INTRODUCTION FMC's Paradise Peak mine, located 13 Ian (8 miles) south of Gabbs, Nevada, became opera¬tional in April of 1986 (Figure 1). It was designed and built by Davy McKee, who was instrumental in equipment design and selection. It is the 7th largest gold deposit in the United States with defined reserves of 10.9 mt (12 million st) containing 34 million gms (1.1 million tr oz) of recoverable gold and 933 million gms (30 million tr oz) of recoverable silver. The mine extracts ore by the open-pit method, taking advantage of a 1.5:1 stripping ratio. The mill operates at a 3600 mt/day (4000 st/d) capacity. Crushing is done in three stages to achieve an ore size of minus 0.635 cm (0.25 inches). Grinding further reduces the ore to 85% minus 100 mesh. The ground ore is treated with cyanide in agitated leach tanks and then washed in the counter-current decantation (OCD) thickeners. Zinc is added to the clarified, deaerated pregnant solution to precipitate the precious metals. The precipitate is acid digested to eliminate excess zinc, filtered and retorted to drive off contained mercury. The retorted precipitate is then fluxed, melted and poured through cascade molds. Dore bars are cleaned for shipment and the slag is sent to an in-house slag treatment system. ELECTROSTATIC SEPARATION The dry electrostatic slag treatment system at Paradise Peak is the first installation of its kind. Electrostatic separation has been widely used in mineral processing since the early 1950's. A brief discussion of the theory behind the process is helpful to those not familiar to electrostatic separation. Charging and sepa¬rating slags, dry minerals or other materials by ion bombardment is the most common form of electrostatic separation. Millions of tonnes of minerals are processed each year by this method. In an ion bombardment separation, granular material is fed onto a grounded metal cylinder (or roll) and charged by a corona-producing electrode placed above the roll's surface (Figure 2). While both conductors and non¬conductors become charged, only the conductor is able to lose its charge. The charged non¬conductor, as it rests on the roll's surface, "sees" an oppositely charged image of itself in the metal surface. It is attracted to the image charge, becomes electrostatically pinned to, and moves with the roll's surface. The conductive particle also sees an image and is attracted to it. But upon touching the roll's surface, it discharges rapidly to the grounded surface and is thrown free from the roll's surface with a projectile motion. In the case of precious metal slags, the con¬ductive particles would be metallic prills of dore metal; and the nonconductive particles would be the slag, free of metal. Middling grains, generally, are in the form of a metallic prill encased in or incompletely liberated from slag. LABORATORY TESTING A number of precious metal slag samples have been tested in the laboratory. It has been found that the composition of slags vary widely from one refinery operation to another. Typical laboratory procedure is to crush and size the slag followed by two-stage lab-scale electro¬static separation. The conductor fractions from the first and second pass are then combined as a prill concentrate; middlings fraction and clean slag tailings from the second pass are held separate. Selected results from laboratory testing are shown in Table 1. It is important to note in Table 1 that the assays represent overall silver and gold, not metallic values. From experience, the laboratory results are typically lower in grade and recovery than the industrial installations. This is largely due to the hydroscopic nature of precious metal slags coupled with the high local humidity in Carpco's Jacksonville, Florida, location. With the growing exportation of coal from North America to the Pacific Rim countries and Europe, has come an increasing awareness of the need to determine economically optimized amounts of incombustibles (ash and moisture contents) for the shipped product. Despite the fact that demand bas caused a steady improvement in selling price, particularly for thermal coals, growing production and transportation costs have compelled producers to keep a sharp eye open for ways and means of minimizing the latter since this probably represents the greatest single potential for making savings. Consequently the Coal Industry has become acutely aware of the economic ramifications of eliminating moisture in particular, thereby producing further saving in the cost of transportation of product from the mine to the consumer. There is, however, a lower limit to which dewatering or drying can be taken and this relates to dustiness which is a function of the characteristics of the coal and the methods used for handling and storage during trans-shipment. Overdrying can lead to serious dust losses and difficulties in handling particularly if the coal contains a large proportion of fines. The ways and means for achieving this "happy medium" of optimization in moisture removal are seemingly undergoing gradual modification largely assisted by the following factors. a) Improvement in effectiveness of coal dewatering and drying equipment. b) Improvement in operational availability and utilization of the equipment. c) The development of surfactants, polymer flocculants and other agents which in many cases can be almost tailor made to suit specific applications.

