"The adoption of tunneled combined sewerage interceptors and outfalls leads to design linings which are often subject to internal pressures that are larger than the external pressures, resulting in significant tension loads. The need to meet stringent durability conditions for the normal design life of 100 years often drives client specifications to require a double pass solution with a cast in situ secondary concrete lining. However, improvements in concrete technology and the need to seek efficiency in terms of time and costs, have driven designers to consider single pass segmental linings. The Riachuelo Sanitation project in Buenos Aires is subject to these constraints both upstream and downstream of a sewage treatment plant. This paper describes how the challenges of up to 2 bar pressure differential have been addressed by careful analysis of soil structure interaction to ensure that the full benefit of external ground pressure is realized, resulting in a more optimal design for the constructor both in terms of cost and time. INTRODUCTION The construction of long sewerage interceptors and outfalls is becoming an increasingly common piece of infrastructure for modern urban cities facing a large water front and estuarine conditions, which are under a significant environmental burden imposed by decades of sustained growth. Such works intercept most of the distributed sewage discharges to then divert them to a central treatment point from which it will be finally diffused via an outfall into a water body capable to accept these discharges under acceptable environmental conditions. Depending on the magnitude of the sewage load to be handled, the configuration of the urban environment and the conditions of the receiving water body, both in terms of oceanography forces and seabed conditions, these schemes will vary in length, conveyance capacity and design and construction requirements. When conditions permit, the current trend is the execution of long outfalls using flexible solutions (such as the use of HDPE pipes) which usually require some form of concrete ballasted weights to resist off shore dynamic forces when directly laid over the sea bed. However, this concept faces limitations when the conveyance requirements indicate the need for large diameters (typically above 3000 m) and also when the outfall needs to avoid deep features off shore such as navigation channels. When this occurs, tunneling, particularly segmentally lined tunnel constructed by TBM emerges as the most feasible approach for large diameter, long deep outfalls. The operating conditions often result in internal pressures that are larger than the external pressures, resulting in significant tension loads in the lining. The known high grade mineral re- sources in the United States are fast becoming exhausted; viable new deposits are more difficult to find and more expensive to develop; operating and capital costs have increased to meet more stringent regulatory standards. By contrast, international producers enjoy a cost advantage as a result of higher mining grades, improving technological competence, and more favorable government support. The domestic base minerals industry is finding it more and more difficult to compete in world markets. It has become essentially a marginal industry today. The current philosophy of taxation in the United States has evolved over the past century. The structure of the taxing system is based on the assumption that a firm must be able to pay its tax imposts out of profits. In principle, firms incapable of supporting the tax load should be replaced by others that can do so. This philosophy applies equally well to the mining industry, so long as it remains economically healthy. However, mineral resources are finite. The situation in the domestic base mineral industry has changed fundamentally in recent times. For the reasons given above, much of the industry now cannot continue to compete profitably in the open world market; and there are no known alternative domes- tic mineral resources more capable of doing so. Under these circumstances it is important to consider the effect of taxation not only on profitability, but also on survivability.

Likewise, the explorationist's charge is to find more gold in a more cost-efficient manner. That means using new technology to find new gold deposits and expand present ones. More accurate mapping instruments are available to geologists in the search for new deposits. Advanced geophysical and geochemical methods enable explo¬ration teams to review previously mined districts in their search for minable reserves. Four technical sessions on the geology, exploration, and development of gold deposits were part of the program at `world Gold '89,' a Gold Forum on Technology and Practices," held by SME and The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in Reno, NV, Nov. 5-8, 1989.

The vast coal resources of North Slope, Alaska, can be expected to attract substantial interest because the nearly flat-lying coal beds of the coastal plain are specially amenable to surface mining. Mining on a scale large enough to justify coal development in this area could have severe environmental effects. The mitigation would be uncertain because large-scale coal mining and reclamation operations have not been carried out in the arctic. The deficiency of the scientific data base is another factor that requires consideration if coal mining has to develop in accordance with the objectives of PL 95-87. The objective of this paper is to establish the inter-relationship between the problems due to permafrost and factors in reclamation of post-mining land in order to find ways to transform nature in a rational and purposeful manner and to suggest specific reclamation approaches that may be appropriate in this region.

The aim of this paper is the study of the pollution of soils in greenhouses because of the use of pesticides. The degree of pollution was studied in relation with the mineralogical and pedologic properties of the soil. The study was con-ducted in the region of Kountoura, Palaiochora, situated in the south of the prefecture of Hania/Greece. Several samples of soil, originated from 4 greenhouses were analyzed. 5 pesticides with organic drastic compounds were chosen for analytical determination using GC-MS from 18 which were applied in total during the period of sampling. It was concluded that the adsorption of pesticides in the soil of greenhouses is connected with the percentage of the clay fraction and the content of organic carbon.

