The estimation of local recoveries, such as the local recovered tonnage of ore and its corresponding grade at a given cutoff grade, is an important problem in a selective mining operation. Multigaussian kriging provides a simple solution to this specific problem. The solution is also complete in the sense that local recoveries are estimated together with their estimation variances. It is thus possible to assess confidence limit intervals on the estimated recoveries. Multigaussian kriging has been applied to the Jerritt Canyon deposit in a most realistic situation. The various steps of the estimation procedure are presented in detail and the potential of the method is demonstrated in view of the results. The obtained results show that the estimated recoveries are in good agreement with the actual recoveries and the actual estimation errors are correctly predicted by the estimation variances. Multigaussian kriging thus appears as a useful and fully operationable tool for the mining industry.

The demand for rare earth elements for everyday technology and applications has initiated much research into the extraction and recovery of these rare earth elements. An otherwise unknown group of minerals, eudialyte is a zircon silicate consisting of rare earth oxides (REO), contained in a unique mineral structure and represented by a complex chemical formula. Research into extraction and recovery of rare earth elements involves various beneficiation and hydrometallurgical techniques. The goal of beneficiation being to efficiently liberate and upgrade the REO content, followed by hydrometallurgy to extract the desired elements. This overview will discuss previous research on treating eudialyte group minerals via different mineral processing and extraction techniques.

In this study, the formation of zeolites around Kizkapan and Karlikoy villages (Sothwest Kesan) were investigated. In this region, stratigrafically, Upper Eocene Kesan Formation, i.e. sandstone and rarely shale are observed at the bottom. Early Middle-Oligocene Yenimuhacir Formation is composed of sandstone, marl and tuffs. The zeolitisation is determined in the dasitic tuffs of the Yenimuhacir Formation. In this tuffs' zone, alteration had primarily resulted in zeolites, mainly mordenite, heulandite-clinoptiIolite. Silicification and alteration to clay minerals are also common. The Miocene-Pliocene Ergene Formation and alluvium deposits are the top units in the area. In the studied area, zeolite occurences have economic importance. The results show that successively rapid and short term periods are responsible for the clinoptilolite-heuylandite formations. The homogene chemistry of the solutions may be evaluated for a possible successive zeolitisation period. Multi-periodic vocanic activity and also circulation of thermal water had resulted in a continous dissolution of volcanic glass; moreover, resulted in the formation of suitable conditions of zeolite formation. The mineral crystallization sequences and alteration products as zeolites within the wall-rock, circulated solution reaction depends on a serie of parameters such as chemical composition of both initial materials and volcanic solutions during rock¬solution interaction period. The previous researches and the chemical studies support our results and observations in the studied area. The aim of this study is to investigate the presence of zeolitisation and to explain the formation steps of zeolitisation in Kesan Area by considering the content and distribution of major and minor elements determined in zeolite bearing tuffs. The chemical structures of both zeolite bearing volcanics and zeolite minerals are compared to the results of previous studies. Two dimentional behaviours of major and minor elements were discussed in order to caracterize zeolitisation development and to postulate a probable formation type of zeolitic alteration.

Indicator simulation allows specification of different continuity of high and low values through the use of grade thresholds. The sequential implementation of indicator simulation has been widely used, but the problem of order relation deviations remains a significant drawback. A new procedure for "Hierarchical Indicator Simulation" is introduced that avoids order relations and offers greater flexibility than the conventional sequential approach. The new implementation simulates all locations at the largest threshold and then considers decreasing thresholds in turn. All nodes with grades that are above the previous threshold are excluded from the domain of the current threshold and therefore, they are not used as conditioning data. The probability of being above or below the threshold is calculated using simple indicator kriging using all conditioning data in the domain, thus the covariance structure is preserved. The theoretical framework of this new approach is fully developed. Practical implementation details are discussed. Application to a copper deposit shows the advantages and drawbacks of the method. Finally, the possibility of incorporating multiple-point statistics is discussed.

