Feeding laterite nickel slurry into high pressure acid­leach (HPAL) autoclaves in an aggressive environment with slurries heated up to 200°C requires a special pump design. For decades the GEHO piston diaphragm pumps have been used for autoclave feeding at gold ore pressure oxidation plants with slurries up to l 77°C. Lessons learned from these installations have been instrumental in designing second generation feed pumps for processing laterite nickel with operating temperatures of 200°C and a flow rate of 400 m3/h. The Australian nickel industry is using momentarily 8 GEHO positive displacement piston diaphragm pumps. For this application six GEHO ZPM 900 "dropleg" pumps have been supplied to the Murrin Murrin project and two to Bulong.

An integrated approach to mine management is presented. A model for achieving the level of control of operations critical to surviving in the current market is outlined. The integrated Production and Cost Management System (PRaCaST) is designed to provide mine managers with a reliable, quantitative, decision-assisting system that can be used in formulating timely responses to complex fluctuations in operations. PRacaST consists of a productivity forecast model, sectional bills of materials containing current resources consumption factors, a linear programming scheduling model, and operations analyses that focus on production and cost performances. The system is applied to an underground coal mine.

A process was developed to treat an ammoniacal leach liquor containing zinc using Di (2-ethyl hexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) as the extractant. The objective of this work was to develop a process package for the treatment of complex sulfide leach liquors. Zinc extraction could not be carried out directly from the ammoniacal solution in mixer-settler units because of crud formation and low extraction efficiency. After neutralizing the free ammonia with H2SO4, the extraction efficiency was only about 40%, due to the high concentration of (NH4)2SO4. To decrease the (NH4)2SO4 concentration, the free NH3 was steam stripped, and the resultant liquor was subjected to zinc solvent extraction. An extraction efficiency of 98% could be achieved by controlling the equilibrium pH. Stripping studies were also optimized after removing ammonia from the zinc-loaded organic. A continuous 100-hr operation that included extraction, scrubbing and stripping, was carried out successfully.

The direct recovery of precious metals from a1kaline cyanide solution is frequently accomplished by the well-established Merrill-Crowe process involving zinc-dust cementation. This is particularly true for silver. Plant data from two operations are presented and analyzed in terms of intrinsic reaction features. In such Merrill-Crowe plants a plate-and-frame filter press acts as a semicontinuous fixed-bed reactor with a distribution of particle retention times. For the plants studied, 99Yo of the silver is recovered with a solution retention time of less than 2 min. Differences in plant operating conditions and product characteristics can be related to the nature of the surface deposit of silver which forms on the zinc particles. From laboratory experiments and plant samples it has been found that the presence of lead in the system activates a change in the silver deposit morphology to the dendritic state which affects the rate of silver deposition as well as the filter cake porosity. Finally the plate-and-frame press is considered from an engineering perspective as a semi- continuous fixed - bed reactor to describe the behavior of the system.

The recovery of apatite from the phoscorite ores occurring in the Transvaal, Republic of South Africa, involves a flotation process that is particularly difficult to characterize from a fundamental point of view. However, the reagents used, (tall oil fatty acid, nonylphenyltetraglycol ether, sodium silicate, and sodium hydroxide) can successfully bring about a separation of apatite from dolomitic calcite, which is the most troublesome gangue component. Recently, it has been demonstrated with some flotation feeds that the addition of certain polysaccharides can improve the flotation significantly. It has been shown that the metallurgy obtained is closely linked to the nature of the froth, and this, in turn, is influenced, often dramatically, by the presence or absence of certain of the reagents. The character of the froth depends less on the inherent frothing ability of these reagents than on the presence or absence of fine mineral particles in the froth, and on their surface characteristics and state of aggregation. The polyglycol ether and the polysacchar- ides have been shown to affect these properties, and it is suggested that a major function of these reagents is to modulate the properties of the fine particles in the pulp, thereby changing the character of the froth and giving rise to improved results.

