Mine management by objectives By A. A. HAZELL The author discusses the objective areas of mine management. Setting objectives is seen to be a conscious process which starts at the highest level of management. This enables clear objectives to be set at each lower management level. The methods of setting objectives in the areas of stope production, productivity and manager performance are set out in detail. In the area of manager performance emphasis must be placed on the practice of management. It is concluded from results obtained that "management by objectives" produces better than average perormances.

Surface treatments like laser shock peening (LSP) induce residual stresses penetrating up to 1 mm deep, surpassing traditional methods, thus significantly increasing the potential impact on materials prevalent in the automotive and aerospace sectors. Through extensive fatigue testing and fractography investigations, it was determined that LSP resulted in a fatigue life increase of over five times for aluminium alloy AA7075-T6 and titanium Ti-6Al-4V. Increased fatigue life was also noted in AISI316 stainless steel, which showed increases in fatigue life of 1.7x. While fatigue life in all cases improved, the efficacy of LSP was shown to be material dependent.

This study examined an alternative technique of extracting tungsten from wolframite ore using a fusion method with ammonium phosphate salt. Current techniques use alkali salts to decompose tungsten ores and use various purification methods to produce ammonium paratungstate, which is a key intermediate precursor in the extraction of tungsten. In this study, a two-step extraction process, which involves thermal decomposition of the ore using fusion and a separation stage, is examined. The novelty of this technique is the ability to completely decompose wolframite ore and form an unstable tungsten oxide phosphate (WO2(PO3)2) compound. The instability of WO2(PO3)2 in deionized water enables selective isolation of tungsten as insoluble precipitates of WO3 and WO2. The decomposition reaction of WO2(PO3)2 is influenced by the presence of oxygen and determined to be first order under ambient conditions. Scanning electron micrographs and X-ray diffraction analysis showed above 80% of the tungsten precipitated compared with the amount that remained in the filtrate solution.

Deposits of copper-porphyry type occupy a leading position in the mineral resource base of the world copper industry. They are characterized by large and gigantic scales, often complex composition, their development is carried out in an open way. The raw material base of the Russian copper industry is mainly sulfide copper-Nickel and copper-pyrite ores. Exploration of copper-porphyry deposits and the creation of long-term large mining facilities on their basis is one of the most promising and priority tasks for the Russian industry. This task is especially acute for the copper enterprises of the Urals in connection with the depletion of copper - pyrite ore reserves. In recent years, Russia has carried out a large complex of studies on the composition and technology of processing of copper-porphyry ores of different subtypes. In this work the complex poor copper-molybdenum-gold ore of one of the deposits is investigated. The chemical and mineral composition of the ore containing 0.49% copper, 0.020% molybdenum, 0.39 g/t gold, 5.85 g/t silver was determined. The forms of finding metals and their distribution by size classes are established. The dependence of extraction of metals into concentrates of collective-selective flotation on the size of ore grinding, pH of the medium, reagent consumption is shown. Under optimal flotation conditions, copper concentrate with 18.6% copper content and 92.32% extraction and molybdenum concentrate with 21.5% molybdenum content and 73.4% extraction were obtained. With a high concentration of molybdenum in selective flotation products, it is possible to conclude about the expected molybdenum concentrate with a content of 45% and a recovery of 70%. The associated extraction of gold and silver into copper concentrate is 76.8 % and 73.4%. Keywords: Collective-selective flotation, copper, molybdenum, porphyry ore, grinding, pH, reagents

The use of heavy-medium separation in the processing of iron ores by H. C. VOGES. B.Sc. (Visitor) The paper discusses various aspects of the application of heavy-medium separation to the processing of hematite ore at Sishen and Thabazimbi. The two main factors to be borne in mind in the design of a plant for such beneficiation are the Iow unit value of the iron ore produced and the high separation densities required. The four factors of importance in the avoidance of high viscosity in the ferrosilicon medium are discussed in turn.

