Gold with minor associated copper mineralization in the area of what is now the Bougainville porphyry copper deposit has been known since the 1920s and was probably known in German colonial times, pre- 19 14, although no records persist other than a reference by Stanley (1922) to copper specimens from Kieta that he saw in Rabaul. Stanley did not at the time believe that they came from Kieta. Gold was first discovered at Kupei by Jack Comb in 1929 and the Kieta Goldfield was proclaimed in May 1930. In December 1932, the Tapu Reward Claim at Moroni - the site of the Bougainville Copper concentrator, was pegged by C.W.M. Evans who prospected up river from the West Coast. The Pumkuna (Panguna) Reward Claim on the site of the subsequent porphyry copper deposit was granted in February 1934 to G.A. Myers. n May 193 1, the Kupei Reward Claim was transferred to Bou- gainville Gold Options NL and later reverted to Jack Comb and then the Bougainville Syndicate, as did the Pumkuna and Moroni claims. Most of the interested parties had come from the Edie Creek rush on the New Guinea mainland. In 1935, N.H. Fisher, the geologist in Rabaul for the New Guinea administration who later became director of the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources in Canberra, reported on the three gold areas. Norm Fisher described the gold and copper mineralization and its habit in great detail and this report had a major influence on the events leading to the discovery in the 1960s. Gold production up to the Japanese invasion probably did not exceed $50,000 in value. Half a ton of copper-gold ore from Kupei was sent to O.T. Lempriere's in Sydney for assay in the early 1930s.

The decade of the 1990s promises to be one of increasing internationalization for domestic minerals producers as they scramble to enhance relative positions in highly competitive, international minerals markets. This "international mining rush" is fueled by developing countries seeking international investment capital to explore for, develop and exploit sizable mineral endowments in an attempt to support the increasingly popular, but expensive, wave of democracy and selfdetermination sweeping the world. This "fuel" typically takes the form of revised mining codes and, often, lucrative investment incentives. These incentives include favorable tax rates, royalty provisions, relaxation of import/ export constraints, depreciation schedules, profit repatriation and other variables that can positively impact mineral investment decision making. Concomitantly, in their attempts to address real and perceived short- and long-term woes associated with enhancing competitive positions internationally, many domestic explorers and producers are attracted to the prospect of finding high-grade deposits in relatively virgin areas. Combined with the investment incentives provided by foreign governments, these high-grade deposits promise lucrative potential returns from projects having short payback periods. Classic examples of this mutual desire to intensify international mining efforts by domestic producers are illustrated by activity levels in countries like Chile, Bolivia and Venezuela in Latin America and, more recently, in Eastern Europe and select locations in the former Soviet Union. As US corporations scurry to send fact-finding, technical, evaluation and financial teams to these presently popular locations, one area of the world has received little attention - Subsaharan Africa. Specifically, the country of Ghana (formerly the Gold Coast) deserves more attention than it appears to be receiving from North American mining companies.

Although it is only utilized in a few U.S. longwall mines, a bleederless ventilation system can be an effective spontaneous combustion control method in mines with a demonstrated history of spontaneous combustion. In order to provide insights for the optimization of bleederless ventilation systems for U. S. underground coal mines, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study was conducted to model the spontaneous heating in longwall gob areas with a bleederless ventilation system. A single longwall panel with a bleederless ventilation system was simulated, and typical ventilation data for a longwall mine was used in the simulations. The permeability and porosity profiles for the longwall gob were estimated using a geotechnical model and were used as inputs for the CFD modeling. The effects of gob permeability and resistance of the collapsed entries on the spontaneous heating were studied. The effectiveness of nitrogen injection to prevent spontaneous heating in the gob was also examined. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has completed a laboratory evaluation of exhaust emissions from a diesel engine using an oxygenated diesel fuel. The fuels tested were soy methyl esters in a neat (100%) form and low sulfur, petroleum number 2 diesel fuel (D2). The engine tested was a Caterpillar 3304, indirect injection, naturally aspirated, 75 kW, diesel engine that is typical of engines used in underground mining applications. The objective was to determine the extent to which oxygenated fuels, such as methyl esters, reduce diesel particulate matter (DPM), and their influence on upon gaseous emissions such as total hydrocarbons, CO, NOx, NO2, formaldehyde, and other exhaust emissions. Heavy- and light-duty transient tests were used to simulate load cycles typical of mine applications. The soy methyl ester fuel produced greater amounts of volatile DPM (organic material) but much less nonvolatile DPM (carbon soot) for overall DPM reductions. A diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) typical of the type commonly used in metal and nonmetal mines was tested with both fuels. The DOC further reduced the volatile and total DPM when used with the soy methyl esters, but increased the total DPM for D2 due to sulfate formation. The soy methyl ester fuel reduced CO and hydrocarbon, and NOx emissions. The DOC further reduced CO and hydrocarbon emissions.

