Introduction The history of the Australian coal industry is almost as old as the history of Australia after new settlement. The first cargo of coal was exported from Newcastle to India in 1799. Coal has been mined in Australia for almost two centuries. But there are indications that the first coal was processed in 1877 in the Newcastle area. This is nearly 50 years after the first coal processing in Europe. Processing on any significant scale began in 1944 at the Newcastle Steel Works. In Queensland, however, coal processing did not begin until the second quarter of this century. The dramatic growth of mining and processing of Australian coal since the mid-60s is primarily due to the expansion of the export market in Japan, Asia, and Europe. Australian coals Black coal occurs in most of the major sedimentary basins of Australia. The better known deposits of commercial importance are in the Sydney, Bowen, Oakland, and Gailiee Basins. Apart from the Collie Basin in western Australia, other coal deposits of the Arckinga Basin in South Australia, the Bonaparte Basin in Northern Territory, and the Tasmania Basin are basically unexploited. The Sydney Basin of New South Wales and Bowen Basin of Queensland remain the major producers of black coal in Australia. Currently exploited or potentially commercial deposits of black coal in Australia occur in strata ranging in age from Permian to Tertiary. Estimated black coal reserves are summarized in Table 1. Coals from different ages have significant differences in their petrographic characteristics. Many of the Permian coals are usually rich in inertinite. Jurassic and Tertiary coals are typically rich in vitrinite content. Typical petrographic and chemical characteristics of some important Australian coking coals are summarized in Tables 2 and 3. The reserves of coking coals are restricted in the main to the Permian coals of the Sydney and Bowen Basins. Coal deposits in the latter are at shallow depth. A high percentage of these are being strip-mined. On the other hand, in the Sydney Basin, the majority of the reserves of good quality coking coals are at significant depth. The mining cost of these deposits is substantially higher than those in the Bowen Basin. It is usually possible to make strong coke with Australian Permian coals of vitrinite content much lower than the other international coals. But there are many major Permian deposits in Australia where low vitrinite content presents problems. As they are classified as marginal coking coals, optimization of their pro¬cessing plays an important role in meeting the market specifications of coking coal. The major reason for processing Australian coal is to reduce the ash content. Compared with British and some American coals, Australian coals are of relatively high ash content. Unlike American coals, more than 99% of the Australian coal deposits have sulfur content less than 1%. Consequently, sulfur control has never been a major problem. The purpose of developing this system is to monitor the operating status of the fully mechanized mining system in order to raise it's reliability. The completely mechanized coal mining system is a complex dynamic system, involving many sub-systems. It is the key of the mining process as well as a connected system composed of each working procedure. Any hitch in breaking, loading or transporting will interrupt the mining process. The analyses of the operating data has proved that the reasons causing the interruption of the extracting processes mainly come from the inner of coal face. Hence, after the installation of the MINOS system in England, the delays of belt conveyor sub-system were reduced. But the production increment was not as much as expected.

Accurate modeling of the semivariogram is an extremely important step in the geostatistical analysis of mineral deposits. Automatic fitting of a mathematical model is often possible but not necessarily desirable. Significant geologic and statistical information must be taken into account in the fitting process, which is not always available to the computer. Manual fitting of the model is, on the other hand, extremely time consuming. Interactive graphics are best suited to optimize the process. A number of interactive methods are described, which are adapted to the modeling of semivariograms in one-, two-, or three-dimensional environments.

