The stresses in the heads and shell of a grinding mill are largely dependent on the bending moment produced by the trunnion bearing. By using spherical roller bearings in a special narrow housing a short moment arm is obtained and the bending moment is reduced. For large mills a hydrostatic shoe bearing which also gives a short arm, can be used. Spherical roller bearings also require less maintenance and have a long service life. As the bearings are grease lubricated an automatic lubricator is used instead of an oil lube system. Service data from two Swedish mining companys confirm the fact that the above arrangements provide a long service life.

Delayed coal bursts in deep coal mines have caused significant fatalities and economic losses in recent years. Instead of occurring right around the advancing face, this particular type of coal burst is characterized by its occurrence at a certain distance behind the advancing face. To better understand the mechanism of a delayed coal burst, we used borehole camera, electromagnetic CT, and borehole deformation monitoring device to observe the fracturing and deformation process of an advancing entry’s surrounding coal in the field. Borehole camera detection showed a zonal disintegration phenomenon in the advancing entry’s surrounding coal. Electromagnetic CT detection showed that zonal disintegration developed within 14 days of excavation. Borehole deformation monitoring indicated a deformation rate difference between the intact zone and fractured zones. The deformation rate difference was observed to increase with time and cause increasing elastic energy accumulation in the intact zone. The cumulative elastic energy in the intact zone finally caused a delayed coal burst in the entry. Sensitivity analysis of the cumulative elastic energy was conducted based on a thick-walled model deduced from field detection. The model shows that the smaller thickness of the intact zone brings higher elastic energy in the intact zone. This investigation provides an improved understanding of delayed coal bursts in deep coal mines.

Personnel at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) are studying the technology and applications of salt-gradient solar ponds (see below) for both electrical and thermal energy generation. The brine extraction and processing site operated by the Kerr-McGee Corporation at Searles Lake, California, offers ideal conditions for economic construction of solar ponds. Furthermore, since rising conventional energy costs adversely affect the economic recovery of brine by the present process, this site was selected for a study on the feasibility of integrating the solution mining of trona (Na2CO3?NaHCO3?2H20) in the lower salt with solar ponds for heating. The major emphasis of this study was to determine whether inexpensive thermal energy available at the brine extraction site would be useful in extracting increased mineral value from the resource. The present operation, which involves the simple extraction of the complex brine and its processing at the adjacent plant, is sometimes referred to as solution mining. Since the concept discussed in this paper involves injecting a heated sodium sulfate brine to dissolve carbonate underground, the proposed scheme is referred to as "enhanced" solution mining. During recent years fuel consuming industries of the United States have been caught between environmental restrictions and the uncertainty of obtaining an inexpensive fuel. With the advent of the National Energy Act of 1978 there has been added impetus to switch from gas and oil to coal. For industrial furnaces and boilers that were designed to bum coal, returning to an available compliance coal might be feasible. However, furnaces and boilers designed for gas or oil cannot reasonably be converted to coal unless the coal is initially gasified. All cases, nevertheless, depend upon the availability of an adequate structured coal of a compliance composition, a challenge to the coal mining industry. The foregoing problems have contributed to the current energy-coal crisis of today's economies. It therefore would be worthwhile to capitalize on previous experiences of the mineral processing industry.

Bright-orange couplings adorning piping systems are a common sight in just about every underground mine in North America. Grooved mechanical piping, the pipe-joining system that utilizes these couplings, is the preferred method for joining underground and plant piping systems in the mining industry, due to the ease and speed of installation and maintenance. However, the applications for such systems have traditionally excluded high-pressure systems. Most grooved mechanical couplings have a moderate working-pressure limitation, so high-pressure systems have required the use of alternative joining methods, typically heavy-duty flanges. However, the introduction of high-pressure couplings (up to 4,000 psi) has made the grooved joining method viable, and even preferable, for backfill, deep-mine chilled water and dewatering lines and other high-pressure piping applications. As engineers explore the use of high-pressure couplings, questions will undoubtedly arise about the joining method?s capabilities. This article will address the capabilities and specifications of high-pressure couplings, and compare flanged and grooved mechanical pipe joining in traditional as well as high-pressure underground mining applications.

