The interactions of mineral-pyrite with T. ferrooxidans were studied by using a cyclic voltametry technique. The interactions with bacteria were carefully examined during the entire growth stage of bacteria (fermentation). Several very important discoveries were made. For example, the pyrite surface invariably drastically changed its properties at the second day of fermentation. Beyond two days of fermentation, the cyclic voltamograms were insensitive to convective diffusion produced by stirring. The SEM study revealed that bacteria populated the pyrite surface at an extremely high density levels. The high density of bacteria, and the solid reaction products formed on the pyrite surface created conditions for pore diffusion which explained why the CVs became insensitive to convective diffusion in solution (stirring).

It is a public university with a 29,792 students in three campuses in the state. The main campus of the University of Sonora is located in the capital city of Hermosillo, which has a population of more than 609,829, in the state of Sonora in the northwestern region of Mexico [1].Despite the fact that in the University of Sonora there were, in the eighties, some projects dealing with environmental issues, there was not until 1992 that the sustainability efforts were really initiated. It happened when the Sustainable Development Group was created in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering as a response to the need for adapting the industrial engineering curricula to the challenge of sustainable development [2]. In order to promote sustainability, it has been necessary to cope and break with several university paradigms. For this reason, the strategy for becoming a sustainable university has continuously evolved throughout the years from a simple structure composed by individual and isolated projects to a systematic and integrative Sustainability Management System. Thanks to this evolution, the University of Sonora has won a respectable reputation in the greater community and it is seen in the region as an icon of sustainability promoter. In this sense, the substantives functions of education, research, and outreach and partnership, which are considered supportive and integrative, have also evolved to play a key role for the success of sustainability initiatives.The institution has followed four avenues for becoming a sustainable university; education, research, outreaching and partnership and greening the campus [3]."

The paper presents results of physical and turbulent three-dimensional numerical simulation of the gas flow in the wind box and reaction shaft of the concentrate burner of a flash furnace. Physical simulation work was carried out in a 1:5 linear scale model, where the velocity field was measured using a Pitot tube. The mathematical model consists of the three-dimensional averaged Navier-Stokes equations, turbulent kinetic energy and dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy using the Renormalization Group (RNG) theory for the k-e turbulence model. Computations were performed using FLUENT, based in a finite- volume code. The geometry of the concentrate burner was separated in two sections: wind box and reaction tower. Results obtained at the exit of the wind box were used as boundary conditions for the reaction shaft. The effect of boundary conditions on the numerical results was also studied. Results of physical and numerical simulations show an asymmetry of the velocity field at the exit of wind box. This asymmetry is possibly due to existence of a separated flow in the back of the exit ring. The agreement of physical and numerical results assess the capacity of the turbulence RNG k-e model to reproduce correctly the behaviour of the velocity field at the exit of the concentrate burner.

Furnace superalloy was applied in harsh environment within the erosion of high temperature and oxidizing atmosphere. With plasma powder surfacing technology, iron-based alloy powder was sprayed on the surface of 310S stainless steel to form oxidation layer that increases the oxidation resistance and reduces the cost of materials. With optimum technological parameters, in this paper, oxidation test of 100 hours on iron-based cladding alloy and furnace alloy were carried out at 1200 . The technique of XRF, XRD and EDS were used to characterize composition, oxide morphologies and surface mechanical properties. The results showed that Element composition of cladding layer formed by Plasma powder surfacing was well distributed. Its oxidation weight gain rate of 100 hours was 0.4552g/m2h, belonged to antioxidant level. The oxidation weight gain rate of furnace alloy was 1.4617g/m2h, belonged time-antioxidant level. And on the mechanical comparison test, surfacing alloy is relatively excellent than furnace alloy.

