Flash smelting of nickel sulphide concentrate has been practiced at WMC's Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter for 20 years. The mineralogy of the concentrate from the original mines was particularly suited to this process. However, taking a strategic view, potential new processing routes should be fully evaluated as possible replacements for the current technology. The Vanyukov process has been under development in Russia for the past 40 years and has been successfully applied on a large scale to the smelting of copper concentrates, at two locations - Norilsk and Balkhash. The potential for the application of the Vanyukov process to the smelting of nickel concentrates offers a number of processing advantages, including smaller reactor and decreased dependence on fuel oil. This paper reports on preliminary investigations into the application of the Vanyukov process to the smelting of nickel concentrates. At this stage the investigations are limited to semi-quantitative comparisons and modelling studies.

"Steel members of the ground support systems in underground mines are routinely exposed to corrosive environment that may range from acidic to alkaline. Corrosion of steel bolts leads to metal loss and thereby, reduction in strength and useful life. Protective coatings are commonly applied to the steel bolts to combat corrosion. However, coatings are expensive and often cumbersome in practical applications. Instead, Minova has developed an innovative technology based on sacrificial anodes. The anodes were designed from non-ferritic alloys that are inferior to steel on the Galvanic Series. This paper will present data from field testing to show significant benefit of the technology. Potential applications in current products will be discussed. INTRODUCTION Corrosion is a physical alteration of a steel material from electrochemical reaction with its environment that often results in reduction of the mechanical and physical properties of that material. Mine roof bolts, the subject of this investigation, are particularly susceptible to corrosion as they can be exposed in their working environment to ground water and air with high humidity. As other researchers have determined, corrosion increases markedly in sulfide ore bodies due to acid runoff. There are several types of corrosion that a rock bolt is likely to undergo when used for ground reinforcement in underground mines (Aziz et al., 2013). Of all the types of corrosion, pitting is particularly dangerous as it can remove capacity for the bolt to deform with subsequent strata movements. Sudden failure of a bolt is likely to occur when severe pitting corrosion is experienced. The type and nature of corrosion depend on the nature of the ground condition and bolt encapsulation. Generally, the type of corrosion and severity of the corrosion varies along the axis of bolt. Almost all of the mine roof bolts used in mines, with the exception of fiber reinforced polymers, are made from steel. "Laboratory semi-batch flotation tests were conducted using two different sulphide ore samples. The size reduction was adjusted to cover a wide range of flotation feed size distributions. Results show that similar recoveries can be achieved independently of the fineness of grind. This result suggests that possible energy savings could be achieved by a redistribution of the power between the grinding and regrinding mills. The behaviour of the selectivity curves shows that some gangue minerals are more sensitive to particle size than other ones, implying the existence of preferential associations between minerals in the ore.INTRODUCTIONInteractions between grinding and flotation have been studied for many years, and still a robust model to link the two processes lacks to be developed (Girard et al., 2005; Bazin et al., 2001). The ore size reduction liberates mineral grains, while flotation separates them into valuable minerals and gangue. The more size reduction that is applied to the ore the more important is the mineral liberation but also the production of fine particles that can pose problems during flotation (Trahar and Warren, 1976). The definition of the grinding requirement for flotation is a complex problem (Rickelton and Dell, 1977; Sosa Blanca et al., 2000; Morrison, 1993; Wei and Gay, 1999).This paper analyzes the effect of the fineness of grind using semi-batch flotation test results. The first two sections describe the test procedure and the results. The third section analyzes the results in terms of liberation and selectivity, and proposes a possible redistribution of power between grinding and regrinding mills."

Rare earth extraction tank has many adverse effects like big floor space and high production accumulation during industrial production. Current researches usually focus on changing the device structure without making a breakthrough towards gravity clarification. This paper attempts to achieve this goal by using both the action of clarification by gravity and clarification by stirring. Because many physical parameters affect the clarification and separation rates, the density, viscosity and surface tension of the two phases were determined at different temperatures and different concentration of aqueous solution. The innovation of this research involves adopting the Karl-Fischer method to investigate water content in oil phase during the stirred separation process. In this paper, the separation effect of different physical parameters was studied and the dimensional equation between water content and the physical parameters was established by combining with the experimental data.

To avoid the escalating cost of disposal of metals-containing wastewater and residues, new wastewater treatments will focus on the recovery of the metals. A combination of ion exchange and electrowinning can produce water suitable for discharge and relatively pure metals. The use of a chelating resin can enhance the selectivity of both the removal process and the elution of metals from the resin. A new, simple method of preparing a variety of chelating resins is being developed. The materials produced by this method exhibit interesting, as well as potentially useful, elution behavior. The performance of one test resin is described.