Introduction Gravity concentration may be defined as that process where particles of mixed sizes, shapes, and specific gravities are separated from each other by the force of gravity or by centrifugal force. The nature of the process is such that size and shape classification are an inherent part of the process in addition to separation on the basis of specific gravity from whence the process got its name. Mother nature has long practiced this form of mineral concentration by concentrating such heavy and relatively indestructible minerals as gold, platinum, cassiterite, ilmenite, zircon, and diamonds in placer or beach sand deposits. Once freed of their host granitic or other rock through natural weathering processes, these minerals are then subjected to stream or wave action producing a natural classification and concentration of the heavy minerals. Gravity concentration dates back to antiquity and was certainly the first ore concentration process used when selective mining and hand sorting would no longer suffice to produce the quality of concentrate desired. Forerunners of the present day sluice box and panning techniques were undoubtedly used by the ancient Egyptians on the upper Nile to separate gold from stream gravel. By the second century BC the extraction of gold from veins in quartz was well detailed by Agatharchides, but there is evidence that gold was brought into Egypt from the south as early as the XI1 Dynasty (~1900 BC).1 Most assuredly gravity concentration devices were used during the later Bronze Age to separate the heavier tin and copper minerals from their lighter gangue minerals. The Athenians used an elementary form of Rowing film concentration at their lead-silver mines at Laurium,2 and elementary jigging using wicker baskets was also probably developed at this time. Agricola's famous treatise De Re Metallica3 demonstrates that by the 16th century gravity concentration technology was well advanced and a large number of devices had been developed. Chinese

The Jones Hill prospect is a Proterozoic age, volcanogenic, semi-massive to massive sulfide deposit. The deposit is located on the western edge of the Pecos greenstone belt in the southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northern New Mexico. The prospect is found in a block (West Block) of meta- igneous rocks, primarily diabase, metavolcanic rocks, and metasedimentary rocks (fig. 1). This assemblage is typical of lithologies found in the greenstone belt. Metamorphic grade is greenschist to lower amphibolite. The West Block is bound- ed on the west by Proterozoic age (1.7-1.4 b.y. by Rb/Sr), granitic plutons collectively called the Embudo granite, and on the east by Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, primarily sandstones, shales, and limestones of Mississippian and Pennsylvanian age. The mineralization occurs in a single horizon which has been overturned and cut into two blocks by a high-angle reverse fault (fig. 2). The mineralized horizon is found at the contact of felsic metavolcanic and rnetavolcaniclastic rocks with overlying intermediate metasedimentary rocks. The local stratigraphic sec- tion from bottom to top is as follows: 1) porphyroblastic quartz- sericite schist (originally a rhyolitic, subvolcanic intrusive); 2) quartz-sericite-chlorite-biotite schist (felsic metavolcanic and metavolcaniclastic rocks); 3) chlorite-talc-biotite-sulfide schist (altered felsic metavolcanic rocks); 4) carbonate-quartz-sulfide [ ] chlorite-tremolite-talc schist (mineralized exhalite); 5) quartz- chlorite schist (silicified tuff); and 6) amphibole-chlorite-feldspar- biotite schist (occasional mafic to intermediate metavolcanic flows).

"In the present work, we investigate the effects of roasting temperature and time on the transformation of the titanium (Ti)-bearing phase and magnesium aluminate spinel (MgAl2O4) phase in Ti-bearing electric arc furnace molten slag during the molten sodium hydroxide (NaOH) treatment process. With applied temperature of 700 °C for 60 min, and a mass ratio of Ti-bearing electric arc furnace slag to NaOH, or Rslag/NaOH, of 1:1.2, the conversion ratios of the Ti-bearing phase and the MgAl2O4 phase reached about 98.3 percent and 88.1 percent, respectively. Moreover, investigation of the reaction kinetics indicate that the conversion of these phases during the molten NaOH treatment process is a typical solid-liquid reaction, and it can be theoretically described by the unreacted shrinking core model. The conversion ratio of the Ti-bearing phase was found to be controlled by the chemical reaction step, with an apparent activation energy of 41.76 kJ/mol. The decomposition of the MgAl2O4 phase was found to be controlled by the surface chemical reaction in the early stage of 0 to 20 min from start of reaction, changing to diffusion control in the later stage of 20 to 60 min. The apparent activation energies of the process were determined as 55.88 and 22.72 kJ/mol, respectively.IntroductionChina has rich mineral resources of vanadium–titanium magnetite ore deposits, and the iron and steel industry in the country produces millions of tons of titanium (Ti)-bearing slag every year. The problem of how to dispose of the Ti-bearing slag has attracted much attention, and various approaches have been developed, including the acid process (Li et al., 2007; Zhang et al., 2011; Zhang and Nicol, 2010; Li et al., 2011), alkali fusion process (Han et al., 2012; Middlemas, Fang and Fan, 2013; Nayl, Awwad and Aly, 2009; Lasheen, 2008; Zhang, Qi and Zhang, 2009), carbonization and chlorination process (Liu et al., 2008; Tao et al., 2012; Fu et al., 2012; Liu, 2009), selective crystallization process (Lei and Xue, 2008; Li et al., 2011; Zhang et al., 2007a, 2007b). However, these processes have been beset by various functional, economical and ecological problems (Yu and Chen, 2010). With environmental protection regulations becoming increasingly rigorous, and demand growing for the comprehensive utilization of resources, the focus is on methods to treat Ti-bearing slag with high efficiency and mild reaction conditions (Nazari and Riahi, 2011; Wu et al., 2013)."

