With the increasing demand for minerals and the decline in the quality of ore reserves, technologies to maximize recovery are critical to a mine?s economic success. Many mining waters exhibit the potential to form hardness-based inorganic scales, which inhibit effective mineral recovery. Often, a continuously-fed chemical deposit control program is implemented by the mine site to inhibit these scales. The use of retractable scale coupons is the current industry standard for monitoring these programs; however, a key drawback to their use is the limited, and sometimes untimely amount of information they provide. A proprietary fouling analyzer has been developed that can be used to continuously monitor the formation of inorganic scales in mining process streams. Consequently, it can be used to continually, and more effectively, communicate the efficacy of an antiscalant program, thereby providing the ability to compare different scale control programs and to optimize their feedrates. Case studies presented validate the applicability of this technology to help optimize mineral recovery.

Mott MacDonald and Project Management Advisors are providing Technical and Project Management services for San Diego County for the Courthouse Commons Project. The Courthouse Commons Project involves the redevelopment of three downtown blocks owned by San Diego County and construction of an Inmate Transfer Tunnel between the County Central Jail and the San Diego Central Court. The tunnel will be 327 feet long, crosses the San Diego Fault and is being constructed using the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). This paper discusses the history and procure‑ ment strategy for the project, the technical aspects of the transfer tunnel and the con‑ struction progress of the tunnel to date.

Several companies have adopted policies and standards aimed explicitly at increasing ‘local procurement’, recognising that local economic participation has benefits for companies and communities alike. From a corporate perspective, local economic participation is seen as one means of maintaining a social license to operate, as well as ensuring reliability of supply by having a supplier located nearby. From a community perspective, the participation of local businesses in the resource project is a means by which the benefits of resource development can flow into their communities. This paper is based on the research undertaken to produce a good practice guide for the mining, oil and gas sector. Our research revealed that the extent to which the local community will actually benefit from local procurement initiatives is dependent on the capacity of the community to supply goods and services to the project and, even more importantly, on its ability to adapt to the inevitable changes that accompany large-scale resource development. We provide guidance on adapting impact assessment tools to guide planning of procurement interventions.

In German hardcoal mining approximately 1 or 2 cases of spontaneous combustion are recorded per 10 million tonnes of saleable output. In approximately every 20th spontaneous combustion case, CH, is ignited. By the example of a fire caused by spontaneous combustion on Friedrich Heinrich colliery, an overview on the measures taken for firefighting and explosion prevention is given. These measures comprise (in sequential order) - early fire detection by CO-monitoring, - gob-sealing measures against ventilation air leaks, - full-space inertization of the coalface subsequent to a CH,- deflagration, - installation of a target inertization of the caved-in gob under the protection of the full-space inertization, - re-opening of the fire zone and reestablishment of the ventilation-air current, - completion of the salvaging work with continued target inertization of the caved-in gob and further sealing measures (monolithic packing), - sealing of the coalface after salvaging. The measures described allowed gain of control of a safety- critical (because close to the face) gob fire caused by spontaneous combustion, in spite of a CH, deflagration, within few days only, and salvaging of equipment from that coalface and start-up of the follow-up coal-face on schedule. The measures taken as well as the experiences gained allow deduction of general safety criteria for fighiing of gobfires caused by spontaneous combustion, and for controlling the explosion risk. e.g. - warning and alert thresholds for early detection of fires, - criteria for spotting of the zone of fire, - rules for tightening caved-in gobs, - thresholds for the retreat of firefighting crews from the vicinity of the zone of fire, and for starting ineiization, - considerations for positioning of and strength requirements for stoppings with/without inertization, - flow-by-volume adjustment of inertization, - safety rules for work with respiratory apparatus in the inertized zone, - safety rules for the re-opening of zones of fire. The considerations end up in the conclusions that the duration in terms of months of the classic cycles of sealing, waiting, and reopening can nowadays be reduced to a few days only by purposeful combination of full-space inertization and locally confined tar- get inertization of the gob area. The earlier high risks incured by the mine resuce squads en- trusted with sealing of zones of mine fires under explosion hazards can be reduced by the method described, provided the safety regulations are conformed with. In this way, intertizing contributes substantially to reduction of down-time caused by mine fires, to preservation of recoverable parts of the deposit, and to improved safety of the fire-fighting crews.

