Ever since electricity was introduced, electrical injuries and electrocutions have continued to occur regularly in coal mines. An analysis of the two hundred cases of electrocutions which occurred during 1956 to 1970 indicated that over 50 percent of the incidents were caused by the ineffectiveness or lack of electrical grounding. Research shows that various types of arbitrarily designed ground beds are in use and that the ground resistance and current are often very high and subject to wide seasonal variations. The results of a recent research are discussed in this paper.

"A three dimensional nonlinear finite element model was constructed to simulate and analyze the behavior of large diameter segmentally lined shafts when subjected to seismic waves. To reduce computation time, a less complex shell model was also constructed. Transient excitation was applied to the supported nodes of both models, at the base of the shaft, with a time-function representing the 1994 Northridge earthquake. The models are developed at the end of an original phased construction-stage analysis of the shaft. Displacements, forces and moments are monitored and compared during the analyses steps. During the initial 15 seconds of the earthquake, the top and bottom of the shaft show similar displacements. The maximum horizontal displacement within the shaft is approximately 3.5 inches in the solid model and the shell model results conform to this by a factor of 50%. Keywords: Segmentally Lined Shaft, Soil Structure Interaction, Seismic Analysis, Finite Element Modeling, Ground Modification INTRODUCTION TO SEGMENTALLY LINED SHAFTS Large diameter segmentally lined shafts (SLS) are underground systems, constructed sequentially using precast concrete segments to form a ring which provides both temporary earth support during excavation and permanent structural support. The segments are connected via alignment pins, bolts, packer material and other structural components that ensure the continuity of the SLS. In this analysis, the construction process uses a top-down sequence wherein each soil layer is excavated, damp-proofing is installed and concrete segments are assembled to form each ring. This process is repeated until design depths are achieved completing the shaft. It is known that cylindrical structures sustain lateral (earth) pressure mainly through the mechanism of hoop-stress. As Timoshenko’s ring theory goes, a cylinder shell structure is prone to buckling under external pressure [1]. In typical designs of small diameter shafts and tunnel linings with small diameter to wall thickness ratios, nonlinear buckling analysis (i.e., nonlinear geometric analysis) is not considered, since the buckling capacities for those structures are much higher than typical pressures encountered at their design depths. However, in shafts with large diameter to wall thickness ratios, buckling could become a critical issue. In any given mode, as buckling occurs in a ring, some sections of the structure move inward while alternating sections protrude. Although the presence of the surrounding soil could mitigate the buckling by resisting the movement (Soil structure interaction) seismic loads can cause ground movements and lateral pressures, exceeding the capacity of the structure. It is therefore essential to design the load bearing capacities of the shaft to minimize the possibility of any catastrophic failure due to earthquakes. This study explores the structural response of the SLS when subjected to seismic loads."

The Hama Mining Company owns and operates The Groveland Mine near Iron Mountain, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The orebody is part of the Menominee Range of the Lake Superior District. The ore (generally known as Jasper taconite) contains an average of 35% iron ranging from 28% to 39% with an overall split of 60% magnetite and 40% hematite. The variations encountered throughout the orebody require a certain amount of blending to reduce feed changes to the mill. One of the variables which affects the crushers, as well as the mill, is the range of hardness which has a low of 7.9 and a high of 24.6 as measured by the Bond Twin pendulum impact and crushing technique. Reference is made to hardness only to point out its effect on crushing and wear rate variations. Over a period of time, these variables do, of course, average out. Mining of the low grade ore started in 1959 and has operated continuously to date. Preparation of the feed for conventional rod and ball mill grinding is accomplished by three stages of crushing. Reduction of crude ore is first passed through a 54 inch gyratory crusher; then through a secondary crusher; followed by two or three tertiary crushers in closed circuit with screens as production quotas require (Figure 1). Current demand to the crushers is about 5,200,000 tons of crude ore per year.

