"A novel selenium removal process called Recycled Green rust/Ferrite Process is developed by MMC. In this process, a mixed Fe2+-Fe3+ hydroxide compound, green rust (GR), reduces selenate to elemental selenium, while GR is consequently oxidized to magnetite Fe3O4. Sequencing batch-mode experiment showed that the residual selenium concentration gradually decreased with the number of batch test increased. Stable selenium removal was achieved when the number of batch test exceed 15 times. Optimum selenium removal ratio reached 99.95% where initial Se concentration 2.1mg/L decreased to 0.001mg/L. Furthermore, the continuous feeding test carried out through a pilot-scale plant with a feeding capacity 600 L/hr. Approximately 860-hour-feeding test was carried out for the selenium-contaminated groundwater which had an averaged selenium concentration of 0.88 mg/L. Selenium concentration in the effluent from thickener maintained less than 0.01 mg/L (selenium removal rate of 99%) until a net operating time reached 800 hours.IntroductionJapan is one of the largest producers of selenium, and thus there are potential environmental impacts of selenium on soil and aquatic environments. The Mitsubishi Material Corporation (MMC) owns some real estate properties whose soil and groundwater was polluted by selenium and other heavy metals. These sites include former industrial plants: a smelter for nonferrous metal and a fabricating semiconductors and pigments. Selenium in aquatic environment commonly exists in four oxidation states, namely, VI, IV, 0 and -II. Selenate ion (SeO4 2-), the most oxidized form of selenium, and selenite ion (SeO3 2-) are highly soluble and mobile. Elemental selenium (Se0) is insoluble in water and therefore has much lower toxicity. Because selenium is carcinogenic and teratogenic at high concentration, the national effluent standard in Japan is fixed at 0.1 mg/L and the environmental standard at 0.01 mg/L. Although there are several selenium removal techniques, the most conventional process is coprecipitation with a ferric hydroxide because of its simplicity and low cost. It is known that selenite is adsorbed strongly on the surface of ferric hydroxide, but selenate is not. The low affinity of selenate on oxide mineral surfaces was demonstrated by the fact that selenate could be easily displaced by adding competing anions, particularly sulfate ion. Selenate removal from polluted water is one of the most difficult techniques, and more effective methods are desired. MMC developed a novel selenium removal process [1]. In this process, the concentrated slurry that contains Fe(II)-Fe(III) hydroxyl-salts known as Green Rusts (GRs) contributes to selenate removal. The main components of the iron precipitate in the reactor are GRs and their oxidation product, magnetite (Fe3O4)."

Illumination plays a critical role in an underground miner?s safety because miners depend most heavily on visual cues to recognize hazards. Mobile mining machinery, located in the miner?s peripheral field-of-view (±10° to about ±60° off-axis), may pose potential pinning and striking hazards. The main objective of this research was to determine if there were peripheral visual performance improvements for the detection of moving objects when using cool-white light-emitting diode (LED) cap lamps as compared to incandescent (INC) light bulbs commonly used in miner cap lamps. The cap lamp variable of interest is the spectral power distribution (SPD); the illuminances were normalized by a diffusion filter. The second objective was to determine if age is a factor for peripheral visual performance. This is important because the workforce is aging ? the average miner age is about 43 years old. Thirty subjects participated in the study; ten subjects each in the age groups of younger (18 to 25 years), middle (40 to 50 years), and older (50+ years). Visual performance was quantified by the subjects? speed and accuracy of response to detect the rotation of high-contrast (white) circular targets located 3.83 meters (m) away at -20°, 40°, and 50° off-axis. The speed of detection and the number of missed target rotations (accuracy) were measured. The prototype LED cap lamp results were best with a 11% to 15% improvement compared to the INC and LED cap lamps respectively. Age does appear to be a significant factor. For the middle and older age groups?, target movement detection time increased 75% and 60% and the number of missed targets increased 500% and 450% respectively in comparison to the youngest age group. The results also suggest that target location is a significant factor. The subjects? target movement detection time for the 40° and 50° target movements increased 16% and 69% respectively as compared to the -20° target.

