At Trail, British Columbia, Cominco's zinc leaching and solution purification processes include direct pressure leaching of zinc concentrates, leaching of fume from the lead smelter, leaching of calcine and electrolyte purification. These processes have been adapted to match the unique characteristics of Cominco's integrated zinc and lead operations. Recent modifications include changes to the purification process and iron-residue handling circuits. In 1997, a new five-compartment autoclave, complete with ancillary equipment, was installed in the pressure leaching plant. This paper discusses these changes, the current flowsheet and further improvements.

"This paper describes the application of Raman Spectroscopy for characterizing superconducting YBCO thin film parameters. Attenuation of the substrate Raman spectrum as a function of material deposited is established. Also a correlation between film quality and Raman spectrum is explored. The identification and discrimination of superconducting and non-superconducting phases of YBCO is presented. The critical temperature (Tc) of a film as a function of its oxygen content is also established using Raman peak ratios. These results provide significant implications toward the use of Raman Spectroscopy for in situ monitoring and control of the PLD process. Film quality can be controlled via optimization of film oxygen content and reduction of improper YBCO phases. Film thickness can be controlled by monitoring the response of the substrate material. Also the PLD process can be studied and modeled using this powerful observation tool.IntroductionSuperconductors are materials that possess unique characteristics when cooled to sufficiently low temperatures. Below a material's critical temperature (Tc) it exhibits zero resistance to current flow. One such material, yttrium barium copper oxide (YBCO) has a critical temperature of approximately 92° K. Due to its high critical temperature YBCO is being aggressively researched for many possible applications, because of high current carrying capability and strong pinning of flux lines.YBCO in the 123 form is a ceramic material that was discovered in February, 1987. Its unit cell structure is shown in Figure 1 [ 1,2]."

"With the rapid development of iron and steel industry, the supply of iron ores can not meet the present demand for iron and steel industry in China. Large reserves of oolitic hematite have been discovered with low iron grade (30% ~ 45%) and high phosphorus content (0.4% ~ 1.8%). Traditional processes for utilization of this ore are characterized as either high cost or low dephosphorization. In this study, sodium salts-modified paigeite (SSMP) was added to enhance on the dephosphorization of high-phosphorus oolitic hematite by using reduction roasting followed by magnetic separation. Various parameters, including the amount of SSMP, reduction time,reduction temperature, grinding fineness and the magnetic field intensity were investigated. As a consequence, a magnetic concentrate of metallic iron powder with total iron grade of 93.2% and phosphorus content of 0.08% was obtained under the optimal conditions. The results also provide a potential avenue for the comprehensive utilization of paigeite ore.IntroductionOolitic hematite is currently recognized as one of the most refractory iron ore resources in the world. Over 4.0 billion tons of reserves of such resources have been found in China, and more than 10 billion tons in the long-term. This kind of ore is characterized as low iron grade (30%~45% TFe) and high phosphorus content (0.4%~1.8% P), as well as fine particle size distribution of ferrous minerals (the size distribution varies from 5~30 µm, even less than 2 µm) and the complex association between iron and other gangue elements [1~5]. The unique structural characteristics of the high phosphorus oolitic hematite make it difficult to obtain high iron recovery and good dephosphorization efficiency by using the conventional processes [1,2]. "Brazil has a large agricultural potential and its production success is related to the chemicaland physical soil characteristics. Therefore, the demand in the use of a great quantity offertilizers to compensate the low amount of nutrients in the soil includes about 40% of foodproduction costs. In order to develop economical alternatives to traditional fertilizers, rockswith potential use in agriculture will be studied. In this work the potassium rock, a greensandslate, will be chemically and structurally characterized for the development of a potassiumthermophosphate. This alternative fertilizer will be obtained based on a fusion of a ponderedmixture of potassium, magnesium and phosphate rocks to be applied in the Brazilianagriculture. In early 1998, Phelps Dodge embarked upon a program to investigate alternative technology for the extraction and recovery of copper, and other metal values, from copper concentrates. A review of all of the available process alternatives indicated that many were unsuitable for large-scale commercial application and others were clearly targeted at niche applications where contaminants (and consequently smelter penalties) were driving the decision-making. The result of this development program is the world?s first commercial application of high temperature pressure leaching of chalcopyrite concentrate at Bagdad, Arizona, which was commissioned in the second quarter of 2003. Other related processes are in various stages of development. In addition to the obvious considerations, the economic aspects of this technology have been considered in detail at each step in the development of the program. The technology developments in this area are reviewed with emphasis on the economic viability and commercial application.