The combination of froth flotation and hydraulic classification can facilitate the production of a high-quality pozzolan that meets or exceeds ASTM specifications. This combination has been rigorously evaluated and results of pilot-scale testing are presented. Pilot-scale testing was conducted on fly ash from two active electric utility storage ponds. The tests demonstrated that a high-quality and consistent pozzolan could be produced using Advanced Pozzolan Technologies' Fast Float™ Process. Along with the pozzolan, the additional production of aggregate for masonry mortar and the production of a low sulfur, medium-Btu fuel were also demonstrated. The Fast Float™ Process incorporates several simple unit processes to ensure pozzolan consistency. Classification controls the particle size distribution, which is critical for achieving early strength;flotation controls the grade with respect to L.O.I.; and dewatering controls the moisture content.

Oxide copper was discovered in 1946 at Guelb Moghrein. Early work culminated in the construction in 1970, by a consortium headed by the Anglo American group, of a project producing copper concentrates from 1,000,000 tonnes per annum of oxide ore. The process used was the TORCO (Treatment Of Refractory Copper Ores) process, which reduced oxide copper minerals to elemental copper by roasting in fluidised beds at 800°C with salt and coal. The roaster product was then floated to yield a high grade smelter concentrate, which was exported. The project closed in 1976, due to low copper prices and increased energy prices, leaving an open pit, the old TORCO plant, a water pipeline, and more than 2,000,000 tonnes of tail­ings, which contained remnant copper, as well as an average of 3 git of gold. After several attempts to recommence operations at Akjoujt, recovery of gold from the old TORCO tailings was started in 1992 by a joint venture company known as MORAK (Mines d'Or d'Akjoujt). This company comprises General Gold Resources N.L. of Australia, who are the managing partner, SAMlN (La Societe Arabe des Mines d'Inchiri) and the International Finance Corporation. Because the tailings are high in copper (0.1-0.3% Cu), the project used the 'Hunt' process, which uses a combination of cyanide and ammonia to leach gold while suppressing copper extraction. The gold is recovered from leach liquor by carbon absorption.

"The Pittsburgh Mining Research Division of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently developed a series of models using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study airflows and respirable dust distribution associated with a mediumsized surface blasthole drill shroud with a dry dust collector system. Previously run experiments conducted in NIOSH’s full-scale drill shroud laboratory were used to validate the models. The setup values in the CFD models were calculated from experimental data obtained from the drill shroud laboratory and measurements of test material particle size. Subsequent simulation results were compared with the experimental data for several test scenarios, including 0.14 m3/s (300 cfm) and 0.24 m3/s (500 cfm) bailing airflow with 2:1, 3:1 and 4:1 dust collector-tobailing airflow ratios. For the 2:1 and 3:1 ratios, the calculated dust concentrations from the CFD models were within the 95 percent confidence intervals of the experimental data. This paper describes the methodology used to develop the CFD models, to calculate the model input and to validate the models based on the experimental data. Problem regions were identified and revealed by the study. The simulation results could be used for future development of dust control methods for a surface mine blasthole drill shroud. IntroductionIn surface mines, production drilling is an essential process in blasting to fracture the hard rock overburden for removal. During the process, considerable amounts of respirable dust are produced. Past sampling at the shroud area of blasthole drills had documented time-weighted-average respirable dust concentrations ranging from 8.68 to 95.15 mg/m3 (Organiscak and Page, 1995) and 1.04 to 52.30 mg/m3 (Listak and Reed, 2007). These high dust concentrations, which may contain silica, can lead to respirable dust overexposures for the miners working nearby. These overexposures can lead to silicosis, an occupational lung disease that has no cure and is ultimately fatal.Two basic methods are used to control drilling dust: a wet suppression system or a dry collection system (Cecala et al., 2012). Dry drilling techniques using a dust collection system are preferred in rural mining locations where a constant water supply is not available, and in the case of rotary drilling where water is associated with accelerated bit wear due to bearing degradation and hydrogen embrittlement. In addition, dry drilling eliminates freezing-related issues with water in colder climates. Dry dust collectors are highly effective at removing dust, especially the finer material, as long as they are properly operated and maintained (Listak and Reed, 2007; Organiscak and Page, 2005)."

