The existing Central City Tunnel was built primarily in the 1930s with a small portion as old as the 1880s. It conveys stormwater in downtown Minneapolis. It is a 4,400-ft long tunnel located 80 feet underground. The Central City Tunnel has experienced surcharging and surface overflows during heavy rainfall events. This paper presents the details of tunnel and shaft design for the new Central City Parallel Tunnel to mitigate the overflows. The design considered hydraulics and geotechnical engineering for the structural geologic conditions including the weak Saint Peter Sandstone and overlying strong Platteville Limestone. Ground conditions resulted in tunnel designs including large flat-back box tunnels and unique cathedral-shaped tunnel sections.

Electrowinning is a process by which metals, such as copper or nickel, are recovered from aqueous electrolyte solutions resulting from the extraction of the metal ion from an acidic or basic leach solution. The electrolyte or “pregnant” solution is customarily forwarded to an electrowinning "tankhouse." In the tankhouse, the metal ions are deposited on cathode plates by electrodeposition and then recovered from the cathode plates. Other processes may be employed with other metals, such as nickel, zinc, among others, to produce an electrolyte from which their respective metals are obtained. During the electrowinning (electrodeposition) stage, elemental metal is plated out at the electrowinning cathode and oxygen evolves at an insoluble anode. The evolution of oxygen gas forms bubbles which entrain strong acid electrolyte, carrying it into the air above the electrowinning tank in the form of a fine mist or spray when the bubbles break. An acidic mist is generated above the electrolyte. This mist or spray then spreads throughout the electrowinning tankhouse. The acidic mist is corrosive and a health hazard and can cause extreme discomfort to the skin, eyes, and respiratory systems of tankhouse workers, especially during hot weather conditions. Polyfluoroalkyl based products (PFAS) have been widely applied as anti-misting agents in the electrowinning of metals in an acidic electrolyte. Functionalized PFAS compounds, however, have come under increased scrutiny by the EPA due to their impact on human health and the environment. There remains need for improved acid mist suppression agents for electrolysis and electrodeposition, particularly for products free of fluoroalkyl components.

For the years 1990 and 1991, West Virginia's underground coal small-mine fatality rate « 20 employees) was approximately ten times higher than the national coal industry rate. Although the total number of fatalities decreased to 17 in 1992 (from 22 in 1991), West Virginia still led ,the nation in coal mining fatals. A team of mining and safety professionals from West Virginia University studied the problem over the past year, interfacing with the Mine Safety and Health Administration and the West Virginia Office of Miners' Health, Safety and Training. A clear path for 'formal intervention was determined and is presented here.

The Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits allows us to isolate the circuit classification system efficiency (CSE) from the mill?s grinding performance. The factors which affect circuit CSE are reviewed, with emphasis on water usage at the classifiers. It is shown that manipulation of such water usage can be carried out to improve plant grinding circuit efficiency, at times by more than 30 percent.

On Nov. 4, 1981 the newly installed 1000tph wet-process iron-ore ball mill of A/S Sydvaranger completed its first four months of uninterrupted, successful full-load operation in Kirkenes/Norway. This 6.5m diameter mill is driven by a gearless ring or wrap-around motor of 8100kW at 13.1RPM - a first of a kind in this segment of industry. (Fig. 1) This paper analyses the reasons that have led to the selection of this type of drive over more conventional schemes, lists specific advantages of such large mills, and describes in some detail the installation in Norway. General aspects of possible design variations, and application information for designers and users of such mills conclude the presentation.

A packed column jig has been developed for sharp separation of fine particles--150 down to 1 micron--having different densities. The packed jig is a column filled with corrugated packing. A slurry of mixed particles is fed into the middle of the column. Water enters near the bottom of the column as both a steady state and a pulsating flow. The pulsating water sets up a jigging action that interacts with the packing causing the dense particles to sink and exit the bottom of the jig and the lighter particles to rise and exit the top of the packed jig. The result is a sharp, environmentally friendly, gravity separation machine with low operating costs. Grades and recoveries of iron ore exceed that of known devices. Grades as high as 95 percent purity with concomitantly high recoveries are common for iron ore concentration. Low silica, sulfur and phosphate are common. This paper is the first to unveil the packed column jig technology in detail and presents its physical model with performance data. The purification of iron ores and coal is the paper's focus.

