This paper describes the application of a cyclonic flotation column (CFC) for coal cleaning. A CFC makes use of centrifugal force to create a density gradient in a column to augment the froth flotation process. In a CFC, a series of angular helical inserts is attached to the wall of a conventional column, and coal slurry is mixed with a series of impellers attached to a central shaft. The hydrophobic froth concentrates near the center shaft and moves upward, while the relatively heavy hydrophilic particles concentrate near the wall and are guided downward by the helical inserts. The results of pyritic sulfur removal from an Upper Freeport coal during CFC flotation are discussed.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the leaching of phosphate values from Florida phosphatic clay wastes using sulfuric acid (H2SO4) as the leaching agent and methanol as the solvent. Acid-alcohol leaching studies were done using pure crystalline apatite to investigate potential causes for low extractions. It was found that a barrier layer formed on the surface of the apatite. Initial discovery of the barrier layer was made by analyzing pure apatite samples before and after leaching using an optical microscope. Subsequent Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) analyses proved the coating was calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CaSO4-1/2H2O) and that unreacted apatite existed beneath the coating. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) photographs depict the CaSO4-1/2H2O morphology as long slender crystals adhering to the apatite surface. It was also shown that grinding the leached tailings and leaching again in the H2SO4-methanol system resulted in additional phosphate extraction.

Industrial-mineral mining started early in the history of the State when salt was extensively mined for use in processing gold and silver ores, and borates were produced to meet most of the world's needs. After this start, industrial-mineral production grew slowly until World War II, mostly because of the remoteness of the State and the small population. Nevada now has a large and varied industrial-mineral industry. In 1983, 14 principal commodities were produced from 48 deposits; the total value of these materials was 168 million dollars. Nevada ranks first in domestic production of barite and magnesite; second in diatomite, gem stones, and lithium; third in fluorspar; and sixth in gypsum. Other materials produced are carbonate rocks, cement, clays, decorative and crushed stone, light- weight aggregate, perlite, pyritic soil additive, salt, sand and gravel, and silica. From 1978 through 1982 barite was the most important commodity; in 1983 diatomite surpassed barite in value of production. Most of the Nevada production consists of high-value commodities that are consumed out of the State. Approximately 430 significant deposits with 20 principal commodities are present in Nevada. This abundance can be attributed to the numerous and diverse geologic processes that have been operative. Seven major modes of origin have been identified: hydrothermal activity, sedimentation, combined hydrothermal activity-sedimentation, evaporative precipitation, brine formation, extrusion of igneous rocks, and alteration by ground water. The hydrothermal type accounted for 39 percent of the deposits, the combined hydrothermal-sedimentary type for 28 percent, and the sedimentary type for 13 percent. Nevada diatomite production is about 200,000 short tons/year valued at 30 million dollars. In 1984 three companies operated in Nevada producing diatomite from six open pits and processing it at four plants - one plant producing filter-grade materials and the others adsorbents and fillers. The diatomite occurs in about 60 areas, almost all in the western one-third of the State. The diatomites were deposited in long-lasting, fresh-water lakes in topographically closed valleys formed by basin-and-range faulting. About 85 percent of the barite mined in the United States is produced in Nevada. In 1981 the high point of production,-2.5 million short tons of bedded barite was produced from about 30 open-pit mines. About 120 significant bedded-barite deposits are known in Nevada; 38 of these have had past production of more than 25,000 short tons. The deposits are associated with marine siliceous rocks of Cambrian through Devonian age and occur in a zone about 300 miles long and 60 miles wide. Abundant evidence supports the theory that the bedded barite is of exhalative sedimentary origin.

A procedure was developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines for recovering gold, silver, cobalt, copper, and zinc from a massive sulfide ore by a hydro-metallurgical process. The procedure consists of (1) oxygen pressure leaching; (2) iron, arsenic, and copper removal from the leach solution by precipitation; (3) selective extraction of cobalt and zinc from solution; (4) electrodeposition of the cobalt and zinc from the strip liquor; and (5) cyanidation of the pressure leach residue to recover gold and silver. The results are discussed in terms of efficiency of metal recovery and conclusions drawn as to possible benefits and broad applications of the process.

