An airborne dust cloud is an ensemble of particles of varied size, density, shape and states of aggregation. An understanding and quantifying of the dispersion and deposition of the dust generated in mines is essential to the development of measures for reducing worker exposure to dust. In coal mining, the major portion of the dust is generated during the cutting of coal using either a shearer or a continuous miner. The major phenomenon affecting ambient concentration is the deposition of dust. Particle deposition may take place due to the effect of gravitational, inertial, electrostatic, and thermal forces, and mechanisms such as Brownian and eddy diffusion, and inertial impaction. The three major mechanisms of deposition in turbulent flow in mines are diffusion (Brownian and eddy), sedimentation and inertial impaction. The mechanisms determining particle deposition are size dependent.

INTRODUCTION With the introduction of large diameter hole drilling to underground mining, a need for the development and utilization of new blasting technology has arisen. This new technology has resulted in more efficient blasting and in easier and cheaper mining. The application of spherical charges to the crater blasting method is an im¬portant part of this technology. Spherical charges, or their geometric equivalent, make for highly efficient use of explosives in the cratering application. Their geo¬metrical configuration, normally a length :diameter ra¬tio of <6:1, limits their charge weight size. For exam¬ple in a 165-mm (61/2-in.) hole a spherical charge weighs approximately 34 kg (75 lb). These dimensional and weight restrictions require careful engineering design and control in the production application. Strathcona mine, a large tonnage mechanized cut¬and-fill and blasthole stoping operation located on the north rim of the Sudbury Basin, has successfully em¬ployed the crater blasting method in production blasting for the past two and a half years (as of 1979). As a result, this method, using spherical charges, has made possible the development and implementation of a verti¬cal retreat blasthole mining method which is being used for rib pillar recovery. The crater method used at Strathcona essentially in¬volves blasting off horizontal slices of ore into an under¬cut while retreating vertically to the pillar overcut elevation. Loading and priming of the holes is achieved from the overcut and the blasted muck is recovered by load¬haul-dump (LHD) units through a drawpoint system. Valuable experience on the behavior and performance of explosives in large diameter holes has been gained in both the operating and engineering fields from the appli¬cation of this blasting method. It has been used in drop raising and is currently being evaluated for use in pri¬mary stoping operations. Also, serious consideration is being given to its use for the recovery of post pillars in mined-out and backfilled cut and fill stopes. The method has significant advantages over conven¬tional methods of pillar recovery from economic, ground control, and safety points of view. These include cost benefits due to a minimum stoping development, less ground support, reduced labor requirements, and faster mining rate. Research on the blasting mechanism indi¬cated the method should result in less damage to fill walls than would be normally expected with conven¬tional longhole or large diameter hole cylindrical blast¬ing (benching). This is primarily due to the limited charge weight per delay because of the size dimensions of a spherical as compared with a cylindrical charge and also because the large diameter holes experience less de¬viation than standard-sized longholes. Experience has shown that wall damage has been minimized with the use of this method. The safety aspects of the working environment are also improved as there is no require¬ment for manpower to go under exposed backs after blasting, which is a significant improvement over the cut-and-fill method. CRATERING THEORY General The term cratering, in blasting, is applied to the for¬mation of a surface cavity in a material as the result of detonating an explosive charge in that material. This blasting concept was initially used as a tool in the eval¬uation of explosives performance; however, it has been utilized more recently on surface and to a lesser extent in underground blasting operations. Explosive charges used in crater method are nor¬mally spherical or the geometric equivalent, as research into the application of this breakage mechanism to rock indicates that spherical charges or their equivalent pro¬duce optimum results. In blasting practice, spherical charges have been defined as having a length to diameter (L: D) ratio of 4:1 or less, and up to, but not exceeding a L: D = 6:1. Thus, for holes 165 mm (61/2 in.) diam, a charge 165 mm (61/2 in.) diam, and 990 mm (39 in.) in length would constitute a spherical charge. Crater Testing Crater testing for underground application is nor¬mally accomplished by drilling smaller than production sized horizontal holes into drift walls, placing relatively small charges of explosives in the holes at various depths of burial, firing the charges, and measuring the results. The results are scaled to develop charge weight size and depth of burial parameters for production hole sizes. In theory, this procedure is valid and is appli¬cable for surface blasting; however, in underground applications where the craters are inverted, there is some question as to whether extrapolation of the test results is appropriate. As well as the fact that craters are in¬verted with resultant gravity stresses, testing is often done in a waste rock drift where the properties differ from those in ore rock. There is also some question as to whether a 51 or 76-mm (2 or 3-in.) diam charge behaves similarly to a 165-mm (61/2-in.) charge in a confined borehole. Crater testing at Strathcona involved drilling 76-mm (3-in.) diam holes at various depths ranging from 1 to 3 m (3 to 10 ft). The test holes were drilled in the wall of a predominately waste drift as well as in a stope wall. Charges were placed at various depths of burial, were confined, fired, and the results measured. Although the results were somewhat erratic, possibly because of the aforementioned reasons, they did provide guidelines for basic design for production application. On December 2, 1942, a scientific team lead by Nobel Prize winner Enrico Fermi first initiated and controlled a self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction. This historic event occurring beneath the stands of the University of Chicago football stadium instantly created an entirely new and tremendously broad area of technology. Indeed, the event probably changed the course of world history and considering the curret energy shortage, it probably came none too soon. Following many technological breakthroughs in the ensuing years, this event led to the first full scale nuclear fueled electric generating plant. In December, 1957, the Shippingport Nuclear Power Plant became operational and the United States had entered the era of the nuclear fueled electric generating station. Today, only fifteen years later, there are some thirty-five operating nuclear power plants in the United States with another 56 under construction and 116 on order. Still, we are only scratching the surface of this tremendous energy source. In 1970, less than one-percent of the total electric generating capacity in the United States was nuclear fueled. By 1985, it is projected that 45% of our generating capacity will result from nuclear power plants. These projections are based upoa statistics of six months to a year ago and considering the current energy shortage and recent attempts by the United States Atomic Energy Commission (USAEC) to speed the licensing process and encourage standardized plants, the contribution of nuclear power to our total generating capacity may be even greater. In summary, it is obvious that nuclear power is now, and will continue, playing an important role in our future. Those factions of government, industry and the professional community charged with fully developing this tremendous energy source must deal with it rationally, logically and expediently. The various environmental considerations in nuclear plant siting play an important role in the overall plan.

