Excessive heat exposure is among the health and safety hazards that have adverse effects on the mine workers. The very nature of the underground climate makes it a convenient avenue for heat generation and accumulation from several heat sources including autocompression, equipment, and heat from strata. This study investigated the effects of clothing insulation and acclimation on the thermal comfort ofmineworkers who are exposed to heat in underground working environments. Several clothing ensembles have been considered to analyze the effect of the thermal resistance of clothing on the thermal comfort of workers. To investigate the impact of the clothing insulation, the thermal comfort limit of an underground miner was calculated in the form of maximum allowable exposure time for an 8-h shift. Parametric analyses were subsequently performed using an already developed thermal comfort model using MATLAB software. The results demonstrate that clothing insulation has a significant effect on the thermal comfort of mine workers. Increase in the clothing insulation decreases the maximum allowable exposure time of mine workers. This is especially true for the new and non-acclimated workers. Since acclimatized workers can tolerate a higher level of the dehydration and are capable of losing more water by sweat per shift, the maximum allowable exposure time for the acclimated workers are higher than non-acclimated workers. These analyses have shown that acclimated workers can have more continuous work per shift compared with non-acclimated workers. For example, in an environmental condition with clothing that a nonacclimated worker cannot work more than 5 h, an acclimated worker can work a full 8-h shift.

The recent study by R. M. Hays(l) prompted the study summarized in this paper. In his Interesting paper, Mr. Hays shows fine results to be attainable by a relatively complex flowsheet on a semi-taconite, a manifestly difficult ore to treat. We obtained a semi -taconite from Minnesota, and treated this sample by wet magnetic separation alone. The device in which the separation was accomplished is the standard pilot-plant, laboratory separator in use at Magnetic Engineering Associates' laboratory (MEA) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It consists of a cylindrical space which can be magnetized by turning on the magnet of the separator. In this cylindrical space, there is a canister which provides the special configuration of the magnetic field and magnetic field gradients that MEA considers to be required. The ore pulp is made to flow through the canister while the current is on. A portion of the pulp is retained in the canister, and the rest is evolved as a non-magnetic fraction. The laboratory device is cyclic, but it accurately predicts the results obtainable by an Industrial unit of either cyclic or continuous type (moving matrix). The ore tested was 99.5°%o -325 mesh, and approximately 75% -500 mesh. The concentrate from this ore was, therefore, eminently suitable for pelletizing. In passing the ore through the magnet, we had the choice of repeatedly passing the concentrate from the first step through the operation, or of repeatedly passing the non-magnetics. A number of interesting and. important phenomena were revealed during a study of the response of beryl to sulfonate flotation (1). Perhaps the most important observation is the effect of various cations on flotation response. Experiments showed that in the vicinity of pH = 3. 0, about three ppm Fe.+++ increased recovery of leached beryl from about 60 to 100 per cent, whereas about four ppm Ca++ reduced the recovery from 60 to 2 per cent. With the exception of ferric iron, all of the other cations investigated reduced flotation recoveries drastically at this pH. As postulated in the paper "Sulfonate Flotation of Beryl", (1) even with low concentrations of polyvalent cations and sulfonate (on the order of one ppm), cation¬ sulfonates are precipitated immediately in solution. That is, blueish-white clouds .were noted to form after given additions of salts to. known solutions of sulfonate. Furthermore, it was also shown that one-hundred-fold more ferric iron than necessary to form the precipitated cloud had to be added to effect complete flotation. In other words, some form of solid ferric sulfonate was found to function as the collector in these systems. The form of the compound was suggested to be Fe (RSC3)2OH and that bonding to the surface occurs through the hydrogen of the hydroxyl. As the form of this compound was shown to be dependent on the extent of hydrolysis of ferric iron, it is to be expected that ferric iron will be unique in some pH region. Further, if the presence of hydroxyl in the neutral precipitated compound is of primary importance, then other cations should function similarly but at different values of pH, since they will hydrolyze at different concentrations of hydroxyl ion. To determine whether the premise of hydrolysis is correct, the study was extended to quartz systems lit the presence of various cations at various values of pH.