Mechanical alloying of an equiatomic mixture of crystalline Ti and Pt elemental powders in a high-energy ball mill formed an amorphous alloy by solid-state reactions. Mechanical alloying was carried out in an argon atmosphere at a rotation speed of 1200 r/min and a 20:1 ball-to-powder weight ratio, for time intervals of 4 to 40 hours. At an intermediate stage of mechanical alloying, scanning electron microscopy showed the formation of characteristic layered structures of inhomogeneous composition within the powder particles. X-ray diffraction analysis showed the gradual disappearance of crystalline Bragg peaks and the emergence of broad amorphous maxima as milling progressed. The amorphization process was completed after 8?12 hours. The amorphous state of the product indicated that temperatures during processing did not exceed the crystallization temperature of the alloy.

South Africa holds approximately 70% of the world’s total chrome reserves. Chromium is an important raw material for the production of stainless steel and ferrochrome alloys. Over the years, China’s ferrochrome market has been dependent on chrome ore imports from South Africa. In 2018, China imported about 75% of its chrome ore from South Africa. With the low platinum price and the rising demand for stainless steel, a growing demand to evaluate new beneficiation technologies for fine chromite was identified. Gravity separation of fine chromite (<75 μm) is inefficient, due to the limitations of the technology to upgrade fine particle size distributions. Potential for the recovery of chromite, specifically fines (<75μm), lost to UG2 PGM flotation tails, but also from MG and LG6 spiral circuit tailings exist. Flotation of podiform chromite ores from India and Kazhkhstan is successful in generating saleable product grade, following acid or alkaline flotation routes. Application to South African stratiform chromite is being evaluated, with the emphasis on evaluating reagent type, optimising dosages and the effect of pH in optimising flotation performance. Flotation can unlock additional value from chromite tailings material. The effect of ore characteristics such as gangue mineralogy, particle size distribution and headgrade are reported. The performance in terms of product quality and yield are evaluated and compared. The impact of this paper will not only prolong life of mine and increase revenue but will also alleviate environmental burdens associated with tailings dams. Since 1987, this meeting has been held under the auspices of the Western Cape Branch of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and has enjoyed much national and international support. In 1993, in place of the usual Symposium, the Branch and Universities collaborated with CSM Associates Ltd and Minerals Engineering Journal is organizing the international Minerals Engineering &apos;93 Conference in Cape Town.

"SynopsisFluorine – in the form of hydrofluoric acid, anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, elemental gaseous fluorine, fluoropolymers, volatile inorganic fluorides, and more – has played, and still plays, a major role in the nuclear industry. In order to enrich uranium, the metal has to be in the gaseous state. While more exotic methods are known, the standard and most cost-competitive way of achieving this is by means of uranium hexafluoride (UF6). This compound sublimates at low temperatures, and the vapour is enriched using centrifugal processes. The industrial preparation of uranium hexafluoride requires both elemental fluorine gas and anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (HF). HF is prepared by the reaction of sulphuric acid with fluorspar (CaF2). Fluorine gas in turn is prepared by the electrolysis of HF. Yellowcake is first converted to uranium tetrafluoride (UF4), using HF, after which the compound is treated with fluorine to yield UF6. After enrichment, the UF6 is reduced to UO2 for use in fuel elements in pellet form.South Africa has the largest reserves of fluorspar internationally, and is the third largest producer after Mexico and China. Fluorine technology has many associated difficulties, because of the reactivity of fluorine and the toxicity of HF. The main barriers to entry into the fluorochemical industry are thus the abilities to produce both HF and F2. Both these substances are produced locally, at the industrial scale, at Pelchem SOC Ltd. Should South Africa contemplate developing its own nuclear fuel cycle as part of the awaited new-build nuclear project, it will be imperative to leverage the existing skills with respect to fluorine technology, resident at both Pelchem and Necsa, for this purpose. This paper summarizes the fluorochemical skills developed locally over the past several decades, and suggests strategies for maintaining the technology base and developing it for the next generation of scientists and engineers.IntroductionFluorine chemistry has always had a very close relationship with the nuclear industry. Although the first mention of fluorspar was recorded in the sixteenth century, and the fundamentals had been well-developed by the Second World War, it was only during the Manhattan Project (Banks et al., 1994), when almost unlimited funds were made available for the large-scale industrialization of fluorine and related compounds, that the technology took off. Expertise in both the chemistry and the engineering aspects of fluorine is essential for the design and running of several of the unit processes in the nuclear fuel cycle."