In 1958, the coal industry, through Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., and the electric utility industry, through the Edison Electric Institute and the Association of Edison Illuminating Companies, initiated a joint program to study coal pyrite and its removal as a means of lowering the sulfur content of steam coals. It was assumed that significant amounts of pyrite often remained in washed steam coal not because available systems for coal cleaning were inadequate, but because the pyrite was small and widely disseminated, During the first two years, samples of coal were examined petrographically to determine the size, association, and mode of occurrence of the pyrite in the raw coal and in the products of laboratory separation, Samples of coal were also pulverized in different equipment to determine how effectively pyrite was released by pulverization and if the mode of pulverization affected the liberation of pyrite. From these studies, the following tentative conclusions were made (1 ): 1. Much of the coal pyrite is within a 250-70 micron size range, and therefore is too small to be removed by conventional coal cleaning, but relatively large when compared to the size of coal as pulverized for combustion in large boilers. 2. The degree of pyrite liberation is mainly determined by the size of the product and not by the type of crusher. 3. For improved pyrite removal, the coal should be cleaned during or after pulverization at the power station.

At the start of the 20th century Denver?s population was 203,795. Most streets were unpaved. Buildings were constructed of wood frame or masonry. Transport was by horse-drawn-wagon or rail. Statewide, aggregate consumption was less than 0.25 metric tons per person per year. One hundred years later Denver had a population of 2,365,345. Today Denver is a major metropolitan area at the crossroads of two interstates, home to a new international airport, and in the process of expanding its light rail transit system. The skyline is punctuated with skyscrapers. The urban center is surrounded with edge cities. These changes required huge amounts of aggregate. Statewide, aggregate consumption increased 50 fold to over 13 metric tons per person per year. Denver has a large potential supply of aggregate, but sand and gravel quality decreases downstream from the mountain front and potential sources of crushed stone occur in areas prized for their scenic beauty. These issues, along with urban encroachment and citizen opposition, have complicated aggregate development and have paved a new path for future aggregate development including sustainable resource management and reclamation techniques.

The Appalachian coalfield, located in eastern Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia, has been one of the most productive in the United States. Total production from the Appalachian coalfield during 1994 was 340.8 Mt (375.4 million st), or 37% of the 929 Mt (1 billion st) produced in the United States that year. This region contains various coal types from high- to mid-sulfur coal in Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia to low-sulfur, compliance steam coal and premium-grade metallurgical coal in eastern Kentucky, Virginia and southern West Virginia. The region's product is in high demand in domestic and export markets. Productivity continues to improve, resulting in the primary coal operators solidifying their market positions.

Heap leach technology provides several benefits to combat these issues including low cost, flexibility and diversified process conditions. This paper provides an overview of heap leaching technology with specific emphasis on chemical aspects. Hence, influencing factors, advantages and disadvantages, testing approaches and some fundamentals will be discussed. Finally, heap leach technology for different ore types (copper, nickel, uranium and gold) will be briefly compared.

Using powerful database management software, nested-field analysis and microanalysis of narratives have been made of West Virginia accident data, resulting in a new approach for targeting and prioritizing safety interventions by county, mine size, specific mine, job title, type injury, etc. and combinations of these parameters. The analyses have been useful in focusing training and discussion sessions on specific work problems, trends, conditions, and situations for targeted groups of miners. Application of the technique will be presented in this paper, along with comparisons of various mine performance measures.

The present work is concerned with selective dissolution of niobium from Gabal El Faliq concentrate sample by using fluoridefree process. The chemical analysis of concentrate sample revealed the presence of high amount of ZrO2, Nb2O5, Re2O3, and HfO2 assaying 33.6, 1.99, 4.8, and 1.2%w/w respectively. Several economic minerals including zircon, samarskite, fergusonite, and xenotimewere recorded in the studied sample. About 98%of Nb content was selectively dissolved at the optimumconditions of 1:2 concentrate sample: KOH weight ratio, 2.5 h fusion time, and fusion temperature of 550 °C. Organic solvent extraction process using Aliquat 336S in xylene was effectively used for preparing pure Nb2O5 (98.95%).