As the dust begins to settle and mining companies begin to take stock of the battle, Newmont Mining Corp. will be one that is standing strong with just a few scrapes and bruises thanks in large part to the leadership of president and chief executive officer Gary Goldberg and his right hand man and chief operating officer, Chris Robison.As he closes in on retirement (for a second time) Robison, a third-generation miner from Nevada, took time to speak with Mining Engineering about a 33-year career in which, among other things, he is credited with not just helping Newmont survive the turbulent times but with steering the company to a safer, more productive and more profitable heading.“I think we did it better than anyone else,” Robison said when asked how the company fared during the past five years. “We didn’t talk about it a lot, we just put together a strategy and we delivered.”What Newmont, the world’s second-largest gold mining company by production, delivered since Robison took the position of chief operating officer in 2013 are improvements in costs, porduction, projects and safety.Operating under the mantra of “live within your means,” Robison was pulled out of retirement from Rio Tinto and into a challenging situation at Newmont. The price of gold was in a nose dive from a high of nearly $58/g ($1,800/oz) and heading to levels closer to $38.60/g ($1,200 oz).“Newmont is a big ship that can’t be turned, but has to be steered,” said Robison. “We recognized that we had to set a new course. The direction the ship was going was great for $1,600 to $1,800/oz gold but we were chasing ounces.”Like the rest of the gold mining sector before the falling gold prices, Newmont was focused on volume and was looking for gold wherever it could be found. The slogan at Newmont in 2011 was “7 million ounces a year by 2017.”When Robison came on board it was a different reality.“We had to begin focusing on value over volume as the cornerstone of Newmont going forward,” he said."

Mycobacterium phlei has very good potential as a hematite flotation collector. The flotation recovery of hematite is dependent upon the solution pH and concentration of the microorganism. The critical pH for maximum recovery of hematite is around three, which corresponds to the point of zero charge of the microorganism. An excellent correlation between the flotation recovery and bacterial adhesion on hematite is observed. The adhesion of Mycobacterium phlei on hematite can be described by the potential energy of interaction calculations using an extended DLVO theory.

"Ask an average non-industry person on the street “What is coal? What is coal mining? What is a coal miner?” The most common answers are coal is something Santa puts in your stocking for being naughty, coal mining is destroying the earth causing global warming, and a coal miner is a person that uses a pick and shovel to dig coal out of the earth. As farfetched as these answers seem, unfortunately this is the opinion of many Americans. Realizing the lack of educational opportunity regarding coal and coal mining, a first-of-its-kind grassroots coal education program known as CEDAR (Coal Education Development and Resource) was created. What started from a general conversation at the December 1992 North Carolina Coal Institute (NCCI) Winter Meeting at the Mid Pines Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina led to the creation, and later expansion of, CEDAR. NCCI President, Gene McBurney, challenged John Justice, NCCI Board Member from east Kentucky, to come up with an idea of how to improve the image of the coal industry, pledging $5,000 from the NCCI as seed money to assist in the development of any such program. John then met with the leaders of Coal Operators and Associates, Inc., (COA) in Pikeville, KY where they agreed to match the NCCI commitment, as well as to assist in the program’s development. After further meetings with representatives from industry, business, and the local school system, CEDAR, Inc. (of east KY) was born. The first year of implementation, the program offered coal education programs to public and private schools in one county in east Kentucky. Although it started in the coalfields of eastern Kentucky, it certainly did not end there. After an amazingly successful first year of the program, it didn’t take long for industry leaders in the western Kentucky coal-fields to learn about, and take note of this new, unique, and exciting program that provided opportunities for teachers and students to learn, “the rest of the story” about the coal industry. Through the joint efforts of Costain Coal, and the Western Kentucky Coal Association, CEDAR of West Kentucky, Inc. was formed in 1994, and has operated since that time, except for the two year period from 2004-2006. The program restarted in 2006 under the name of CEDAR West, Inc. and continues to be offered in six western Kentucky counties."

