During the past decade many U.S. industries have realized the importance of a total loss control program; the bituminous coal mining industry is no exception to this trend. Oftentimes, we realize that the circumstances surrounding a "near miss" (an incident which does not result in personal injury or property damage) are practically identical to those associated with a fatality, disabling injury, or major property damage. And, many organizations suffer enormous financial losses in cases where no one is injured or property damaged but costly delays in production result. Detailed analyses of both injury and non-injury cases can provide valuable input into those engineering, behavioral, and management controls that are necessary to prevent their recurrence. The purpose of this paper is to describe a comprehensive loss control surveillance system (LCSS) that will enhance management control in preventing personnel, property, and production losses, thereby, maximizing profit. The next section describes the components of this LCSS. Then, we present one practical example of how this valuable management tool can be used to minimize loss through safety and training programs.

Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) is a quite diffuse environmental problem in dismissed sulphur mine districts. AMD is related to sulphur oxidation of abandoned tailings, generating heavy metal-bearing streams with high iron and sulphate contents and low pH. Treatments of AMD aim firstly to increase the pH to reduce its leaching power causing the further release and mobilization of heavy metals through soil solution and groundwaters. Increasing the pH also allows the precipitation of iron (III) (involved in sulphur oxidation and then in AMD generation) and the partial removal of other toxic components such as arsenic. pH adjustment and the reduction of the high concentration of iron are also necessary for the successive biological treatment in permeable reactive barriers (PRB) with sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) (II step, biologically mediated precipitaton/biosorption) to avoid the rapid plugging of the barrier (for the large amounts of iron precipitates) and to ensure neutral pH conditions for SRB growth. In this work the first step (chemical precipitation) of a combined chemical and biological treatment of AMD is presented. Experimental data from column tests using carbonate stones to remove iron and increase pH were reported. Toxicity tests have been carried out on the treated wastewaters by Lepidium sativum.

Electricity, as normally thought of by a layman's definition, is a man- made force that has no color, no odor, is not visible, cannot be heard, yet man can control it and make it perform his work for him. A person dare not cheat on it, for it then will master him. It has laws, rules, and regulations that must be strictly adhered to if it is to perform in the safest, most reliable, and economical manner. In the early days of coal mining the power source was man himself. Later man employed steam and compressed air to reduce his muscle power requirements needed in the extraction of coal. By the turn of the 20th century, electricity had become the most common source of power for the coal industry. Steam and compressed air are still found in use in isolated cases today for specific applications; however, they are rapidly being replaced by electricity. Electrical laws and regulations are quite extensive and somewhat complex for the proper generation and use of electricity. Man-made laws, rules, and regulations for the care and handling of electricity, designed for man's safety, are rigidly enforced by Mine Safety and Health Ad- ministration (MSHA), as well as the various state departments of mines.

A geostatistical approach is proposed for the design of infill drilling programs. The method consists of the following four major steps: developing geological favorability models, delineating mineralization and ore envelopes, classifying resource potentials, and designing infill drilling patterns. Geological modeling develops the permissible geological zones in which infill drilling is designed. Modeling mineralization and ore envelopes establishes criteria on the potential blocks to be drilled. The blocks that are included within the ore envelopes are considered in the infill drilling. The following four types of resource potentials are used in this analysis: measured, indicated, possible and barren. Blocks in the indicated category are the top targets to be confirmed in infill drilling. Blocks of possible resources may be considered exploration targets. The algorithms involved in the analysis include indicator favorability analysis, indicator kriging and ordinary kriging. A case study on a gold deposit of the Carlin type is presented to demonstrate the methodology. The deposit was originally delineated by a sparse drilling program with about 230ft of average spacing. The infill drilling design, based on the new method, suggests a significant reduction on the number of holes from a regular-grid infill drilling pattern.

Open pit mines require substantial capital investment at the beginning of the operation and replacement investment at later years. The objective of obtaining the highest possible return on investment in a mining project can only be achieved with an efficient long term production plan. This plan consists of optimally determining four principal elements: 1) the amount of ore and waste to be mined each year, 2) the specific blocks to be mined each year, 3) the optimum mine life, and 4) the ultimate pit limits, which delineate the total reserve to be mined. The existing methodologies only provide solutions to one or two elements, by assuming the others known. Furthermore, the cost of mining each block in the deposit is assumed to be known and independent of the production schedule. The four elements of production planning are interrelated and the cost of mining any block is a function of the production schedule. The ultimate goal of this study, ,whose first steps are' discussed in this paper, is to develop a solution methodology that can simultaneously optimize all four elements of the production planning problem in open pit mines without making a priori assumption on any of the four elements.

