"In the present study, different types of cathode ray tube (CRT) glasses were examined by sequential extraction combined with TCLP to provide possible explanations for how Pb and Ba leach out from the waste CRT glasses and to give possible reasons for why they leach out. Sequential extraction results showed that Pb and Ba in the CRT glasses dominanfly presented as the residual fraction. The exchangeable fractions of Pb and Ba were extremely low, less than 0.01 % of the total content, but they were higher than those required by the regulation limits, 5 and 100 mg/L for Pb and Ba, respectively. TCLP tests of the original CRT glasses and CRT glasses residues after each step of sequential extraction demonstrated that the extremely high leaching toxicity of CRT glasses mainly caused by its exchangeable and carbonate fractions of Pb and Ba.IntroductionIn recent years, the amount of cathode ray tube (CRT) contained monitors or TV sets in the market were sharply reduced, since they were substituted by novel and better electronic and electric equipments such as LCD and PDP, leaving huge amount of end-of-life CRTs. 50-85% of the total weight of this kind of computer monitor or a TV set is glass[1,2], which was classified to three categories according to their chemical compositions: black & white glass (BW), color panel glass (CP) and color funnel glass (CF)[3]. In order to provide shielding from X-rays generated during the picture projection process, lead, barium and strontium oxides were used in the glass. In general, a color CRT contains 1.6-3.2 kg of lead . Therefore, these glasses have attracted wide and tense attention due to the potential risk to the environment and human health."

"1. AbstractMagnesium alloys have been successfully recycled for decades and have won acceptance for use by die casters and most of the automotive industry. As the supply chain for magnesium and magnesium alloys continues to change, due to the consolidation of producers, it is essential that quality control methods be closely examined with each new supplier added. An examination of the various process steps that are needed to assure quality in the final product will be discussed thus giving a basis for the auditing of new magnesium suppliers.2. IntroductionMagnesium recycling in the past has been somewhat limited due to its use more as an alloying agent for aluminum based alloys and as a desulfurization agent in iron and steel than in more readily recycled structural products. Recycling efforts continue to improve as more production is finding its way into automotive structural components, hand tools, and a variety of computer and cellular telephone applications.With the closure of several large North American primary magnesium production facilities over the past decade we have only recently witnessed a tightness in supply that is driving magnesium prices significantly higher, nearly doubling the price in the last year alone. The rapid escalation in pricing will provide additional economic incentives to fully utilize recycling for the recovery of an even greater percentage of both old and new sources of magnesium scrap. Political pressure continues to intensify towards the secondary recovery of any and all recoverable resources of which magnesium recycling readily applies.Economics will also likely drive the development of new sources of magnesium production, both from primary and secondary production. As new sources of magnesium are offered to the marketplace the potential for product quality issues may increase. When considering any new raw material supplier a decision must be made as to the impact of defective material on the intermediate or finished product. Quality defects in magnesium ingot can result in a variety of appearance, corrosion, and even adverse structural effects in the finished product. The potential severity of the impact of defective raw materials on the finished product will determine and often justify a close look at any new supplier. An on-site audit of a new supplier of a critical raw material is often justified to ensure that an adequate quality assurance system is in place. We will now look at a number of key production points that should be examined during an on-site audit that have can have an impact on the overall quality of the finished product."

Calcium treatment of alumina inclusions, to convert the alumina to molten or partially molten calcium aluminates, is a well-established treatment for steel, to improve the castability of aluminium-killed steel. However, the role of magnesium in calcium-treated steel is not fully clear, nor is the origin of the several percent of magnesium oxide that is often present in calcium-treated inclusions. To study this, steel was sampled after calcium treatment at an industrial steel plant, and the inclusions identified by energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX) on polished sections of the samples (analysing the samples in a scanning electron microscope). The predicted fraction liquid in the inclusion was estimated from the ternary alumina-magnesia-lime phase diagram. Inclusions with higher CaO contents generally had lower MgO contents, indicating that the calcium wire is not the origin of the magnesium in the inclusions; this was also confirmed by wet chemical analysis of the calcium wire. Instead, it appears that magnesium-alumina spinel inclusions form during extended ladle contact after aluminium killing and before calcium treatment. While such spinels have been stated to cause poor castability (clogging the submerged-entry nozzle), it is clear that calcium treatment successfully modifies the spinel inclusions to mixed alumina-lime-magnesia inclusions, where the magnesia content contributes substantially to liquefaction of the inclusions: for typical MgO contents of around 10%, the range of Ca:O ratios which yield liquid (or partially liquid) inclusions is extended substantially to lower Ca:O ratios.

