The one-dimensional mathematical model of unsteady-state heat conduction through semi-infinite homogeneous and isotropic airway walls with convective heat and moisture transfer between their wet or dry naked surfaces and mine air with time variable temperature and humidity has been developed on the basis of introduction of acceptable simplifications of description of heat and moisture transfer between rock mass and mine air. The analytical solutions for computation of the temperature distribution and surface temperature of the airway walls and floor and for calculation of water vapour pressure near the wet surfaces at given time are obtained by means of the model presented. The presented solutions are derived for general conditions and they could be easily adapted to the actual ones. Results of the model represent basis for balancing heat and moisture transfer between mine air and its surrounding in deep mines under time variable temperature and humidity of the air and enable us to solve complicated dynamic changes of mine air temperature and humidity in an airway system by relatively simple mathematical tools. INTRODUCTION The importance of unfavourable influences and the costs of condition arrangements increases with mine depth. Precision demands on the methods which predict the environmental condition changes and by which it is possible to optimize condition arragements are still increasing. Environmental conditions in deep mines are determined especially by flow velocity, barometric pressure, temperature, and humidity of mine air. Therefore new and more exact mathematical models of mine air flow through airway system and those of heat and moisture transfer between mine air and individual important sources of heat and moisture are developed. The paper presented deals with description and solution of problems of heat and moisture transfer between mine air and airway walls as the rock mass is one of the important heat and moisture sources in deep mines. There are several different approaches to the problem. In some models the moisture transfer between mine air and airway walls is not considered at all. In other models the moisture transfer is described only by certain empirical coefficients. Simultaneous heat and moisture transfer is described seldom. Introduction The objective of the design and operation of a mine is to make as much money as possible within certain reasonable and responsible constraints. The imposition of constraints on the objective of maximizing profits can result in an optimum mine design. This paper deals with the maximization of profits. Optimization will be discussed in a future paper. In the mining industry, it is generally accepted that the maximum economic recovery is defined by identifying the reserves and the sequence of mining that results in maximum net present value (NPV) or discounted cash flow-rate of return (DCF-ROR), as indicated in Fig. 1 (see Lemieux, 2000). Current parametric analyses techniques, such as varying the mining costs; profit reservation; sales price or metal content, to define pit limits and mining sequence technically referred to single, double or triple parameterization, do not assure that the curve in Fig. 1 will be maximized. In defining the sequence, the first material to be mined should be the first grouping of recoverable mineral that has the highest after-tax unit value and that forms a feasible mining unit. The assumed mining of the first pit should be followed by the assumed mining of the second most profitable and practical pit or pit expansion. If this process of grouping and sequencing is followed until the profitability approaches zero, the general sequence required to extract the maximum economically recoverable reserve is identified. The curve in Fig. I is constructed by calculating the NPV for a series of sequences, each assuming operations are terminated on successively lower profit pits. If the operation ceases on a pit with too high of a profit, opportunity is lost, and the NPV is lower than the maximum. The NPV curve peaks and then starts to decline before the zero-profit pit is assumed mined. This occurs because the money invested in advanced stripping would have produced a greater return if it was invested at the dis¬count rate. The maximum economically recoverable reserve is defined by the pit limit corresponding to the maximum NPV or DCF-ROR. Pit and phase definition The real challenge of reserve definition is identifying the phasing and after-tax profit per ton, so that the curve in Fig. 1 can be plotted. The after-tax profit cannot be properly addressed until after the pits are designed, the production is scheduled and the cash flow is estimated. Throughout the years, many investigators have ad¬dressed this problem. A major thrust of the famous paper in which Lerchs and Grossman (1965) presented their algorithm was to identify a sequence that would produce a result similar to that identified in Fig. 1. Whittle's (1988) four-dimensional analysis is designed to address this issue. The author addressed this same issue in a paper presented to the 1968 Canadian Institute of Mining national convention (Lemieux, 1968). Without a relatively simple methodology to con¬struct the curve in Fig. 1, the number of iterations in a trial-and-error method becomes prohibitively burden-some. The pit designer seeks a simple pit-planning parameter that will serve as a proxy for the after-tax profit per ton used in defining the curve in Fig. 1. The designer's goal is to apply this pit-planning parameter using standard pit-wall location techniques to design a series of pits that will provide a guide to the sequencing. Common techniques used to position pit walls are strip-ratio limits, highwall incremental analysis, floating-cone methods or "maximizer" applications1. Costs, revenues, noncash charges, taxes and profits are usually structured on a unit basis for use in the pit-wall location analysis. Application of the proxy parameter using the pit-design tools should, ideally, result in the definition of pits and sequences that will maximize the curve in Fig. 1. 1 The pit-design tool frequently referred to in the literature as an "optimizer" defines a pit boundary that maximizes the value contained within based on the input parameters and the safe pit-wall angle. The optimization of the pit design involves selection of rate of production, cutoff grade, product quality and other considerations. These considerations constrain the maximization of value. Therefore, pit-design tools that maximize value should be called "maximizers."

