Mineral sands mining for ilmenite, rutile, and zircon will disturb over 2,500 ha of prime agricultural farmland in Virginia and North Carolina (USA) over the next 20 years. Mining of the Virginia deposit was initiated in 1997 and approximately 750 ha have been disturbed to date with approximately 150 ha reclaimed to support a mix of agricultural post-mining land uses. While considerable university research and corporate effort were devoted to developing environmental management systems and reclamation protocols for these lands, specific indicators of sustainability and restoration success were lacking. By 2003, it became apparent to the mining operator (Iluka Resources), local land-owners/farmers, local government, and the regulatory authority that testable indicators of reclamation success were essential for long-term sustainability. Virginia Tech worked cooperatively with all stakeholders to review the pre-existing research base and to propose reasonable expectations of post-mining soil productivity levels. The state regulatory authority reinforced its position on a number of associated issues including necessity of topsoil return and specific comparative crop yield targets. Virginia Tech, Iluka Resources, and a local leaseholder (Carraway-Winn family) agreed to jointly manage a 45-ha research demonstration farm where the effects of alternative soil reconstruction practices are being rigorously monitored for both row crops (corn and wheat) and forage production. All mined land crop yields are also compared to an adjacent undisturbed exceptional quality prime farmland soil. Corn and wheat yields in 2005 and 2006 were significantly above county average yields (regulatory target level) and approximately 75% of undisturbed adjacent prime farmlands. This cooperative effort allows all clientele groups to objectively assess the post-mining productivity of these mined lands while providing an invaluable educational opportunity for the mining industry.

Judging from the progress made in August 1989, drilling and raise boring of a 400-m (1312-ft) pilot hole at the Elura mine of Pasminco Ltd. in Southeastern Australia, an observer would never guess that the project had been delayed nearly a year. Moreover, two pilot holes had been abandoned in previous attempts. The challenge was to drill a 93-mm (3.66-in.) H size exploration hole between Elura's 400- and 800-m (1312and 2624-ft) levels. The hole needed to be kept within a 300-mm-diam (12-in.diam) target cylinder over the 400 m (1312 ft) distance. The deviation restriction of the initial core hole was necessary to precision ream a pilot hole to 330 mm (13 in.) and then raise bore a 6-m-diam (20-ft-diam) shaft, planned as the primary men and materials access between the two levels. Core was not really necessary to gain an accurate geological picture of the steeply dipping formation. Rather, the core barrel was used because it tended to drill a straighter hole. Using rock bits in the steeply dipping formation would have simply aggravated the problem of deviation. The core barrel and diamond bit optimized the probability of a straighter hole. However, on the first two attempts to drill the pilot hole, the bit was out of the 300-mm (12-in.) target cylinder within the first 50 to 60 m (164 to 197 ft), and the holes were abandoned.

The first 0.7 m3 (1 cu yd) diesel load- haul-dump vehicle (LHD) arrived at the Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, SD in I969 to muck a ventilation drift. Others soon followed. Mechanization has subsequently changed stoping methods, manpower requirements, ventilation practice, the definition of minable reserves, and it has impacted safety and health. These have all had a direct bearing on the economics of producing gold ore from deep underground. Mechanized mining Before mechanization, production quotas at Homestake were met by several open cut-and-fill (OCF) mining methods. OCF mining relied on jackleg and wagon drilling, electric and compressed air slushing and cribbed raises brought up through the fill. Even square- set stoping was used until about eight years ago. The mine became 100% mechanized in 1988. The two current stoping methods are mechanized cut-and-fill (MCF) and vertical crater retreat (VCR). In 1992, MCF accounted for 54’S, VCR for 44% and development/uphole for 2% of the 1.4 Mt (1.55 million st) of underground ore produced. These methods are typically ramp- based and use diesel-powered LHDs, trucks, pneumatic drill jumbos and utility vehicles. Electric LHDs and rubber-tired compressed air muckers have also been used in VCR scrams. Pfarr (1991) and Mitchell (1980) provide good overviews of current production methods.

An evaluation was performed on a district recirculation system at a trona mine in Granger, WY. A 1.52 m-diam (5 ft-diam), 37.3-kW (50-hp) vane axial fan was installed in a crosscut between the intake and return airways and recirculated about 31.4 m3/s (66,578 cfm) of air back into the intake. This amounted to a recirculation factor of about 20% of the return air. This air was part of the primary ventilation to three different continuous miner sections at operating distances of between 610 m (2000 ft) and 1829,m (6000 ft) from the recirculation fan. The mine environment was constantly monitored for respirable dust, methane and carbon monoxide in the operating sections and in the main intake and return entries. In addition, air samples were taken with and without the recirculation system during the evaluation and analyzed using gas chromatography. The results of this study showed only small increases in dust, while all other mine contaminants remained at such low levels that it was impossible to determine any relative changes from the recirculation system. Because of this, a brief SF6 tracer gas analysis study was subsequently performed to more precisely determine an increase in a mine contaminant with the recirculation system.

