The Bureau of Mines sampled a gold-bearing schist series 50 miles east of Nome near Bluff, a dormant mining camp on the southern shore of the Seward Peninsula, Alaska. Gold is unevenly distributed through a section of a schist series that extends from the coast northward 4,500 feet. In this section the schists dip westward 20 to 38 degrees and have an outcrop width of about 1,000 feet and a normal width of about 500 feet. An intensely fractured zone within the schists averages 0.015 to 0.017 ounce of gold and 0.03 to 0.05 ounce of silver per ton for outcrop widths of 200 to almost 500 feet. The grade of the remainder of the schist series ranges downward to scant traces. Gold eroded from these schists collected in solution channels in metalimestones to form the Daniels Creek placers, which also extend from the beach southward under the sea for an unknown distance. The lode sources of the gold placers elsewhere in the southern Seward Peninsula may be similar schists that occupy a similar position in the metasedimentary series.

Acid pollution from abandoned mines causes serious contamination of major streams in coal mining areas. In Pennsylvania alone it is estimated that 3000 miles of streams are devoid of fish and plant life because of coal mine effluent.1 The pollution arises because water and oxygen react with iron sulfide in the mine cavity to produce sulfuric acid and iron sulfate, which later find their way back into surface streams. Two general approaches to the problem are possible: (1) prevent the acid-forming reaction from taking place, (2) treat the acid mine water after it is formed so that it will not be harmful to the ecology when discharged into streams and other surface waters. The work described in this report belongs in the first category - it was based on the assumption that acid formation in the mine cavity can be prevented by keeping water (one of the reactants) out of the mine. This was to be accomplished by-forming a waterproof seal over the mine cavity which would prevent the seepage of surface water into the mine. It was planned to form such a seal at or near the surface of the ground by applying latex to the soil. Ideally a dilute latex would be applied to the soil and would penetrate to a depth of two to three feet below the surface where it would be coagulated by reacting with a constituent of the soil or by other means., A seal below the surface of the soil would have several advantages over a surface seal - it would not be subject to destruction by traffic, frost or vegetation and, more important, it would allow the use of the top soil for many agricultural purposes. A preliminary feasibility experiment was performed prior to application for the present grant. It showed that it was indeed possible to form a sub-surface seal by means of latex. A core of soil was obtained locally (Wayne, N. J.) by driving a 6.5 cm inside diameter steel pipe about 100 cm long into subsoil for a distance of 71 cm. The soil was retained within the pipe for this experiment. A part of the free space above the soil in the pipe was charged with water, and the seepage rate of the soil after it had become saturated was 15 ml/min under a total head (wet soil plus supernatant column of water) of 92 cm. After the supernatant water had drained completely, 100 ml of 5% rubber latex was added and allowed to seep into the soil. This was followed by additional water and the seepage rate was found to be 2 ml/min under the same head. This seepage rate remained unchanged when remeasured on the following day. Since there was no visible evidence of the latex in the collected drain water it is presumed to have been retained by the soil.

Develop a down-hole replaceable diamond core bit that will reduce overall drilling costs and increase total available drilling time per hole. Approach A one-piece diamond core drill bit of unique geometric shape has been designed, fabricated and field tested. The bit can be withdrawn (or replaced) from the bottom of the well-bore without removing the drill rods from the hole, saving a significant amount of non-productive drilling time. How It Works The replaceable bit system consists of two basic subsystems: the removable core bit, and the equipment necessary to replace the wornout bit without pulling the drill rods out of the hole. The geometric configuration of the bit is that of a one-piece diamond studded cutting element created by "slicing off" two parallel sides of a conventional diamond cone bit. This geometric configuration, along with some minor modifications to the outer core barrel, allows the bit to be rotated in two planes and, with the retraction-insertion tools, raised or lowered through the interior of the drill rods using a conventional wire-line system. For example, to retrieve the bit, a retraction tool is lowered through the drill rods using a conventional wire-line system and at the hole bottom, the tool automatically orients itself within the outer core barrel.