A caracterização do tamanho de grão austenítico prévio dos aços é importante, pois a partir desta investigação é possível estimar parâmetros metalúrgicos que repercutirão na qualidade final do produto. Desenvolver métodos para a revelação do contorno de grão prévio se faz necessário, porém, muitas pesquisas apontam para a complexidade destes métodos. Este trabalho se propõe a avaliar diferentes técnicas de contraste para revelar o contorno de grão austenítico prévio dos aços ABNT 1045 e ABNT 4340. Foram utilizadas três técnicas para revelar o contorno de grão austenítico prévio, sendo: ataque químico, ataque térmico e têmpera superficial. Destacam-se o ataque térmico e a têmpera superficial como métodos inovadores. O ataque químico foi realizado em três condições, variando-se a composição de ácido clorídrico adicionado ao reativo a base de ácido pícrico. O ataque térmico foi realizado em duas condições, em atmosfera inerte e em atmosfera oxidante/inerte. A técnica de têmpera superficial consistiu em austenitizar e promover um tratamento térmico de têmpera com restrições na taxa de resfriamento, promovendo um efeito de transformação bainitica nos contornos de grãos austeníticos prévios. Pôde-se concluir que a técnica mais eficiente para os aços estudados foi o ataque químico a base de ácido pícrico. As técnicas de ataque térmico e têmpera superficial se mostraram eficientes para o aço ABNT 1045, apresentando potencial de melhoria metodológica para outros tipos de aços.

"A methodology is proposed for milling flowsheet design using flotation rate, selectivity and residence time distribution data. The flotation rate data and the difference in flotation rates between the main minerals to be separated are determined from laboratory batch tests. The residence time distribution (RTD) data is calculated using the tanks-in-series model assuming each flotation cell is a perfect reactor. The rate, selectivity and RTD data can be used to calculate the optimum flotation cell number in a bank for rougher/scavenger in a commercial plant.This methodology is demonstrated in a case study of a nickel sulfide ore. It is shown that miniplant rougher/scavenger data can be closely predicted from a batch test using the proposed methodology.INTRODUCTIONIt has been the trend in the past several decades that large flotation cells are increasingly used. This is largely driven by the economics as ore grades are getting lower and the rate of ore processing must be increased in order to keep mining operations economically viable. The development and evaluation of 250 to 500 m3 WEMCO SmartCell and Outokumpu TankCell flotation machines are well in progress. There are many advantages in using large cells: fewer cells, less floor space, lower power cost (although this is now being questioned for fine particle flotation), simpler circuit, simpler control, and lower auxiliary equipment cost (Arbiter, 1999). As flotation cells are getting larger, the importance of cell hydrodynamics, namely, air/slurry dispersion, power intensity, froth transfer, residence time distribution (RTD) and short-circuiting are being fully recognized (Jonaitis, 1999; Weber, et al., 1999; Gomez and Finch, 2002). It is not the intention of this paper to discuss flotation cell scale-up. The intention is to answer what is the optimum number and size of cells in a flotation bank for a given throughput. Figure 1 illustrates this problem facing design engineers. The same mean residence time required for a given throughput can be achieved in a single large cell, or many smaller cells in a row. A few cells of large size may be more cost-effective but they may not be as effective as more cells of smaller size in achieving the optimum metallurgy."

"There is large electricity generation potential in discard coal, both in stockpiles and current arisings. Power stations with a combined capacity of up to 18 GW electrical (GWe) could be fuelled by discard coal. Modern circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC) boilers, with capital costs comparable to equivalent pulverized fuel (PF) boilers, are capable of utilizing discard coal at a high efficiency while reducing sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions though the use of limestone sorbent for ‘in-situ’ capture.A detailed economic assessment of the feasibility of electricity generation from discard coal, comprising material and energy balances and the construction of a discounted cash flow (DCF) table, shows that it is also potentially attractive from an economic perspective. A base case analysis shows positive net present values (NPVs) and an internal rate of return (IRR) of 21.4%. Sensitivity analyses on critical parameters show that the economic viability is heavily dependent on parameters such as coal cost and the value of electricity. The project becomes unattractive above a coal price of approximately R300 per ton and at an electricity value below approximately 59c per kilowatt-hour (kWh).Site- and project-specific information such as the delivered cost of coal, location and efficacy of sorbents, and effective value of the electricity produced can be used as input to the economic analysis to evaluate siting options and sorbent source options for such a power station."