The adsorption process of Pb2+ from aqueous solutions by spent grains modified with Imol/L NaCI solution was investigated. The effects of solution pH, contact time, adsorbent concentration, initial Pb2+ concentration, particle size on Pb2+removal were also studied. The initial adsorption process was rapid and 90.35% of Pb2+ adsorption occurred within 30 min. The absorption equilibrium was obtained at 4h. When pH was 5.5, Pb2+ concentration in aqueous solutions decreased from the initial content of 20 mg/L to 0.0 I mg/L after 5 hours by application of IOg/L adsorbent at 25?C, Pb2+ removal efficiency reached up to 99.95% and the Pb2+ remaining in aqueous solutions was under China Sanitary Standard for Drinking Water (GB5749-85). Adsorption data fitted well with Lanf+muir and Freundlich models. However,Langmuir isotherm model was better to descnbe Pb- adsorplion than Freundhch model, mdlcatmg that the applicability of monolayer coverage of Pb2+ on the surface of adsorbent.

The emerging discipline of ægeometallurgyÆ is not new but is becoming increasingly recognised as a discrete and high-value activity that reflects an ongoing commercial and cultural trend towards more effective mine site integration and optimisation. The AMIRA International P843 æGeMIIIÆ project (Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling) is a major new cross discipline research collaboration designed to provide support for this emerging industry trend. The project is currently supported by 18 global mineral companies and involves collaboration between the CODES Centre of Excellence (University of Tasmania), JKMRC and BRC (University of Queensland) and CSIRO Exploration and Mining. These groups represent recognised research excellence in the fields of economic geology, automated core logging, advanced microscopy and process mineralogy, mineral processing, mine planning and resource optimisation. The needs and challenges of geometallurgy as an integrated activity will be outlined together with the ongoing contribution and aims of the AMIRA P843 æGeMIIIÆ project. The main emphasis is on development of predictive geometallurgical indices for key processing performance parameters that reflect inherent geological variability. The ultimate aim is to provide predictive indices of geometallurgical performance that can be confidently embedded into resource models and used for risk-defined mine planning and optimisation.

global mining boom and in-creased demand for iron ore has lead to a resurgence in the mining industry in Minnesota. At the combined 81st Annual Minnesota Section of SME Meeting and 69th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium, April 15-16 in Duluth, MN, this resurgence was the hot topic as new mining projects were featured in the keynote session. The meeting attracted more than 400 mining industry professionals, including engineers, executives, mining managers and suppliers from around the world. This year?s theme was ?New Ventures in Mining.? The meeting included concurrent technical papers sessions, a keynote session that featured three distinguished speakers and a panel discussion that provided updates on new mining developments in the state. The Minnesota Section of SME technical papers were presented in concurrent sessions, one on mining and one on mineral processing. The mining session included papers on drilling, ore blending, slope stabilization, dust control and operations management. The mineral processing session included papers on plant-control technology, ball mills, pellet strength and fans. Also offered was an SME short course titled ?Simulation based pellet induration optimization.? The Minnesota Section of SME held its annual business meeting during the conference. The 69th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium technical sessions were held on April 15 and also consisted of concurrent sessions on mining and mineral processing. Mining session topics included logistics management, real-time performance measurement, uses for taconite aggregate and environmental issues. The mineral processing session included papers on ore liberation characteristics, zeta potential studies, induration modeling, fuel optimization and conveyor belts. The combined conference included a tradeshow with more than 80 booth spaces featuring vendors offering products and services to Minnesota?s booming mining industry. More than 900 people, including conference registrants and special invited guests of the vendors, at-tended the tradeshow opening reception. This was the largest trade show in many years ? an indication of the vitality of the mining industry in Minnesota.

The PT. Adaro Coal Mine targeted in this research is located in South Kalimantan, Indonesia. The coal production of this mine is increasing year, with about 35 M tons of coal produced in 2006. This mine faces many ground control problems, especially instability of the footwall. Large-scale landslides occur often in the footwall; this may be because of weak rock and the effect of footwall rock weathering. Hence, prompt measures must be developed and followed in order to preserve the stability of the footwall and make this mine safe. Additionally, the final pit design is now being reconsidered because of the increasing demand for and high price of coal. With these issues in mind, this paper describes a solution for improving the stability of the footwall and discusses the final pit design based on the results of an on-site investigation and numerical analysis.

A mathematical model has been developed to predict the interface dynamics and droplet generation of the buoyant phase in a two-fluid system. The model employs the well-known SIMPLE algorithm for obtaining flow fields and the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method, for interface tracking. The implementation of the model in water-oil systems, where the oil layer is placed above a recirculating water bath, is discussed. The evolution of the water-oil interface leading to the formation of oil droplets is computed realistically.

