Computer simtiation is a technique that has beers around for many years. Its applications include designing steel mills, planning space shota, or even developing ways to beat the casinos in Las Vegas. However, the use of computer sirndation in surface coal mining is fairly recent. To promote its use, several government agencies, including the US Bureau of Mines, Forest Service, and Department of Energy, contracted with universities and private companies to develop computer simulation programs for surface coal mining. A field study was undertaken to experimentally measure the concentrations of rare earth elements (REEs) contained in the process streams generated by a group of 20 coal preparation plants located in the eastern USA. For each site, representative samples of clean coal product, coarse refuse, and fine refuse were collected. Each sample was then partitioned into preselected size and density classes by wet screening/sieving and float-sink testing. The resultant products were dried and subjected to laboratory analyses to determine ash contents and rare earth element concentrations including Yttrium and Scandium. A detailed analysis of the database generated by this exercise showed that coal-based products from these preparation plants contained significant quantities of rare earth elements. In particular, the coarse refuse streams currently discarded by the 20 plants examined were found to contain a sufficient tonnage of REEs to satisfy the current domestic demand for these important elements. The data also showed a strong positive correlation between ash content and REE concentration, which suggested that the primary association of REEs in eastern USA bituminous coal sources is likely within fractions containing inorganic impurities. This association was well described using a simple power equation relating ash content and REE concentration. The ratio of heavy-to-light rare earth elements was discovered to be significantly higher in organically rich fractions of clean coal, suggesting that mineral impurities intimately associated with carbonaceous matter have elevated concentrations of heavy rare earth elements. A similar trend was observed for a grouping of rare earth elements (Y, Nd, Eu, Tb, and Dy) that are likely subject to near-term supply shortages. Finally, the database showed that a linear correlation existed between La for many REEs of interest, although there were several notable exceptions for some high-value REEs (Lu, Pr, and Tb).

This report summarizes the results of preliminary investigations concerning the influence of block caving mining upon adjacent mine openings and discusses possible methods for reducing critical rock pressures and damage to these openings. These investigations are one part of a general study of the rock mechanics of block caving by the Denver Mining Research Center of the Federal Bureau of Mines. The purpose of this part of the study Is to obtain an estimate of the stress concentrations around mine openings adjacent to block caving stopes for use in developing better designed openings and improving mining methods. When mine openings such as slusher drifts, grizzly drifts, and haulage drifts are damaged by rock pressures induced by block caving mining, the mining cost increases, mine production decreases, and ore recovery may be consider- ably lessened. Methods of mining that result in lower rock pressures and methods of design that enable mine openings to withstand these pressures are desirable. The development of these methods, in turn, requires a fuller understanding of the following: The stres concentrations around the mine openings and the changes in stress induced by adjacent mining; the physical properties, such as the compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of the rock surrounding the openings; and the support supplied by the concrete lining, timber sets, or other types of supports used in the openings.

The Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has partnered with a narrow vein, hard rock underground mine to research the effects of the binder content on the elasticity and post-peak ductility of cemented hydraulic backfill (CHB). This is part of a larger study to enhance the long-term integrity of ground support in underground mines. As mining advances deeper and stresses increase, CHB mix designs will benefit if they can be modified to handle higher levels of strain which are induced by an increased stope closure, typically affected by a reduction in stope width and increased mining depth, or through dynamic loading resulting from a local seismic event. This portion of the research examined the impact of reductions in binder and their impact on Young’s modulus, peak strength, and post-peak ductility.

Model pillars of limestone, marble, sandstone, and granite, with length-to-diameter ratios of 3, 2, 1, 0.5, and 0.25 (0.286 for granite), were broken in axial compression to determine to what extent an increase in end constraint increased compressive strength. Radial end constraints of 13 to 23 percent of the average axial stress in the pillar, produced by solid steel rings bonded with epoxy to the ends of dogbone-shaped specimens, increased compressive strength somewhat above that of cylindrical pillars without ring constraint. However, when the results were compared with those obtained by other investigators for straight specimens of several rock types taken collectively, with L/D ratios greater than 0.5, the resulting strengths were not significantly different. Thus, the amount of end constraint produced by the solid steel rings was about the same as that produced by the friction from the steel end plates. In other tests a radial prestress of 3,000 psi or 5,000 psi was applied prior to axial loading by adjustable hardened steel rings to increase the constraint above that obtained for the solid rings. The average radial constraint stress, expressed as a percentage of the average axial pillar stress at failure for the 3,000 psi prestress, was 54.3 percent for limestone, 40.3 percent for marble, 44.7 percent for sandstone, and 23.4 percent for granite. The average radial constraint stress, expressed as a percentage of the average axial pillar stress at failure for the 5,000 psi prestress, was 74.2 percent for limestone, 51.2 percent for marble, 61.6 percent for sandstone, and 29.7 percent for granite. These constraints increased the compressive strength significantly above the strength of straight specimens and solid-ring constrained specimens. These results suggest that large horizontal stresses in orebodies mined by the room and pillar method should increase the strength of the pillars and allow an increase in ore recovery by a reduction of pillar size when major structural defects are absent.