Clinkers are the result of a seam of coal catching fire and burning the surrounding rocks. The fires caused the surrounding rocks to be baked at high temperatures, removing organic material and partially forming glass. These rocks become hard, orange, and brick like, forming clinker. The purpose of the study is to determine their potential to contain economic levels of critical minerals, including Rare Earth Elements. Some clinkers contain over 200 ppm total REE.

The U.S. cement industry, including Puerto Rico, again set a record in terms of production and shipments. The increase in shipments came primarily from imports of portland cement as domestic production from produced and imported clinker gained only 1.9 Mt (2.1 million st). Clinker production as reported to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) was 88.6 Mt (97.6 million st), an increase of 1 percent. Gray and white portland cement production from domestic and imported clinker, estimated at 93.5 Mt (103 million st), was up 1.9 Mt (2.1 million st). Masonry cement shipments of 5.5 Mt (6 million st), which equates closely to production, was up 6.3 percent. Blended ce-ment shipments were up 35.9 percent from 2004 at 2.35 Mt (2.6 million st).

Coal spontaneous combustion is one of the major disasters in coal mines, and it can have devastating effects on the normal mining and production activities of mines. This paper presents the field investigation, field measurement, data analysis, and formulation of fire-extinguishing measures conducted to extinguish the fire from a coal spontaneous combustion incident that occurred in a high-gas coal mine in China.

In Australia, Safe Work legislation requires mines to have a documented ‘Safety Case’ explaining how a mine will safely manage all major hazards. A similar requirement is legislated or inferred by regulation in all jurisdictions. For small scale, instabilities leading to day-to-day seismic hazards, a ‘Stability Safety Case’ built around observational methods and measurement triggered responses can be effective because adverse situations are easily identified and the costs of lower control measures are not onerous. Also, if the influence of a volume of yield on the mine load system is small, the response of the system will be more predictable. However, for episodes of large scale mine instability, the hazard derives from the widespread, multi component influence of the event on the mine load system. As the system response depends on interactions between many parts, the resolution of predictions will be lower and situations can arise without local precedent. Further, as episodes of large scale instability change the stiffness and nature of the connectedness between parts of the mine load system, the behavior of the system before the event will be a poor empirical basis for forecasts of event related hazards. Most importantly, Triggered Action Response Plans (TARPs) and ‘traffic light’ warning systems cannot make design choices or identify new hazard phenomena. They are ‘lower’ control measures targeting explicit human-made instability hypotheses. As such, the Safety Cases related to management of hazard from potential large scale seismic events and mine instability cannot rely solely on TARPs. Mines that successfully manage meaningful dynamic instability always acknowledge the ultimate reliance on expert human intuition, knowledge and imagination to appreciate the range of possible hazard scenarios, to make stability hypotheses and propose solutions. Complex analysis, TARPs and measurements are critical steps in the human decision cycle, but only support the making and testing of ‘Stability Hypotheses’ made by expert engineers. Relying on expert skill and judgement as essential components of a Safety Case, however essential, introduces human vulnerabilities. Another challenge is that the expert decision making process is hard to document. Beck et al 2019 first described an organizational and procedural framework for maintenance of an ongoing large-scale ‘Stability Safety Case' where a degree of expert judgement and imagination is needed to manage a seismically active mine. The structured data appreciation process outlined sufficient measurements, analysis and appreciation to confirm the stability state of the mine and was applicable to all underground mines. After several years of implementation in various forms in stoping, caving and room and pillar mines, this update addresses lessons learned and describes some considerations for numerical forecasting to establish a base case, and some challenges for empirical hazard identification.

