The Escondida copper mine is located in the northern Atacama Desert of Chile at an elevation of 3,050 m. approximately 160 km southeast of the port of Antofagasta. The mine is a joint venture between BHP-Billiton, Rio Tinto, a Japanese consortium and the International Finance Corporation. The most recent expansion, Laguna Seca, has increased the total capacity to the level of 220,000t/d ore throughput. The ore body, a typical porphyry deposit, is situated on the major Chilean west fissure fault system and contains primary sulphide ore grades between 0.6% and 2.0% copper. Primary sulphide mineralization consists of chalcocite pyrite, chalocopyrite, bornite and covellite. Significant copper oxides overly the sulphides in many areas.

The Surface Mining and Reclamation Act of 1977, PL 95-87 (The Act) granted the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) the duty of collecting fees from the active coal mining activities to be used in abating the hazards associated with abandoned coal mines. Since the passage of the Act, OSM has been instrumental in closing a multiple of mine hazards and in full cooperation with the states involved. Complete mine closures range from simply filling a subsidence hole to exodic designs costing thousands of dollars, such as in the case of the Portal Park swimming pool in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Portal Park olympic sized swimming pool was built over an abandoned coal mine by a group of local citizens and given to the city of Colorado Springs. This pool receives the largest number of users each year. During the past four years, OSM has abated six mine related hazards in and around the pool. During the summer of 1982, the pool started tipping causing the pool waters to run out the west end. This pool tipping and the associated cave-in problems caused great concern to the city and the local users. This citizens concern generated a request from the city for OSM to assist in checking out the pool problems. Early in 1983, OSM initiated a driling program to investigate the subsurface voids. This drilling effort revealed several large voids within a few feet of the pool deck, with all voids inundated with ground water. Therefore, the void filling method favored the hydraulic backfilling needed to be confined to the area under the pool. This confining problem lead to the development of the gravel bulkhead cutoff walls to confine the backfilling effort to the areas under the swimming pool.

Homestake Mining Company has developed an estimating model, based on other closed projects, to audit and prepare new estimating plans. The results of recent closure audits reveal that the original budgets were often insufficient to cover the present expected expenses. Some of the major areas where technical challenges and costs are increasing include heap leach pile detoxification and rinsing, tailings dam closure, water management and treatment, abatement of contaminated soils, and many others. Risk and sensitivity analysis of each category will develop a level of confidence in the estimate and allow management to focus on the pertinent issues. Periodic audits of closure plans and costs throughout the life of mine serves to focus management attention on the complete costs of production. This will result in improved overall planning and management, and reduce the number of missed opportunities for savings.

In the past several decades, many major equipment manufacturers have ventured into developing new technology for underground hard rock excavation. This includes variety of configurations for full and partial face mobile excavation units. Mining industry prefers machines that can excavate noncircular, flat invert profiles and be able to make tight turns in hard rock. The need to use disc cutters for cutting hard rock has impeded the development of such machines due to the need for gripper system or large mass of a machine to support the force requirements of the disc cutters. Most of the prior attempts have been partially successful and the operations have faced some practical limits and challenges. Among the units that have been successfully used, one can name mobile miner, which was used for rock excavation in some projects. A redesigned mobile miner, called the “Remote Vein Miner,” or RVM, has been developed by Epiroc for underground hard rock mining in Hecla’s Lucky Friday Mine. This equipment potentially opens numerous opportunities for innovation in civil tunneling projects, where the operational flexibility and accessibility of a TBM’s limited tunnel path, design of the profile, and cost are limiting factors. This paper explores the application of the RVM in tunneling projects, its advantages and possible areas of innovation in tunnel planning and design.

Maximizing production of oil from sandstone petroleum reservoirs is aided by use of non-damaging drilling and workover/completion fluids. Various tests, such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microsccpy, petrographic microscopy, porosity and permeability are conducted on core samples. Several fluids are selected, on the basis of these results, for return permeability tests. A report is then written giving the results of all tests, potential reservoir problems, and recommended practices for exploiting the reservoir.