There has been a long history of ironmaking on the North East coast of England centered around the River Tees. The industry developed here because of the availability of good coking coals to the North in Co. Durham, and the discovery in 1851 of ironstone in the nearby Cleveland Hills, South of the .River. Cleveland ironstone is relatively poor in quality, with an iron content not exceeding h% and high proportion of sulphur and phosphorous. The iron exists in chemical association with alumina and silica, and physical beneficiation processes involve a serious loss in iron unless the upgrading is limited, when the economics of the process become doubtful. Over the years, richer foreign ores have replaced the local ironstone, and the last operating mine was closed in 1964.

The Camp Dresser & McKee (CDM) has been retained by the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (SRCSD) to design the Mather Interceptor, a portion of the South Interceptor and Mather Interceptor program. The Mather Interceptor consists of 14,667 feet of 54 to 72 inch gravity interceptor. Approximately 90 percent of the alignment will be constructed via tunneling. Cobbles and boulders in a sand/gravel matrix dominate the ground conditions combined with seasonal perched groundwater table at some of the deeper reaches of the alignment, impacting design consideration. This paper will present the results of a comprehensive geotechnical investigation conducted for this project and in-depth technical evaluation of various trenchless techniques feasible for tunneling in the cobble and boulder laden formations of this project. This paper will also present the risks and issues of the design alternatives and selection criteria.

The Australian longwall mining industry spends millions of dollars per year on proactive and reactive ground consolidation applications across most of the operations currently in production. The design and effectiveness of the applications and products vary widely and are based predominantly on-site precedence or what were considered successful applications at other sites in similar situations. In the continual improve the effectiveness of how consolidation products are used and when by enhancing our knowledge of the mechanical properties of products used in underground coal applications and applying this increased understanding to geotechnical design. One of the current challenges to further developing more appropriate and accurate geotechnical design methods for consolidation activities is the lack of standardised materials testing and knowledge of rock mechanics data on in situ performance. The lack of industry standardisadesign of consolidation programs, with a reliance on experience-based guidance for rockmass consolidation design. consolidation products. The program was designed to provide the industry with a set of geomechanical property index tests and a data set that can be utilised by rock mechanics engineers as baseline information for product evaluation and engineering design. The laboratory work undertaken is critical to understanding the exact small-scale mechanical properties of these products and testing was carried out at Monash University for various states of curing of each product. Recognising that the speed at which a mixed product develops its desired properties to act as a support element in underground coal mines is critical to its serviceability. This paper presents the testing rationale proposed, the testing results, and a framework for how the data set can be used to improve the engineering basis for ground consolidation design, in terms of expected rockmass performance under various mining conditions and application parameters.

