This paper introduces a computer simulation that extends the use of microcomputer systems for mine ventilation planning. The program was developed as part of an ongoing study to produce a simulation model that would determine the optimum duties of a main fan and a booster fan without requiring the trial-and-error runs that are necessary with currently available programs. To use the new program, the user specifies the location of one main fan and one booster fan, and the minimum required airflows in any number of working places. The computer determines the fan duties that will maintain the required airflows at the lowest operating costs without causing undesired recirculation. The methodology of the program and an example showing how it can be applied are presented.

The Grossschloppen vein-uranium deposit, Bavaria, West Germany, was examined with underground workings during 1980-82 by Esso Erz GmbH, an affiliate of Exxon Minerals Company (EMC). Geologic evaluation entailed dense drilling of a portion of the deposit from workings constructed specifically for the program. Discovered in 1977, the deposit was initially explored by surface diamond drillholes which allowed definition of a 30-60 m wide vein system discontinuously mineralized along a 1000 m strike length and to at least a 450 m depth. The underground program was conceived as a cost-effective procedure to answer questions on vein correlation, grade continuity and variability. A 1200 m decline allowed access for detailed sampling of approximately 10% of the known area of mineralization. Fanned drillholes, logged by gamma probe, were spaced to provide intersections of veins at 10 to 20 m intervals. Six cross-cuts also penetrate the pitchblende and uranophane mineralization which occurs in 0.1 to 2.5 m thick quartz veins. Detailed cross-sections and level plans were constructed for resource estimates of the intensively studied portion of the vein system. The program resulted in the discovery of local, high grade areas and an average grade in the evaluated area nearly double that expected from surface drilling.

The Melbourne City Link project includes two three-lane highway tunnels, 1.6 and 3.4km long, respectively, which are both approximately 16 meters wide and 9 meters high. The tunnels will be excavated through interbedded, moderately to highly jointed siltstones and sandstones of the Silurian Age Melbourne Mudstone formation over the major parts of their lengths. The strength of the intact rock varies from less than 5 MPa to greater than 70 MPa. Based on the available information regarding the performance of large span tunnels in weak rock, it was considered that the commonly applied empirical design guidelines for tunnel support, based on rock mass classification systems, should be augmented by more explicit design methods. The support design was, therefore, validated by analytical procedures, including numerical analyses, which are described in this paper.

A new generation hydraulic rock drill featuring more than 50 percent higher performance than other drills has been introduced by Atlas Copco. In conjunction with the new rock drill, control systems have developed and refined to handle the higher drilling output, and to maintain an acceptable service life of drill string components. These improved features are built into the Rocket Boomer, a new high-performance drill rig, used at the recently completed Hanging Lake project in Colorado. Experiences from this project will be reported together with results from a highway tunnel construction project in Italy.

Extensive mineralization in the basal part of the Duluth Complex of Middle Proterozoic (Keweenawan) age in northeast Minnesota has been explored during the past 30 years as a potential source of copper and nickel from sulfide-bearing assemblages. Very large resources of low grade and marginal material have been delineated by drilling and by test shafts sunk by at least five private mining companies, but none of the properties has yet been mined. With few exceptions, grade and tonnage figures for specific properties have not been released, but the magnitude of the resources has been estimated by the Minnesota Geological Survey and the Minnesota Dept. of Natural Resources as constituting several billion tons of low grade and marginal copper- and nickel-bearing material - a major combined copper-nickel resource of international importance.

From 1993 through 1999, Cyprus Amax Minerals successfully completed eight major construction projects around the world. Six greenfield mines were brought into production, an ongoing operation was completely modernized and an environmental issue was appropriately remediated. The projects stretched over three continents: from arctic Russia to the Atacama Desert, from sea level to an elevation of 4,900 m (16,00Oft), from city suburbs to remote wilderness and from a low of US$130 million to more than US$ 1billion. The operations included open-pit and underground mines, mill and leach facilities and involved gold, copper, molybdenum and coal. The diversity of these projects inspired Cyprus Amax to create a "best-practices” project-management protocol to steer corporate expansion in the new millennium. This paper summarizes these best practices, while highlighting the project-management pirfalls to avoid.

The extraction behavior of gold in ammoniacal solutions in the presence of bromine as an oxidant has been studied. The effect of concentration of ammonia, bromine, and pH of the solution on the rate of dissolution of gold was investigated. The dissolution behavior has been analyzed using electrochemical method, and its results were compared with direct leaching tests using gold powder. The overall dissolution of gold in ammoniacal solution containing bromine was found be affected significantly by pH of the solution and the concentration of bromine. The rate expression found in this study has the following form.