Thirty years ago, the U.S. gold mining industry was hanging on by its fingernails. Save for one great mine, the Homestake, most production was coming from copper smelters such as Kennecott and Magma. Even Homestake itself was under great pressure from rising costs and a fixed price for gold. The outlook was dim, to say the least. Today, as it has for most of the past decade, the American gold mining industry stands among the world leaders in production, and in the development of mining and mineral processing technology. What caused this dramatic change? Obviously, the freeing of the gold price was a major factor, as was the decline in South African production, but these events alone could not have created the U.S. strength we see today. It was technology, investment, and the determination of miners to build an entirely new industry that were the indispensable ingredients. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, with great foresight, had begun the research that led to heap leaching before the gold price began to rise, and Newmont had committed to build a small mill at Carlin, a move then considered quite risky. From that point, the U.S. gold mining industry was placed on lower-grade ores then being found in Nevada and elsewhere, but it was soon apparent that we would have to develop new technologies to deal with more refractory ores, carbonaceous as well as sulfide-bearing. This is now being done with considerable success. Despite its success, or perhaps because of it, the gold mining industry has come under pressure from various groups who characterize their activities as motivated by "public interest." The public interest they refer to properly include the health and safety workers and impacted communities, as well as protection of the environment, and with these concerns we miners have relatively little argument. In fact, we consider health, safety and the environment among our highest priorities, and not just because regulations may require us to do so. The argument, however, is not about the regulation of a viable mining industry, it is about a well-organized movement to attack and condemn mining in the media and to misrepresent its importance to the Nation and its willingness to accept responsible regulation. Once largely local or regional, the interest groups to which I refer are now quite large, national in scope, and even becoming international. This trend, taken together with finances raised from their dues and contributions, would make the interest groups formidable adversaries for mining, but their grip on the media enormously magnifies their influence. Unfortunately, it also makes possible the wide dissemination of incomplete, incorrect or slanted information. I am not here to "bash" the interest groups. On the whole, I believe that many of them have made positive contributions to society. As conservationists, however, I question their authority to make, or foster, decisions about which American industries and communities live and which die. To illustrate, I would like to present for your consideration the problem of cyanide, one of the issues over which the gold mining industry is most threatened. CYANIDE-POISON OR MIRACLE SOLVENT? Let me get this out of the way right up front: cyanide in most of its chemical forms is toxic. In some forms it is also listed as a carcinogen. These are adverse characteristics cyanide shares with a considerable number of industrial chemicals, including some that are widely used without the stringent regulations already in place for the mining uses of cyanide. In these uses, by the way, the risk to humans comes from direct ingestion of cyanide or cyanide-bearing solutions, or from the accidental acidification of solutions leading to release of hydrocyanic acid gas. That these risks are under control in mining can be seen from the fact that, in modern U.S. practice, there has never been a documented fatality attributed to cyanide! Because of its toxicity, cyanide cannot enter and be accumulated in the food chain. It can, however, be a threat to birds and animals that ingest cyanide-bearing solutions. Protection against this is, quite properly, a responsibility of individual mining operations, and considerable sums are spent each year to prevent or reduce bird and animal exposures. It should be evident, though, that many human activities, including highway traffic, windmills, use of pesticides and the like, result in bird and animal losses. Mining's use of cyanide, and the measures taken to protect birds and animals, should be considered in context. Cyanide must be kept out of surface streams and groundwater, and existing regulations mandate this. Any cyanide residues left in leach heaps, waste dumps and disused facilities must be eliminated, and we have proven technologies to do this now, just as we have means to detoxify tailings prior to disposal. The gold mining industry decries those rare instances when irresponsible operators fail to deal with contamination, and agrees that they should be held responsible. We do not agree, however, that the great majority of responsible companies should be punished, in advance, for accidents that have never happened. So much for the poison, what about the "miracle solvent?" Is that an overstatement? Well, consider the fact that gold has been called "noble" from earliest times, because it does not oxidize under atmospheric exposure, and that it appeared to the ancients to be utterly insoluble. Later generations of scientists did discover that it could be dissolved, but only by a combination of acids so potent that it became known as aqua Regia. Later still, it was found that chlorine would also dissolve gold, and attempts were made to base commercial processes on this, without a great deal of success. It remained