The Department of Thoracic Surgery and Pathology at the Toronto General Hospital have had a long standing interest in the early detection and treatment of carcinoma of the lung. Our initial experience was with a population at risk due to a prolonged period of cigarette smoking. More recently our efforts have turned to industrial exposure, specifically in the nickel and uranium industries. [Initial Screening Project] (1) For a three year period 1963 to 1966 a cytology screening program was carried out through the Out-Patient Department. The study was limited to cigarette smokers over 40 in age. A total of 1586 patients were examined. Of the sputa collected, the classification is seen in Table 1. There were 11 malignant sputa present. Added to this number were 25 patients with symptoms, normal chest X-rays, but malignant cells on cytology, and a further 5 patients in whom an abnormality (eventually proven non-malignant) showed on X-ray, and sputum showed malignancy which was radio logically occult. (Table II). This gave a total of 41 patients with malignant sputum who were evaluated between 1960 and 1966. The clinical course of these patients is seen in Table III. Only 19 of 41 patients had localization and treatment of their tumour during that study period and this low rate of localization attests to the technical difficulties endoscopy in that day presented. The method of localization was as follows: a) 6 patients showed an area of segmental pneumonitis somewhere in this time period b) Using the rigid bronchoscope localized the tumour in 9. This was proven by direct biopsy, and frequently required more than one bronchoscopy over a prolonged time period. c) bronchograms and tomograms showed abnormalities in 5 patients. Of these 19 patients, 5 were treated by radiotherapy because of general condition or refusal of surgery. Three of the irradiated patients died of recurrent cancer within three years. The other two died within one year of unrelated disease. Fourteen patients underwent resection, with one operative mortality. At pathology, the tumours were "in situ" in 6 and invasive in 13. There was no evidence of nodal spread. When last followed up in 1979, there were no cases of recurrent tumour and no cases of second lung primary tumours. Similar experiences have been reported from the Mayo Clinic (2), Johns Hopkins (3) and Memorial Hospitals (4). Early detection of radiologically occult tumours which are in situ or minimally invasive has given uniformly good results. There have been no deaths from recurrent or metastatic cancer in surgically resected patients, and only one second primary tumour has been detected. Interestingly, the Hopkins group reports that 5 patients with Stage I squamous cell tumours refused operation. One refused any treatment and died of disease at 12 months. Three were radiated, and were alive from 14-38 months post-treatment, all with evidence of recurrent disease. [Sudbury Sintering Plant Study](5) From 1948 to 1963 an open travelling-grate sintering process was employed to convert nickel sulfide to nickel oxide at an International Nickel Company operation. The environment in this plant was particularly dusty and filled with fumes. It became apparent by 1969 that the incidence of bronchogenic carcinoma was markedly increased in workers from this plant. A concerted effort was made to track down all workmen with this exposure. During 1973 and 1974, 268 men were studied. Chest radiographs were done and showed no mass lesions. Sputum was collected on three consecutive days and analyzed. There were 12 men with malignant sputum, all of the squamous cell variety. Two refused any investigation, one presenting 31/2 years later with extensive hronchogenic carcinoma, and the other 5 years later with extensive carcinoma of the maxillary sinus. In the remaining ten patients careful rhinolaryngeal examination as well as a detailed bronchoscopy, involving examination, brushings and biopsy of all pulmonary segments was carried out. One patient was found to have laryngeal carcinoma and was treated by radiation. In nine patients, the malignancy was localized to the lung, leading to six lobectomies, two pneumonectomies and one sleeve lobectomy at operation. However, the follow-up in these cases suggests a different biological behaviour with these industrially related tumours. While no tumour has recurred locally, one patient has died of metastatic cancer and two patients have developed second and one patient a third pulmonary primary cancer. However, survival has still been much better than wits radiographically manifest lung cancer. In 1990, the Chino Smelter completed the construction of a plant designed to recover metal values and water from smelter scrubber effluent. Equipment was installed to maximize effluent recycling and minimize costs. The process utilizes magnesium hydroxide as a neutralizing agent which has the advantage of precipitating copper from solution with minimum generation of solid reaction products. The neutralized stream is clarified, with solids recycled to the smelter for metal recovery while the clarified effluent is recycled to the concentrator for use as process water.

