Flotation is the primary method for copper minerals separation from porphyry ores. The need to process difficult-to-float porphyry copper ores presents challenges to engineers and scientists in several areas. This paper is concerned with summarizing generalized problems faced in the processing of porphyry ores and treatment methods to overcome the specific problems. Though some of the problems are interrelated the problems have been classified into three broad catagories. The case studies of some of the successful applications of innovative methods to solve problems related to ore mineralogy, metallurgical aspects of ore treatment and process variables show that quite often the problems are solvable by a judicious choice of flotation variables.

Introduction "Austerity" is perhaps an overly generous description of the past three years in the American steel industry. Steel plants operated at an average of only 57% of their capability in 1982-84. The dismal losses for last year are still being totaled. But during the two years before this period, American steelmakers recorded an aggregate net loss of a staggering $6.8 billion. Steelmakers responded by closing numerous marginal facilities. And production capability was cut by 13.6 Mt (15 million st). Capital expenditures still averaged $2 billion annually. But this was inadequate to maintain the existing base of steelmaking facilities. The general economy experienced a satisfactory recovery during this period. American steel, however, continued to suffer from a lagging recovery in the capital goods sector. This was due to record penetration of its domestic market by imports and from very weak realizing prices on the volume that was available. In addition to the direct influx of offshore steel products - which itself depressed prices - the industry also became painfully aware of the growing importance of "indirect" imports. These came in the form of steel-containing producer and consumer durables. Industrial equipment and autos fabricated from foreign steel accounted for the equivalent of 6 Mt (6.5 million st) of lost market opportunity for domestic steel-makers last year. That is over and above the 23.5 Mt (26 million st) of direct steel imports. Given these factors, Inland Steel was not spared from the threeyear downpour of red ink. Despite its record of continuing modernization in steel, our single-plant location in the world's best steel-consuming market, and the high proportion of consumer durables related products, such as cold rolled and coated sheet in our mix, Inland suffered aggregate losses of $277 million during the 1982-84 period. Strategic Planning The foregoing establishes a perspective - a base from which we have restructured our view of the steel industry, and of our own role within that picture. Until possibly two years ago, this present weakness in steel demand was viewed around the world as an aberration, eventually to pass. By contrast, it is now recognized that austere times are the normal steel environment. The topic here is management of resources. This implies an emphasis on strategic planning. It is worthwhile to examine some of the more critical assumptions that were driving strategies among a number of steel companies just before the 1980s. Those projected characteristics of the future steel environment were arrived at through painstaking analysis. They were carefully and heavily quantified and were generally shared by outside observers and our peers within the steel industry. • First, the assumption was made that domestic steel demand would continue to grow at an average rate of 2% per year. • Second, it was assumed that this growth in the American market would continue to be filled predominantly by US mills. Soil erosion is strongly related to soil hydraulic properties. Understanding how surface coal mining impacts those properties is important in developing effective management practices to control erosion during reclamation. Soils from undisturbed areas, roughly graded mine spoil, replaced topsoil before seeding, and revegetated areas at the Rosebud Mine in Eastern Montana were evaluated to determine impacts on soil hydraulic properties. Field and laboratory studies were conducted to determine soil hydraulic properties, including particle-size distribution, organic matter content, and saturated hydraulic conductivity. WEPP simulations and risk analyses were performed on the soil hydraulic property data to determine the impacts of changes on soil erosion. The hydraulic properties of the soils in each representative area have significant differences due to the mining and reclamation practices at the mine. WEPP simulations show that the potential for soil erosion increases due to mining activities disturbing the soil. WEPP simulations also indicate that the potential for erosion may return to pre-mining levels over time with effective revegetation practices.

The intelligent selection of wire cloth and perforated plate for screening surfaces seems a rather confusing subject to the newcomer in aggregate processing. The proper application of various screening surfaces is a complicated one and one could consider himself an expert only after many years of working with all applications. However, part of the subject matter could be simplified considerably for, the average screen user. In this paper an attempt will be made to do this, by presenting some comparative specification data along with cost figures Unfortunately, it is impossible in the limited scope of this paper to give actual service comparison records between different cloths or cloth and plate. Anyone who has considered making actual service comparisons for competing screening media is well aware of the almost insurmountable problems Their solution would form the basis for a separate paper on that subject alone. Therefore, this paper will be limited to comparative data up to the point of installation.