There are several alternating terminological combinations such as "in situ mining", "borehole mining", "shaftless mining", "mineless mining", "geotechnology" etc.; specific terms denote particular method of unconventional mining technology: "underground coal gasification in situ", "underground coal combustion in situ", "borehole hydraulic coal mining" and others. A vital aspect of environmental impact assessment for surface mining operations is the determination of potential effects on water resources. This topic has been the subject of much recent concern, controversy and legislation. As increasing data become available regarding the types of hydrologic effects that may be anticipated, methods for safe guarding our water resources can be refined. In view of our current energy situation, the need to develop coal re- sources in a timely and economic manner is apparent. The challenge to the mining industry is to develop these resources in a manner that is also compatible with the beneficial use of water resources in mining regions. For this reason, thorough evaluation of the hydrology of potential mining areas in consideration of proposed mining processes and relevant legal criteria is essential. While pre-mining hydrologic investigations often suggest generalized potential effects, a more reliable method for evaluating specific potential effects is to establish and maintain a hydrologic monitoring program. Such a program must be carefully designed to suit the specific project and its location. This paper describes an approach for selection of criteria for designing a monitoring program for a proposed coal surface mining operation and gasification plant in southwest North Dakota. Woodward-Clyde Consultants (WCC), recently prepared an environ- mental impact report for the ANG Coal Gasification Company (ANG), a subsidiary of the American Natural Gas Company. The mining will be carried out by The North American Coal Corporation (NACCO). Preparation of the report provided the opportunity for the development of a sensitive and economical monitoring program which would function as a baseline hydrological data gathering network as well as act an an early detection system for hydrologic effects of the proposed mining.

The financial implications of environmental liabilities are becoming staggering, particularly for mining companies. The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Record of Decision (ROD) list for Superfund mining sites has some pretty hefty financial commitments, such as the $10 million operable unit remedy for the Yak Tunnel at California Gulch (in Colorado) or the $40 to 60 million remediation at Bunker Hill (in Idaho). These costs are driven by the large volume and areal extent associated with historical waste management practices at mining sites. (It's difficult to have a low-cost remedy for a 20-square-mile site.) Unfortunately, there are other ways of generating environmental liabilities besides Superfund, such as non-compliance with Clean Air Act provisions, stormwater permits, or National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits. In the last 2 years, EPA has increased enforcement in its regulatory programs, which has resulted in increased fines and criminal actions. Leaders in other industries (primarily the chemical and manufacturing industries) are viewing environmental liabilities as a strong motivator to select engineering approaches carefully based on technical, legal, economic, and philosophical perspectives. Industry interest in waste minimization programs comes from the concept that it is economically advantageous not to create waste in the first place. Waste minimization programs typically balance increased front-end capital investment with the minimization of potential long-term environmental liabilities as a way to achieve the lowest total-or life-cycle-cost. A side benefit of waste minimization programs is that they tend to improve overall regulatory compliance. Waste management practices are also becoming philosophical, as evidenced by a May 11, 1992, Business Week article: Companies that incorporate innovative thinking on sustainable development will do more than clean up or prevent their own pollution. They'll make and distribute a product more efficiently than ever, worry about its lifelong environmental impact, plan for recycling, and get their suppliers on the bandwagon. This type of approach will require a new mind-set, new tools, and adjustments throughout the organization. A key aspect of waste minimization or life-cycle waste management programs is the incorporation of environmental costs into economic analyses that compare various waste management alternatives. However, the incorporation of environmental costs into an economic analysis can be more difficult than initially thought. As noted above, new tools-or even a new toolbag-are needed, such as new accounting methods that track and assign the true lifetime environmental costs of a particular product. One piece of the new toolbag is life-cycle cost analysis, which is discussed in this paper. To simplify the discussion, this paper looks at the total costs associated with a given mining site. The concepts presented in this paper, however, can be applied to any mine waste management decision. The ultimate extension of life-cycle costing, as presented in the Business Week article, is to include the potential environmental costs throughout the life of a metal. At this point, I am perplexed on why, let alone how, to include the potential downstream environmental costs (i.e., the costs associated with smelting, manufacturing, use, and recycle or disposal) throughout the life cycle of mined copper, lead, or zinc.