To clean coal mine air by developing a low-cost scrubber suitable for belt transfer and similar applications. Approach Design a scrubber operated by water only, with no moving parts. Use conventional water spray nozzles located within a duct to both move and clean the air. Use a droplet eliminator to get the water droplets and mist back out of the airstream. How It Works Conventional scrubbers require a mechanical fan driven by either an electric or a hydraulic motor. They also require water sprays and some type of scrubbing mechanism. The water powered scrubber, however, offers higher reliability over conventional scrubbers since it utilizes the water sprays to both move the air and scrub the particulate from the air. Conventional water spray nozzles are placed near one end of a rectangular duct open at both ends. The sprays are directed towards the far end of the duct where a stationary wave blade water droplet eliminator is located. Movement of the water spray droplets coming from the nozzles generates (by momentum transfer) an air movement In the same direction as the sprays. This report discusses the Bureau of Mines' efforts to develop partial protective structures for operators of low-coal shuttle cars. In coal seams 48 in high or less, full-coverage canopies are generally difficult or may be impossible to implement on high-speed face equipment due to the restrictions they impose on the operator's vision and comfort. Lim- ited coverage is one alternative that provides an acceptable level of operator protection in thin-seam applications where conventional full- coverage canopies cannot be used. Three possible limited-coverage de- sign scenarios (roll bars, sliding canopies, and flip-top canopies) were designed, fabricated, and evaluated for low-coal shuttle cars. All three designs were determined to be feasible and desirable for low-coal shuttle car application.

Since 1988, there have been 17 documented incidents in the United States and Canada in which carbon monoxide (CO) is suspected to have migrated through ground strata into occupied enclosed spaces as a result of proximate trench blasting or surface mine blasting. These incidents resulted in 39 suspected or medically verified carbon monoxide poisonings and one fatality. To better understand the factors contributing to this hazard, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) carried out studies in a 12-foot diameter sphere to identify key factors that may enhance the levels of CO associated with the detonation of several commercial trenching explosives. The gaseous detonation products from emulsions, a watergel, and ANFO blasting agents as well as gelatin dynamite, TNT, and Pentolite boosters were measured in an argon atmosphere and compared with those for the same explosives detonated in air. Test variables included explosive formulation, wrapper, aluminum addition, oxygen balance, and density. Major contributing factors to CO production, under these laboratory test conditions, are presented. The main finding is the high CO production associated with the lack of afterburning in an oxygen poor atmosphere. Fumes measurements are compared with the manufacturer’s reported IME fume class and with the Federal Relative Toxicity Standard 30 CFR Part 15 in order to gain an understanding of the relative toxicity of some explosives used in trench blasting.

Recent research conducted by NIOSH, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory showed that electrical current levels permitted under parent regulations may not limit cable temperatures to less than 90 °C in reeled trailing cables. Reeled cables, tightly wrapped with many turns, ell carrying current in an enclosed space, can become overheated due to poor heat transfer. This overheating can cause the cable insulation to soften and become easily damaged. The damaged insulation reduces the life of the cable and can lead to shock, electrocution, and mine foes. This paper describes a method of measuring the conductor temperature of untie trailing cables during no anal operation. The temperature is measured using a 50/175 micrometer Graded Index Multimode Optical Fiber located in the center of the metallic conductors. Distributed temperature measurements arc made using an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR). This system is capable of measuring temperature with an accuracy of plus or minus one degree centigrade over a length of 4 km at 1-m intervals. With this unique way of measuring temperature, tests can be conducted simulating actual mine conditions and provide important data to allow MSHA's Approval and Certification Center to develop approval criteria for cyclically rated reeled machines.

Bulk carriers, freighters, and tankers are the three classes of marine vessels engaged in transporting mineral commodities. However, vessels in each of these categories are not devoted wholly to mineral commodity transport. Bulk carriers move agricultural products as well as crude minerals and mineral fertilizers, as ore/bulk/oil carriers also do. Freighters, owing to their great variety, can be devoted wholly to hauling mineral products or wholly to moving nonmineral goods, as well as carrying mixed mineral and nonmineral cargoes. They include general cargo carriers, full containerships, partial containerships, roll-on/roll-off ships, and barge carriers. Tankers, although largely engaged in moving crude oil and refinery products, also transport liquid chemicals, molasses, wine, liquefied natural gas, and other fluids. Although physical characteristics of vessels, such as sue, draft, crew requirements, and type of propulsion system, as well as fuel costs, have an undeniable influence on shipping industry performance, problems of and changes in the quantity and quality and types of material moved also significantly affect the shipping sector of the world economy. Unfortunately, comprehensive data in this regard are not available.

