The Bardon Trimount, Inc. stone quarry in Ashland, Massachusetts was the recent subject of a quarry closure review report. The quarry produces aggregate using standard drilling and blasting techniques. Stone is processed at an on-site plant. Noise monitoring data collected during the closure review indicate that the quarry generally operates within the quiet range. There is a decrease in noise while the quarry is not operating. Levels of dust associated with the quarry are low. Unpaved roadways are the greatest contributors of fugitive dust associated with the mining operation. The quarry cannot be seen from any homes within the town of Ashland, except during the winter months. The visual impact of the quarry on surrounding properties is minimal. Further quarry development is likely to reduce visibility of the quarry from some areas.

Zinc ores were first discovered in Tennessee in 1856 at Jefferson City where a deposit of oxidized ore became known as the Mossy Creek Mine. From that time until 1913 small scale attempts at prospecting and mining were made in various parts of the district. The actual systematic development of the zinc deposits dates from 1913 when the American Zinc Company started operations at Mascot. Six mines are in operation by three companies and a seventh mine is being developed by a fourth company. The total daily production from the field is 11,000 tons of crude ore, which grades from 3 to 6 per cent zinc. Most of the ore bodies are large and ramiform, resembling asyrmetrical networks in which the ore shoots form channel like branches with areas of non-comercia1 rock, called blank islands. Most of the orebodies are adapted to large scale mechanization.

The concepts of sea floor spreading and plate tectonics provide more logical explanations of some geologic processes than were possible a few years ago. I plan to premise my discussion of the regional features of Philippine porphyry copper deposits on this tectonic basis, recognizing that parts of the picture can be explained in other ways, but in the belief that this is the best explanation of the whole. The sequence of events which results in the formation of Porphyry deposits (Figure 1) can be summarized as the result of collision of crustal plates, subduction of the oceanic plate, emplacement of a serpentine ultrabasic diapir, formation of a dioritic magma at depths of 300 to 500 km, rise of the magma to a sub crustal or intra-crustal chamber, eruption of andesitic volcanoes, emplacement of diorite or differentiation of the magma into more acidic products, multiple intrusion of hypabyssal rocks and hydro-

Abstract The consumption of barytes in certain paints polyurethane foams, seamless, flooring, glass, brake linings, plastisol caskets for food containers and in fluids used for gastrointestinal X-ray examinations rely on tie unique properties of barium sulfate, There are no readily available mineral substitutes. Barytes are also the essential raw material for the manufacture of industrially important barium chemicals. High quality barite ore has become scarce throughout the world. Processing ore into quality end products is both capital and energy intensive. These factors have tended to limit availability and increase prices which have encouraged the use of alternates and restricted market growth.

With the aim of environment protection the program package HOMOGEN is used for realizing the planning and noxious components control in the coal produced. Using the program package PRIPREMA the division in levels and transformation (Hermite polynoms) in the N (0,1) distribution are made. By separated kriging 50 m x 50 m blocks are estimated on the levels and detailed distributions of the estimated component content are obtained. The face - longwall face is built in the blocks estimated in this way, and the direction of mining is determined. Using the stochastic simulation the distribution of the estimated production component (e.g. sulfur) on the face is obtained. Simulating the production of all faces in operation the distribution of the estimated daily mine production component is obtained. The estimated depot component is obtained in the same way. This procedure is used in the short-term planning of the estimated component movement for a given period in advance, and also in the daily production control in the case of changing conditions, e.g. the increased atmospheric pressure. The technology is successfully applied to the Velenje Lignite Mine Slovenia.