Metals have historically been used in mining since they offer an excellent combination of hardness, toughness and cost and can be fabricated to form a variety of shapes. However, for many applications the metals used today have limited performance in the environments in which they are needed. This is particularly true for geothermal environments where the brines are highly siliceous causing corrosion and accelerated wear of many components. Geothermal sources are increasingly being explored for their high thermal value as well as possible sources for future minerals. While advanced ceramics have historically been expensive to produce in comparison with metals, they offer significantly greater corrosion resistance and hardness and can improve the overall performance when used in selected ?problem? areas. One of the major drawbacks in the use of ceramics in high impact areas has been their brittle nature and propensity to fracture and spall (fail) when loaded. Recent advances in the fabrication of ceramics have combined hard (strong) ceramics with more ductile ceramics in a architecturally designed microstructure, thus allowing ceramics to perform well in these high impact regions. Additionally, ceramics are significantly more inert to corrosion from either alkaline or acidic environments and can typically be used for significantly longer periods in these environments than their metallic counterparts.

Each year in the United States over 10 million tons of metal are discarded with our municipal waste. This, includes, not only ferrous metals, aluminum and copper but gold, silver, platinum and every other precious metal. Resource recovery, as an approach to waste management, is replacing disposal and it presents great opportunities for those in the metal refining and recovery industry. Combustion of waste enriches the metal fraction left in the ash to the point where metals can be efficiently recovered. The recovery and quality of metals can be enhanced by good combustion control. Innovative technology is needed to efficiently tap this generous, and renewable mine.

As LCDs with hazardous mercury backlight lamps are used an appropriate recycling technology has to be implemented.IntroductionLiquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) are widely used in notebooks, organizers, mobile phones, pocket calculators, measuring and control instruments, electronic games, hand-held miniature TVs, audio-video equipment, large signboards, automotive displays and more and more also for PC monitors and TVs.According to a study from Stanford Resources (San Jose, California) the annual value of LCDproducts reached 35 billion EUR in 2002, about 30% of this within the European Union, representing a total area of 2,1 million m2 Liquid Crystal Displays. An annual increase rate of about 15% is estimated for the next years (up to 4,1 million m2 in 2005).As LCDs are already on the market for several years, larger quantities of the more than 2,5 billion LCDs are coming into their End-of-Life stage for treatment. In 2005 this figure will become even more dramatic - 40.000 tons of LCD-modules contained in 2 million tons of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) or about 30% of total WEEE within EU. An amount which is representing 400 million EUR costs for incineration.Currently the only method used to deal with redundant LCD units is incineration or landfill. Both are expensive and causes emissions into the atmosphere (global warming) respectively water contamination (Class II) and difficulties in biodegradation. Up to now there is no recycling solution for LC-Displays available.As a consequence European Commission requests the disassembly of LCDs with an area bigger than 100 cm2 in the Directive 2002/96/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE Directive) of February 13, 2003."