Chlorite veins in the Silver Star district (40 km southeast of Butte) were of little interest to those who were mining gold and silver in the late 19th century. It wasn't until 1975 that unusually pure magnesian chlorite of the variety clinochlore was identified from a ?talc? claim in this district. In 1977 tests by Cyprus Industrial Minerals showed that this chlorite was suitable for use in ceramics. Mining begun in that year continues. These replacement veins of chlorite in Precambrian quartzofeldspathic gneiss differ from the metalliferous veins to the northwest in both attitude and mineralogy.

Electrolytic manganese residue (EMR) is a kind of industrial solid waste with high silicon content that contains harmful metal elements such as chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni) and cobalt (Co). Developing a highly effective and environmentally friendly process to treat EMR is important, both for the reutilization of metal resources and for environmental sustainability. In this study, the bioleaching of available silicon from EMR using silicate bacteria is investigated, with flask experiments conducted to optimize the parameters in the bioleaching system. For metal ions, the concentrations of manganese (Mn), Co, Ni and Pb in solution were measured to determine the environmental safety effects before and after bioleaching. The results show that the bioleaching rates of available silicon in the slag were mainly affected by the temperature, pH and pulp density. Under the optimal conditions of temperature of 30 °C, pH of 7.0, pulp density of 5 percent, shake flask rotational speed of approximately 210 rpm, particle size of approximately 0.150 mm and leaching time of 16 d, the concentrations of available silicon in the bioleaching system rose to approximately 110 to 140 mg/L. The metals remaining in the residues were mainly bonded in stable fractions, with concentrations lower in the leachate after bioleaching. This study demonstrates that silicate bacteria can be used to increase the contents of available silicon from EMR, and that bioleaching technology can realize the harmless resource utilization of EMR.

I truly free enterprise system requires free and unrestricted competition among a diversity of suppliers, in order to function properly. The natural attrition of the marketplace tends on the one hand to narrow the competitive field ... but the flow of new competitors entering the arena provides a "diluting" effect, and a "balanced" market place. Without the ready flow of new business entrants, the market becomes increasingly concentrated in the hands of fewer and. fewer firms. Competition among suppliers is diminished and the "free" marketplace suffers accordingly. A number of organizations, both governmental and private, have recently expressed grave con¬cern over the competitive future of the Western coal market. While most have noted that there is currently adequate competition within the Western market, some have cited the growing con¬centration of coal ownership ... particularly federal lease ownership ... in the hands of a relatively few firms. They suggest that unless this apparent trend is reversed or at least stemmed, the number of new firms entering the federally-dominated West may become reduced to the point where competition will suffer.

