"In 2004 works started for the now completed seven-level automated car park accommodating 480 parking spaces inside the pre-existent “Morelli cave”, located in a strategic area in Naples. Since 470 BC Greeks initiated the growth of the fascinating world of the underground Naples, of which this cave belongs. It seems that once here the god Mithras was worshiped. It’s also became a quarry for tuff extraction and in 1600s it became an aqueduct serving the area. In 1853 the Bourbon Tunnel, a project commissioned by King Ferdinand II of Bourbon to allow easy escape from the Royal Palace in case of riots, was connected to this network of tunnels. The cavern became an air raid shelter during the Second World War, then a deposit of cars and motorcycles in the '50s and' 60s, a disposal area and it has been abandoned in the last 40 years before it’s new utilization. INTRODUCTION Over time, the overcrowding and congestion of major cities’ historic centres has led to seeking spaces underground that can accommodate activities and car parks, as in the case of the Morelli cavity, site of the future car park by that name. Before describing its characteristics, design solutions, and executive problems, it is necessary to introduce the site historically into the broader landscape of the cavities present below ground in the municipality of Naples. The province of Naples, which includes the area of the Municipality of Naples, has a large number of cavities. The existence of “Naples underground” is connected with the morphological and geological conformation of its territory, consisting of tuff stone which has entirely special features of lightness, brittleness, and stability. The first transformations in the territory’s morphology, taking place thanks to the Greeks starting from 470 BC, initiated the growth of the fascinating world of Naples underground. These transformations were dictated by water provision requirements, which led to the creation of underground cisterns to collect rainwater, and by the need to recover construction material to erect the buildings of Neapolis. In subsequent centuries, the city’s expansion led to the construction of a proper aqueduct, which allowed drinking water to be collected and distributed thanks to a series of cisterns linked to a dense network of tunnels. During Roman rule, the existing aqueduct was expanded and perfected, but with the rise of the Angevins in 1266, the city saw great urban expansion, which obviously corresponded with increased extraction of tuff from the subsoil to construct new buildings. This confirmed a particular feature of Naples: that of having been generated from its own innards, with buildings rising directly above the quarry that provided their building material."

Extensive exploration is being undertaken throughout the world in search for heavy minerals, particularly rutile and other titanium minerals. The federal government is sponsoring research involving rutile ores and recovery of stockpile-grade concentrates from domestic sources. Producers are being forced to turn to deposits with a heavy mineral content as low as 0.50% (essentially rutile and zircon). The North Carolina State University Minerals Research Laboratory investigated the possibilities of recovering heavy minerals from the amine tailings of the Texasgulf Inc.'s phosphate plant at Aurora, North Carolina. One laboratory beneficiation procedure using gravity, electrostatic and magnetic processes, resulted in the recovery of 78.7% of the heavy minerals in the amine tailings. Based on this percentage recovery and the present rate of phosphate mining, approximately 13,000 tons per year of heavy minerals (principally ilmenite and zircon) with a potential value of approximately $1,045,000 (1977) could be recovered. The economic potential for recovery of these heavy minerals appears to be favorable. A flotation procedure for up-grading the heavy minerals content in the amine tailings has been developed at the Laboratory, which could allow for concentration of heavy minerals and storing them in tailings area other than main tailings for future processing.

In 2017, the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) initiated the design of the Sister Grove Regional Water Resource Recovery Facility (SGRWRRF) to provide additional treatment capacity for future population growth within the Lavon Lake watershed. To provide a discharge location for SGRWRRF approximately 4.5 miles of 2.4- meter (96-inch) internal diameter pipeline will be constructed, including 2.3-kilometer (7,800) feet and 487-meter (1,600 foot) long tunnel segments. This paper will discuss the anticipated geology of the two tunnel segments, selection of the tunnel alignment, the anticipated initial tunnel support requirements and other aspects of the project design

Application of flotation for the removal of hydrophobic compounds from soils was studied. Bench scale flotation tests were conducted on artificially contaminated soil, using both conventional mechanically agitated machine and flotation column. Flotation parameters tested include surfactant collector type, conditioning time, flotation time, surfactant dosage, pulp pH, solid/liquid ratio in conditioning and pulp temperature. It is found that with conventional flotation 74% removal of the contaminant was achieved from soil particles in the range of 75-830 µm; with column flotation up to 80% of oil could be removed from the 250-830 µm soil fraction, and 65% from the 75-830 µm fraction. Flotation was found to have considerable potential for cleaning up contaminated soils.