"The Ordos coal field is located in the northern midwestern part of China (Fig. 1). Since the mid- 1980s, it has been developed into one of the major coal fields in the world, producing approximately 833 Mt (918 million st) of raw coal in 2013. There were once more than 400 coal mines operating in the region. However, due to the combination of market conditions and implementation of government consolidation policies, the number of coal mines operating in recent years has been reduced considerably, with increasing output.The surface of the Ordos coal field is covered with loess and alluvium layers of varying thicknesses. In many areas, their combined thickness may amount to as much as 100 m (328 ft) underlain by thin bedrock. Many loess and alluvium are aquifers receiving water from rainfalls. There are also gullies of varying depths crossing the coal field. Figure 2 is a typical stratigraphic column highlighting the coal seams and roof and floor rocks of interest.In conjunction with the development of highproductivity coal mines, numerous ground control instrumentation tests have been conducted in the operating longwall panels. Analyses of the results of those tests offer the opportunity to understand the effect of wide-ranging mining and geological factors on the overburden movement. For this reason, trips were made to coal mines of interest to interview mine management and collect their unpublished internal research reports on ground control instrumentation. In addition, literature searches on published thesis/dissertations and papers in the professional journals were performed. Finally, data from a total of 95 fully mechanized longwall panels were collected. The instrumentation involved primarily the monitoring of hydraulic pressures of longwall shields, from which the first roof weighting and first roof caving interval and periodic roof weighting and periodic roof weighting interval were identified and determined. Some panels also included measurements of roofto- floor convergence at the face, roof strata bed separation, longwall face sloughage and the height of caving and fractured zones in the overburden. Those 95 panels were located in 20 coal mines (Fig. 1) congregated along both sides of the Wulunmulun River with the following mining and geological conditions. All together those 20 mines produced more than 224 Mt (246 million st) in 2013, accounting for approximately 27 percent of the total coal production in the Ordos coal field:1. Period of mining: 1991-2013.2. Mining methods: All panels employed the one slice, full-seam natural-caving longwall mining method like those practiced in the United States. All panels were developed with a twoentry system with a single-row of chain pillars measuring 20- x 20-m (65.6- x 98.4-ft) wide.3. Coal seams (Fig. 3): Coal in Ordos coal field is high-quality steam coal, that is very low in sulfur, potassium and ash, but high in Btu. Data were collected in panels mined in a total of 10 seams with 82 panels in four seams and the remaining 13 panels in six seams. The first six seams (1-2, 2-2, 3-1, 3-2, 4-2, 5-2) were mined by the Shenhua Coal Group (the world’s largest coal company) and the #4-2, 5-2, 6R, 62, and 62R seams were mined by both the Shenhua and Yitai Coal groups. In each coal group, the sequence of mining was in descending order. For example, in Shenhua Group, the top seam 1-2 was mined first, followed by the 2-2, 3-1, 3-2, and 4-2 seam in that descending order. In Fig. 3, the top-down sequence of coal seams is listed from left to right in each coal mine group. All seams were near horizontal with dip angles less than 3°."

The mining industry appears to be slowly rebounding. But many individuals and company officials are still smarting from the beating they received during the recent recession. As a result, companies have taken the "lean and mean" approach. As pointed out at the Oct. 24-26, 1984 SME-AIME Fall Meeting in Denver, CO, companies are placing more emphasis on optimizing their operations through more efficient mining and processing technologies and equipment. Empathizing with the mining industry's woes was the meeting's welcoming luncheon speaker, John D. Withrow, Jr., executive vice president product development for Chrysler Corp. Withrow paralleled Chrysler's problems of a few years ago with the current problems facing the US mining industry. He said Chrysler's come-back centered around its engineering and technical personnel, who regained "their seat at the head table." "In short," Withrow said, "we had lost the competitive edge. By cutting costs and people and improving our products we got everybody to believe we could." The 2700 participants at the Fall Meeting attended technical sessions geared toward turning mining back into a productive and profitable industry. Sessions and symposia included papers on precious metals extraction, crushing and grinding innovations, geomechanics, environmental control, health and safety, and various commodities. This article briefly highlights some of the papers presented. To order preprints of these technical papers, see ME, December 1984, pages 1620 and 1621. Computers Gain Mining Acceptance High tech has reached mining. As evidenced by many papers, computers have become valuable tools in many applications. These include tailings ponds operation and waste management; truck dispatching; mine design, simulation, and scheduling; monitoring; and reclamation. Mine planning is generally labor intensive and requires a considerable amount of the planner's time. P. K. Chatterjee, X. Chung, and Y. Jianjy described a computer-generated interactive graphics approach to under-ground coal mine planning that lessens the manhours involved in producing plans. The computer program examined exploratory borehole information. This included coal seam thickness, tonnage, quality constraints, and the nature of their distribution. Layout designs were then initiated and a probabilistic simulation performed to determine production levels of different extraction strategies. The interactive graphics approach gives planners the ability to quickly evaluate several layout alternatives and select the best one. For surface coal mines, M. A. White, of Arch Minerals Corp., explained several computer programs that aided in his company's surface mine plans. Several drill hole database and modeling pack¬ages are available. But Arch tech¬nicians developed specific pro¬grams for model strip areas. They were used to form long-term pro¬jections for various area and semi¬area stripping operations. They also generated reports on yard¬age, tonnage, quality, and ratio in¬formation. The information is used in budgeting, to compare mine plans, and to analyze acqui¬sition candidates. While computer-based truck dispatching systems have been used in mining for some time, earlier systems were run on ex¬pensive mainframe or high per¬formance minicomputers. As such, computer-based truck dis¬patching systems have been too expensive for all but the largest mines. Recently, however, a microcomputer-based system, af¬fordable to smaller mine opera¬tors, has become technologically feasible. Y. C. Kim and W. E. Kolb re¬ported on a simulated microcom¬puter system that uses strategi¬cally placed signposts in the pit area to automatically detect truck movements. A microprocessor in the signpost sends information to the microcomputer. The computer determines the truck's assign¬ment and alerts the dispatcher. He radios the driver his assign¬ment. In addition to the technical pa¬pers, an introductory short course on microcomputers was offered at the meeting. L. M. Kass and J. P. Shallow ore deposits are mined by surface methods but a depth is reached in the case of most deposits after which underground methods are applied for the extraction of the remaining ore. The determination of this depth and its analysis is the subject of this paper. In order to determine transition depth from open-pit to underground mining on the basis of the allowable and economically feasible overall stripping ratios, an economic-mathematical equation is first introduced. Using the achieved equation and an analytical procedure on a particular two-dimensional hypothetical tabulate deposit, an effective formula is then established. The formula introduced here, together with the procedure adopted, could be used in all similar mining situations by the mining design engineer.