The Bureau of Mines identified and evaluated major sources of quartz dust during overburden drilling at a surface coal mine, The relative contribution of each source to the total dust hazard was estimated, using personal gravimetric and instantaneous dust-sampling devices. No attempt was made to determine actual dust generation rates. The major sources of dust at the drill rig during dry drilling opera-tions were the collector dump, drill shroud leakage, and drill stem seal leakage, These sources contributed 90 pct of the respirable dust and 89 pet of the respirable quartz dust generated during drilling, The collector dump cycle (21.6 pct of total drilling time) accounted for 38 pct of the respirable dust and 41 pct of the respirable quartz dust, with peak dust concentrations reaching 68 mg/m3. Shroud and drill stem leakage contributed 28 and 24 pct of the respirable dust and 32 and 16 pct of the respirable quartz dust, respectively. A dragline and second drill rig contributed the remaining 10 pct of dust and 11 pct of quartz dust. Gravimetric dust samples collected inside the drill cab and outside, near the cab door, averaged 1.65 and 1.43 mg/m3, respectively, with 6 pct respirable quartz.

The literature has been surveyed and values recalculated for the heats and free energies of formation of solid rare-earth compounds at 298° K. In most instances it was necessary to estimate the entropies. Thermodynamic properties of aqueous rare-earth ions have also been calculated. INTRODUCTION The accumulation of thermochemical data on rare-earth compounds in recent years makes it possible to review the subject and to obtain more consistent and more reliable information than was available previously.

SUMMARY The objective of this program was to develop a system to extinguish coal mine fires by remote sealing of the underground passageways. The system developed had to be versatile enough to function under a wide range of operating conditions, including large variations in passageway geometry, depth of mine, water conditions, both in the mine and at the surface, and rubble in the mine passage. The system developed had to include instrumentation for the remote probing of the passageway prior to sealing, a system for sealing the mine passages, and instrumentation for remote monitoring of the quality of the seal during and after construction. These objectives were successfully achieved during this program. The remote mine sealing capability of the system was satisfactc rely demonstrated in a field test conducted at the Eastern Associated Coal Corporation Federal No. 1 Mine in Grant Town, West Virginia. The remote sealing consists of: (1) A sonar initial probing system which can operate satisfactorily even in the presence of dense smoke. The system is capable of determining both the local passageway geometry, identifying the presence of cribs and other obstructions, and the position of the borehole in the mine passage. (2) A mine sealing material system which utilizes fly ash for making the complete seal or as a bulk filler in conjunction with a urethane, froth foam, seal topping system. The choice of using fly ash alone or fly ash with foam topping depends on a number of factors, such as quality of seal desired, time available per seal, depth of borehole, passageway geometry, and water holding require¬ment. An accurate assessment of the vertical stress on a coal seam at depth is important for mine design. Vertical stress calculation techniques presently available either are not sufficiently accurate or cannot handle complex surface topography. Therefore, the U.S. Bureau of Mines developed a computerized method to calculate vertical stress exerted on surfaces at depth that includes the effect of topography. Two input data sets are required: a digital elevation model containing topographic elevations and a coal seam file defining coal seam elevations at depth. Boussinesq's equation then quantifies the vertical stress resulting from topography. The computerized method was tested on a coal seam overlain by a complex topography where a vertical stress map encompassing several square miles was produced. Results show that depth mitigates the affects of surface topography, while the coal seam topography has a direct effect on the vertical stress. In comparison to the computerized method, the direct stress method overestimates stress under hills and underestimates stress under valleys. The largest difference between the two methods occurs under the steepest topographic relief. A limitation of the computerized method is that stresses cannot be accurately determined near an outcrop.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted a joint survey to determine the range of coal particle sizes found in dust samples collected from intake airways of U.S. coal mines. The last comprehensive survey of this type was performed in the 1920’s. The size of the coal dust is relevant to the amount of rock dust required to inert the coal dust, with more rock dust needed to inert finer sizes of coal dust. Dust samples were collected by MSHA inspectors from several mines in each of MSHA’s ten bituminous Coal Mine Health and Safety Districts. Samples were normally collected in several intakes at each mine. The laboratory analysis procedures included acid leaching of the sample to remove the limestone rock dust, sonic sieving to determine the dust size, and low temperature ashing of the sieved fractions to correct for any remaining incombustible matter. The results indicate that particle sizes of mine coal dust in intake airways are finer than those measured in the 1920’s. The significance of these finer coal dust sizes is discussed relevant to the amount of rock dust required to prevent coal dust explosions.