The oxidation of sulfide minerals at an ore transfer location in Western Canada has resulted in widespread contamination of underlying soil and groundwater. The oxidation of sulfide minerals has released sulfate [SO,] and heavy metals including cadmium [Cd], copper [Cu], nickel [Ni], lead [Pb], and zinc [Zn] into the groundwater. A compost-based sulfate-reducing reactive wall was installed in the path of the plume in an attempt to reduce the potential impact of the heavy metals on a down-gradient marine inlet. Monitoring of the reactive wall over a 21-month period has shown that Cu concentrations decrease from over 4000 ug/L to less than 5 ug/L. Cadmium, Ni, Pb, and Zn concentrations also show similar decreases with treated concentrations generally being observed near or below detection limits.

Caro's acid (peroxymonosulfuric acid) was successfully field tested as a cyanide detoxification agent at a North American gold mine. An on-site FMC generator injected Caro's acid into a mill tailings slurry sump. The WAD cN-(weakly acid dissociable plus free cN-) was reduced from 40-108 ppm to below the target level of 20 ppm using a 1/1 mole ratio of CA (Caro's acid) /CN-. At an inlet CA/CN-mole ratio of 1.8/1, WAD CN­concentrations as low as 4 ppm cN-were achieved. Raw material costs for the cyanide detoxification were cut by 60% compared to using hydrogen peroxide (H202) alone. Detoxification time with Caro's acid was much faster compared to H202. This resulted in completion of detoxification before the treated slurry reached the tailings pond thereby substantially reducing the probability of wildlife fatalities.

Ground support requirements for safe and economical design of room and pillar coal mining layouts are reviewed. The design methods for mine roofs and mine pillars are discussed and the role of the geotechnical aspects is considered. It is shown that current support design procedures in the United States do not utilize fully the latest research findings and the need for more effective technology transfer in coal mine ground control is emphasized. Promising new developments in ground support are identified and possible research areas are suggested.

The complexity of surface mining operations is increasing as attention is directed towards mining larger tracts of lower grade, higher cost deposits. Large tonnage requirements from these mines necessitate utilization of many large pieces of equipment. This equipment must be utilized efficiently, with production maintained at or near designed capacities. Basically, the problem is to select, size, and schedule equipment to maximize profits and minimize adverse environmental impacts (Anon., 1977). The time, manpower, and cost limitations required to analyze a wide variety of situations and alternatives in planning surface mines have been sidestepped with the application of simulation methods using a digital computer. Since a simulator can be programmed to represent the situations which are to be analyzed, many alternatives can be evaluated in a relatively short time. Input variables are easily changed and the resulting changes which take place in the system can be analyzed. When standard methods of analyses are applied, weeks and many man-hours are involved in analyzing large-scale mining operations. At the same time many simplifying assumptions must be made since these operations are dynamic and transient. Hence, it becomes difficult to make sound engineering decisions and take proper and timely corrective action in the absence of simulation methods. This chapter is concerned with the application of one such method, namely, the open-pit materials handling simulator (OPMHS) developed by the Mining Engineering Section, The Pennsylvania State University (Manula, Albert, and Ramani, 1977).

In-mine Continuous Wave (CH) Radio Imaging method (RIM) instrumentation has the capability of measuring EM wave propagation constants in layered formations. The RIM method is based upon the fact that seams of coal, trona, potash, quartzite, gilsonite and oil bearing sands form natural waveguides for low loss transmission of electromagnetic (EM) waves. The waveguide forms whenever the seam is bounded by more conducting claystone, mudstone, shale or in the case of oil/gas traps, by a floor of saline water. Disturbances caused by faults, shear zones, paleochannels, sills and dikes significantly alter the propagation constant. The analytical values of the EM wave propagation constants depend on the physical and electrical parameters of the seam. The values are presented in this paper in a graphical form to assist in the interpretation of RIM tomographic images. This paper compares in-mine geologic mapping obtained during mining to tomographic images of the geologic disturbance zones in a Central Utah coal mine.

Defining classes of ore using geostatistical methods that match historical classifications has presented problems in the past. A simplistic and practical approach to this problem is presented. An example of the approach is presented using a porphyry-type system as a case study. The technique described uses area of drill-hole influence and known conditions from similar deposits, or the production history of the deposit being studied. It provides a practical bridging mechanism for defining the class of ore on a block-by-block basis using the error of estimation value developed during kriging. The approach provides a filtering method that refocuses attention on the adequacy of drill-hole spacing.

The use of a woven wire-mesh screen as part of a flooded-bed dust-scrubbing system is very popular in the underground coal mining industry. It is used in combination with a demister (mist eliminator) to remove dust from the dust-laden air. A study was conducted to measure the pressure drop across a flooded-bed wire-mesh screen at different airflow rates in onephase (dry) and two-phase (wet) conditions. Two empirical relationships between pressure drop and air velocity were developed for dry and wet conditions, respectively. In both cases, the form of the empirical relationships was found to be similar to relationships given by Sabri Ergun for high velocity non-Darcy single and multi-phase flow through porous media. The experiments were repeated on a reduced-scale model of the wire-mesh screen, and the pressure-velocity relationships obtained from the full-scale prototype experiments were tested. The test results show validation of the full-scale empirical formulas on the small-scale model with an insignificant variation. This paper presents the empirical equations for pressure drop across the wire-mesh screen in dry and wet conditions. Researchers can use these equations as a tool to predict total pressure drops for wire-mesh screens of different scale sizes.