INTRODUCTION Mined underground chambers specifically designed for the purpose of storing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) at ambient temperatures have been in use for over thirty years. The first caverns were developed by Warren Petroleum of Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1948, for its plants in Texas. The basic concept of an LPG-storage cavern is to create a space in an impervious formation at a depth sufficiently below the water table so that if any movement of fluid occurs the ground water will enter rather than the gas escape from the cavern. In the past, the primary reason for LPG storage underground has been its attractive cost advantages over steel storage on the surface. At current prices the cost of storing 7.949 ML (50,000 barrels) would be equivalent, whether stored on the surface or underground; whereas 79.494 ML (500,000 barrels) of storage underground costs only one-fifth of surface storage. It is usually uneconomical to excavate less than 79.494 cu m (50,000 barrels) of storage space. The fixed costs - engineering, mainshaft and ventilation shaft - are a substantial part of the total cost, whereas the incremental costs for excavating additional storage are relatively low. Recent concern over the hazards posed by the handling and storage of LPG and liquefied natural gas (LNG) has led to a new interest in the underground storage of these gases. Deregulation, as authorized by the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (PL102-486) allows free-market competition in the electric-utility industry. As the act unfolds, though, uncertainties abound about the type, degree and direction of impacts throughout the affected economy — from fuel suppliers to electricity generators and from power distributors to energy consumers. Instead of having a familiar base of captive customers and electricity prices fixed by negotiation with state public utility commissions, utility companies are preparing for open, free-market competition. They are looking at all areas, including fuel supply, to cut costs to remain competitive. Humorous anecdotes are told about utility companies shunning insiders for senior executive positions. Instead, they are opting for people from the telephone or other industries with deregulation experience. And there are light-hearted stories about a trend away from traditional electric-company names, such as the name of a city or state followed by Edison or Power and Light, to space-age names, such as Ameren, Entergy, Illinova or Unicom. No one wants to be left behind or be perceived to be left behind.

Four computerized approaches for coal blending are described and their strengths and weaknesses are explored. Spreadsheet analysis Other than word processing, spreadsheet software is the most commonly used software. Its wide availability and ease of use are two desirable features that have led many to try to adapt it to the purpose of coal blending. These are the two main advantages of this approach. To use a spreadsheet for coal blending, each row of data represents one source of coal. Each column represents a quality of the coal, with the last column specifying the tonnage of that coal in the blend. The calculated figures are the blended qualities, which can be programmed to appear in the bottom row. A trial-and-error approach is then used to develop the best blend. Inserting any blend in the last column provides the blend characteristics at the bottom of the page. If any specifications are not met, the blend can be changed, all calculations being immediately updated. This process is repeated until all specifications are satisfied. A third advantage of this method is that it is exactly the procedure that one would go through if doing this by hand. With a spreadsheet, many more blends can be evaluated in much less time, allowing the designer to try to improve over satisfactory blends to find the best of them. The resulting improved blends or cost savings are a fourth advantage of this approach. There is only one major disadvantage of using the spread-sheet. This is that most probably the best blend is not found. As an inexpensive introduction to computer-assisted blending, which can be easily understood and cost just a few hundred dollars, this is a recommended place to begin. Computerized search Computerized search approaches represent crude first attempts at letting the computer design the blend. Unfortunately, the blends found by these programs are very often less satisfactory than those developed manually. The way these techniques work is that they design, according to some predesigned pattern, a number of different blends and then quickly evaluate them. It is then straightforward to select the best from this sample set. The quality of the results depends on the number of blends designed, the way they differ from each other (the search procedure), the number of sources available, the number of quality specifications, and the severity of the specification limits. Good results are usually obtained for small, simple problems. At best, the results obtained are inconsistent from one blend to the next. Programs of this type are advertised in the mining literature. They usually mention how many different blends are evaluated, making it clear that this is more than can be tried manually. Expert systems Expert systems use a source of information known as a knowledge base. The knowledge base, usually a set of if-then rules, attempts to reconstruct the deductive reasoning process of an expert in some job capacity. For coal blending, the usual trial-and-error process has an easily recognized pattern of rules that are followed to try to find a better blend. By following these rules, it is possible to home in on the best blend without the exhaustive search required by the previous method and without the manual manipulation of the spreadsheet approach. The use of an expert system accomplishes this. One of the rules may say something like "if BTU is out of spec, then add more in the blend from a source having a high BTU and subtract some from a source having low BTU." In other words, it goes through the trial-and-error process. The process continues until all specifications are achieved and can continue further to try to optimize the cost. Of course, less simplistic rules are also needed. One set of rules would determine maximum changes in the tonnage added or deleted to the blend or from any one source. Other rules would be needed to determine which quality to improve if two or more are out of spec. At this level, the process of building the knowledge base provides the engineer with a deeper understanding of his or her own thought processes. The advantage of obtaining better blends is clear for this approach. Two more advantages should also be apparent. One is that it follows the same common sense logic that is used when doing the blends by hand or by spreadsheet, making it easy to understand. The other is that, like the search procedure, it designs the blend rather than just analyzing manually designed blends. Thus, it has all the good features of both approaches discussed thus far while providing improved results over each. A final advantage is the ease of use and ease of development. The expert system shells that are on the market are very easy to use and can be run on microcomputers. Linear programming Linear programming is an algebraic tool that solves a set of linear equations to yield an optimal solution to a problem. The optimal solution is based on the linear model so the results are only as good as the ability of the linear model to accurately portray the reality of the problem situation. It is fortunate for the coal blending problem that a linear model can be devel¬oped that reflects exactly the problem that is required. The gold-silver deposits of the northern Primorye region are located in the eastern part of the East Sikhote-Alin volcanic belt, where the belt overlaps the Kema island-arc terrain of the Aptian-Albian age. There have been four deposits and numerous mineralization points found in the NE-trending Kema metallogenic belt that is about 1000 km long and 100 km wide. The known mineralization is of epithermal type, controlled by faults, and concentrated in quartz, quartz-fluorite-adularia, and, less commonly, sulfide-quartz vein systems hosted by the Upper Cretaceous-Lower Tertiary volcanic rocks. The vein systems extend for hundreds meters along strike, varying from tens centimeters to 50-60 meters in width. They are surrounded by wide zones of low-temperature hydrothermal alteration containing some gold-silver mineralization for which the commercial value was not studied during the early exploration. The ore bodies contain from 1 to 50-80 ppm of Au and from 1 to 1000 ppm of Ag. Gold is native, associated with quartz, and represented by particles from tens of microns to 1 mm in size. Silver occurs in native form as a constituent of argentite, pyrargyrite, stephanite, and other sulfosalts. The test work carried out for three vein systems 20 years ago showed that gold might be easily and almost completely recovered from the ore by cyanide treatment. The paper describes the geology and mineralogy of the deposits, Salut and Primorskoye, that are the most studied properties of the Kema belt. It also presents the data available on disseminated gold-silver mineralization in stockworks, altered explosive breccias, and wide zones of low-temperature hydrothermal alteration. This mineralization should be explored for possible exploitation as large open-pit, heap-leach deposits.