Unsaturated permeability and flow capacity exist where copper mineralization is disseminated in segmented, very-low-permeability ore blocks. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) investigated this condition for application to in situ, copper-leach mining at the Cyprus Casa Grande mine site. Moisture retention properties are derived and combined with scanning-electron-microprobe data to characterize the host rock's mineralogy, texture, pore size, distribution and permeability. Finite element modeling is used to estimate saturated permeability and the ambient degree of saturation and to gain insight into appropriate in situ leach design. Recommended design modifications for optimized solution distribution and maximum recovery from the Casa Grande ore require: • well pressure injection exceeding 1500 psi and recovery wells operating in a suction mode, or • secondary, permeability enhancement by explosive rubblization. In the former, the lack of conditioning and the use of lesser pressures will result in leach solutions confined to the macrofractures. With the latter requirement, pressures can be reduced to 500 psi, with improved recovery and solutions containment.

We report measurements of the effects of rank, type, and grade of coal on grinding energy and grinding media consumption in a Pitt Mill. The rank of coal has a greater effect on grinding energy than does coal type. The effect of coal grade on grinding energy depends upon the relative grindability of the mineral matter and of the hydrocarbon components of the coal. The mineral matter is primarily responsible for abrasive media wear in a Pitt Mill. The widely recognized HGI test for coal breakage may yield misleading results, particularly for multiple-banded bright and dull coal where the screening procedure used in sample preparation favors the testing of the hardest coal fraction. The work reported here indicates that the Pitt Mill, which grinds the whole coal in a single stage and which yields easily interpreted results, is an excellent candidate for testing coal pulverization characteristics including energy requirements and equipment wear. The measurements of the effects of coal characteristics on grinding energy and on media consumption have been used to estimate the cost of fine grinding in a Pitt Mill. The results, based on a conceptual level evaluation of grinding at the rate of 1 TPH, show that there are trade-offs possible between the cost of energy and cost of media consumption which involve choice of grinding media size. The use of fine-size grinding media to lower grinding energy and to increase throughput can be deceptive because the total cost of grinding must consider both energy and media consumption.

Inco Limited operates nine underground mines on the rim of the Sudbury Basin. These operations are situated near the City of Sudbury, 589 km (365 miles) west of Montreal, and 363 km (225 miles) north of Toronto. The ores are mined primarily for nickel and copper, and the principal minerals are pentlandite, chalcopyrite, and pyrrhotite. Total ore production from underground is in excess of 51,000 tons per day. The total volume of fresh air supplied to the nine mines is six million cubic feet per minute. There are 50 main fans in operation at these mines, powered by electric motors totalling 11,200 kw (15,000 hp). The trend in metal mining during recent years towards mechanization and high-tonnage production methods has greatly increased ventilation requirements. The flow of air must quickly dilute and carry away diesel exhaust fumes, dust created by mining operations, and the fumes of the explosives used in blasting. Mechanical ventilation is required to obtain the necessary volume and control, as natural ventilation pressures alone are, for the most part, inadequate and unreliable. In the event of a mine fire or other needs, close control of ventilation is essential. There are two unique heating systems presently in operation at Inco: Creighton Natural Heat Ex- changer and Stobie Ice Stopes.

Experiences gained using computers in the mining and geological environment have shown that it is quite rare for a system or the data it stores to be truly stand alone. Just as the mining enterprise aims to have a smooth integration of operations from exploration through mining and extraction to sales, so it should develop all its information systems within an overall framework or architecture which covers the applications and data as well as the computer hardware and communications. This paper discusses methods of achieving such an architecture, and describes some of the benefits it can have on the development and implementation of information systems. The key aspects are the identification of the business functions and the data that they use, and ensuring that the IS plan supports the overall objectives of the enterprise. Hardware and communications policies should be based on the plans for the applications and data, rather than the reverse.

The stability of pillars in old mined-out districts is greatly dependent on the weathering action caused by moisture penetration into the pillar structure. Field observations in old mining districts indicated that this weathering action becomes critical in terms of the stability of the pillar if the coal seam contains parting or binder (layers of claystone or mudstone). The weathering action caused by moisture penetration over a long period of time degrades both parting and coal. However, it has been observed that the structural deterioration is more severe in parting. Moisture-penetration rates in parting and coal are different. The extent of the weathered zone in various layers of the pillar is primarily time dependent. This paper investigates, both in the laboratory and in the field, the effects of weathering action on coal and parting. In the laboratory, slake durability indices and uniaxial compressive strength tests for dry and saturated specimens are compared for coal. In the field, the in situ strength profiles for coal and parting layers are obtained, and the effect of time (in terms of the pillar age) on the strength profiles is studied An attempt was also made to establish formulae for time-dependent strengths of coal and parting.

