A site-characterization strategy formulated for the probabilistic assessment of rock mass properties is presented. The strategy, which takes into account the variability of rock properties and the stochastic nature of the rock-failure process, entails determining probability distributions of rock properties by utilizing extreme value statistics and Monte Carlo simulation. Laboratory and, field test data are analyzed and presented to illustrate the methodology. The results indicate that the distributive characteristics of rock mass can be estimated by using this proposed method. The results of the analysis can be incorporated into the design of underground structures. Then, the relative uncertainties of the failure probability of the structures can be assessed.

Australia has led the world in bauxite production since 1976, and only the Republic of Guinea has larger bauxite resources. India has a small integrated aluminum industry, and deposits containing more than 1 Gt (billion metric tons) of bauxite were discovered in the 1970's. The Peoples Republic of China has large bauxite resources scattered in several regions, but it is a monohydrate type that is difficult to process for aluminum. Indonesia and Malaysia both have long histories of bauxite mining, and both have limited resources of high-grade bauxite. Districts containing bauxite resources in the 10 Mt to 150 Mt (million metric tons) range are scattered in countries along the eastern rim of the Pacific Ocean, on islands in this ocean, and on the western and northern rims of the Indian Ocean.

This paper will not discuss the merits of one system over the other, but rather will discuss the Henderson Mill's approach toward achieving the most economical milling conditions in its existing SAG mills.

We in the coal industry, especially in the State of Illinois, put tremendous emphasis, including time, money and effort, into on-the-job training. The results of such training and safety have been tremendous. For example, in 1981 Illinois was the first major coal producing state in the history of coal mining to have zero mine-related fatalities. And in 1985, I am very proud to say, we had the second best record in the history of coal mining, with only two fatalities. Obviously, one fatality is one too many. Our goal is, has been and will continue to be to strive for excellence. It is sad, however, that in 1981 while were were celebrating zero fatalities in the workplace, there were 21 fatalities that occurred off the job. Thus, it has become a classic American story. Success with safety has been found in the workplace, but training and preparation to prevent accidents away from the job site have almost been ignored. Accidents are the leading causes of death in the United States for all persons age 1 thru 38, and are the fourth leading cause of death for people of all ages. Every single day, on the average, more than 290 Americans are killed in accidents - a rate of one every five minutes. The leading cause of fatal accidents in the U.S. is motor vehicles. And the number two cause is home accidents. A staggering statistic is that people are being killed off the job at a rate of about 9 to 1 over those on the job.

Laboratory data and field tests indicate that substantial losses of valuable coal can be caused by wind erosion. Wind tunnel tests show the effects of wind velocity and particle sizing on the amount of coal lost while in transit. Different coals were evaluated to determine the variables associated with wind erosion. The erosion losses can be substantially reduced by using a binder, or crusting agent, to consolidate the surfaces of the coal into a solid mass which resists erosion. This not only reduces economic loss but minimizes pollution.

This paper reviews various bauxite classification schemes with respect to the differences in texture, composition and geological associations of the deposits. It demonstrates that a techno-economic classification, based on: a) associated rock type - lateritic versus karstic, b) content of aluminum ore minerals - gibbsite, boehmite and diaspore, and c) gangue minerals (iron oxides etc.) has a geological basis with natural cut-off points for the bauxite types identified. Thus, this scheme is seen as applicable to bauxite resources. It also provides a basis for their rational exploitation taking into consideration the long-term interests of both the bauxite producing and consuming countries. Against this background, the industrial mineral or non-metallurgical grades of bauxite are seen as localised and relatively rare occurrences. Their consumption should, therefore, be aimed toward the specific (hence more remunerative) products as indicated by the bauxite characteristics.

But inversely it happens that the variable costs are reduced, i.e. the valuable material has a better recovery. The aim of this paper is to solve the problem by means of an economic balance of both parameters, in order to determine the optimum number of stages.