Eldorado Gold Corporation of Vancouver, B.C. owns and operates three gold mines. The São Bento underground gold mine in Minas Gerais State, Brazil produced 105,907 ounces in1997. The La Colorada and La Trinidad open pit, heap leach mines in Mexico produced over 83,000ounces in 1997. With a deteriorating gold market plaguing the industry throughout 1997 Eldorado had to take critical measures at each mine to enhance gold production while lowering cash operating costs. Each mine had its own unique problems to confront. This case study will discuss three distinct courses of action taken at the three mine sites.

Research over a period of ten years resulted in the development of an efficient automatic ore feed regulator for mill grinding circuits. The facilities that a large mining company gave the inventor made it possible to develop the control apparatus under actual mill operating conditions. The Littlewood Regulator automatically determines the optimum power input at which a mill should operate, and controls the rate of ore feed to maintain this optimum power for any predetermined operating conditions. It is to be noted that the optimum power varies with many factors such as ball, rod, and mill liner wear, therefore the regulator is designed to automaticall keep itself properly calibrated. To efficiently control the rate of ore feed of a mill grinding circuit the regulator analyzes and interprets all power changes of the mill motor. The critical electrical measurements for this type of control are made possible by a patented device that has the ability to detect and integrate minute changes in power. In ball mill operation the small but significant changes in power serve to select the rate of ore feed in accordance with the rate at which ore accumulation takes place within the mill, and in rod mill operation they serve to select the rate of ore feed in accordance with the degree of rod spread.

Iran was a lodestone for the attention of industrial countries and companies wanting to share in its industrial development during the last two decades and particularly after 1972. Prior to 1972, most industrial projects in the private sector were on a relatively small scale and could be carried out in reasonably orderly fashion in spite of limitations of a primitive infrastructure and meager indigenous supply of managerial and technical skills. People with these skills could be found but not in abundance, and many of them were total¬ly engaged in various government ministries and projects. Thus it was that nearly all private sector industries, even long-established ones, required one or more foreigners to give guidance. A barite mine and processing facility was brought on line by Dresser Industries in 1960 without serious operational problems. A few expatriate experts were able to select and train a stable group of staff and production people and establish sound management principles for continued growth. The huge and increasing oil revenues after 1973 gave superficial credence to ideas of the Iranian government that the country could easily finance the jump into the industrial 20th century. All necessary skills and equipment not available in Iran would be imported, and intensive training programs would prepare Iranians for operating the new facilities. Large projects for steel production, copper production, oil refining, petrochemical production, cement production, and others were started or expanded. These are basic industries that consume substantial quantities of refractories. Studies made in 1972 indicated that the existing industries plus expanded and new projects scheduled to come into production would lead to a market sufficiently large to justify a refractory producing plant. Concurrent studies of raw material sources showed that clay, the largest tonnage item, would be locally available; the other raw materials would be imported. Iran Refractories Company (IREFCO) was founded in 1973 and started production in 1976.

