"The ways of the world be many and most of the ways be tried, you follow in the footsteps of others till you come to the great divide". These words, written by Robert Service a long time ago, come to mind when I think of our original attitude upon entering into a contract with the International Nickel Company to sink the deepest shaft in the world outside of the Union of South Africa. This shaft was to be sunk to a depth of 7,137 feet from surface, and while it was recognized by all concerned to be a somewhat unusual undertaking in our part of the world, the fact that quite a few shafts had already been sunk to this depth in South Africa probably gave us the feeling that we were following in the footsteps of others. In retrospect, because this shaft was being sunk under entirely different conditions than those existing in South Africa, we were in fact venturing into an entirely new area of endeavour without properly recognizing this fact. It has occurred to me that others considering a similar type of job could benefit from our experience, especially in an assessment of the risks involved and how they compare to those encountered in an ordinary shaft. For comparison purposes, I would define an ordinary shaft as being sunk to a depth of 5,000 ft or less, and a deep shaft as one being sunk to a depth of between 5,000 ft and 8,000 ft. Although mineral commodities used to play and still play a very crucial role in the development of civilization over the centuries, their extraction, transportation, transformation and use are at present sources of great concern in terms of sustainability. Some of the most discussed environmental problems are in fact closely related to the utilization of minerals as materials and fossil fuels. The paper analyses the origins of sustain-ability weakness of mineral supply through Environmental Economics models, which have interpreted the phenomena of pollution and non-renewable resource depletion as a market failure. Conventional market tools have proved to be unable to perform an optimal allocation of those resources that are priceless or have open access. An external intervention is needed in order to reduce the excessive exploitation of environmental and natural resources. Some of the solutions proposed by policymakers and subsequently implemented by governments are briefly considered and the achieved results are discussed. In several cases the public intervention, where the attempt was to restore the sustainability conditions, has failed. Restrictive environmental protection regulations have resulted in severe limitations to the mining activity, without, on the other hand, achieving the expected results in terms of sustainability. Some of these regulations instigate unfair international competition practices among those producers who do care about the environment, but who have high production costs, and those who supply cheap raw material but whose low costs hide heavy environmental impacts. Nowadays, most of the world?s supply of minerals is being produced in developing countries, with severe global environmental impacts. As effective tools for monitoring the problem, sustainable development indicators could be used by policymakers to duly associate the comprehensive environmental impacts for each mining product, depending on its origin and extraction history.

In 2003, MSHA initiated a survey of the 11 Coal Mine Safety and Health Districts to develop a database for the implementation of Atmospheric Monitoring Systems (AMS) in underground coal mines. Mine operators continue to realize the benefits of improved fire detection capabilities, as the number of mines using the systems, as well as the percentage of mines, continues to increase. Fire detection data and new technology implemented in underground coal mines is discussed as well as regulatory compliance, diesel exhaust considerations and hydrogen interference in carbon monoxide detection.

According to the increasing importance of boom type roadheaders in tunnelling essential problems occuring in the application of these machines are dealt with. Based on a chart including the various stages for decicion finding the excavation method of underground cavities, both the technical limits and economic criteria are discussed in order to determine the range of applicability of roadheaders. Giving examples-the numerous developments in the fields of pick and cutting technology, performance data of boom type roadheaders in hard rock, safety technology and increase in the machines' degree of utilization, research and development of VA is illustrated. Two topic operation examples show partial aspects of the various tendencies of development.

A series of tests were run on soil samples collected near the site of a Socorro, NM lead smelter that was abandoned more than 98 years ago. Three 30.5- x 30.5-m (100-X 100-ft) squares provided 13 samples each. As described in Part I (this issue), each sample was divided into seven splits according to particle size. A mineralogical examination of the fine-size fraction of Pb-contaminated soils failed to reveal crystalline Pb compounds. These authors conclude that Pb is present as amorphous phases or is adsorbed on the surfaces of soil particles. Site vegetation contained elevated Pb levels that increased with increasing Pb amounts in the soil. However, the biological absorption coefficient (BAC) indicates that some of the site's Pb is unavailable, or the plants are able to limit their uptake. Of the vegetation tested, rabbit bush showed the greatest increase of Pb levels in its roots, whereas levels in creosote were highest in the foliage. In cactus, the Pb levels varied. The amount of Pb due to dust incorporated in plant tissue is almost negligible compared to the amount absorbed through the plant vascular system.