"Creep cavitation of in single crystal (SX) superalloy was investigated. The constant load creep tests, in single crystal superalloys DD6, were conducted at the conditions of 800°C/700MPa, 850°C/550MPa and 900°C/450MPa, respectively. It was found that there were square facets on the stress fracture surface, and microscopic cavities in the ruptured specimens in the vicinity of the fracture surface. Both the square facets on the fracture surface and microscopic cavities in the section of the ruptured specimens show the morphology of the same thing at the different views, namely creep cavities, which are take the form of flatten cuboid. In fact, creep cavities are the longitudinally tensiled creep cracks slowly growing during the stress tensiling. The factors of creep cracks nucleation and growth conditions include: (a) enough high temperature to activate diffusion (b) casting pores as nucleation origination (c) high strains and strain rates. Eventually, the instantaneous fracture mechanism of creep specimen is cleavage fracture.IntroductionFor the materials used in elevated temperature service, creep behavior has to be accounted for. It is well recognized that creep rupture in polycrystalline materials at high temperature occurs principally by the nucleation and growth of microscopic cavities at grain boundaries, followed by microscopic cavities linkage to form micro- and eventually macro-intergranular cracks[l,2]. Without the usual grain boundaries, SX superalloys have superior capabilities at high temperatures to polycrystalline superalloys, and have become an established feature of gas turbine technology where they are commonly employed in the manufacture of high performance blades[3]. A considerable amount of work has been done over the past tens of years, and many models for nucleation and growth of creep cavities have been proposed, however, those are mainly for polycrystalline materials.In order to improve creep resistance that single crystal superalloys, in which grain boundaries are removed, have been developed. Because there don't exist grain boundaries in SX superalloy, the mechanism of nucleation and growth of creep cavities must be different from that in polycrystalline materials.Understanding the formation and characteristics of creep cavitation is crucial to model the lives of single crystal superalloys.M. Marchionni and L.G. Zhao et al. found that there were square facets on the stress fracture surface [4,5]. Roger C. Reed pointed out creep cavities lie in the necked region[6]. In this paper, the effects on the formation of creep cavities are discussed, as well as the morphology of creep cavities and fracture mechanism of SX superalloys."

"Composite consisting of ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) with short piassava fibers were prepared by extrusion process and their thermal and morphological behavior were investigated. The EVOH reinforced with 5 and 10 % of pi as sa va (Attaleafunifera Mart) fiber particle, based on the percentage weight ratio (wt %), untreated and treated with a commercial silane coupling agent, were prepared and the influence of fiber loading and the effect of chemical treatment on their thermal and morphological behavior were evaluated by SEM, DSC and TG analyses. Melt flow index (MFI) of the composites have been determined to evaluate the effects of fiber reinforcement on dynamic viscoelastic melt of the EVOH. In addition, piassava fibers characterization by SEM, FTIR, and organic and inorganic composition have also been carried out. The SEM results of the composites showed surface micrographs without microvoids and a good distribution, dispersion and compatibility between the fillers and the EVOH matrix. Concerning the piassava fibers characterization, the results showed that piassava has higher lignin content than cellulose and hemicelluloses, and around 0.7 % of ash with 52 % of silica (Si02). This high concentration of silica is consistent with the SEM analysis of the fiber that showed a large amount of ""silica rings"" encrusted on their surface.IntroductionLately, great worldwide interest has arisen in developing new technologies that enable the use of products with less environmental impact. Effort has been put into seeking natural modifier applications, particularly regarding the use of natural fibers. Special attention has been given to the use of natural vegetable fibers, because of the huge variety of species available. Such vegetable fibers are usually referred to as lignocellulosic materials [1]. This work evaluated the effects of piassava (Attalea funifera Mart.) fiber incorporation in an ethylene and vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH). The EVOH belongs to a family of copolymers with excellent gas barrier properties and resistance to organic compounds, which allow its application in different segments, from food packaging to gas tanks. However, EVOH is very sensitive to moisture, and in conditions of high humidity its gas barrier properties, thermal and mechanical properties are affected."

Research into potential applications of spouted bed electrowinning (SBE) in the zinc industry was conducted, in a collaboration between our two organizations. The main system investigated was zinc from acidic sulfate electrolytes. However, SBE can be extended to other electrolytes, or recovery of other elements. Electrolytic tests were carried out at the 0.01 to 0.1 m2 scale. Spouting behaviour has been studied at a larger scale, approaching a size suitable for an industrial unit cell. Much of our work was carried out using a micro-porous separator (Daramic®). However, we have also shown that ion exchange properties can have a controlling effect on the process chemistry, electrochemical efficiency, and plant flowsheet. In initial 0.1 m2 scale electrolytic tests, design and engineering issues for scale-up were identified. We review the major achievements, promising areas for application in the zinc industry, current status, and remaining barriers to development of SBE technology.

