise such a method. It was a preliminary investigation, and work in the same direction is being continued by the Bureau of Mines. As Mr. Frazer has severed his connection with the bureau, it is deemed advisable to publish the results of his study substantially as he prepared them, with little attempt to draw conclusions or to show the bearing of the results on other studies now in progress. The results of these studies and a full discussion of the significance of the laboratory investiga- tions will be published in future reports of the Bureau of Mines. The reader should remember that any laboratory method, since it involves conditions that differ so greatly from those of actual mining, should be thoroughly tested, and the results obtained by it should be confirmed by experiments conducted on a scale simulating mining conditions before final conclusions are drawn. The need of a laboratory method has long been felt, and several investigators have devised apparatus and methods. The work done by Vital, Holtzwart and Von Meyer, Bedson and Widdas, Le Chate- lier, and that of the British Coal Dust Commission is of great interest in this connection. The association of automotive fuel composition with exhaust reactivity was studied in an experimental program that involved testing with different automotive engines and with gasolines of varied composition. Results showed clearly the exhaust reactivity to increase with increasing levels of polyalkylbenzenes in the fuel. No other systematic patterns of high significance were detected in the association of exhaust reactivity with several broadly defined groups of fuel components. For the purposes of this study, had it been possible, fuel composition should have been defined and expressed in terms of component groups such that the potential for exhaust reactivity would be the same within each group and different from group to group. Classification of fuel components in terms of the paraffins-olefins-aromatics groups does not meet the latter requirements. For appropriate classification of fuel components more information is needed on the combustion .of hydrocarbons in the multicylinder internal combustion engine. Statistical analysis of the mass emissions data showed significant car and fuel effects on hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, total aldehydes, and formaldehyde emission levels and on total photochemical reactivity. Car-fuel interactions were not significant at the 90-pct level. Correlations were found between mass emission parameters and fuel composition.

Single- and two-stage tests were made with 6-inch, coal-cleaning hydrocyclones to determine the effect of hydrocyclone geometry, operating conditions, and feed composition on performance. Most of the testing was conducted in an open-circuit pilot plant that had a maximum capacity of about 9 tons per hour. The coals used in the investigation had top sizes of 1/4 inch and 28 mesh. Considerable latitude was found in the range of geometry variables that could be used without affecting performance adversely, although a certain minimum ratio of overflow to underflow openings had to be maintained for best operation. Two-stage cleaning proved distinctly better than operation with a single hydrocyclone, because clean coal lost in the refuse product of the primary unit can be partly recovered in the secondary. There is an unusually great difference in the specific gravities at which the individual sizes of the feed are separated in the hydrocyclone. This militates against high efficiency because maximum yield occurs when all sizes are cleaned at the same specific gravity. The size composition of the feed and, more particularly, the size composition of the impurity have a greater influence on the efficiency attainable in the hydrocyclone than in most other types of fine-coal cleaners.

"The production of silica and magnesia crucibles in the induction furnace was attempted and achieved in the laboratory of the Pacific Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines. This work was undertaken at the request of other stations for laboratory crucibles of a certain specified wall thickness and capacity.The essential new parts of this work are the development of a technique for the high-frequency furnace production of silica crucibles of greater wall thickness than could be readily fabricated from commercial fused silica, and for heavy-walled magnesia. crucibles of great density and mechanical strength. A considerable bode of patent literature on the Production of fused silica ware in resistor-type furnaces was examined, but it furnished no significant help for the present problem. Similarly sintered magnesia refractories are often made for technical purposes, but for use at temperatures of 2000o C. or over, the material must be sintered at higher temperatures than can be attained by combustion firing, and the very great shrinkage encountered at these temperatures requires special methods. Small crucibles. of magnesia fused in the electric arc have been made by Tritton and Hansen,3 but the practical size of such containers is very limited.Many different methods of making crucibles in the induction furnace were tried before satisfactory results were obtained. The following description covers only the most satisfactory method, which produced crucibles of excellent quality in a reasonable time and with a moderate expenditure of power and materials."