"In this paper, the photochemical catalysis degradation effect of photocatalyst obtained by charcoal-supported nano TiO2 (nano TiO2 / charcoal) on the formaldehyde in the air was studied. The influences of the nano-TiO2 loading and the photoreactor structure on the efficiency of photochemical catalysis degradation of formaldehyde was reviewed.The nano - TiO2 / bamboo charcoal adsorption of formaldehyde, as well as the influences of a certain amount of formaldehyde after adsorption on its photochemical catalysis effect were discussed. The sol preparation process of Ce-doped nano-TiO2 was described. Experimental results indicated that: the surface of bamboo Charcoal still has a strong formaldehyde adsorption capacity after Supported by Nano TiO2.After adsorbing formaldehyde, the photochemical catalysis degradation efficiency of formaldehyde of the catalyst at a steady state is basically the same with new prepared catalysts’. When the thickness of the catalyst layer of the multi-ladder-type structure photoreactor is 2mm, the interval is 20mm, the absorption efficiency of formaldehyde of Nano- TiO2 / bamboo charcoal is the best . Nano-TiO2 undoped Ce responded with no degradation of formaldehyde after 2 hours, while the degradation rate of formaldehyde of the Ce-doped nano- TiO2 reached 15% 2 hours late, and the formaldehyde decontamination of the equipment reached 94%.IntroductionEmerging out of home decoration in the distribution of formaldehyde, benzene, ammonia and other indoor pollutants have been proved to be very harmful to the human body. Photocatalysis can eliminate air pollutants, in particular, can effectively degrade the air volatile organic compounds, it is a new method of air purification developed in recent years. the biggest advantage of photochemical catalysis degradation is green, this method can be available at normal temperature and pressure to degrade formaldehyde and other organic matter into carbon dioxide and water without secondary pollution.Nano-TiO2 have become the most studied photocatalyst due to its stable, non-toxic harmless, superior photochemical catalysis properties [1]. Initially nano-TiO2 powder was used as a photocatalyst, but it’s difficult to recover and easy to wear and tear [2,3]. Later, the TiO2 was used in the form of film loaded on some carriers, such as glass beads [4]. As the photochemical catalysis reaction occurred on the catalyst surface, only the organic matter adsorbed on the catalyst surface can be degraded, so the catalyst was requested that must have a strong adsorption. Combined the adsorption properties of bamboo charcoal and the photochemical catalysis activity of nano-TiO2 together. Made the photocatalyst by loading the nano-TiO2 on bamboo charcoal to degrade organic matter in the air. Nano-TiO2 semiconductor photocatalyst has a strong catalytic oxidation due to the photo generated hole of the surface [5,6],and has a potential application. Some studies have shown that nano-TiO2 photocatalysis activity can be increased by doping certain metal ions [7,8].The aim of our work in this study was to use bamboo charcoal load Ce-doped nano-TiO2 photochemical catalysis oxidation to degrade formaldehyde,and design a multi-ladder structure photoreactor, also prove the availability of the device from the theoretical and experimental."

Since 'start-up of the larger Mitsubishi Continuous Copper Smelting Process in 1991, furnace relining campaign was gradually prolonged to once every 2 years according to deregulation of governmental boiler inspection. On the other hand, in 1998 Naoshima smelter embarked on an intermediate strategic expansion plan to strengthell its international competitiveness. As part of this plan, modifications were implemented in the copper smelter designed to increase output of anodes from new charge source to 270,000 tpa. In May 1998, treatment of dried neutralized residue was started in C furnace, and during the shutdown for brick relining in April 1999, intensive modifications to the boilers as well as the installation of new spray coolers for furnace off gas treatment were implemented. Finally, the new larger oxygen plant was commenced its operation in May 2000 and the expansion was achieved around 30% increase of anode production from original design.