Talc is an important industrial commodity due to its wide-ranging intrinsic properties; however, the presence of iron oxide hinders its industrial utilization. Herein, we report the purification of Pakistani talc through acid leaching assisted by chlorination techniques. Among various acids (i.e., HF, HCl, H2SO4, HNO3, H3PO4, Aqua Regia, H3BO3, and CH3COOH), HF was the most effectual, removing up to 67% of iron oxide at optimized conditions of temperature, 90–95 °C; time, 120 min; HF concentration of 5%; and at a pH of 1. In the second step, chlorination of the talc sample was performed separately by both wet chlorination and dry chlorination. Wet chlorination was carried out using KMnO4 and HCl in slurry phase which shown about 52% removal of iron oxide, whereas dry chlorination with CaCl2 at high temperature attained about 48% removal of iron oxide from talc sample. Further, the wet chlorination of HF leached samples was also performed under optimized conditions which showed up to 87% iron oxide removal. The original and treated talc samples were characterized by EDX and XRD analysis to monitor the changes in the elemental and mineralogical composition of the talc. It can be concluded that HF leaching followed by wet chlorination is an effective method for the upgradation of low-grade Pakistani talc ores.

The uncertainty associated with a reserve estimate has generally been expressed as a subjective ranking rather than a quantitative expression of either reliability or uncertainty. These rankings of estimate reliability have taken a very nonquantitative bent as well. For example, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission definition of proven reserves is given as: Reserves for which (a) quantity is computed from dimensions revealed in outcrops, trenches, workings, or drill holes, grade and/or quality are computed from the results of detailed sampling and (b) the sites for inspection, sampling and measurement are spaced so closely and the geologic character is so well-defined that size, shape, depth and mineral content of reserves are well-established. This is an update of an original dissertation on this topic by Lavallee, McIvor and Stolovitch (1992). A step-by-step, technical procedure used to measure and improve the performance of plant grinding circuits was adapted into a training program. ?Systematic Design of Instruction? was applied to: ? Determine if training was a suitable way to deliver this new technology; ? Define the technical content of the program; ? Select program specifications based on learner and context characteristics; ? Design, create and test prototypes of the training modules; and, ? Establish a process for plant implementation. The training program covers numerous skills that are extremely valuable for plant personnel, not only in the grinding area, but also for many other parts of the plant. This paper describes how new skills are brought into the workplace through designed instruction can be an effective alternative to hiring during severe skilled labor shortages.

"Tunneling and Underground works are unequivocally subject to a diversity of inherent uncertainties associated with the geotechnical, hydro-geological and environmental regime that surrounds them. On many occasions, these uncertainties can provoke loss events of considerable consequences. The present contribution elaborates on losses that the insurance market has suffered in the recent years, following a construction failure event. These losses are being considered and analysed on a quantitative basis through evaluation of cost related data, with explicit discretization of the applied construction methodology and of the subsequent developed failure type since both of which are considered of major importance. Given the identified persistence and regularity of some loss-contributing factors, recommendations are provided on the basis of a proactive risk engineering management approach that are envisaged to reinforce the understanding of project risks and alleviate the incurred insurance cost. 1 INTRODUCTION The underground construction sector has always been a very challenging area for all involved parties, including the insurance market. Main reason for that remains the uniqueness of the uncertainties sources and the subsequent inherent risks that the tunneling and underground projects are exposed to. In many instances, these risks materialize, leading to loss events with substantially high impact on reinstatement cost and incurred delays, which depending among others on the insurance coverage will have to be bared by the Insurance market. In the recent decades and as the tunneling industry boomed and expanded with many major and significant projects undertaken around the world, the insurance market was faced with additional challenges. Increased competition during tender coupled with the scale and complexity of the projects and politically driven decision making exerted pressure on the project timelines, completion dates and budget. The pressure for on-time or even early project completion- to avoid liquidated damages or achieve bonus payments, respectively- along with cost reduction efforts and the incentive for innovative failure events. That, in turn, put additional pressure on the Insurance market which had experienced a significant amount of losses with substantial cost. One of the triggered mitigation actions was the introduction of the Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works (ITIG, 2006 & 2012; MunichRe 2006, Wannick, 2007, Spencer, 2008, Adeyemo, 2011)."