Mining at Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting's (H. B. M. & S.) Snow Lake Division is now in the mature stage of the mines lives. These base metal copper-zinc mines have been operating for over 30 years. Stopes had small pillars called "crown pillars", left between them. These pillars range up to 100 meters long by 40 meters wide and 15 meters thick. H. B. M. & S. has been successful in removing these pillars through the use of cable slings, electric scoops, longhole mining and diesel LHD equipment. The different shapes and sizes of these pillars has meant that many innovative techniques have been tried in order to find acceptable economic mining methods. An overview of the different methods will be outlined.

To recycle steelmaking slags for their iron, manganese and lime contents, removal of the phosphorus-bearing dicalcium silicate and calcium phosphate is essential. Slow-cooling of slags was necessary to promote sufficient grain growth to achieve liberation. In situ grain size distribution determination showed that a high soaking temperature, a long soaking time, a very slow cooling rate and the addition of fluorspar promoted grain growth. High gradient magnetic separation on slow-cooled slags removed much of the dicalcium silicate. Liberation modeling was used to discuss the breakage and beneficiation characteristics of the slow-cooled slags.

The January 1988 issue of Engineering and Mining Journal includes two short articles on blasting practices in surface gold mines (Anon., 1988 ; Carr , 1988). A reader of these articles learns, among other things, that a "12 x 13 ft" blasting pattern is used at the Carson Hill Mine, and a "17-ft burden and 18-ft spacing" is used at Echo Bay Mineral's Borealis operation, while at Mascot's Nickel Plate Gold Mine "ore shots are on a 10 x 10 ft" pattern. Like a new edition of the World Book Almanac, these articles are overflowing with useful tidbits of technical data; but, they never mention why the particular blasting patterns were selected. A survey carried out during the Winter of 1988 at six surface gold mines in the western United States also failed to produce a satisfactory answer. The responses from mine planning engineers to the question "why is your blasting pattern X by Y", reduced to "we use X by Y here because we used X by Y at our last operation, and it worked ok." Certainly, with the available decades of experience and professional practice in blast holes design, rock fragmentation in surface mines has been thoroughly investigated. However, and this is the central issue, fragmentation of the rock is not the primary purpose of most rotary drill holes in surface gold mines. The number of underground work entities operating under reduced dust standards in U.S. coal mines has been increasing since the start of the decade of the 80s and is currently approaching 10,000. The concern for controlling the quartz levels in airborne respirable dust in coal mine has manifested itself in several improvements in equipment selection and operation, face ventilation practices, and dust control procedures. At the same time, fundamental studies have been initiated on determining the source-sink relationships of the airborne quartz dust. The P-7 method is the prescribed method for the determination of quartz in the respirable airborne dust samples from coal mines. Questions have been raised on the reliability of the P-7 infrared spectrometry method for quartz analysis in powders. No specific method has been defined for quartz determination in bulk samples from the mine. In a recent study on the relationship between quartz in the airborne dust and that in the materials being mined, both infrared (IR) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) methods were used on a suite of samples from several coal mines. These samples encompassed airborne respirable dust samples, airborne total dust samples, the oversize fraction from the respirable samplers, ROM samples, channel samples, and chip samples from the face, roof, and floor materials. In this paper, the sample preparation and analysis procedures for the samples are discussed. The data, analysis results, and comparisons of the P-7 and XRD results are presented. The quartz percent determined for the same sample by the two methods are different. In 85% of the samples analyzed, the quartz percents determined by the XRD method are higher than those obtained by the P-7 method. However, there is a strong linear relationship between the results from the two methods. Further, the XRD method indicates an average of 20 percent more quartz than that from the P-7 method. The reasons for the differences in the results and the need for additional studies are explored.

Fall of ground is a leading source of worker injury and fatality indicating a persistent need for ground monitoring technology. The HRTMM is an experimental convergence monitor utilizing a digital camera and custom software to track the position of one or more lasers across the target. Apparent laser movement is proportional to target convergence. The HRTMM was installed in an underground mine near active operations to test its response to the mining environment. This included intense blasting vibration and mine fog. Results and potential of the new monitoring technology will be discussed.

Mine engineers have been interested in building models that simulate mining operations since computers were introduced to the industry in the 1960s. Computer models enable operational scenarios to be evaluated without the need for actual field experimentation. Virginia Tech’s FACESIM and CONSIM, Penn State’s UGMHS, and KETRON’s CPMINE are perhaps the best known early models. Recently, SIUC has modified a Microsoft® Excel version of Virginia Tech’s Mathematical Model, calling it the SSP Model. It is used to quantify the significance of various controllable parameters. Productivity increases approaching twenty percent may be achieved where recommendations suggested by the model are applied.