Copper-nickel-sulphide ores mined in the Rustenburg district of South Africa are generally smelted in electric furnaces because of the high-temperature slag produced, the availability of cheap electric power, and the smaller pollution problems. Apart from melting, the functions of the electric furnace are to recover most of the matte content in the converter slag by physical and chemical interaction with the furnace bath and to provide adequate time for the optimum separation of matte and slag. Smooth, efficient operation will denend on fluid slags for settling, balanced by high resistivities to obtain adequate concentration and distribution of power by way of current heating. To obtain a greater understanding of the processes involved, an investigation was undertaken at Rustenburg Platinum Mines on the smelting of copper-nickel concentrates in a 19.5 MVA furnace with six in-line electrodes. The matte- and slag-tapping temperatures, slag temperatures, slag analyses, electrical data, and electrode position were measured. Radioactive tracers were introduced into the slag, and quantitative results relating to the flow pattern within the furnace were obtained. These studies were augmented by scaled laboratory investigations relating to the determination of cell constants and current distribution within the furnace. Instantaneous field and power distribution plots were determined by use of an on-line mini-computer. The applicability of these results to furnace operation is discussed.

In this talk, we review highlights of x-ray magnetic scattering studies performed during the last decade, concentrating at the beginning on experiments on the rare earth metal holmium.(1-4) Besides intrinsic interest in the x-ray scattering cross-section and its description, studies of this type are motivated by the possibility that new structural and magnetic properties of rare earth metals might be revealed, and that new techniques may thereby be developed. As a result, interest in x-ray magnetic scattering experiments. has grown rapidly during the last 10 years particularly, with the regular application of synchrotron radiation techniques- Magnetic scattering experiments have by now been performed at most of the x-ray synchrotrons around the world. In addition, insertion .device beamlines dedicated to x-ray magnetic scattering experiments are planned at each of the next-generation storage rings presently under construction in the United States (APS), Europe (ESRF), and Japan (SPRING-8). Generally, the results of x-ray magnetic scattering experiments may be analyzed within two regimes of the incident x-ray energy, namely, in the limit of high x-ray energies, when the incident x-ray energy lies above the excitation energy of any absorption edge, and at resonance, when the incident energy lies near an absorption edge. In the high energy limit, the amplitude for x-ray magnetic scattering has the simple form [L(Q)?A + S(Q)?B](5-7) Here, L(Q) and S(Q) refer to the Fourier 'transforms of the atomic orbital and spin magnetization densities, respectively, and the vectors A and B depend on the incident and scattered wavevectors and on the: incident and scattered polarization vectors. 7) Because the vectors A and B are not identical, the polarization dependence of the orbital contribution to the magnetic cross-section differs from that of the spin contribution. This leads to the possibility that the orbital and spin magnetization densities maybe distinguished, in x-ray scattering experiments. The same distinction is not directly possible by neutron diffraction techniques (in dipole approximation, where the polarization dependence of the orbital contribution is identical to that of the spin contribution), and is important to a fundamental understanding of the electronic structure of magnetic materials. Kambara Reactor (KR) consists of a ladle where pig iron is stirred by an impeller during addition of a flux powder. The objective is to improve agitation leading to dispersion, of the flux powder, in the molten pig iron in order to improve desulfurization of the liquid melt by improving solid liquid interaction. The life of the impeller is limited as it is subjected to abrasion at high temperatures. The shape and design of the impeller also has an effect on the performance of this reactor. A 1:7 scale cold model of a KR unit of the Companhia Siderurgica de Tuberao ,one of the integrated steel plants in Brazil was constructed in order to evaluate the mixing and mass transfer conditions. Mixing efficiency was investigated by tracer additions and subsequent measurement of conductivity. Mass transfer in the reactor was assessed through iodine transfer between water and kerosene and employing a macroscopic model. Mixing depends on impeller shape and depth of immersion The role of dispersion is highlighted by faster kinetics when impeller velocity is increased. The results enable assessment of design aspects of the impeller on the process.