"Interest in the recovery of cyanide from gold and silver plant tailings has heightened in recent years. This interest has been spurred by several factors:Increasingly stringent regulations throughout the gold producing world, governing discharge limits for free and total cyanide to tailings ponds and the environment.The increasing cost of active chemical treatment versus passive (natural degradation) treatment of tailing, to bring them in line with environmental regulations.The worldwide trend to processing of more complex gold ore bodies, which is usually accompanied by higher levels of cyanide consumptions and greater concentrations of cyanide (particularly the copper cyanide complex) in tailings.The growing negative perception of the general public for the gold mining industry, due to several highly publicized cyanide spills in recent years (breaches of tailings dams, accidents involving trucks carrying cyanide to gold plants, etc.).The ability to recover cyanide from gold plant tailings has been known almost as long as the cyanidation process has been practiced, but there has been little incentive to process tailings in this way in the past. With the development of technologies that make it possible to recover and recycle free or complexed cyanide directly from gold plant slurry tailings, which indicates, on paper at least, the potential for significant cost savings compared to cyanide destruction, coupled with the introduction of legislation to seriously limit the discharge of cyanide to the environment in most gold-producing regions of the world, many companies are evaluating the cyanide-recovery alternative."

The Chestnut Ridge Anticline is a prominent structure in southwestern Pennsylvania, USA. This structure has brought two economically valuable limestone formations to the surface, where they are easily accessible to room-and-pillar mining. Nine active crushed stone quarries, an underground research facility, and one industrial facility currently operate along the linear trend that represents the axis of the anticline. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has identified significant variation in levels of horizontal stress within relatively short distances at shallow overburdens along the anticline. At one quarry, the horizontal stress is high enough to shear strata with a modulus of approximately 77 Gpa. Conversely, zones of extension were observed in parts of another quarry, indicating very low horizontal stress conditions. This study found that high levels of horizontal stress are to be expected in this very stiff rock formation and that local geologic and topographic structures are capable of altering the magnitude and possibly the orientation of the horizontal stress field.

"Electrodeposition behavior of Zn-Cr alloys from the methanol baths was investigated. In the methanol baths of low Cr3+ concentration, Cr (III) compound was incorporated in the deposits and no lusfrous Zn-Cr alloys was deposited. However, Cr was existed as metallic state in the deposits obtained from the baths of higher Cr3+ concentration. With an increase in water content in the baths, the chemical state of Cr in the deposits changed from metallic to trivalent state. Under the condition that metallic Cr can be electrodeposited, Zn deposition was significantly polarized to the potential of Cr deposition.INTRODUCTIONAn attention has been paid to Zn-Cr alloy plated steel sheet because of its excellent properties for body panels of automobile and electrical appliances [1]-[4]. This plating process can be operated using the sulfate solutions containing Cr3+ ion [1] - [6].In decorative single Cr plating, on the other hand, many attempts have been made to electroplate Cr from trivalent electrolytes, which is motived by environmental deficiencies of the presently used hexavalent process [7]. [8]. However, it has been reported that in the aqueous solutions the behavior of the electroreduction of 0 3+ is atypical due to the complicated nature of the chemistry and electrochemistry of cr3+ species [9]-[11]. Even in Zn-Cr alloy plating, it is difficult to codeposit metallic Cr with Zn in simple sulfate electrolytes [l]-[4], [12]. Therefore, it can be expected that the electrodeposition behaviors of Zn-Cr alloys as well as Cr are significantly changed when the electrodeposition is conducted in non-aqueous plating solutions.In this study, the electrodeposition of Zn-Cr alloy was conducted from methanol solutions to clarify the electroreduction mechanism of Cr3·-Cr0 in the alloy deposition process."