The following report details the successful construction of Contract 2A of the Three Rivers Water Quality Management Program, Intrenchment Creek Combined Sewer Overflow Conveyance System, in DeKalb County for the City of Atlanta, Georgia. The contract required construction of approximately 2878 m (9443 ft) of tunnel bored to an initial diameter of 7.95 m (26 ft 1 in), with provisions to concrete line those portions designated by the engineer to a finished internal diameter of 6.91 m (22 ft 8 in). Flanking the tunnel are two shafts. The upstream shaft was excavated to a nominal diameter of 4.87 m (16 ft) to accommodate a finished internal diameter of 3.66 m (12 ft). This shaft required a transition boot fully concrete lined to final dimensions of 6.91 m (22 ft 8 in) wide, 13.72 m (45 ft) long, and varying in height from 6.91 m (22 ft 8 in) to 12.80 m (42 ft). Associated work necessary to complete the contractual obligations included installation of 22.86 m (75 ft) of cut-and-cover box culvert, 484 m (1589 ft) of open-cut sewer installation in sizes ranging from 0.30 m (12 in) to 1.68 m (5 ft 6 in), one river crossing, 137.46 m (451 ft) of monolithic concrete trapezoidal channel, and installation of 19125 cu m (25000 cu yd) of select fill material compacted and graded to finished contours. The downstream shaft was excavated to a minimum diameter of 12.04 m (39 ft 6 in) and concrete lined to a finished internal diameter of 10.67 m (35 ft). Requirements here included installation of a complete pumping station with all mechanical, electrical, and structural elements necessary for dewatering the tunnel through the controlled use of four 250 hp submersible pumps discharging into the facilities of the Intrenchment Creek Water Pollution Plant. INTRODUCTION Good ventilation bulkheads (stoppings) can be obtained only by conscientiously adhering to four basic principles: carefully selecting the site for the bulkhead, adequately preparing the site, properly constructing and sealing the bulkhead, and checking the results with a smoke tube before leaving the area. If all these guidelines are followed during each ventilation project, a poor job will result only from the use of improper materials and cannot be blamed on carelessness or oversight. SITE SELECTION A perfectly constructed bulkhead in the wrong location can be completely worthless. Conceivably, a bulk-head in the wrong location could cause dangerous ventilation conditions that are difficult to identify and isolate. If the suggestions herein are followed, a considerable amount of work, time, and material may be saved. Perhaps the single most important step is always to select the exact site for a bulkhead before starting construction. Although the latitude in selecting a site may be limited by instructions or operating conditions, it is common to find poor bulkheads built within a few meters (feet) of a site that would have been far superior but was overlooked during the planning process. The ideal site for a bulkhead should have as many of the following features and conditions as possible: 1) To provide a solid bulkhead, the selected site should be in firm and unbroken ground. 2) To minimize the amount of work and material required and to minimize the danger of later damage to the bulkhead, the site should have as small a cross section as possible. 3) The bulkhead site should not be encumbered by interferences such as pipes, wires, ditches, wire roof supports, trash, muck piles, etc. 4) The walls and timbers of the site should be free from oil, grease, or tar that would inhibit adhesion of the sealant used on the bulkhead. 5) Unless special precautions are taken, the site should not have water seepage, standing water on the floor, or water-carrying ditches. 6) To expedite construction of the bulkhead, the site should have reasonable access to transportation, supplies, communication facilities, and compressed-air lines. 7) The site should have a reasonably level floor, allowing direction of the bulkhead door swing to be reversed at a later time if so desired. In a steeply sloping location, it may be possible to open the door in one direction only. SITE PREPARATION Once a suitable site has been selected for the bulk¬head, it must be prepared properly. All site preparation work should be completed before starting any construction work on the stopping itself. Unfavorable site conditions can be identified during the course of thepreliminary site preparation, saving time, effort, and materials that otherwise might be wasted. The follow¬ing preparation steps help assure the construction of a good stopping: 1) If wire mesh has been used at the site, a strip 457 mm (18 in.) wide should be cut and removed from the walls and roof at the selected location. 2) The exposed strip of rock should be barred down thoroughly to provide a smooth surface. 3) All obstructing materials should be removed, including old timbers, pipes, rockbolts, wires, etc. If a conduit must cross the bulkhead area, it should be located or relocated away from the floor, walls, and roof to allow a 6.28-rad (360°) seal around the juncture between the conduit and the bulkhead structure. 4) All loose muck should be cleaned from the site and a trench about 152 mm (6 in.) deep should be dug from wall to wall in the floor. The trench must be wide enough to accommodate the entire bulkhead, including the posts. 5) The rock surfaces of the walls and roof should be cleaned with a wire brush to remove as much loose surface material as possible. Thorough cleaning promotes adhesion of the bulkhead sealant to the surfaces of the walls and roof, thus promoting an airtight seal. 6) It is quite difficult to seal landing mats that cross a bulkhead. If such a crossing cannot be avoided, the bulkhead should be placed between the end and the first hole in the steel so at least one side of the bulk-head can be sealed easily and completely. That may have to be done prior to actual construction if the end is located on the opposite face from the seal coating of the bulkhead. BULKHEAD CONSTRUCTION The three principal considerations in bulkhead con¬struction are the type of bulkhead, materials to be used, and construction method to be employed. For many projects, the bulkheads are specified by the requesting agency, with no latitude for independent choice of the type, materials, or construction method. In such cases, any deviations from the specifications, for any reason, must be approved in advance by the proper department or by the project senior ventilation engineer. Types and Materials When a choice of type, materials, or method is allowed, consideration should be given to factors such as cost, required useful life, proximity to blasting concus¬sions, availability of materials, direction of permissible air leakage, and degree of airtightness required. Other factors to be considered include the amount of time available, accessibility of transportation, potential for interference with operations or production, ambient water conditions, availability of connections to com¬pressed-air lines, etc. Despite the multitude of factors to be considered, most stoppings can be analyzed easily and the proper choices can be made without much difficulty. "THE CHALLENGE The 14km long, Arlbergtunnel, closed for public traffic during summer 2015, receiving a comprehensive and substantial renovation from 2015 to 2017. The main works discussed here, carried out during 2015, comprise 37 drill and blast SEM/NATM emergency escape tunnels from road level to the ventilation duct plenum have to be constructed as well as eight additional lay-by niches and three transformer tunnels. This presentation comprises the construction ventilation design, designed according to national regulations, suitable for 150 employees working 24/7 simultaneously at more than 40 single working sites lined up along the tunnel. The ventilation-system chosen was utilising two existing shafts for intake/discharge and a cross passage to surface, to handle a total fan power of 1.600kW. DESCRIPTION OF RENOVATION WORKS Linking Tyrol and Vorarlberg, two Federal States of Austria, the Arlbergtunnel is a single tube two-way road tunnel with vent duct plenum, constructed in the mid-1970s. According to latest EU legislation, additional escape exits have become obligatory. The existing seven cross passage links to the adjacent Arlberg Railway Tunnel, with average spacing of about 1.500m constructed in 2007, an additional upgrade to shorter escape spaces of approx. 400m was now required to comply with the updated legislation. Additional transformer tunnels, lay-by niches and small niches for emergency maintenance use, cleaning and other purposes, as well as a the installation of a new fire main in the invert, coupled with the simultaneous replacement of virtually the entire power and signaling cables, generated several dozen small and large single sites distributed along the 14km of tunnel.Purpose of the 37 walkable emergency escape tunnels is to reach the “upper deck” of the Arlbergtunnel, the vent duct plenum. These have an 180deg curve in plan, inclined at 10% and approx. 60m (65yd) long tunnels, excavated using drill and blast method starting from road level and working upwards to the level of an “intermediate soffit”, the vent duct plenum in the crown of the tunnel. The vent duct plenum is separated into a fresh air part and an exhaust air part, shown in Figure 1. The escape tunnels end with a pressure door in the fresh air section of the ventilation duct plenum. From there illuminated signs show the shortest escape route to the safe area between the road tunnel and the railway tunnel, as shown in Figure 2."