One hundred and eleven pyrite samples from 3 porphyry-type deposits in the Canadian cordillera were analyzed (many in duplicate) by AA spectrophotometry for Co, Ni, Cu, Pb, Zn and Mn. All elements have density distributions that are lognormal or combinations of lognormal populations. Co and Ni in pyrites show zonal patterns that relate generally to mineralogical zones in the porphyry systems, particularly if contoured as the Co/Ni ratio. High Cu values in pyrites also correlate with Cu-rich mineralogical zones. Other elements studied appear less regular in their distribution patterns, although Zn highs in pyrite seem to occur sporadically near the margins of porphyry systems. In particular cases, pyrite geochemistry shows potential as an exploration tool to aid in target definition for detailed exploration.

Through the USGS National Coal Availability pro-gram, two San Juan Basin studies have been completed. The study areas are in the northwest Bisti field, Fruitland Formation and in the eastern Standing Rock field, Menefee Formation. Original resources are 4.66 Gt and 3.46 Gt (5.14 billion stand 3.82 billion st), respectively, in the Bisti and Standing Rock areas. Bisti coal resources are greatly reduced by the Bisti-De-Na-Zin wilderness area (1.13 Gt (1.25 billion st)). Technological restrictions remove 31% from Standing Rock original resource. Available resources are 60% (2.79 Gt(3.07 billion st)) of the Bisti original resource and66% (2.26 Gt (2.49 billion st)) of the original Standing Rock resource.

The Acid Drainage Technology Initiative-Metal Mining Sector (ADTI-MMS) has established a Pit Lake Committee to enhance the science and understanding for the long-term management of pit lakes. Participation in this new committee is from members of federal and state agencies, industry, and academia, including numerous individuals representing 10 states. Work has begun on a pit lake literature search and review, database, classification, and sampling and monitoring procedures document. Coordination with the International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) has been established. Future work will include preparing a prediction and assumption verification document, a report identifying variables upon which water quality is dependent, and an applied remediation technologies document, including an evaluation of the effects of backfilling.