Mining is a capital- and labor-intensive business, and profitability often depends on the ability to squeeze maximum efficiency out of every piece of equipment to achieve safe production. This means keeping every mechanized drill, loader, truck and bulldozer operating at all times, and having a system to coordinate the movements of people and personnel. Mines often use wireless radios to connect equipment with management systems. But growth and changes in a mine?s profile over time can require upgrades to the wireless network. In its openpit gold mine near Carlin, NV, Newmont Mining Corp. has recently upgraded to microwave radio systems to increase bandwidth while maintaining round-the-clock uptime on its wireless network. For many of its operations around the world, Newmont uses Minestar, an operational control software system that allows administrators to dispatch equipment operators and use GPS to track the precise position of every piece of equipment in an operation. Each of the approximately 150 pieces of equipment at the mine has a radio on board. These radios connect to a network backbone that carries information between the equipment and the mine?s operations center. When traffic began to bog down on this network, Newmont upgraded to Exalt microwave backhaul systems to carry dispatch, inventory and control information throughout its operation.

Today, after about 30 years of development, computer-based analysis of geoscience data has reached a mature phase. From the tentative early beginnings recorded in the proceedings of the APCOM meetings, geoscientists are now able to emphasize the need for both pertinent mathematical/statistical models and computer hardware and software. From those models that are well understood in the disciplines of statistics and mathematics and for which effective computational methods are available, practitioners select and develop methodology for their particular purposes. Computer hardware is typically assembled from off-the- shelf components now readily available, with particular emphasis, whenever feasible, on microcomputers for reasons of economy and control by the scientific or engineering user rather than by a bureaucratic computer center. Computer software may be written by the user in high level languages such as Pascal, FORTRAN, or LISP. However, more often today geoscientists use routines available in spreadsheets, data bases, or statistical packages. In so doing, they save time and, programming costs and take advantage of routines written and maintained by large, well- established organizations, while losing the flexibility in specifying exact input/output afforded by writing in a high level language.

Off-highway tire costs represent a significant portion of the total mining costs in openpit, truck-shovel operations. To extend the lives of tires, the site-specific factors influencing tire life should be investigated Valuable data can be obtained by combining historical operational data captured by a mine dispatch system with detailed tire and maintenance histories. Assuming that failure counts satisfy a Poisson distribution, F-tests can be applied to determine significant deviations from desired or target counts. The methodology developed in this paper can be used to identify the haul routes and loading and dumping zones that have significantly higher incidences of tire failure. Corrective action can then be targeted at these zones by modifying the shovel or truck operator practices; changing the haul route maintenance and clean up practices; or altering the bench, ramp or waste dump design parameters. An example is given of the correlation of tire separation and tire impact failures with haul routes for a fleet of nine Caterpillar 793C trucks in operation at the Chuquicamata Mine in northern Chile. A high incidence of impact failures was observed for the ex pit ore crusher and for tires installed in the left outer rear position on the trucks. The latter was postulated to be due to a preference for drivers to execute right-hand turns prior to dumping. Recommendations were made to revise crusher and dump cleanup practices and investigate the feasibility of super-elevating the surface of dumping zones to reduce ground pressure on the left rear tires.

