Based on extensive investigations on the effect of design variables on process performance from 1982-85, Nordberg developed a 746 kW (1000 hp) cone crusher with the objective of boosting crushing productivity in existing plants. The MP1000 fits on the same foundation as the 2 m (7 ft) SHD Symons cone but is designed to give two times the capacity of the 2 m (7ft) The economies of scale involved give the customer substantial cost savings. In this paper, process performance of the Nordberg MP1000 relative to the 2 m (7 ft)SHD Symons cone while crushing the same ore, will be presented. Also, implications of such a crusher scale-up to associated cost savings will be addressed.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed laboratory testing to examine and improve airborne dust capture and methane removal performance of flooded-bed scrubbers on continuous mining machines using a blowing face ventilation configuration to reduce respirable dust exposure to shuttle car operators. Several testing conditions were examined to minimize shuttle car operator dust exposure without adversely affecting continuous miner performance and production. Curtain-to-face setback distance of 9.1 m versus 15.2 m (30 ft versus 50 ft), face ventilation airflow of 226.5 m3/min versus 339.8 m3/min (8,000 ft3/min versus 12,000 ft3/min), and the use of side-body-mounted blocking sprays (on versus off) were the three primary parameters compared. Scrubber airflow was set and maintained at 198.2 m3/min (7,000 ft3/min) throughout testing. An examination of slab cuts versus box cuts and the location of the shuttle car (present behind the continuous miner versus not present in the entry) was also performed to demonstrate the effects of these constantly changing scenarios on scrubber performance. Results show that the best blowing face ventilation setup for minimizing shuttle car operator dust exposure for the tested parameters uses a 15.2-m (50-ft) curtain-to-face setback with 339.8 m3/min (12,000 ft3/min) face ventilation while operating the side-body-mounted blocking sprays. INTRODUCTION Coal mine worker overexposure to respirable coal dust continues to be a problem in U.S. underground coal mining operations, potentially leading to coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (black lung). The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires that respirable dust exposure to coal mine workers does not exceed a 1.5 mg/m3 average over the actual working shift (79 Fed. Reg. 24814 (2014)). Although using a blowing face ventilation configuration on continuous miner (CM) sections is beneficial for removing methane emissions from the mining face, it can be detrimental for dust control for shuttle car (or ram car) operators and any other workers on the return ventilation side of the CM when compared to exhausting ventilation. Even with machine-mounted scrubbers on CMs, shuttle car operators still have some of the higher dust exposures with blowing face ventilation systems (NIOSH 2011, Beck et al. 2015). Although scrubber discharge air is not completely clean, dust being blown around the scrubber inlet and therefore not being captured by the scrubber can further increase these dust exposures (Goodman 2000). Dust control problems are also caused by inadequate face ventilation quantities causing scrubber face airflow recirculation issues (Schultz et al. 2010). In order to minimize respirable dust exposures on blowing face ventilation sections, ventilation, water spray, and scrubber parameters were experimentally examined to improve operating ranges for both dust and gas control. Several blowing face ventilation factors were examined with respect to CM spray systems and scrubber operation. Curtain-to-face setback distance and side-body-mounted blocking sprays were previously examined in the laboratory for dust control on a full-scale CM model using a scrubber on a blowing face ventilation system (Goodman 2000). The blocking sprays produced larger dust reductions at the CM’s rear corners and return for a 6.1-m (20-ft) curtain setback distance as compared to a 12.2-m (40-ft) curtain setback distance with equal face and scrubber airflows of 169.9 m3/min (6,000 ft3/min). Because face ventilation airflow quantities, shuttle car operator locations, and tracer gas concentration gradients were not previously examined during these experiments, additional research was required to determine improved operating parameters for blowing face ventilation systems.

The topography reconstructed following land disturbance is the foundation for all other reclamation practices. As the manufactured drainage basins, hillslopes, and stream channels approach a steady-state condition, the amount of adjustment of these landforms by geomorphic processes following reclamation decreases. As the adjustment required to establish a steady-state condition decreases, the prospect of reclamation success increases while the prospect of site maintenance decreases. Careful topographic reconstruction is a good investment.