In recent years, the use of shotcrete, a practice familiar to the mining industry, has been on the increase. This research has come about because of the recognized need for a safe, easy way to line small diameter bored raises (less then 150cm). Up until now, an operator has gone down the raise and applied the concrete lining manually, using the shotcrete method of application. With an automated system, there would be no man positioned in the bore itself. All control functions could be commanded from a central location. Shotcreting in the confined space of a small diameter bored raise presents problems that can be overcome by the application of shotcrete using a remote system.

"Groundwater with elevated sulfate and metals was treated using a sulfate-reducing pilot PRB consisting of a series of six 55-gallon drums filled with ZVI (Fe0), wood chips, brewer’s grain, limestone, and emulsified vegetable oil (EVO). Sulfate was reduced from >3000 to <250 mg/L and Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zn concentrations declined up to 3 orders of magnitude in 2 months. After 6 months of operation at a 7.5-day retention time, sulfate broke through. The system was then rejuvenated by injecting EVO in each drum and operated for 5 more months at a 9-day retention time. Sulfate-reducing bacteria in the pilot system grew by 3 to 4 orders of magnitude in 2 months. Some cementation of the PRB media was observed in the first 2 drums after processing 25 pore volumes of water, due to preferential upstream precipitation of sulfides; this can be avoided through operational modifications. Resulting permeability losses were estimated at 0.1% to 1% per year. Absorption/desorption was tested at bench scale to evaluate the use of various oil-soaked sorbents as a slow-release source of dissolved carbon. The tests show that oil sorbents can increase the useful life of a PRB between oil refills to over 100 pore volumes. INTRODUCTION High sulfate concentrations, low pH, and dissolved metal exceedances are common characteristics of mining-influenced water (MIW). Above-ground such MIW is commonly treated using biochemical reactors (BCR). In a BCR, water generally flows vertically downward through a layer of biomass, such as wood chips, manure, etc. The dissolved organics resulting from the decay of this material are oxidized first by microbes using oxygen; when oxygen is exhausted, other bacteria can use nitrate, and then sulfate to oxidize organics. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) reduce sulfate to sulfide, which quickly reacts with metals to form largely insoluble and stable metal sulfides. These reactions can be summarized as follows:"

Disposal of mine tailings in "waters of the United States" is presently prohibited even though case studies indicate that the practice may be environmentally viable. To simulate disposal in the natural environment, nine containers of tailings and sediment were instrumented and placed on the ocean floor near Juneau, AK as were ninety-six biosample containers. Pore water concentrations of five metals were determined, and biota populations were characterized for both materials. After 500 days of exposure there were no statistical macro scale differences between tailings and sediment biota populations or Cu, Pb, and Zn pore water concentrations. Tailings released slightly more Fe than sediment, but sediment released significantly more Mn than tailings. Disposal of mine tailings in marine waters may be environmentally safe.

Technical Support, one of several major organizational units in the Mine Safety and Health Administration, provides technical assistance to the mining community in all areas of health and safety. One of its many areas of expertise is noise control. Depending upon the needs of the operator or inspector, the services provided can range from locating major noise sources to actually building noise controls. Over the years a vast amount of knowledge has been obtained as to what will work and what will not. DESIGN GOALS While many noise controls have been developed for mining equipment and operations, the most acceptable (ergo successful) have achieved the following design goals: - a noise level reduction of at least 5 decibels; - minimum interference with production; - inexpensive to install; and - effective in reducing low frequency noise.