The total energy demand in the United States increased about 4 per cent annually during the 1960's 1 and is expected to increase at the same rate during this decade. Z Fuel oil growth in the 1960's was only Z per cent per year until 1968, but it increased to 8 per cent in 1969 and 11 per cent in 1970. Fuel oil demand is expected to grow at a 6 per cent rate through the 1970's. Part of this rapid increase in demand has been caused by restrictions placed on the sulfur content of fuels. High sulfur coal can no longer be burned in many parts of the country and has been replaced by low sulfur fuel oil. An insufficient supply of natural gas has also contributed to fuel oil demand. Air pollution regulations have not only caused an increase in fuel oil consumption, but they have also caused a reduction of sulfur content in residual fuel oils. Current regulations call for 1 per cent maximum sulfur content fuels over much of the country. Sulfur contents of fuels are limited to 0. 3 per cent in certain areas on the east and west coasts. Sulfur in residual fuel oils from high sulfur imported crude oil is reduced to 1 per cent currently. However, sulfur reduction to 0. 3 per cent is difficult and expensive.4 As a result, refiners may be hard pressed to supply the market for low sulfur fuel oil. Solutions to typical leaky ventilation circuits such as multiple entry headings and ventilation tube or brattice face ventilation are obtained using the discrete continuous simulation language SLAM II. While the continuous aspect of the language allows exact numerical solution of leaky systems, the particular discrete-continuous interface of this language is easily adapted to space varying geometry and flow parameters encountered in mine ventilation. The ease with which this simulation system is adapted to ventilation problems and the availability on personal computers encourage its wider application in the field.

Epidote is a common hydrothermal alteration product in many copper deposits of the southwestern United States. In many of these deposits epidote, along with calcite and chlorite, generally characterize a distal or halo propylitic alteration assemblage, but the mineral can occur within the central potassic alteration zone as well. Epidote is also a common alteration mineral in deposits formed in calcareous host rocks -- the skarn or pyrometasomatic ore bodies. Within the past 15 years, studies of the major and trace element composition of other alteration phases, principally biotite, associated with base metal ore deposits have demonstrated that some hydrothermal alteration minerals are compositional distinct from their igneous or metamorphic counterparts: However, the use of major and minor element content to identify and zero in on mineral¬ized areas does not appear to be very promising. Little work has been published upon the geochemistry of epidote from this standpoint and the results of my work suggest that a similar conclusion can be applied to epidote. My work (Fellows, 1976) suggests that epidote minerals in hydrothermal alteration suites from porphyry copper deposits in the southwestern United States are generally iron-rich rather than aluminum-rich. As a group, these alteration minerals differ compositionally from epidotes of regional metamorphic terrains. I ascribe these differences to the variations in the oxidation character of the respective environments. However, it appears as though the use of major element compositional variations of epidotes as an exploration tool is severely limited. Epidote is a complex calcium-aluminum silicate. The paper presents the development of a thermodynamic based network analysis model. It uses transient heat flow algorithm for computing the heat flow from strata and predicts the environmental condition in different branches of the network. Along with the environmental condition, the mass flow distribution in network is computed by using nodal pressure method based on linear theory approach. The algorithm has been coded using object oriented programming approach and it has been validated in actual field condition. The correlation is satisfactory.

INTRODUCTION A great deal more is involved in a sampling effort directed at a placer deposit than physically capturing a quantity of representative material and extracting the desired component. The distribution and dimensions of the sample sites must be chosen after consideration has been given to the type of deposit and the concentrating mechanism. Interpretation of the sampling results is likewise an extremely important part of the sampling program. SAMPLE SPACING The interpretation begins with the selection and design of the sampling program. A decision regarding genesis of the deposits and their geometry must be made in order to select a suitable technique and sampling pattern. Deposits differing genetically will have differing distributions and degrees of concentration.

Comparisons of metal price histories with monetary and other economic data support the argument that the supply of and demand for money are no less important in price determination than are the supply and demand of the commodity itself. That these relationships should exist is evident in the price identity and are consistent with monetary theory. The patterns developed have limited usefulness as predictors, but their recognition is essential for the construction of price scenarios for planning purposes.