Talc is a layered, hydrous magnesium silicate mineral. It has a soft, soapy feel and typically a smooth texture. Talc is also known for its insulation, heat resistance, chemical stability, oil absorption and strong covering quality. Talc, Mg3Si4O10 (OH)2, has a theoretical chemical composition of MgO at 31.7 percent, SiO2 at 63.5 percent, and H2O at 4.8 percent. However, talc’s chemical and mineralogical composition can vary depending on its geological history/parent rock association. These mineral associations and variable levels are usually chlorite and carbonates (magnesite, calcite and dolomite). Two key elemental substitutions that can occur in the talc crystal structure are iron for magnesium and fluorine for hydroxyl. These compositional differences may limit or enhance the talc’s usage in specific market niches. The United States remains self-sufficient in most grades of talc.

D.G. Wilder I found the suggestion that the amount of displacement of a fault can be numerically related to the thickness of gouge or breccia to be both intuitively satisfying and intriguing. I have long agreed that there is some type of relationship between the amount of gouge and the amount of displacement of faults. I congratulate the author for developing a numerical relationship between them. However, I am concerned that the limits for applying this relationship be fully understood. An underlying assumption in this approach is that there is either a uniform thickness of gouge or breccia along a given fault or the thickness does not vary widely. Since it is not always possible to confirm this, the displacements derived by this method should be viewed with caution unless significant fault extent can be observed. At the Nevada Test Site, in drifts constructed in granite for test emplacement of spent nuclear reactor fuel, we found a fault with 0.3 to 0.4 m (12 to 16 in.) of clay gouge. Within a few meters of this location, the fault had no clay gouge, but rather consisted of a highly fractured zone with significantly altered rock and some slickensides. Based on Fig. 1, the 0.3 to 0.4 m (12 to 16 in.) thickness of gouge would indicate a displacement in excess of 30 m (98 ft). However, no gouge thickness would indicate essentially no displacement. Based on a quartz vein that terminated on the fault, and is not identified nearby, an estimated displacement of more than a few meters was made. This estimate is consistent with that obtained using the regression line proposed in the paper if the 0.3 to 0.4 m (12 to 16 in.) thickness for the gouge is used. However, using the regression curves with zero thickness would not yield results consistent with what was observed in the field. Therefore, it is important to recognize that the suggested procedure would properly yield a range of probable displacements. ? *Work performed under the auspices of the US Department of Energy by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory under Contract W-7405-Eng-48. Reply by E.C. Robertson It is certainly true that the t (thickness) of gg-bx (gouge and breccia) on a fault does vary along the fault. My observations have been that near the termination of a fault, the displacement d is small and the t is also small, whereas the maximum d and t will usually be found in the central part of the fault. The information on gg-bx and t of the fault found in granite in the NTS tunnel by Mr. Wilder could be interpreted somewhat differently than he does. He speaks of the fault changing within a few meters from 0.3 to 0.4 m (12 to 16 in.) of clay gg to "a highly fractured zone with significantly altered rock and some slickensides," but no gg. The highly fractured rock may be taken to be bx, rock not so finely ground as gg but still crushed by the fault movement, equivalent to the gg in my usage, and probably occupying about the same t. Mr. Wilder's estimates for the fault in the NTS tunnel for t of 0.3 to 0.4 m (12 to 16 in.) and for d of a quartz vein, in excess of "a few meters," would place the point on the low side of the central trend line in my Fig. 1, at the lower limit. There is, of course, a problem with determining d using displacement of only one planar surface. It would be greater or lesser depending on the rake of the movement. Finally, estimating the d of a fault from its t should be made with awareness of our present uncertainties, as pointed out by Mr. Wilder. Although the central trend line in my Fig. 1 has a ratio of d/t of 100, I have put the limiting ratios at 10 and 1000. Understanding of the values of the ratio will be improved only with collection of more data, for which the discussion of Mr. Wilder is much appreciated. G.C. Waterman E.C. Robertson's paper provides significant information to a geologist attempting to deduce fault offset by noting the products of structural dislocation. However, considerable mapping in underground and open-pit mines, and examination of structures produced in different geological settings, have convinced me that gouge and breccia thickness are controlled by geological conditions and fault movement. The following paragraphs suggest geological variables that control them. 1. Depth of Loading A near-surface fault resulting from tensional stress has more breccia/gouge than is produced by a similar stress at considerable depth. A deep-loaded compressional stress may produce a linear zone of schist, or structural dislocation may occur along an earlier formed belt of schist. Such "shear zones" are common in Canadian mines in precambrian rocks. In neither case can offset be directly deduced by an analysis of the minimal gouge/breccia in the shistose rocks. At greater depth, stress may be partially to wholly relieved by flowage. I vividly recall first noting the regional "Midas Thrust" in the Lark mine, Bingham Mining District, UT (where we called the structure the North Fault). My recorded notes, as I remember them, showed a narrow gouge streak separated the `Jordan" and "Commercial" limestone units from impure, muddy limestone beds of uncertain stratigraphic position. However excellent the geologic map of an area is, it can only show what is exposed on the ground. It cannot and should not generalize the information nor complete the picture by inference: this is left to the examiner. Consequently, it becomes justified for him to use all expressions of geologic structure in order to gain an additional dimension in geologic interpretation, and particularly so in mineral exploration. In previous studies related to Arizona, the known faults were the starting points and a host of interpolated, supporting geologic factors described in earlier publications ascertained the presence of a series of structural trends and lineaments found to be rather continuous and persistent, even though unsubstantiated by geologic maps. In present studies pertaining to the humid environment, with the same aim of seeking major structural trends and lineaments, the starting points are morphologic expressions such as straight lakes and straight segments of rivers, among others, because there generally is not enough geology available. An example is given herewith for an area that straddles the International Border, north of Spokane. In both semi-arid and humid environments, one observes that mineral deposits quite often occur close to the intersection of a major fracture or lineament with some secondary trend.