"In previous work by the authors, it was established that additions of 0.2 at.% Ru to an Fe-40 at.% Al alloy improved the corrosion and oxidation resistance of the alloy. The alloy was produced by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering and the work showed that nonequilibrium processing was able to significantly refine the grain size of the material. The sintered material had a higher hardness than the as-cast material and the change in grain size did not significantly affect the oxidation and corrosion. In the present research, the mechanically alloyed powder was coated onto a mild steel substrate using cold-spray coating at a gas pressure of 10 bar and a temperature of 500°C. The coatings were found to be 5–10 um thick, although thicknesses of up to 30 um were observed. The coated materials were subjected to oxidation and corrosion tests to determine the effectiveness of the coating in increasing the oxidation and corrosion resistance of mild steel. This was done to determine the effectiveness of cold-spray coating as a technique to coat these mechanically alloyed powders. IntroductionPrevious work conducted by Mintek (Couperthwaite et al., 2013, 2015) investigated the effect of precious metal additions on the structure, oxidation and corrosion properties of an Fe-40 at.% Al (Fe- Al) alloy. Initial work determined that additions of more than 0.5 at.% precious metal did not improve the oxidation and corrosion properties of the materials and in some cases even decreased the resistance to corrosion. Further work identified Pt and Ru as beneficial additions to the FeAl alloy. Four alloys were then produced by mechanical alloying and sintering (FeAl–0.2 at.% Pd, FeAl–0.2 at.% Ru, FeAl–0.5 at.% Ag, FeAl–0.5 at.% Pt). These alloys were all successfully produced by melting and casting and mechanical alloying sintering and it was found that the nonequilibrium processing greatly decreased the grain size of the materials compared to the ascast materials. It was found that the additions of Ru and Pt were still the most beneficial to the oxidation and corrosion properties, with Ru being considered the most beneficial."

Anionic surfactants, such as oleic acid and sodium oleate (OLE), and cationic surfactants, such as dodecyl amine-hydrochloride (DDA), are used as flotation collectors of spodumene. However, recovery is poor even if activating ions are used because gangue minerals are also activated. Some reports demonstrate that OLE/DDA mixtures act as a selective collector to enhance spodumene recovery. From mostly macroscopic tests, it has been argued that anionic OLE and cationic DDA form electroneutral complexes, which are adsorbed on the mineral surface through chemisorption; however, no molecular evidence has been presented. Therefore, the adsorption mechanisms of the collector mixtures remain mostly unknown. It seems necessary to first study the behaviour of these surfactants confined in salt solutions, to determine auto-associations when they are pure and cross-associations when mixed, the transition from monomers to micelles, and the structure of the micelles and the effects of pH, temperature and concentration. In this paper, ab initio calculations are first used to determine the surface charge distribution of OLE and DDA separately. Then molecular dynamics simulations are used to determine the conformation, aggregation, and diffusion of these pure and mixed surfactants in freshwater and saltwater with the ionic strength of seawater in a pH range. In particular, it is interesting to determine the various associations that result in mixtures of both surfactants and the impact of alkali and alkaline earth metal cations on the structures formedp. Cations influence the order of the structure and orientation of water dipoles, reducing the mobility of water, ions, and surfactant molecules. Short-term plans must meet the long-term goals while accounting for shovel selectivity, operational space, and scheduling restrictions. There are several approaches that deal with these issues to deliver a feasible short-term schedule. This paper compares two approaches based on mathematical programming to address the short-term mining cut definition and scheduling in an integrated way. They work by scheduling extraction to comply with long-term production goals, but they differ in how mining cuts are modelled. The first approach schedules Selective Mining Units (SMUs) but aggregates them around predefined locations. The second approach does not work on SMUs; it decides directly what mining cuts are to be used from a pre-defined set of shapes. It assigns a destination and schedules the extraction for the selected mining cuts. We applied both approaches in a real case study to compare their results in terms of profit, mining cut design, expertise needed, profit, and optimisation performance.