Integrating a research and development department into an engineering company's corporate structure can be rewarding to the engineering division, the R&D group, and, most of all, the company's clients. Actually, the R&D department is a logical extension of the conventional processing group within an engineering organization-but the R&D group provides services as needed to the engineering department while it is carrying out regular testing, pilot plant, and preliminary feasibility studies. Backup Services Provided With an R&D group, the engineering division does not need a process engineering group as such. The R&D group provides project backup services for feasibility studies, preliminary and detailed engineering, construction, and startup. The R&D group, in turn, benefits from its close association with project engineers, draftsmen, estimators, and computer capabilities in the engineering division. The client also benefits from the arrangement because R&D and engineering skills are available to both departments on an as-needed basis without standby eost. To handle the integrated responsibility of R&D projects, as well as conceptual design and preliminary feasibility studies, the R&D staff must be carefully selected. These research engineers should: • have a good background in plant practice as a mill superintendent or chief metallurgist; • be capable of organizing and supervising a testing program or a pilot plant campaign; •be innovative and willing to accept new ideas and concepts; • be able to translate lab test results into a workable flowsheet through sound conceptual design and feasibility studies; and •be able to communicate with clients. In short, the R&D engineer must be a jack of all process-engineering trades to successfully take a project from concept to operating reality. Ventilation is an expensive prerequisite for underground mining. Current mining trends, including increasing depth and mechanization and more stringent health regulations would generally dictate that more air volume is required in order to provide good working conditions underground. However, any increase in the mine’s intake airflow can produce a disproportionate increase in power consumption and hence operating costs due to the cubic relationship between the sup-plied air power and the airflow (Power a Flow3). Furthermore, forecasts of significant increase in energy prices and new commitments with regard to reductions of greenhouse gas(GHG) emissions, determined the mining industry to look into developing new concepts, design tools and incorporate the latest mining technologies in order to lower capital and operating costs while meeting commitments regarding GHG emissions. The advances in computing power and modelling software now make it possible to design, model and schedule a mine from opening to closure. A developing trend is to design and plan the mine by means of orebody modelling software, followed by using discrete-event simulation techniques to predict production rates and evaluate various operating scenarios throughout the life of the mine. The authors are currently evaluating how such process simulators could be adapted in order to forecast the need for materials or a specific resource, and one of these would be the mine’s “life-cycle” airflow demand as a function of scheduled production rates and mine operating characteristics. Further to this, based upon the mine’s life-cycle airflow demand schedule, the ventilation system could then be designed using a mine ventilation simulator. This new design approach would integrate in parallel the development of the ventilation system with the current mining conditions, therefore, heading towards “develop-as-you-go” as opposed to developing the system for final requirements with high upfront costs. This new ventilation system design criteria would also incorporate the use of the “ventilation-on-demand” technology, which will further lower development and production costs and implicitly, the mines’ GHG emissions.

The ST separator utilizes electrical charge differences between materials produced by surface contact or triboelectric charging. When two materials are in contact, material with a higher affinity for electrons gains electrons and thus charges negative, while material with lower electron affinity charges positive. This contact exchange of charge is universally observed for all materials, at times causing electrostatic nuisances that are a problem in some industries. Electron affinity is dependent on the chemical composition of the particle surface and will result in substantial differential charging of materials in a mixture of discrete particles of different composition. In the ST separator (Figures 1 and 2), material is fed into the thin gap 0.9 ? 1.5 cm (0.35 -0.6 in.) between two parallel planar electrodes. The particles are triboelectrically charged by inter-particle contact. For example, in the case of coal combustion fly ash, a mixture of carbon particles and mineral particles, the positively charged carbon and the negatively charged mineral are attracted to opposite electrodes. The particles are then swept up by a continuous moving open-mesh belt and conveyed in opposite directions. The belt moves the particles adjacent to each electrode toward opposite ends of the separator. The electric field need only move the particles a tiny fraction of a centimeter to move a particle from a left-moving to a right-moving stream. The counter current flow of the separating particles and continual triboelectric charging by carbon-mineral collisions provides for a multi-stage separation and results in excellent purity and recovery in a single-pass unit. The high belt speed also enables very high throughputs, up to 40 tonnes per hour on a single separator. By controlling various process parameters, such as belt speed, feed point, electrode gap and feed rate, the ST process produces low carbon fly ash at carbon contents of 2 % ± 0.5% from feed fly ashes ranging in carbon from 4% to over 30%.

"Methane hydrate is of interest as an alternative energy resource in Japan and the R&D program has been ongoing for ten years (MH21: http://www.mh21japan.gr.jp/english/). Rare-earth element-rich deep-sea mud (REE Mud) is also of interest as an alternative resource in Japan and an exploration program has been launched in 2013.For methane recovery from the hydrate, a depressurization method pumps up water in a production well and has been successfully applied in field production tests (MH21: http://www.mh21japan.gr.jp/english/). However, micro-bubbles, which appear in the hydrate dissociation and water recovery processes may present an environmental issue. It may stick on clay and silt particles that accompany the recovered water, and may disturb settling of the particles in the water separation tank. For exploitation of REE Mud, an air-lift system has been proposed in the feasibility study (Abe et al., 2012). The same micro-bubble issue is expected during the air, water, and mud particle separation processes. In this research, the authors conducted a preliminary tank experiment for clarifying the effect of micro-bubbles on settling behavior of fine kaolinite particles. The behavior was continuously recorded by a still camera and the images were analyzed by the gray scale intensity. From the results the authors found a suspension effect for the settling of fine particles as the result of micro-bubbles. The effect should be studied in detail for preventing some serious environmental impacts during deep-sea mining."