Potash production from natural brines of the Bonneville Salt Flats has a comparatively long history dating back to the start of World War I. However, it vas sot until the late 1930's that a successful commercial potash operation was achieved by a firm known as Bonneville Ltd. While improvements in operating techniques, pond design and equipment have been incorporated as they became available it should he understood that the basic technology developed in the late 30's and early 1940's by Bonneville Ltd, for potash production has not been changed significantly. The purpose of this paper is to present a brief review of the history, geology and hydrology of the Bonneville Potash operations and discuss the cur¬rent methods employed for brine collection, solar evaporation and the recovery of potash and other brine chemicals. A detailed study of the hydrogeology of the Bonneville Salt Flats wan made by L. J. Turk,1 Ph.D. thesis for Stanford University in 1969, under the auspices, of Kaiser Chemicals the Industrial Chemicals Division of Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation. Turk's thesis furnished much of the information presented in this paper.

In this study, the oxidation of low-grade pyrolusite to potassium manganate in alkaline solutions under O2 pressure has been investigated. The effects of different conditions on the high-grade and low-grade pyrolusite leaching process were investigated based on thermodynamic calculation, as well as the reaction mechanisms and kinetics of the low-grade pyrolusite during the leaching process. The results showed that the manganese conversion rates of the two types of pyrolusite were almost the same, and reaching 99% for high-grade pyrolusite and 96% for low-grade pyrolusite under optimal conditions. The optimum condition for low-grade pyrolusite sample JM-2 was achieved as 0.5 MPa of the oxygen partial pressure, 55% of KOH, 14 of the initial alkali-manganese ratio, and ≤ 48 μm of the mineral granularity at 260 °C within 150 min of leaching time and 500 rpm. In alkaline leaching of low-grade pyrolusite, Mn(IV) was oxidized into Mn(VI). The particles changed from large particles to flakes and finally formed crystals. Finally, the shrinking core model was used to fully describe the leaching kinetics of the manganese. It was demonstrated that the leaching of manganese was controlled by the chemical surface reactions and the activation energy which equals 115.9121 kJ/mol.