Oebswana&apos;s Jwaneng Mine (south-central Botswana) is the richest diamond mine? in the world and has been contributing substantial revenue to Botswana since the mine started operating in 1982. The resource consists of 3 separate volcanic pipes/vents namely North, South and Centre pipes (2 additional small kimberlite bodies have also been intersected within the mining pit) which erupted through Transvaal strata and the overlying Karoo sediments -245 million years ago. Although earlier drilling and geophysical surveys suggest that the 3 pipes extend to depths greater than 1 km below the surface, the resource is only at an indicated level of confidence to a depth of 400m, and mining activities will start exploiting the inferred resource material below 400m in 2014.

Interest in early gangue rejection has grown substantially in the minerals industry to reduce energy and water consumption arising from excessive comminution. Recent developments in coarse-particle flotation have proven successful by promoting a quiescent hydrodynamic environment to limit particlebubble detachment and by helping to convey more buoyant particles to the overflow. Current approaches also benefit from upstream classification to remove the finer particles ahead of the coarse-particle flotation. In this study, coarse-particle flotation was investigated experimentally using a novel hybrid gravity-flotation system called CoarseAIR™ that exploits the hydrodynamic advantages of the Reflux® Classifier. The system consists of a lower fluidised bed housing, with a system of inclined channels above. The inclined channels enhance the segregation and hence rejection of intermediate through to relatively coarse particles containing little or no surface liberation. This approach overcomes the need for pre-classification, while offering strong transport of coarse particles made buoyant through their attachment to air bubbles. The paper explores the strong relationship between the solids transport to the overflow and the input gas flux, showing firstly the potential for significant mass rejection at the relatively low gas fluxes, and robust performance in terms of recovery across the full range of gas fluxes. The South African mining industry has committed to achieving a state of zero harm for its workforce, with a strong emphasis on worker health and safety. Among the major safety concerns are falls of ground, a leading cause of injuries and fatalities. Ground-penetrating radar, a non-destructive geophysical method, is recognised for its ability to image structures, fractures, and geological features within the rock mass. However, ground penetrating radar data is often acquired in local coordinates, posing challenges for visualisation in mine computer-aided design or three-dimensional visualisation software. This study explores the pivotal role of light detection and ranging data in transforming ground penetrating radar data from local survey coordinates to absolute mine coordinates. A comprehensive georeferencing methodology is presented, providing the stepwise progression from the initial georeferencing of ground penetrating radar data to the ultimate integration of ground penetrating radar and light detection and ranging datasets, resulting in the creation of a ground penetrating radar-light detection and ranging three-dimensional model. The proposed approach not only facilitates the integration of but also offers a practical means of visualising the integrated datasets within commonly used computer-aided design or three-dimensional visualisation software. An essential aspect of this integration is the adoption of non-proprietary data formats, specifically American Standard Code for Information Interchange text files, ensuring broader accessibility and compatibility. The potential for integrating diverse datasets to construct insightful models of the underground mining environment is illustrated. Integration of different datasets has the potential to offer a holistic understanding of the mining environment, providing essential information to decision-makers.