In an effort to find better ways to dispose of potentially toxic material, the effect of longitudinal and lateral dispersion on the dilution of toxic fluids was investigated numerically and experimentally. Homogeneous and non- homogeneous tests were conducted to model this effect for surface mine backfills. These tests used a high-density zone [package] to bury undesirable material. The studies, utilizing inert tracers, showed that an increase in density in a soil will decrease the maximum level of tracer in the discharge. Within the range of experiments performed and using only natural materials, a 65 percent reduction in peak concentration was obtained.

Pyrophyllite is a naturally occurring hydrous aluminum silicate with the molecular formula SiO,,AI,,(OH), or, as more commonly expressed, the oxide formula A120,~4Si02~H20. Pyrophyllite is rarely found in deposits as the pure mineral and is often intimately associated with quartz, sericite, kaolinite, and diaspore. These associated minerals, to a large degree, help determine the most appropriate commercial application for a given pyrophyllite ore. Structural similarities plus the generally soft platy nature of pyrophyllite has in the past caused it to be included with talc in applications and production data. The Minerals Yearbook, published annually by the US Bureau of Mines (USBM), still reports on talc and pyrophyllite together, although admitting that they do not share the same uses. Pyrophyllite has also at times been considered a clay mineral because of its structure and chemistry. The refractory properties of pyrophyllite have been known for nearly 200 years, but it has only been in the past 60 to 70 years that a variety of applications have been developed to exploit the unique characteristics of this mineral. Worldwide, pyrophyllite is a component of refractories, whiteware, foundry mold dressings, pesticides, paint, plastics, rubber, cement, fiberglass, and soap. Historical Overview The most salient refractory features of pyrophyllite are its low coefficient of thermal expansion, high thermal conductivity, low moisture expansion, and good resistance to corrosion by molten metals and basic slags. One of the first recorded uses of this mineral was as firebrick in Japan in the early 1800s. This followed its discovery in 1797 on Mount Omotoyama at the site of the present Mitsuishi mine. In addition to firebrick, sawn blocks of ore were used for carvings and in the manufacture of slate pencils and signature seals. The Mitsuishi mine is still one of Japan&apos;s largest. By the mid-1800s, refractories were being made in Japan from roseki (a pyrophyllite-bearing ore) for the construction of metal melting furnaces. The mineral did not get its name until 1829 when R. Herman, testing a sample of supposed talc from the gold-quartz veins at the Berezovo deposit in the Urals, showed that it was actually an aluminum silicate and designated it pyrophyllite. This name was derived from the Greek pur for fue and phullon for leaf, in allusion to the effect of heat in causing separation of the laminae in foliated varieties (Mellor, 1927). The exact date of the discovery of pyrophyllite in the United States is uncertain, but it is believed that the talc and soapstone deposits noted in an 1827 report on the geology of the slate belt of North Carolina were actually pyrophyllite occurrences (Olmstead, 1827). Pyrophyllite was first used in North Carolina on a local basis in the early 1800s. Blocks were sawn and cut for use as stove linings, mantels, chimneys, fireplaces, and gravestones. This was the material of choice because it did not shrink when heated, but cut easily and hardened as it weathered. Pyrophyllite crayons were sold commercially by local gold miners for steel marking and as tailor&apos;s chalk from about 1800 until 1922. It was during this period that pyrophyllite was discovered near the town of Hemp (later renamed Robbins), NC. The large quantity of scrap resulting from the sawing of crayons at this deposit prompted the construction in 1921 of a grinding plant. The ore scrap was ground to fine granules and sold to asphalt producers to prevent shingles from sticking together. By the mid-1930s, milled pyrophyllite from North Carolina was also being successfully utilized by the ceramics industry in whiteware for its low cost and ability to shorten firing time. Also during the 1930s, pyrophyllite was first used in kilncar furniture in the United States. Canada was another early entrant in the pyrophyllite business. Mining at the Foxtrap deposit on the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland began in 1904, with ore shipped to the United States. Production from this deposit was mostly sporadic in the ensuing years until 1956 when mining began for shipment and captive use in US tile manufacture. This production has remained continuous and still essentially captive to the present. The Foxtrap deposit is currently the sole commercial source of pyrophyllite in Canada.

