"Abstract- The mineralogy of samples from the Wellgreen Cu-Ni-Pt-Pd deposit, Yukon Territory, is complex and the metals of interest are contained within fme-grained minerais which vary in size and mineral associations from sample to sample.The major Ni carriers are pentlandite and violarite; the major Cu carrier is chalcopyrite. About 700Jo of the major Ni carriers and 78% of the major Cu qmier will be liberated at a grind of 80% -'}f,.7 J.Uil (-500 mesh) for typical low-grade gabbro (West zone, sample No. 1). For typical ""clinopyroxenite"" (West zone, sample No. 2) and typical ""clinopyroxene-rich peridotite"" (East zone, sample No. 3) the liberation would be 71""lo and 65% for Ni, 74% and 60% for Cu, respectively. Fine grinding, however, cannot liberate the Ni contained in silicates and pyrrhotite, estimated to total24.5% for typicallow-grade gabbro (West zone, sample No. 1), 15% for typical ""clinopyroxenite"" (West zone, sample No. 2), and 12% for typical ""clinopyroxene-rich peridotite"" (East zone, sample No. 3).The principal Pt carrier (sperrylite) varies considerably in grain-size between samples and fme grinding, required to liberate the major Ni and Cu carriers, may be counterproductive in samples where sperrylite is relatively coarse-grained, as sorne would then be unrecovered (e.g. sample No. 1). In addition, sperrylite in samples No. 2 and No. 3 is closely associated with magnetite.Palladium occurs in diverse ways. It occurs in the form of several Pd minerais (e.g. sudburyite, testibiopalladite, merenskyite), as a replacement for Ni in several tellurides, antimonides and tel­ lurantimonides (e.g. melonite), or as very low concentrations in pentlandite (up to 34 ppm), chal­ copyrite (up to 9 ppm), and pyrrhotite (up to 5.6 ppm). Palladium minerais and Pd-bearing minerals are strongly associated with chalcopyrite in sample No. 1 and will thus report to a Cu concentrate. However, 22% of the total Pd is in solid solution in pentlandite in this sample and will thus report to the Ni concentrate. In samples No. 2 and No. 3, less Pd occurs in solid solution in pentlandite, and the PGM are distributed mainly among pentlandite, chalcopyrite, and magnetite in sample No. 2, and among pentlandite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and magnetite in sample No. 3. Therefore, the feasibility of magnetic concentration should be investigated for samples like No. 2 and No. 3, in order to improve Pt and Pd recoveries.Rhodium was found to occur as rare hollingworthite, in sparse cobaltite (up to 2.7%) and, as low concentrations in chalcopyrite (to 10 ppm) and pentlandite (to 12 ppm) by proton microprobe. Iridium occurs in hollingworthite (up to 7.8%) and very rarely as the native metal or in an undefmed Re-Ir-Os-Ru alloy. Ruthenium was determined by proton microprobe analyses to occur in pentlandite (up to 13 ppm) and chalcopyrite (up to 10 ppm), in addition to rare laurite and Re alloy."

"5.1 IntroductionTraditional impactors do not offer much size resolution for submicrometer particles; typically their finest size cut is around 0.4 µ.m. Yet for many aerosol applications it is useful to be able to size segregate aerosols in the size range below 0.4 µ.m. Diesel emissions, welding fumes, cigarette smokes and photochemically generated smog aerosols typically exhibit mass median diameters between 0.1 and 0.6 µ.m. When sampling these aerosols with a traditional impactor, fifty percent or more of the aerosol mass can penetrate the final impactor stage. Allhough the material can still be collected on a backup filter, the filter gives no size resolution. As a result, the investigator has no size information on a substantial portion of the sample. One needs a sampler that size-segregates the majority of the aerosol mass. A lower size cut of 0.1 µ.m or less is required for most combustion smokes and smog aerosol s.To obtain smaller cutpoints two types of impactors have been developed, namely low-pressure impactors and micro-orifice impactors. Both instruments can provide cutpoints as small as 0.05 µ.m. Low-pressure impactors were introduced more than twenty years ago (Stem et al., 1962), and a variety of these samplers are in use today. Micro-orifice impactors have been developed at the University of Minnesota within the last five years (Marple et al., 1981 ). To date theirs are the only examples of these instruments in use.5.2 Operating PrinciplesThe low-pressure and micro-orifice impactors use two different approaches to achieve their very small particle-size cuts. Low pressure impactors resemble ordinary impactors, but are operated at reduced pressures of 5-40 kPa (0.05 - 0.4 atm). They take advantage of the decreased aerodynamic drag on particles that occurs when the mean free path in the air is as large or larger than the particle diameter. Micro-orifice impactors operate at near atmospheric pressure, but employ very small orifices, 40 µ.m to 200 µ.m in diameter. The streamlines of the air impinging upon the impaction plate have correspondingly smaller radii of curvature; the air is accelerated more quickly, making it more difficult for the particles to follow. The success of the minimization of blast induced-damage at Barrick?s Pierina Mine in Peru is the result of an effective working relationship between Mine Operations and the Geotechnical Services Department. A detailed design criteria manual is used to match the blast plan to the site?s varying rock types and slope designs. The Geotechnical Services Department has further developed a comprehensive pre- and post-blast checklist that is critical to the drilling and blasting process as it pertains to wall stability. Wall control blasts are evaluated with quality assurance field checks, vibration monitoring and frequency control, video assisted performance quantification and post excavation face profiling. These detailed observations are compiled and summarized in a blast performance evaluation that is considered to be an ?Industry Best Practice?. The information and detail provided by each performance summary allows accurate blast analysis and effective design refinement.