Atomaer (Pty) Ltd is a technology-driven company with interests in Western Australian nickel. Atomaer (RSA) Pty Ltd is a process technology company operating in Southern Africa. It is a subsidiary of Atomaer Holdings Pty Limited (Atomaer), which has operating companies in Australia, Africa, South America, and Europe. In addition, Atomaer has substantial shareholdings in Braemore Resources Plc, a nickel company with interests in sulphide nickel projects in Western Australia and Southern Africa listed on the Alternative Investment Market of London Stock Exchange (AIM); Mintails Limited, a gold company with interests in gold operations in South Africa listed on the Australia Stock Exchange; and Brinkley Mining Plc, a uranium company with interests in Southern Africa listed on the AIM. Independence Platinum Limited (IPt) has been formed by Atomaer to undertake the commercial development and exploitation of Mintek&apos;s ConRoast technology with the strategic objective of providing independent smelting and refining facilities with lower capital and operating costs for the treatment and processing of platinum concentrates, including those with high chrome and/or nickel and/or low platinum group metal values, for the development of platinum projects by junior resource companies in South Africa. The platinum mines of South Africa have traditionally exploited the Merensky Reef of the Bushveld Complex for platinum production. However, the mining of this reef is reaching depths that require significant vertical shaft systems and costly refrigeration for access to the ore bodies at deeper levels. In the past decade, all of the platinum producers have begun to mine the UG2 reef because of its cheaper mining costs. UG2 ore usually has lower platinum group metal contents and higher chrome values. The new junior resource companies have gained access primarily to UG2 reefs. Consequently, platinum mining is becoming more UG2-based and the resulting concentrates contain high levels of chromitite. UG2 concentrates are difficult to smelt in the current six-in-line submerged arc furnaces, and this leads to increased capital and operating costs for those smelting operations. The platinum mines of South Africa produce the majority of the world&apos;s platinum metal used in automotive catalysts and jewellery. As the platinum market is forecast to grow at a healthy rate into the future, the SA producers Anglo Platinum, Impala, Lonmin, and Northam are planning to expand mining operations in the next decade. Furthermore, a number of smaller new producers who are accessing other mineral resources are entering the buoyant market and will produce platinum concentrates for purchase or toll treatment. Hence, a shortage in both smelting and refining capacities is anticipated. Further smelting and refining facilities independent of the major platinum producers will be required in South Africa by 2010. Mintek&apos;s ConRoast technology is best suited to fill the need to treat a high proportion of UG2 concentrates in a cost-effective and technically efficient manner. Atomaer base metals technology has been developed for rapid leaching of nickel and other base metals from alloy. Significant reductions in capital and operating costs are expected from the combination of the two advances in process technology compared with that installed at the existing smelters and refineries that were established over 20 years ago. Independence Platinum will be listed on AIM and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in 2007, and developed as an independent, vertically-integrated platinum company using its independent smelting and base metals refining facilities as a strategic platform to promote the development and mining of platinum projects by junior resource companies in South Africa through technical co-operation, strategic alliances, joint ventures, off-take, toll-refining, and marketing agreements.

Yeast-derived bola-amphiphiles have attracted considerable attention for their applications in various industrial sectors in recent years. However, only a few studies on this class of surfactant were reported to be relevant to mineral processing applications. In this paper, one of the novel surfactants, acidic glucolipid obtained from Candida bombicola sophorolipids and modified by using Penicillium decumbens naringinase substrate has been evaluated for its interaction with chalcocite and calcite minerals because of a new Cu-ore Nussir deposit in Norway containing calcite impurity. The interaction of glucolipid biosurfactant with copper sulphide and carbonate minerals was investigated with zeta potential, adsorption and FTIR studies, and also by Hallimond tube and bench scale flotation tests using pure minerals and Nussir copper ore, respectively. The results illustrate collector adsorption and flotation of copper sulfides at neutral pH. The bench-scale flotation results demonstrate that copper sulphides can be selectively floated from carbonate and silicate gangue minerals. This study underlines the glycolipid’s high potential for its use as collector for flotation of valuable copper sulphide minerals. Keywords: Flotation, biosurfactants, adsorption