The purpose of this talk is to report the answers to the-'two following questions: I. What unique services does the mining industry expect of mining and mineral processing engineers? II. What suggestions does industry offer to educators to help revamp curricula to meet the needs of a changing industry? As the result of many questionnaires filled out in person by presidents, managers, superintendents, chief engineers, metallurgists, and other responsible individuals in operations and management of large and small metal and nonmetallic mining companies in the U. S., and to some extent abroad, we now have some, specific answers to the above questions. Although answers to questionnaires continue to arrive at this writing (February 10) the volume already received is sufficient to clearly justify certain conclusions and observations. A copy of the tally of the first 117 questionnaires received accompanies this report, and I am certain that a compilation of additional questionnaire data will merely reinforce, the trends in thinking that have been' established thus far. Water contact angles in the air/water/francolite, fuel oil/water/francolite and fuel oil/water/quartz systems were measured to describe the wetting characteristics of these minerals. It was found that white francolite is more hydrophilic than black and tan francolite both in the absence and presence of fatty acid addition. The contact angle measurement results do not correlate very well with the flotation response and it appears that kinetic aspects of the bubble attachment process play an important role in the francolite-fatty acid flotation system.

Boron minerals of economic importance are primarily colemanite, tincal, and ulexite. Turkey and the United States are the leading producers of boron minerals and compounds. Other production includes datolite in Russia and synthetic colemanite in Chile. This paper will discuss various types of chemical and physical treatments of boron ores to produce the marketable minerals and compounds that are consumed in commercial products.

Short-term mine planning to open pit requires defining diglines to orientate the excavation geometry. In deposits with multiple chemical variables, it is necessary to have more rigorous control over the feeding of the processing plant. This study analyzes the impact of incorporating multiple chemical variables, the risks generated by geological uncertainty, and the number and starting point locations of shovels in the sequential design of diglines. The objective is to maintain and preserve the low-grade variability, required tonnage, and continuity in sequentially selecting blocks. To achieve this, the probability distribution function of each chemical variable is used while attempting to maintain the ore grades as constant as possible. As it is difficult to maintain multiple elements with low variability simultaneously, the relevance of each chemical variable in the economic benefit is identified. Weights are assigned to signal the importance of each element based on its significance in the recovery process. Several diglines, consisting of sequential blocks, were generated on the same seed point to meet the weekly ore demand. Optimizing the stationarity of multiple chemical variables, accessing and reducing the geological uncertainty performed through geostatistical simulation of grades and transfers functions, considering the number and location of shovels, while meeting the operational restrictions of the selected blocks. The optimized digline with the multiple grades as stationary as possible is retained. The process is illustrated in a phosphate mine. The results show that the proposed method is viable and allows for a quick solution.

Nonspecific airway hyperresponsiveness is a central feature of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and has been associated with atopy in the presence of environmental exposures such as smoking. Coal miners may develop emphysema and lung function decrements related to their dust exposure. To investigate the roles of airway responsiveness and atopy in these effects, we evaluated the relationships among smoking, a history of hay fever or seasonal rhinitis, and airway responsiveness (AR) in a group of underground bituminous coal miners and nonmining controls. All subjects had a normal baseline percent predicted FEV1. Increased airway responsiveness was defined as a 15% or greater decrease in FEV1 following methacholine inhalation. 85 miners (45%) and 99 controls (46%) were current smokers, 59 miners (31%) and 55 controls (26%) were lifetime nonsmokers; former smokers were excluded from further analysis. Overall, 25% of 144 miners included in this analysis had increased AR, as opposed to 29% of 155 controls. Thirty-seven percent of both miners and controls had a history of seasonal rhinitis. Significantly fewer miners (15%) had a history of hay fever compared to controls (25%, p< 0.05). Figure 1 shows the prevalence of increased airway responsiveness in miners and controls in association with hay fever. In both smoking and non smoking miners the presence of a hay fever history was significantly (p < 0.05) associated with a higher prevalence of increased AR. Little effect was seen in smoking (p = 0.827) and nonsmoking (p = 0.940) controls. Figure 2 shows a similar higher prevalence of increased AR associated with symptoms of seasonal rhinitis in the mining group. This was significant (p < 0.01) only in the smoking miners. No effect was noted in the controls. These data suggest that the association of a history of hay fever or seasonal rhinitis symptoms with increased airway responsiveness may be more common in coal mining, compared to non-dusty occupations. Although the implication of these data are unclear, further study of miners with a history of hay fever or seasonal rhinitis is warranted. [On Pier D in the Port of Long Beach, California, the Port of Long Beach has built a new bulk cement distribution terminal. The facility is operated by Pacific Coast Cement Corporation, who designed the complex and leased it from the Port of Long Beach on a 40-year lease. At one bulk cement is unloaded from vessels carrying from 12,000 to 30,000 t. The unloading is performed with pig speed mechanical unloading equipment and delivered into a concrete silo complex with, a capacity of 50,000 t. From the silos, bulls cement is loaded into trucks for delivery. The facility was completed in September 1981.]

