In the, West, walking draglines often offer the least cost method of uncovering coal for surface mines. However, with each of these machines costing millions of dollars, a good deal of analysis can be justified by the potenial savings or, conversely, costs associated with the choice of a machine. This has resulted in the recent development of a number of computerized models for dragline selection and pit design. One of the earliest reported models for this purpose was developed by Dunlap and Jacobs (1). Later, Rumfeldt described the computer approach to sizing stripping draglines given the required production rate and mine site parameters (2). This basic approach is probably still the most widely used with models for more complicated mining methods reported by Stefanko, Tomica, Finch, as well as others (3,4,5). furthermore, detailed simulation models useful in this regard have been developed by McDonnell Douglas and Fluor, Utah (6,7)

Acid rock drainage (ARD) represents one of the most intractable problems faced by the non-ferrous metal and coal mining sectors, and the creation in the recent past of a number of high-level national and international initiatives reflects the growing concerns of industry, government and other stakeholder groups. ARD is certainly considered one of the most serious environmental impacts caused by mining and the industry's greatest environment-related technical challenge. Additionally, the global depletion of non-acid generating oxide ore deposits and the increasing dominance of sulphide ores means that the potential for ARD incidents will continue to increase. Once initiated, the cycle of chemically and biologically mediated and catalysed reactions leading to ARD generation is difficult to stop. While there is evidence to suggest that the degree of contamination of ARD will decrease rapidly within a relatively short timeframe (Wood et al., 1999), experience in historic mining regions of the world indicates that the problem may persist for centuries at certain sites. Current best practice in dealing with ARD puts the emphasis on prediction and prevention, planned from the outset of the operation and integrated with each phase of the mine site life cycle. The elements that constitute best practice are becoming more clearly defined and as this process of clarification continues industry will undoubtedly accelerate the process of best practice implementation, burying at last the image of mining as a despoiler and polluter of landscapes, an image based on past, rather than current, practices. However, it is equally clear that despite the best efforts of industry and regulators, many sites will continue to generate ARD during operation and following closure - in many cases, a legacy of ARD has been derived from operational and strategic decisions made decades ago, before the risks and impacts of the self-sustaining cycle of ARD generation were properly understood. Add to this ARD generation from poorly managed operations and from historic and abandoned sites, and it becomes clear that the treatment of ARD will be required for the foreseeable future to protect water quality, and ecosystem and human health.

Modern metallurgical processing often depends heavily on the use of flocculants to achieve the high levels of efficiency required. Selection of the optimum polymer can be complicated by the effects of process streams on the chemical and physical stability of the chosen polymer. Similarly, the presence of the polymer can have positive or negative side effects on process streams, such as phase disengagement in solvent extraction, foaming at filters and thickeners, crystal growth modification or flotation performance. Guidelines are given to highlight areas where problems may occur and suggestions made as to how these can be overcome. Practical advice on the preparation and application of polymers in process liquors is provided.

The crushing and milling of mineral bearing ores can now be accomplished more efficiently through the application of WaterFlush technology. WaterFlush crushing has reduced capital and operating costs for the processing of a lead/zinc ore in South America. Similar benefits can be expected in the processing of other ores. WF cone crushers offer improved performance over conventional cone crushers. Performance improvements include the ability to crush wet and sticky ores, increased reduction ratios and greater production of flakier and finer products.

The benefits of computer simulation in the design of a refracto­ry gold autoclave facility is discussed. Three computer simula­tion programs used for autoclave design are briefly described in this paper. 1) METS IM® - A Process Simulation Software Package Developed by Proware: Mass and energy balances are conducted around the auto­clave and its ancillary processes. Results from the process simulation define process equipment requirements and are used for establishing operating costs. The p_rocess model integrates various unit operations including grinding, acidu­lation, pressure oxidation, counter-current-decantation, neutralization, cyanide leaching, and carbon-in-pulp or car­bon-in-leach. 2) ALGOR® - Finite Element Analysis (FEA): A computer software program is used in the design and analysis of brick lined pressure vessels, such as autoclave, heater, and flash vessels. This software creates a steady state thermal model, and accurately predicts temperature distribution throughout the entire vessel, including nozzles, which represent regions of high thermal intensity. 3) Compress©: A software package developed by Codeware used for the sizing of pressure vessel components, includ­ing shells, heads and nozzles, according to ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Division 1.