This paper describes and demonstrates the application of systems analysis and mathematical modeling techniques in the planning of actual tunnel projects and research and development to improve tunneling techniques. A recently completed tunnel project located in Utah is used as an example. Although cost estimating computer programs are used in tunnel project planning, the introduction of performance modeling, simulating the time to excavate, has added advantages that are explored here. The performance/cost tunneling model (TM) described herein mathematically simulates on a high-speed digital computer the important activities of a number of tunneling techniques accounting for activity interactions, variable external environments, mechanical failure, and other uncertainties. A cost accounting segment is included to facilitate cost-effectiveness comparisons. It is shown that, when combined with informed judgment and appreciation of limitations, the TM can be a useful tool that may help improve tunneling operations and cost estimation, for example, by achieving more balanced system designs or bounding the performance/cost implications of geologic and other uncertainties. Ultimately, this might lead to more competitive bids and greater profits. The need for systems analysis and modeling in tunneling research and development (R&D) is well recognized and documented.(1-5) In R&D one must seek broadly useful solutions to the basic problems of face fragmentation, materials handling, ground support, and environmental control. These solutions must take account of the interdependence of these elements and, for a variety of ground conditions, the limitations or constraints that any innovation in one element may impose on total system performance and cost. It was the first plant worldwide to use gearless drives for both applications.The gearless principleThe principal idea behind a gearless drive system is to reduce the number of components and diversity of parts, especially those components that are at the edge of current manufacturing or power limits are eliminated. The used equipment provides the possibility to scale up and increase the power transmitted to the driven machine. This finally results in a possible increase of throughput respectively transported or processed material.In order to apply this principle of simplification, the components of a conventional drive system are examined. "HISTORY Tube bundle systems have been used in the coal mining industry for gas detection since the 1960’s. At the time there were developments were underway for improved gas monitoring systems. The primary gas detection systems in use were the flame safety lamp, colorimetric stain tubes and the taking of samples for analysis by gas chromatography. The MSA D6 hand held methanometer was approved in the UK for statutory methane measurements in 1972 and became very popular due to its smallness and simplicity of use. In 1973 Sieger Limited also developed a BM1 methanometer which could be installed underground and relay methane concentrations to the surface. Similar developments were underway for carbon monoxide detection and one was developed in 1982 by the Yorkshire Regional Laboratory of the NCB commercial development was undertaken by Sieger Limited who named it the ‘SCO1’. The UNOR 1 carbon monoxide and methane analyzers were approved for underground use in the United Kingdom in the late 1960’s.5 The technique was developed by Dr Luft of Bergbau-Forschung Essen and the equipment was manufactured by Maihak in Germany. The apparatus was flame proof and provided an intrinsically safe output which allowed the result to be telemetered to the surface through colliery communication systems. Both analyzers work on the same principal and each of the gases adsorb a certain wavelengths of infrared radiation. The detector measures the residual transmitted radiation and determines the percentage of gas present in the sample. These flameproof versions had proven to be robust and reliable. The UNOR 1 had been used in the Saar region of Germany and Scotland in the UK. The development of tube bundles for hydraulic controls enabled the development of the tube bundle gas monitoring systems we know today. A bundle of tubes are taken underground through a shaft, a borehole or drift then distributed to the required monitoring points. This enabled the ongoing monitoring of the underground environment when the power was isolated at 1.25% CH4. In 1972 the United Kingdom (UK) National Coal Board (NCB) produced a hand book for tube bundle systems which was subsequently updated in 1974. This is a useful guideline into the operational aspects of tube bundles systems at coal mines6. Many of the processes identified are being followed today. The United State Bureau of Mines (USBM) prepared a circular similar to the NCB handbook on tube bundle systems.7 The circular was prepared by Litton C and it was targeted at the design criteria for tube bundle the systems. The circular also states that “pneumatic monitoring systems can be used to monitor for hazards that develop quite quickly”."

Two recent US Bureau of Mines studies evaluated workers' dust exposures in automated pallet loading processes. The first study involved a Bureau designed dust control system using a push-pull ventilation technique. The unit was shown to reduce workers' dust exposures by 76% during pallet loading at a ground silica operation. A hydraulic lift table was used to automate the bag stacking process. This kept the loading height constant throughout the entire pallet loading cycle. The second study evaluated different commercial, automated-pallet loading systems. These systems automatically stack the bags onto pallets, shrink wrap the pallets, and deliver the pallets to a fork lift pickup location. Results from a ground silica evaluation site indicated respirable dust samples taken were below the Threshold Limit Value (TLV) as established by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).

Manufacturers have improved various stirred mill types to be well adapted to fine and ultrafine grinding applications. These stirred mills, which are operated in wet or dry conditions, may be classified as horizontal — such as AHM-horizontal agitated media mill, IsaMill and Drais mill — or vertical — such as tower mill, Vertimill, Maxmill, Stirred Media Detritor and ATR vertical agitated media mill. The main difference between vertical and horizontal structures is in their operational variations. Additionally, the scaling-up of mills is also an important parameter for selecting the suitable orientation [1]. The purpose of this study was to investigate the dry grindability of calcite powders in a vertically and horizontally orientable laboratory batch-type stirred mill. The experimental results were evaluated using stress intensity analysis. The results showed that the d50 values decreased with increasing stress energy down to a certain point and then increased for both milling orientations. Even though the optimum stress energies for both vertical and horizontal orientations were in the range of 1 × 10−3 to 5 × 10−3 Nm at 750 and 1,500 kJ/kg energy consumption, the product size was finer for the horizontal orientation at the same stress energy value.