A process has been developed to recover gold and copper from two waste materials at the Bougainville Copper Limited mine in Papua New Guinea. It involves the bioleaching, in reactors, of a pyrite concentrate to liberate refractory gold and generate sulphuric acid, ferric sulphate and biomass for bacterial leaching of a chalcopyritic waste rock dump. Gold is to be recovered by cyanide leaching and copper by solvent extraction/electrowinning. The reactor bioleaching was developed in continuously operated reactors of 1 m3 capacity by CRA Advanced Technical Development at Cockle Creek, while the dump leaching was developed in 750 kg columns on site at Bougainville Copper Limited. The process was to be piloted on site.

Variations in ore grade, mineralogy, and copper pricing structures over the life of the Inspiration mine have mandated many modifications to the treatment methods to maximize process economics. In the 1970's, copper prices generally declined, while inflation, wages, and interest rates increased. A metallurgical treatment route had to be developed for this continuing economic climate which would be capable of minimizing labor, energy, and capital cost requirements. After many years of development, the patented "Ferric Cure" process was introduced to satisfy these requirements. This dump leach process for treatment of mixed oxide/sulfide ore includes: strict mineralogical control of ore placed for leaching, controlled leach pad construction, solution saturation and curing of the pads with higher acid concentrations, and, finally, rinsing of the cured pads for removal of dissolved copper. Leach solutions, high in sulfuric acid during the cure application and low in sulfuric acid during the rinse, contain sufficient ferric iron to enhance the leaching of chalcocitic sulfide minerals.

Reduction bleaching is used to improve the brightness and color of the kaolin pigments sold to the paper and speciality industries. The bleach re¬duces the iron oxide associated with kaolin deposits to a colorless form by the following reaction: Na2S2O42+ 6Fe+3 + 4 H2O -> 2 NaHSO4 + 6Fe+2 + 6H+ (Conley et al., 1964). At present, sodium hydrosulfite is used by the kaolin industry as the reductive bleach. It is often purchased commercially as a liquid solution and added into an acidified slurry. Before the use of commercial sodium hydrosulfite, kaolin plants manufactured zinc hydrosulfite on site by adding zinc dust to sulfurous acid made by passing SO2 gas into water. This process was abandoned in the 1970s due to environmental concerns about zinc in waste waters. In the 1970s, Engelhard patented a process that made sodium hydrosulfate from an iron hydrosulfate (Tiethof, 1978). Difficulties with separating the iron hydroxide byproduct from the bleach and a decrease in the cost of commercial bleach caused the project to be abandoned.

