The floodable volume of longwall gob can be of great importance in developing accurate coal mine operation plans, particularly for mine water management and environmental control strategies. Given the inaccessibility and difficulty in direct measurement of gob characteristics following gob recompression, hydrologic, geomechanical, and spatial data and principles were used to solve for the porosity and height of the residual gob using a mathematical model framework and bulking-based techniques. Based on this approach, gob porosity of Appalachian longwalls appears to be tighter than previously reported, ranging between 4.99 and 14.31%. Residual gob height, as normalized with respect to mine extraction height, ranges between 1.90 and 2.45. A novel, bedding-based bulking approach is ampliative with respect to existing roof caving and bulking fundamentals, as it has greater explanatory value compared with the traditional, lithologic-based bulking application. The efficacy of using the residual gob characteristics determined by the mathematical model and bedding-based bulking is examined using a causal comparative method, whereby time series prediction of historical groundwater rebound is compared with observed mine pool elevation data. Prediction accuracy is significantly improved using a prototype model to calculate void volume of longwall gob, specifically, the dependence of porosity of the gob material upon the longwall width to overburden depth ratio for movement basins of subcritical and critical panel widths. The potential implication of these findings toward hydrologic, geomechanical, and ventilation studies of longwall gob could be significant.

The world market for bunkers represents some 140 MT (1980) of marine fuel oil and distillates. This is equivalent to 23CMT of coal, a potential market for steam coal larger than the total seaborne trade of steam and metallurgical coal today, and an obvious area which could contribute savings in world oil consumption. Oil bunkers are lifted fairly evenly throughout the world, the main supplying regions being Western Europe, the Middle East, North and Central America and Japan (Figure 1). Not surprisingly, the main customers are the tankers representing about 50 percent of the world market - (95 percent of the Middle East Market) - dry bulkers represent some 30 percent and general cargo ships the rest.

Acid-Minesite-Solutions (AMS) are defined as copper-containing pit lake, tailing pond, acid-mine-drainage, and heap and waste dump irrigation solutions. All of these solutions are characterized by copper, acid and water contents that have value as individual commodities. HW Process Technologies, Inc. (HWPT) has developed nano- and hyper-filtration membrane methods for the separation of copper and other base metals, acid and water from AMS. These treatments are collectively called HWPT?s Engineered Membrane Separation® (EMS®) systems. The EMS® method of copper recovery produces small volumes of higher-concentration copper solution from large-volume, copper-dilute AMS. A case study of the 4,000 gpm Cananea EMS®-AMS plant for the recovery of copper from an acid-pit-lake resource is described. The EMS® method of copper removal from AMD and tails pond waters has been bench-scale demonstrated and are described, complete with projected budgetary capital and operating costs. Additional treatments for the recovery of sulfuric acid and high-quality water from the permeate (membrane passing) waters for the above-described AMS treatments are presented, with budgetary capital and operating cost estimates. The Ohio River Tunnel is the first of three combined sewer overflow tunnels to be constructed under Allegheny County Sanitary Authority's Clean Water Plan. The project consists of a total of approximately 5.5 miles of 18-ft and 14-ft finished diameter, segmentally lined deep rock tunnels and smaller diameter dewater and flow connector tunnels, as well as 8 deep flow drop and access shafts varying from 25-ft to 70-ft in finished diameter and 130-ft to 170-ft in depth. This paper describes the project components and the primary engineering challenges faced during design, including tunnel alignments and shaft site optimization with tight right-of-way constraints and multiple railroad and highway crossings. Assessment of tunneling methodology as well as tunnel and shaft designs and constructability included overcoming 5-bar hydrostatic pressure, abrasive bedrock, and the selection of the appropriate support of excavation systems in high-permeability alluvial soils adjacent to the Ohio River.