In the paper, the recovery technology of gallium from zinc-leaching residue by cold-bonded coal-based direct reduction process following magnetic separation was developed. The results show that the scattered metal Ga can be concentrated obviously after the reduction of zinc-leaching residue briquette and magnetic separation of reduced product. At the same time, the volatilization of Zn in the residue is enhanced during the reduction. When the residue, bear¬ing 18.60% Zu.21.18% Fe and 527 g/t Ga, was reduced with coal at 1100°C for 150 min, the results of Zn volatilization of 9842% and Ga recovery of 89. 10% were obtained in reduction. After magnetic separation of the reduced product, the concentration of Ga in sponge iron is 2164 g/t, and the separation recovery of Ga reaches 92.42%. The enriched mechanism of Ga during reduction -separation process was studied by using electron microscope, scanning elec¬tron microscope, energy spectrum and mineralogical analysis. The investigations show that there is no formation of independent phase of Ga during reduction process. The Ga occurs mainly in metallic iron phase (the concentration of Ga in metallic iron phase is 0.04%-0,4%), in addition, there exists a little Ga in poorly crystalline sulphide (o.08%-0./5Y& Ow). But Go does not exist in most of glass and silicate phase. The affinity of Ga for metallic iron is the enrichment basis of Go in reduction, and it is also in favor of recovering Go during magnetic separation. As part of the research effort of investigating the effects of microwave energy upon the chemical and physical properties of different minerals and ores, the Bureau of Mines has conducted basic research into identifying those properties of minerals that are affected by microwave energy, namely, the dielectric constant and loss tangent. These properties were determined utilizing the theory of microwave propagation in a coaxial waveguide filled with a dielectric material and measuring the input impedance with an RF impedance analyzer that operates from 1 MHz to 1 GHz. By knowing the microwave frequency and filling the waveguide with a powdered mineral, the dielectric properties of the mineral sample were determined. From these dielectric properties, theoretical microwave heating characteristics of each mineral could be calculated. These same mineral samples were then irradiated by a 915 MHz 30 kW variable power microwave oven and dielectric heating studies were performed. A comparison of the theoretical heating characteristics and the results from actual dielectric heating studies was conducted to evaluate the dielectric property measurements on each mineral. This report presents the results of the Bureau's research in identifying the dielectric properties of low-loss minerals according to the mineralogical classification scheme along with their irradiation studies. Though far from complete, this study represents some of the more frequently encountered low-loss minerals.