A petrographic approach to studying the organic matter in ore deposits is advantageous in that direct observation of sample heterogeneity can be made, organic constituents (macerals) can be identified, and valuable information about the geological history of the sample (such as thermal history, oxidation, and reworking) can be obtained. Thermally immature bitumens are compositionally and structurally heterogeneous, and optically isotropic. The end product of thermal alteration, graphite, is compositionally and structurally homogeneous, and optically an isotropic. One route by which thermally immature bitumens can approach the graphite structure Is by an aromatic intermediate phase, termed mesophase. The development of optical anisotropy and a thermal mesophase has been observed In several high temperature deposits. Textures in bitumens are described from the thermally-altered Mississippi Valley-Type deposit at Nanisivik (Northwest Territories), the silver-vein deposit at Kongsberg (Norway), and the gold deposit at Carlin (Nevada). Textural evidence for multiple generations of bitumens, supportive of a pulsing model for incoming brines, is shown. Petrological evidence for the introduction of bitumens as an immiscible phase or possibly as micelles is shown in the Carlin and Kongsberg deposits.

Installation of a Load Commutated Inverter (LCI) provides an economical method for conversion of a Fixed Speed Semi-Autogenous Grinding Mill into one with variable speed, qualities. Though capital intensive, the conversion appears to be one of the most cost-effective methods to gain the advantage of critical speed variations for variable ore characteristics. Expected advantages from the installation of LCI drives at the Goldstrike Mine were decreased liner wear, decreased media consumption and additional grind for increased production rates. These issues as well as construction, economics and performance will be discussed in the presentation. The utilization of the existing equipment came to play an integral part of the study and economic justification of the overall project.

Kaolin is a hydrated aluminum silicate mined primarily in middle Georgia along the "fall line", the location of the coast line in prehistoric times. It is used extensively as a filler for paper, insecticides, tires, plastics, a pigment for paints, as a coating for fine gloss paper, and for high grade ceramic products, such as catalytic converters. During its journey from the open pit mine to its final use, kaolin takes many forms, and must be handled in many different ways. The purpose of this presentation is to follow kaolin through its process and briefly describe some of the methods Georgia Kaolin Company, one of the world's largest kaolin producers, uses to handle and convey its product and some of the peculiarities involved.

Mining operations take a tremendous toll on equipment, operating in difficult conditions day after day. Owners and operators cannot make the job any easier, but they can give their equipment an advantage. Equipment life may be extended through preventive maintenance and the proper application of quality lubricants. This means lubricants that are made to last longer and stand up better to the punishment mining equipment must endure. There are several practices to consider as part of a successful preventive maintenance program. A good place to start is to review original equipment manufacturer recommendations about servicing and maintenance intervals for each part of the equipment, especially the engine. If these recommendations have not been followed, owners and operators must begin periodic service work on equipment to help minimize equipment down-time and extend engine life.

Pumpable J-Crib stopping walls and Jennmar high-strength (HS) stopping panel walls are widely used for resisting high-ventilation air pressures and roof support in underground mines due to their installation efficiency, convergence allowance, and better performance than traditional concrete block stopping walls. Based on the different entry dimensions and required maximum ventilation air pressures of up to 36-in. water gauge, 24-, 27-, 30-, and 36-in.-diameter pumpable J-Crib stopping walls, or 18- to 30-in. thick Jennmar HS stopping panel walls can be designed, and their support capacities and convergence allowances are evaluated for better roof control. Pumpable J-Crib stopping walls consist of 0.187-in.-diameter steel wire reinforced, JCrib material-filled bags, and non-wire-reinforced filler bags in between. Jennmar HS stopping panel walls consist of two, 20-gauge (0.04-in.-thick), galvanized, cold-formed steel panels with J-Seal materials pumped in between. Based on the fundamental structural design principles and specifications of ACI 318-19(22), the compression and flexural strength, and shear resistance of the walls can be checked to be compliant with the codes and specifications following the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) method. Specifically, the 0.187- in.-diameter steel wires in the pumpable J-Crib walls and 20-gauge steel panels in the HS stopping walls are integral parts of the walls and are considered to effectively confine the J-Crib or J-Seal materials. These steel elements play a significant role in reinforcing and improving the strength or support capacity of the stopping walls from a structural design perspective. Because of the high ductility of low-density J-Crib/J-Seal materials and steel elements, these walls are good at accommodating or absorbing the roof convergence (≥5% entry height), which cannot be matched by a traditional concrete block stopping wall (Figure 1). Based on the successful design and application of these stopping walls in different mines for improving roof stability and avoiding the air leakage, the authors have formulated the design methodology and verified independently by the finite element analysis (FEA) simulation technique. This design methodology combines the fundamental structural design principles with specific wall dimensions and material properties, facilitating mine engineers and government agencies to understand the in-depth working mechanism of these stopping walls.