The classification of selective mining units (SMU) and the assignment of grades to those classified SMU are very important in open pit mining, especially for precious metal mining. When the classification is done, the true values of the SMU grades are unknown. These unknown SMU grades are mostly estimated analyzing the geologic data and blast hole assays. To classify the SMU's based on the estimate of SMU grade, without considering uncertainty associated with unknown SMU grade, yields incorrect decision in sending material to appropriate destination. In this paper, a method is developed to classify SMU's considering the uncertainty associated with unknown SMU grades. By using this method, traditional estimate of SMU grade is replaced with conditional probability distribution of SMU grade. The decisions about the destination of a given SMU are performed by minimizing the loss due to misclassification. Also, the asymmetric loss function by penalizing the overestimation and the underestimation unequally is used in assigning grades to classified SMU's. A case study is carried out to apply the traditional ore control techniques and proposed method in classification of SMU's and the assignment of the grades in a hypothetical gold mine.

This could be a crucial technology for the mining industry to incorporate. This paper will recount the statement of tasks, the study process, and the science-based conclusions and recommendations reached.

Introduction Cross borehole seismic tomography (CBST) is a geophysical technique that allows definition of the distribution of some physical rock property between two boreholes. The method is similar to the computer-assisted tomography (CAT) scans used by the medical industry. This paper describes the method, its applications and the developing trends in its use that interest the mining industry. The idea of using tomography in connection with geophysical methods for measuring rock properties between boreholes has been around for three or four decades. Until the advent of high-speed, large-capacity computers, the necessary calculations were too formidable for production use. Another factor in the development of the technique has been the refinement of a mathematical base to meet the needs of the medical industry. The geophysical applications have benefited from this refinement. An extensive discussion of the basic theory is given in Kak and Slaney (1988). CBST, although widely researched and written about, is still not extensively put to use in mining and engineering projects. Most real world examples in the literature have come from research carried out by government laboratories or by large companies. An exception is the regular use by Prospection Geophysique Francaise (Cottin et al., 1986) in damsite investigations. The Japanese appear to be doing extensive research and testing of CBST's uses in civil engineering projects (Saito et al., 1988). Canada is researching the use of the method in connection with nuclear waste site investigations (Wong et al., 1987). Finland has tested the method in connection with a foundation investigation for a nuclear power plant (Cosma et al., 1984). In the US, the US Bureau of Mines has taken an interest in using CBST as a means to enhance in situ mining operations (Tweeton, 1988). Major oil companies are examining the method as a tool in oil field development (Justice et al., 1989). Description of the method CBST involves placing a series of receivers down one borehole and recording transmissions from an energy source placed successively at a series of positions in another hole. The objective is to generate a dense network of seismic raypaths between the holes. The denser the network of raypaths, the better the features between the boreholes are resolved. Either seismic travel times or sine wave amplitudes are measured by the receivers. Analysis of travel times between boreholes develops a picture of rock velocities between the holes. Analysis of seismic wave amplitudes develops a picture of the distribution of energy transmission characteristics between the holes. These seismic properties can be used to define occurrences of fracture zones, lenticular sequences or other important geologic data not apparent from examination of the borehole logs. When longitudinal (compressional) and transverse (shear) waves are analyzed, the physical properties, such as elastic moduli, can also be mapped. When wave amplitudes are measured, rather extensive corrections to the data are necessary. There is some disagreement among researchers as to the feasibility of making some of the corrections. For this reason, this paper will concentrate primarily on travel time analysis. Wave amplitude analysis will be mentioned occasionally only in passing. This does not mean that amplitude analysis does not provide important data on rock parameters, only that for the present there are limitations on its uses. Vertical seismic profiling (VSP), extensively used in recent years in oil exploration, is similar to CBST. Instead of using two boreholes, however, the VSP method uses an array of seismic sources or detectors down one hole and an array of detectors or sources along the surface radiating outward from the hole. While adequate for determining vertical velocity distributions, the VSP method is not, by itself, suitable for most engineering or mining projects. Ground water, one of Florida's most valuable resources, is also one of its most abundant. The State is fortunate to have several prolific ground- water reservoirs that yield tremendous quantities of water to wells and to some of the world's largest springs. These ground-water reservoirs, or aquifers are of two types artesian and nonarteaian. Ad artesian aquifer is one that contains water under sufficient pressure to rise above the top of the oontaining formation. A nonartesian aquifer is one that contains water which is not confined, and the upper water surface (water table) is free to rise and fall. The principal source of ground water in Florida is the artesian Floridan aquifer which supplies most of the water users in the State. Nonartesian sources include the Biscayne aquifer of southeastern Florida, the sand-and-gravel aquifer of extreme western Florida, and a shallow aquifer which lies at depths of less than 100 feet over much of the State. The accompanying map shows the approximate areas where these aquifers are the main source of supply; however, the boundaries do not represent the areal extents of the aquifers. For example, the Floridan aquifer extends beyond the southern boundary shown on the map, but it is not of great economic significance there because the water is highly mineralized. Aquifers other than the four described occur in the State, but they are, for the most part, of minor significance. One of these is an artesian aquifer which is formed by permeable zones that occur locally within the confining beds above the Floridan aquifer.