In this symposium, research in the area of energy conversion is presented. This symposium has special significance, as we honor three prominent scientists from hydrogen storage research and development field. In this symposium, the majority of papers presented by international scientists and engineers are in the area of hydrogen storage. Other energy conversion papers include magnetic materials, superconductors, and thermal energy storage materials. Recent developments in light-weight high gravimetric hydrogen density hydrides have led to potential use of hydrides for onboard automobile and other applications. This, of course, is significant from environmental concerns of CO2 and other emissions from the current use of carbon based fuels in automobiles. Thus, it is becoming increasingly important to switch to cleaner alternative fuels such as hydrogen [1]. The Challenge of Vehicular Hydrogen Storage as potential hydrogen energy carriers for vehicular applications, with a driving range of approximately 300 miles, require ~5-13 kg of hydrogen stored on-board. In the United States, Centers of Excellence have been established in metal hydrides, chemical hydrides, and carbon-based materials, and abundant scientific and industrial research is being carried on metal hydrides; only some of the current research from the Centers will be reported here. The European commission, Japan Institutions, and others also have numerous hydrogen storage programs in progress. Several international collaborations have also begun between IEA and IPHE scientists to accelerate the progress of development of practical hydrides. A summary of the abstracts is included in this overview.

Kinetic modeling is very important to understand steelmaking reactions. The coupled reaction model proposed by Prof. D.G.C Robertson is the best suited program, and therefore, the author has applied it to the various steelmaking reactions, a few examples of which are discussed. Hot metal dephosphorization occurs under non-equilibrium conditions as it takes place between the slag, which has a high oxygen potential, and the hot metal, which has a low oxygen potential. A process simulation model based on the coupled reaction model was constructed. This model considers the solid and liquid slag, liquid metal phases, and the reaction between the solid and liquid slag, besides the reaction between the liquid slag and liquid metal. Using this model, the ruling factor to increase the reaction efficiency of dephosphorization has been verified. In the secondary refining process, the values of inclusion composition calculated by the thermodynamic model, under the assumption of equilibrium with the metal composition, were found to be different from those observed in practice. A kinetic model, incorporating the reactions between slag, metal, inclusion, and refractory has been postulated, and the composition change of inclusion during treatment has been analyzed.

"Under the 4-in-1 recycling system, Taiwan producers and importers who using packaging containers have responsibility to pay the recycling fees for recycling the waste packaging containers they produced or imported; while the collectors/recycling plants who collect/sort/recover waste packaging containers receive subsidy for conducting recycling. A reasonable pricing for recycling charge and subsidy is a way for sustainability of the recycling. The objective of this study is to provide an amending mechanism for product charge and recycling subsidy in response to the social economic changes. This study employs a regression analysis and cost adjusting model to link the factors used for calculating product charge and recycling subsidy on recycling waste packaging containers with socio-economic indicators, raw material prices, wholesale prices, and secondary material prices. Study results provide estimated models to EPA in Taiwan for amending product charge and recycling subsidy in response to the social economic changes.IntroductionUnder ""4-in-1"" recycling system in Taiwan, waste packaging containers are officially announced to be recycled. The waste packaging containers announced to be recycled include iron cans, aluminum cans, glass bottles, plastic containers, paper containers, aluminum foiled paper packs. In order to compensate the recycling system, EPA charges associated manufacturers and importers for recycling fee and subsidies recyclers to create the economic incentive for raising recycling performance. Basically, the budget for subsidy recyclers is from the recycling charge. That means if we want to increase recycling efficiency by increasing subsidy to recyclers then the manufacturers and importers have to pay more for reaching financial balance of recycling foundation. The benefit of recyclers and fee payers are always conflicted. The recycling charge and subsidy is thus argued by fee payers and subsidy receivers all the time. A reasonable pricing for recycling charge and subsidy is the only way to keep the recycling system sustainable. Moreover, a suitable mechanism has to be changed along with the changing social economic condition. The recycling performances and effectiveness of this recycling system is also highly dependent on the pricing mechanism. This study intends to provide an amending mechanism for product charge and recycling subsidy in response to the social economic change. Related previous studies about recycling system in Taiwan with its performance include Hsu and Kuo (2002, 2005), Bor, Chien, and Hsu (2004) and Hsu (1999). Hsu and Kuo [1] estimated total production values of recycling and evaluated the performance of recycling performance based upon the estimated production values."