The sulfur dioxide emitted in low concentrations in flue gases from the combustion of sulfur-containing coals and fuel oils is a significant factor in contamination of the atmosphere with sulfur dioxide. A review of methods for treating gases containing high concentrations of sulfur dioxide shows that they are seldom satisfactory for purifying flue gases. Processes developed specifically for treating flue gases using liquid absorbents are costly and may cause localized pollution, because the cooled flue gases can settle in the vicinity of the stack. Bench-scale research is being conducted to investigate the use of dry absorbents for sulfur dioxide removal at temperature levels of about 250°- 300° F. and 600°-650° F. Alkalized alumina has been found effective for treating simulated flue gas and Is regenerable by hydrogen, carbon monoxide, or producer gas. Other metallic oxides have been tested as absorbents also. Chemically impregnated activated carbons removed sulfur dioxide from the gas at 265° F. Vanadium pentoxide is effective as a catalyst for oxidizing of sulfur dioxide in the simulated flue gas at temperatures lower than have been used commercially for gases with higher concentrations of sulfur dioxide. Conversions of sulfur dioxide to trioxide wore studied as a function of temp- erature over a range of about 570° to 750° F.

The synthetic rock mass (SRM) approach and discrete fracture network (DFN) model, generated from the field surveys, are novel methodologies to study fracture rock mass behavior. In this paper, SRM and DFN methodologies were used to understand the influence of natural fractures on the mechanical response and failure mechanisms of stone mine pillars. First, a multi-stage up-scaling procedure with the homogenization process is established. Later, a stochastic sampling process on the SRM model to have further insight on the stone mine pillar mechanics is performed. Two-dimensional Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC) is utilized to represent intact rock with the Voronoi-Trigon discretized blocks and to capture fractured rock mass behavior. The laboratory-size limestone mine rock specimens are systematically up-scaled to the average width of the field-size stone mine pillars. Then, the DFN model, generated from field data, is sampled to construct the SRM of the field-size pillars. By doing so, the effect of discrete discontinuities on pillar stability is studied by assessing the pillar strengths and failure mechanisms in various width-to-height ratios.

Introduction The East-West Gateway Coordinating Council is an organization of local governments formed in 1965 to identify regional problems and to formulate policies, plans and programs to resolve them. The major goal of the Gateway Council is to improve the quality of life for the citizens of the St. Louis Region. While East-West Gateway Coordinating Council is the organization I represent and it only deals with the St. Louis Metropolitan Area, you will find one or more similar organizations in each of our nation's urbanized areas. As a result, for illustrative purposes, I will use my organization to portray what is happening nationwide. For example, in order to eliminate duplication, the Council reviews local applications for approximately 100 federally funded programs in such areas as highways, mass transit, parks, water treatment, and sewers before they can be sent to the appropriate funding agency. The Council's varied functions place it in a unique position of receiving more and more responsibility for developing strategies of implementation of various environmental regulations. This is due to the fact that environmental control is a relatively new field and we, as a country, are relatively inexperienced. The resulting regulations and guidelines will depend, to a great extent, on what the general public is willing to accept in terms of controls and what price they are willing to pay in terms of taxes and increased costs. TBM utilization rate is a component of machine performance prediction and critical for developing a reliable estimate of the construction completion time and cost of the tunnel. Estimation of the utilization rate involves identifying and quantifying the time dedicated to each activity in a tunneling jobsite. Ring building is a common activity in TBM tunneling and takes a large amount of tunnel excavation time when using shielded TBMs. This paper concentrates on the effect of tunnel diameter on the duration of downtimes related to ring building and examines the impact of machine diameter on downtimes. For this purpose, the dependency of segment installation time to segment configuration, and also the diameter of the tunnel was investigated. Furthermore, the ring building time for four tunnels with different sizes of diameters and a variety of ring arrangement were analyzed and the relationship between TBM diameter and segment installation time and consequently TBM utilization was evaluated.