Recovery of iron and copper from acid mine drainage was studied in pilot scale at a continuous treatment plant at the mine site of the King's mine in Roeros, Norway. The average load on the plant was 1 m3/h. The process tested in this project is a three-step process consisting of: 1) Fe(OH)3 precipitation at pH 3.5, dewatering of iron sludge and transport to ferric chloride plant; 2) after filtration precipitation of residual metals at pH 9, concentration of metal sludge by flotation; 3) extraction of metals from the sludge with sulphuric acid followed by recovery of copper by electrolysis. The copper could be used for local production of different crafts, but this condition needs a further evaluation. The process economy at a full scale plant is evaluated.

Most mines are large producing 0-25 mmt annually. The coal is mine.) at depths ranging from .0-150 m 120-500 ft mining at 300 m .(,1000 ft) depth is anticipated in the future. Single and multiple seams ranging from 3-12 m 10-40 ft) in thickness are mined. Most overburden is unconsolidated and consists of sands, and sandy or silty clays. The stripping ratio (volume of overburden to volume of coal mined) varies from 3-L. The overburden and coal is mined in benches 8-12 m -(24-40ft) high; the high-wall angle is about 45 degrees. Bucket wheel and bucket chain excavators are commonly utilized for overburden and coal removal, Some of the large overburden stripping machines nave capacities. Ranging from 4400-10,000 bank cu ( 6000-14,000 BC) per hour. The overburden from the upper benches is transported around the pit using the trains and belt conveyors. It is deposited in the spoils using large stacker-conveyor systems capable of handling 2550-7300 cu m/hour (7500-10,000 cu yds/hour). The overburden from the bottom two or three benches is transported across the pit using the conveyor bridges which are computer controlled. Conveyor bridges capable of handling overburden up to 60 m (200 ft) high are currently in use; a 60 a (20e ft) high conveyor bridge has a capacity of 85 x 10 cu ( 118 x 10 cu yd) annually. The coal is loaded in the trains directly and shipped to power plants or coke oven plants.

Mine Development Associates, Inc. was formed in March of 1987 to provide mine engineering assistance to the mineral industry. To be competitive with other firms, Mine Development must be able to provide quick and accurate ore reserves and mine plans for clients. Commercially available mining software was necessary for Mine Development to assist the client. This paper describes how Mine Development chose mining software, the time involved in getting up to speed, and several case histories of how the software is used. Introduction Will cogeneration be a major power source in the future? The location of electric power generating plants has changed. In 1900, more than 50% of electricity was generated by industrial plants. Since then, industrial plant generation of electricity greatly decreased to 17% in 1950 and to only 3% in 1980. Changing economics in electric power generating costs, though, may allow cogeneration to reverse this trend. Cogeneration has been defined as the simultaneous production of electric (mechanical) and thermal energy from a single energy source. Some applications are considered to be byproduct generation of electricity from industrial, thermal operations. Cogeneration is not new to the mining and minerals industry. Smelters and steel mills have used waste heat to generate electricity. Public Utilities Regulatory Policies Act of 1978 The potential for increased industrial cogeneration of electricity is related to the March 9, 1978 enactment of the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act (PURPA). The US Supreme Court ruled that PURPA is constitutional. The court upheld requirements that utilities interconnect to cogenerators. It also ruled that 100% of avoided costs be used as the guideline for electricity sales by a qualifying facility (QF) to a utility. The state of New York established a floor price $0.06/kWh for electricity sales from a QF to a utility. It is obvious, then, that a cogenerator must first establish price and then become a qualifying facility in order to sell electricity to a utility. Proposed cogeneration plants The estimated industrial cogeneration potential for the years 1986 to 2000 is 9500 to 25,000 MW. Industries represented in this cogeneration estimate are pulp and paper, petroleum, chemicals, food, textiles, rubber, plastics, steel, lumber and wood, cement, glass, metal fabrication, and industrial parks. A cogeneration plant has been proposed for the Union Carbide chemical plant in Institute, WV. A steam turbine/generator would be installed to replace the pressure-reducing valve in the 2.7 MPa (400 psig) header. Scott Paper Co., Mobile, AL, proposed a cogeneration plant using a coal- and wood-fired boiler and a turbine/generator to produce process steam and electric power. A cogeneration system has been proposed for a large oil refining plant. A pulverized coal boiler would produce high-pressure steam to operate a turbine, generator. The exhaust steam from the turbine will go to the process and an existing turbine. Kansas City, MO's Armour meat-processing plant has proposed a cogeneration plant. This proposal is to use a natural gas or oil-fired, gas-driven turbine and a generator. The waste heat from the gas turbine would go to a heat recovery boiler for use as process heat. Dade County, FL is implementing a central energy system to supply electricity, air conditioning, and domestic hot water for five buildings in downtown Miami. The cogeneration system is to provide flexibility, to optimize fuel use efficiency while serving the variable thermal demands. Generation of electricity from municipal waste is not considered to be a cogeneration process but is covered by PURPA. Special considerations are provided for waste/electric power generation to encourage the development of these systems. ?