The mucus secreted in the respiratory tract provides the first barrier against inhaled particulate and gaseous toxicants. Trachea removed from pathogen-free rats were maintained as organ cultures and used to study the effects of coal dust exposure on the synthesis of mucin. The high molecular weight isotopically labeled (3H-glucosamine, 14Cleucine or 35S-sulfate) mucin could be purified by gel filtration, treatment with testicular hyaluronidase, ion exchange chromatography, delipidation and CsBr density gradient centrifugation. To examine effect of coal dust on mucin production, groups of explant cultures were exposed to media containing coal dust at 100 µg per ml every 2 days for 2 weeks while control cultures were treated with media without dust. Analysis of the spent culture media showed that treatment with dust markedly decreased the production of nondialysable glycoproteins as well as hyaluronidase-resistant acid-precipitable fraction consisting mainly of mucin. Since the synthesis of protein was not affected to the same extent the decrease in mucin production is not entirely due to cell death. In separate experiments rats were subjected to in vivo coal dust exposure in inhalation chambers and tracheae of these and control rats were removed for explant cultures. The incorporation of precursor isotopes into mucin by these explant cultures are being examined. During August 1943, the Bureau of Mines undertook sampling and measuring of the Kennedy zinc tailing pile near Hazel Green, Lafayette County, south-western Wisconsin, as part of a general investigation of this lead-and zinc-producing area at a time when it was extremely important to increase the production of metals for the Nation's War program. The tailing pile was the residue from old jigging plants that treated ore from the Kennedy mine, one of the oldest and. largest mines in the district. Because retreatment of tailing by modern milling methods was proving economically successful at other sites in the southwestern Wisconsin field, the Bureau?s investigation was designed to assist the potential operators in evaluating the feasibility of a retreatment operation at this site. The study involved measurement of the tailing pile and sampling by means of auger to determine the average metal content within the narrowest possible limits. A total of 46 auger holes ranging in depths up to 40 feet and aggregating 886.5 feet of bore were drilled in the tailing pile, and weighted samples from each hole were analyzed and averaged to determine the zinc and iron content of the tailing.

The DuBois fluorite property in the southwestern part of Hardin County, Ill., has been active intermittently since 1904 and has produced an estimated total of 1,000 to 2,000 tons. The persistence of the vein and the stratigraphy suggested extensions of the ore body formerly mined. The Bureau of Mines investigated the property by core drilling early in 1944. Four holes were bored which totaled 1,106 feet and extended along a strike length of 1,150 feet. The data obtained in the course of the investigation are presented in this report.

The tests described herein were made in the course of a series of experiments on coal-mine ventilation factors which the Bureau of Mines has beep; conducting for the past two years at its experimental mine near Bruceton, Pa. The object of the present tests was to determine the leakage of two air locks which had been placed in the experimental mine as hart of the equipment for tests on friction factors. Position of the Doors. The first or inner lock gas across the aircourse between No. 1 and No. 2 left butt entries, and forced the air through these butts. An air-measuring suction in No. 1 butt determined tae volume passing at tent point.

Several federal and state agencies have promulgated regulations that require the installation of operator protective structures on mobile equipment used in mining, construction, agriculture and logging industries. These regulations cover many different types of vehicles, from small farm tractors to large rubber-tired front-end loaders, and require structures that help protect the operator from death or injury from vehicle overturns, from falling tree tops and logs, from falling rocks, and from tree limbs in clearing operations. Two general types of vehicle operator protective structures have evolved over the past twenty years. The first of these is the "Roll-Over Protective Structure'' or "ROPS" that is essentially a "roll bar" or "roll cage" that provides a relatively safe area for the vehicle operator if the vehicle should tip over and roll. The second protective structure is the "Falling Object Protective Structure" or "FOPS" that provides overhead protection against falling material. The terms "ROPS" and "FOPS" are often used interchangeably (sometimes inaccurately) with "cabs", “canopies” , "roll bars" , protective structures" and other such descriptive names. In this report, "ROPS" describes the function of the structure; "FOPS" also describes a particular function. Thus a ROPS/FOPS could describe a cab or a canopy that provides both roll-over protection and falling object protection. “MESA” is used as an abbreviation for the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration; "USBM" is used to abbreviate the U, S. Bureau of Mines.

Sulfur content data from Bureau of Mines routine analyses of 1,060 United States crude oils were used with crude oil production data for the years 1956-66 to prepare tables and charts that illustrate the volume and percentage distribution according to sulfur content of crude oil produced in 10 geographical areas of the United States. Similar relationships for foreign crude oils based on analyses of 201 crude oils and production during 1966 are illustrated for Africa, Canada, Middle East, and South America. Tables are included giving field name, sulfur content, geologic name and age of producing formation, depth of producing formation, and production during 1966 for 882 United States crude oils and 201 .foreign crude oils. Between 1955 and 1966 the average sulfur content of crude oils produced in the United States decreased from 0.73 to 0.67 percent.