An earlier paper1 introduced a rapid solution for mine ventilation network problems, employing the digital computer. In this paper, refinements and additions to the computer program which expand its scope of application and a solution to a ventilation network having a coal-mine configuration are presented. Specifically, the revised program--written in FORTRAN for the IBM 7074 computer in Penn State&apos;s Computation Center--is applicable to any mine ventilation network employing natural splitting and having its fan located externally. It accomplishes the following; 1. Distributes an assumed total quantity of air flow among all air- ways of the network, performing iterations until an acceptable level of error is attained and the flow in each airway is known. 2, Computes the pressure drop (head loss) in all airways and the overall network and mine head losses. 3. Determines the operating point for the mine and a given fan, adjusting all air flows and head losses to the actual values.

Optimisation of many oxide gold processing facilities, in most cases, either does not really take place or if it does take place it happens too late or takes too long. This is unf01tunate as extra profits and early cash flows are lost, in new projects, and/or may not be realised at all in others. The situation is easily avoid­ed by ensuring that the plant optimisation happens immediately following commissioning or for an established operation simply 'biting the bullet' and making it happen immediately as a 'better late than never' decision. This type of optimisation requires intense undiluted focus on each and every problem or restriction that contributes to reduced plant performance or bottlenecks, without letting go, until the predetermined outcome is produced. Thus a dedicated person with specific quantative goals is required for these tasks. Methodology and strategies for optimi­sation are discussed and numerous examples presented. The secret of successful heap leaching is discussed.

The industrial mineral filler plant of the Gouverneur Tale Company is equipped with a good dust collection system installed long before the recent popularization of environmental pollution. Credit for this fact is due to the foresight of Mr. R. S. McClellan, Project Manager and subsequent Vice President and General Manager of Gouverneur Talc, who recently retired as Vice President Engineering of the parent organization, the R. T. Vanderbilt Company. Also instrumental in the early stages of plant operation and the solution of start-up problems was J. A. Gustin who is now an engineering consultant located in Martinsville, Va. Credit is most certainly due to the late R. T. Vanderbilt, the company&apos;s founder, who favored and approved the investment in the necessary facilities that were far ahead of all competitors in the industry at that time.