"Lead-zinc mineralization is distributed in Egypt along the Red Sea coast between El Qusier and Ras Banas. A representative sample from Um Gheig was collected and ground to -60 mesh for the mineralogical study. It contains hemimorphite (Zn2SiO4.H2O), sphalerite (ZnS), galena (PbS), calcite (CaCO3) and dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2) beside the gangue minerals gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O) and hematite (Fe2O3). Cadmium seems to be incorporated in the crystal structure of the zinc-lead minerals. The chemical analysis of Um-Gheig representative sample revealed that, it contains 16% zinc combined with 0.1% cadmium, 2.3% lead and 0.1% boron beside other elements.Pug and agitation leaching were performed on samples ground to -200 mesh to achieve the maximum dissolution efficiency of cadmium with respect to other elements. Cadmium leaching efficiency reached 90% by using 40% H2SO4 at S/L ratio 1/2 and stirring time 2 hours at 80o C. Cadmium was then separated as yellow precipitate of CdS from the sulfate leach liquor containing 0.9 g/l Cd, 145 g/l Zn, 0.15 g/l B and 0.01 g/l Pb. Separation of cadmium was carried out by direct precipitation using Na2S as well as H2S. The recovery of 94% cadmium free of zinc was achieved.IntroductionLead-zinc ores occur in Egypt in a few localities distributed along the Red Sea coast between El Qusier and Ras Banas. Um-Gheig Pb-Zn ore is a replacement deposit in limestone and calcareous sandstone in the basal series of the Middle Miocene rocks. The reserve of the ore deposits has been estimated by Soviet and German Experts to be about 900,000 Ton, Bishai [1]. As has been mentioned, zinc is a common element and cadmium is comparatively rare in almost zinc minerals. It was estimated that zinc is 200 times as abundant as cadmium. According to Bodas [2] about 2.1% of cadmium was carried by the Zn mineral hemimorphite (15.3% Zn) in Thailand. Also, Onal et al., [3] found that 164 g/t Cd was carried by Pb–Zn ore sample containing 10.17% Pb and 10.98% Zn from Aladag in Turkey. Cadmium metal has gained great importance due to its wide applications in civil and navy purposes as well as in nuclear field. It is characterized by its ability to absorb thermal neutrons during the chain reaction inside the nuclear reactors. It is also used in the manufacture of sheets which directed the chain reactions [4]."

There is an increasing trend in the copper smelters to recycle electronic materials, which contain relatively high concentration of precious metals. As a consequence, the amount of precious metals lost in the slag phase is increasing. To determine the portion of the precious metals chemically dissolved and that associated with the mechanically trapped matte in the slag will be a key factor to improve the recovery of those metals. Thus, an experimental study was carried out to determine the distribution of precious metals (Au, Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru) between the equilibrated copper matte and iron-silicate slag phases. The experiments were made in a magnesia crucible at 1573 K and a fixed partial pressure of SO2 of 0.1 atm for the matte grades between 40 and 70 mass% of copper. It was found that the distribution ratios (defined as mass% X in slag/mass% X in matte, where X represents the precious metal) are around 10-2 for Ru, 10-3 for Au, Pt and Pd and 10-4 for Rh. The distribution ratios show a tendency to increase when the grade of matte is increased.

The solvent extraction separation of iron from a zinc sulfate medium using DEHPA was investigated. After loading, the ferric ions were reduced in the organic phase using metallic zinc. The ferrous ions produced could be easily stripped into a sulfate solution with pH values in the range of 1.4 to 2.0. The small, laboratory scale pilot system used in this study allowed for continuous cycling of the organic and strip aqueous solutions. It was possible to establish and evaluate a series of steady state conditions under selected operating paiameters. The effects of processing parameters such as solution chemistry, flow rates, zinc metal loading and pH on iron recovery and efficiency were also evaluated. Under proper conditions, it was possible to remove about 5 g/L iron from the organic phase in one stage and to produce a concentrated iron sulfate strip solution containing ferrous ion concentrations in the range of 90 to 130 g/L. Preliminary feasibility tests were also made on electrowinning metallic iron from the strip solutions and crystallizing ferrous sulfate as a means of making a marketable iron product.