PCS Phosphate operates an open-pit phosphate mine in the central coastal plane of North Carolina. The company has mining and refining facilities located on the south shore of the Pamlico River. Phosphate ore is recovered at the Aurora facility by open-cast mining techniques. Walking draglines and bucketwheel excavators remove the overburden and mine the phosphate ore. The mined ore is slurried about 8 km (5 miles) to the processing plant. At the plant, the phosphate ore slurry is passed through screens to remove material coarser than 2 mm (10 mesh) and then pumped through hydrocyclones to remove material finer than 75 mm (200 mesh). The resulting phosphate and sand mixture is treated with various reagents and subjected to an anionic flotation process. A cationic flotation process removes the sand from the final phosphate concentrate.

Open pit optimization and mine design depend upon a realistic estimate of the grade-tonnage dis¬tribution. The estimate should reflect what can be reasonably recovered and processed. The McCoy/Cove operation in central Nevada is a gold and silver mine. Recoverable reserve estimations of gold and silver were made using indicator kriging and the indirect log normal variance correction to construct the grade- tonnage distribution. Optimal pits were generated using this distribution, and the results were compared to the pits generated by ordinary kriging and indicator kriging block mean methods. The results indicate that the proposed method for multimetal recoverable reserve estimation shows an improvement in terms of predicting the recoverable tons and grades. The optimal pits generated from the recoverable resource model are larger than those generated by the ordinary kriging and indicator kriging block mean methods. This model maximizes the overall recovery of the mineral resource.

Many consider rougher flotation control to be more of an art than a science. Some have even thought it impossible to make process control decisions and changes without human interaction. Controlling flotation bank pulp levels to maintain consistent pulling rates in the face of changing feed slurry flow rates, varying mineral types, and inconsistent reagent additions can be daunting. However, an advanced supervisory control strategy was installed on the plant floor to control an industrial rougher flotation circuit with little or no operator interaction. Plant staff monitored the flotation circuit under supervisory control and reported benefits of up to 4% improvement in copper recovery above that achieved with an older supervisory control strategy. To accomplish this work, a novel use of instrumentation to solve a flotation bank pulp level control problem was employed, a new implementation approach was used to correct some flaws in the older approach, and careful attention was paid to a few key process control principles. This paper discusses important aspects of these activities.

Nickel is present in a number of gold ores in Australia, Africa and the United States. The effects and behaviour of the nickel during the cyanidation and adsorption processes, and also during the elution and electrowinning processes have been examined by a number of researchers, usually as a part of a larger investigation. This paper examines the available data on the behaviour and effect of nickel during cyanidation and its associated unit processes. The presence of nickel is often not considered to be particu­larly important as it does not cause the same degree of problems across the circuit as those experienced in the presence of copper. It can however lead to increased cyanide consumption during leaching, and reduced adsorption of gold onto carbon. A proportion of nickel cyanide may be removed from carbon prior to elution by carrying out a hot (90° C) acid wash. The nickel which remains on the carbon will be partially eluted during the main elution step, and, dependent on its concentration in the pregnant solution, part of it may be deposited during electrowinning. There is always a risk that any nickel remaining on the carbon after the elution step will be reduced to metallic nickel during the regeneration step. This may ultimately result in an increasing base level of nickel on the carbon, as metallic nickel is insoluble in both cyanide and hydrochloric acid.

This study describes the economic-technological model of copper flotation which can help determine, for the given technological and market conditions, an optimal percentage of copper in concentration, whereby the maximum revenue is achieved per ton of the processed ore in the process of flotation.

Underground rock drilling has gone through intense development during the last 25 years. Mechanization and hydraulics have greatly increased the efficiency of drilling and improved the environment of the drill operator. As the total economy has become more and more important, the development has resulted in greater overall economy in drilling. The latest evolution step is computerization of drilling equipment. Computerization has been applied to tunnelling jumbos, long- hole drilling rigs and bolting rigs. With today's technology computerization is the natural way to increase capacity and productivity of the drilling process. However, it is still impractical to implement total "robotic" drilling. In computerized drilling the operator's role continues to be vital in controlling the drilling process and in analyzing the effect of individual parameters on the whole excavation process. Today this is called "CAD" - Computer Aided Drilling.