With the exception of reports on commercial deposits of kaolin, fuller's earth, and other specialty type clays, there is little published information on the extent, properties, and potential uses of the clay resources of Florida. Recent studies by the Florida Bureau of Geology in cooperation with the University of Florida and the U.S. Bureau of Mines have proven the existence of two extensive Miocene clay deposits, one in peninsular Pinellas County and the other in southeastern Charlotte County. Drilling and subsequent testing of the clays from these deposits indicate their potential for economic development. Both deposits consist of montmorillonite type clays, have an average thickness of 25 to 35 feet, and are overlain by unconsolidated Pleistocene sediments. Preliminary firing tests indicate that the clays from Pinellas County are a potential raw material for lightweight aggregate production. The clay has good bloating characteristics across an acceptable temperature range with a resultant aggregate density of less than 1.00 specific gravity. The clays from Charlotte County have poorer natural bloating characteristics but might well be used after treatment or with additives. The economic potential and locations of both deposits emphasize the need for locating similar clay resources in the state that might have economic potential so that land use planning and subsequent urbanization will not prohibit their development.

Western Energy Co.'s Rosebud mine in Colstrip, MT, has implemented innovative mining techniques in the past,* and following in that tradition, new techniques for overburden removal were recently introduced at the Montana coal mine. In April 1979, falling coal production left Western Energy in a bind. At that time the company was one of the first to implement a dozer/scraper stripping system for additional stripping capacity. This time around, however, the challenge was to eliminate spoil rehandle with a dragline while digging down 33 in. "Rehandle will increase 20% by going down an additional 3 m past the 24-m level," according to Bob Cope, mine supervisor for Western Energy. To cut this additional expense by eliminating the need to rehandle, Western now uses scrapers to bench down for the dragline. This system utilizes the flexibility of scrapers as earthmoving tools. Although scrapers were originally purchased to fill an immediate need for productive, low-cost overburden stripping, they are now benching and continue to optimize the overall effectiveness of existing draglines. According to the company, the draglines couldn't keep up with production requirements if they had to rehandle spoil material. Benching with the scrapers eliminates spoil rehandle. Western Energy expects to produce 10.6 Mt of coal this year from three active pits in the Rosebud mine. Western estimates that there are enough coal reserves at Rosebud to support a 40-50 year operation. The sub-biturninous coal has an energy value of 9.2-9.4 Mj, 0.87% sulfur, 8% ash, and 20% moisture. Pit A, approximately 610 m long and 45-55 m wide, is the mine's greatest producer. A Marion 8050 dragline with a 46-ms bucket digs 30-33 m to uncover the 7.3-m Rosebud coal seam. Here, the scrapers were put to work benching for the dragline. Long Construction Co., which operates the mine equipment for Western Energy, uses four Caterpillar 637 tandem-powered scrapers, two Cat 631s and two Terex TS-24s. The number and combination of scrapers actually used for benching periodically changes, depending on which ones are needed for topsoil removal and reclamation. Scrapers benched down about 9 m and removed nearly 2.3 Mm of over-burden at pit A. About 1 Mm was placed in a 9-m lift on top of the high-wall at the head of the pit. Industrial-mineral production contributes on the order of CDN$1.5 billion per year to the economy of Saskatchewan, Canada. Potash is the primary industrial mineral produced in the province, followed by aggregate, sodium sulphate, salt, potassium sulphate, peat, clays, silica sand, calcium-chloride brine, and "clinker." Potentially economic deposits of kaolin, diamond, and building stone are under evaluation. All of the major deposits of commodities discussed here are located south of lat 56°30'N. Most of the locations are presented on Figure 1 POTASH Saskatchewan supplies approximately 30% of the world's demand for potash. Eight conventional underground mines and two solution mines produced an all-time high of more than 13 million metric tonnes of potash (KC1) (8 million tonnes K2O equivalent) in 1997, valued at over CDN$1.4 billion. All of the mines exploit the middle Devonian Prairie Evaporite. The four potash-bearing members of the Prairie Evaporite underlie much of southern Saskatchewan and extend southward into North Dakota and Montana and east- ward into Manitoba (Fig. 2). Halite and anhydrite separate the potassic members. The evaporite beds locally are interrupted by solution structures (anomalous ground). Some of the structures may be related to deep-seated tectonic features.