INTRODUCTION Rapidly increasing capacities of equipment used to load and handle material at the face require improved haulage equipment and better methods of transporting the mined materials or "muck" to the shaft or slope and out of the mine to the processing plant on the surface. Increasingly, those transportation demands are being satisfied with underground belt conveyors. Such con¬veyors provide the most readily available, most efficient, and most reliable method of carrying materials in a continuous and rapid flow from the face loading equip¬ment to the surface plant. Almost universally, belt con¬veyors are used in coal mines and those nonmetallic and metallic mines operating in relatively flat bedded deposits. Belt conveyors are available in a wide range of capacities, mainly limited by belt width, belt speed, and weight of the material to be transported. They can be used on the level, on grades, on the surface, or under¬ground. They provide a rapid and constant flow of material, transporting the material as quickly as it is mined. Length of belt conveyors is almost unlimited. Where the haulage distance exceeds the practical capacity of a single conveyor unit, two or more conveyors can be used in series. Single conveyors more than 1.6 km (1.0 mile) long are common; multiple-unit conveyors in series operation are transporting materials over distances exceeding 16.1 km (10 miles). Depending upon mate¬rials being transported, job conditions, cost of the terrain being spanned, and alternative haulage methods avail¬able, conveyors can be conceivably economical for even greater distances. Table 1 lists maximum belt speeds recommended for most materials, relating belt speeds to belt widths. Table 2 lists capacities of typical conveyors of various widths and speeds, transporting commonly mined mate¬rials of various weights. ADVANTAGES OF CONVEYOR SYSTEMS For several years after their initial introduction, belt conveyors were available only with rigid side frames or a supporting structure of steel and concrete. That con¬struction limited underground applications, due to the cost and relative inconvenience of extending or retract¬ing the belt conveyor in the confined underground environment. However, during the last 20 years, wire-¬rope side-frame belt conveyors, as shown in Fig. 1, have become widely used in underground applications. Even wider use can be anticipated with their application to the fast movement of materials in surface mining operations. Advantages of the wire-rope side-frame belt con¬veyors were realized first in panel or section belt haulage in coal mines. Soon afterward, use of those conveyors was extended to gathering and main-line haulage. The mobility of the wire-rope side-frame conveyor is the principal reason for its success. The conveyor can be extended, retracted, dismantled, moved, and reassembled easily, even in relatively confined under¬ground spaces. The intermediate structure consists of rope support stands, wire-rope side frames, wire-rope tie-off stands, and the necessary carrying idlers and return idlers. An important and very attractive feature is the ability to suspend the conveyor from the roof in an underground mine, as shown in Fig. 2, leaving more room for improved housekeeping and allowing passage of face-service equipment, haulage vehicles, and other mining equipment. The conveyor's open construction allows quick and easy visual inspection of its com¬ponents for failures or malfunctions; it also facilitates checking and correcting conveyor-belt alignment. Other advantages contributing to the attractiveness and widespread application of wire-rope side-frame conveyors in main-line, slope, and surface installations include: lower capital costs, lower installation costs, lower maintenance costs, reduced impact on idlers and belting, reduced spillage and minimal cleanup, improved conformation to undulating terrain or mine bottoms, and the ability to span most obstacles without heavy structural support. CONVEYOR CLASSIFICATIONS Underground belt conveyors are classified normally according to their function. Generally, conveyors are classified into one of four main categories: 1) Panel or section conveyors normally receive the material to be transported directly from the face-haulage equipment. 2) Gathering conveyors are secondary haulage units that usually receive material from two or more panel conveyors. 3) Main-line conveyors transport all the material mined in the underground operations to the slope or shaft. Normally, they receive the material from two or more gathering conveyors. 4) Slope conveyors generally operate in tandem with the main-line conveyor, providing continuous Table 1. With the extension of mining beneath residential and industrial areas, it is becoming increasingly necessary to extract coal and minerals in such a way that subsidence damage due to groundmovement is reduced to a minimum. Understanding clearly of the mechanism of subsidence development is a must in view of the environmental problems and the energy crisis today. This paper gives a simple analysis of various components resulting from subsidence and the influence of other factors on their development. An up-to-date review of the subsidence and strain profiles is presented, with particular references to the coal mining operations. The importance of this topic from mining damage to structures, buildings properties and environment in mining areas is undeniable. Field results are discussed.