"Fibers extracted from the ramie plant have been traditionally used in textile and are now being considered as polymeric composite reinforcement owing to their superior strength. Recently the mechanical behavior of ramie fiber reinforced polyester composites was investigated but no significant improvement was found. Therefore, the objective of this work was to carry out a similar investigation by changing the type of polymeric matrix. Specimens with up to 30% in volume of ramie fibers incorporated into epoxy were bend-tested until fracture. The results showed a moderate improvement with a tendency of decreasing stress for higher amounts of ramie fibers due to the weak interface developed with the epoxy matrix.IntroductionThe engineering application of natural fibers extracted from cellulose-containing vegetables, also recognized as lignocellulosic fibers, is presently considered an environmentally correct alternative to replace more expensive, non recyclable and energy-intensive synthetic fibers [1-3]. In fact, composites reinforced with traditional fibers such as coconut, sisal, jute, hemp, etc ... are already on the market in substitution for common glass fiber automobile components [4-6]. Even less known fibers like curaua from the Amazon region are being industrially used [7]. Economical and environmental reasons sustain a promising future trend for natural fiber composites. In comparison with the less expensive glass fiber among energy-intensive synthetics, lignocellulosic fibers are approximately five times cheaper. For the current situation of our planet, natural fibers are regarded as ""green"" environmentally friendly materials. They are abundant, renewable, biodegradable, and recyclable, above all, neutral with respect to carbon dioxide emission, associated with global warming.Several relatively unknown lignocellulosic fibers such as piassava [8], sponge gourd [9], sugar cane bagasse [10], buriti [11] and ramie [12], with simple and limited applications, or just byproducts, are now being investigated for their potential as composite reinforcement. This could widen the offer of new lignocellulosic fibers for composite reinforcement. The banana fiber, in particular, has a tensile strength around 700 MPa [13], which is comparable to the strongest lignocellulosic fibers used as composite reinforcement.In addition to polyester, the epoxy is another relatively strong polymer used as composite matrix. Therefore, the objective of the present work was to assess the mechanical properties obtained by flexural test, for epoxy composites reinforced with different amounts of banana fibers."

The problem of treating concentrates with increasingly higher levels of arsenic and antimony is compounded by the trend to stricter environmental guidelines regarding the disposal of smelter wastes. Much of the arsenic and antimony from non-ferrous processes is recovered as oxide fume. The options for handling these fumes include recycling them to the smelter, stabilising and disposing of them, and recovering values from them. Whilst arsenic oxide has little value, there is a market for antimony oxide and this provides an incentive for devising techniques for separating antimony oxide from arsenic oxide before disposal of the arsenic oxide. Arsenic can be separated from antimony oxide by selectively volatilising the more volatile arsenic trioxide from a mixed oxide sample or by selectively condensing the less volatile antimony tetroxide at high temperatures, leaving arsenic trioxide to condense out at lower temperatures. The results of selective volatilisation experiments at 379 to 587 °C indicate that it is difficult to achieve an arsenic content below 5.0 wt.% using air or nitrogen as carrier gas due to the formation of solid solutions between the two oxides. Injection of oxygen into a mixed vapor stream improved separation by selective condensation and antimony tetroxide containing as low as 0.23 wt.% was obtained in laboratory experiments.

The tribological load is the load on forging tools resulting from the relative motions between the plastically deformed workpiece and the die. In comparison to many other forming processes hot die forging has an especially disadvantageous tribological system. The advantages of the application of hard coatings, which are well known for cutting tools, are to a much lesser extent explored for casting, extrusion, molding and forging tools. Increasing the lifetime of these tools is an important task in surface engineering because of the complex loading conditions and often complicated tool geometry. The plasma-assisted chemical-vapor-deposition (PACVD) technique is well suited to depositing hard coatings onto large dies and molds. The aim of this study is to present and discus results obtained on a duplex PACVD hard coating in an industrial application like the hot forging of automotive parts. A new generation of vacuum-melted and remelted (VMR) hot-work tool steels has been developed; these can reach a hardness of 58 HRc, and have a fracture toughness at this hardness equivalent to that of standard hot-work tool steels at 45 HRc. This offers one of two advantages: the steels can be used at the higher hardness to provide resistance to wear or deformation, or, when used at a hardness of 47?49 HRc for hot forging, to provide temper resistance, nitriding behavior and adhesive wear resistance. The results presented here are from a preliminary investigation. The experimental results indicate that the introduction of a proper duplex PACVD hard coating will lead to an improved wear resistance and a longer lifetime for the hot-forging dies. Furthermore, by using a hard, low-friction coating excellent anti-sticking properties can be obtained. At this stage of the investigation it is also necessary to carry out pilot trials to determine the wear resistance and the tool life in practice.