Anthracite mine refuse, or culm dump material as it is sometimes called, is the waste material resulting from the sizing and cleaning of run-of-mine deep and strip-mined anthracite coal. It may also contain mine rock, carbonaceous shale, pyrite, and other debris from mining operations. This material is generally stored in piles or banks, some of which are over 100 years old. Many of the older banks contain a considerable amount of good coal, particularly in the finer size ranges, since these sizes did not have any particular economic value in the early days of anthracite mining. Today, the refuse material from a cleaning operation must be piled in an orderly fashion and in such a way as to minimize the tendency to ignite. There are well over 400 of these banks in the anthracite region containing over 1100 million tons of refuse located in the north-eastern part of Pennsylvania. Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) has became an attractive alternative technology to be a new process to recover metal, of which can be substitute the existing Leaching/Solvent extraction processes. Solvent extraction of metallic ions is a technically important and also well-established process that is used in the chemical and hydrometallurgical industries.1 Solvent extraction techniques use the chelation of metallic ions dissolved in liquid solution with organic ligands. Conventional solvent-extraction technique needs large amount of organic solvents and often creates environmental problems.2 More environment-friendly technology is needed nowadays, and there have been increasing attentions to extract metal ions by SFE. CO2 becomes one of the most notable alternative organic solvents due to its nonflammable, nontoxic, nonpolluting, and relatively inexpensive properties with its moderate critical point (73.8 bar, 31.06 °C). Many works have been reported in metal extraction under the supercritical CO2 (scCO2) solvent.3-5 In this study, to recover cobalt from wastes especially from spent lithium ion battery scrap, we selected two ligands ? Cyanex 272 and DEA (diethylamine) for the metal extraction in scCO2. Cyanex 272 is a commercially available extractant along with its series, Cyanex 301 and Cyanex 302. Smart and coauthors measured the metal extracting abilities of these three extractants, and found that Cyanex 301 and Cyanex 302 extracted metal ions much better than Cyanex 272 in the scCO2 solvent.10 The pH of water contacted with high pressure CO2 (70-200 bar, 25-70 oC) is about 2.8-2.95 based on the calculation and the measurement.6-7 Cyanex 272 is known to be less effective as a metal extractant in this low pH environment compared with other Cyanex series. However, when DEA is added to metal extraction reaction with Cyanex-272, DEA works as a strong base to Cyanex 272 converting Cyanex 272 to a deprotonated form (Figure 1), which results in an easy formation of metal complex and the enhanced extraction rate of metal ion.8 Therefore, the purpose of this paper is the metal extraction from spent lithium ion battery waste using scCO2 with Cyanex 272 and DEA.

The west central upper Peninsula of Michigan contains a large resource of graphitic slate. The slate has potential industrial use as a substitute for shale currently used in the production of portland cement. Some of the unweathered slate, however, has a high concentration of pyritic sulfur which can create emission problems when processed in a kiln. A low cost method to reduce the sulfur content of the slate through the optimization of pyrite oxidation in a bio-heap leaching operation was investigated.

"Newmont Mining Corporation operates the Yanacocha mine in Perú and the gold milling section of the property includes a Sulfidization-Acidification-Recycle-Thickening (SART) plant to remove copper from pregnant leach solution. Since its commissioning in 2008, the plant has been intermittently operated as needed to remove copper upstream of a carbon adsorption circuit. However, starting in 2015 Newmont expects the plant to operate on a more continuous basis in response to higher copper ores that will be processed in the gold mill. In anticipation of this, Newmont conducted a campaign in May 2014 with stockpiled high-copper ore to evaluate performance of the SART plant with elevated levels of copper in feed solution. Results from the campaign demonstrated the SART plant is capable of efficiently treating high-copper leach solution. During the campaign, leach solution copper levels ranged from about 100 to 700 mg/L, and copper removals ranging from about 56% to +99% were achieved. The median copper removal efficiency observed during the campaign was about 94%. The primary plant modification determined necessary following the campaign was the need to improve consistency with sulfide dosing. INTRODUCTION Copper removal from cyanide leach solution can be affected through the addition of sulfide at acidic pH to precipitate copper sulfide as a solid. There has been renewed interest in the process in the past several years due to the increasingly common issue of high copper levels in cyanide leach solutions. The term Sulfidization- Acidification-Recycle-Thickening (SART) is used as an acronym for the process according to the primary unit operations utilized. At a pH of approximately 4.0 to 5.0, the addition of soluble sulfide to a copper-bearing leach solution will result in the precipitation of copper sulfide (Cu2S) solid. The overall acidification and sulfidization reaction is (assuming the use of sulfuric acid for pH adjustment): 2Cu(CN)3-2 + 3H2SO4 + S-2 ? Cu2S(s) + 6HCN(aq) + 3SO4-2 The above reaction is written relative to the copper-cyanide complex 2Cu(CN)3-2, though analogous reactions also take place with the other common copper-cyanide complexes Cu(CN)2- and Cu(CN)4-3. Sulfide in the above reaction (S-2) is normally supplied as sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) purchased in solid or concentrated liquid form. Two characteristics of this reaction that are beneficial to a leaching operation are: 1. Copper is removed from solution as Cu2S (synthetic chalcocite) solid, which can then be sold to a smelter for its copper value. 2. Cyanide that is complexed with copper in the leach solution is released as free cyanide, thereby regenerating cyanide that can be recycled to the leaching operation for continued use."