The introduction of Vertical Crater Retreat (VCR) Stoping at the Homestake Mine in Lead, SD, constitutes a major advance in Homes take Mining Company's efforts to improve productivity and reduce costs through underground mine mechanization. The work to date indicates that Vertical Crater Retreat Stoping is one of the safest methods of underground hardrock mining today, and is competitive with all other forms of stoping in terms of cost and productivity. Homes take anticipates that VCR stoping rill account for approximately 30% of the total mine production in 1980.

The 25th Peruvian Mining Convention (Convención de Ingeneieros de-Minas del Perú) was held Sept. 10-14, 2001, in Arequipa, Peru. The biennual meeting, sponsored by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (Instituto de Ingeneiros de Minas del Peru), is designed to showcase the Peruvian mining industry and to ?promote progress in the national mining sector.? The convention consisted of technical sessions, forums, field trips and social activities. The technical sessions featured 80 papers selected from more than 200 papers submitted. The well-organized 2001 meeting was held at the Tecsup Institute of Technology of Arequipa. The meeting was held in conjunction with Exposición Technologica Minera (Extemin), a mining trade exhibition. The2001 Extemin had representatives from more than 400 companies in attendance. In addition to the many Peruvian companies present, the trade exhibition featured pavilions representing the United States, Canada, Germany, Australia and Chile. Registration at the 2001 meeting was about 3,300, a conference record. The theme for the 2001 meeting was Mining: Society and Development. Mario Brescia was chairman of the organizing committee. He said in his opening remarks that ?this year?s meeting seeks to emphasize the commitment on the part of the [mining] companies to treat our natural resources responsibly, controlling any adverse impacts and giving priority to group benefits.? Consistent with this theme, many of the technical papers stressed environmental and social responsibility. Many successful examples of environ-mental and social responsibility on the part of the mining industry were presented in the technical sessions.

Rio Algom Mines Ltd. owns eight uranium mines and mills in the Elliot Lake district of Ontario, seven of which were producing before 1960. At present only one mine is operating meeting current contract requirements. Under present economic conditions, it is not feasible to mine ore of less than 2.0 lbs./ton U308, although there are very large reserves below this grade. We are interested in preconcentration for three possible applications: to extend ore reserves by permitting use of lower grade ore, to reduce costs on processing of present grade ore, and to reduce capital investment in expanding production to meet future production goals.

The New England States form the most northeastern portion of the continental United States and include Connecticut, Rhode island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. These states have an aggregate population of over 10.5 million people, and an average annual population rate increase of about 1.3%. A great deal of new construction is required each year to meet the increasing demand for new homes, roads, offices, factories, and warehouses. Yet, prices of construction materials such as blocks and concrete are generally higher in New England than in other well populated areas of the United States. This is an indication of local demand being somewhat greater than supply, an atmosphere conducive to new developments in the production of construction materials. One such field of development is the rapidly growing Lightweight Aggregate Industry. Recent construction in Boston has used a great deal of lightweight aggregate. New structures using lightweight aggregate in lightweight concrete include the following: M.I.T.'s 20-story Earth Science Center and 17-story Married Students Housing Project Prudential Life Insurance Center, West End Redevelopment Project at Charles River Park, Hotel Americana, and the British-owned 33-story office building at 50 Pearl Street.

Ring gear and pinions used as the final drive on large metallurgical grinding mills are expected to transmit their rated horsepower reliably for long periods of time. Duty is 24 hrs./ day. Life expectancy of such gear sets is of the order of 20 years; that is, each gear and pinion flank is expected to resist failure by pitting for 10 years. This means that for a dual pinion gear set having a ratio of 18.42:1.0 and a mill speed of 10 RPM, every gear tooth will see 105.12 x 106 surface contact stress cycles and every pinion tooth will see 968.15 x 106 surface contact stress cycles in a 10 year period. The allowable surface contact stress on the gear and pinion is determined by the material hardnesses. The rule being the higher the hardness, the higher the allowable surface contact stress may be.

In Japan, almost no natural gypsum is mined for industrial uses of gypsum, and almost all gypsum is synthetic gypsum, that is desulphogypsum, produced by waste sulphur dioxide gas from metal smelters and power plants, and other industrial waste sources. The amount of such sythetic gypsum production has reached more than six million metric tons per year (1979). Major uses are for cements and building materials. Other uses are soil conditioner, investment casting mold, organic composite materials, etc and sulphur recovery by gypsum decomposition is being examined. This paper summarizes present Japanese production and uses of sythetic gypsun produced from industrial waste.