"Since 1994 the Bureau of Reclamation has used risk analysis to evaluate dams. Risk considers both the likelihood of failure and the expected consequences should failure occur. Risk analysis relies on the detailed formulation and critical analysis of all possible potential failure modes. Potential failure modes are formulated by describing the sequence of events that must occur to result in failure, where failure is defined as the uncontrolled release of the impounded reservoir. Failure occurs in response to loadings such as water seepage through a dam (static forces), shaking from an earthquake (dynamic forces), sudden flood inflows (hydrologic forces), or accidental overfilling (operational errors). Reclamation has applied risk analysis methods to inactive and abandoned mines to evaluate tailings dams and flooded underground mines. Case histories of potential failure mode analysis as applied to mine impounded water illustrates what critical technical information is needed to determine if failure is likely, what the consequences of failure are likely to be, and what are the highest risks that should be addressed first. INTRODUCTION Impounded water, and high water content wastes, at mining and industrial processing sites are potential threats to public safety and the environment. Recent failures such as the TVA Kingston flyash impoundment failure in Tennessee in 2008 (5.4 million yd3 released), the Mt Poly Tailings Dam failure in British Columbia in 2014 (5.8 million yd3 released), and the Smarco Fundao Tailings Dam failure in Brazil in 2015 (78 million yd3 released) has renewed attention to this issue. Potential risks from impounded water at mining and industrial sites originates not only from tailing dams, but also from water in process ponds and conveyance pipelines, sediment retention dams, water retention dams, mine pit lakes, and flooded underground mine workings. Conventional water retaining dams also have a record of failure. Notable examples of failure include Vajont Dam in Italy in 1963 (2,600 lives lost), Banqiao and Shimantan Dams in China in 1975 (171,000 lives lost), and Machhu-II Dam in India (10,000 lives lost). After the 1976 Teton Dam failure in Idaho, the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) established a Dam Safety Program. By 1984 the agency developed and began using risk analysis methods. Reclamation operates and maintains an inventory of hundreds of aging dams which were designed and constructed over a period of one hundred years. Many of these facilities were constructed using engineering design and construction methods which would not be considered good practice according to present day standards. Diligent observational monitoring, detailed site investigations, and the application of risk evaluation to the BOR dam inventory has identified many deficiencies resulting in significant demands on available funding for remediation efforts. The application of risk analysis has allowed the agency to rank sites by risk. By giving priority of remedial efforts to high risk sites, significant improvements to dam safety have been achieved. BOR has also applied risk analysis to evaluate and reclaim inactive and abandoned mining and industrial sites. The application of risk analysis methods in the mining industry is not new, the methodology was transferred to the mining industry more than 15 years ago as discussed in ICOLD Bulleting 121 (ICOLD, 2001), yet failures persist. This paper is meant to convey the lessons learned from BOR’s use of risk analyses in its work on mine sites."

To clarify what r mean about this long title, I would like to define the term technology. A standard definition of the word "technology" is "a technical method of achieving a practical purpose". Incidently, another definition of the term is merely "technical language". The same dictionary defines the word "technology" as "having a special, usually practical, knowledge of mechanical or scientific subject." Naturally, the practical purpose of the subject with which we are concerned is solving of problems we encounter in the mining industry. I might further describe the subject of this discourse by defining the term "manager". An old definition, "one who dispenses the duties of his position with care and economy." In line with the above definition most of the technology with which we in the mining industry are confronted with deals with some form of cost reduction. This may be related to the speed of doing an operation or to saving of labor or supply costs. These can be improvements of an existing method or the result of new processes or inventions, such as new machinery.

In this paper the phrase "exploration for blind metal deposits" refers to exploration activities geared to the discovery of metal deposits which cannot be located by visual surface inspection. The word "system" refers to all of the components (people, money, corporations, techniques, etc.) which collectively result in an exploration process. The details of the system or systems which I have employed in exploration will not be discussed because of client relationships. However, some of the more severe problems in exploration result from how the system&apos;s components interact and our attitudes as to what exploration data is telling us, if anything. It is these items which will be discussed. Exploration for blind metal deposits, which has been relatively intense over the last 2S years compared to rather minor outlays prior to World War II has often been an uncoordinated assortment of various specialists employing various techniques (see Dickerson -1). In a program geared to the location of blind deposits, the lack of outcropping deposits or occurrences should not be a deterrent to a well conceived and well planned program. The severe cyclical swings in exploration activity, although often coinciding with depressed metal prices, by and large result from the failure of exploration operators to present a coherent and realistic program to management. It is my opinion that the stream of complaints criticizing management for cyclical exploration support are mostly unwarranted, as many of the programs and goals are ill defined. Although depressed market conditions may serve as the catalyst for exploration cuts, the underlying cause is that when the "chips are down", the non-directional, non-specific nature of many programs is revealed. Thus management should not be castigated for eliminating such programs during bad times, but rather they should be castigated for supporting them during boom periods.