"BHP-Billiton’s Cannington mine in Northwest Queensland produces a silver-rich lead concentrate and a zinc concentrate. The plant has the capacity to treat 3.1 mta and for the year to June 2006 mean feed grade was 10.3% Pb, 461 g/t Ag and 3.7% Zn. Recovery losses of lead and silver are primarily in the fine fractions. In 2001, the plant was modified when it was determined that splitting the lead feed into two size fractions, and floating the two fractions separately increased fine lead and silver recovery. The fine lead fraction (called the split float) is 80% <16µm and about a quarter of the lead and silver is in the finest fractions. In 2006 to further improve lead and silver recovery a statistical plant trial of magnetic aggregation conditioning of the split float feed was undertaken. While pure galena is diamagnetic the Cannington galena contains iron within the galena mineral resulting in the galena having a paramagnetic, magnetic susceptibility. The trial demonstrated to greater than 98% statistical significance an increase in lead recovery, and to 99% statistical significance an increase in silver recovery, and to greater than 97% significance an increase in the lead in concentrate in the split float circuit. These economic recovery benefits with magnetic aggregation of the split float feed, has led to the incorporation of this technology in the plant.INTRODUCTIONThe BHP-Billiton owned Cannington silver, lead and zinc mine is located in the Australian state of Queensland about 800 kilometres west of the coastal city of Townsville. This is a pastoral area characterised by large cattle farms, low population density and very little infrastructure. The area has two seasons, a wet, hot summer and a dry, mild winter. Because of its isolation and lack of infrastructure the mine has always operated on a fly in fly out basis.Geological drilling defined the resource as 43.8 million tonnes grading 11.6% lead, 4.4% zinc and 538 ppm silver (Walters and Bailey, 1998). At times during its history Cannington has held the crown as the single largest lead and silver mine in the world (Torrisi and Smith 2003). Another unique characteristic of the operation’s history is the rapid progress from discovery to operation. The first drill to intersect the ore body was in 1990 and the mine and plant was commissioned in 1997."

"India’s present annual marine fish catch is 2.9 million tonnes and its low value fishes such as sardines, sciaenids, goat fishes and leiognathids amount to 60%. The fish meal obtained from these resources is mainly used presently as an ingredient in live stock and aquaculture feeds. These fishes offer vast scope in the production of pet foods. Pet foods prepared with leiognathid fish meal (60%), maize flour (10%), wheat flour (5%), vitamin and mineral mixture (5%) and water (20%) and experimented with 50 cats and 50 dogs were found to be ideal. Depending on protein level, feeds are being formulated for experimenting with more number of pet animals. Training programmes are also planned for unemployed people to popularize pet foods for commercial purposes.IntroductionIndia’s present annual marine fish catch is 2.9 million tonnes and low-value fishes sucha s sardines (Sardinella albella, s. gibbosa, S. fimbriata and S. melanura); sciaenids (Otolithus spp. and Jhonius dussumieri); engraulids (Stolephorus indicus); and leiognathids Leiognathus bindus, L. equilus and Gazza achlamys) constitute 60% (Figure 1)[1]. In the late 1990s, a chemical process to remove mercury and selenium from weak sulphuric acid solutions was patented and implemented in the CEZinc refinery in Valleyfield, Quebec. The CEZinc process comprises two stages. In the first one, sodium sulphide is added to the weak acid solution in order to precipitate the soluble mercury. The solution is then treated with sodium dithionite in order to reduce the selenium to elemental form. Because of recent changes in the composition of the industrial solution, a project to study the background chemical reactions was started. In this paper, a review of the background chemistry is presented on the basis of several eh-pH diagrams on one hand, while on the other experimental results are reported dealing with the reaction of selenium (IV) species with either dithionite, sulphide or a combination of the two. According to this work, elemental selenium enjoys a wide pH-eh range stability with selenium sulphide being metastable. Selenium (IV) in single metal synthetic solutions was found to be reduced - to elemental state - at ambient temperature down to ppb range with dithionite as long as the stoichiometric ratio (dithionite/selenium) was in excess of two and the pH < 1.7. Under these conditions the reaction was very fast reaching completion within one minute. Sodium sulphide proved equally effective in reducing selenium (this time as selenium sulphide) to ppb range from single metal solutions. However, in mixed Se-Hg solutions deviations from this "ideal" behaviour was observed resulting in higher levels of residual soluble selenium left in solution.