The inquiry into the explosion at the Moura No. 2 Mine in August 1994 recommended -?Emergency procedures should be exercised at each mine on a systematic basis, the minimum requirement being on an annual basis for each mine.? (Windridge et al. 1996). In December 1996 the ?Approved Standard for the Conduct of Emergency Procedures Exercises? was published and has been subsequently revised (Queensland Department of Mines and Energy Safety and Health Division 1999). This document provided guidelines for conducting mine site emergency exercises as well as the requirement for a test of state-wide emergency response by holding a Level 1 Mine Emergency Exercise at one mine on an annual basis. From 1998 to date (January 2008) ten Level 1 Mine Emergency Exercises have been held in Queensland, Australia. This paper discusses each of the exercises conducted to date as well as the logistics, scenario preparation, planning and organising required to conduct emergency exercises at this level.

Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP), commonly known as black lung, is caused by the inhalation of respirable coal mine dust and is a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease with no cure. Historically, CWP has taken a tremendous human and financial toll in the US coal mining industry. Recent health surveillance data indicates that CWP continues to occur at elevated levels. Respirable coal dust exposure must be controlled to prevent the development of CWP. The Pittsburgh Mining Research Division of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts laboratory and mine-site research to identify control technologies that can be used to successfully reduce respirable dust levels. Various technologies, using multiple methods of control, can be applied in order to reduce dust levels. An overview ofCWP’s impact and a general methodology for controlling respirable dust in underground coal mines are discussed in this paper.

The only significant iron ore deposit in Hungary could be found in Rudabánya. The mine was closed in 1986. The area of Rudabánya was always the home of heavy mining activity. In former times, mainly silver and other non -ferrous metals were excavated.

INTRODUCTION Geotechnical investigations for tunneling projects typically use vertical test borings and, to a lesser extent, angled borings. Horizontal drilling applications were often limited to specialty testing programs and to perform probe drilling from a tunnel boring machine (TBM) as part of production tunneling. The former often involved cumbersome setups with skid rigs and cribbing in a pilot tunnel or shaft. The latter usually was limited to generic probing for rock quality and ground water conditions with no sampling. Neither yielded continuous core at production rates suitable for design and construction planning. Conventional vertical investigations still make sense in many instances, particularly for tunnels planned beneath urban settings where truck access is convenient and where the tunnel horizon is not readily accessible via a portal or shaft. However, equipment is presently available to conduct horizontal geotechnicall investigations at reasonable production rates and cost. Advantages include continuously sampling the tunneling horizon and minimizing “access drilling” to get the zone of interest at the underground construction horizon. Horizontal boring lengths of up to approximately 800 m are considered feasible and those in the range of 150 to300 m are now routine. These capabilities make horizontal borings an attractive option to consider when looking at deep tunnels beneath ridges, especially where access is limited. Fewer drilling staging sites can also mean reduced environmental impacts when investigating tunnels proposed beneath sensitive lands such as public wilderness areas. Investment in early construction packages to develop portals for investigation access and, possibly in excavating test shafts for the same purpose should even be considered. Potential benefits in the form of achieving improved overall project costs using horizontal borings exist because of the significant additional data collected in the tunnel horizon. For this reason they should be considered during the routine cost-benefit analyses generally conducted for planning geotechnical investigations for tunneling. The normal practice for processing complex sulphide ore has been to grind with steel balls and/or rods in steel mills before flotation. Little thought had been given to the effect of grinding media on flotation selectivity of copper-lead -zinc ore until 1960 when Rey and Formanek(1) published their experiments on sphalerite floatability after grinding in a porcelain mill with ceramic pebbles. The studies by Rey and Formanek had a pronounced effect on the milling of copper-lead-zinc ores in Canada and possibly throughout the world at a time when autogenous grinding was creating a great deal of interest. The impression was created, and possibly still exists with some mill men, that grinding an ore in the absence of steel will result in a loss of selectivity between copper, lead and zinc minerals. This is in spite of the fact Rey and Formanek's experiments showed that the "naturall floatability" of sphalerite was not apparent after grinding in a porcelain pebble mill in an alkaline pulp.

The Lower Concourse C Extension (LCE) 108-in Storm Sewer consists of a 2,797-foot long, 27 to 55-foot deep, 108-in I.D. storm sewer tunnel. Situated beneath active taxiways and a terminal apron at Hare International Airport (D), the tunnel diverts ows from existing storm sewers located within the footprint of a future satellite concourse. The project was delivered via Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) as part of Chicago Department of Aviation’s (CDA) ongoing O’Hare 21 Capital Program. This paper presents project details, multiple stakeholder coordination, subsurface risks and challenges, TBM performance, and impacts to existing infrastructure.