To date some 1,000 exploration targets (by way of adits, mine dumps, shafts, outcrops and unstoped mine areas) have so far been identified using an interactive data base system to query a digital data base comprising topographic, cadastral geological and mine components developed as a compilation of old plans, records, surveys and recently flown aerial photography. The exploration targets are intended for early follow-up as part of a 1987 exploration programme to investigate the reserve potential of the former producing property located in southern Utah. Of further interest is the unscrambling of old mine plans to provide drill targets for investigation of unstoped reserves with one target being a possible 800,000 tons in part of the lower workings. The project site encompasses about 3,200 acres of mainly patented lode claims covering most of the claims and mines of the Gold Mountain mining district formed in 1889. Turn of the century mining saw several mines operating whose total production was at least 143,000 oz. gold and 460,000 oz. silver from steeply dipping veins up to 20 ft. or more in thickness.

LOCATION AND EXTENT OF BART TUNNELS The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) during the past six years has become the Owner of 23.5 miles of single-bore tunnels. The tunneling experience gained while working closely with our Engineer and Contractors in the design and construction of these major transit facilities provides a basis for our "Owners" viewpoint. The 23.5 miles of tunnels are divided into two categories. Fifteen and one-half (15-1/2) miles of tunnels were constructed in soft ground underlaying the downtown areas of San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley. Eight (8) miles of tunnels were built in "hard ground" in the hills separating Oakland and Berkeley from Contra Costa County and in the San Francisco hills on the Mission Line. Location of tunnels within the BART system are shown on Figure 1. The tunnels comprise 15.7% of BART's 75-mile dual track system. Their 176 million dollar costs (excluding rail, electrification or ventilation features) are 12.4% of the system's total estimated cost of $1.4 billion. The tunnels constructed in soft ground were shield and boring machine driven with ground support provided by steel liner rings. The exterior diameter is 17 foot, 6 inches in the majority of tunnels; however, on two tunnels with a 500 foot radius of curvature, the diameter was 18 feet. BART awarded 14 contracts for soft ground tunneling. The work was accomplished under free air or compressed air depending upon the ground water and soil conditions, safety requirements, and considerations for protecting adjoining property from damage either from the de-watering operations or settlements due to excavation. The geology of Wyoming has been compared to some of the richest precious metal producing regions of the world including South Africa, Western Australia, and the Superior Province of Canada. These areas are all underlain by ancient cratons that contain some of the oldest rocks on the surface of the earth. But unlike the other cratons, the Wyoming craton (also termed the Wyoming Province) has been greatly modified by Laramide tectonics which thrust slices of the ancient craton through younger Phanerozoic sedimentary rocks. Unfortunately, the nature of the Laramide tectonics left vast regions of the craton at the bottom of the Tertiary basins unavailable to direct examination, but the exposed slices in the mountain cores contain some of the best exposures of Precambrian rock in the world. The cores of these uplifts contain extensive regions of relatively unmineralized gneiss and granite that include scattered fragmented supracrustal belts formed of metamorphosed volcanic, plutonic, and sedimentary rock. Some of these supracrustal belts exhibit similarities to the gold- and nickel- rich terranes of Western Australia. Yet these areas remain incompletely explored. Archean (> 2.5 Ga) gold deposits within the Wyoming craton are primarily confined to greenstone belts and related terranes. These supracrustal belts include relatively narrow vein and shear zone deposits with strike lengths of tens of feet to more than a mile. Some exceptional deposits possess widths of greater than 15 feet to possibly as much as 300 feet, but the majority have widths of± 5 feet. These belts include Cu, Ag, W, Fe, and Cr mineralization, asbestos and pegmatites, and anomalous Ni and Sri in addition to gold. The Proterozoic terrane (<2.5 Ga) exposed in the cores of mountain ranges in southeastern Wyoming includes a thick miogeosynclinal metasedimentary succession which unconformably lies on the Archean craton. These metasedimentary rocks are separated from a predominantly metavolcanic terrane to the south by a major Precambrian suture, or shear zone. The metasedimentary rocks north of the shear include quartzite-hosted stratabound Cu-Ag-Au deposits, Au-Ag veins, and Witwatersrand-type metaconglomerates with isolated gold anomalies. The suture includes scattered base and precious metal deposits in shear zone cataclastics. South of the shear zone, the metavolcanic terrane includes scattered volcanogenic Zn-Cu-Ag massive sulfide deposits, at least one Cu-Au porphyry, and two large layered mafic complexes. The northern edge of one of these layered intrusives yielded some platinum and palladium to miners at the beginning of the 20th century. Phanerozoic sediments host many precious metal anomalies. Some Au-REE anomalies occur in Cambrian conglomerates. Ag-Cu-Zn stratabound deposits are found in bleached Jurassic redbeds in the Overthrust Belt of western Wyoming. The broad Wyoming basins include many enigmatic gold occurrences and anomalies that can only partially be explained by detrital transport in fluvial systems. Many of these anomalies were probably geochemically transported and precipitated. Rocks of Late Cretaceous age along the flanks of the uplifts have numerous black sand deposits. These paleobeach placers contain concentrations of detrital heavy minerals with anomalous titanium, rare earths, and in some cases gold. Gigantic base and precious metal deposits are associated with scattered composite intrusives in the Absaroka Mountains in northwestern Wyoming. This deeply incised volcanic plateau includes several Tertiary age copper porphyry deposits with significant Cu, Mo, Ti, Pb, Zn, Au, and Ag resources that rival the porphyry districts of the Basin and Range Province. In the Black Hills of northeastern Wyoming, disseminated Au-Th-REE mineralization is found in association with fenitized alkalic igneous rock. In addition to disseminated mineralization-scattered gold, fluorite, rare earth and copper veins; lead, zinc, and silver replacement lodes; and tin pegmatites are found in this region.