Fire suppression systems are now recognised by both NFPA 502 and PIARC as legitimate tools for both life protection and asset protection. The effectiveness of these tools for life protection demands extremely rapid and accurate incident detection coupled with rapid response. This rapid response must be integrated with other emergency systems such as emergency ventilation. The March 2007 fatal Burnley Tunnel incident in Australia graphically illustrates the potential of effectively integrated fixed suppression systems to protect people from harm and save infrastructure from damage. Despite the raft of technology available in that instance to the operator it was the human operatorÆs ability to effectively control the emergency equipment and not the equipment itself which so positively influenced the threat to life and property.

"More than 95% of asphalt pavement materials consist of aggregates. The highway and construction industries consume a huge amount of aggregates annually causing considerable energy and environmental losses. The aggregates are usually produced from neighborhood aggregate quarries or form natural aggregate sources. The use of marble and granite wastes from quarries as aggregates might help meet the increasing demands and slow down any detrimental effects on the environment. Chemical and physical results showed that the use of marble and granite wastes from quarries in the asphalt production is quite fusible. Consequently, granite sawmills would perform a clean technology. This technology would also have an economical impact by not spending on basalt extraction.IntroductionThe granite fines generated from sawmills of ornamental rocks comes as a great problem and it lacks undeletable solutions. This problem involves the preservation of the environmental and constitutes one of the subjects more critical the point of view of social beneficiation of the population. The Cachoeiro de Itapemirim County, Espírito Santo State, Brazil is an example, of this problem. In this area, the granite and marble fines generation is around 15.000 ton/year.The problems generated by these residues affect with more emphasis the animals, such as the cattle, which inhaled the water content fines of granite and this residue accumulate in their lungs. Other great problem observed is the sanded of the river and the reduction of aquatic life.This problem is beginning to be set out due to performance of Center of Mineral Technology (CETEM), and of several other organisms of Rio de Janeiro State, aiding the sawmills owner’s. This help consists of teaching the best procedure of discard the residues and studies for its use, for instance the production of mortars, tiles, bricks and road pavements [1]."

Titaniferous magnetite deposits are a significant source of vanadium for use in high strength steel alloying and other chemical applications. The mineralogy of the deposits varies markedly and the ore characteristics strongly influence the process route selected and the metallurgical outcomes. Characterisation of the ores reveals the presence of magnetite, ilmenite and other minerals such as spinel hematite and goethite with variable degrees of weathering along with weathered products of host rock. The standard processing route is to crush, grind and magnetically recover a concentrate for salt roasting to produce a soluble vanadate. Ore beneficiation is practised to generate an iron based mineral concentrate containing much of the vanadium with low silica levels of two per cent. Typical processing problems encountered are fine liberation size, over grinding of the magnetite and variable response to magnetic separation resulting from the weathering profile. Beneficiation options are restricted, and generally focused on producing a combined iron and titanium rich concentrate containing vanadium due to the fact that ilmenite and magnetite and their products of weathering are magnetic and have similar specific gravities making their separation difficult. The ilmenite usually contains low levels of vanadium making its separation highly desirable from the iron mineralisation containing higher levels of vanadium. Salt roasting of vanadium ores followed by water leaching has been the standard processing route for many years. The cost of suitable sodium salts, availability of capital and increasing energy costs and energy availability are critical factors in determining the viability of aspiring vanadium producers. To date, only Windimurra has acquired full capital funding, secured energy and sodium salt supplies at suitable cost that enable the construction of the project. Low overall recoveries of vanadium to concentrate roasting at up to 1200¦C are critical cost issues. In this paper, factors influencing the recovery of vanadium are reviewed and emerging processing trends explored. The important features of the processing of titaniferous magnetites have been condensed from the literature, published works, company websites, our own work and personal communication.