Higher production, better safety standard, and potential for automation are some of the benefits of longwall mining. Today, longwall face advances at a faster rate exposing many diversified rock layers in a short period of time. It is now a serious challenge to cope with ground control problems such as roof falls, face and floor failure, and excessive shield loading as fast as possible to minimize production and monetary losses. In Illinois coal mines, the existence of weak floor strata blow the coal seam may pose additional problems related to floor heaving, shield base punching, and associated roof and face falls. In this study, the effects of weak floor on longwall ground control are analyzed using two-dimensional finite element models. A two-leg 635.6-ton (700-short-ton) yielding capacity shield is included in the models to evaluate the effects of different thickness and material properties of the weak floor. The study indicates that the thickness and material properties of weak floor have significant effects on shield loading, the distribution and intensity of front abutment stress, failure zones in the surrounding strata, roof-to-floor convergence, and floor punching by the shield base.

Phosphogypsum is a byproduct of the manufacture phosphoric acid. There are approximately one billion tons of phosphogypsum stored in stacks in northern and central Florida. The Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR) is investigating potential uses of phosphogypsum. These include using phosphogypsum as a road base material, as a soil amendment in agriculture, as a daily cover in landfills, and as a construction material. The results of this research will be presented and will be discussed in light of regulatory barriers to the use of phosphogypsum.

In recent years, federal and state regulatory agencies have tightened air emission standards. Two of the acid gases, hydrochloric acid (HCI) and sulfur dioxide (SO2), are under heavy scrutiny for reduction. . Most traditional scrubbing systems, i.e. wet scrubbers and spray dryers, meet the standards but they typically are high in capital cost, have significant space requirements for equipment, and are difficult to maintain. Dry sodium injection (DSI) is a alternative technology that has been shown to be effective in HCl and SO2 removal while being the inverse to the problems listed with traditional systems. This paper covers the mechanics of dry injection scrubbing using the most effective sorbents, sodium bicarbonate and mechanically-refined trona (natural sodium sesquicarbonate). It presents DSI performance data for Chambers Medical located in Hampton, SC. This facility incinerates local medical and municipal solid waste. Chambers Medical has used mechanically-fined trona for HCl and SO2 removal since late 1991.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the Co and Mn resource of the West-Central Arkansas District, including field investigations, mineralogical characterization, beneficiation, and hydrometallurgical tests. The deposits occur within the Ouachita Mountains and are con-trolled structurally, occurring along the axes of anticlines making up the mountain ridges. Brecciated novaculite is cemented with a mixture of Mn oxides, primarily cryptomelane and psilome-lane. Cobalt is concentrated within a particular Mn oxide phase, lithiophorite. Chemical analyses on head samples reported up to 25 pct Mn and 0.17 pct Co. Magnetic separation yielded products with up to 41 pct Mn and 0.22 pct Co at recoveries of 95 pct Mn and 93 pct Co.

At the same time that computers and robotics move the shop floor toward becoming the unmanned "factory of the future" [1], they increase the need within the overall production enterprise for new types of technicians and engineering professionals [2]. Based on previous works which examined, first, the evolution of the technology of manufacturing toward the flexibly-automated factory of the future and, second, the technical- professionalization of U.S. manufacturing sectors [1,3], this paper looks briefly at the workforce of the U.S. metals industry.

On April 14, 1975, Consolidation Coal Company began to operate a longwall face in their Shoemaker Mine using shield supports. This was the first time that shield supports were used in the United States (1) 1/. Shortly thereafter, Kaiser Steel Corporation started a shield longwall face at their York Canyon Mine (2). From October 1975 through May 1976, three more longwall faces were commissioned in mines located in south-western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia. In June 1976, four installations had completed their first panel and two installations had completed the subsequent move to the second panel where coal production is now well under way. During this time (April 75 to June 76) the total number of shield support face operating months, including moving time, was 40 and the combined face advance was approx. 17, 000 feet (5200 m) with face lengths varying from 450 - 550 feet (137 - 168 m). While the shield support experience in the U.S. is still limited on the basis of time and mining parameters, the operating results of all faces have been very satisfactory. New record 24 hr production figures were set and - far more important - long term production figures could be sustained on an impressively high level even when taking face moving time into account. The purpose of this paper is to review the performance of shield type supports in the U.S. and to assess their value as longwall supports for U.S. underground mining conditions with regard to roof control, maintenance, operator convenience, safety and productivity.