An acceptable source of concrete aggregate is available in Kansas City in a continuous, medium bedded, slightly dipping limestone unit. Removal is accomplished in shallow depth, 12 feet to 17 feet high, room and pillar mines. The accepted empirical design spaces 20 foot pillars 60 feet on center. A portion of the 20 foot unit is left in place for roof support. Rock and soil cover is variable to 100± feet maximum. Long-term stability of these mines is affected by numerous factors, including the above mine-rock profile, ground water conditions and mining practice. Crusher-run aggregate sells at the mine for $2.20 per ton, yielding a gross income of $2.00 to $2.80 per square foot of mine. Use of mine space for real estate development requires a new perspective in mine development. Mining practices to obtain long term stabile structures can become an over-riding factor as compared with minimum production costs and maximum extraction ratios. Poorly mined areas are unusuable for secondary purposes. Development cost for lease space in less desirable mines is substantially greater than those planned for a secondary use. Real estate development in mine space involves unique engineering problems. Properly engineered developments offer singular advantages. Warehouse lease space sells for $.50 to $1.00 per square foot per year; fully developed office areas may double these values.

Bromide stabilizes the auric or aurous ion by forming a stable complex in acidic aqueous solution. The oxidizing agent normally used for the process is bromine, which is a corrosive liquid with high vapour pressure. This is, in fact, the main reason why it has not found acceptance yet as an industrial oxidant for gold. Ferric ion with hydrogen peroxide and/or sodium hypochlorite have already proved to be effective oxidants for the dissolution of gold from a rotating disc in a bromide-containing aqueous solution. In the present work, preliminary tests with four selected ore samples were tested to evaluate the dissolution of gold with the same system already tested with the rotating disc (Br-/Fe3+/H2o2/NaCIO). Compared to the conventional cyanidation, results were superior in one instance only. The major obstacle seems to be the maintenance of a suitable potential to allow the complex formation. However, the studied system may be interesting, is in some situations it may yield better results than conventional cyanidation; therefore, further investigation seems to be worth doing.

Bauxite ores in Fokida belong to Parnassus-Giona zone and are found exclusively in limestone in two bauxite horizons, which are of great economic importance and with very unfavorable conditions for the reclamation process. The ore bodies are usually less than two million tones. They are in many cases encountered near the surface as a result of the erosion and are exploited either with open pit or underground methods. Mining activity, which dates back 70 years, causes many changes to the environment and most of all to vegetation and landscape. The first step to mining exploitation of bauxite ores is the selection of an underground or open pit method taking into consideration mostly economical and technical criteria. Open pit exploitation, which causes the most severe environmental consequences, is done with the method of vertical benches in hard rock with the use of explosives. The impacts on the landscape that result from the method of vertical benches are: ? The front of the excavation that is usually solid rock of the hanging wall (limestone). The height of the benches varies from 10 to 20 meters and the gradient of the final slope is designed to be around 65o, unless the rock is not so stable and the gradient is reduced accordingly.

The flotation of sylvite and also some accessory minerals is performed in brines containing very high electrolyte concentrations. Under these circumstances the mechanims of collector adsorption exhibit some characteristics which will be discussed by significant examples: - flotation separation of sylvite and halite with n-alkylammonium salts and n-alkyl sulfates - flotation separation of kieserite and anhydrite with acylamino carboxylic acids - flotation of halite by collectors which are adsorbed by hydrogen bond formation.

The objective of this paper is the development of a reliable simulation model for the operation and production capacity of an aggregates quarry. Based on this model, a computer program is introduced that provides the final production outputs according to the defined material gradation and machinery characteristics. The program takes into consideration all operational parameters that may be introduced by the user through the whole machinery network. As a result, all production parameters are properly updated. The structured simulation program can help detect production inefficiencies that result from design ineffectiveness. Additionally, the program can be used for the generation of alternative scenarios for future modifications of a plant's configuration. Finally, a designer can use it as a tool for obtaining optimum solutions concerning newly designed quarries. As a case study, a quarry operating at Heraklion, Crete, was examined. The application of the program to the plant produced a complete image of the quarry's input/output characteristics, along with some suggestions for improvements on certain production processes.

At some surface and underground mines, control of ground-water inflow involves significant costs. These costs include the capital costs for installing a dewatering system, power and other costs to operate and maintain the system, and costs to treat and dispose of the water that is collected. To minimize these costs, design of a dewatering system utilizing wells has been formulated in terms of a nonlinear operations research problem using quadratic programming. Using this formulation, the locations, depths, pumping rates, and pumping schedules of wells are selected so as to minimize the total costs of the dewatering system.