The paper presents a brief overview of the mineral industry in Norway, followed by a description of the mineral policy and relevant legislation including the roles of the Norwegian Directorate of Mining and Geological Survey of Norway in this context. The discussion then proceeds to describe the land use planning framework on a national, regional and local level, the interaction between land use planning and the Directorate of Mining and the Geological Survey respectively, and how this impacts on the mineral industry and the exploitation of mineral resources. Some recent Norwegian examples of land use planning conflicts are also presented.

Mining companies require accurate short-term mining forecasts to meet budget targets and customer needs. Challenging mining conditions along with employee turnover and lack of standard geologic modeling and mine planning processes can result in time-consuming and inconsistent mine plans. Documentation and automation of the processes involved in mine planning, as well as proper software utilization, are critical in overcoming these challenges. This paper discusses the steps involved in achieving an optimized mine planning system to accomplish productive and cost effective operations. In addition, a case study is included to describe the process of implementing a semi-automated system whereby the geologic model and mine scheduling database are updated monthly to incorporate changes in geology in a relatively complex open-pit coal mine. This case study proves that the ability to update geologic models based on the latest information gathered from production drilling and mining activities can greatly enhance the ability to accurately predict short-term mining production.

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently developed a series of validated models utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study the effects of air-blocking shelves on airflows and respirable dust distribution associated with mediumsized surface blasthole drill shrouds as part of a dry dust collector system. Using validated CFD models, three different air-blocking shelves were included in the present study: a 15.2-cm (6-in.)-wide shelf; a 7.6-cm (3-in.)-wide shelf; and a 7.6-cm (3-in.)-wide shelf at four different shelf heights. In addition, the dust-collector-to-bailing airflow ratios of 1.75:1, 1.5:1, 1.25:1 and 1:1 were evaluated for the 15.2-cm (6-in.)-wide air-blocking shelf. This paper describes the methodology used to develop the CFD models. The effects of air-blocking shelves and dust collector-to-bailing airflow ratios were identified by the study, and problem regions were revealed under certain conditions. IntroductionSurface blasthole drilling can generate considerable amounts of respirable silica dust. These high dust concentrations can be exacerbated by the high silica content as drilling cuts through silica-bearing materials such as sandstone and shale, causing overexposures for miners to respirable silica dust. These overexposures can lead to silicosis, an occupational lung disease that has no cure and is often fatal. A review of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) respirable silica dust sample database from 2010 to 2016 for metal/nonmetal mining shows the following overexposure rates for occupations related to blasthole drilling: • 14.1 percent of rotary air drillers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (22 out of 156 samples).• 5.8 percent of rotary drillers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (nine out of 155 samples).• 7.3 percent of drill helpers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (three out of 41 samples).• 7.5 percent of blasters/shotfirers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (three out of 40 samples)."