The use of full face boring machines in underground mining has increased considerably in recent years and over 200 raise-boring machines are now in use in the Western World. Several tunnel-boring machines have been tested notably in America, West Germany, Britain and South Africa. A relatively new concept is the blindhole borer, where the machine stands on the lower level and bores a full diameter raise upwards without the use of a pilot hole. Four of these machines have been tested to date in South African quartzites with varying degrees of success. The development of boring technology has created new problems for ventilation engineers and exacerbated several existing ones. This challenge has been met in many varying ways and this paper attempts to provide a review of the current state of the art. Technology and methods are developing at great speed in this field and therefore no final and absolute solutions can be proposed, since each machine and site pose individual problems which are best handled by local knowledge and experience.

This work presents experimental results for the recovery of gold present in alkaline cyanide solutions by using the electroelution technique of strong-base anionic polymeric resins IRA 402-CL from Rhom and Haas-Brazil Ltd. loaded with gold. This technique of electroelution of anionic polymeric resins is based on the removal of metal ions adsorbed to the resin, resulting from a potential difference applied between the cathode and anode in an electrolytic cell. The electrolytic cell was composed of an aqueous solution with suitable chemical characteristics and an anionic polymeric resin bed loaded with gold. The resin used in the experiments was loaded using synthetic alkaline gold cyanide solution with 1.0 g/L of gold. The variables studied were electroelution time, cathode current density, distance between cathode and anode and the electrolyte chemical composition. Statistical methods made it possible to establish the optimum conditions that would achieve satisfactory gold recoveries by the electroelution technique. The statistically predicted response for the resin loaded with gold by percolation was 16.5% gold recovery, 2.0 A/m2 cathode current density, 20-mm distance between electrodes and 6.0 hrs electroelution time. For the centrifuging system, the statistically predicted response was 7.41% gold recovery under the following conditions: 0.25 A/m2 cathode current density, 1-mm distance between electrodes, 3.5 hrs electroelution time and 10.9% NaOH in the electrolyte chemical composition.

INTRODUCTION In 1982 and 1983, as part of the mine design program for a New Brunswick potash mine, series of laboratory tests were conducted on potash and salt samples obtained during the mine exploration program. Concurrently, two rock mechanics monitoring programs were initiated in-situ the short term test at site A, and the long term test at site B (figures 1 and 2). SHORT TERM TEST (FIGURE 1) The purpose of this test was to obtain a quick confirmation of laboratory data and comparison of the rock response to excavation with the data available from Saskatchewan potash mines. Instrumentation in the main drift was installed on Day 4 after excavation, and the pressure cells were pressurized on Day 33. The packer type cells in the east crosscut were pressurized on Day 25. Excavation of the west cross-cut was begun on Day 71. This "mine by" test has provided important information required for calibration of laboratory tests, as will be shown later. The test data recorded are shown in a series of diagrams: a. initial room closures, main drift-figure 3; b. convergence graphs, main drift-figure 4; c. stresses recorded, main drift-figures 5 to 8 and, d. stresses recorded, east crosscut - figure15 Three types of instruments were used in this test. In the main drift. Saskatchewan Research Council water type hydraulic inclusions. encapsulated in potash, were used to measure lateral and vertical stresses. In the east crosscut a home-made packer type hydraulic inclusion was used to record radial stresses. The convergence stations consisted of end-grouted bars of reinforcing steel. LONG TERM TEST (FIGURE 2) The purpose of the long term test was to study the steady-state behaviour of a single opening in potash. Site B was placed in a remote area of the mine, well away from any anticipated early mining activities. To assure homogeneity of rock mass, the site was placed within a 30 meter thick vertical limb of a syncline-shaped ore body contained within a 360 metre thick vertical section of salt rocks. It was excavated mechanically as close as possible to the designed square cross-section for the entire length of the room. The square cross- section was chosen in order to achieve a comparable geometry in vertical and horizontal directions; that is, to eliminate any undesired effects of geometry interaction with lithostratigraphy which might have generated non-homogeneous behaviour. The site was extensively instrumented. As in site A, the convergence stations consisted of end-grouted bars of reinforcing steel. However, in order to avoid any measurement inaccuracies which would be associated with the brittle yield zone in the opening walls, bars were placed to the same depth in opposite sides of the opening. This allowed the convergence measurement to be obtained as the absolute convergence between two points, rather than the convergence of a single point with respect to a potentially unstable reference. For stress measurements the Saskatchewan Research Council cells were placed vertically, laterally and radially. Unfortunately, due to cost considerations, it was decided to use a compacted sand, rather than grout, to encapsulate the cells in the boreholes. Due to the extremely small strain rates, only radial ly placed cells could be adequately pressurized. The rest of the cells did not perform adequately, and are currently being replaced.