The research work outlined in this paper examines the utility of index tests for evaluating the strength of coal, both in the laboratory and in-situ. For routine evaluation of strength and deformation properties of coal seams, as inputs for design in stability analysis and equipment selection, the index tests are cost-effective and also make less demand on time and manpower. Four index tests, namely Protodyakonov Index, Cone Indenter Index, the Point Load Strength Index and Schmidt Rebound Hammer, were evaluated for 13 coal samples and correlated to fundamental strength and deformation properties such as uniaxial compressive strength, Brazilian tensile strength and modulus of elasticity of the same coal stratum. The index tests, barring Point Load Index, showed relatively low percentage scatter compared to the fundamental strength and show marked advantages for routine estimation of coal seam strength.

The recirculation of mine air in an underground colliery, has always been regarded as a hazardous practice in South African collieries. The Mines and Works Act and Regulations states that fresh air, flowing Into an underground section, must flow out directly into the return airways after being utilized once in the section. One of the largest producing underground collieries in South Africa, Initiated a project on controlled recirculation with the permission of the South African Government Mining Engineer. The project involves the recirculation of 65 m3/s of air inside a ventilation district which serves a total of six production areas. The aim of the project was to increase the airflow to the sections without altering the existing ventilation system. Tracer gas studies were carried out to determine the actual distribution of the recirculated air to the individual areas. The results showed that an effective 54,18 m3/s of the recirculated 65 m3/s reaches the sections. This gives an air utilization figure of 83,4 per cent. Dust surveys were also carried out as part of the project to determine the effect of the recirculation of the return air on airborne dust levels. The results showed that the dust levels remained constant in the main intake and return airways and that no hazardous situation was being created. The project proved to be successful and showed that controlled recirculation can be executed and used as a solution for the supply of air to sections without endangering any lives.

The scope of work for the fast track construction of the Weeks Island Replacement Facility, Weeks Island, Louisiana included the design and construction of two salt mines. Mine #1 - An interim underground mining level consisting of a 975 m (3200 ft) incline and 3520 m of 5.5 m x 7.3 m (11560 ft of 18 ft x 24 ft) drill and blast excavation; raise boring; core drilling; roadheader excavation; complete bulk material handling facilities utilizing an existing production shaft. Mine #2 - Simultaneous with the interim mine construction a new one million ton per year underground salt mine was constructed consisting of: two 5.5 m diameter x 381 m (18 ft diameter x 1250 ft) deep shafts; 76450 cu m (100,000 cu yd) of drill and blast bottom excavation; surface and undergound bulk material handling systems (conveyors, skip loaders, shaft equipment, hoisting); ground freezing for water control for both the production and service shafts; the design of the first underground doublewall slipform installation of a dynamic bitumen shaft lining system; the emergency grouting of both the existing production shaft and the interim mining level in the salt dome; 227 mt x 64 m (250 ton x 210 ft) high structural steel production headframe; 2.2 MW (3000 hp) double drum mine hoist; service shaft headframe; and service buildings.

Physical mine modeling and computer simulation techniques were used to conduct technical feasibility and economic analyses of selected pit configurations for surface mining a single coal seam dipping at about 15% to a maximum depth of 46 m (150 ft). Pit orientations along the true dip (dipline), along the strike (strikeline), and along an apparent dip were studied. Physical models of each pit configuration were prepared first to delineate potential operational problem areas and also to furnish data for the computer simulation models. A dragline microsimulation, a shovel/truck simulation, and a surface mine cost analysis models were used to conduct the study. Sensitivity analyses were conducted on variables such as the pit width, block length, and seam pitch. The productivity (m3/h) of the mining equipment (dragline or stripping shovel) under each set of conditions was used to optimize the pit configuration. Both block length and panel width were found to significantly affect the dragline productivity. Larger size trucks were preferable to smaller size trucks in the pit con¬figuration along an apparent dip. The cost analysis results showed that the pit configuration along the seam dip was more economical than the pit along the strike or along an apparent dip for the mining condition studied.