Of the six forms of asbestos, only three have been used to any significant extent in commerce. These are chrysotile, crocidolite, and amosite. Between 1870 and 1980, approximately 100 million tonnes of asbestos was mined worldwide, of which more than 90 million tonnes was the chrysotile variety, about 2.7 million tonnes the crocidolite variety, and about 2.2 million tonnes the amosite variety. The three principal diseases related to asbestos exposure are (1) lung cancer, (2) cancer of the pleural and peritoneal membranes (mesothelioma), and (3) asbestosis, a condition in which the lung tissue becomes fibrous and thus loses its ability to function. These diseases, however, are not equally prevalent in the various groups of asbestos workers that have been studied: the amount and type of disease depend on the duration of exposure, the intensity of exposure, and particularly, the type or types of asbestos to which the individual has been exposed. Lung cancer is caused by exposure to chrysotile, amosite, and crocidolite asbestos; however, increased risk of this disease is usually found only in those who also smoke. Asbestosis is caused by prolonged exposure to all forms of asbestos, whereas mesothelioma is principally caused by exposure to crocidolite asbestos. There is good evidence that chrysotile asbestos does not cause any significant amount of mesothelioma mortality, even after very heavy exposure. The common nonasbestiform amphibole minerals, cummingtonite, grunerite, tremolite, anthophyllite, and actinolite, which are often defined as "asbestos" for regulatory purposes, have not been shown to cause disease in miners. Chrysotile asbestos, which accounts for about 95 percent of the asbestos used in the United States, has been shown by extensive Canadian studies to be safe when exposures do not exceed 1 fiber per cm3 for the working lifetime. Chrysotile dust levels found in buildings rarely exceed 0.001 fibers per cm3. Such dust concentrations will have no measurable health effect on the building occupants. Present and future controls of minerals defined as "asbestos" and removal of asbestos from buildings and homes may cost many billions of dollars. Much of this expense is unnecessary and even counterproductive. Asbestos abatement could in fact produce a health risk to those exposed to dusts during and after removal operations overly restrictive controls could force the use of poor or dangerous substitutes, and could greatly affect the hard-rock mining industry.

The single line grinding circuit at Bond Gold's Colosseum mine consists of variable speed drive semi-autogenous (SAG) milling and secondary grinding with a fixed speed ball mill. There are several advantages and disadvantages of operating SAG mills with variable speed drives. Discussion in this paper will focus on the effects of variable speed SAG milling in relation to mill liner wear, grinding media consumption, and mill operating availability. Operating experiences, corresponding mill data, and pertinent design changes are also presented.

The Klondike symbolized one of mankind's driving forces - the desire to lay one's hands on a scarce resource, gold, in that case - and in doing so to make some money along the way. It can be argued that construction aggregates - a once lowly and ignored sector of the natural resource industries - have become the desired targets of their own "Klondike." This began in the 1970s and accelerated to a frantic pace in the 1980s. The scope of industrial minerals is very wide. It ranges from high value minerals such as talc, bentonite and kaolinite to the truly humble minerals of sands and gravels, limestones and granites. Their major end uses are in construction aggregates. A rich variety of different mineral types all make good construction aggregates. However, those successfully used have two fundamentals in common: • Their technical characteristics are appropriate for the requirements of their end use. • They are located within an economic distance from the market. The North American market This is the largest construction ag¬gregate market in the world. Consumption in 1990 reached 2.2 Gt/a(2.5 billion stpy). This rate of consumption has grown steadily over the past decades. In the United States, from 1963 to 1989, it averaged a 1.6% compound growth rate. Within this long-term trend, there are business cycles, because aggregate demand is closely linked to economic strength or weakness. The North American market also displays the greatest per capita demand for aggregates when compared to the major industrial economies (Table 1).

A miner working in an underground coal mine with diesel equipment is exposed to a wide array of pollutants from the diesel exhaust. These include CO, CO2, NO, NO2, SO2, diesel-exhaust aerosol, and a variety of hydrocarbon compounds. A quantitative definition of the health risk resulting from these exposures remains elusive, but during the past several years, progress has been made in defining the problem. Results from epidemiological studies by Garshick, et al. (1988); animal inhalation studies by Mauderly, et al. (1986); Iwai, et al. (1986); and Brightwell, et al. (1986); and in vitro studies by Lewtas, et al. (1986), have provided sufficient data for the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to recommend that "whole diesel exhaust be regarded as a 'potential occupational carcinogen,' as defined in the Cancer Policy of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration," NIOSH (1988). NIOSH further stated that "though the excess risk of cancer in diesel-exhaust-exposed workers has not been quantitatively estimated, it is logical to assume that reduction in exposure to diesel exhaust in the workplace would reduce the excess risk."