The aim of this paper is to present the progress of the plan of the Greek Public Power Corporation S.A. (PPC S.A.) at the Lignite Centre of Megalopolis in Peloponnesus (southern Greece) to manage impacts on local communities in areas affected by its activities during the lignite mining operation and post-closure. The reclamation works in the waste dump areas of the mines that constitute the Megalopolis Lignite Centre, concerning the utilization of waste dumps for infrastructure community projects constructions are discussed. Moreover, selected environmental indicators concerning land use and closure and rehabilitation are presented.

The impact of environmental regulations on the quality of tunnel groundwater discharges is examined in this paper. Tunnel contractors usually depend on specialty contractors or outside consultants to deal with this issue without carefully examining their activities to minimize the production of contaminants. This approach may not be adequate given increasingly more restrictive environmental requirements. This paper surveys the general practice of the tunneling industry and attempts to identify sources of contaminants which may affect the total suspended solids, oil and grease content, and pH of the discharges. Strategies for treating the discharges are included. Field data and observations from several tunneling projects are also presented.

This paper describes an experimental setup for multiple fan ventilation systems at the ventilation laboratory of the West Virginia University Department of Mining Engineering. Housed in a 30-ft x 70 -ft room, the experimental setup consists of three 18-in., variable-speed, axial flow fans; an 18-in. -diam, fiberglass tubing; associated fittings for arranging networks; and a picot-tube measuring and data-acquisition system. The fiberglass tubing and fans can be organized into non-planar networks of two or three fans. The setup is mainly designed for studying the characteristic curves, operating points and fan stall for multiple fan ventilation systems.