Column flotation is finding increasing use in the flotation of copper, molybdenum and other heavy metals and coal. Columns have proven operational, cost and metallurgical advantages which caused us to investigate their use in the proposed Escondida flowsheet. A comparative pilot plant test with 35 tons of ore showed that one column can replace three stages of cleaning and result in a significantly higher concentrate grade with no loss in recovery.

Dozer operators are frequently exposed to whole-body vibration (WBV) during the execution of their work. Occupational exposure to WBV in Indian surface coal mines was evaluated by measuring vibration intensity and duration of exposure. A triaxial accelerometer was placed on the operator seat surface for taking the readings. Based on frequency-weighted root mean square acceleration equivalent to 8-hr shift duration, i.e., (A(8)) all dozer operators have exceeded an Exposure Action Value (EAV) of 0.5 m/s2 , and 90% of dozers did not exceed Exposure Limit Value (ELV) of 1.15 m/s2 . Based on Vibration Dose Value (VDV (8)), all dozer operators have exceeded Exposure Limit Value (EAV) of 9.1 m/s1.75, but no dozer operators have exceeded Exposure Limit Value (ELV) of 21 m/s1.75. Further, an epidemiological study was performed for identifying the extent of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among dozer operators. For the detailed study, 42 dozer operators and 22 controls were selected from 2 surface coal mines. The control group was not exposed to WBV. It was seen from the cross-sectional study that pain in the lower back was predominantly higher (83.33%) in the exposed group when compared with the control group (31.81%). Likewise, pain in the neck (47.61%), shoulder (42.85%), knees (42.85%), and ankle (11.90%) was higher in the exposed group than that of the control group (22.71%, 0%, 45.45%, and 4.54%). A significant observation among the exposed group was that there was degradation in the quality of life. The outcome of the study would assist in monitoring and mitigation of machinery-induced vibration diseases (MIVD) in India and generally applicable to most of the mechanized mines as well. However, comprehensive studies are still needed to enunciate the magnitude extent.

The terms environment and environmental control, when used in today's context, generally imply to the average individual, something to do with pollution and pollution control. These latter terms, likewise, impart visions of fouled air and dirty water attributable largely to the industrial segment of American society. We have been conditioned, by various means, over the past ten years to equate environ¬mental control with pollution control. We have been trained to think of industrial environmental control programs as efforts conceived only to comply with one or more of the recently imposed pollution control regulations. Almost automatically we; approach consideration of environmental control with a degree of pessimism that is we assume that pollution prompted the control program. It is the purpose of this discussion to demonstrate that environmental control. at least as it exists and has existed within the crushed stone industry, involves far more than simply control or reduction of air and water pollution. It involves a dedication to the enhancement of each of the several "mini-environments" which together comprise the total world surrounding any given crushed stone operation. Environmental control, exercised properly, is an optimistic, constructive, forward-looking, enhancing type of activity. It is a function which has been, and should continue to be, willingly and expectantly undertaken by informed management personnel. In short, environmental control. is an activity from which both industry and society can and should benefit.