The growing demand for rare earth elements (REEs) has led to numerous recent studies to recover these elements from various bearing ores and wastes. Therefore, the recovery of REEs from Ras Baroud polymetallic concentrate has been investigated in the current study. Physical beneficiation for the Ras Baroud pegmatite sample was carried out, yielding a concentrate for euxenite (Y), fergusonite (Y), xenotime (Y), monazite (Ce), allanite, thorite, uranothorite and Hf-zircon, which resulted in raising the concentrations of REEs, Th, Zr, U and Ti in the sample. Fusion digestion processes with sodium hydroxide were studied using the conceived predictive diagonal (CPD) technique. The three experimental digestion groups proved the dissolution of 99.9, 95.6, 99.9, 52.5 and 0.47 percent for REEs, Th, U, Ti and Zr, respectively, under fusion conditions of 723 K, 120 min, 1/1.5 ore-to-alkali ratio, and smaller than 100-μm particle sizes. Fusion kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamics were investigated using several suggested models, namely, pseudo reversible first order, uptake general model and shrinking core model, which matched well with the experimental digestion results. Selective recovery of actinide content from the REE content of the digested concentrate chloride solutions was accomplished using solvent extraction with di-2-ethyl hexyl phosphoric acid. About 99.9, 99.9 and 4.2 percent extraction efficiencies for Th, U and REEs were realized, respectively, using 0.3 mol/L solvent concentration in kerosene as a diluent, 1/2 organic-to-aqueous ratio, aqueous pH of 0.2 and contact time of 15 min. Thorium and uranium ions were stripped with 2.5 mol/L sulfuric acid solution with 94 and 98 percent stripping efficiency, respectively. A highly purified REE precipitate was obtained from the raffinate solutions. Zircon mineralization tailings were obtained as a byproduct through the alkaline digestion process.

Glamorous, burgeoning biotechnology and mundane industrial minerals would at first glance seem to share little in common, but in truth, modern biotechnology depends on many minerals. Biotechnical processes also can be used in industrial mineral extraction and processing. Biotechnology is broadly defined as the application of biological organisms, systems, or processes to manufacturing and service industries. Genetic engineering has reinvigorated one of mankind's oldest sciences, biotechnology, into a booming business. Many modern processes depend on microorganisms cultivated under very stringent conditions in bioreactors. Minerals from carbonate, sulfate, chloride, nitrate, phosphate, and silicate families are used to provide essential nutrients and to regulate growth conditions (such as pH) in order to assure optimal growth of organisms. Certain cells or enzymes perform better when immobilized upon or within solids, and minerals are often used to immobilize cells, especially in continuous process. Minerals are also used extensively in separating and purifying products of biotechnology. Diatomite, zeolites, and silica are especially useful in purification processes. Industrial minerals also are commonly used to clean up large volumes of process water that must be treated. Biotechnology can be employed in exploration, extraction, and processing of geologic materials and in reducing mining or other environmental problems through bioremediation. Microbes have been shown to solubilize certain elements and so promote extraction of heavy metals, phosphate, aluminum, potassium, and even rare earth elements. In a related technique, unwanted materials such as pyrite impurities can be leached microbially to produce cleaner products in sand and clay industries. Microbial actions can modify surface characteristics and so enhance certain ceramic properties. Certain organisms can accumulate useful elements from dilute sources; others can transform unusable chemical species to more useful forms. Deterioration of stone, concrete, and even glass or brick, can be accelerated by microorganisms. Control of such biodeterioration could improve long-term performance of industrial mineral products. Microbial processes have shown promise in improving several mine-related problems. Certain bacteria help remove clays from phosphate slimes and other suspensions. Others are used to degrade cyanide or other organic chemicals such as floatation aids. Cells immobilized on clays have been especially efficacious in bioremediation. Biotechnology industries, like the industrial minerals industries, encompass huge ranges of materials and processes. Costs of products from these industries range from pennies to thousands of dollars per unit, and their products are vital for maintaining modern life styles. Many biotechnical processes depend upon industrial minerals and certain biological processes can be harnessed to do useful tasks in the minerals field. The interplay of industrial minerals and biotechnology is important today, and as biotechnology advances, its interaction with the industrial minerals industry can only increase.