Ground calcium carbonate (GCC) is used in the paper, plastics, paint, rubber and caulks and sealants industries. The favorable properties of GCC include high whiteness and brightness, low hardness and outstanding rheology in water systems. The quality of calcitic GCC ores, which includes chalk, limestone and marble, is dependent on calcite purity and the nature and quantity of the impurity minerals. Wet and dry grinding are used in the processing of GCC. Ore processed by optical sorting, flotation and/or particle-size classification has higher brightness and lower abrasion characteristics. GCC markets are a function of the product's properties, purity and cost.

A low-temperature-chlorination selective oxidation followed by aqueous chloride leaching and SX-EW for producing electrolytic copper, elemental sulfur and ferric oxide was investigated for hydrometallurgical processing of a chalcopyrite concentrate. In this article, the selective oxidation phase of the process is described. The selective oxidation requires a temperature well above the CuCl-FeCl3 eutectic points. The test procedure was developed with a batch reactor and then tested with a continuous reactor. The process was initiated by adding small amounts of chlorinated samples to a fluidizing bed of dead-roasted sulfide concentrate micropellets. The selectively oxidized samples thus prepared were shown to fully dissolve copper, while virtually all the iron remained undissolved.

Heavy metals contamination is an environmental problem at Army installations engaged in firearms training and munitions production. At these facilities, weathering and corrosion of expended munitions and leaching from wastewater lagoons, landfills and burn pits have resulted in heavy metals contamination of the soil. The principal metals encountered in firing-range soils are lead, copper and zinc. Cadmium and other metals, such as antimony, that are often incorporated in the munitions are sometimes seen in lesser concentrations. Mercury is associated with various propellants and, while present in much smaller concentrations, is of concern because of its acute toxicity. Chromium is primarily associated with plating operations. The transport of metals into groundwater has been confirmed at some locations, which has required treatment of the soil and groundwater at these sites. Certain treatment processes for contaminated soil produce metals-laden extracts, which also require treatment before reuse or disposal. Ion exchange is generally quite effective for removing metals from aqueous streams. However, resins are expensive and must be regenerated, and activated carbon is generally less effective for most metals and also requires regeneration. Therefore, alternative effective and economic sorbents are needed. Twelve sorbents were screened in initial batch testing. These included activated carbon, bark, chitosan, crown ether, corn cob, xanthate, clay (kaolinite and montmorillonite), peat moss, seaweed and reagent-grade zeolite (aluminosilicate, Sigma Product No. Z3125). Of these, zeolite demonstrated the highest capacity for Pb, Cr and Cd. For this reason, zeolite was selected for further testing in batch, kinetic and column studies. Materials and methods Zeolite. The zeolite used in the second-phase batch and column studies was obtained from a natural deposit of clinoptilolite-rich rock located in South Dakota (Rocky Ford SDH) (Desborough, 1996). Large blocks of the material were crushed and sieved into the following three particle size ranges: 0.5 to 1.0, 1.0 to 4.0 and 2.0 to 4.7 mm. This material demonstrates high structural stability in acidic solutions (pH 2.5) (Desborough 1996) and has a measured surface area of 30 m2/g. The measured total cation-exchange capacity (TCEC) was approximately 10 meq/100 g. This is well below what has been indicated for commercially available zeolite, which has been reported to be about 180 to 220 meq/ 100 g. The TCEC test was repeated (Method 9081, SW 846) using sodium acetate. The test resulted in a TCEC of 54.5 meq/100 g. The difference between values obtained for this