The limitation of sulfur dioxide in power plant In this study, the following quality parameters of the coal emissions dictates that sulfur in coal be reduced to the lowest possible level before combustion to not aggravate the emission control problem at the stack. For coal-fired power plants, the methods in practice to achieve low-sulfur coal include mining areas with relatively low sulfur, reducing sulfur in the mined coal through preparation techniques and blending high- and low-sulfur coals. A prerequisite to the successful implementation of any of these practices is the knowledge of the spatial distribution of sulfur and the capability to predict its value in mining blocks. In this paper, the results of a study conducted to evaluate the applicability of geostatistics for describing the short scale variability of sulfur in a coal seam are presented. Four sides of a block of coal to be mined by the longwall method were extensively sampled at closely spaced intervals. The details of the longwall sampling plan and analysis procedures are discussed. The results of the statistical and geostatistical analysis are presented. The implications of these for prediction of sulfur for control purposes are examined.

The McLaughlin Mine is based on a world class epithermal gold deposit located in the coastal thrust fault of northern California, about 1 12 air km (70 air miles) north of San Francisco. Owned and operated by Homestake Mining Co., the McLaughlin deposit contains about 18 Mt (20 million st) of gold ore at an average grade of 5.2 g/t (0.152 oz per st), or about 93 t (3 million oz). The area was identified as a gold target by Homestake in early 1978. Drilling confirmed it to be a commercial deposit by 1980. The mine was then planned, engineered, built and brought into production by March of 1985. The deposit was historically a part of the Knoxville District. It was mined for cinnabar, which was used to produce mercury for use in recovering gold and silver in the Mother Lode and Comstock districts. At that time, the mine was called the Manhatten and later the One Shot Mine. It was worked for more than 100 years, producing about 76,000 flasks of mercury without any awareness of the presence of economic concentrations of gold. By 1978, the site was largely disturbed and entirely unreclaimed.

This study examined the potential of mixing rotary kiln fines (RK fines), a waste product generated when limestone is converted to lime (CaO), with acid producing mine waste to provide 1) short-term mitigation by neutralizing acid produced by iron sulfide oxidation and 2) long-term mitigation by facilitating the passivation of iron sulfide mineral surfaces. Five loadings of RK fines were mixed with 75 g of Duluth Complex rock to produce neutralization potential (NP) added: acid potential (AP) quotients of 0,0.11,0.22,0.66 and 1.1. The mixtures were subjected to wet-dry cycling laboratory testing for 585 weeks. The rock alone produced acidic drainage, with pH decreasing below 4 after about 20 weeks of reaction and ultimately reaching the approximate range of 3.3 to 3.5; sulfate release did not decrease over time. The RK fines elevated pH and inhibited sulfate release for time periods which increased with the mass of RK fines present. The pH of drainage from the 0.11 quotient (NP added1AP) loading decreased below 6.0 after 75 weeks of dissolution and decreased to 3.6 after 117 weeks, at which time the reactor was terminated. The duplicate 0.22 quotient loadings of RK fines decreased below 6.0 after 95 and 170 weeks. The former was terminated after 117 weeks, and the latter reached a minimum pH of 2.8 after 512 weeks. Drainage pH from the 0.66 quotient decreased below 6 after 581 weeks. For the drainages which acidified, the cumulative calcium release prior to pH decreasing below 6.0 was 92 to 103 percent of that initially present as calcium carbonateloxide in the RK fines. The pH of drainage from the 1.1 quotient typically remained above 8.0 throughout the period of record. Sulfate concentrations in the drainages decreased while the neutralizing fraction of the RK fines was present, but increased after this fraction was depleted.