No1ihwest Alloys produces magnesium from dolomite by reduction with ferrosilicon and aluminum. This process produces alkaline by-products in quantities that allow their consideration for use as commercial products. Two such products are dicalci­um silicate, termed as Di-Cal, and magnesium oxide, termed simply MgO. The alkaline properties of these materials offer acid neutralizing power, comparable to traditionally used lime. Thus, the materials warrant study for their use in various appli­cations where neutralization of acidic waters or process solutions are required. One such application is the treatment of acid mine waters with the objective of removing heavy metals. The chem­ical stabilities of the produced metal precipitates are critically important, from an environmental point of view, for their safe disposal in tailing ponds. The EPA regulates waste material dis­posal according to the results from TCLP testing. In this ongoing study, three mine waters were selected for treatment with Di-Cal and MgO. Lime was used as the control for these experiments. The waters were collected from the Bunker Hill mine, Berkeley Pit, and the Blackbird Mine. In addi­tion to testing the chemical stability of produced metal precipi­tates by the TCLP procedure, two other parameters were studied as well. They are: 1. the effect of water pH on stability, and 2. the effect of pH on the stability of resulting precipitates. In the first three months of study, it was found that neutral­ization with Di-Cal results in precipitates that range from equiv­alent to superior in performance as compared to those produced using lime for the waters from all three mines. An additional beneficial characteristic of precipitation with Di-Cal is the fast filtering characteristics of produced precipitates, when compared to the precipitates produced by lime. This property may be of significance when considering the improvement in drainage of tailing ponds and the volume of solids produced. This paper will discuss in detail the stability of metal precipitates with respect to various pe1iinent metals found in mine waters of Berkeley Pit (Cu, Zn, Mn, etc.), Bunker Hill (Zn, Mn, Ni and Co), and Blackbird Mine (Cu, Co).

Yesterday, air pollution was somebody else's problem -- today, it is everybody's problem. The coal industry with thermal coal drying, is aware of their problem and the necessity of doing an acceptable job; however, there is much to be said as to how good a job is required and what performance limits should be set up. American Air Filter Company has been one of the pioneers in the solution of the thermal coal dryer dust problems, Because of high moisture content, products of combustion and occasional temperature surges, only wet collection has been considered as the practical approach. Our first installation goes back some 12 years with a total to date of 29 Individual wet collectors, each, fabricated of suitable corrosion-resistant material, at 14 operating plants. To eliminate a potential air pollution problem, a performance requirement of not more than approximately one-quarter (1/4) grains per cubic foot in the dust collector discharge was used. In nearly all installations, operating performance surpassed requirements, but discharge stacks were not entirely free of discoloration. However, plant nuisance and air pollution complaints were eliminated. This satisfactory performance was accomplished by medium priced wet dust collectors operating at a 4-6" W.G. pressure drop with cater drain requirements of about 1 gallon of drain water per 1000 cubic feet of air exhausted.

INTRODUCTION The maximum recovery of cleaned coal at the required quality is of major concern to plant operators. However, the quantity and quality of products of coal cleaning, predicted by theoretical calculation based on washability studies and determined in the operation of actual commercial cleaning plants, will be different for each coal. Therefore, during the last half century, coal preparation engineers have repeatedly sought methods for evaluating the technical and economical efficiency of separating coal in coal cleaning equipment and for predicting the quantity and quality of cleaned coal produced, as well as profit- ability for the entire plant. Many formulas have been proposed by investigators to evaluate the efficiency of various coal cleaning operations. Performance criteria in use today are capable of defining all of the important aspects of a given concentrating operation; however, each criterion has certain restrictions or limitations. It is important, therefore, to understand how such formulas can be used and the problems involved in their construction. Technical Measures of Equipment/Plant Performance Conventional measures for evaluating the performance of a preparation plant are generally the same as those used to evaluate equipment performance. Measures involving separation efficiencies are influenced by the following three broadly encompassing primary factors: (1) density composition of the feed coal, (2) design characteristics of the cleaning unit, and (3) relative density of the separation. Since separation efficiencies are dependent on factors involving the nature of the coal, they are termed dependent criteria and represent a very broad technical indicator of an individual process or plant performance. Performance measures known as independent criteria are influenced mainly by quantitative errors inherent in the design and operation of the processing equipment. Economic Measures of Plant Performance True assessment of coal cleaning methods require reference to economic measures such as profitability. During the years in which technical efficiency criteria for characterizing plant performance were being improved, coal preparation engineers were also seeking appropriate economic criteria to assess plant performance. Technical and economic effectiveness of plant performance are important parameters for coal preparation flowsheet design. This paper describes the leaching of gold with Geobrom® 3400 from a very rich (6.2 kg/tonne) black sand concentrate and its subsequent recovery by ion exchange resins and solvent extraction. The dissolution of gold from black sand ranged from 94 to 96%. Gold loadings and recoveries of nearly 100% were achieved by both ion exchange and solvent extraction methods. The kinetics and equilibrium of loading gold onto ion exchange resins and its elution from the resin were studied. The commercial ion exchange resins PAZ®- 4, DOVEX®- 21K, and Amberlite® XAD- 7, and Great Lakes Chemical experimental GLR-30 were evaluated in this work. Diethylene glycol dibutyl ether was used in all the solvent extraction work for gold recovery from Geobrom leach solution. The consumption of Geobrom was about 130 kg per tonne of the concentrate processed. Therefore, the cost of lixiviant to extract 3.11 x l0-2 kg of gold from the black sand was only about $1.00. Based on the electrochemical regeneration of bromine, the economics of bromine process vs. cyanidation were investigated.