This paper traces the history of mica mining in Alabama from 1870-1970. The decline of sheet mica production is noted and emphasis is placed on the more recent activity of scrap mica production and the development of the U. S. Gypsum Co. mica properties in Randolph County, Prospecting for weathered pegmatites of sufficient size to warrant development is a continuing challenge since most deposits are too small and all exhibit varying characteristics as to size, shape, and weathering. Quantity and quality of muscovite mica in the pegmatites is of utmost importance and its recovery during processing of the ore is described.

The Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago (MSDGC) serves an area of approximately 860 square miles and collects and processes used water from the city of Chicago and 116 surrounding communities. As a public agency, the MSDGC -Serves a population equivalent to 10 million people which is composed of 5.5 million people and an industrial wasteload equivalent to an additional 4-1/2 million people. -Provides 400 miles of intercepting sewers and tunnels ranging in diameter from 12 inches to 24 feet. -Operates 71 miles of navigable waterways and channels conncecting the Atlantic Ocean and the Great Lakes with the Gulf of Mexico and 6,000 miles of inland waterways. -Maintains the largest water reclamation plant in the world. -Processes 1,380,000,000 of used water daily and removes approximately 1,000 dry tons of organic solids each day. -Has spent approximately 700 million dollars in capital improvements to date, and will require expenditures in excess of 3 billion dollars (including over one-half billion dollars in tunnels) to meet existing federal and state water quality standards.

AMAX's Sleeper Mine uses conventional cyanidation milling and heap leaching techniques to produce gold. Since milling operations commenced in March 1986, average ore processing rates have improved from the design rate of 455 tonnes per day to more than 720 tonnes per day. Heap leaching was added to the process facilities in September 1986 at a design rate of 1,500 tonnes per day, and current heap leaching rates exceed 2,680 tonnes per day. Presented are descriptions of the Sleeper processing facilities with emphasis on the crushing and grinding circuits, a review of the selection of crushing and grinding equipment, and a summary of operating performance during the first 16 months of operations.

Model enhanced Expert control has been implemented at the Newmont Lone Tree mill grinding plant as well as rule based Expert control for flotation and thickening circuits. The project has been successful in producing benefits but more importantly has contributed to an ongoing effort for continuous process improvement. This paper discusses how the control at Lone Tree has evolved and the part that Expert control has played in the overall improvements made. Specific examples of how the advanced control has integrated with instrumentation and stabilizing control are given and illustrations of how it has been effective in defining limitations and bottlenecks in the process or process control areas are provided.

"Float coal dust is produced by various mining methods, carried by ventilating air and deposited on the floor, roof, and ribs of mine airways. If deposited float dust is re-entrained during a methane explosion, without sufficient inert rock dust quantities, this float coal dust can propagate an explosion throughout mining entries. Consequently, controlling float coal dust is of critical interest to mining operations. Rock dusting—adding inert material to airway surfaces—is the main control technique currently utilized by the coal mining industry to reduce the float coal dust explosion hazard. To assist the industry in reducing this hazard, NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) initiated a project to investigate methods and technologies to reduce float coal dust in underground coal mines through prevention, capture, and suppression prior to deposition. Field characterization studies were performed to determine quantitatively the sources, types, and amounts of dust produced during various coal mining processes. The operations chosen for study were a continuous miner section, a longwall section, and a coal handling facility. For each of these operations, the primary dust sources were confirmed to be the continuous mining machine, longwall shearer, and conveyor belt transfer points, respectively. Respirable and total airborne float dust samples were collected and analyzed for each operation and the ratio of total airborne float coal dust to respirable dust was calculated. During the continuous mining process, the ratio of total airborne float coal dust to respirable dust ranged from 10.3 to 13.8. The ratios measured on the longwall face were between 18.5 and 21.5. The total airborne float coal dust to respirable dust ratio observed during belt transport ranged between 7.5 and 21.8. INTRODUCTION During the extraction of coal, various dusts are produced that can be classified into two categories of interest: respirable and float coal dust. Respirable dust (diameter 10.0 = µm) has the capability to penetrate beyond the terminal bronchioles and become deeply embedded into the human lungs, leading towards respiratory disease complications (Potts et al., 1990). Float coal dust is defined as coal dust having a diameter less than 74 µm (Harris et al., 2009). During the mining process, float coal dust can be deposited on the floor, roof, and ribs of mine airways. With the proper mixture of methane gas (between 5% and 15%) and an ignition source, a methane gas explosion can occur (Barker and Humphreys, 1996). The resulting explosion can develop a pressure wave which lifts the deposited float coal dust material into the air, propagating a disastrous coal mine explosion (Harris et al., 2010). The current technique to safeguard against the propagation of a coal mine explosion is to treat the mine airways with incombustible rock dust (typically limestone), maintaining an 80% total incombustible content of the deposited material. NIOSH initiated a project to investigate control technologies that could be aimed at reducing the amount of float coal dust allowed to deposit in the mine airways using three approaches: prevention, capture, and suppression prior to deposition. Reducing the float coal dust being generated during the mining processes and capturing or suppressing airborne float coal dust prior to deposition would in turn increase the efficiency of the applied rock dust used to prevent mine explosions."