"Human factors (HFs) play an important role in the mining and mineral industry, affecting operational and maintenance efficiency and safety. Despite the introduction of new technologies and automation in this sector, it is well known that a significantly large proportion of total human errors occur during the operation and maintenance phase. A comprehensive literature review of HFs across several industries is provided. From this review, the impact of HFs on operation and maintenance is summarized, with a focus on what the mining industry is currently doing and what opportunities exist for additional improvements. Future research directions and themes are also identified.RÉSUMÉ Les facteurs humains (FH) jouent un rôle important dans l’industrie des mines et des minéraux, en ce qu’ils affectent l’efficacité et la sécurité de l’exploitation et de l’entretien. Malgré l’apparition de nouvelles technologies et de l’automatisation dans ce secteur, il est bien connu qu’une grande partie des erreurs humaines (EH) se produisent durant une phase d’exploitation et d’entretien. Cet article propose une analyse documentaire approfondie des FH dans plusieurs secteurs. L’impact des FH sur l’exploitation et l’entretien est résumé à partir de cette analyse, une attention particulière étant accordée à l’évolution de l’industrie minière et aux possibilités d’améliorer davantage ses activités. The current mining system is a people system, and inevitably HFs and human error (HE) figure prominently in all aspects of this industry. Treatment of refractory gold ores containing arsenic have always presented a major problem in their processing to recover the contained precious metal values. The major difficulties are concerned with lower recoveries, production of hazardous fumes, effluents and residues. Because of'these arsenic related problems, many otherwise economically attractive precious metal deposits and dumps all over the world are not exploited. In recent years, treatment processee for refractory gold ores and concentrates have been explored and a few commercial operations employing roasting or pressure leaching have resulted. Roasting has limitations due to environmental constraints related to off gases. Pressure leaching involving high temperatures (180% to 200%) and pressures (400 psi) is accompanied by high capital and operating costs. An alternate route to roasting for treating pyrite and arsenopyrite ores and concentrates ia the "lime-oxygen hydromet" process carried out at a moderate temperature (100%) and pressure (100 psi). A simplified process for treating such arsenic containing ores and concentrates utilizing low temperature and pressure oxidation is presented. This low cost treatment with compressed air and lime renders arsenic as an inert component in the residue, meeting all the requirements of the EPA Toxicity Test. The precious metal values are then extracted from the autoclaved residue by standard cyanidation. This paper discusses this new development.

The mine scheduling process defines a mining sequence across the life of the mine and stipulates the amount of ore, waste, and specific blocks to be mined each year so that the highest economic return can be obtained under a number of constraints. There are a number of mine scheduling software packages available. Each claims to be the best scheduler by maximizing Net Present Value (NPV) or by minimizing overall mining costs. These mine scheduling programs follow different procedures and scheduling philosophies based on either mathematical or heuristic principles. There was no study in which the mine production scheduling procedures applied by these packages were discussed and compared. This paper evaluates four open pit mine scheduling programs recently developed and compares them in order to determine if significant differences exist among them. The same input data, which consist of a 3-D block model, an economic set of parameters, and the initial surface topography for a operating copper mine in Southern Peru, was used to test each technique. The following programs were investigated with respect to their ability to optimize the NPV for the case study. 1) M821V1 Scheduler by Mintec; 2) NPV Scheduler by Earthworks; 3) Milawa Scheduler by Whittle Programming; and, 4) Fundamental Tree Scheduling Method (FTSM) developed at the Colorado School of Mines. The results from this case study demonstrate that the scheduling software packages, Mintec, Earthworks, and Whittle obtained similar NPV’s, while FTSM scheduler gave a six percent higher NPV than the other schedulers.

"The microwave reflection loss (RL) of ferric oxide is studied in the temperature range from 297 to approximately 1400 Kat frequencies of 915 and 2450 MHz. It is shown that the maximum microwave absorption with RL of -38.46 and -35.97 dB can be obtained for ferric oxide having thicknesses of 0.03 and 0.01 m at 915 and 2450 MHz, respectively. The maximum absorption peak with RL below -10 dB is in a 250 K temperature range from 723 to 973 Kat 915 MHz, which shifts to the range between 823 and 1073 K at 2450 MHz. This migration is in good agreement with the variation of the dielectric loss tangent of ferric oxide.IntroductionMicrowave irradiation has distinguishing characteristics such as volumetric and selective heating compared with conventional methods, leading to extremely broad applications in materials heating and processing [1-5].The efficiency of microwave heating was found to be dependent on various factors, such as microwave power [6], frequency [7,8], radiation time [8], applicator geometry [8], sample microwave absorption properties and position as well as dimension [9-11 ], etc. Among these parameters, sample dimension plays an important role but is usually neglected by researchers in microwave processing of materials. In fact, although numerous studies have been directed toward the utilization of microwave energy to assist materials heating and processing, few reports were released on the effect of sample dimension [12,13].This is because all aforementioned factors influencing microwave heating generally exert interactive effects to each other during the heating process, making clarification of the effect of sample dimension difficult. Therefore, it is necessary to propose a parameter or concept for quantifying the effect of absorber dimension on microwave heating, increasing heating efficiency."