The paper describes a practical methodology based on numerical modelling for the prediction of progressive failure of underground mine stopes with cable bolt support. A case study of the 40-761 stope at Kidd Creek Mine, Timmins, Ontario is presented. The stope was mined by blasthole open stoping in 1986 as a lead stope within a mining block between 36-1 and 38-2 levels. Initially designed to peak at 38-2 level, the stope back caved upwards approximately 40m towards 36-1 level. Cable bolts were installed above the stope from 36-1 level after caving had begun. The stope eventually stopped to cave when the falling rock mass encountered a sufficiently high cable density. The paper provides details of the geomechanical data and modelling results of the case study. Numerical modelling is carried out using a finite element package known as e-z tools which has, among other things, a special cable/rockbolt simulation capability.

Saudi Arabia’s mineral potential offers development target that compliment the national effort to diversify the income of this oil and gas economic based nation. Ma’aden, a joint stock company with paid-up capital of US$1 billion, has from its inception in 1997, actively developed in-house engineering and management skills to transform the Arabian shield’s mineral potential into such real projects. Gold mine operating facilities of 100,000 oz/yr underground and 50,000 oz/yr open pit are de-scribed, as well as 3 targets, two of which are underdevelopment; Al Hajar (3,000 tpd at 2.5 gpt Au)and Al Amar (5,000 tpd at 20 gpt Au). Emphasis is also on exploitation of phosphate rock and down-stream fertilizer products, based on the Kingdom’s107,000 sq. km. northern basin geological reserve. Al Jalamid, the prime target, represents 216 million tonnes of these P2O5 reserves. Saudis and expatriates, together, lead international engineering companies and contractors operating and developing these facilities.

The demand for thermal coal both nationally and internationally is projected to increase rapidly. The marketability of high ETU thermal coal produced in the USA is, however, limited by its high sulfur content. Fortunately, over 70 percent of the sulfur exists in pyritic form. The research conducted at Southern Illinois University indicates that over 90 percent of the pyrite can be removed by simple devices such as concentrating tables, cyclones, or froth flotation cells and the desulfurized coal can be blended with low sulfur western coal to produce EPA compliance coal. Thus, both the low BTU western coal and the high sulfur midwestern coal can be rendered competitive in the utility markets, here and abroad due to improved utilization.

Samarium (Sm), as one of the rare earth elements (REEs), has gained significant attention in the production of samarium- cobalt (SmCo) magnets due to their high corrosion and oxidation resistance, as well as their high-temperature stability. SmCo magnets find applications in various industries, including but not limited to national defense, aerospace, military and medical equipment. Sm and Co have been classified as critical metals due to their economic importance and supply risk. Recovering Sm from SmCo magnets is an effective method to ensure a stable supply. The present study investigates an integrated hydrometallurgical treatment and combustion process for the preparation of rare earth oxide (Sm2O3 ) powders from SmCo. Initially, SmCo powders are exposed to nitric acid, and the resulting slurry is selectively oxidized at 250 °C to obtain Sm(NO3)3 , Co2O3 and Fe2O3 . Subsequently, the selectively oxidized powders are leached with water to extract Sm. Sm2O3 powders are produced from the obtained leaching solution using an energy- and time-efficient solution combustion process. Finally, the optimal conditions for the production of Sm2O3 are identified, and the produced powder is characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) analysis.

Partition curves are used to evaluate the separation performance of gravity-based concentrators. The partition curve is used to identify the nominal density cutpoint and relative sharpness of the separation. In addition, the graphical representation makes it possible to quickly identify the root cause of misplacement based on the characteristic shape of the partition curve. Partition curves have been traditionally constructed using data obtained from float-sink tests using heavy organic liquids. These toxic liquids are environmentally unfriendly and have been banned in several countries. Another method of establishing the partition curve is to introduce density tracers into the feed and plot the distribution to the lights and heavies. For heavy mineral separations, this approach is generally impractical due to the fine particle size. In addition, the partition data obtained using these existing techniques do not account for secondary factors such as particle shape that may influence the separation. In light of these problems, a methodology was developed for constructing partition curves using experimental data obtained from microscopic grain-counts. This technique, which essentially uses the different mineral species as density tracers, provides a powerful tool for evaluating heavy mineral separations. A case study is provided to demonstrate how this analytical approach can be used to assess and improve the separaton performance in an industrial upgrade plant.

The Waterview Tunnel comprises twin 2.4 km long 13.1 m internal diameter three lane road tunnels in Auckland, New Zealand. The City Rail Link (CRL) is a 3.45 km long, 6.24 m internal diameter twin rail tunnel underneath Auckland’s city center. This paper presents an overview of the tunnel geometry, segmental lining congurations, geometric constraints, performance criteria and functional reuirements for the large diameter Waterview Tunnels and smaller diameter CRL tunnels. Other key aspects, which include sustainability, innovations, construction performance and practical aspects are discussed and compared. Lessons learnt from these mega tunnelling projects are also presented.