During 1982 Ash Grove Cement Company contracted with Wagester, Walker, Thornton & Company to convert a Calcimatic rotating hearth kiln at its Portland, Oregon lime plant from gas/oil to coal firing. Increasing costs of natural gas and No. 6 fuel oil made this conversion mandatory if the plant was to remain competitive. Unique features of this project are 1) the distributors of pulverized coal to eighteen small burners around the inner and outer perimeters of the doughnut-shaped kiln, and 2) the attrition-dryer-pulverizer mill. Ash Grove, a century-old lime and cement producer headquartered in Overland Park, Kansas (Kansas City area), looked at various schemes for multiple burner firing before employing Wagester, Walker, Thornton & Company. W.W.T. of Pitts- burgh, Pennsylvania was formed in 1980 by acquiring the Solid Fuels Division of the Pullman Swindell Corporation. This division had been active in developing solid fuel firing for brick tunnel kilns, principally in the Southeast. They continue to supply such systems firing wood waste as well as coal to the brick industry and have also converted two Calcimatic lime kilns for Dixie Lime, Sumterville, Florida, a fluid bed calciner for Texas Gulf in Aurora, North Carolina, and a chrome concentrate kiln for Diamond Chemicals at Castle Hayne, North Carolina. Testing and a proposal have been made for INMETCO, Elwood City, Pennsylvania, on an annular hearth furnace for direct reduction of iron ore to metallic iron.

The health and safety of employees, efficiency of the operating system and production are paramount goals in underground coal mining. The section foreman assumes responsibility for making his part of the total system function to meet these goals. However, section foremen often have not been prepared to assume the full range of their responsibilities upon becoming a supervisor. This discussion addresses the full range of section foreman responsibilities and concomitant authority. Management principles that must be mastered by him are presented, and performance expectations as well as criteria for their evaluation are examined. The benefits realized from effective foreman training are discussed.

The distribution of low concentrations of Cr, Mn, Rh, Co, Ni, Ag and Fe between copper matte and bullion phases has been measured at 1200oC. These results. together with values for nine other elements, have been used to develop a simple model to describe the distributions in terms of known thermodynamic properties?. The Temkin model for ionic melts was assumed to apply to the sulphide species in the Cu-S matte? phase and it is shown that the choice of sulphide species is particularly important for successful representation of the experimental .results?. In general, the lowest sulphlde (minimum sulphur :. metal ratio)? formed by the. metal is most suitable, although Ni, Co, Rh and Pd appear to associate with more sulphur in the melt than suggested by the? composition of their lowest sulphide. A correlation between the composition of the metal sulphide species formed in the ternary system and the? position of the minimum in the free energy of mixing curve in the metal-sulphur binary -system is? proposed.

"Coal is a crucial feedstock for South Africa’s unique synfuels and petrochemicals from coal industry and it is used as the main feedstock to produce synthesis gas (CO and H2) via the Sasol-Lurgi Fixed Bed Dry Bottom gasification process. Detailed coal characteristics are essential to predict gasification behaviour when a specific coal source is to be gasified.The principle aim of this paper is to highlight and discuss those specific coal characteristics, which affect gasification behaviour and stability.In order to determine the suitability of a coal source for gasification purposes, the coal is characterized and the results compared with historical data. Benchmark data, where it was possible to operate the gasifier with ease and relatively high stability, is used as a reference.Coal sources with extreme properties (i.e. low reactivity, ash content <10% as is used by Dakota Gasification Company, or “brown coal” with moisture >30%) can probably be gasified in a Sasol-Lurgi Fixed Bed Dry Bottom gasifier provided that certain operational changes are implemented. Other properties, like high caking and extreme ash content for example, require blending to acceptable levels."

1. INTRODUCTION. AT the Lake Superior meeting, September, 1904, Messrs. A. Gibb and R. C. Philp presented a paper entitled " The Constitution of Mattes Produced in Copper Smelting,)&apos; in which they concluded that ferrous and cuprous sulphides formed the chemical compound, 5 Cu2S, fee. They arrived at this inference from the observed fact that a matte containing Cu2S, 90.4, and Fee, 9.6 per cent (or, in round figures, Cu2S, 90, and Fee, 10 per cent.), did not contain any metallic copper, while one with more than 10 per cent of FeS readily dissolved copper, and with less than this amount retained copper in mechanical suspension. Although they determined the melting-points of five mattes containing from 32.6 to 80.1 per cent of copper, they did not draw a freezing-point curve, as the necessary apparatus was not available. A microscopical examination of 11 polished samples, gave them a grayish-black field of very uniform appearance, except that 5 of the specimens showed the presence of metallic copper. The object of the present investigation was to supplement the above paper by drawing the freezing-point curve of the series ferrous sulphide cuprous sulphide, and to see how the constitution could be further, revealed by microscopical work. The results obtained lead to conclusions very different from those of Gibb and Philp. While their paper bears the date 1904, it was published only in 1906.2 In the meantime, Bolles3 had presented his paper, "The Concentration of Gold and Silver in Iron Bottoms."