Major gaps in understanding hydro- thermal systems remain after a century of studying fossil ore deposits and active geothermal areas. The periodically rejuvenated concept of "stacking" ore deposit types has never been verified by a continuous sample. Basal and marginal regions of both “fossil" and "active" hydrothermal systems normally lie beyond the limits of economic exploration, remaining inadequately exposed. Incomplete scientific under- standing of he vertical transitions clearly limits the efficacy of exploration programs for hydrothermal ores of all types. The Continental Scientific Drilling Committee's (CSDC) Panel on Mineral Resources has defined dedicated research objectives and add-on experiments to industry or government drill holes of opportunity.

EIMCO Process Equipment Company has introduced the new SmartCell series of conventional flotation cells. The flagship of this new development is the 5000 ft3 cell that is the largest available in industry. This new series of cells includes a cylindrical tank design, a conical draft tube and froth crowder. Optional air control, wash water addition and embedded expert control are available. Of the 15 million tons of glass discarded in municipal wastes annually, about 2 million tons pass through incinerators and can be recovered by ore processing techniques. Although the primary use for this recovered waste glass would be as cullet in the manufacture of new glass containers, this approach is not always practical because of long shipping distances, high freight costs, and high purity requirements. Alternatives to the use of waste glass as cullet would be either as landfill or in secondary products. Although glass is considered a good landfill material, it is still wasteful of potentially valuable raw materials. Secondary products that can be made from waste glass1 include a variety of industrial and construction items. As part of the Bureau of Mines' program in secondary materials recovery, the Tuscaloosa Metallurgy Research Laboratory has conducted research concerned with the development of ceramic building products from waste glass. Materials employed in this research were obtained from municipal incinerator residues fractionated in the Bureau's continuous residue processing plant, College Park Metallurgy Research center.' The studies reported herein3,4 present research results using waste glass in the formulation and production of clay bricks, not only to produce improved products, but to reduce production costs, conserve natural raw materials, and most important, to reduce manufacturing energy requirements.