White Pine Copper Company operates a mine in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan using a modified room-and-pillar system for extracting ore.1 Mine production averages 15, 500 tons per day. The terrain is predominantly level and the depth of cover varies from 500 to 800 feet over the present workings with depth increasing as mining progresses down the dip. The deposit is situated on a low angle plunging, anticlinal structure composed of sedimentary beds. Local terminology for the stratigraphic units which contain the ore horizons, named in ascending order, is as follows: lower sandstone, parting shale, upper sandstone and upper shale. The ore zones of copper enrichment are, contained in the parting and upper shales. The parting shale will vary; from 6. 5 to 9.0 feet thick; the upper sandstone from 2 to 10 feet; and the upper shale from 1. 5 to 6. 5 feet. Two variation of the room-and-pillar system are used to extract the ore depending on grade and local ground conditions. One system is called the parting shale method and recovers the parting shale only. This system requires a mining height of 8 1/2 feet to accommodate large-scale, high-capacity equipment and this working height is obtained by removing approximately 1 to 2 feet of the barren lower sandstone with the ore. Under the second system, locally termed full column, the mining height is about 14-1/2 feet and this system removes the parting shale, the upper sandstone and the lower mineralized zone, approximately 1-1/2 feet, of the upper shale at which point it is possible to maintain a competent back (Fig. 1).1