This paper aims at presenting numerical results showing the impact of different parameters on the limitation of entrained slag from ladle to tundish during the ladle drainage. These parameters are process parameters, slag properties or external actuator acting directly on ladle slag behaviour. Numerical simulations based on the use of the CFD Fluent software illustrate the vortexing and non-vortexing phenomena appearing during the ladle drainage. This numerical tool validated by experimental data acquired on water model has been applied to industrial configurations. It shows that the slag properties (viscosity, surface tension?) or some modifications of parameters (slide gate opening, geometry of the ladle bottom?) have a positive effect on the slag entrainment and also on the decrease of the ladle heel. Finally, the modelling of the behaviour of an external actuator injecting some gas in the region of the nozzle reveals interesting possibility for reducing slag entrainment from ladle to tundish during the final steps of the drainage.

"Viceroy Resource Corporation of Vancouver, B.C., has recently developed and brought into production the Brewery Creek Mine, an open-pit heap leach gold mine, located 55km east of Dawson City in Yukon, Canada. Mineable reserves are 15.2 million tonnes of ore grading 1.45 grams/tonne, containing 22 tonnes (707,315 oz) of gold. Ore processing employs the heap leach technology using run-of-mine ore. Highlights of 1996 activity included construction of a 158,000 m2 of leach pad, placing 1.9 million tonnes of ore at a grade of 1. 46 gpt to the leach pad, construction and successful commissioning of the ADR plant, and pouring of the first gold bar on November 15th.Permitting of this mine has drawn significant attention because of the innovated heap leach technology; although this technology has been proven in other jurisdictions, it has not been used at such extreme northern sites where winter temperatures routinely reach -45°C for extended periods.ABSTRACT ONLY"

Direct reduction of Cu,Ni,W,VandMo oxides from various industrial wastes the melting of iron and steel in different furnaces was studied by thermodynamic computation and experimental methods. Thermodynamics was used to compute the final partition of the alloying additions between iron-carbon melts and oxides contained in the slag. It was shown that the sequence of the reduction reactions depended on the melt composition as well as temperature. Kinetic factors limited recovery in induction melting, while experimentally measured final partition coefficients were close to equilibrium during EAF melting. The possibility of the partial substitution of expensive ferroalloys, by different industrial wastes containing nonferrous oxides, was evaluated in foundry and mini-mill conditions.

This work presents the development of an ionic equilibrium model and its use to simulate the distribution and concentration of chemical species (speciation) in sulfuric acid - cupric sulfate solutions in the 0-2 pH range, 0.1-10 gpl copper concentration range and 15-45°C temperature range. The model consists of a set of equations which represent the equilibrium relationships for the ionic reactions and the mass balances for the components present in the system. The effect of ionic strength was taken into account by correcting the equilibrium constant in concentrated solutions. Several species can be formed at different pH and temperature values, the principal being: HSO-4, SO42-, CuSO4(aq), Cu2+, and H+ in order of increasing solution acidity. Simulations show that concentrations are highly dependent on pH. The sulfuric acid speciates mainly as bisulfate ion (HS0-4) and hydrogen ion (H+) at pH values lower than 1. The model presented in this work can be applied to predict and analyze the solution composition in electrolytic copper processes such as electrowinning, electrorefining and electrodialysis, as well as the purification of various industrial solutions.

The use of microbes for sulfide oxidation was investigated as a potential treatment option for low-grade refractory gold ores at Newmont Mining Corporation. The resulting patented technology for heap biooxidation maximizes oxidation rate by distributing the microbial population on the ore before placement on a heap. This paper presents data on global oxidation rates based on oxygen uptake in a 50-kg column for sulfidic refractory ores from the Gold Quarry mine. The oxygen uptake data was converted to a global oxidation rate. The calculated global oxidation rate was used to determine heap cycling times for Newmont?s commercial heap biooxidation facility.