Lignin sulphonic acid (or its salt) is commercially used as a surfactant in the Zinc Pressure Leach process. The surfactant prevents liquid sulphur from coating unreacted zinc minerals thus allowing the leaching reaction to proceed. Infrared studies have been performed using the Attenuated Total Reflection-Fourier trans- form infrared technique (ATR-FTIR); the application of this technique permitted the "in-situ" study of the adsorption of the surfactant by sphalerite. The spectral records obtained from study indicate that the lignin sulphonate ions are both physically and chemically adsorbed by the sphalerite.

Sodium silicate (water glass) is a modifier reagent widely used in flotation with the function of a depressant or dispersant. The interaction between sodium silicate and mineral surfaces is still not well understood. This investigation aimed to illuminate the sodium silicate action mechanism as a depressant in the flotation of the minerals quartz and calcite. The experiments were done with high-purity mineral samples in the particle size range below 147 µm. The microflotation tests in a modified Hallimond tube showed that, in all systems tested, the efficiency of sodium silicate increased with the concentration. At concentrations above 1,500 g/t, almost total depression (96% for calcite and 97% for quartz) was achieved. The variation of sodium silicate modulus did not alter the quartz flotation performance in the presence of amine (150 g/t). The most efficient depression pH range was observed between 5 and 8. Above pH 10, the depressant action of sodium silicate was negligible. The infrared spectra obtained at pH 7 after silicate contact showed the presence of the groups OH and Si-OH, both suggesting that the adsorption of the neutral species Si(OH)4, as well as siloxane groups (Si-O-Si), attributed to adsorption of polymeric species. Sharing electron pairs is the proposed adsorption mechanism between Si(OH)4 and polymeric species and the surface sites (Si-O on quartz and Ca-O on calcite). At pH 11, the electrostatic repulsion prevents the species adsorption, impairing the sodium silicate action.

Around two-thirds of world silver mine production comes from mines where the majority of ex-mill revenue is obtained from other metals. In this talk I will illustrate the importance of this output of silver as a by-product of the mining of various base metals. I will also consider the impact of relative changes in base and precious metal prices on mill-head revenue, and therefore, on production decisions. During the latter half of 1982 improving silver prices encouraged re-openings at several base metal mines. Thus some production of lead, zinc and copper can be regarded as partly conditional on the prevailing silver price. Conversely, a good deal of silver production can be considered to be independent of the silver price and dependent on the production of some base metal. It is the degree to which the value of silver mined affects the revenues of nominally, base metal, producers that is the central concern of this presentation.

This report is a review of current research being conducted in the United States which is intended to increase the utilization of coal ash. In order that this report be as timely as possible, the majority of information was obtained by direct comunication with the people listed in the references. Due to the magnitude of the flyash research program, some projects may be inadvertently omitted. Field research on flyash for use as an agricultural fertilizer is being monitored at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.1 This research is directed at determining the plant nutrients that are available in flyash as well as the quantities of flyash that can be applied to agricultural soil without adversely affecting plant growth, Coal mine spoil and refuse bank reclamation with power plant flyash is being demonstrated by United States Bureau of Mines, Morgantown, West Virginia.2 Numerous highly visible coal refuse piles and strip mine spoil banks contribute to air, water, and land environmental problems. Revegetation of several experimental sites with flyash from bituminous coal-fired power plants was undertaken in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Conventional farm equipment was used at some of the sites while large earthmovers were required at others. The flyash served as a neutralizing agent, dilutent, and soil amendment to provide some nutrients which enhanced vegetation of the barren areas, Estimated cost of reclamation by this method is $300.00 per acre of previously leveled area. This figure can vary considerably depending upon the topography of the site, haul distance, quality of the soil and quality of flyash.