The use of plate and frame filter presses for dewatering cement copper at Kennecott' s Bingham Canyon precipitation plant is described. The dewatering process begins by periodically flushing a dilute copper slurry from cone precipitators to a rake thickener. The thickener underflows intermittently to an agitated surge tank which feeds the filter presses with a relatively constant slurry containing 10 to 20% solids. The presses operate with a three-stage cycle; loading, air blowing and discharging. Exothermic reactions occur during the air blow which cause actual drying as well as promoting dewatering via simple filtration. At the completion of the air blow, the presses are discharged onto a conveyor belt which transfers material to the load-out building for shipment to the smelter. An extended investigation was undertaken to relate moisture content in the filter cake to maximum press temperature, acidification of press feed, percent solids in the feed, and percent insol in the copper. Of these, press tempera¬ture and feed pH (3. 5 to 1. 0) have the greatest impact on drying. Because the discharged filter cake is hot and continues to undergo exothermic oxidation, significant drying occurs during subsequent handling so that a product containing 8 to 14% moisture is delivered to the smelter.

The mining industry is no stranger to hard times. Throughout its history, the industry has faced the ups and downs of commodity prices, difficult-to-mine-and-process ore bodies, labor issues and other problems. Throughout it all, though, the mining industry continues to provide the materials needed for society —even in the face of attacks by those who seek to cripple the industry or have it go away. The reason the mining industry survives, of course, is that mankind requires the products the industry produces. And, in recent decades, the industry has developed new technologies and improved on existing ones to produce those products in environmentally sound ways. At the same time, the economic benefits have been enormous to communities throughout the world where mining takes place.

The roasting process of copper concentrates containing variable quantities of arsenic in a fluidized bed regime was analyzed, considering the technical literature published on the topic in the last quarter century. Although emphasis has been given to the analysis in the fluidized bed regime, other processes have also been considered, under a reducing, neutral or oxidizing atmosphere. The kinetic mechanisms of roasting, as well as the models that have been applied or those likely to be used to explain the kinetics of arsenic removal, are analyzed. Regarding the kinetic mechanisms, those that have been applied to copper concentrates with both high and low arsenic content are included. The roasting kinetic model includes the kinetic data analysis techniques, general models, equations and an estimation of the conversion degree through dynamic, differential and integral methods, as well as particular models for mineralogical components, such as smelter dust and copper concentrates with low and high arsenic content.

Cyprus Pima Mining Company is located in the Mineral Hill District of southern Arizona, approximately 22 miles south-southeast of Tucson. Cyprus Pima Mining Company is owned 50.01% by Cyprus Mines Corporation, 24.99% by Utah International Incorporated, and 25% by Union Oil Company of California, with Cyprus having the management responsibility. Cyprus Pima's history has been one of continued expansion from an initial plant of 3,000 TPD in 1957; 6,000 TPD in 1963; 18,000 TPD in 1966; 36,000 TPD in 1967; and 53,500 TPD in 1972. The major reason for Expansion IV was that a large volume of low-grade ore had to be moved to get at a higher grade ore in the course of proper pit development. With mining costs already defrayed, this relatively hard, low-grade material became economically profitable for subsequent milling and concentrating treatment. Similar material previously stockpiled was available for ore treatment. In an effort to meet the continuing search for lower unit costs, the largest milling and concentrating equipment had to be examined. The management of Cyprus Pima Mining Company began investigating autogenous, and semi-autogenous milling in 1964 when two carloads of ore selected from the Cyprus Pima pit were sent to the Koppers--Hardinge Operation at York, Pennsylvania for testing. One car contained approximately 40 tons of hard arkosite and the other contained approximately 40 tons of ore classified as soft Hornfels. The purpose of the testing was to determine the amenability of both ore types to autogenous or semi-autogenous grinding.

Paul Y. – SELI Joint Venture had been contracted to build the longest section of the Strategic Sewage Disposal Scheme (SSDS) – Stage I. This involved two tunnels under urban and marine areas excavated by high performance hard rock open type TBMs operated from deep shafts. A specific ground treatment program was developed using advance probing and grouting to control water inflow into the excavations. The article describes: the technologies adopted, the experienced problems, the encountered productions and their interrelation with the water inflow amounts, the possible improvement in the technologies for the excavation of the future stages of the same project as well of any other project under similar conditions.