"This study by the Federal Bureau of Mines was confined to pillaring with continuous mining machines and to mines where total extraction is practiced. Many different conditions and practices in as many coalbeds as possible in Pennsylvania were observed.Pillar extraction or pillaring can be the most productive part of coal mining if done properly; but it also can be the most dangerous if done improperly.Because of the need for more careful planning before and caution during pillaring, many mining companies resort to the undesirable practice of stumping or hogging of pillars with subsequent unnecessary waste of valuable natural resources. Pillaring can be done at reasonable cost and safely, as proven at many mines where complete extraction is practiced and enviable cost and accident records are maintained.Although continuous mining machines are bulky and sometimes difficult to maneuver, they have been used with great success in pillaring. Occasionally, however, a machine is caught, or men are injured by a fall during pillar recovery. This Bureau survey was conducted to ascertain how safe and successful pillaring (especially the removal of final stumps in lifts or the final stump of a pillar), is accomplished in some mines, while others have considerable difficulty under similar conditions.The Bureau hopes the information to be presented in this publication will prove beneficial to those who wish to recover more pillar coal and to improve their accident record during such procedures."

"According to the dictionary,3 an accident is an event that takes place without one's foresight or expectation, often an undesigned, sudden, and unforeseen occurrence of an afflictive or unfortunate character. However, actual experience with accidents, the second most important cause of death in the United States,4 and a more extensive and scientific inventigation of their causes indicate that from 75 to 90 per cent of accidents are avoidable.5 This is borne out by the results of a three-year study of the accident records of 64,000 motor vehicle operators in New York6 which show that certain drivers are prone to accidents, that accident experience is traceable to certain causes, and that accidents don't just ""happen,"" It is estimated that 97,000 persons were killed by accidents in the United States in 1929 and 15,000,000 were injured. Of these about 23,000 deaths were due to so-called industrial accidents. In a list of accident rates by industries, compiled by the National Safety Council7 from reports of member establishments, mining heads the list, in both frequency (74.43 per 1,000,000 man-hours worked) and severity (9.9 days lost per 1,000 man-hours worked). These figures are very much higher than for any other industry; theindustries showing figures most comparable to mining are meat packing with a frequency rate of 55.94 and a severity rate of 1.47, construction with a frequency rate of 50.41 and a severity rate of 4.62, and refrigeration with a frequency rate of 43.35 and a severity rate of 3.04.While there is no way to determine the actual cost of all accidents from a monetary standpoint, estimates indicate that the cost will run into hundreds of millions of dollars annually.Cost of accidents in metal mines.- The United States Bureau of Mines obtains accurate figures on the number of lost-time nonfatal accidents as well as fatal accidents in the metal-mining industry.8 In 1926 the metal mines employed 127,823 men; 430 men were killed and 30,350 men received lost-time but nonfatal injuries as a result of accidents. Each of these fatal and nonfatal injuries averaged 114 days lost time, computing a fatality as 6,000 days lost time. This is equivalent to 3,523,944 days time lost due to accident, or at $5 per day per man, to a wage loss of $17,619,720. Deducting one-ninth of this figure for compensation paid, the metal miner loses in wage annually about $15,700,000, or about $122 per individual. This average loss per individual includes the cost of fatal accidents reckoned at 6,000 days or $30,000, but even if the loss in time due to fatal accidents be deducted, the average cost to each individual metal miner each year for nonfatal accidents is about $32. Estimating the loss to the metal-mine employer as about the same as that to the employee, the annual cost of metal-mine accidents to the employer is about $15,700,000 and to the employer and miner is $31,400,000."

A hydraulic scaling rig was placed in operation at the Bureau of Mines oil-shale mine near Rifle, Colo., in 1953. The rig consists of a self-leveling platform mounted on a hydraulic-powered boom. The boom is mounted on the bed of a diesel truck. The equipment provides a movable work platform from which two men can work in safety and comfort while barring loose rock from the backs and walls of the rooms, pillars, and haulageways. INTRODUCTION As a part of its synthetic liquid fuels program the Bureau of Mines has developed a mine in the richer oil-shale beds of the Green River formation near Rifle, Colo. An important part of the work of the Oil-Shale Mining Branch is investigation of techniques for low-cost mining of oil shale on a commercial basis. It is evident that scaling loose rock from the high backs and walls of the mine represents a portion of the direct mining cost. This paper describes the development of a scaling rig for operation in the upper heading of the mine, which is 39 feet high.