The Piney Branch CSO 049 Storage Tunnel (PBST) will be the last major project for the DC Clean Rivers Program. The project includes construction of a 2,200-foot-long, 18-foot-internal-diameter storage tunnel; two connections to combined sewer infrastructure; and two shafts. Major challenges include excavation underneath an existing live outfall that must remain in service; excavation of the tunnel through several areas of low rock cover and mixed-face conditions; and negotiations with a variety of federal, regional, and local stakeholders to address project impacts. This paper describes the overall project scope; geotechnical conditions along the alignment; design and construction challenges; and construction procurement.

The purpose of this paper is to present validation studies of the mine-fire simulator using data gathered from an actual mine fire which occurred in November 1991 at the Pattiki Mine. To develop the model of the ventilation system with the fire in this validation study, the following adjustments were made: (1) flow and gas distribution in the entire ventilation network, and (2) fire parameters matching the data recorded by the monitoring system. After close correlations between simulation and real data were achieved, additional analysis of the ventilation system with the mine fire was performed. Presented and discussed in this paper are the following stages of the fire at the Pattiki Mine: (1) early fire (before the fire was detected), (2) preparation for and fire fighting with water, (3) fire sealing, and (4) fire extinguishing. This study evaluates the suitability of the computer software package for modeling underground fires. The paper also discusses the importance of the on-line monitoring system for the validation process.

System simulation is an increasingly popular technique for analyzing and improving existing as well as newly designed underground mining operations. An engineering firm that specializes in simulation helped a major metals producer build a long-range planning model of an existing underground mine. Subsequently the team adapted this model to assess technology alternatives in the design of a new mine. The two models differ in the level of detail used for modeling the development process. This paper discusses the differences in approach between the models along with the experiences gained and challenges faced during the construction and use of the models.

Potassium, is one of the three basic plant nutrients along with nitrogen and phosphorus. There is no substitute for potassium compounds in agriculture; they are essential to maintain and expand food production. Potash is found throughout the world in both soluble and insoluble forms. It is only the soluble forms that are economically attractive to process, primarily chlorides and sulfates, with potassium chloride by far the most important potash salt. Sylvinite ore, a mechanical mixture of sylvite (KCl) and halite (NaCl), is a natural mineral of potassium. This ore is found in commercial quantities in the Permian sin region near Carlsbad, New Mexico. Vast tonnages of high-grade de, low-clay-content ores have been mined and concentrated during the past 40 years; however, these deposits are rapidly being depleted leaving high-clay, low-grade ore reserves of over 135 million tons. These ores, containing 13 to 22 percent K20 and 3 to 8 percent clay slimes; cannot be effectively processed by current commercial flotation methods. The present concentration processes for potash minerals in Carlsbad relate mainly to ores containing 1 percent or less of clay-slimes with a K20 content of 20 to 25 percent to yield products to meet the requirements of the agriculture market, namely, 95 percent KC1 equivalent to 60 percent K20. Discoveries of potash ore in Saskatchewan, Canada, have shifted the emphasis on expansion outside the United States. Presently, the American companies are looking to Canada for future growth, expenditures, and expansion. Four of the seven companies operating near Carlsbad are produces of Canadian potash despite the large investment sons required for shaft sinking and milling installations.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a image analysis methodology to correlate the energy consumed during the grinding of an ore to the mineral liberation achieved. Energy consumption values are obtained using a laboratory-scale ball mill equipped with a torque sensor, and an automated image analyzer is used to determine the liberation present in ground products. By combining liberation information with energy consumption data an appraisal can be made of the energy required to liberate the mineral(s) of interest. Results of tests performed on a complex sulfide material determined the effects of grind duration on the liberation achieved and the energy efficiency.