"The influence of microstructural defects on strength in Si3N4 is reviewed. The presence of cracks, pores and inclusions greatly affects the strength of Si3N4. The micron order crack size and distribution were quantified by micrographic technique. The observed defect size was range from 4 µm to 28 µm.The density of defect increases as the defect size decreases. The correlation between defects size and density was better represented on the logarithmic graph. The correlation was linier. IntroductionFracture in ceramics materials occurs from. In order to understand the relationship between strength and defects, it is necessary to examine the fracture process quantitatively.1In this study, the micrographic technique is used to determine the defects size and distribution in Si3N4. The observed data will be used to predict the material strength by using fracture mechanics rnodel.2Experimental ProcedureThe sintered Si3N4 specimens ( SNl, Japan Fine Ceramics Center) were sliced into 1mm thick . The both sides of specimen surface were polished into by using diamond slurries with particle size down to 2µm. The final thickness was 0.045 mm. The optical microscope (NIKON OPTIPHOT02-POL) was used to observed the internal defects with transmission mode. The reflection mode was used to determine the surface defects, so that the internal defect could be distinguished from surface defect. The measurement and counting was taken on the micrograph and the longest part of the defect was measured as the defect size. The size density distribution of internal defect is taken."

"Because of high cost and shortage of primary resources of Ni-base superalloys, revert alloys can be used as a part of charging materials for production of superalloys ingots. The current study is based on recycling of IN738LC, a Ni-base superalloy, using 30% and 50% reverted alloy and balanced amount of virgin raw materials. Therefore, it has been attempted to cast an alloy with references to standard chemical composition and mechanical properties. After charging and casting in vacuum melting furnaces, chemical composition verification and non-destructive tests (i.e. Penetration and Radiography Tests), quality of samples were evaluated at elevated temperature by stress-rupture test. Results acquired from chemical composition and mechanical test indicate that cast ingots using 30% and 50% reverted alloy is reliable and consistent with the quality control requirements.IntroductionIn recent years, there have been many fluctuations in cost and availability of raw materials which are extremely determining in Ni-base superalloys production. Accessibility to the high purity metals such as Cobalt, Molybdenum, Tantalum, Niobium and etc. have been problematical during the past decades. Therefore, shortages of critical raw materials beside the economical considerations motivated the alloy suppliers and investigators to study and find alternate sources such as reclamation and recycling of scraps [1].There are a lot of reasons for the necessity of recycling; perhaps the most justifiable one is that consumers themselves produce scraps. For example, the weight of a finished superalloy product could be less than one-third of the cast alloy weight and in the case of complicated machined parts; this portion may reach to one-tenth [2]. High values of constituents, reduction of energy consumption and environmental concerns have all strengthened the obligation of recycling in Ni-base superalloys.Because of the high degree of risk in usage of improper materials for production of turbine blades, a delicately controlled program for recycling is needed. Depending on the type of scraps, this program can define the recycling procedure, required instruments, allowable percentage of scrap for usage and finally confidence level of the process."

In 1997 Pasminco's Port Pirie Lead Smelter began a modernisation of its lead and precious metals refinery operations. Driven by the anticipated closure of its Broken Hill mine, the new refining process replaced the locally developed continuous process, which had been in operation since the 1950's. Commissioning of the new plant was staged, beginning in late 1997, and finishing early in 1999. The new plant provides for batch refining of lead, and the use of vacuum induction retorting and bottom blown oxygen cupel technology in the silver refining area. The project has resulted in an increase of lead production capacity of 11% and allows the treatment of a wider range of concentrates than was formerly possible. The most significant change has been to double the smelter's silver capacity to over 400 tonnes per annum. This paper describes the successful implementation and optimisation of the new refinery, which is now consistently meeting design capacity.