"Within the energy concept of the German government, the operating time of nuclear power plants was initially extended from about 8 to 14 years. It is planned, however, that every power plant will gradually be decommissioned until 2025 and that simultaneously the amount of renewable energies will successively be expanded. According to the political state, nuclear energy is a discontinued model. Looking at the global energy market, though, an obviously opposed development can be observed. At the moment, 443 nuclear power plants are running worldwide and further 62 facilities are being built. These about 500 nuclear power stations have to be supplied with nuclear fuel right now and in the future. The present paper will describe the worldwide use of nuclear energy, the extraction of the nuclear fuel uranium and in detail the available and predicted resources of uranium. The conclusion of the paper is the statement that uranium as nuclear fuel is no scarce resource but sufficiently available."

"Tunnels designed to NFPA 502 are required to withstand the RWS time-temperature curve, more specifically prevent progressive spalling and loss of strength of steel reinforcement. Fire boards or spray-on layers can be effective, however, these solutions have capital and whole-life cost implications. The use of “fire resistant” concrete based on a suitable aggregate with polypropylene fibers has also increased in recent years. This article presents a new methodology for thermal and structural analysis of segmentally lined tunnels, which permits the analysis of project specific fire curves and an assessment of different fire protection strategies. The effectiveness of fire boards is assessed along with whether “fire resistant” concrete alone is a viable means of achieving the required protection. Finally, since NFPA 502 recommends water-based fixed fire-fighting systems for Category C and D tunnels, we discuss the question of how a fixed fire-fighting system should be addressed within the structural design. INTRODUCTION Protecting road tunnels from structural damage and collapse is a key requirement for both life safety and business continuity. Where road tunnels are part of key highway corridors, protecting business continuity is a high priority for owners, operators and the Authority Having Jurisdiction. For existing tunnels, compliance with NFPA 502 may require upgrades with either passive fire protection and/or water-based fixed firefighting systems. For new tunnels, compliance with NFPA 502 requires a combination of good practice in design and fire testing. A water-based fixed firefighting system is a Conditionally Mandatory Requirement1 for Class C and D tunnels, i.e. all tunnels greater than 300m and 1000m long respectively. The basis for fire safety design of new tunnels and assessment of existing tunnels is the worst-case fire scenario. A short review of the current practice and recent developments is followed by a description of a newly developed approach for the solution of the optimum ultimate pit limit problem. The new approach utilizes the network modeling of the problem for solution by maximum flow algorithm. The latest developments in the implementation of maximum flow algorithm present significant time and memory savings as compared to initial development due to Ford and Fulkerson. Results of a series of computational tests are presented to demonstrate how this approach performs as compared to the well-known Lerchs Grossman algorithm. It is also shown that the solution by the new method will automatically include several optimal solutions based on predetermined number of benches to be included in the analysis.

Introduction It is estimated that nearly 40% of all the gold ever mined in free world countries has been produced by South African operations. There is concern that this immense productive capacity will soon decline. Such a decline could reduce world gold supply and lessen the ability of market economy countries (MEC) to exert the major influence upon the world gold market. This paper addresses three general issues concerning South African gold production: • How much gold remains to be recovered from the demonstrated resources of the 44 evaluated South African mines; • How long can production at current levels continue; and • What will be its cost. Table 1 provides production data on the world's 10 largest producers for the years 1971, 1981, and 1983. As shown, South African gold production declined significantly from 1971 through 1981. As of 1981, annual South African gold production had dropped by more than 311 t (10 million oz) in 10 years. Despite this, its mines still produced 656 t (21 million oz) that year, about half the world total. From 1981 through 1983, this trend was reversed. Annual South African gold production increased by more than 21.8 t (700,000 oz). The trend reversal was also evident in the US, Canada, and Australia. This illustrates the general, inverse relationship between gold price and gold production. In South Africa especially, as gold prices increased substantially during the 1970s, the average grade of ore mined (pay limit) was lowered as new, lower grade areas and materials were exploited. Gold production declined in volume. But gold revenues increased, and the lives of the operations were extended. The 1981-83 period was one of declining (US dollar-based, average annual) gold prices that resulted in increasing South African production as average ore grades were raised. South Africa currently accounts for 50% of world production (Fig. 1). Figure 2 illustrates South Africa's contribution to total MEC production in 1971 and 1983. Although South Africa's relative share of production has declined, it still represents the single most important source of new gold supply. In 1983, it supplied more than 65% of total MEC production. South Africa currently produces more than twice as much gold as the Soviet Union (ranked second in world production), and 11 times more gold than the US (ranked fourth in world production).