When a new tunnelling project starts, it has been a vital tradition for decades to cast and erect master rings horizontally on a flat surface to demonstrate the compliance with dimensional tolerances. Some tenders ask for the erection of two or even three rings upon each other or repeated master ring erections at intervals throughout the project. Especially for large diameters, this is a challenging and risky task for the workforce in the segment factory. A truck-mounted crane is often necessary, and in some cases it can take up to a week to complete a master ring. The concept of virtual rings has the potential to replace this tradition by assembling master rings digitally instead of physically. This is based on a best-fit approach, considering the 3D coordinates from laser tracker measurements of segments or segment moulds. Building a virtual ring, a sub-millimeter accuracy can be achieved, the alignment of neighboring circumferential and ring joints observed, and the fit of bolt holes checked. The traditional method, on the other hand, is discussed controversially despite the significant amount of work and risks—particularly as the horizontal position of the ring and absence of gaskets do not simulate the reality in the excavated tunnel. This paper will highlight the technical aspects of virtual rings, as well as their pros and cons, illustrated by a case study from London Thames Tideway where a total of 30 physical master rings could be replaced by virtual rings.

Radomiro Tomic, the new CODELCO division, is a copper deposit located at 3000 m a.s.l. and 40 Km from Calama in northern Chile. It has total oxide reserves of 802,000,000 tonnes with an average grade of 0.59% total Cu (using a cut-off grade of 0.4% total Cu). The copper oxide ore is mainly atacamite and chrysocolla. Startup is expected to commence in December 1997 of 150,000 t/y of Cu cathodes. Future expansion to 250,000 t/a of Cu cathodes is currently being planned. The process consists of an open-pit mine, a two-stage crushing system, agglomeration with sulphuric acid and emplacement on a heap leach pad for a 45-day leaching cycle. Solvent extraction and electrowinning will produce LME "A grade cathode. A number of significant technology innovations have been incorporated into the project.

This paper describes the vibration transmissibility characteristics of mining vehicle seats under dynamic conditions in an opencast iron ore mine. Magnitude and frequency contents of vibration signals on the seat floor as well as on top of the seats were measured to record the change during transmission. The conventional rigid seats were found to resonate at about 4 Hz, which coincides with the resonance of the human spine. The pneumatic suspension seats also proved to be more efficient in attenuating the overall vibration energy transmitted from the vehicle chassis to the human body.

During the 1990’s several copper heap leach facilities treating crushed and agglomerated oxide and sulfide ore were constructed in South America. The majority of these facilities have been in operation for at least three years, during which time the operators have been able to monitor the performance of the heaps. The basis for the paper is a compilation of these operators’ experiences, leading to a discussion of the lessons learned over the past decade. Several key geotechnical issues are examined, focusing upon the integrity of the ore, drainage material and pipe network, along with the success of any inter-lift liners.