The device called "Dynastat" which is described in this paper provides in situ borehole measurements of dynamic and static parameters for use in a wide range of design applications. In the dynamic mode, the Oynastat allows measurement of shear and compressional wave velocities. From these velocities in situ dynamic Young's modulus and other dynamic elastic parameters can be calculated. In the static mode, the device allows measurement of load versus deformation from which in situ static Young's modulus can be determined. Information on in situ horizontal stress fields can also be estimated from the load deformation curves. In both mining and civil engineering applications, in situ measurements of material properties are indispensable for accurate evaluation of design problems. Laboratory dynamic and static test measurements in comparison to in situ measurements are often misleading due to difficulties in obtaining undisturbed samples and in accounting for effects of discontinuities, etc., for mass properties. The authors contend that among in situ borehole measurements, the method employed with the Dynastat is the most accurate and detailed technique of measurement. The Dynastat employs the crosshole method of shear and compressional wave velocity measurements and also performs as a borehole jack to obtain load-deformation relationships of materials at exactly the same location at depth in boreholes.

A gaseous chlorination process for the hydrometallurgical treatment of a chalcopyrite concentrate was investigated. The overall process is visualized to consist of low-temperature chlorination -selective oxidation, followed by aqueous chloride leaching and SX-EW for producing electrolytic copper, elemental sulfur and ferric oxide. In this article, the chlorination phase of the process is described. Initially, the chlorination behavior of chalcopyrite concentrate micropellets was investigated using a small batch-type fluidized bed reactor. The optimum conditions thereby established were used in continuous chlorination tests. The chlorinated products thus prepared were used in the selective oxidation phase of the investigation.