Many processes in the hydrometallurgical and chemical industries require the separation of dissolved material from suspended solids. Counter current decantation (CCD) with thickeners is one of the methods generally used. The process engineer needs a quick and accurate CCD calculation method. Several theoretical 1-12 CCD calculation methods are available in the literature . The simultaneous 1, 2 equation method for a complex circuit as used would take too long to solve the problems. Approximate equation method1 is not accurate and is for simple cases only. A shortcut method developed by Counselman3 contains no mathematical equation, and thus is not suitable for computer programming. Based on Counselman's method, Woody4 derived two simple equations in terms of percent soluble loss for two typical examples. Scandrett5 included a term for mixing in his formulas. This mixing efficiency was defined by Murphree6. Another method which depends on making volume calculations instead of using weights is presented by Mastin8 and Cahalan9. None of these methods is related to dissolution and pre¬cipitation reactions. Chen 10,11 demonstrated his methods for counter current leaching. His results are calculated from the general solution of a derived linear difference equation for constant underflow, and from the solution of a derived non-linear Ricatti difference equation for variable underflow. This paper concerns derivation of a general equation for CCD washing with provisions for adding and withdrawing the streams, and for leaching (dissolution) or precipitation reactions. The aim of this study is to synthesize hydrated compounds of calcium silicate (tobermorite) using as siliceous source perlite milling process wastes, containing more than 70% of SiO2. Calcium silicate hydrates are mainly used for construction of lightweight building materials, plasters, tiles and filters. The effect of temperature, time and particle size of perlite on the quality and composition of the solid product was studied. The solid products were characterized by X-ray Diffractometry, Differential Thermal Analysis and the amount of Acid Insoluble Residue. The synthesis of tobermorite was per-formed by the hydrothermal treatment of perlite waste with a saturated calcium hydroxide solution at a molar ratio CaO/SiO2 of 1, liquid to solid ratio 10 mL/g and 1% w.t. NaOH addition. Three experimental sets were performed. In the first series of experiments the synthesis temperature was kept constant at 205°C while the synthesis time varied from 0.5 h to 24 h. In the second experimental series the synthesis time was kept constant at 2 h while the temperature varied between 150°C and 245°C. In the third experimental set the temperature was 205°C and the reaction time was 2 hours and two perlite waste size fractions were used, a coarse (d50=18 µm) and a fine grained one (d50=8 µm). Reaction products consisted of semicrystalline calcium silicate hydrate (I) and crystalline Al-substituted tobermorite or a mixture of both. An isomorphic Si4+ ions substitution with Al3+ ions in the hydrated calcium silicate lattice was detected by thermal analysis. The experimental results show that good quality crystalline Al-tobermorite can be produced after 6 hours of autoclaving at 205°C or after 2 hours of hydro-thermal treatment at 225°C. Generally, the in-crease of synthesis temperature or time favors the crystallization of calcium silicate phases and enriches them in aluminum. The use of fine grain size perlite is more efficient for the hydrothermal synthesis of calcium silicate hydrates.

The North Singhbhum Mobile Belt (NSMB) lies between two crustal-scale shear zones, the South Purulia Shear Zone (SPSZ) at the north, and the Singhbhum Shear Zone (SSZ) at the south. The Babaikundi-Birgaon Axis (BBA) is an east-west trending secondary shear zone in the NSMB lying south of SPSZ, which is known for the occurrence of gold along with other sulfide minerals within the quartz reefs. The present study has been carried out at north of Ichadih village, which lies on the BBA. The present study attempts combined electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and self-potential methods along a profile of 470-m length in the Ichadih area to map the potential mineralized zones. Initially, ERT sections generated by Wenner, Wenner- Schlumberger, dipole-dipole, and joint inversion of the combined array have been analyzed, and results are validated through the analysis of model resolution. A prominent low resistivity (10–100 Ωm) associated with quartz reef/limonitic quartz reef at a depth of approximately 30–85 m, encircled by a high resistive (more than 10,000 Ωm) formation associated with metasedimentary rock, has been delineated using joint inversion of the combined array. Further, analysis of self-potential (SP) anomaly using particle swarm optimization inversion also confirms the prominent low SP anomaly at a depth of 77.3 m, which is analogous to the low resistivity anomaly identified in the joint inversion of the combined geo-electric array. Subsequent analysis of a complex synthetic geo-electrical model analogous to the present field situation proves the efficacy of the joint inversion of combined arrays. As a whole, joint inversion of multi-array data is established as an efficient technique for better subsurface imaging in case of the complex subsurface structure. In-depth analyses confirm the possibility of sulfide mineral-rich deposit (quartz reef/limonitic quartz reef) which requires further geological drilling and lithogeochemical sample analysis, for possible future exploration.