Simulation modeling of portions of two platinum mines using General Purpose Simulation Software (GPSS/H™) is presented in this paper. Both mines, located in the Bushveld Igneous Complex PIC) of South Africa, exploit Merensky and UG2 reef horizons, which are processed separately and therefore handled individually from the stope face to surface, requiring duplication of storage arrangements and batch operation of transport facilities. The first simulation assignment concerns the upgrading of a shaft system operating exclusively on Merensky ore, to hoist UG2 ore and increase production. The second assignment comprises a simulation of rock flow from the stope face to surface by way of tramming, inclined conveying and vertical hoisting. Development ends and stope boxholes were modeled down to individual hoppers (cars) demonstrating the versatility of the GPSS/H™ language.

Aragonite "sand," an oolitic lime-stone, is distributed throughout the Bahamas on the Grand Bahama Bank, adjacent to Southeast Florida. Bahamian deposits hold 75-100 billion tons of recoverable Aragonite. Aragonite's precipitation from seawater over 700 years ago assures low contaminates, making it a pure material for such industries as cement, glass, etc. A 90-acre, man-made production island was built south of Bimini, adjacent to ocean shipping channels mining is by cutterhead, suction dredge, dewatering, and stockpiling for further drainage and shipping. Aragonite is transferred to the U. S. East and Gulf Coasts via bulk carriers to points of sale.

By means of laboratory balling tests and a procedure for determining bentonite concentration in a green ball the present study revealed that the bentonite savings by mulling concentrate and bentonite prior to balling was sufficient to warrant installation of a full-size unit in a pellet plant. On the basis of this work, a muller was put on stream at Bethlehem Steel Corporation's Cornwall pellet plant in June 1969, and has operated continuously since then. Plant tests showed that the use of the muller resulted in bentonite savings of about -502 without any loss of green, dry, and fired ball quality. Virtually no maintenance problems have been encountered. This information is important to future pelletizing operations both from the standpoint of product quality and economics.

In beneficiation of phosphate ores it is common to use screening to produce the coarse "pebble" concentrate, and flotation to process the -1+0.1 mm size fraction. The -0.1 mm desliming product is treated as tailings. A new partially hydrophobic flocculant, P(MAAA) latex was developed to enhance flotation recovery of fine apatite particles through selective flocculation.

"Shale gas has become an increasingly important source of natural gas supply in North America and around the world. Horizontal drilling and multi-stage hydraulic fracturing are the two key enabling technologies for the economic development of these shale gas reservoirs. It is believed that gas in shale reservoirs is mainly composed of free gas within fractures and pores and adsorbed gas in organic matter (kerogen). It is generally assumed in the literature that the monolayer Langmuir isotherm describes gas adsorption behavior in shale gas reservoirs. In this work, we have analyzed several experimental measurements of methane adsorption from the Horn River Shale core samples that obey the Langmuir isotherm. INTRODUCTION In nature, gas shales are characterized by extremely small grain size, extremely low permeability on the order of nano-Darcy (10-6 md), small porosity, and high total organic carbon (TOC). Shale can serve as both source and reservoir rock. The amount of gas in place in shale is strongly affected by the TOC, clays, and the adsorption ability of methane on the internal surface of solid (Martin et al., 2010). Since a considerable amount of gas in shale reservoirs is adsorbed, investigation of gas adsorption can provide critical insights into evaluation of well performance and reservoir characterization. Generally, natural gas in shale reservoirs is stored as free gas in both larger mineral pores and natural fractures, as well as adsorbed gas within organic matter (Leahy-Dios et al., 2011). EXPERIMENT METHOD & THEORY Adsorption Experiment Several experiments were carried out on 9 shale core samples obtained in a vertical well drilled within Horn River basin (Figure 1). The CH4 adsorption isotherms were measured for the different depth. In order to measure the amount of adsorbed gas, the high pressure Belsorp-HP equipment applying volumetric method was used. The temperature was kept at 298 K and pressure was increased up to 18 MPa. Approximately 5 g of crushed sample was used for each measurement."