Quarry operators must continue to change and adapt environmental compliance methods to meet the increasingly demanding regulations. To fulfill industry needs, a computer-based decision support system is being developed to facilitate decision making that mine operators are required to make regarding environmental responsibilities. This system can help to determine permitting and compliance measures needed for air, surface water, groundwater, noise, aesthetics, vegetation, wetlands, hazardous wastes, storage tanks and wildlife habitats during the development, operation, and closure phases of mining. Operators will utilize the system&apos;s user-friendly interface consisting of mouse driven responses and limited keyboard entries on a desktop computer. The system is easy to upgrade according to the user&apos;s needs and changes in current laws and regulations. Data input models, user interfaces, and support of decision making are explained. The program permits inclusion of the decision maker&apos;s own insights through "what-if&apos; analysis, in which the user can change ad hoc entries and check the related consequences. Using this approach, the user has complete control over all steps of the decision making process. A storm water example is selected to demonstrate the potential benefits of the support system to environmental decision makers.

The use of chemical additives in ultrafine grinding will be reviewed in this paper for the case of grinding of quartz in solutions of surfactants and inorganic electrolytes including some dispersants under different conditions of pH and ionic strength. Mechanisms are examined by correlating the grinding effects with those obtained for the influence of these chemicals on zeta potential, pulp fluidity and flocculation/dispersion characteristics. The analysis suggests grinding depends mainly on the state of aggregation of the ground products in- side the mill and the pulp fluidity. Implications of the observed effects on ultrafine grinding in general are discussed.

The term clay is somewhat ambiguous unless specifically defined, because it is used in three ways: 1) as a diverse group of fine-grained minerals, 2) as a rock term, and 3) as a particle size term. As a rock term, clay is difficult to define because of the wide variety of materials that comprise it; therefore, the definition must be general. Clay is a natural, earthy, fine grained material comprised largely of a group of crystalline minerals known as the clay minerals. These minerals are hydrous silicates comprised mainly of silica, alumina, and water. Several of these minerals also contain appreciable quantities of iron, alkalies, and alkaline earths. Many definitions state that a clay is plastic when wet. Most clay materials do have this property, but some clays are not plastic, e.g., halloysite and flint clay. As a particle size term, clay is used for the category that includes the smallest particles. The maximum size particles in the clay size grade are defined differently on various grade scales. Soil investigators and mineralogists generally use 2 pm. as the maximum size, whereas the widely used scale by Wentworth (1922) defines clay as material finer than approximately 4 pm. Some authorities find it convenient to use the term clay for any fine-grained, natural, earthy, argillaceous material (Grim, 1968). When used this way, the term includes clay, shale, or argillite, and some argillaceous soils. Even though no standard definition of the term clay is accepted by geologists, agronomists, engineers, and others, the term is generally understood by those who use it. Clay is an abundant natural raw material, and it has an amazing variety of uses and properties which will be discussed in this chapter. Clays rank among the leading industrial minerals in both tonnages produced and total value. Their importance is indicated in Table 1, which lists the 1988, 1989, and 1990 productions according to the US Bureau of Mines (Ampian, 1992). As industrial minerals, clays are a complex group that consists of several mineral commodities, each having somewhat different mineralogy, geologic occurrence, technology, and uses. In this section these commodities are organized as follows: 1) bentonite, 2) common clay, 3) hormites, and 4) kaolin. Fuller&apos;s earth is discussed in both the bentonite and hormite chapters. Fuller&apos;s earth is a term based on use, and both bentonites and hormites are sold as fuller&apos;s earth. The overlapping is particularly evident where both bentonite and non-bentonite fuller&apos;s earth are used for the same purposes or products, such as in drilling mud, bleaching or clarifying fats and oils, and carriers for insecticides and fertilizers. Kaolin, ball clay, halloysite, and refractory clays are grouped together because they consist mainly of minerals of the kaolin group. Waste solutions from sea water desalination processes are enriched in minerals by a factor of two or three. This suggests that extraction of selected mineral components from the concentrated brine might help pay desalination costs. The possible recovery of gold has received particular mention. Sonstadt, in 1872, reported the gold content of sea water as 65,000 micrograms per cubic meter, or 65,000 parts per trillion. At $35 an ounce, this is equivalent to $0.065 per ton of sea water. Fritz Haber, however, after his abortive venture to restore Post War I Germany to economic health by recovering gold from the sea, concluded the gold content was 4 micrograms per cubic meter. Haber&apos;s analysis is equivalent to 0.0004 cent per ton. In the past 10 years, investigators using advanced analytical techniques reported from 4 to 27 micrograms per cubic meter. Our brief experiments to determine a threshhold value for the gold in sea water employed solvent extraction for initial concentration, evaporation of the gold-loaded organic for further concentration, and atomic absorption analysis of the gold in the concentrated organic. Radioactive gold was used as a tracer for monitoring the gold through the concentration and analytical steps. Our method established that sea water contains about 11 parts gold per trillion parts sea water, or 0.001 cent worth per ton. This agrees closely with results of recent studies by other investigators employing ion exchange resins and neutron activation techniques.