"INTRODUCTION The Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) Far Site Conventional Facilities are proposed to be sited at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) located within the former Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota. The project involves excavation and support of three large caverns which will house four 10 kT fiducial volume liquid argon (LAr) neutrino detectors and cryogenic equipment, as well as numerous ancillary connecting drifts and chambers. This paper describes the geological setting of the project, the geotechnical investigation undertaken nearly a mile underground and the challenges associated with collection of reliable data in a high stress and geologically complex environment. The layout for the new facility will be presented, along with a description of some of the constraints that will impact construction, including shaft access and working within an operating research facility. THE LBNF PROJECT The global neutrino physics community is coming together to develop a leading-edge, dual-site experiment for neutrino science and proton decay studies, the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). The facility required for this experiment, the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF), will be an internationally designed, coordinated and funded program, comprising the world's highest-intensity neutrino beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Batavia, IL and the infrastructure necessary to support massive deep underground cryogenic detectors 800 miles (1,300 km) downstream at the LBNF Far Site at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), in Lead, South Dakota. The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment is expected to achieve transformative discoveries, making definitive determinations of neutrino properties, the dynamics of the supernovae that produced the heavy elements necessary for life, and the possibility of proton decay. Neutrinos created by the LBNF beamline will travel on the 1,300 km (800 mi) path shown in Figure 1 leading straight through the earth's crust to intercept DUNE's massive, cutting-edge neutrino detector at the Sanford Lab. No tunnel is needed as neutrinos pass easily through soil and rock rarely interacting with the matter. The DUNE far detector will consist of four modules, each of which will be housed in a cryostat containing 17,000 metric tons of liquid argon target material, providing a 10kT fiducial volume. The LBNF Far Site Conventional Facilities project will excavate and fit out a set of four caverns 4850 ft underground in which to place them."

Galvanic corrosion between dissimilar materials, such as steel and graphite, leads to safety concerns for many industries, including mining. In this study, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) analyzed rock samples from two mines in the United States that exhibit electrochemical properties similar to graphite through laboratory measurements to investigate their observed in-situ influence on underground metal support. Uniform corrosion rates of mild steel coupons, inflatable bolt coupons, and friction bolt coupons galvanically coupled to rock samples were obtained using both potentiodynamic polarization and zero resistance ammetry. Increased uniform corrosion rates were witnessed between the coupled rock and steel system, over those of just the steel alone. Surface analysis of the metal samples showed the presence of pitting corrosion, reflective of bolt samples removed from partner mines. Corrosion pitting of ground support structures in contact with graphitic rock in underground mines poses safety concerns for mine workers by increasing the rate of corrosion and decreasing bolt strength over time and will be further investigated for intervention strategies.

Economical and environmental pressures necessitates the recovery of the minus 0.6 mm x 0 coal generated by todays mining machines. This size fraction, dependent on the type of production unit, maintenance of the production unit, and the Hardgrove Grindability Index, can be a substantial portion of the Preparation Plant feed. Historically, dewatering of the collected 0.6 mm x 0 product has often been rather expensive and marginal with respect to surface moisture reduction. The Freeman United Crown II Preparation Plant more than adequately demonstrates that the continuous scroll type centrifuge can dewater 0.6 mm x 0 coal to acceptable surface moisture levels.

Theoretical investigation and laboratory experimentation have shown a great potential for jet fan ventilation in mines. Jet fans, also called induction fans due to the induction effect of the fluid jet to ventilate headings, may have particular application in remote-controlled production operations. This paper summarizes ongoing research using a scaled laboratory model. The model uses water as a fluid medium and simulates a typical 25m long heading of 1.5mx6m cross-section. The effects of various nozzle positions and designs have been investigated by using still photography as a tool for flow visualization. It is also found that the use of jets in combination with line curtains has enhanced the overall ventilating effect in the model entry.