Developing a laboratory procedure for the determination of coal-seam compressive strength has been a subject of discussion for many decades, and the reliability of laboratory determinations is often the subject of debate. A coal seam’s characteristics, the method of sample collection, the specimen preparation method and the testing procedure can often result in drastic variations in the test results. In this paper, the development of a laboratory testing procedure for the determination of coal-seam compressive strength is presented. Two samples that were collected from different coal seams were tested in this study. First, the inherent characteristics, i.e., coal structure. Hardgrove grindability index (HGI), Slake durability index, proximate analysis and mechanical properties (Young's modules and Poisson's ratio), of each coal were determined. The results were used to categorize the coal scams in terms of the characteristics liable to produce variable strength data in typical laboratory tests. Second, two commonly used laboratory specimen shapes, cylindrical and cubical, were tested to determine which shape produced the most reproducible strength values. Third, four loading rates within the static testing range, i.e., 0.007, 0.07, 0.34 and 0.7 MPa/s (1.0, 10, 50 and 100 psi/sec), were used to determine the ideal loading rate. Finally, the number of test samples required to produce strength data within the acceptable standard deviation, considering coal seam characteristics, were established. Background Laboratory testing of coal specimens for the determination of seam compressive strength has been a subject of discussion since the early 1900s. Many researchers have tested coal specimens to estimate coal-seam compressive strength for use in pillar design to insure the safe operation of [ ] mines (Unrug et al., 1986; and Hirt et al.. 1992). Yet, there is a lack of a universal procedure, and, no matter which approach is used, it becomes the subject of intensive debate. A great deal of work has been performed on the subject, and there is much information available in the literature. Some of this work concerns quantifying the influence of specimen shape and size on compressive strength (Bieniawski. 1968: Barron et al.. 1992: Khair and Xu 1994; and Khair 1994). As indicted in the literature, coal is a heterogeneous material, consisting of discontinuities such as cleats and bedding planes, which are likely to produce variable strength results (Holland, 1964; Unrug et al., 1986). Surface mining of coal in the South developed into a major industry during the 1960's. The economic significance of the industry is much greater than is readily apparent when one considers only the value of the coal mined. The abun-dant supply of relatively inexpensive steam coal for electric power generation that has been derived from the surface mines has provided the foundation for the industrial expansion that has occurred throughout the South. The region, in gen-eral, has enjoyed the benefits of plentiful low cost electric power. However, re-cent political decisions, at all levels of government, threaten to destroy or severely curtail the surface mining of coal and eliminate the economic advantages once enjoyed by the region. These political decisions are rapidly changing the basic rules of operation and fundamental economics of surface coal mining. Recent changes, resulting from the enactment of environmental and health and safety laws and various bureaucratic rules and regulations, have had a three-fold effect: 1) Greatly increased operating cost, 2) increased lead times for mine development, 3) limited potential reserve base for future mining. Also current legislative proposals are casting a shadow of uncertainty over the future of all coal mining operations that has created serious delays and in-creased cost for the expansion of the coal industry necessary to meet our project independence goals. Technology Surface mining is the safest and most economical way to produce raw materials from the earth's crust. It also affords a more healthier working environment for the individual miner. INTRODUCTION Shotcrete can be defined as spray-applied concrete with a maximum size aggregate in excess of 9.5 mm (0.375 in.). The concept evolved from guniting, which uses smaller aggregate and generally produces concrete with poorer physical properties. The larger aggregate used in shotcrete requires less water in the mix, while offering larger bonding surfaces, thus imparting greater tensile and compressive strengths. TYPES OF MACHINES Two basic designs of shotcrete machines in general use are the wet or prehydrated zero slump and low slump type, and the dry or nozzle hydrated machines. Fig. 1 shows a typical zero-slump machine in a con¬figuration commonly used for small-volume require¬ments. The prehydrated zero-slump machine mixes exactly proportioned batches in a sealed pressurized chamber. "Slugs" of hydrated shotcrete mix and com¬pressed air are sent through a distribution hose to the nozzle where the wet mix emerges as a spray. The spray is directed onto the rock surface by the nozzle operator. The low-slump machine is similar, except that a thick slurry mix of aggregate is delivered throughout the distribution hose to the nozzle. Fig. 2 shows a typical low-slump shotcrete machine used in moderate-volume applications. The nozzle-hydrated shotcrete machine accepts a premixed "dry" (4 to 6% moisture) batch of aggregate and cement. A constant feed of this mix is directed by compressed air through the distribution hose to the nozzle. At the nozzle, water for hydration is introduced into the emerging spray. The hydrated mixture is di¬rected onto the rock surface by the nozzle operator. Fig. 3 shows a typical dry-mix machine. The major difference between the two basic machine designs is the consistency of the shotcrete quality. Pre¬hydrated machines have high degrees of consistency and produce high-strength concrete, resulting from their ability to produce exact mixtures of zero or low-slump concrete within the machine. Nozzle-hydrated machines tend to produce poorer quality concrete because of the difficulty in controlling the water content at the nozzle. Water input essentially is an art.