"Three types of respiratory apparatus namely, gas masks, hose masks, and self-contained oxygen-breathing apparatus - are now commonly used for protection from noxious gases, vapors, and smokes or ristes, but no particular type can be selected as best for all conditions. Many factors must be considered in connection with each situation, so that each must be considered as a problem in itself. Following are concise statements for comparing the types:Gas masks are the simplest and easiest to wear, also the least cumber-sore; but they protect only in comparatively low concentrations of noxious gases and should never be used where the air contains less than 16 per cent of oxygen. Special masks give protection from one gas or class of gases, but may give no protection against another gas or class of gases.Hose masks protect in any irrespirable atmosphere, but are somewhat cumbersome, the length of hose limiting the distance a wearer may go from fresh air. They are serviceable also where a supply of pure air moves with the wearer, as where a locomotive engineer in a smoky tunnel is using a hose mask supplied with air from the compressed air line of the locomotive. Hose masks consume no chemicals or materials and so are not limited in the time they may be used.Self-contained oxygen-breathing apparatus protect in any irrespirable atmosphere, but their weight is cumbersome, they can be used only by trained men, and frequent attention must be given them to maintain good working condition. On the other band they are the only safe means for exploring mines and other places filled with irrespirable gases in high concentrations."

The hazard to health from contamination of air by a noxious gas depends not only on the potential harmful response attending exposure., but also on the warning properties, which in effect may be termed the "accompanying warning response," This warning may be manifested as an odor, taste, irritation of the eyes, nose, or throat, or perhaps headache, vertigo,, or nausea. These manifestations may be painful and even slightly harmful, but to a much lesser degree than the primary injury of exposure. The warning response mitigates hazards directly in proportion to the degree of intolerability which -accompanies injurious exposure, and accordingly its absence augments hazards. This accounts for the fact that the actual health hazards from a nonodorous or non-irritating gas or vapor of comparatively low toxicity sometimes equal or exceed the hazard from a considerably more toxic substance, but one which possesses a marked odor or produces eye, nose, or throat irritation in advance of harmful exposure. When a substance lacks the properties for giving warning, it is often possible to impart them by the addition of a small amount of another substance which has an exceedingly high warning intensity. The vapors of this substance, commonly termed a "warning agent" or "tracer gas," escape and mingle with the gas or vapor which lacks warning properties and thereby apprises persons of the latter's presence. The amount of the warning agent added is that which will give adequate warning in advance of serious physiological harm from the dangerous gas or vapor.

Reduce the noise levels to which operators of double-drum longwall shearers are exposed without compromising the operational effectiveness of the shearer. The Problem Noise produced by double-drum longwall shearers can be harmful to machine operators. Typical noise levels at the lead-drum operator position range from 100 to 105 dBA, and Federal noise regulations allow only one to two hours of exposure per shift at these levels. Noise radiated by the shearer cutting drum is the primary contributor to the overall noise level. However, test of a noise-controlled cutting drum developed by the Bureau of Mines reduced the operator noise level to 95 dBA, thereby increasing the allowable operating time to four hours per shift. Approach The key design aspect of the noise-controlled shearer drum is its reduced vibration-al response to coal-cutting forces. Laboratory studies have shown that these forces are concentrated in the low-frequency region (500 Hz and below). Mr. Bockosh is an electrical engineer with the U.S. Bureau of Mines In Pittsburgh, and has devoted the last two years to research on underground illumination. He formerly was a mine maintenance foreman and worked two years underground. He is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, where he is now working toward his masters degree in mining. When Congress first legislated light in American coal mines, it was a little like mandating a walk on the moon before the first satellite had been put in orbit. It was never a question, of course, of whether it could be done. But no one knew quite how. It's one thing to string a few light bulbs, and quite something else to provide uniform, sufficient, safe and reliable illumination, with fixtures that will hold up under some of the toughest conditions in the world - in the life-and-death circumstances of a craggy, black cavern filled with dangerous, moving machinery. In fact, in 1969 when Congress originally mandated illumination standards for the work places of underground coal mines, no one even knew just how much light was needed. That question was answered within a year by the National Bureau of Standards. In a study commissioned by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the Bureau of Standards determined that underground mine should be illuminated with a light intensity of 0.06 foot-lamberts, a measurement of light reflected from surfaces in the lighted area-as opposed to foot-candles, a measurement of light from the source of illumination-in order for miners to adequately see what they are doing. That study was followed by more detailed research done at the Bureau of Mines' direction by the Research and Development Department of the Naval Ammunition Depot in Crane, Ind. This work evaluated the specific lighting needs of miners engaged In more than 100 different job tasks in all three types of coal mining- conventional, continuous and longwall. The Naval Depot report brought forth nearly 300 pages of detailed lighting data and concluded that proper illumination of mine work areas would serve more than just the cause of mine safety.