The purpose of this work is to determine the equilibrium-state of the aqueous-solution which is produced by the leaching processes, including natural weathering of pyrite minerals. The latter can lead to acid-mine-drainage (AMD). The ferric iron species (Fe3+) resulting from bacteria-catalysed oxidation of ferrous iron (Fe2+), in the presence of water and air, is known to bring about steady-dissolution of minerals chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), sphalerite (ZnS), pyrite (FeS2), and so forth. Good-aeration, relatively high-porosity and sufficient bacterial activity tend to promote leaching in waste-rock-dumps. The composition of the aqueous-phase that accumulates in the pore-space (or in open-pits) is of practical interest as it would strongly influence the leaching of both sulfide and non-sulfide minerals. Since the reactions among the various ionic species occur relatively fast, the solution-phase may be regarded as approaching a state of virtual-equilibrium and it is possible to determine by computation the respective concentrations of the many dissolved species. For the Cu-Fe-H-O-S system, these species may include: H+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Cu2+, HSO4-, SO42-, OH-, CuSO4o, H2O, Fe(OH)+, Fe(OH)2+, Fe(OH)2+, Fe2(OH)24+, Fe(SO4)+, Fe(HSO4)+, Fe(HSO4)2+, and Fe(SO4)2-. The aqueous-system which may be constituted from appropriate mole-quantities of H2SO4, FeSO4, Fe2(SO4)3, and CuSO4 is in fact the result of various natural processes (reactions) and due respect must be accorded to the extents of these reactions. The present model computes the equilibrium molalities of the foregoing ionic and neutral aqueous species, using the iterative equilibrium constant method that ensures strict-adherence to charge-balance and elemental molar-balance constraints. The dissolving sulfide-minerals (FeS2, CuFeS2) consume Fe2(SO4)3, H2O, and O2 and yield FeSO4, H2SO4, and CuSO4 while the aqueous-phase tends to become progressively acidic (declining pH) reflecting the gradual increase in the extents of sulfide-dissolution reactions. The equilibrium-state of the solution-phase is computed for specific set of values for the extents of respective reactions. The temperature and pressure of the system are 25¦ C (298.15 K) and 101.325 kPa (1.0 atm), respectively. The mica-like minerals such as the biotite [H2K(Mg,Fe)3Al(SiO4)3] tend to consume much of the H2SO4(aq), with the extracted K+, Mg2+, Fe2+ and Al3+ ionic species accumulating in the solution. The precipitation of the jarosites (potassium, hydronium, or ammonium) contributes to the removal of ferric and ferrous species from the solution-phase. In the present work, the emphasis is on predicting the compositions of the aqueous- and condensed-phases with advancing time or increasing æextent of reactionÆ. The results of such calculations are compared to published data on raw AMD (acid-mine-drainage).

"In the case of treating phosphatizing wastewater containing zinc, zinc had an impact on the solution chemistry, especially on pH. Fe2(SO4)3 and CaCl2 were used as precipitators to remove phosphate from zincic phosphatizing wastewater and the optimum pH was investigated. Zinc ion had a significant effect on the optimum pH. The optimum pH ranges were 12.10(inlet concentration of 15.67mg/L, outlet concentration of 9.53mg/L), 3.04-5.50(inlet concentration of 11.97mg/L, outlet concentration of 0.44-0.26mg/L), and more than 10.72(inlet concentration of 12.24mg/L, outlet concentration of less than 0.47mg/L) under the conditions without precipitator, with Fe2(SO4)3 and with CaCl2 respectively.Introduction Phosphate coating is commonly used for protective coating of machine elements. Including oil removal by caustic washing, rust removal by acid washing, phosphatization and inactivation, the phosphatization process produces wastewater containing inorganic salt of high concentration, especially the phosphate, beyond the environmental standards and polluting environment seriously. What’s more, the wastewater from zincic phosphatizing technology also contains another pollutant, zinc. At present, Chemical Precipitation (CP) and Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) are two of most common technologies of phosphate removal. BNR, such as A/O, A2/O and UCT technology, is suited for wastewater containing organ phosphorus of low concentration and CP for wastewater with phosphate of high concentration [1]. Researches on CP treating wastewater containing phosphate of high concentration, mainly focus on adding quantity of precipitators[2-5] and coagulants[2-4] and the choice of technologies[3-9]."

Gold-bearing polymetallic sulfide deposits are common in Serbia, and mostly occur in the Karpato-Balkan and, to a lesser extent, the Serbo-Macedonian metallogenic province. These deposits û Coka Marin (Majdanpek), Grabova Reka (Blagojev Kamen), Lece (Medvedja) and Veliki Cip (Boranja) û are dominated by Cu and/or Pb-Zn mineralisation that contains a variety of Pb, Zn, Cu and Fe (¦ Sb, As, Bi) sulfides and sulfosalts, as well as native elements. Gangue minerals are composed of quartz, carbonates and rare silicates and barite. Based on their gold content these deposits can be divided in three groups:1. Polymetallic deposits with a high gold content (&gt;1 g/t).2. Polymetallic deposits with an intermediate gold content (0.1 to 1 g/t), and3. Polymetallic deposits with a low gold content (&lt;0.1 g/t). Gold occurs as native gold or as an alloy with silver. Native gold ranges in size from 5 to 20 ¦m, with a few rare grains over 100 ¦m, as isolated grains or as microveins (in the first group of deposits). Its distribution within the deposit in uneven. Native gold in the second group is smaller in size (1 - 5 ¦m, rarely 20 ¦m), where it is uniformly distributed in a quartz-silicate matrix. The third group is of no economical importance. The subject of research has been the first group of polymetallic deposits.