There are a large number of facilities throughout the world which handle coal, such as preparation plants. Many other facilities use coal as a fuel, such as cement and lime factories. Although coal can be handled safely and can be an efficient fuel, there are explosion hazards which are accentuated as the particle size is reduced. Particle sizes of coal which can fuel a propagating explosion occur within thermal dryers, cyclones, baghouses, pulverized-fuel systems, grinding mills, and other process or conveyance equipment. This paper discusses how explosions can occur within these facilities.

In this paper, solid bed erosion processes and the mechanisms involved when a two-phase liquid-solid mixture flows over a bed of solids in a horizontal annulus are analyzed. There are few such studies available with some authors arguing that the flow rate for erosion is always less than the flow rate for the suspension of solid particles thus necessitating further study and analysis of such phenomena. Tests were run to determine the mechanism of erosion and the erosion velocities of the solid bed formed in a concentric annulus for three flu-ids, water, a low concentration water solution of Carboxyl-methyl-cellulose (CMC), which behaved as a Newtonian fluid and a higher concentration CMC water solution which behaved as a power law fluid. Glass spheres of 2 mm nominal diameter were used as solids. The flow rate at which erosion occurred together with the mechanism of bed erosion were determined visually, while the whole process was video recorded. Our tests indicated different erosion mechanisms and different erosion velocities for the three tested liquids, with the liquid viscosity playing a major role. The first mechanism, observed for water flow, gives erosion from the front of the bed while the second mechanism, observed for the flow of the two viscous fluids, gives erosion from the top of the bed. The role of each of the parameters to erosion is investigated, whether it is turbulent flow with the turbulent fluctuations being more capable to remove the solids from the formed bed or whether it is liquid viscosity, which results in the hydrodynamic shearing force. The results demonstrate that liquid viscosity plays a role in the erosion mechanism and yields different erosion velocities of the solid bed hence, it should be taken into account when modeling flow pattern transitions for solid-liquid flows. Prior studies have not identified this and it could be the reason of the disagreement between theoretical models and experimental and field data.

Recently, a new theory of the subsidence of rock masses has been advanced by Litwiniszyn and coworkers, which is based on the notion that the individual rock particles perform random walks. It is shown in the present paper that the final equations of the random walk theory can be justified from general principles of statistical mechanics in which no specific theoretical model of particle behavior has to be made. The theory appears to account appropriately for subsidence phenomena.

The objective of the present investigations is to establish the effect of the preliminary mechanical activation of phosphates on the degree of phosphorus extraction by bioconversion of Bulgarian and Tunisian phosphates using A. niger fungi and T: thiooxidans microorganisms. The influence of the phosphate concentrations, the type of the nutritive medium and the incubation times on the process of biological mobilization of the phosphates was studied. When the concentration of phosphates in the medium is twice as high, an equal and/or higher degree of phosphorus extraction can be achieved through the bioconversion of mechanically activated phosphates compared with non- activated phosphates under similar conditions. A maximum degree of 90+% phosphorus extraction in utilizable form was achieved at definite conditions.