Two years ago, about the only US mining ventures that could turn even marginal profits were precious metals. In 1986, the price of gold dramatically increased, as did earnings from precious metals, mostly gold mines. First quarter results for 1987 show that gold will again be the most profitable type of mining in the US. All this money being made in gold resulted in many new mines being opened and hundreds of old workings being re-evaluated. The Society of Mining Engineers has put together a technical program to aid in developing precious metals mines. Problems facing the small miner The small miner has found and started most of the productive mines in the world, says Alfred G. Hoyl, of Coal Fuels Corp., Rollinsville, CO. Hoyl will state his case for small mines development in the opening session of the program. He will make the point that government regulations must never restrict the small mine or miner. And the mining industry must be careful not to crowd out the independent miner. "To restrict small mining is to say to our young men and women entering the mineral industry `There is no place for you as an independent.' Small is a relative term and we must never feel that starting small will restrict our possibilities of becoming big." In the same session, David J. Starbuck, Starbuck Minerals Management, Mayer, AZ will take a look at why smaller precious metals mines are profitable. Mining companies have changed their perspective on reworking previously mined properties. They are looking at abandoned properties in older mining districts. The attitude is that smaller operations in these districts can be profitable with the present economic climate, more advanced technology, and better management. Small, independent mining companies may not have the same resources to draw from as the majors. But there are affordable technologies available that fit into the independents' budget. Betty Gibbs, of Gibbs Associates, Boulder, Co will explain how a personal computer can help a small operation to analyze data more effectively and respond quickly to changing conditions. Scenarios will be developed that will describe how PCs can be incorporated into all phases of an operation. Financial institutions are becoming more willing to consider venture capital for small precious metals mines, according to Stanley Dempsey, Denver Mining Finance Co., Denver, CO. This may be in the form of equity or debt, he says, but they want to receive assurances of the quality of the resource. And they will ask about the ore reserves. Next, the potential lender will want to know about the mining method and en¬vironmental regulations. Dempsey will discuss these requirements. Once a high grade gold mineralization is located and reserves proven, it must be evaluated to determine which recovery process is best suited for this deposit. Robert Martinez, Amselco Minerals, Ely, NV will evaluate processes for such a deposit located in Mexico. Heap leaching, vat leaching, and a carbon-in-pulp circuit are all viable options, he says. The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion Project (HRBT), initiated by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), will add two new 1.5-mile TBM bored tunnels to the two existing immersed-tube tunnels between artificial islands, part of the connection between Norfolk and Hampton under the Hampton Roads Harbor in Virginia, USA. The new bored tunnels will be built by Hampton Roads Connector Partners (HRCP), a joint venture of Dragados USA, Vinci Construction, Flatiron Constructors and Dodin Campenon Bernard. This paper covers technical discussions that led HRCP to select a Variable Density TBM to address the challenges of this tunnel project, including but not limited to (i) the diameter of the bore: a 46 feet (14.04 m) diameter machine that constitutes the second-largest TBM ever used in the United States; (ii) shallow ground-cover under the water table; (iii) challenging and varying geology along the alignment, with mixed-face conditions and different types of ground modification zones; and (iv) the high TBM operating pressures required—all these and other challenges in a sensitive marine environment.

Voluminous deposits of commercial-grade phosphate occur in sedimentary strata in a 350,000 km2 (135,000 mi2) area of the middle Rocky Mountains of North America known as the Western Phosphate Field. The Permian marine strata that host the phosphate were deposited on the western margin of the North American craton and subsequently deformed, first by folding and thrust faulting of the Laramide orogeny, and then by Cenozoic Basin and Range block faulting. Carbonate fluorapatite is the primary phosphorus-bearing mineral. Organic matter is abundant in some strata, and both biogenic and non-biogenic pyrite are also present. Certain strata are enriched in several trace elements, especially in arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo), selenium (Se), vanadium (V), uranium (U), and zinc (Zn). Phosphate has been mined from the Western Phosphate Field for nearly 100 years. Phosphate mining and processing constitutes the largest mineral industry of Idaho, producing more than $600 million in processed mineral value in 1997. Resource management agencies, phosphate producers, and others are concerned about the release of Se from phosphate mine wastes, especially at Maybe Canyon, and the potential effects that Se and other trace elements may have on the environment and on human health. U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Mineral Resources Team scientists initiated a multidisciplinary study of the Permian Phosphoria Formation and related rocks in the south- eastern Idaho sector of the Western Phosphate Field in response to a request by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Studies to date reveal that Se is present in several phases, including native Se, and in an as yet unidentified form, possibly an organo-Se compound. Selenium is also present in pyrite and sphalerite. Selenium concentrations range from 1.2 to greater than 1,000 parts per million (ppm) in samples collected from exposures of the Meade Peak Phosphatic Shale Member of the Phosphoria Formation (Meade Peake) at Enoch Valley. The results suggest that Se concentrations vary spatially across strata and with depth, perhaps comparable to spatial variations of phosphate and organic carbon concentrations throughout the Western Phosphate Field demonstrated in previous studies. Some Se-enriched strata may be of adequate dimension to allow selective extraction during mining. Such units could be handled separately from the main ore process or waste streams and isolated in order to reduce the potential for release of Se to the environment