This paper will deal with the type of rocks so called evaporites, which are sedimentary rocks produced by water evaporation from seas, lakes or marginal lagoons, in warm and arid climates. Salts derived from these deposits are precipitated according to their solubility; that is, the more soluble precipitates first, overlain by other sediments like silts, shales, limestones, sands, etc. The most common evaporites, according to their chemical composition, are : Chlorides Sulphates Carbonates Nitrates Borates Common salt, or halite, sulphates like anhydrite and gypsum, are the most important. Potassium chloride (silvite and carnalite) and potassium sulphate are of great commercial value.

Metal production has traditionally been a cyclical industry. 1977 in the base metals industry has highlighted that fact with a steady decline in the market place for base metals. Corporate aggregate planning is based on good forecasting and when changing conditions make that forecasting inaccurate, alternate analysis of schedules must be accomplished quickly. The computer is the only medium powerful enough to answer management's questions within an acceptable time frame. Worldwide communications networks now make it possible for the many multinational mining companies to arrive at coordinated corporate production plans based on similar basic data from several producing divisions. The Ontario Div. of Inco Metals Co., a unit of Inco Ltd., encompassed during 1977 14 producing mines, 2 nonproducing mines, 1 nonproducing open pit, 5 flotation mills, I smelter, 2 nickel refineries, 1 copper refinery, and an iron ore recovery plant. Several new mines are under development. Mine production approximates 63 500 tpd (70,000 stpd) from some 1000 workplaces. The need for longrange mine planning and scheduling is obvious and until recently has been satisfied by manual methods. However, while manual methods are often quite practical for a small number of mines, or for mines with relatively short lives, or for mines with only one mining method, the situation in the Ontario Div. is too complex and long-term to allow effective, timely planning by such methods. In 1967, a year after the first computer was installed in the division, work was begun on the computerization of the more than 30,000 borehole logs kept in the mines exploration files with a view to speeding up the assessment of mineral resources. Also in 1967 one of the first substantial systems developed on the main business systems computer was the monthly scheduling of development and production for all mines. This system encompassed tons productions per workplace, feet development per workplace, auxiliary and service activities and the requisite labor for each of these. These two dates are mentioned to show that concurrently with the acquisition of computers in the division there was an early understanding of the importance of automating mine scheduling and planning and of the potential for effective and useful computerization of such activities. In 1970, a pilot program was developed in one of the mines containing a large number of workplaces (350) to schedule the production on a network basis. Varying degrees of interest were shown by the individual mine engineers based on the complexity of the production planning problem at each mine. In an evolutionary process, mines were added to the system as its value became obvious in terms of time saving, flexibility, and accuracy. In 1975, the central mine engineering department decided that the system should be extended to all mines so that a complete division-wide long-range scheduling system would be available upon which to base development and production planning. This system would use basic ore data, allow the addition of scheduling commands, and calculate a schedule for the life of the mine. Many reports could be produced for each mine and all-mine summaries would also be available. The significance of the system can be stated in one phrase-speed, accuracy, and flexibility. Whereas in the past a long-range all mines schedule might have been done once a year, taking from two to three months, now it can be done in a day. The chief mines engineer can incorporate changes in input data and external constraints and call for a "new look" at the long-range schedule to assist him and mines production management in their decision-making processes. Using previous manual methods this could not be done quickly enough to be useful.