Japanese non-ferrous industry introduced large-scale smelting plants along seashores for overseas concentrates with increasing demand of metals around 1970s. Although serious environmental pollution became obvious, with economic growth, the industry got rid of pollution by installing new processes and improving operation technologies. At present, over 99.8% of sulfur input to smelters is fixed as stable compounds. Through those decades Japan had steep rises of oil prices, sudden change of exchange rate, and inadequate treating charges, we were faced to consider the closure of smelters. The industry has survived by increasing productivity, saving energy and reducing manpower. Furthermore the industry made great effort to recycle valued metals from scraps and wastes for the resources-recycling society. Academic research also contributes to support these individual technologies. Thus the industry has fostered world-acclaimed technologies in terms of efficiency and energy conservation. This paper presents technology development and environmentally-benign sulfide smelting processes.

Extraction of zinc(II) from hydrochloric acid solutions is discussed. The literature on the extraction of zinc(II) in the presence of iron(III) and iron(II) with various basic and solvating reagents has been reviewed. It was found that tributyl phosphate (TBP) is the best compromise, and permits both effective extraction of zinc(II) and its stripping with water. The process was confirmed in a continuous laboratory mixer-settler circuit.

Iron sulphate jarosite through which iron in zinc sulphide concentrate feed is removed from the production circuit of conventional roast-leach-electrowin process, is chemically unstable and environmentally hazardous even if it is mixed with lime. If zinc silicate ore is used at similar chemical conditions in place of calcine in the jarosite precipitation, the resultant silico-jarosite residue having been mixed with lime is chemically stable and environmentally friendly. The recovery of zinc from silicate ore is also higher than that from calcine.

In 1999, Molymex S.A. de C.V. (Molymex), Mexico. (a company wholly owned by Molibdenos y Metales S.A. (Molymet), Chile) decided to install the Haldor Topsrae Wet gas Sulphuric Aicd (WSA) process for cleaning of the 4-5% SO2 off-gas from their molybdenum sulphide master in Cumpas, Mexico to produce sulphuric acid. The decision to install a WSA plant was based on the successful operation of a WSA plant at Molymet's molybdenum sulphide roaster in Santiago, Chile since 1993. This paper describes the process layout of the Cumpas plant, the operating experience of the Santiago plant, and the, differences in. process design between the two plants. It will furthermore summarise the applications of the WSA process for other roasting plants and smelters within the non-ferrous. metals industry producing metals such as copper, lead, and molybdenum.

"The characterization of the surface roughness of the mineral particles is of vital importance for the studies of the mineral processing. In this study, an evaluation of the roughness of the iron ore particles, with the measurements of size distribution and the measurements of specific surface area with the liquid nitrogen absorption, was developed. The main theory of this method is the fact that the roughness of the particle influences the specific surface area apparently. The specific surface area of the particles can be measured with the laser diffraction method and the liquid nitrogen absorption method. The influence of the surface roughness of the particle can be measured with the nitrogen absorption and cannot be measured with the laser diffraction. Therefore, the roughness can be got by comparing the specific surface area with two measurement methods.IntroductionThe characterization of the surface roughness of the mineral particles is of vital importance for the studies of the mineral processing. There are three main methods for measuring the size distribution of mineral particles: sieving, laser diffraction, and sedimentationl). Many techniques involve sedimentation such as the Horiba2, 3) and the Cyclo-sizer1). In the mineral industry, size distribution is usually determined by sieving because it can be carried out accurately for all particle sizes larger than 45 . The preferred method to obtain the size distribution of finer particles is laser diffractometry. The technique has several advantages: it produces measurements in a few minutes with considerably less labor compared with the cyclo-sizer and for a range of sizes considerably wider in comparison with the sedigraph4). The equivalent-sphere size distribution reported by laser diffractometry is valid for metallurgical calculations and can be routinely used in mineral processing plants. The surface area of the particles can be measured by the BET method of nitrogen adsorption, or it can be calculated from the size distribution. However, the latter calculation requires the size distribution to be accurately known across the whole size range, and assumptions have to be made about the shapes and surface roughness of the particles and presence or absence of pores (see below). The BET method is based on the physical adsorption of gas over the whole exposed surface area and measures the surface area stemming from the roughness and open pores on the surface of the particle5). The calculation of the surface area from the size distribution is usually based on the assumption that all the particles are smooth spheres, without considering the shape and/or roughness of the particles. Determining the surface roughness of the particle with these methods, is the objective of this study."

For the purification of quarry waters from copper and their further utilization a three-sectional electrochemical reactor is constructed providing the extraction of 90-95% copper as a self-loosing powder from the quarry water running as a steady flow. Four variations of the integrated processing of quarry water are developed and their relative technical and economical parameters are calculated. The detailed technological scheme is given for the variant that is the most profitable for Georgia.