As part of a funded project we have completed a comparative literature survey of the US regional Proterozoic geology. For our com¬parative study model we used the geological settings of the very large pitchblende deposits in Saskatchewan, Canada and the Northern Terri¬tory of Australia. These occur in a variety of Archean and Lower Proterozoic host rocks, at and below a regional unconformity that is capped by subhorizontal Middle to Upper Proterozoic conti¬nental sedimentary rocks. We find that there have been recorded in some parts of the US similar unconformable sequences of Middle to Upper Proterozoic continental sedimentary rocks that overlie older basement rocks.

O’Okiep Copper Co. Ltd.’s 45-kt/month (49,600-stpm) concentrator at the Spektakel mine in South Africa is comprised largely of reconditioned equipment from the old O’Okiep mill, which operated from 1940-1975. When combined with modern approaches to layout, crushing, classification, and flotation, a simple-to-operate plant was constructed at a cost of only $3.2 million.

NTRODUCTION In the mining industry, a "drill jumbo" is a drilling unit equipped with one or more rock drills and mounted on a mechanical conveyance. Jumbos range from single¬drill ring drills mounted on simple steel skids to sophisti¬cated multiple-drill units mounted on diesel engine powered carriers and equipped with automatic controls and sound-abatement cabs. Individual types of jumbos usually are designed for specific tasks such as fan drilling in sublevel caving operations. Some units, such as development jumbos, can be utilized for several functions in addition to their normal applications, e.g., for production drilling in room-and-pillar operations, stoping in cut-and-fill mining, etc. Mine operators can purchase individual components from manufacturers, assembling these components into a jumbo suitable for specific conditions. However, this requires that mine personnel have good engineering and mechanical abilities. Although manufacturers of jumbos maintain facilities for designing machines to meet con¬ditions created by new mining methods and unusual ap¬plications, the cost of the engineering and experimental work for new types of jumbos should be evaluated in terms of both costs and benefits; it may be advantageous to plan the mining operation so that existing and proven units can be utilized. GENERAL SELECTION CRITERIA Since the operating conditions vary in underground mines, the design of a jumbo must be selected to cope with the individual characteristics of the mine. The necessary considerations include access space into the working areas, grades expected to be encountered, radii of the curves, ambient temperatures, the characteristics of the rock, the acidity or alkalinity (pH rating) of the mine water, etc. Access to Mine Workings The mine workings must be accessible to the selected jumbo. Frequently, a jumbo must be disassembled at least partially to pass through the mine shafts. There¬fore, a bolted construction allowing disassembly into pieces of suitable size and weight is desirable in most applications. Type of Undercarriage Generally, a crawler-type undercarriage should not be used in trackless mines having acidic mine water. The acidic water causes an electrolytic action between the individual crawler parts and causes rapid corrosion and early failures. Propulsion A two-wheel drive on a pneumatic-tired jumbo is marginal for grades exceeding 12%. A four-wheel drive unit with good weight distribution is capable of operat¬ing on grades of up to 35%. At least 30% of the gross vehicle weight (GVW) should be carried on the steering axle; otherwise, the steering tires may not have sufficient traction on loose road surfaces and may "plow" instead of steer. To assure stable operation in mines with steep grades, the height of the center of gravity of the jumbo should be considered. It should not make the unit prone to rolling over on the steep grades that may be encoun¬tered. Turning Ability In confined working areas, a skid-steering or crawler unit has the best maneuverability. An articulated carrier is preferable when base-rotated parallel booms are being utilized. A rigid-frame jumbo with automotive steering is compact and economical, having lower maintenance requirements than the other two types. However, the turning radius of a rigid-frame unit is wider than either the skid-steering or articulated units, and this wider turning radius may be detrimental in mines with narrow drifts. JUMBO COMPONENTS Rail Undercarriages A mine with a rail-transportation system generally utilizes drill jumbos that are mounted on rail-type under¬carriages. With a light load and good weight distribu¬tion, this carrier may consist of a simple two-axle four-wheel platform onto which the boom-mounting brackets are attached. As the depth of the round and the penetration rates increase, the weight of the equip¬ment installed on the chassis also increases. The greatest problem with a heavy overhung load is balancing the carrier; a three-boom unit may require a substantial amount of counterweighting to maintain an acceptable 70% to 30% axle-load balance. Although lengthening the wheelbase helps balance the unit, a long wheelbase increases the turning radius, often creating problems on curves and sometimes requiring a swivel truck-type chassis. A good rule of thumb for a simple four-wheel undercarriage is to maintain a wheelbase length to track gage-width ratio that does not exceed 2.5 to 1.0. For a larger ratio, a swivel truck should be utilized. Swing-out outriggers or roof jacks help keep a jumbo in place during the drilling cycle. Usually, a rail-mounted jumbo is not self-propelled. Instead, it is maneuvered into place by a locomotive. Occasionally, several headings are being advanced in close proximity, and a self-propelled jumbo is con¬venient. In electrified mines, such a jumbo utilizes conventional battery-powered traction gear; in dieselized mines, hydrostatic drive components offer good flexi¬bility. Breccia pipes are vertical pipe-like columns of rocks that provide conduits for fluid flow and open spaces for mineral precipitation, hence are focus areas for exploration. In the Gallinas Mountains, Lincoln County, New Mexico, there is recorded production of Cu, Pb, Ag, F, Fe, REE (as bastnäsite), and Au from 1902 to 1980, but no production reported from the breccia pipes. Previous studies described the occurrence of REE in breccia pipes, but their transportation and deposition controls are still unclear. The aim of this research is to characterize the magmatic-hydrothermal breccia pipes in order to understand the geochemical and physical conditions of deposition of REE and gold in the breccia pipes found in the Gallinas Mountains. There are more than 20 exposed breccia pipes that form a NE-trending belt about 3–5 kilometers, mostly gray-brown and consist of angular- to sub-rounded rock fragments, some host high concentrations of REE (80,500 ppm total REE) and Au (175 ppb). Preliminary studies suggest they are magmatic and intruded into the host rock and, subsequently, hydrothermal fluids precipitated F-REE and Au along the edges of some breccia pipes. More studies are underway to test this hypothesis.