The present study examines the use of two vs. one stage of hydrocyclones in a pilot scale ball mill circuit. The approach used for doing this is based on computer simulation with mathematical models that explicitly account for the grinding mill/classification system interaction. Parameters for the ball mill model are obtained using a short-lived radioactive tracer method in open circuit tests of the study mill. The hydrocyclone model, based on the size selectivity concept, is developed and validated in standalone testing of the study hydrocyclones. Simulation procedures are validated through actual tests of the closed circuit grinding configurations of interest. Results of the evaluation indicate that two stages of hydrocyclones in the study circuit would improve classification, increase productivity and lead to more closely sized circuit products when compared to the conventional one stage hydrocyclone circuit. A computer simulation approach for comparing these circuit configurations in larger scale grinding circuits is also suggested.

Oil from shale has been produced in foreign countries for more than a hundred years; however, except for short-lived, small operations, no commercial quantity of oil shale has yet been produced in the United States. Efforts to develop a viable oil shale process have been underway domestically for many years. At the present time, with the need for energy so urgently upon us, almost a dozen development ventures are underway or planned in Colorado and Utah. Of these several ventures, only Colony Development Operation has completed the development, testing and design of a ready-to-go 50,000 barrel per day com¬mercial project. Colony is a joint venture of the Atlantic Richfield Company, Ashland Oil Company, Shell Oil Company and The Oil Shale Corporation, more commonly known as TOSCO. TOSCO is the exclusive licensor of the TOSCO II retorting process and other oil shale technology, which includes mining, crushing and spent shale disposal techniques. This paper will deal, however, with only the materials handling aspects of the commercial oil shale operation. Oil shale handling for this infant industry is unique in that an understanding of the physical characteristics of the ore and the demands on material handling to the plant must he understood. Colony Development has completed ten years in the research and development of techniques and processes for mining, crushing and retorting raw oil shale and the disposal of spent or processed shale. A great deal has been learned about oil shale, in many cases confirming our intuitive analyses and the work of others, but more specifically we have brought it all together to a point where equipment performance and the specifications have been established and a design for the first commercial plant is now mature.

The manganese removal from aqueous solution containing high Mn2+ concentration by adsorption and oxidation was studied using manganese oxide particles as the adsorbent. The operating parameters including pH, flow rate, initial manganese concentrations, and oxidant dosage affect the performance of Mn2+ removal were evaluated in a laboratory packed column. In the multi-column adsorption tests, each additional column doubled the time for complete manganese removal. No further decrease of pH was also observed once it was lowered to pH 4.5 to 5. This finding implied the possibility of complete high manganese removal without further pH adjustment during adsorption. Oxidation of Mn2+ by dissolved oxygen was found to be insignificant for manganese removal for high Mn2+ concentration. Adsorption was the predominated mechanism involved with manganese removal. Extremely low H+/Mn2+ stoichiometry compared to the reported values was measured. These low values suggested that different adsorption mechanisms such as chemisorption other than H+/Mn2+ ion exchange might play an important role at low pH. This paper presents the quantity and explanation of the results obtained for the mechanism of adsorption and oxidation of high concentration manganese on the manganese ore particles.

Ceremonies for the induction of four mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be held Saturday, Sept. 22, 2007 at the Charles F. Barber Pavilion (Museum Convention Center) in Leadville, CO. The four inductees are James Harold Courtright (1908-1986), Dr. Howard L. Hartman (1924-2002), Charles Washington Merrill (1869-1956) and Kenyon E. Richard (1915-1993). The inductions will bring to 197 the number of mining “greats” whose engraved photographs and biographical sketches are installed in the National Mining Hall of Fame.