The Middle Ordovician Simpson Group in the Arbuckle Mountains of southern Oklahoma contains sandstones of unusual purity. These have been exploited as glass sands since 1913 (Ham, 1945). Where quarried, the sandstones are uncemented or weakly cemented, greatly facilitating mining and processing. The origin: sedimentary setting, and lack of cementation of these valuable sands has been the source of much discussion. The lowest of the sandstone units in the Simpson is at the base of the Oil Creek Formation. The basal Oil Creek sandstone is exposed in a series of accessible quarries north of the town of Mill Creek in Johnston County. Virtually all conclusions and generalizations concerning origin of the Simpson sandstones are based upon observations made in these quarries. The three Simpson sandstones overlying the Oil Creek share many of the same distinctive qualities, and there is an assumption that they share a common origin.

In 1994, Lone Tree Mine invited Hunter Hawk to participate in a problem-solving arena at their mine located in Valmy, Nevada. Lone Tree was experiencing consistency problems with autoclave valve component quality and delivery. Based upon a prior working relationship at Homestake Mining Company's McLauglin Mine, located in Lake County, California, both customer and vendor enjoyed a measure of rap­po1i and trust - the keys to problem solving communication. This paper is an overview of the problem solving process that has contributed to Lone Tree's excellent record of 95 per cent autoclave availability since 1995.

Today, the future of the coal industry is extremely bright because coal can be produced at a cost which makes it competitive with other energy sources. However, the industry has been forewarned that further cost reductions must be made if it expects to remain a serious contender in the growing energy market. Surface as well as underground operations must be improved. The very same elements which affected production a. few years ago still exist today and will continue to be present in the future. Improvement&apos;s in production mining equipment, mining methods, and auxiliary equipment have resulted in reduced costs over the past few years. Efforts must be continued toward further reducing costs in areas which have been improved previously, and new areas should be investigated for possible improvements. Therefore, new techniques must be developed which will enable the industry to augment its current efforts in reducing the cost of mining. The logical place to begin evaluating the factors affecting production and cost is in the immediate face area where a substantial part of the total cost of mining is incurred. The coal industry stands to gain much through the development of new techniques for analyzing the numerous variables affecting production and by establishing methods for eliminating or minimizing the adverse effect of those variables which can be controlled. Intuition and trial-and-error methods have been the standard means used to resolve many of the factors which influence production. As a result, many elements are overlooked or ignored because their effect on production is not pronounced and cannot be readily resolved. The need for a method of analyzing such factors was recognized by the Office of Coal Research. Therefore, in April 1962, under OCR sponsorship, a. research project was initiated at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI). The objective of the project was to identify the factors which influence mining costs in the immediate production area, and to develop methods and techniques which will enable the coal operator to minimize production costs. The objective of the research at VPI has been successful, and techniques have been developed for establishing quantitative facts concerning the interrelationships of production activities.

Oil based drilling fluids utilize a number of industrial mineral products to accomplish oil and gas drilling in several environments where water based drilling fluids are less effective or inappropriate. These industrial minerals include: organically modified bentonite, organically modified lignite, barite, hematite, mica, calcium chloride and other salts. A variety of organic products are also utilized in oil based drilling fluid formulations. Oil based drilling fluids are preferred in several drilling situations because: they can be used to drill through water sensitive formations; they produce holes that are very close to the drill bit gauge; they exhibit high temperature stability; they are more environmentally acceptable; they minimize producing formation damage; they provide faster drilling rates when used with new polycrystalline diamond drill bits; they minimize pipe sticking and lost rig time.

Mill tailings from skarn-type base metal deposits were studied in order to ascertain potential element mobility in response to weathering. Hypogene ore minerals are sphalerite, galena, and chalcopyrite, showing minor supergene oxidation to smithsonite, cerussite, and covellite. Gangue minerals are pyrite, pyrrhotite, magnetite, hematite, andradite and grossular gamet, hedenbergite, calcite, ankerite, and quartz. Foremost of the eleven tailing piles studied, the hypogene sulfide minerals show no or only incipient post-mining oxidation. Iron oxides and hydroxides form the main oxidation products in the tailings and are enriched in heavy metals. A distinction between pre-and post-mining oxide phases may be obtained based on petrographic observations which distinguish whole-grain versus partial grain replacement. Zn and Cd do not appear to be enriched in the weathering derived oxidation minerals and will be more easily leached from the tailings than other metals.

The Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Fimiston Open Pit is mining through a dense network of disused level workings and stopes of varied sizes and orientations. This study investigated the interaction between underground workings and the pit slope stability, in particular for the ultimate pit depth of over 600 metres. Parametric analyses were conducted on the structural and rock mass properties in order to provide realistic input. Several cases in both 2D and pseudo 3D using UDEC were modeled and analyzed to investigate the performance of the rock mass at various mining stages. The concept of equivalent property factor was also introduced to model the 3D behavior using 2D models. Based on the modelling results, the possible failure mechanisms and deformation of the pit walls were assessed. Factors of safety have been derived for the pit slope at different mining stages using the strength reduction technique. The modelling results agree well with pit performance monitoring results to date. The concept and results presented in this paper could be a useful reference for operations with similar circumstances and stress regimes.

This paper describes practical applications of lineal" programming techniques to help in the planning of production, transportation and shipments at different coal mines. The models are being used by Cyprus Coal Company in eastern and western operations to plan coal production, economic dispatching and blending over variable time horizons. In addition, where a preparation plant exists, the models establish the amount of washing required to meet specific coal sales qualities. The emphasis on this paper is on model development and implementation together with a system to track coal flow and qualities, either raw from the mines to the loading facilities 01" processed through a preparation plant.

Martin County Coal Corporation produces coal from seven continuous miner sections in two coal seams which are often interlaced with rock partings. Because of high clay content and coal oxidation, all minus 100 mesh material is discarded in the preparation process. We began experimenting with various drum lacings on continuous miners in 1983 to improve product size consist and increase machine cutting rates. To date, + 6.35 mm material has increased from 61 to 73% of mined product, minus 0.15 mm material has decreased from 6% to 4% of product, and machine cutting rates have increased by 50 percent.

This paper considers simulation of truck dispatching system designs using maximum expected production of the truck-shovel system as the measure of performance. Two methods are utilized, multiple comparisons with the best (MCB) and the combination of MCB and the variance reduction technique known as common random numbers (CRN). These two techniques are compared via simulation experiments. The results show that the combined procedure of MCB with CRN is the superior tool to reduce the total number of replications needed to ensure the specified probability of correct selection over the finite number of designing systems. In this case study, MCB with CRN reduces the variance by 29% and the number of required replications by 48%. Also, the MCB with CRN procedure narrowed the confidence interval by 18%.

The two calcium sulfate minerals, gypsum and anhydrite, occur in many parts of the world, and gypsum has long been of economic importance in the family of industrial minerals. Gypsum, the dihydrate form of calcium sulfate (CaSO, . 2H20) and anhydrite, the anhydrous form (CaSO,) are frequently found in close association, and it is seldom that a calcium sulfate deposit will consist exclusively of one mineral or the other. Although known gypsum deposits are extensive, anhydrite makes up the larger part of total calcium sulfate resources. Although it has very minor economic use, it is important to the understanding of gypsum deposits and is referred to frequently in the following discussion. Calcium sulfate is one of the principal constituents of evaporite deposits, and when pure, has the following composition: [ ] Deposits of pure gypsum or of pure anhydrite which are large enough to be considered commercial have not yet been found because of both the metastable relationship between the two minerals, and the presence of impurities such as calcium or magnesium carbonates, chlorides, other sulfate minerals, clay minerals, or silica. Most gypsum produced ranges from 80 to 95% pure and beneficiation is normally limited to selective mining or quarrying or upgrading by crushing and screening during mill processing. END USES The largest use for gypsum is based upon the unique property which calcium sulfate has of readily giving up, or taking on, water of crystallization. With the application of a moderate amount of heat in a process known as calcining, gypsum is converted to plaster of paris, the hemihydrate of calcium sulfate (CaSO4 ½ H2O), which when mixed with water will set or harden as the calcium sulfate returns to the stable dihydrate form. This semifinished product, usually called stucco, is then manufactured into a large variety of plasters, wallboard, and block for construction use, or into plasters for industrial applications. About 75% of the gypsum used in the United States is calcined for these purposes. Uses of uncalcined gypsum are principally as a retarder for portland cement, as a soil conditioner, as a mineral filler, and other minor industrial applications. About 25% of the gypsum mined in the United States goes into these markets; however, in other countries with building practices different from those in the United States and Canada, relative usage varies widely. Calcium sulfate deposits are the world&apos;s largest sulfur resources; minor quantities of gypsum and anhydrite have been used to produce sulfur or sulfur compounds. This use is accompanied by a unique site-specific set of economics because sulfur is generally available from non-gypsum sources at lower cost.