Metal producers are now suffering through a major downturn in prices for their products even though it has only been a few years since they were enjoying high prices. From an historical perspective, the current situation is another of the cyclical downturns that often occur every five to seven years. This paper uses time-trend decomposition techniques to identify the cycles and statistical methods to find the duration of these cycles for a variety of metal prices. Given some idea of how long and severe these cycles typically are, the mining industry can better plan to weather the downturns and take advantage of the upturns. For example, timing investments in new projects to take advantage of the cyclical upturns can dramatically improve project profitability.

A number of important international events took place in 2001 in the development and evolution of mineral valuation standards internationally. In Canada, the CIMVal Committee released a draft discussion paper for public and industry comment on principles to guide the development of the planned Canadian mineral-property valuation standard. The International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) received comments on its Extractive Industries Issues Paper. IASB will decide whether the financial statements of public mining and petroleum companies will be allowed to provide the value of mineral and petroleum assets on a current value basis instead of an historic cost basis. The author led the Extractive Industries Task Force of the International Valuation Standards Committee (IVSC) in developing its submission to IASB. IVSC intends to develop an extractive-industries valuation section for its International Valuation Standards, which could support the planned IASB standard. In Australia, AusIMM has carried out an in-depth review of its highly regarded VALMIN Code. The AusIMM&apos;s MICA subdivision organized the VALMIN `01 Conference in Sydney, Australia, with a range of international and current issues papers published in the VALMIN &apos;01 book. Considerable support for the IVSC initiative was evident at this conference. The results of the review of the extractive industries submissions to the IASB were expected to be released in early 2002. The CMMI Congress in Cairns, Australia in May 2002 is likely to prove to be an important forum for continued discussion of the development and implementation of international standards and qualifications for mineral valuation. The outcomes and implications of these events are discussed.

The ability of microorganisms such as yeast, bacteria, and various aquatic flora to sorb metals from dilute aqueous solutions is well documented. Although microorganisms have significant potential in decontaminating waste waters, techniques and equipment suitable for bioassisted decontamination are limited. The Bureau of Mines has investigated the use of microorganisms immobilized in porous polysulfone beads for extracting toxic and heavy metals from dilute waste streams. The minus 8- plus 12-mesh beads were fabricated from high-density poly- sulfone dissolved in dimethylformamide (DMF). Dried, thermally killed yeast, algae, duckweed, xanthan gum, and alginates were blended into the polysulfone-DMF, and spherical beads were formed by injecting the mixture into water. Microscopic analysis revealed microorganisms immobilized within the bead pores. The beads had excellent handling characteristics and were tested in stirred reactors, fixed bed columns, and fluidized bed columns for their ability to remove metal contaminants from several waste waters. The effluents resulting from these waste waters met or exceeded the National Drinking Water Standards for cadmium, copper, manganese, and zinc. Other heavy metal contaminants readily sorbed by the beads included arsenic and mercury. Elution of metal values from the beads was accomplished using dilute nitric acid or sodium carbonate.

INTRODUCTION The Laurens Street section of the Northwest Line of the Baltimore Region Rapid Transit System, located along Pennsylvania Avenue between Pitcher Street and North Avenue is situated in material which cannot be definitely categorized as soil or rock. However, in the area of residual soils in which these tunnels were constructed, considerable attention was required to determine the character of the ground so that the designers and the constructors could properly evaluate the behavior of the ground and plan their respective efforts accordingly. The Laurens Street sections structures consist of twin rock tunnels, station structure, traction power substation, vent shafts at both ends of the station, the midline vent shaft, and the twin mixed-face tunnels. This paper concentrates on the mixed-face tunnels which extend from Station 99+67.03 (O.B.) to Station 102+49.00 (O.B.) at the southern end of the section. Since the completion of the design of this project, the Laurens Street section has been renamed the Upton Station. (See Figures 1 and 2). SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATIONS At early stages, three preliminary studies were performed by the General Soils Consultant (Ref. 1, 2, & 3). The purpose of the first study was to ascertain the generalized geological and subsurface conditions which might be encountered in the region. No borings were performed for this study. Appalachian coal mines include operations in eastern Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. During 1994, they produced a total of about 342.5 Mt (377.6 million st) of bituminous coal. This figure represents 37% of the total production from the United States. This region contains nearly all of the nation&apos;s coking coal reserves and high-quality compliance steam coal that will be in demand after the turn of the century as utilities comply with phase two of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendment. Figure 1 shows the location of the study area and the general regions that supply various coal types. Data for the study reviewed here were compiled and interpreted from Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) production reports, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission 423 reports, King&apos;s Export database and additional data from the US Department of Energy&apos;s (DOE) Energy Information Administration (EIA). Table I is an overview of the total production from Appalachia and the delivered tonnage to various sales categories.