material and published values for zeolites may be attributable to the greater heterogeneity in the material used in this study, compared to commercially available materials, or to the effect of the relatively large particle sizes utilized. Batch studies. Seven batch studies were conducted using synthetic metal solutions and soil extracts (Table 1). Extract composition: The P-extract was prepared by sequential surfactant extraction of organics from a burnpit soil followed by acid extraction of metals. The pH of this solution is approximately 1.1. A number of metals and organic compounds were present in the soil. Analysis of the extract was restricted to Pb, Zn and Cu concentrations for this study. The FBH extract was produced from a firing-range soil that was oxidized with a 0.01 M CaO solution and then extracted with 0.1 M acetic acid. This was filtered through 0.5-µm Whatman No. 5 filter paper and stored at room temperature. The pH of the FBH extract was approximately 4.5. pH Control: Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) may be present in the zeolite horizon or bed. Calcium ion (Ca") is released from the exchange sites when in contact with solutions containing ions for which it is more selective, such as lead. This results in a rise in solution pH over time. Acid washing removes most of the carbonates, eliminating the need for a buffer. Batch studies were conducted using both acid-washed zeolite (AW) and unwashed zeolite (UW) for performance comparison. The UW zeolite was rinsed with distilled deionized (DDI) water to remove fine soil particles. Both materials were dried at 105°C (220°F) overnight, so that the dry mass could be determined. Most pyrometallurgical processes take place at high temperature with rapid chemical reactions when the elements and compounds are usually liquid or gaseous. Smelting. The classical method of obtaining a metal from its ore or concentrate is to smelt it in a furnace. The initial letter "s" of this word implies that, in addition to the physical process of melting, a chemical change also occurs. This is usually the reduction of metal oxide to metal by carbon or through a series of processes involving oxidation and reduction. Since solid-solid contact would not be sufficient to give a high rate of reaction, most smelting reactions occur by medium of two reactions involving solid-gaseous contact: where M represents a metal. The commonly preferred unit for carrying out these reactions is the blast furnace,1 which is a vertical shaft of refractory brick or water-cooled steel in which lumps of metal oxide and coke are fed at the top, and an air-blast is injected through tuyeres (water-cooled pipes) in the bottom. Three major suites of igneous rocks were erupted in the Great Basin in middle and late Cenozoic time. The first, most likely, resulted from sub- duction of a Pacific plate (Farallon plate) beneath the North American plate, resulting in eruption of andesitic rocks in the northern Great Basin between 42 and 43 m.y. ago. Between 34 and 17 m.y. ago, igneous activity migrated to the southwest, largely as eruption of volumincus rhyolite-quartz latite ash-flow sheets, ending about 17 a.y. ago with the onset of crustal extension and north-south-trending Basin and Range (rift) faulting. The second volcanic suite erupted between 17 and 8 m.y. ago in the northern Great Basin; is mostly basaltic or bimodal basalt-rhyolite. The third volcanic suite consists of andesitic and rhyolitic lavas and some basalt erupted between about 22 to 6 m.y. ago in the western Great Basin along the northwest-trending Walker Lane fault zone. Hydrothermal ore deposits are associated with all suites of igneous rocks, but the largest production has come from mines associated with andesitic rocks of the third (western Great Basin) suite. The oldest (34 to 42 m.y.) andesitic rocks (first suite) of the northern Great Basin have produced some large deposits; slightly younger silicic rocks of this suite are mostly barren. Many small ore deposits are associated with the 17- to 8-m.y.-old basalts (second suite) of northern Nevada.