The oxygen-rich bath smelting process of copper dross was simulated using Factsage software. It was found that the two-step simulation results agreed better with the industrial data, especially in the speiss. Bi, Pb, Sb, As, and Cu contents in the speiss by two-step simulation differed from the industrial data by 0.6 wt.%, 0.8 wt.%, 2.6 wt.%, 7.2 wt.%, and 8.6 wt.%, respectively. Twostep simulation results indicated that the speiss partitioning of Sb, As, and Cu increased from 60.1%, 32.3%, and 27.5%to 81.6%, 67.8%, and 47.2%, respectively, with the smelting temperature increasing from 1050 °C to 1250 °C. While the metal partitioning of Sb and Cu increased from 0% and 2.7% to 15.2% and 13.3%, respectively, with the separation temperature increasing from 400 °C to 700 °C.

"Molybdenum recovery by solvent extraction has gained interest partly due to advances in concentrate leach technology. Historically, both molybdenum and rhenium have been produced using amine-based extractants with the ability to co-extract both metals. Alternatively, a phosphinic acid-based extractant (CYANEX® 600) can be used depending on the flow sheet. CYANEX® 600 selectively extracts Mo leaving Re in the raffinate, which is a valuable feature in plants which require rejection of the rhenium from the molybdenum circuit. CYANEX® 600 piloting results are reviewed and compared to commercial experiences with an amine-based extractant. INTRODUCTION Molybdenum is most commonly found as molybdenite (MoS2) in primary porphyry deposits (about 59% of global reserves) and copper porphyries (about 39% of molybdenum reserves)[1]. Recovery from molybdenite traditionally involves flotation (concentrates typically containing 85 – 95% MoS2) followed by roasting to produce MoO3. Solvent extraction is also used to recover molybdenum from acidic aqueous solutions resulting from scrubbing of roaster and smelter off gasses and leaching of molybdenite (uranium ores). Molybdenum is also frequently found in low concentrations in copper leach inventories[2]. More recently, pressure oxidation has gained interest to treat molybdenite concentrates. Molybdenum Chemistry The chemistry of molybdenum is complex with a series of extractable species existing dependent on the pH and oxidation state as shown in Figure 1.Under strongly basic conditions, molybdenum primarily exists as MoO42- while under strongly acidic conditions MoO22+ becomes the predominant species. In between, a number of isopolymolybdates such as Mo7O246- and Mo8O264- are dominant. Equations (1) – (3) demonstrate some of the proposed molybdenum equilibrium reactions[1]."

This study addressed the separation and recovery of vanadium(IV), iron, and titanium from synthetic and real leach solutions of vanadium-bearing titanomagnetite using extractant P204 (di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate) and P507 (2-ethylhexyl hydrogen- 2-ethylhexyl phosphonate). Based on the speciation analysis of vanadium in sulfuric acid medium, the single-stage extraction efficiency of vanadium, iron, and titanium was 94.21%, 3.45%, and 5.32%, respectively, under the optimal extraction condition of P204-P507 concentration of 15% (v/v), P204 to P507 ratio of 3:1 (v/v), TBP (Tributyl phosphate) concentration of 5%, sulfonated kerosene concentration of 80%, initial pH of 1.8, contact time of 8 min, and phase ratio (O/A) of 2:1. By confirming the predictions of the McCabe-Thiele diagram, a five-stage countercurrent extraction was carried out and the desirable extraction efficiency for vanadium reached 98.13%. The maximum co-extraction coefficient and distribution ratio of vanadium were 2.58 and 26.23, respectively. The stripping efficiencies and concentrations of a vanadium-rich solution by three stages of countercurrent experiments with 20 vol.% sulfuric acid reached 99.14% and 0.58 g/L, respectively, while almost all of the titanium remained in the organic phase. The mechanism of synergistic extraction between hydrogen ions of P–O–H and VO2+ in acidic conditions was confirmed by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and molecular structure derivation. Besides, the separated impurity ions ( Fe2+) after oxidation, precipitation, and roasting process form a qualified iron oxide pigment with a total iron content of 97.2%.