One of the chief sources of the world&apos;s supply of asbestos lies in a belt of ultrabasic rocks which runs northeastward through an area called the Eastern Townships, south of the St. Lawrence River in the Province of Québec. The productive portion of this belt extends from the town of Asbestos in the south, for a distance of some 9,5 km to beyond the village of East-Broughton. The first discovery of asbestos in this region was made in 1874. Only crude fibre was produced until 1888 when the first mill was erected near the town of Black Lake. Since the inception of the industry, almost 100 years ago, no less than 100 different compa¬nies have been formed and 46 different mines have been operated. There are presently 5 active companies in the area providing direct employment for 4100 workers, down from 6000 during the seventies.

Enclosed cab filtration systems are typically used on mobile mining equipment to reduce miners? exposure to airborne dusts and diesel particulates generated during mining operations. Various filter configurations can be used within the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems of cabs to remove the airborne contaminants. The air cleaning performance of cab filtration systems is highly dependent on the efficiency of the air filters, the number of filters used, and their placement within the HVAC system. This paper shows how to mathematically model cab filtration systems and illustrates a methodology for developing other cab filtration system design models. Node diagrams of several filtration system circuits are illustrated with their mathematical models at steady state airflow and concentration conditions. Laboratory and field data are presented to demonstrate the validity and utility of modeling enclosed cab air cleaning performance. The paper concludes that incorporating multiple filters throughout the HVAC system improves the air cleaning performance and robustness of the cab filtration system design.

INTRODUCTION Denmark is a small country with a population of about 5.5 million in the north of Europe. A substantial part of Denmark consists of islands, and the Danes have been familiar with ferry links between their islands for ages. However, their wish for fixed links has resulted in the con¬struction of bridges between most of Denmark&apos;s islands in this century. (Fig. 1) A fixed link across the Store Belt or Great Belt, Denmark&apos;s most important waterway bet¬ween the island of Fyn and main island of Sjaelland, on which the capital of Copenhagen is situated, has remained to be constructed hitherto. In 1987, the Danish government decided that the Great Belt should be crossed by a fixed link, incorporating a two-track railway line and four-lane motorway. The Storebaelt Forbindelsen AS, a joint stock company in the sole ownership of the Dan¬ish state, has been established for the purpose of planning, constructing and operating the Great Belt Link. The company will refinance the construction project by charging toll to the motorway users and fees to the state railway. Here it should be mentioned that Denmark and Sweden are about to jointly realize the fixed rail and road link across the Øresund or The Sound between Denmark and Sweden on the basis of the realization model of the Great Belt link. At present, the project is at the com¬petitive tendering or contract awarding stage. In the near future, also the third fixed link of comparable extent, that is the crossing of the Fehmarn Belt between Denmark and Germany, will go into the decisive projecting stage prob¬ably in conformity with the aforementioned pattern. Going back to the Great Belt, it should be noted that this fixed link involves three exten¬sive sections and has been under construction since December 1988.

The Cripple Creek diatreme-intrusive complex is known primarily for its vein telluride-gold ores and, for major veins, their great vertical range (>990m). Less well-documented are the ores dispersed into the wallrocks adjacent to veins, the ores associated with hydrothermal and tectonic breccias, or mineralized zones within fluvial, lacustrine, and volcaniclastic rocks deposited within the diatreme complex. The ore-gangue minerals Here precipitated from oxidized, alkaline fluids that yielded an abundance of carbonate, sulfate, and oxide minerals along with minor base metal sulfide and precious metal telluride-s. Wallrock alteration is quite limited adjacent to veins and somewhat more extensive within hydrothermal and tectonic breccias.