The Andritz Ruthner Inc. hyperbaric filter was evaluated at a pilot scale for dewatering fine coal cleaned by froth flotation. The pilot scale dewatering testing was conducted at a solid feed rate ranging from 100 lbs to 200 lbs/hr-ft2. Effect of hyperbaric operating parameters and addition of various surfactants and flocculants were evaluated on dewatering of fine coal. The tests data indicated that for the minus 100 mesh and minus 28 mesh clean coal product, the Andritz hyperbaric unit provided filter cake containing 23 percent and 14 percent moisture, respectively.

Mining is one of the oldest human activities. It goes back at least to the Bronze Age and possibly even the Stone Age. The Romans mined copper in Spain and tin in England some two thousand years ago. The writings of Agricola in the 16th century show that mining was important in the Middle Ages. Today we mine more mineral commodities in greater tonnages than ever before. This long and fascinating history closely tied with the economic development of the human race is one of the charms of the mining industry. It also, unfortunately, gives rise to some widespread misconceptions.

Texasgulf Inc. currently operates an open pit phosphate mine in the central coastal plain of North Carolina. The area of phosphate deposition lies within the Aurora Phosphate district which consists of an embayment which is in the center of the Neogene phosphate deposition. A variety of solid and liquid fertilizer products are produced at the Texasgulf complex. One of these products is known as North Carolina Natural Phosphate (NCNP). New potential for use of unacidulated natural phosphate, now exists in regions with acid soils due to the discovery of the findings from recent research, cost advantages, and moves to reduce chemical inputs.

The acid mine drainage problem in Pennsylvania is of continuing and growing interest to the coal mining industry, the state government and the citizenry at large. Approximately one-third of the total volume of mine drainage presently polluting the streams of the Commonwealth originates from active coal operations and two-thirds come from ?abandoned mine discharges.? For this reason the Pennsylvania Department of Mines and Mineral Industries has mounted a significant research and action program seeking solutions to this two-fold problem. The Coal Research Board of the Department has sponsored a wide variety of research projects in an effort to study the treatment of acidic and highly ferruginous mine waters. A review of the published literature on the treatment of mine waters indicated that many laboratory and theoretical studies had been undertaken on various aspects of the coal mine drainage problem, but little applied, developmental, or engineering study had been undertaken. In January of 1964 the Board commenced a rigorous program using state and industry funds in an effort to find a ?least cost? solution or solutions to this vexing problem.

Coal is America's most abundant energy resource. Therefore, it IS logical to assume that coal must be produced in much greater quantifies in order to make the United States self-sufficient, as far as energy is concerned by 1985. However, there are a number of obstacles which have to be overcome in order to achieve such a great task. According to one of the most outspoken American Mining men, there are three major obstacles. Those are: (1 ) Mining technology (2) Public image of the coal mining industry (3) Governmental policy toward the mining industry The following will be dealing with Shortwall Mining, which is a very specific part of mining technology and which might influence the image of the coal mining industry as well as the governmental guidelines, at least to make it easier to live with those guidelines. During recent years the operation of coal mines has been more expensive than ever. Since 1970, the cost of producing coal increased by 30% and the productivity dropped by just about the same amount. Those are alarming signs.