The paper describes the computer simulation of climatic conditions in the longwall workings in India. For this simulation work the longwall panels have been divided into two segments, viz; the intake gate segment and face segment. Two computer models, one based upon transient heat and moisture transfer algorithm of McPherson (1986) and the other on quasi-steady algorithm of Starfield and Bleloch (1983), have been developed for intake gate segments. Similarly two computer models, one based upon the transient heat flow in cylindrical tunnel with certain modifications of McPherson algorithm (1986) and the other on linear heat flow concept, have been developed for face segment. The models incorporate the necessary running and spot heat sources present in their respective segments. In addition to this the goaf heat flow parameters have been incorporated in the models for the face segments. Continuous recording of important thermal parameters have been carried out in several longwall faces in India to validate these models and the results have been presented.

This study presents the development of a simplified artificial neural network (ANN) for the characterization of rock mass with a simultaneous display of its output in a three-dimensional interactive environment as well as in the form of a text document. The system was developed using JAVA object-oriented language, virtual-reality modeling language (VRML) and JavaScript, and it runs on the Internet. The user can walk through a three-dimensional virtual roadway, checking the underground rock mass behavior and, consequently, can design a support system. The system first characterizes the rock mass with the help of a neural network and recommends a suitable support system for the particular geomining condition. The system then represents its output in a three-dimensional environment. The neural network developed in this system was trained with 261 data sets, and its performance was evaluated with five case histories. The evaluation results showed that the network could identify the rock category and support system adaptively. The average error for the support load was 2.7%. Among the five case histories, two were represented in a three-dimensional environment. The output obtained from the overall system compared favorably with the existing underground conditions.

Acid mine drainage waters generated in the uranium deposit Curilo, Bulgaria, were treated by means of a pilot-scale passive system consisting of an alkalizing limestone drain, a permeable multibarrier for microbial dissimilatory sulphate reduction, biosorption and chemical neutralization, and a natural wetland, connected in a series. The waters had pH in the range of about 2.5 ? 4.1 and contained radionuclides (uranium, radium), heavy metals (copper, zinc, cadmium, lead, nickel, cobalt, iron, manganese), arsenic and sulphates in concentrations usually much higher than the relevant permissible levels for waters intended for use in the agriculture and/or industry. The water flow rate through the passive system varied in the range of about 5 ? 15 m3/24 h, reflecting water residence times of about 60 to 20 hours. An efficient removal of pollutants was achieved by this system during the different climatic seasons, even during the cold winter days at external air and water temperatures close to 0°C. The removal was connected with different mechanisms but the microbial sulphate reduction played the main role during the warmer months of the year. However, during the cold winter days the removal of pollutants was due mainly to their sorption by the solid dead plant biomass (cow manure, plant compost, straw) present in the multibarrier as well as to their precipitation as a result of chemical neutralization caused by crushed limestone.

Measurements reported in the paper were recorded in an active Green River, Wyoming, trona mine, partly as a teaching exercise and partly to provide the mine in question with additional input data for its ventilation network program. Measurements were made: - in representative three-entry intake airways in room and pillar sub-mains; - between the lower portion of a vertical down-cast hoisting shaft and the start of an intake airway system established in a room and pillar main; - in a representative downcast section of a divided vertical shaft, and of the collar entrance loss at the top of the same compartment. Pressure differences were measured with manometers and trailing hoses, air flowrates with calibrated anemometers, and barometric pressures and wet-and dry-bulb temperatures were recorded for density determinations. Where possible, results are quoted as Atkinson friction factors, and relevant measurements are recorded in some detail to show the magnitude of fluctuations in observed pressure differences.

An efficient state-of-the-art dynamic model to simulate and predict the rate of water production in longwall coal mining operations was developed as a tool for mine planning purposes. The model can also provide an estimate of any potential resultant hydrogeological impacts of an operation via an array of element-specific single-valued parameters referred to as the field rating indices. The computational procedure was designed to fully exploit the benefits of hydrogeotechnology and use a combination of conceptual, physical, empirical, and numerical approaches to define, characterize, analyze, and evaluate flow controlling properties of fractured rock systems. The model presented here provides a dynamic prediction method for highly fractured flow; a practical tool in mine and water control planning; and a cost-effective means of assessing, based on the best available technology, the impacts of mining on the water resources within a mining environment to satisfy local and federal regulatory requirements. Unique features include consideration of laminar and non-darcian flow domains in double-porosity-pressure hydrogeological media.