"The Wilshire Grand redevelopment project in downtown Los Angeles includes construction of a new 73-story tower. Construction required excavation up to 93 feet deep (28 m). The south side of the excavation, up to 57 feet deep (17 m), required placement of shoring within about 6 to 10 feet (1.8 to 3.0 m) horizontally away from a 400-foot-long (122 m) section of one of the existing Los Angeles Metro Red Line twin subway tunnels. These tunnels were constructed using a 22-foot-diameter (6.7 m) digger shield, and were initially supported with expanded, precast concrete segments, with final cast-in-place reinforced concrete lining. The temporary shoring system for the deep excavation consisted of soldier piles generally spaced at 8 feet (2.4 m) on center with multiple levels of tieback anchors extending above the subway tunnels. The lowest level of bracing consisted of rakers supporting walers attached to the soldier beams because installation of tieback anchors at that level would conflict with the tunnels. Numerical analyses were performed to predict tunnel movement caused by the excavation and its effects on the train operations. This paper describes the numerical modeling, tunnel and geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring program, and comparison of the computed and observed tunnel responses to the deep excavation and tower construction. With increasing urban redevelopment in major cities, the project is a valuable case history for excavation adjacent to existing tunnels. INTRODUCTION The Wilshire Grand redevelopment project includes the demolition of a 16-story hotel built in the early 1950s and the construction of a new 73-story tower in downtown Los Angeles (LA) that will be the tallest building in the western United States. The project site is situated on approximately 2.7 acres (1.1 Ha) of land bounded by Figueroa Street to the east, Wilshire Boulevard to the north, Francisco Street to the west, and 7th Street to the south (see Figure 1a). The new tower is being constructed by Turner Construction for Hanjin International Corporation. Construction of the basement and foundation of the new tower required excavation up to 93 feet (28 m) deep. Shoring was designed by Cefali & Associates and installed by Malcolm Drilling Company. Along 7th Street, an excavation up to 57 feet (17 m) deep required shoring to be installed within about 6 to 10 feet (1.8 to 3.0 m) horizontally from an existing 400-foot long (122 m) section of one of the LA Metro Red Line subway tunnels (see Figure 1b). The tunnels, extending from the 7th/Metro Station to the Westlake-MacArthur Station, were constructed in the late 1980s and early 1990s with an excavated diameter of approximately 22 feet (6.7 m). They were initially supported with expanded, precast concrete segments with a final cast-in-place reinforced concrete lining. The existing hotel was demolished in 2012 and 2013, with shoring installation and excavation for the new basement occurring as the demolition occurred. At the time of writing, January 2016, the structure of the building adjacent to the tunnels is largely complete."