YOPES 17.1.1--CURRENT The history of surface mining essentially is one of mining coal, copper, iron and aluminum ores, of placer mining gold and tin, and of pits and quarries producing clays, gypsum, phosphate rock, sand, gravel and stone. Table 17-1 is a summary of the estimated world and United States production of crude metallic and non¬metallic ores and coal in 1969. It includes estimates of the quantities produced by surface-mining methods. Two-thirds of the 10 billion tons are mined from the surface, ranging from a third of the coal. 57% of the metallic ores, and nearly all clays, stone, sand and gravel. Production by surface methods in the United States, parallels that of the world with one exception: about 90% of the copper and iron ore is mined from the surface, whereas elsewhere only about half the copper ore is surface mined. In Canada, surface mining of the Athabasca tar-sand deposits is a recent large-scale unique operation. In surface mining of coal and, to a lesser extent, metallic ores, much waste is stripped, but in nonmetallic pits and quarries the ratio between waste and ore usually is small. A SIMAN and CINEMA PC-based simulation model was developed to simulate and animate the truck-shovel operations of surface mines. The model is capable of simulating one mathematical dispatching strategy using linear and dynamic programming and six heuristic dispatching strategies. Data were collected from an actual operating mine through time studies and analysis of historical records. The statistical analyses were performed and appropriate theoretical distributions were fitted for various time events in the truck-shovel work cycle. The model was then applied to study overall impact of these dispatching strategies on constrained and unconstrained mine productivity. The simulation/animation model developed in this study seems to be an efficient planning tool for choosing optimal fleets and finding an 'optimal" dispatching strategy to produce an equilibrium between "the quality and quantity of production.

Automation and mechanization in mining has no value of its own. It has to be measured in economic terms or in Increased safety or in the utilization of deposits which otherwise were unavailable. The mechanization and automation of workphases in the mining and rock construction process has led to the decrease of manual work. This has had a very essential importance in the countries where the labor is expensive or where there has been difficulties in the availability of labor. The work has become much more efficient. We would like to argue that the need of mechanization has been initiated mostly from the above mentioned reasons. The origin has seldom been the "process" approach or the real need or will to change the way mining is done. Through mechanization bigger unit sizes of machines and operations have become possible and better efficiency is achieved. This has led to new problems as well, but in most cases they have been solved so that better and more economic outcome than before has been the end result. The changes have thus been justified. It is perhaps feasible to state already at this stage that we see that the mechanization andautomation steps in the difficult conditions of mining have been remarkable. There is not a slightest underestimation of the achievements and importance of this development in our mind. Where we are to- day is the result of the experience, know-how and technological excellency of all the parties involved. The natural approach to automation has been through mechanization and automation of individual unit operations and machines. This has been the way as well in manufacturing industry as in mining. There may not have been any other way. The other presentations in this session tell us very clearly of the approach .which the machine manufacturers have taken. They have not done it alone but 'most of the initiatives have come from them. A good use of their present achievements gives many possibilities to increase the, efficiency in mining. We would, however, like to extend the view one step further to the future:

Introduction The Red Dog zinc/lead deposit in northwest Alaska is the second largest zinc deposit ever discovered. Being developed by Cominco Alaska, with startup scheduled for early 1990, it will ultimately be the largest zinc mine in the Western World. Table 1 shows the reserves of the deposit. Bob Baker, a local bush pilot, discovered Red Dog in 1968. The US Geological Survey assessed the find. But the Red Dog site had been withdrawn from staking by provisions in the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971 (ANCSA). Under the terms of ANCSA, the deposit was selected by the NANA Regional Corporation, one of 13 native corporations established by the Act. Then, in 1980, the US Congress confirmed this selection, in the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. In 1982, Cominco and NANA reached an agreement that has led to the development of the mine. Under the agreement, Cominco leases the property from NANA, develops and operates the mine, and markets the concentrate produced. In return, NANA receives royalties and, after capital recovery, participates in the net proceeds from the operation. The Alaska State Government is also playing a role in the development of the mine. Under the auspices of the Alaska Industrial Development Authority (AIDA), the state will construct, own, and operate the DeLong Mountains Regional Transportation System. This consists of a 84-km (52¬mile) road from the minesite to the Chukchi Sea. Located here are the port facilities necessary to store and ship the annual concentrate production and receive the mine fuel and supplies. For using this transportation system, Cominco will pay an annual toll fee. Over the anticipated 50 year life of the operation, the fee will provide a 6.5% return to the State of Alaska. In late 1986, Cominco's Board of Directors approved the Red Dog project. And, during the summer of 1987, road construction began. In February 1988, initial stripping began at the ore body and construction started at the millsite. Project setting The project site is approximately 1000 km (600 miles) northwest of Anchorage, 84 km (52 miles) east of tidewater on the Chukchi Sea, and 192 km (120 miles) north of the Arctic Circle (Fig. 1). The countryside consists of low, rolling hills that lead into mountains north and east of the deposit. The vegetation is typical tundra mat. And the site is in an area of permafrost. However, the permafrost is relatively warm and some areas have been found to be thawed. Examples would be creek bottoms and the site of the main waste dump.

The El Sauzal deposit is a classic, high sulfidation, epithermal gold system located in southwestern Chihuahua State, Mexico. The prospect was discovered by a Francisco Gold Corp. geologist in1995. El Sauzal was encountered as a result of an extensive grass-root exploration program in the rugged, dissected volcanic terrains of the Sierra Madre Occidental, around the historical Batopilas Silver Camp. At El Sauzal, high grade gold is hosted within a series of more permeable, low-dipping, lithic and fine-grained dacitic rocks of early Tertiary age. The mineralization appears to be both structurally and lithologically controlled. The alteration characteristics are typical of a high sulfidation system including kaolinite, illite, alunite, dickite and pyrophyllite. The deposit’s gold distribution, as recorded from drill-hole data and surface samples, varies from 0.2 to 650.0 g/t. The estimated geological resource, as calculated from an independent study completed in 1998, was 3.0 million oz @ 2.03 g/t including a minable reserve of1.8 million oz @ 3.3 g/t.