A column reactor was applied for leaching with simultaneous flotation a complex sulfide ore in ferric sulfate-solution under oxygen pressure. Elemental sulfur and the flotable, nonreacted sulfides were collected in the froth and separated from the insoluble, nonflotable gangue minerals and solid particles formed during pressure leaching. The two-stage laboratory unit, built from Corning-glass elements is described. Results of the continuous leaching/flotation experiments conducted under 20-40 psig of oxygen pressure are presented, as are supplementary batch leaching experiments with iron precipitation under 150 psig oxygen pressure. High zinc extraction to solution and near total accumulation of lead sulfate in the nonflotable fraction are easily attainable. Relatively poor flotation of pyrite is probably caused by the partial oxidation of its sulfidic sulfur to sulfate.

The St Lawrence Seaway, a deep-water canal system between Montreal and Lake Ontario, was opened for navigation on April 25, 1959. Prior to the opening of the new Seaway, small boats known as canalers and a few deep-sea carriers, primarily from Norway since World War II, were the only ships able to journey past Montreal into Lake Ontario through the old Canadian St. Lawrence canal system. Thus it was necessary for many tons of bulk and general cargo to be shipped all-rail to and from Atlantic ports or to be transhipped to and from canalers. With the opening of the new Seaway, large Great Lakes bulk carriers and a much larger percentage of the world's shipping fleet are now able to sail directly from the sea to the heart of industrial North America. In this paper, the historical events leading up to the construction of the Seaway and the physical nature of the Great Lakes transportation system are briefly reviewed. Following this, an attempt is made to evaluate the effects of the new Seaway on Canada's mineral industry. Because the Seaway has been in operation for only one season, this paper must be considered only an interim report. Because of the importance of the Seaway to iron ore, this commodity will be dealt with in detail, although the effect on other mineral commodities such as coal, petroleum, nonferrous ores, iron and steel will be mentioned. At this time the author wishes to thank the various company and government officials who provided both factual information and critical opinions.

This research contributes to BioMinE (http://biomine.brgm.fr), an integrated European Union project of the Sixth Framework Programme. The general objective of BioMinE is the development and integration of innovative, environmentally friendly, biohydrometallurgical processes for the recovery of metals from primary and secondary resources within Europe. The work presented in this paper deals with the initial plan of study on the sustainable use of solid wastes derived from bio-processing of European metal bearing resources. The approach involves solidifying the waste into cementitious waste composites analogous to controlled low-strength materials (CLSM). The aim is to achieve composites of adequate mechanical, physicochemical and environmental integrity, thus providing a sustainable solution for dealing with such bulk products which are conventionally unmarketable and therefore normally discarded to landfill. Assessment has been based on largely ?model? wastes anticipated to be similar to bio-processing wastes. These include an ochreous mine water sludge and an industrial goethite residue. The work indicates that wastes containing high iron and calcium contents, typical of products from bioleaching of concentrates, could be beneficially reformed as CLSM of appropriate compressive strength. Due to the high water contents of these composites, porosity and hydraulic conductivity were correspondingly high. Flow-through leach tests showed some resistance to immobilisation of toxic elements. Work is continuing to reduce the risk of toxic elements leaching under environmental conditions. This will include laboratory-scale encapsulated systems of CLSM, designed and tested to produce a novel type of engineered fill structure.

After the presentation of a co-authored paper, "The Cost of Transporting Ores and Raw Materials in World Markets", at the February SME meeting, one questioner commented, "You have been talking about the large shipper and ship loads. What does the small shipper do?" This paper will attempt to answer that question, at least in part. Probably the questioner hoped to hear about specific new tools and new techniques that he could apply. But one paper could only scratch the surface of the vast fund of information available; so rather than talk specifics we should take basics, that is, people, management and technology.

Work that has culminated in the manufacture and testing of a old-selective resin on a pilot-plant scale is dcscribed. Following a brief discussion about the nature of commercially available resins which identifies them as poor candidates for a gold extraction application, the improved properties of the new type of resin are illustrated using results from comparative loading tests. Further results from continuous countercurrent extractions using synthetic leach liquors and elution work using thiourea as the eluant demonstrate the superiority of the new resin over commercial resins and hence, its potential for use in a resin-in-pulp process for gold.