This paper presents an analysis of the dynamics of bit wear on the productivity of continuous miners. Two field surveys were carried out. The first survey assessed the impact of bit wear on productivity and production cost. The second survey studied the wear characteristics of the cutting tool (i.e., magnitude, forms, and mechanisms of bit wear, Primary factors affecting bit wear were identified. Laboratory experiments were carried out to study in detail the effect of some of these primary factors on wear. Results indicate, that bit wear has a significant effect on the productivity a continuous miners. Furthermore, under severe geologic conditions (i.e. cutting rock partings in roof and floor) bit wear not only hampers the productivity, but also increase the production cost due to a higher consumption of bits. This study also indicated that beyond 20% of the conical height loss (which corresponds to 7% of the weight loss) the rate a bit wear accelerates. This increased rate of wear is an indication of higher abrasion between bit body and cutting material, resulting in a dustier environment.

Storing natural gas in solution mined salt cavities appears to be one of the more promising methods being considered by some major gas transmission companies for meeting peak demands. Historically, these companies have been faced with the problem of meeting peak demands when the source of natural gas is located hundreds of miles from the marketing area. Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Corporation's position was further complicated because some of its offshore Gulf Coast gas supply wells may have to be shut in during hurricane alerts. Transco's solution was to construct. solution mined salt storage caverns adjacent to its pipeline near Eminence, Mississippi. (See Figure 1.) In 1965, Fenix & Scisson, Inc., was engaged by Transco to evaluate the feasibility of storing natural gas in caverns dissolved from salt at selected locations along Transco's pipeline to the East Coast. In June of that year a report was submitted to Transco concluding that this proposal was feasible and recommending several potential sites for storage development. Additional engineering and geological studies followed and in March 1968 the Eminence Salt Dome site was selected and storage construction began that year.

Pittsburgh #8 coal cleaned by the conventional froth flotation was oxidized in a 2-liter Parr Stirred Top Bench Reactor. The oxidation time was varied up to 5 hours; the temperature, from 150 to 225°C, the oxygen pressure, from 15 to 500 psi; and coal dosage, from 15 to 60 grams in 600 ml of distilled water. The oxidation of coal was evaluated by measuring total acidic group formed on the coal surface as well as by measuring the adsorption of calcium ion from a solution under standard conditions. It was found that the oxidation increased with increasing oxygen pressure without much leveling-off effect. However, the oxidation of coal increased sharply from 150°C to 175°C and then tended to level off above 175°C. The adsorption of calcium was reached more than 3% on the coal oxidized under favorable conditions. The adsorption of calcium on coal increased sharply with increasing equilibrium pH. The BTU loss was sensitive to oxidation temperature. This study concludes that the optimum oxidation of coal should be conducted at high oxygen pressures around (e.g. 500 psi) 170°C for 3 hours. This study also concludes that the oxidation in an autoclave is far superior to that in a fluidized bed in terms of calcium adsorption, BTU loss and reaction time.

It is a very difficult task to estimate the immediate roof and support behavior in a room-and-pillar mining section in the initial phase of the mining project. There is little information available at this phase, and it is restricted to geomechanic characterization of the rock layers from cores samples, and the in-situ instrumentation of experimental entries and intersections. Even being a pilot excavation for roof support test a good indicator for the behavior of the immediate roof, its behavior for a full excavation mining section is different from a single intersection of two entries, mainly because the stress redistribution caused by the multiple entries excavation and face advance for a full excavation section. The objective of this paper was to calibrate a 3-D numerical model of an experimental intersection, based on the in-situ instrumentation of an experimental intersection excavation, and the geomechanic description of the rock layers. The numerical model was built with the same specifications as the excavation test, including the entry geometry and roof support. The numerical model calibration was based on wire extensometers that were installed at different positions in the roof of the pilot excavation, and on the geomechanic characterization of the rock layers that form the roof, coal seam, and floor. Therefore, it is possible to estimate whether the roof support specification adopted in the test phase will be good enough for the development of the entire mining section.

Between 2005 and 2021, a NIOSH internal review showed that haul trucks were involved in 54 incidents at surface mines in the United States. Haul truck collision warning and avoidance systems (CXS) can assist in preventing accidents at surface mines. CXS use technologies to detect people or objects and alarm to alert haul truck operators. Robust testing can help ensure that they detect objects without excessive false positive alarms. Testing and validation would increase confidence in and encourage implementation of a CXS. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reviewed documents related to the evaluation and validation of CXS with two objectives: (1) to identify methods and parameters used to evaluate detection performance and (2) to identify gaps in CXS test methods and in detection performance. Stakeholders can use the findings from this research to guide implementation of CXS to improve safety at surface mines.