Spoil instability has been a problem at a coal mine in interior Alaska. Parameters such as original site topography, groundwater conditions, material properties, spoil-pile geometry, geology, permafrost, natural slope instability, changing weather conditions, and dense, near-surface vegetation have interacted to produce unstable slopes. Several failure modes have been identified including deep seated earth block slides, bimodal earth flows, and solifluction. Thawing of permafrost also created conditions where sliding of spoil along the interface separating the spoil and the natural ground surface occurred when the cohesion and the friction angle of that zone was reduced to zero and below 15?respectively.

Disseminated epithermal gold metallization occurs within a breccia unit interpreted to be a submarine debris flow. Gold is associated with oxidized pyrite, fluorite, and jasperoidal silica. A minimum of 8 Mt (9 million at) of open-pittable mining reserves will be cyanide heap leached as run-of-mine ore at a rate of 0.9 Mt (1.0 million stpy). Careful evaluation of the combined results of successive sampling projects has established the pit plan, minable reserves, and process metallurgy of the operation. The sampling procedure utilized for a given test depended upon geological interpretation as well as the procedures, successes, and failures of previous tests. This paper summarizes the sampling and testing procedures of the development effort in light of the project goals and attendant problems in achieving them.

An in-mine seismic technique for detecting faults has been tested in a Western U.S. coal mine. This technique has been used extensively in the U. K. to help guide longwall mining operations. Explosives detonated on the face of a seam generate sound waves which propagate into the seam. Reflections from faults are picked up by sensors on the same face. Computer processing is then used to determine the fault locations. A known fault was successfully located in this test. Modifications to the U. K. procedures were required for the relatively thicker roan and pillar mines common in the Western U. S.

Henderson Mine has been transporting molybdenum ore using a rail haulage system for the past 21 years. Due to the age of this system, limited performance, and obsolescence, a capital investment decision was imminent. Henderson used this opportunity to evaluate other transportation methods and continuously improve their mining practices. These efforts resulted in a new mine plan for Henderson, which ensures that Henderson will continue to supply high quality molybdenum into the 21st century. This paper will discuss the dramatic changes taking place at the Henderson Mine as a new production level is mined. These changes include the installation of an underground crushing, conveying, and truck haulage system, as well as increasing the scale of the panel caving process. Each of these topics will be discussed, as will their rock mechanics and material flow implications.

3-D or pseudo 3-D visualization of orebodies and mining related processes such as loading and tramming, are now commonly used by the mining industry. An approach is presented that can aid the engineer in creating the visualizations necessary for accurate presentations for use in public relations, safety training, production projections, reclamation plans, etc. It is shown that the creation of such digital representations of mining environments are independent of the mining package used to create the original mine design. Once a proper model has been created, any view of the areas is possible. These views can be taken from any number of stationary points or entered into an animation showing the progress of a mining construction. The paper focuses on the presentation of the steps used to accomplish the visualization and an example is for a quarry fill placement project.

INTRODUCTION The Astoria property is located in the prolifically mineralized Abitibi greenstone belt and is one of the most advanced projects presently under development by Yorbeau Resources Inc. This property, which hosts the Astoria gold deposit, is located in the southern part of Rouyn township, Abitibi area, Quebec, 4 km south of the city of Rouyn-Noranda (Figure 1). The Astoria deposit has been the subject of underground development for over a half century, beginning with Granada Rouyn Mining Co. in the 1930's and followed by Astoria Rouyn Mines Ltd. in the 1940's. Yorbeau Resources Inc. acquired the property in 1984 and has, since then, conducted numerous exploration programs on this gold deposit. The diluted reserves of the Astoria deposit are estimated at 1,3 million metric tons grading 6,14 grams of gold per metric ton (1.4 million st at 0.18 oz/st). This reserve figure is based on the results of surface and underground exploration carried out from January 1986 to June 1987 and includes ore in the proven, probable and possible categories. This paper is divided into two sections. The first part includes a summary of the geological environment including a description of the gold bearing zones and a short discussion on wall rock alteration. The second part of this paper reviews the underground work and the objective of the ongoing exploration program.