In the U.S. today a number of tentative synthetic fuel plants have been sited by a number of major corporations. Each of these for a number of reasons have deferred construction. The only synthetic fuel plants under active development are those being built with the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) under the authority of the Non-nuclear Energy Research and Development Act of 1974 (Public Law 93-577). Under this Act in joint sponsorship with industry, a series of coal conversion pilot and demonstration plants are being built to produce environmentally acceptable fuels from high sulfur coals. Before entering into a discussion of the factors associated with the siting of the ERDA coal conversion program, the difference between a pilot plant and a demonstration plant should be explained. The terms pilot plant and demonstration plant iridicate a size of plant rahter than technology. A pilot plant will vary from an "add-on" to an existing facility to an independent unit. Demonstration plants are a wholly independent, self contained plants, capable of independent operation to demonstrate the environmenta1, economic, and technica1 feasibility of a technology. These plants are from one-third to one-tenth the scale of a commercial operation and often described as plus 1000 tons per day of coal consumption. Their purpose is stated in the Act (Section 6, (3)(E),) "to accelerate the commercial demonstration of technologies for producing syncrude and liquid petroleum products from coal: Provided. That the Administrator shall invite and consider proposals from potential participants based upon Federal assistants and participation through guaranteed prices or purchase of the products .... " In site selection and plant design it has been suggested that special interest groups should be allowed to dictate the site and specify the design. He worked at the Falconbridge in Sudbury area, also at Brenda Mines, and then he became part of the Brenda Process Technology group in British Columbia. He joined Freeport in late 1993 in Indonesia, and was involved in process control and automation. He is now the senior manager of metallurgy in New Orleans. He's responsible for designing Freeport's new 100,000-ton-per-day expansion concentrator, which is currently being commissioned. Please welcome Andrew. ANDREW NEALE: With the ongoing explosion in digital computing power, there seems to be no limit to what can be modeled, simulated, and controlled in the mineral processing plant. However, at each stage of development of a control system, it is necessary to complete a cost-benefit analysis for justifying the move to a higher level of control. Incremental improvements in plant performance, while often significant, must be weighed against the costs of implementation and long-term maintenance. This presentation will provide examples of what the author believes are misplaced or misguided process control efforts and make a case for the KISS principle as applied to process control.

The Robbins Company has developed a boring machine, with a rubber packer serving as the gripper system, for blind boring of raises without using drill pipe. This machine is the BorPak and has many applications for use in the mining industry which will improve productivity. In addition to the cost savings, the boring method will lead to increased safety in constructing blind raises. The advantages of using the BorPak in a mining environment will be discussed together with possible applications.

Early identification of adverse geologic conditions and high stress concentrations during the high-speed extraction of coal using modern mechanized long wall systems is a major challenge facing the mining industry. Often, unexpected geologic anomalies that affect rock mass quality are encountered more rapidly, leaving the mine operator with insufficient time or information to deal with the changing ground conditions. The RockVision3DTM seismic tomographic system, developed by NSA Engineering, Inc., offers substantial benefits over conventional geologic/stress-detection methods and has been used successfully in coal mines worldwide. Tomographic images, produced economically and in near-real time, are easy to interpret, allowing mine operators to deal with potential hazards on a day-to-day basis. This paper focuses on the application of RockVision3DTM technology for delineating hazards caused by stress and geologic anomalies. Case studies for two bump-prone coal mines will be discussed. For example, (1) in a German deep (>1,130 m) mine, the drilling-yield method was used to verify the effectiveness of this technology in detecting stress anomalies ahead of longwalling; (2) in a Polish mine (-500 m deep), two longwall panels 4 km apart were monitored to assess structural and stress-related factors contributing to differences in mining conditions and magnitude of structural failures.

Minpro International has developed an innovative, flexible¬shaft impact crusher that produces glass aggregate from mixed¬color, post-consumer glass. The crusher operates with low power and generates a subangular aggregate, with minimal fines. Output is screened to yield sized aggregate, which can be used directly as surfacing material in Owens Corning's shingle process. Metal, plastic and paper waste is preferentially removed by the Minpro system. Duval County and the City of Jacksonville collect more than 12,000 tons of glass bottle waste per year. It is anticipated that a successful end-use application by Owens Corning, will allow increased collection and cost-effective glass recycling in north Florida.

The longwall simulator is a design simulator incorporating both deterministic and stochastic methods to calculate: (a) the size and density of support; (b) the cutting force, power requirements and haulage speed for the loader-shearer; (c) the conveyor size, speed and power requirements; and (d) delay generation at head and tail-gates and the longwall face.

Understanding the energy-size reduction relationship is vital to grinding process; therefore, this paper aims to show the energy-size reduction of magnetite-calcite binary mixture in a laboratory wet conical ball mill. Single magnetite, single calcite, and blended magnetite-calcite mixture at three weight ratios in four particle sizes were ground in a laboratory wet conical ball mill at four grinding time periods. The results showed that the particle size distribution of both fine particles and coarse particles of single and mixture ground product fitted well with the PSD computed by Rosin–Rammler-Benne function. The larger mass percentage of calcite is, the higher t10 of binary mixture ground product is. On the contrary, t10 in the mixture decreases as the percentage of magnetite in the mixture increases. The different breakage behaviors in blended samples are due to the hardness and particle size. The results of calculated ratio of energy absorption factor showed that the calcite consumed more energy in the breakage process of binary mixture than ground alone. The JK size-dependent breakage model based on the t10 method fits all the experiment data, be it generated from pure minerals, mixtures at different weight ratios, or each component separated from the mixture.