To date, large-scale solution mining has received little attention in Australia, although the potential of this technique has not gone unnoticed. The possibility of long-term damage to the local environment has also been recognized. Because no two orebodies are the same, it is clear that the application of solution mining techniques and the assessment of environ- mental damage will be somewhat different for different orebodies, even though the general principles will be the same. At present the most significant copper solution mining operation in Australia is at the Mammoth (Gun- powder) Mine in northern Queensland. This mine currently produces more than 3 000 t of cement copper a year.1

INTRODUCTION At present, the capability of production planning software based on Linear Programming (LP) is still limited to the optimization of the single LP-run. This is due to the LP-model itself which cannot consider the interdependencies between individual LP- runs. With regard to planning of selective mining this limited way of optimization frequently leads to situations, where the remaining and accessible ore blocks do no longer allow to produce ROM-ore in the qualitative composition required by the ore processing plant. However, many of the aspects taken into consideration when setting up production plans built from mutually dependent LP-runs cannot be modelled in a system of linear equations. They are thus unsuited for treatment with LP and have to be taken care of by the planning engineer without any assistance by the system. The KBS currently under development is intended to assist the planning engineer in designing a production plan under special consideration of the combination of consecutive LP-runs and blending beds. It is not necessarily intended to find the optimum solution within a given planning situation which is, anyway, hard to determine due to the multitude of influences. The objective is rather to work out a good and - from the practical point of view - feasible production plan. The new aspect with respect to mine planning is the integration of expert knowledge and experiences via the KBS into the planning process in order to support the planning engineer. The planning system is being developed in close cooperation with an iron-ore open pit mine. COMPONENTS OF THE PLANNING SYSTEM The software is being developed on a workstation under UNIX and comprises the components LP, CAD-module and the KBS. The applied multi-goal LP-algorithm is an in-house development of the Department of Mining Engineering at Technical University Berlin. It was already successfully implemented within other mine planning programmes and was only slightly adapted to the specific needs of the present system. Within individual LP- runs it finds the optimum qualitative composition of ore production in the sense of the selected optimizing criterion and under the given restrictions: i.e. it determines tonnages to be mined from blocks in order to optimally meet the requirements of the ore pro- cessing plant. A CAD-module based on the commercial SURPAC package in combination with a simulation device is used to graphically depict the block model and progress of mining. Both LP-algorithm and CAD-package are integrated in the KBS. It has been decided to use the shell NEXPERT OBJECT as it is a hybrid system which supports both rule-based and object-oriented knowledge representation. MINE-MODEL AND LP-MODEL KBS have to be tailor-made for specific planning problems. Therefore, it had to be decided which specifications of the iron-ore mine should be represented in the model. As the limited possibilities of a university institute do not allow to develop a KBS for mine planning which is ready to use in industry, it was decided to concentrate on those characteristics that can be regarded as typical for iron-ore surface mines and that seemed to be suited for treatment with knowledge-based techniques. The following chapter summarizes the most important features of the mine model. The description of the requirements to the mine's sales products is followed by an outline of the applied LP-model. Mine model • The model of the mine as it is used for planning consists of • the block model of the deposit, • the mobile equipment, • stockpiles and blending bed and • the requirements to the sales products. The deposit is described by a block model which contains data on the chemical composition, LOI, grain size and tonnages. Grain size was included as it is important for the two sales products of the mine. Furthermore, it is known whichs blocks require and which don't require blasting; this is relevant to the assignment of loading equipment to individual blocks. The blocks are devided in three categories: • ore, which will directly be taken to the blending bed; • waste, which will be put on the waste dump; and • blocks which will be either transported to the blending bed, to stockpiles or to the waste dump depending on the specific planning situation. This decision is made during planning. Neighboring blocks are combined in mining areas to which the loading equipment is individually assigned. Mobile equipment comprises shovels and wheel-loaders as well as trucks. The characteristics of the loading equipment are important for their ability to load different blocks and for the permissible degree of their re-positioning etc. The mine disposes of a blending bed for homogenization of the production, of a waste dump, and of several stockpiles with different ore qualities. The requirement to make only limited use of the stockpiles for economic reasons is included in the KBS. According to long term planning two commercial products have to be produced, which differ both in grain size and qualitative composition (TABLE 1). Their mass-proportions in the blending bed have to be within a fixed range. Not considered in long term planning is the occasional need for lump ore, which occurs at very short notice and has to be produced in a "campaign-like" manner. Limestone for portland cement must be beneficiated to produce uniform raw material for the kiln. Careful quarrying and selective recovery are factors in this process, but the chief aspects of beneficiation are "in plant" processes, such as crushing and screening, washing, grinding, flotation, and heavy-media separation. Numerous technical and economic problems exist. Detailed studies of the limestone deposit and the stone itself are required for intelligent beneficiation. As used in this paper, beneficiation is defined as the improving of limestone composition so as to produce an economically usable raw material A limestone deposit is defined as a mass of limestone which can be recovered, by quarrying or mining, for sale or for use in a commercially profitable operation. The stone may require elaborate processing, or it may qualify with little or none. Obviously, the "commercially profitable" qualification may change as the economy changes. Potentially commercial deposits may be of much better quality than actually developed deposits, and yet may be denied development for various economic reasons.