The Penjom Gold Mine is one of the world's worst preg-robbing gold ores, yielding very low recoveries from traditional CIL methods. Gold recovery from the cyclone underflow was targeted to recover as much gold as possible in the absence of the fine preg-robbing carbon. Gold is recovered by intensive cyanidation and tabling of a gold concentrate produced by gravity from the cyclone underflow. The circuit was designed together with Gekko Systems and uses their InLine Pressure Jig and InLine Leach Reactor technology to reject the preg-robbing carbonaceous material and obtain high recoveries from the gravity concentrate before over grinding the carbon and sulphides. The gravity and intensive cyanidation circuit now recovers almost 50% of gold in new mill feed, with unit recovery in intensive cyanidation of up to 90%, the highest unit recovery in the plant. Operating costs for the gravity and intensive cyanidation circuit are under US$2.50 per oz, while the cost to recover gold from the cyclone overflow is -US$200 per oz. (not including common costs of milling, stripping and electrowinning). Figure 1 shows the increase in gold recovery due to the gravity and ILR circuit coming on line at Penjom.

A few years ago during a Southeastern Geological Society field trip, a professor from a Florida university and a trip leader commented at one of the stops, "... and for those of you interested in the geology ...." More recently, in the spring of 1992, a geology faculty member at another southeastern university remarked, "Field geology is obsolete." An interviewee for a potential assistant position stated that he had never had a field class. This would-be assistant was to receive his Master's Degree in-Geology within a few days from yet another southeastern university. A regional illness? Certainly not, but symptomatic of the general health of Geology. Capitulation to Environmental Sciences seems to be in vogue with Geology becoming a four-letter word and the mention of mining is verboten regardless of the company. These trends permeate our profession while the demands for earth materials increase, often exponentially. Efficiency, a word lost on government, is routinely expected of business--our business--the industrial minerals geologist and producer. Our stage shrinks but the responsibilities expand. Are we meeting the challenge? Stay tuned!

Ultrasonic anemometry is a relatively new method of measuring the air velocity in underground excavations and is not widely used. The method has been mainly used for surface applications, such as meteorology and fluid flow measurement. Several instruments were looked at to determine their applicability for continuous underground monitoring systems. The units fall into two main categories: variable distance units and fined distance units. The method relies on the acceleration and deceleration of ultrasonic pulses transmitted through a moving airstream. This study presents some of the results of the testing of variable and fixed distance ultrasonic anemometers in a wind tunnel and a mine drift.

The 12,710-m (41,720-ft) Riverside Badlands Tunnel is located between the most active faults—San Andreas and San Jacinto—in Southern California. To accomplish the impervious final lining design and to accommodate the effects of earthquake ground motions, a new approach was developed and is prescribed in this paper. Two final lining options, welded steel pipe and prestressed concrete cylinder pipe, are considered for the tunnel, which will be excavated under groundwater and ground conditions from soft rock to hardrock at depths exceeding 244 m (800 ft). The buckling strength, serviceability, and structural integrity under seismic effects and other loads were considered in the design.

The United States produces approximately 40 mil- lion tons of phosphate rock per year. Most of this rock is converted to diammonium phosphate and used as a fertilizer component for the domestic and international agricultural market. Much of this phosphate rock production is concentrated in the southeastern United States, with about half coming from washing and screening operations and half from flotation separation from sand and clay. This paper summarizes current operating practice in the industry and touches on some of the emerging technologies required to solve the problems associated with a diminishing high- grade reserve and the need to implement dolomite/francolite separations on a commercial scale.

Starting in 1967 two major hydroelectric power projects have been implemented in East Africa viz. Kafue Gorge in Zambia and Great Ruaha in Tanzania. The two projects have similar characteristics and each consists of an underground power plant, a dam in connection with the power plant and a reservoir dam. The power plants are both designed and constructed according to principles applied in Scandinavia for a long time. Each consists of a headrace of a horizontal unlined rock tunnel with a length of about 10 km, vertical penstock shafts, machinery and transformer halls in large rock caverns and a tailrace of an unlined rock tunnel with a length of about 1 km. The head of the power plant of Kafue Gorge is 400 m, Great Ruaha 175 m, the capacity is 900 MW and 200 MW respectively. Both plants were executed in one stage, but building and erection works were made in two stages. However, the power plants show some interesting differences in design. The power plants are briefly described in the following, special regard being paid to the excavation works.