Heap leaching in certain parts of the world, such as Chile's Atacama Desert, brings unique design problems in the form of possible large differential settlements of the foundation soils due to the dissolution of salts. In northern Chile the soils often c?ntain very high concentrations of soluble salts (nitrates, potas­smm, magnesium, and common sodium). When a leak in the liner occurs, the escaping solution dissolves these salts and trig­gers differential settlement. If the settlement is great enough, the geomembrane tears, the leakage increases, triggering more dif­ferential settlement. The nitrate plants have experienced many occurrences of this phenomenon where a brine pond will under­go a sudden and complete loss of the impounded liquors. The authors present a simplified technique to quantify the differential settlement resulting from dissolution and provide a method which can be used to select a geomembrane with suit­able flexibility under axi-symmetric (multi-axial) load condi­tions to tolerate the predicted settlement.

Diesel engines are used in underground mining 1 throughout the world. Exhaust gases from those engines contain toxic components. To protect quality in underground mines, diesel emission control was introduced decades ago, many years before the first surface applications. Today, emission controls, such as catalytic converters, are standard on underground diesel engines in countries concerned with occupational safety and health. Nett Technologies manufactures a range of diesel emission-control devices for underground mining. Emission problems are not the same at each mining operation. And there is no universal control technology. The selection of exhaust aftertreatment technology depends on raw exhaust emissions, particular emission problems, fuel quality and economics. Some of the technologies that have been used in underground mining to control diesel emissions include catalytic converters, diesel filters, fume diluters and water scrubbers. Table 1 compares the effectiveness of these technologies to control the particular components or aspects of diesel emissions.

Since 500 B.C. Mt. Penteli has been famous as white marble production site, which provided the birthstones for the construction of Athens Acropolis and Parthenon. The Aloula quarry belongs to ?Dionyssomarble S.A.?, a commercial and industrial marble company, which retreated after 1940. Disturbance in the site was minimal since then. In July of 1994 the reclamation started by a group of quarry workers from Paros, already familiar with traditional marble quarrying techniques, unchanged from antiquity to 1940. The project was complete in 1997. Our main objectives have been to show respect to the area and the art of people, to let nature guide our choices, to use only local stone as a construction means, to imitate the old construction rules and to turn the land use into amenity and civilization. Aloula quarry will become a site restored for amenity and civilisation, including ancient quarrying techniques. The restored quarry is already open to the public, though to a small number of visitors, and soon will become an amenity park and an open space museum of the ancient quarrying art.

PT Kaltim Prima Coal's 13.1 km overland conveyor was commissioned in 1991. It is of conventional 3 roller 350 troughed belt type. Cost and performance optimisation during initial design ended up with 5.4m/s belt speed, 1,000mm belt width to convey 1,350tph, and 7mtpa of coal. Despite high initial figure, the belt speed was lifted to 6.5 mps in 1996 to accommodate mine throughput increase. In 2002, new low loss ST2100 1,100mm wide belt replaced the old ST2250 due for change-out. An upgrade project was initiated at the end of 2003 to further increase the belt speed to 8.5 mps, hence to increase the OLC capacity to 30mtpa. Performance data, experience of site personnel, site observation and tests, benchmarking, and information from equipment manufacturers were major inputs to the design review. The project fast track was another challenge in addition to executing modifications on a production lifeline. The project was completed within fifteen months and the OLC was successfully commissioned at 8.5 mps belt speed in February 2005. The OLC has been to date conveying 4200tph satisfactorily.