Operations research includes the application of systems analysis to mining operations, the acquisition of field data and the creation and verification of computer models of these operations. These activities result in the generation of computerized mine planning tools which have a firm base-in observational facts. The Surface Mining Laboratory of the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET), in Devon, Alberta has been engaged in operations research activities since 1982. The work includes computer simulation of truck/shovel, continuous mining equipment and dragline operations. Other examples include cooperative programs with industry (such as the demonstration and evaluation of an integrated truck management system), the development of a device to measure off-highway truck rolling resistance, and an automated remote data transmission network. The presentation outlines existing and proposed research projects of the Operations Research group.

This work describes the effect of the degree of energy transferred to the pulp, during the conditioning stage, on gold flotation fines recovery, grade and kinetics, with three types of frother (Dowfroth 250, pine oil and MIBC) and amyl xanthate as collector. Best results show an increase in 24% recovery and 50% in concentrate grade, depending on the intensity of conditioning and type of frother (better with Dowfroth 250). For low or intermediate energies (0.5-1.5 kWhlm3 pulp), the fine particles adhere to larger ones, increasing the recovery due to a mixture of carrier (pyrite, in this case) and autogeneous carrier flotation and at higher shear (2-3 kWhlm3 pulp), gold fine particles aggregate themselves. These phenomena are demonstrated by measurements of flotation rate, true flotation (flotation by actual particle-bubble adhesion), and by the amount of entrained particles. Alternatives for this type of pulp conditioning and mechanisms involved are discussed.

The power consumption of stirred-media mills was studied using an approach developed from work on stirred reactors. Evaluated were the relationships of factors such as stirring speed and impeller and tank dimensions on the torque required to rotate disc and pin impellers immersed in dense particulate media. Data collected under carious experimental conditions were analyzed. The results were summarized and presented in the form of characteristic plots, general equations and dimensionless group correlations involving power and modified Reynolds numbers. Special attention was directed towards the rheological properties of the media, which was considered a non-Newtonian liquid, and hence the equation of power-law liquids was employed. A procedure for estimating the parameters of effective viscosity and scale-up guidelines (with respect to power consumption) are proposed.

Toxic substances in On solutions can retard biological leaching of sulfide dump ores. On solutions were ana1yzed for metals, organics and chloride and showed inhibitory concentrations of aluminum, manganese and chloride. Inhibition of bacterial activity by the solid fraction of On solution with and without the organic constituents, was evaluated. Bacterial toxicity was evaluated by monitoring bacterial numbers, pH, Eh, and rates of iron oxidation. The On solution solids were toxic at 50% to 60% of their field concentration. Most of the toxicity of the On solution was due to the organic fraction. Different solvent extraction (SX) reagents show varying degrees of inhibition of T. ferrooxidans. Bacterial inhibitory effects of carriers and lixiviants used in the SX plant should be determined so that entrained SX reagents do not retard biological dump leach systems. The reagents used should be the most cost-effective and the least toxic.

In this paper, the results of a research study on airborne dust transport in a full scale simulated longwall face are presented. The simulated longwall face was set up in the Lake Lynn Laboratory mine of the U.S. Bureau of Mines to conduct experiments under controlled conditions. The controlled parameters in the experiments were the dust dispersion rate, dust size distribution, density of the dust, air velocity, and the rate of travel of the dust generating source. The analyses of the experimental results on mass concentrations, particle size distributions, and real-time respirable dust concentrations are discussed. There are definite spatio-temporal trends between the location of the shearer, the concentration at any location in the face, and the dust generation rates. The size-consist and density characteristics of the source dust, the air velocity in the face, and the air leakage into the gobs all affect the concentration.

During mining, the surficial aquifer and, in some cases, the top of the uppermost confining unit within the mined areas are excavated. Portions are removed from the area for resource recovery. Until the mined areas are reclaimed, the surrounding unmined area continues to dewater. The impact of mining and subsequent restoration of the surficial aquifer on the ground and surface water resources of the watershed affected by the mining will be described. This will be done in terms of ground water recharge, ground water levels, and base flow and runoff to surface streams. Data from actual mining situations will be used in analyses and discussion. Recommendations will be made for further research.

This paper examines the interaction problems of multiple seam mining by combining underground investigation, laboratory testings, and numerical modeling. One case of multiple seam interaction that occurred recently in West Virginia was carefully studied. Causes for the interaction problems were identified and the corresponding mining recommendations were proposed. The principle of pillar columnization and the effect of a remnant pillar on mining operations in the underlying and over- lying seams were also carefully examined. Considerable attention was given to the effect the pillar size, the pillar width, the coal stiffness, the extraction ratio, the degree of inhomogeneity in the interburden, the overburden thickness, the mechanical properties of the interburden rocks, the strata inclination, the interburden thickness, and the in-situ horizontal stresses have on the pillar load transfer mechanism.