To reduce their sulfur emissions, many coal-fired electric power plants use wet flue-gas scrubbers. These scrubbers convert sulfur oxides into solid sulfate and sulfite sludge, which must then be disposed of. Currently, the major markets for scrubber sludge are for manufacture of gypsum products, such as wallboard and plaster, and for cement. However, the quality of the raw sludge is often not high enough or consistent enough to satisfy manufacturers, and so the material is difficult to sell. Other markets, such as paper manufacture and plastics fillers, have even more stringent quality requirements and will not accept raw sludge at all. In the work described in this paper, several reagents have been examined to determine their ability to selectively improve the flotation of the unreacted limestone contaminant away from the desirable products (calcium sulfite and gypsum). The most success has been achieved using a cationic collector, which shows a higher selectivity between calcium sulfite and calcium carbonate than do the anionic collectors that were studied.

The exchange of heat from wall rock to ventilating air was studied in a cross-cut driven through fresh rock on the 4600 level of the Kelley Mine, Six- teen thermocouple probes, 10 inches long, twenty-three probes, 7 feet long, and five probes, 50 feet long, were emplaced in the walls soon after blasting and wall -rock temperatures were monitored intermittently over a two-year period to determine heat loss from the wall rock. Temperatures, humidity, and velocity measurements were made of the air at the same times to determine heat gain. An important but less well-defined variable was the heat transfer by water entering the crosscut from fractures and leaving in the ditch. The balance of heat in and heat out at each probe station is within an acceptable range. Theoretical and empirical models for heat flux into a cylindrical opening fit the data reasonably well, also.

The Blind Springs Hill pumice beds are located 5 miles southwest of Benton, California in the foothills between the Benton Mountain Range and Blind Springs Valley. The best exposures of the pumice are in an area 0.75 miles west of Blind Springs Hill. The pumice is Quaternary ejecta material which came from the rhyolitic volcanoes in the Glass Mountain-Volcanic Tablelands area of Mono County. The pumice beds occur in two distinct layers separated by an unconformity. The upper layer is 0 to 11 feet thick and consists of coarse subangular pumice fragments, some of which are over 1.75 inches in diameter. The lower bed is medium to coarse grained with subangular fragments up to 1.0 inch. The lower bed is 0 to 9 feet thick. Overburden at the Blind Springs Hill deposit varies from 0 to 15 feet. There are approximately 1 million cubic yards of material in the deposit that can be mined. The size distribution in the deposit is mostly fine with only 10.6% of the pumice fragments being over 0.5 inch in diameter, the minimum size needed for stone-wash or acid-wash applications. Suitability of pumice for the textile industry is quantified by standard 15-minute abrasion and absorption tests. In the Blind Springs Hill deposit, the plus 0.5 inch fraction has an abrasion loss of 33% which is too high for stone-wash application but it has an absorption capacity of 36% which makes it suitable for acid-wash applications in the textile industry. The abrasion and absorption properties of this deposit are within the range of those which have been measured for other pumice deposits within the United States.

In the UK a high proportion of land-won sand and gravel is extracted from sub-alluvial gravels and river terrace gravels located within river valleys. However, extraction from deposits of this type is increasingly proving to be less acceptable. Quarries within river valleys often have a high visual impact and the cumulative impact of these operations in close proximity to each other can be high (figure 1). River valley operations are almost always restored to open water. Whilst these may be attractive for nature conservation and provide leisure activities, they can also have a serious impact on the natural hydrology of the flood plain. Wet restoration of quarries located close to airports or airfields can also lead to concerns regarding increased risk of bird strike on aircraft. The Civil Aviation Authority recently suggested that an exclusion zone of 13 km be applied around all airports and airfields to reduce the potential for bird strikes on aircraft. This action is likely to have a serious impact on the availability of potential sand and gravel extraction sites in river valleys.

The Hilton Concentrator treats a laminated stratiform silver- lead-zinc ore to produce separate lead, zinc and bulk concentrates. Commissioning commenced in December 1989. Grinding circuit performance is above design with a mean flotation feed sizing of 80% passing 65 microns at 800 000 tonnes / year throughput. Grinding is done in two stages with an open circuit low diameter : length ratio SAG mill followed by a closed circuit ball mill. SAG mill control philosophy is to maintain a fixed feedrate for stability of flotation and to control mill charge weight to a setpoint with feed water. It is planned to increase throughput to 1 million tones / year in the second half of 1991. Proposed milling circuit modifications include close circuiting the SAG mill by recycling a portion of the ball mill cyclone underflow, increasing the SAG mill speed from 73% to 79% of critical and offloading of lower than feed grade -20mm /+7mm SAG mill ore scats. This paper will describe current mill operating practice with operating data and key mill developments since the beginning of operations.