At periodic intervals-typically at the end of each month, quarter, and year- the accounting department in each division of a company distributes a set of reports to the division&apos;s managers. These reports describe the financial performance of the division and its major departments over the time period. They identify the revenues generated from the division&apos;s products and the costs incurred in their production. The results from individual departments are combined to determine divisional results, and the results from individual divisions are in turn consolidated to determine the results for the overall corporation. Cost reports for each of these activities show actual amounts, budgeted amounts, and the differences between the two. This reporting is carried out for the individual period and for the year to date.

The Reverse Curve Tunnel Project was located in Glenwood Canyon, Colorado approximately twelve (12) miles east of Glenwood Springs. The Project was one of many being constructed over a period of time by the State of Colorado, Department of Highways to improve Interstate 70 to four lanes as it travels thru the environmentally sensitive Glenwood Canyon. The Project consisted of excavating and concreting a tunnel approximately five hundred fifty (550) feet long, forty two (42) feet wide, and thirty two (32) feet high. The designer was Parsons, Brinkerhoff, Quade and Douglas, with geotechnical consultation provided by Woodward Clyde. CONSTRUCTION CHALLENGES There were several significant construction challenges presented primarily by the physical location of the Project. In this study each problem will be discussed, as well as how it was overcome by construction methods and/or design requirements. Portal Excavation - One of the most difficult areas of work on the Project consisted of excavation and stabilizing the East and West Portal rock prior to tunnel excavation. The Reverse Curve Tunnel passes through a sheer walled cliff face which is approximately two hundred fifty (250) feet high. Geologically the cliff consists of primarily sedimentary deposits with open, weathered joints and vertical faulting. Systematic studies were carried out on the adsorption of the silver thiourea complex on activated carbon. The experimental isotherm data fit the Freundlich isotherm equation. The adsorption rates increased with increasing temperature and decreased slightly with the increase of free thiourea concentration. The concentration of sulfuric acid had little effect on the adsorption rate. Adsorption kinetics correlated well with the Elovich equation, indicating adsorption is the rate-determining step.

"Enhanced heap leaching - Part 1: Insights" (Orr, 2002), different flow and transport phenomena that could significantly reduce leaching recovery were investigated. The combination of such understanding with advanced flow and transport modeling establishes the link between cause and effect, thereby, directing operators to optimal design and construction of new heaps. Modeling of flow and transport in heaps could also point to a unique change in application method or rate that would maximize leaching enhancement of an existing heap under existing situation and leaching history. The use of such a model is cost effective in that it can simulate multiple scenarios of alternative leaching enhancement methods. By simulating a large number of irrigation scenarios, such a model can point to the optimal and/or the most promising alternatives for a particular heap. The authors&apos; simulations concentrate on the effects of changes in application rates and heap design on changes in flow paths and enhanced leaching recovery. Based on such simulations, an intelligent control agent, such as Multiple Resolution Decision-Support System (MRDS) (Meystel and Albus, 2002), could build a new representation of the complex heap-leaching system. And, by learning from historical data and current information, it could provide optimal management of heap leaching and heap decommissioning.