"IntroductionThe utilization of silver in the electronic industry has been increasing in recent years. It is desirable that valuable metals are recovered from the used scraps of these industrial goods. Condensor chips, for example, contain silver, palladium, and Ag-Pd alloy. The dissolution behavior of silver was studied assuming that scraps such as used condensor chips in which Ag-Pd paste is used are subjected to wet treatment.ExperimentalIn this study the powder, granules, and flakes of silver were used in these nitric acid leaching experiments. The nitric acid solution was agitated in a glass reactor with a magnetic stirrer and heated to the required temperature. The experiment was started by putting the silver sample in the solution. After the leaching, the solution was filtered and the concentration of silver in the filtrate was analyzed by ICP.ResultsIn dilute nitric acid of less than 5 N, silver powder dissolved easily with increase in the concentration of nitric acid and temperature. However, the more intensive the stirring of the solution was, the lower the dissolution quantity became. Fig. 1"

"The Valle de Aburrá area, corresponds to the city of Medellín and neighboring municipalities, with more than 3 million people. The area generates a sizable amount of solid waste, which has been taken to landfills for the last 20 years. This paper proposes a model for public policy making which considers the cost and benefit of different alternatives to handle the wastes in the coming 20 years. Combinations of several alternatives: Recycling, waste reduction, waste separation, incineration, land filling with lixiviate treating and gas energy recovery, and organic waste composting are considered and modeled and the results presented as a contribution for a more rational approach to policy making than the one currently being employed.IntroductionThe author, working for INDISA S.A., acted as a consultant for the direction of planning of the Empresas Varias de Medellín in 2004. This entity has the responsibility for the handling of the solid wastes of the city of Medellín and some of the neighboring municipalities. At the present time more the 700.000 annual tons of waste are taken to the site of La Pradera, located in very rainy location (3.000 mm of precipitation per year), with complex in topography and very far away from the sources of the waste. During the work the author detected important problems that should be addressed, as follows:Lack of adequate technical administration and resources. The entity did not count with sufficient human resources to focus on the appropriate technical handling of the solid waste. The organization worked mostly with independent contractors, lacking enough coherence and integration. The internal workload was too large for the few people who had technical responsibility and this gave rise to attention problems. It is important to have clear technical procedures, technical know how and human resources, continuity in the activities. It is important to have a clear capacity to plan, to study, to make tests and monitoring, to pursuit and develop ideas, to optimize the processes and to introduce changes, to respond to environmental authorities, to the communities and to mass media and to handle the contractors. All this was basically lacking. In the case of the handling of the sanitary filling of La Pradera, for example, although the people in charge were very able and dedicated, the magnitude of the task was too large and the resources they had were insufficient. As a result, the site had at the time of the study, problems with thousands of vultures, lack of immediate cover up for the waste, uncontrolled leaching, the area being dirty and little attractive, despite being called a park."

"Injection technology has been an important subject from the early days of ladle metallurgy until the present. During the last decade, there have not been many publications in the area of injection technology. It is the author's opinion that with the challenge to find new solutions especially to environmental and energy related problems as well as better understanding of phenomenas from computer modelling, a new era of inventive injection technology developments is at hand. This is illustrated in the article with examples from six different areas where MEFOS is or have recently carried out R&D work related to issues from the injection technology field. IntroductionThe boom in injection technologies came with the introduction of ladle metallurgy treatment during the '70s and '80s. Since then, the theories and principles have been thoroughly laid down by a number of scientists and also published at several early SCANINJECT conferences.Not many new technologies/applications have been presented during the last ten years. This might lead one to believe that everything is known and done. Those, like MEFOS, who are challenged to find technological solutions to a number of environmental problems and energy saving issues in the pyrometallurgical field are, however, continuously faced with the task of developing new injection technologies.Especially, the call for sustainable technologies to solve environmental problems is a challenge for metallurgists all over the world and it will surely induce a revival of injection technologies. So, in order to encourage all injection experts, let us share some new experiences and let us encourage each other's creativity to solve some of the demands of the future society.The following show some examples of technologies under development, or recently tested."