Bismuth, one of the heavier chemical elements, is a pinkish metalloid that is chemically related to antimony. It is a byproduct of lead and tungsten extraction and, to a lesser extent, of copper and tin extraction. Antimony is a metalloid and less heavy chemical element, an extraction coproduct of metals such as lead, silver and gold. While both bismuth and antimony are metalloids, their major uses are as chemical compounds. Introduction The theoretical analysis of tumbling mill energetics and performance has largely neglected mill dimensionality, and, in particular, the importance of the length/diameter (L/D) ratio. This is in spite of the fact that practice varies substantially: geographically, for semi-autogenous and autogenous mills, as between North America and South Africa/Scandinavia, and historically, for overflow ball mills, for which the L/D ratio has increased significantly from the earliest small mills to the largest mills currently. The present study is concerned primarily with the influence of the L/D ratio on the design and operation of overflow ball mills, on the occurrence of the overload phenomenon, and on the limits, if any, it may impose on mill capacities because of critical pulp axial velocity limits. It will be shown that the shape factor is of major importance in this area and that its adjustment to the extent that this is practical should remove the diameter limitations previously postulated for this mill type. Dimensionality in mill design Ball mill shape factors in the period prior to 1927 (Taggart, 1927) averaged 1.1/1 for 29 center discharge mills and 1.0/1 for 30 peripheral discharge mills. With the resumption of new plant construction after the 1930s depression, the Morenci concentrator continued the 1/1 ratio with its 3.1 x 3.1 m (10 x 10 ft) mills. The ratio was increased progressively from then on, reaching 1.6 and 1.8/1 for the largest overflow mills currently. As shown recently (Arbiter, 1989), this is in sharp contrast to autogenous and SAG mill shapes, for which the ratio averages 0.4 in North America. On the other hand, South African practice, starting at the turn of the century with autogenous mills having 4/1 ratios, moved toward 1/1 until recently, when a 2.5/ 1 ratio mill was installed. The reasons given for such divergent practice for mill shape factors are in some respects contradictory and generally inconclusive. The most complete discussion from a practical viewpoint (Dor and Bassarear, 1982) is limited to primary SAG and autogenous mills. Considerations of ball mill dimensionality have had a twofold direction. On the one hand, it has been argued that ball mill efficiencies should increase with increasing diameter and that the specific energy for a particular grind should be reduced accordingly. An inadvertent test of this idea at the Bougainville operation (Burns and Erskine, 1983) resulted in drastic underpowering, which led to failure to reach design capacity until additional mills were installed. This can be taken as strong evidence against any increase in efficiency with diameter. In another direction, it has been argued (Arbiter and Harris, 1982, 1983) that there is a limit to ball mill diameters because of the demonstrable limit to axial flow velocities evident in the overload phenomenon, which as a fact is incontrovertible. But that it places a limit on mill diameters overlooks the evidence given below that appropriate variation in the L/D ratio will permit major increases in diameter, limited only by constructional or economic factors. The present study was directed toward quantifying the overload phenomenon through examination of the influence of mill dimensionality variation and mill operating variables on its occurrence. It is shown that varying the operating conditions, specifically the load fraction and the fraction critical speed, can reduce the risk of overload for existing operations; while appropriate decreases in the L/D ratio can minimize the risk in the design of new circuits. Ball mill overload Ball mill overload is a consequence of the approach to a critical velocity with increasing feed rates or circulating loads. Although the effect has been known for over 50 years, there have been no previous attempts to quantify it. The following description of the ball mill as a flow system is the preliminary to a quantitative analysis: 1) In the absence of a ball load, axial flow of pulp through a mill resembles open channel flow, except for disturbances near the shell due to shell/lifter rotation. 2) For a given ball load (Lf), the void fraction available for pulp hold-up (H) for the ascending portion of the load is approximately 0.4 Lf. In the descending portion, it is greater than this and increases with fraction critical speed (Fc) because of load expansion. 3) Increasing the feed rate increases pulp hold-up and progressively fills the available void space. At a critical flow rate, which depends on system geometry, hydraulic head and pulp rheology, void filling reaches its limit; a pool forms rapidly and fills available space outside the ball load and up to the overflow level. Prior to this, pulp discharges mainly along the ascending rim of the overflow. 4) For a small mill (Lo et al., 1990), it has been shown that with increasing feed rates the critical filling is at or near 50% of the mill volume. Power drops rapidly when this level is reached, as required by the torque formula. 5) The transition to overload is associated with the following phenomena: a) The decrease in power draw. b) Damping of mill sound. c) Reduced comminution of coarser feed sizes, probably due to reduced direct impact in the presence of a pool. d) Increased circulating loads, which further intensify the overload, and increased density of cyclone underflows, which can lead to roping. e) Conditions beyond overload are not known because feed rates are not delibelrately increased beyond this point. f) The existence of the phenomenon limits the capacity of a mill with a fixed set of operating conditions and can prevent the balancing of hard ore feed rate decreases by increases in soft ore rates.

The Masbate Province, Philippines, has been a gold producer for many years. Several gold properties were profitably operating until the outbreak of World War II in 1941. One of these properties was the Masbate Consolidated Mining Company that at the time showed an impressive production rate of more than 4,000 metric tons of ore per day and one of the lowest milling costs on record in the country at that time. Interesting enough, t was the milling equipment left abandoned at Masbate that gave birth to one of the giant copper producers in ASIA. In 1955, Atlas Consolidated Mining and Development Corporation started a new operation at its copper property in Cebu with the seven 2.4m 0 x 3m long (8'0 x 10' long) ball mills left abandoned at the old Masbate Gold Mine. Now, 25 years later, Atlas is processing over 100,000 metric tons of copper ore per day through its three copper concentrators, and, the seven old mills are still grinding, copper ores now.

Two-dimensional, finite-difference elastic modeling aids in planning an optimum seismic-acquisition scheme to define the extent of subsurface cavities resulting from in situ gasification. To understand the seismic effects of a cavity, two models are compared and contrasted. Model A consists of a low-velocity layer (LVL) in a half space; Model B contains a rectangular water-filled cavity in the LVL. Amplitude differences are the dominant effect on the surface records for each model. Cavity resonance and diffraction effects are more definitive in vertical seismic profiles (VSP's) and in a "snapshot" of the wave field. Interpretation and subtraction of corresponding records for both models shows the need for pre- and post-gasification seismic recording. Also VSP data are more informative than surface records.