The aim of this paper is to present the progress of the plan of the Greek Public Power Corporation S.A. (PPC S.A.) at the Lignite Centre of Megalopolis in Peloponnesus (southern Greece) to manage impacts on local communities in areas affected by its activities during the lignite mining operation and post-closure. The reclamation works in the waste dump areas of the mines that constitute the Megalopolis Lignite Centre, concerning the utilization of waste dumps for infrastructure community projects constructions are discussed. "Gypsum and limestone methods were examined in this study to process zinnwaldite wastes originating from dressing Sn-W ores mined in the Czech Republic. These wastes containing 0.20-0.30% Li and 0.10-0.20% Rb were subjected to magnetic separation to obtain a zinnwaldite concentrate with 1.36% Li and 0.94% Rb. It was observed that processing of the zinnwaldite concentrate with gypsum resulted in almost 96% recovery of Li into aqueous liquors, whilst rubidium extraction was only 25%. At the same time, it is possible to extract almost 92% Li and Rb from the identical zinnwaldite concentrate if the concentrate is processed by limestone method. Lithium carbonate, a final product of both methods was recovered from the refined sulphate solution using K2CO3 as a precipitation agent and/or from unrefined hydroxide solution using gaseous CO2. In the continuation of this study, rubidium will be separated from carbonate solutions after Li2CO3 precipitation as RbAl(SO4)2, an intermediate for Rb2CO3 production. IntroductionLithium is used as an alloying constituent in lightweight alloys, as a heat transfer medium in nuclear reactors and as a component in primary and secondary batteries. With the development of a new generation of electric vehicles, the lithium demand will dramatically grow. Lithium chemicals find extensive application in many industrial branches such as metallurgical, glass, ceramic and pharmaceutical industries. Rubidium compounds are predominantly used in psychiatry and medicine, in magneto-optic modulators, solid-state lasers, phosphors and components of electrolytes for fuel cells. The four most important lithium minerals are amblygonite, spodumene, petalite, and lepidolite. Spodumene LiAlSi2O6 (6.0-7.5% Li2O) and petalite LiAlSi4O10 (3.5-4.5% Li2O) belong to aluminosilcate minerals. Lepidolite (Li.Al)3(Al.Si)4O10(F.OH)2 (3.30-7.74% Li2O), lithium mica, is the most important representative of the mica minerals, a subgroup of the aluminosilicates. It frequently contains 3–5% Rb2O and eventually caesium. Zinnwaldite, which has the general formula K(Li.Al.Fe)3(Al.Si)4O10(F.OH)2 (2-5% Li2O), is regarded as a variety of lepidolite with a high iron content. Commercial amblygonite is a complex phosphate (Li.Na)Al(F.OH)PO4 (up to 9.88% Li2O), however, its deposits have not been commercially exploited because of their small size. Natural brines with a high lithium chloride content are important in the industrial production of lithium [l]"

The sudden failure of bodies of rock is a serious problem commonly experienced in the international mining industry. These explosive releases of energy are referred-to as ?bumps?, ?outbursts? and ?rockbursts?. Rockbursts can occur at such a rapid speed that they present a direct threat to safety in large parts of the mine workings. The build-up of excess stress within the body of rock can be attributed to different causes. In shallow workings, for example, sudden and violent failure of the roof strata can be caused by leaving insufficient pillar width when practising room-and-pillar mining. At much greater working depths, as it is the case in the German coal industry, rockbursts are generally attributable to high levels of rock pressure. This can even result in coal outbursts when driving individual roadways. More than thirty years ago the German coal industry suffered from numerous rockburst incidents which caused many deaths and serious injuries. This led directly to the establishment of the Rockburst Prevention Centre, which was created at the instigation of the mining companies and the chief mines inspectorate. The consistent logging and analysis of all rockburst incidents has led to the development of a system that is still used as a basis for preventing underground rockbursts and minimising the risk of such phenomena occurring. Working closely with the mining authorities and mining companies the accredited experts of the Rockburst Prevention Centre have played a key role in helping to develop and implement a range of methods for the early detection and prevention of rockbursts.