After the merger of Newmont and Santa Fe Pacific Gold, Newmont created significant synergies of over $50million per year in Nevada, primarily through optimal ore movements and consolidation of various functions. During the current period of low gold and copper prices, Newmont has refocused its efforts on efficient operations worldwide. This paper will describe the methods and programs that continue to be implemented at Newmont's many mine facilities in Nevada. Newmont has used a combination of computer technology, optimal use of infrastructures, procurement strategies, functional consolidation, enhanced mine planning and a variety of available metallurgical processing options to decrease the cost of operations and increase profitability.

Leaching titaniferous magnetite concentrate with alkali solution of high concentration under high temperature and high pressure was utilized to improve the grade of iron in iron concentrate and the grade of TiO2 in titanium tailings. The titaniferous magnetite concentrate in use contained 12.67% TiO2 and 54.01% Fe. The thermodynamics of the possible reactions and the kinetics of leaching process were analyzed. It was found that decomposing FeTiO3 with NaOH aqueous solution could be carried out spontaneously and the reaction rate was mainly controlled by internal diffusion. The effects of water usage, alkali concentration, reaction time, and temperature on the leaching procedure were inspected, and the products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and energy dispersive spectroscopy, respectively. After NaOH leaching and magnetic separation, the concentrate, with Fe purity of 65.98% and Fe recovery of 82.46%, and the tailings, with TiO2 purity of 32.09% and TiO2 recovery of 80.79%, were obtained, respectively.

Comingling filtered tailings and waste rock in a tailingsdominated mixture is a mine waste management strategy that has the potential to create geotechnically and geochemically stable landforms. Potentially acid-generating (PAG) waste rock can be sequestered within a filtered tailings matrix to enhance water retention and decrease hydraulic conductivity relative to a waste rock pile, potentially minimizing acid rock drainage (ARD). Enhanced water retention can reduce oxygen ingress limiting oxidation and resultant acid generation. Reduced hydraulic conductivity can slow inward percolation and outward drainage. In dry climates, the tailings matrix can hold precipitation near the ground surface accessible to evaporation and transpiration, thereby decreasing percolation. This paper presents an evaluation of comingled filtered tailings and waste rock in a tailings-dominated mixture (termed GeoWaste herein) and illustrates that ARD can be reduced under field conditions in a subtropical–highland climate.

"Everyone has a general idea what mixing means, but describing the mixing process is not so simple. The objective of any mixing process is to distribute and blend the materials with different characteristics, different quantities as evenly as possible resulting in a homogenous mixture. Introducing proportional movement with the optimal intensity into the materials achieves effective homogeneous mixing results. A simple one directional movement with inadequate acceleration of the materials would obviously not achieve the same mixing results. This would be more like stirring than mixing. The amount of relative movement that is introduced is a decisive factor. Circumstances for successful mixing involve distribution of all materials, and achieving the highest probability that all recipe particles located in a specific position at the beginning can be found at any random location in the mixing chamber at the end of the process. This is the only way to ensure that a consistent result is achieved every time mixing is repeated.THREE-PART CYCLE The mixing cycle occurs in three phases; charging the mixer, the mixing process, and discharging. The sequence in which the individual materials to be mixed are filled into the mixer can have a huge impact on the efficiency of the mixing cycle. The mixing cycle overlaps the charging process and the discharge cycle follows the mixing cycle. To achieve optimum results, effective discharging methods should be taken into consideration to avoid risks of segregation. Costs for energy and wear should be as low as possible and finally, it is very important that the mixing cycle takes place as quickly as possible. In concrete or paste backfill production, selecting the best mixing technology is crucial for both the quality of the final product to be blended and the efficiency of the production process. The optimum mixing system is one that rapidly disperses all ingredients evenly throughout the mixing trough and completely surrounds all the course or fine aggregate particles with the slurry cement particles. Specific for paste production it’s the mixers job to also break-down unconditioned tailings to achieve consistent paste viscosity or measured spread. Many paste and concrete formulas also involve small quantities of chemical additives which also must be evenly distributed effectively. The time required per mixing cycle as well as the costs of energy, wear and maintenance will determine the economy of the concrete production."

The major cost in comminution is energy consumption, which can be as high as 50% of the operating cost. Improvements in plant operations have resulted in up to a 15% reduction in energy usage (kw-hr/t). These improvements have been made through the optimization of grinding efficiency and the use of expert model-based control systems. Optimization involves the determination of the levels of the critical-operating conditions that result in the most efficient breakage of ore in the mill. These optimal levels are identified through plant/laboratory test work and through computer simulation using advanced process models. Model-based expert control achieves the maximum performance from the grinding circuit by identifying the characteristics of the ore in the mill with an optimal on-line estimator. Using this information, the control system dynamically determines the operating point that will yield the optimal performance. Two industrial applications of grinding-circuit optimization and model-based control are presented to demonstrate the power of this new technology.