Many public domain programs useful in mining engineering, e.g., MULSIM, DZTAB, and EXPAREA, require tedious data input and generate pages and pages of printed output. To eliminate the tedium and to enhance the output, ETI U.S., Inc. developed GEM, Graphics for Engineering and Mining, a collection of application programs and underlying interface tools for VAX/VMS computers. This paper presents an example of how an application program in GEM enhances a specific public domain program. It describes how GEM provides automated graphics assisted input and output. The paper describes how this program uses the GEM User Interface: the 3D GKS device independent graphics, server and drivers, various mining, mathematical and statistical algorithms, the means of handling graphics, data including IGES, and the foreign language interface.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the geology and the modelling work carried out to date. The Lisheen Zinc-Lead deposit was discovered in April, 1990. The deposit comprises two stratiform sulphide orebodies, hosted within the Lower Carboniferous Waulsortian limestone formation. The fully diluted geological resource is 22.5 Mt @ 13.02% Zn and 2.19% Pb, based on a total of 548 diamond drill-boles and 10,998 sampled core intersections. Due to the absence of a geological marker it was necessary to apply economic criteria to define and model the resource envelope. In common with other drill-hole geological databases, the establishment of a workable geological model presents unique challenges.

The determination of aqueous cyanide is accomplished by either detection in the sample as collected or by removal of the cyanide of the collected sample, followed by detection. The direct determination of the cyanide content of a solution can only be used in the simplest of systems, since many interferences can result in errors. Thus the most widely used method for total cyanide determination involve the reflux distillation of the sample using heat, acid and vacuum or air flow. The basic theory underlying this analytical approach is that by reducing the pH, the quality of molecular hydrogen cyanide will be in- creased and can be removed from the solution by elevating the temperature. The hydrogen cyanide is then collected in a caustic solution and analyzed. The general approach of removing the cyanide from the sample by distillation represented a major advance in this area of analytical chemistry. It enabled the determination of cyanide in many additional types of samples. When it became apparent that the tightly bonded cyanide complexes were not being detected by this approach, many methods fox complex ion destruction were proposed. These methods usually involved low pH adjustment with oxidizing mineral acids, coupled with the catalytic decomposition of the tightly hound complexes. All off the complexes except the strongest could he broken by these methods. The catalytic reflux distillation step has been found to have some negative aspects, since many materials that can be distilled with hydrogen cyanide will interfere with the color development step and result in a false positive reading.

The present interest in beryllium seems to be the result of recent developments in the uses for the metal discovery of significant deposits of disseminated beryllium ores, and the development of chemical and physical processing techniques, for recovering the beryllium values contained in these ores. At the present time most of the new and potential uses for beryllium are in the research stage of development and are not consuming large quantities of the metal. However, they do point to an expanding market. Interesting new discoveries or extensions of previously known deposits have been reported during the past year from the Boomer Mine in Colorado, the Mesquite area of Nevada,, the Chemalloy pegmatites in Canada, the Brazilian and African pegmatite districts and from other areas, However, this paper will discuss only four of the beryllium deposits, which appear to be of special significance due to their; large reserves of ore and promise economic development. The new chemical and physical processing techniques are not discussed in detail, but it should be stressed that the development of an economical process to handle the pegmatitic and low-grade non-pegmatitic beryllium ores is of great importance to the development of the beryllium industry. Scientists in both government and industry are co-operating in this effort and it is expected that commercial processes will be developed in the near future.