During last year's AIME meeting in New Orleans, Deepak Malhotra and I were discussing some of the topics that would be presented in this Symposium. It seemed appropriate that along with papers on specific reagent and flocculant types, we should address research management aspects of new product development. This development is a long, arduous task that requires a significant technical and fiscal commitment by the chemical company and potential users. A flow chart depicting the research process is shown in Figure 1. The sequence of events are plotted on an undefined time line. Our experience has shown that it takes 3-5 years to complete a typical reagent development project. A new project starts with an idea of how to do something better. The ideas range from relatively simple product modifications to opportunities created by technological change. An example of this is the use of flocculants in tailings operations to close the water recycle loop. The change was brought about by the need to conserve water and comply with environmental statutes. The result was the development and wide-spread use of synthetic polymers to help in solid-liquid separation. More recently the ups and downs of oil prices have led to development of coal water slurries as an alternative to fuel oil. The slurries contain high levels of chemicals (up to 3%) to insure proper stability and burn characteristics. There are technical changes under way right now that may lead to ideas for other new products. One exciting source of new technology is the ability to manipulate genetic material of microbes to select for specific capabilities. This has evolved by leaps and bounds over the past 5 years. Biologically assisted leaching and removal of wastewater impurities are two possible end uses. I'm sure that there are many others. The ideas can originate anywhere and are often half-baked at first, but to lead to new products they must be refined to provide project definition and eventually a research plan. A chemical ,development project cannot be started without approval to commit the company's resources. The internal selling job is often very difficult. The company must see clear financial benefits in order to launch efforts that may not pay off for many years. It is critical to project the total market, profitability, eventual market share, and timing of introduction of the new product. There is much uncertainty in this and the research manager is often skating on thin ice to retain his credibility. Once we obtain support from upper management, the research team is assembled to start the project. The teams generally consist of organic chemists, research metallurgists, and technicians. They have access to analytical scientists and technicians for surface and analytical chemistry. The projects are often augmented by help from university staff and consultants. This is particularly true where there is a need to develop fundamental understanding of the technology in addition to synthesis of chemicals. The project now proceeds along two lines. First, there is an emphasis on understanding the prior art. Extensive literature and patent searches are undertaken to provide research leads and to keep from "reinventing the wheel" and infringing on someone else's patent. The scientists and technologists are qualified to conduct computer-assisted library searches. This process usually uncovers 80-90% of the relevant information. The remainder is very much harder to get and requires the help of professional library search staff with scientific backgrounds. Along with literature searching, the team begins synthesis of new compounds. These are screened by use of techniques such as microflotation or filtration in a Buchner funnel. The scientists are looking for the direction of response as they modify structural features . Inevitably, a large number of candidates reach the next stage, a laboratory bench test. At this point it is possible to set up a research plan and use project management techniques to monitor progress. The bench tests are conducted in larger equipment, usually requiring 100-1000 grams of test substrate. Typical laboratory flotation tests are run in Denver or Wemco cells.