The Port Radium mine of Eldorado Mining and Refining Limited, located on Great Bear Lake only a few miles from the Arctic Circle in north-western Canada, is the oldest uranium producer in Canada, The first concentrates were produced in 1933 and except for a period between 1940 and 1942 the mill has operated continuously. Although it is located in a remote area, and compared to more recent mines in other areas is a small tonnage operation, nonetheless the relatively high grade of the Port Radium ore has permitted operation to date on an economical basis. The mill process at Port Radium includes the original gravity concentration mill, and since 1952 an acid leaching plant which treats tailings from the gravity mill and tailings recovered by dredging of residues from underwater dumps in Great Bear Lake. The pregnant solution from the leach plant has to date been processed through aluminum reduction to yield an intermediate grade uranous phosphate-arsenate precipitate, Because of the rising costs of the aluminum reduction process, and its sensitivity to ore composition, Eldorado became interested in possible application to Port Radium of the solvent extraction processes of which we were obtaining increasing information in the latter part of 1954 and during 1955.

The dissolution behavior of gold and silver from Au/Ag alloys in aerated cyanide solutions has been investigated using rotating disc electrodes. The variables studied included concentration of cyanide, oxygen partial pressure and rotating speed of the disc. The dissolution potential and the rate of dissolution were obtained in view of the anodic and cathodic current-potential relationships. The results were discussed in terms of a mixed potential theory. The results showed that the dissolution rate of gold and silver from the alloys was partially controlled by chemical reaction, but largely by transport of either oxygen or cyanide, depending on their relative concentration under the experimental conditions employed in this study.

Research is probably the least understood and the most underrated or overrated, depending on the circumstances, function of the corporate enterprise. Some companies become engaged in research because they consider it to be vital to their very existence, others in order to develop new business, and some with no clearer objective than to keep up with the competition. Whole new industries have resulted from research activities, such as the Xerox copier, the transistor, the computer, and have affected considerably our way of life. Companies have prospered or perished by pursuing the successes or failures of their research organizations. However. despite the tremendous effect that research has had on our modern civilization and the billions which are spent on it annually, we have not as yet been able to develop many hard and fast rules as to how to conduct it effectively and to a successful end.1 This section discusses the role of research in the United States and in the mineral industry and describes a few of the criteria and guidelines which have been developed to assist in increasing the probability for success in industrial research. Broadly speaking, the purpose of industrial research is to make a significant contribution to the long-term viability and the profitability of the sponsoring company. The sum total of technological developments has been a principal factor in establishing the United States as a world leader and the controlling element in the nation's balance of trade with foreign powers. The international aspect of most mineral commodities is a significant factor in the business decision-making of most domestic mining companies and should be an important factor in the operation of research and development (R & D) programs in these companies. The National Science Board has reported that in recent yean other nations have been gaining on the United States over practically the entire range of science. 2,3 On the positive side, the NSB reported a strong position for the US in the results derived from its investment in R & D. If the United States is to maintain a favorable trade balance, it must create new know-how through technological innovation in order to create new industrial products, processes, and services for which there is a global demand. As expressed by Chauncey Starr, president of the Electric Power Research Institute, "Unlike resources found in nature, technology is a man-made resource whose abundance can be continuously increased, and whose importance in determining the world's future is also increasing."' In recent years, the greatly in- creased pressures for environmental quality and energy conservation have enhanced further the role of technical innovation in insuring the future survival of the domestic industry. Technology is the challenge of American industry, and it is a challenge which the mineral industry must also accept, for processed minerals are the very raw materials and energy on which all of industry is based, it is technology which makes a mineral deposit into an ore reserve. The Natural of Industrial R D Research is usually thought of as being either basic or applied. Basic or fundamental research is the quest for knowledge and need not have any practical objective. Applied research is the search for a solution to a particular problem and therefore has a specific objective beyond the acquisition of new knowledge. Development is the next stage to the applied research experimentation and it generally consists of larger-scale tests to establish the technical and economic feasibility of the new process or product and to provide design information for its industrial implementation. The terms research and development are usually interconnected for the good reason that in many cases it is difficult to define where one ends and the other begins. For instance, in many cases, thermodynamic, kinetic, corrosion, and other research studies, which are needed to provide design data for an industrial plant, may prod in parallel with the pilot plant activities preparatory for this plant in order to conserve time. Often the final stages of a development project may involve the trial production of a new product for markeing tests or the trial operation of a new process on a "semi-industrial" scale pilot plant.