The Henderson mine site is located at Red Mountain on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains, approximately 50 miles west of Denver, Colorado. The mill site is on the west slope of the Rockies and mine and mill will be connected by an underground railroad. All designs were for a 30,000 ton per day molybdenite processing plant with provisions for future expansion up to 50,000 ton per day if required. This plan did not just happen, but slowly evolved over the course of about three and one-half years. Many plants cannot afford such a delay, but the Henderson project will take about 10 years from the time it was first discovered until production starts, and these 3 !1 years were well spent in determining the best possible plant site and flowsheet. This paper describes some of the problems and the decisions made in arriving at the final location and flowsheet. The paper does not go into the specific details of how protection of the environment went hand-in-hand with all other project considerations. This particular aspect of the planning has been well-reported on other occasions and considerable information on it is readily available.

This paper deals with the occurrence of basic and ultrabasic rocks and their relationship in space and time to major structures of the earth. In order to introduce the paper properly, I must go back a little and try to put the subject in perspective. In the brief time that geology has been a scientific occupation, ore deposits have been grouped and classified in various ways depending on the theories that happened to be popular at the time. Some of the early scientists said that ore came from fire, other schools argued that ore originated from water. Then came the lateral secretionists and in later years the hydrothermalists led by the Lindgren school and the latter has largely been accepted as the modern concept of ore deposits. It now seems apparent that the hydrothermal school is being seriously challenged by other schools of thought. It also seems that we have reached the point where we should be willing to admit that we do not really know in most cases how the ore got to its present position. However, for practical purposes, we can classify ore deposits as to the environment in which they do occur. This is not difficult and gives the field geologist and the mining engineer something to work with and to believe in, and it gives them a basis for carrying out their field work. New exhaust control techniques and devices may be necessary to meet future diesel particulate matter emission standards in underground coal mines. This paper reviews conventional work practices and devices used to control diesel exhaust emissions, and new techniques being tested by the Bureau of Mines. Discussions will center on important work practices and on the function and efficiency of exhaust after-treatment devices. An industry/government cooperative research project to develop and test an exhaust after-treatment system for part 36 equipment is also discussed.

Conventional methods of drillhole site selection are reviewed briefly. Two approaches using geostatistics are then discussed, both of which have been shown to yield improved results. Finally, a branch and bound algorithm is described which will select the best locations for drilling from a user specified number of possible drill sites. Two options are discussed. First, the user can specify a maximum drilling investment or a maximum number of drillholes and the program will select the locations yielding the minimum estimation variance. This amounts to getting the most for a given investment. Alternatively, a maximum tolerable estimation variance can be specified and the program will select the number and location of the drillholes to obtain the desired information at a minimum cost. Another benefit of the approach is the quantification of the tradeoffs between investment and information obtained.

FMC Corporation has achieved a significant cost reduction through a new proprietary solution mining and processing technology at its Green River, Wyoming Soda Ash Facility. In the first phase, completed in October 1995, trona ore is dissolved, recovered and processed with the new technology, and then fed into an existing refining plant, replacing dry mined and calcined trona ore. The second phase, completed in April 1996, produced a fmal high purity product and increased capacity by 635,000 t/a (700,000 tpy). Both phases were completed under budget and well ahead of schedule.

Deep open-pit mines are becoming increasingly common in the highly mineralized arctic and sub-arctic regions. Air inversion is a frequent occurrence in these regions, and is exacerbated by complex geometry of the open pit and the surrounding natural topography of an open-pit mine. The resulting inversion cap is known to contribute to the degradation of air quality in the open pit, resulting in loss of production. This paper discusses the development and validation of a three-dimensional model that simulate the flow of air and the transport of gaseous contaminants in an arctic open-pit mine and the analyzes effect of the geometry of the mine and the slope angle of the pit on the contaminants profiles in the mine.