Introduction Net Present Value (NPV) techniques are becoming widely used in industry as a standard analytical tool in making capital budgeting decisions. However, NPV techniques are often misused in "common practice." A comparison was made between the use of NPV techniques in common practice and an Adjusted Net Present Value (ANPV) approach to capital budgeting in the financial analysis of a mining project. The comparison was made by applying both methods to a hypothetical copper project. The intent of the analysis is to provide an example for practitioners to follow when financially analyzing mining (or other) projects. To maintain the thrust of the analysis, the project has been evaluated as a stand alone, total project. No consideration has been made of the division of cash flows accruing to various owners over the life of the project. This omission will not affect the comparative nature of the analysis. This discussion assumes that the reader is familiar with present value as a concept and as a tool in capital budgeting. Finance theory has embraced NPV analysis as the correct way to evaluate capital budgeting alternatives. Many articles have been written expounding the virtues of NPV over other capital budgeting methods, such as Internal Rate of Return (IRR), Payback, Accounting Rate of Return, and others. It is not the purpose of this article to review all of the literature in this area; suffice it to say that in academic circles NPV concepts are accepted as the norm. A survey by Schall, Sundem, and Geijsbeck (1978) indicates that major US companies are finally following in academia's footsteps. Fifty-six percent of the companies responding to the survey use NPV techniques in their capital budgeting process. Further, some 86% of the companies surveyed use discounted cash flow methods (NPV or IRR) for capital budgeting decisions. This compares with a survey by Klammer (1972) that showed 57% of companies using both techniques, a considerable increase in seven years. With the increasing use of NPV techniques in industry, there are certain uses in common practice that can give misleading results. Five common errors in NPV analysis of large projects are: • No distinction is made between real and nominal cashflows. • The discount rate(s) used in the NPV analysis is not formally adjusted for risk. • There is no distinction of possible differences in the riskiness of different project cash flows; i.e., revenue vs. depreciation. • There is no recognition of the cash benefits to the project from interest tax shields (interest payments on the project's debt that are tax deductible). • There is no clear recognition of subsidies to the project from concessionary debt financing. No Distinction Between Real and Nominal Cash Flows Often, expected cash flows for a project are stated as a mixture of real (in constant dollars) and nominal (in current dollars) cash flows. For example, expected revenue cash flows may be stated in real terms and depreciation may be stated in nominal terms. If cash flows are added together to give an after tax cash flow, and this single cash stream is discounted, care must be taken to ensure that cash flows are consistently stated. All cash flows should either be stated in nominal terms or in real terms. In addition, the discount rate used must be stated in the same terms as the cash flows being discounted. Real cash flows must be discounted using real discount rates and nominal cash flows using nominal discount rates. The opportunity for an exploration geologist to follow a successful exploration project through the feasibility, financing, construction, development, and exploitation phase is rare. In addition, it is not often that the exploration geologist can be present during the mining of a deposit to explain why certain actions were taken or interpretations made, and to find out how these interpretations turned out in actuality. At the Woodsreef chrysotile asbestos mine in New South Wales, Australia, mining has been- in progress for seven years and the writer of this chapter has been intimately associated with the project during the five years of exploration and seven years of exploitation. The Woodsreef mine has had major production problems, the majority of which have stemmed from the unique characteristics of the ore body and fiber. Because of the latter feature, much research has been undertaken by Woods- reef and other scientific organizations in Australia, England, and Canada regarding the Woodsreef fiber. The answers to some of the problems have negated some accepted concepts of asbestos ore milling and led to the development of new techniques. Some of these new techniques include the adoption of microscopic fiber counts as a routine procedure, the modification of accepted evaluation procedures, the development of new machines for dedusting fibers, and the recognition of a fiber with a unique milling behavior pattern and, possibly, properties. The problems experienced can be broadly divided into those associated with the geology and the physical properties of the fiber. It is possible that the same features may manifest themselves in other deposits around the world, and if they can be recognized during the exploration stages, a feasiblity evaluation may be just a little closer to the actual. The Woodsreef chrysotile asbestos deposit (latitude 30°24' S, longitude 150°44' E) is located 80 km north of Tamworth, NSW, Australia. The mine has been in production for six years and has a present scheduled mining rate of 33.11 Mt/y. An eight rock line mill treats an average of 7000 t/day, after beneficiation, and yields fiber grades in the range of group 4 to group 6 with some floats. The estimated re- serves of 30.56 Mt, with an ore to waste ratio of 1:3.0, are contained in two main zones that are designated the North and South zones. Mining started in the South Zone in 1972 and then, be- cause of the higher ore value, moved to the North Zone in 1975. Presently, there are two distinct open cuts referred to as the South and North pits that will eventually be worked together. The Woodsreef mine is owned by Woodsreef Mines Ltd. and is operated by Chrysotile Corp. of Australia Pty. Ltd., and is one of only two producing asbestos mines in Australia. The second mine is at Baryulgil, (latitude 29°13' S, longitude 152°37' E), and is operated by a subsidiary of Woodsreef Mines Ltd. This operation produces about 500 t/y for a captive market. An exploration program is being conducted in the area surrounding this small producer with a significant degree of success. The concepts developed during the exploitation of the Woodsreef deposit are being incorporated in the evaluation of the Baryulgil area, and if the Baryulgil deposit proves to be eco- nomic it is hoped that this approach will eliminate some of the major crises that have beset the production at Woodsreef during the first four years of operation. The Akjoujt Project is operated by MORAK SA, a company incorporated in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. MORAK is jointly owned by General Gold International SA (A wholly owned subsidiary of General Gold Resources NL.), SAMIN, and the International Finance Corporation. The project was devel­oped to treat approximately 2.1 million tonnes of TORCO (Treatment of Refractory Copper Ores) tailings containing an average 3.2gAu/t, and 0.75%Cu/t. The process involves the use of ammoniacal cyanidation for gold extraction, and conventional carbon adsorption, and eventual desorption, of gold values. This is believed to be only the second commercial application of this leach chemistry in the world. The other being a small vat leach operation on the Paris Mine Dumps. (This operation was described by Mr M Ruane in a paper to a previous Randol Forum.) Initial work on the process, and the Akjoujt process design assumed that the reaction involved was anaerobic. This paper describes the operating experience, plant trial, and eventual installation which has lead MORAK to the conclusion that the process is not anaerobic, but requires oxygen, or an oxidant to proceed.

Two methods used to measure the exposure of mine workers to diesel exhaust particulate were compared. One method was developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Minnesota's Particle Technology Laboratory. The method which was originally developed for use in coal mines is a size selective sampling technique. The other method uses an “ashing" approach to assess the exposure to diesel particulate. This second method is based on the principles of sampling according to the ACGIH respirable dust sampling criteria and the use of a silver membrane filter as collection substrate. Because a silver membrane filter is used, both respirable combustible dust (diesel particulate) and respirable silica can be measured from one sample. The comparison study took place in a Canadian lead-zinc mine during tests which were primarily designed to evaluate the gaseous and particulate emissions characteristics of new diesel engine technology. The study has shown that under the test conditions encountered, some differences were observed between the results as obtained by the two methods. These differences seem to depend on the characteristics of the respirable dust found in the work- place, i.e., size and composition. The impact, on sampling and analysis of diesel particulate, of the proposed guideline (ACGIH) for a TLV® of 0.15 mq/m3 is discussed briefly.