Control is a vital management function by which operations are brought into compliance with predetermined standards to achieve the goals of an enterprise. Events that are characterized by a low degree of expectation, avoidability, and intent necessarily have a low degree of control. Such events are difficult not only to predict but to control as well. Fortunately, very few industrial situations fall into that category of events. It is an axiom of control technology that in order to control, one must first measure; further to measure, one must know the characteristics of the subject (or environment) upon which the measurement must be made. Finally, if measurements are to be made reliably, the influences that affect the measurement must be known and, if possible, understood. The complete control cycle therefore consists of the following: (1) defining the objective, (2) planning to achieve the objective, (3) putting the plan into practice with appropriate instructions, (4) measuring variables or parameters of interest, (5) transmitting and transforming the measurements to analyze the system's status and to predict the future outcome, (6) comparing these with the defined objective, and (7) determining and taking corrective actions to bring the actual results closer to the objective. The management principle underlying the control cycle is the principle of management by exception. The application of the principle and the frequency with which corrective actions are taken vary according to the purposes of the review and control. For example, the control of a machine operation (e.g., truck on a haul road) may require adjustments and therefore data, analysis, and decisions, in intervals of seconds whereas the review for ore-grade control may take several hours. Reviews, on the other hand, for cost control may be done in intervals of weeks or months. In any case, three specific purposes of the control cycle are: (1) to correct the operation so that it follows the accepted plan closely, (2) to evaluate the operation and predict future outcomes in light of changes in the environment or of more experience, and (3) to review the objectives and modify these to be reasonable and realistic.

Gold-copper ores have become important gold resources (von Michaelis, 1989), but the gold extraction from such materials posed a challenge due to the detrimental effect of copper species on gold cyanidation. Ammoniacal cyanidation process was rec­ommended (Muir et al., 1989) and practiced (Castello et al., 1992) for gold extraction from the gold ores which contain cop­per at moderate level mostly in form of oxide. This paper pro­vides an example to apply the ammoniacal cyanidation process to processing such a copper bearing gold ore.

Industrial minerals deposits present sampling and grade control problems not normally encountered in metal mining operations. No longer are industrial minerals simply crude ground mineral products but are in fact high purity chemical raw materials. Operators of industrial minerals mines and processing plants now must meet increasingly stringent specifications established by the consumer of the final products. Meeting these stringent specifications requires not only sophisticated processing techniques but equally important careful sampling and grade or quality control at the mine. A well-trained geological staff can assure an adequate supply of uniformily high quality feed to the processing plant. In the final analysis this results in significantly higher operating profits.

This presentation will compare actual work site results for the loading and transport of shot rock for two major tunneling projects in North America. "SCARMAR" (the Canadian subsidiary of S & M Construction) is operating a rail bound Hagglund continuous gathering arm loader in combination with a Hagglund nine car shuttletrain system at the West End of Table Mountain on the B.C. Railway project near Tumbler Ridge, Canada. Al Johnson Construction is operating a Hagglund rubber tired continuous gathering arm loader in combination with haul trucks at the Rocky Mountain Pump Storage Project near Rome, GA. This paper will compare: 1) tunnel and ground conditions, 2) the total work cycle as it relates to mucking and haulage 3) efficiencies and related problems with the two systems 4) mucking and haulage rates 5) operating costs, and 6) recommendations for future large tunnel excavations. On the Corramandel Peninsula of New Zealand, the Waihi Gold Mine has undergone a major redevelopment. The upgrade included the construction of two very large overland belt conveyors, both rated for a capacity of 6000tph. The first of these conveyors (CVR2) traverses a total of 1600m over undulating terrain, including a significant section running through tunnels. A large hill is climbed, just after the mid-section of the conveyor run, before dropping back down prior the discharge point. The second of these conveyors (CVR8) traverses 1100m along an alignment with a horizontal curve, a number of vertical curves and a significant lift before the discharge point. The CVR8 conveyor also included a shuttling head pulley arrangement. The mine they service is inside the town of Waihi. The conveyor alignment runs through the town and out to the metallurgical process site on the outskirts of the municipal area. This paper documents the engineering process that took place in the design of these conveyors. The Martha Hill mine in Waihi, New Zealand is unique. The mine is placed in the township. Consequently there are quite stringent environmental limitations on the mine's operation. In [Figure 1] the proximity of the mine to the town is shown. In the top-centre of the photograph the alignment of the existing smaller overland conveyor can be seen leading from the mine to a tunnel through the hill in the background.