"Underground coal mining in the U.S. is conducted in numerous regions where previous workings exist above and/or below an actively mined seam. Miners know that overlying or underlying fully extracted coal areas, also known as gob regions, can result in abutment stresses that affect the active mining. If there was no full extraction, and the past mining consists entirely of intact pillars, the stresses on the active seam are usually minimal. However, experience has shown that in some situations there has been sufficient yielding in overlying or underlying pillar systems to cause stress transfer to the adjoining larger pillars or barriers, which in turn, transfer significant stresses onto the workings of the active seam. In other words, the overlying or underlying pillar system behaves as a ""pseudo gob."" The presence of a pseudo gob is often unexpected, and the consequences can be severe. This paper presents several case histories, summarized briefly below, that illustrate pseudo gob phenomenon:• Pillar rib degradation at a West Virginia mine at 1100-foot (335 m) depth that contributed to a rib roll fatality.• Pillar rib deterioration at a Western Kentucky mine at 570-foot (175 m) depth that required pillar size adjustment and installation of supplemental bolting.• Roof deterioration at an eastern Kentucky mine at 1300- foot ( 400 m) depth that stopped mine advance and required redirecting the section development.• Coal burst on development at an eastern Kentucky mine at 1700-foot (520 m) depth that had no nearby pillar recovery.• Coal burst on development at a West Virginia mine at the relatively shallow depth of 1100 feet (335 m) that also had no nearby pillar recovery.The paper provides guidance so that when an operation encounters a potential pseudo gob stress interaction the hazard can be mitigated based on an understanding of the mechanism encountered.INTRODUCTIONThe U.S. underground coal mining industry has conducted mining in multiple seam environments, where the active mining has underlying or overlying old workings at varying interburden distances, throughout its history. Often no serious consequences arise from the multiple seam mining. However, sometime mines have been confronted with hazards from underlying or overlying workings that include localized roof and rib failure, pillar system failures through propagating roof falls and floor heave, and also pillar bursts."

THE term "total operation" is meant to include problems that cannot be answered from the standpoint of either the blast furnace or the open hearth separately but must be studied by considering the interrelations of these two processes. There are other ways of expressing this idea, such as reference to the blast furnace and the open hearth as an integrated process or by emphasizing the interrelation and interaction of the two processes. Much progress has been made in metallurgy and other fields by breaking complicated processes and reactions into simpler parts and studying each of these intensively. This intensive study frequently is done under the controlled conditions of the laboratory experiment. The entire process is understood better by this specialized study of each of its parts. This procedure is so satisfactory that an understanding of unit operations is a fundamental requirement of chemical engineering. Much discussion of the open-hearth process is in terms of one heat or one furnace. By this is meant that the conclusions apply to one furnace, wherever it may be. Furnaces seldom occur singly; they are located in groups and these groups are located in steel plants having characteristic blast-furnace equipment. Problems that are affected by the number of furnaces operating, by the number of blast furnaces in the plant and by the fact that the open hearth shop is dependent on the blast-furnace capacity rather than on its own needs for the amount of iron available are among those which, in contrast to "unit operations," we have chosen to call "total operations," Many of these problems, such as charging delays and the general mechanical problem of material handling, are so familiar that merely to define "total operations" brings them to mind. These problems are of such importance that already they have received careful thought and study and probably will merit further study. As will be shown later, these mechanical problems are so intimately related to metallurgical problems of total operations that the effect of certain changes cannot be ascribed with certainty to either a mechanical or a metallurgical cause entirely. Although the problems coming under the general term of "railroading" are included in the problems of total operations, two others are selected for the discussion of this paper. One of these is strictly a problem of composition; the other is strictly a problem of tonnage production. The problem of phosphorus is present whenever basic open-hearth slag is used in the blast-furnace burden. This practice has not secured universal acceptance chiefly because of difference in preference for high-manganese or low-manganese pig iron. This report on the properties of burner-fuel oils produced during 1956 was issued under a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, at the request of the Oil-Heat Institute of America and the petroleum industry. This survey is the second for this type of fuel, the first being made in 1955. 2/ The surveys are conducted to provide information on the characteristics of burner-fuel oils now manufactured for sale. They are similar in pattern to the diesel-fuel surveys, conducted since 1950, 3/ and are not intended to conflict with but rather to supplement them. The importance of fuel oil has resulted in the need for more information by the petroleum industry, manufacturers of heating appliances, and consumers regarding the types and qualities of the fuels currently being marketed. Samples of burner-fuel oil typical of their manufacture during the early part of 1956 were analyzed by the refiners in accordance with instructions from the subcommittee on fuel surveys of the Automotive Research Committee of the American Petroleum Institute, Results of the analyses were transmitted to the Bureau of Mines where the data were studied and compiled as shown in the tables of this report.

Chemical and mineralogical characterization of Malaysian monazite, a phosphate mineral, bearing rare earth elements separated from the tin tailings originated from Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia, was performed in this paper. The study aims to collect detailed information on the chemical composition, crystal phases, and microstructure of the mineral monazite concentrate that would aid to optimize the subsequent hydrometallurgical processes for high-efficient separation of thorium and other associated rare earth elements. A systematic characterization study of the concentrate was conducted using techniques such as optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). These techniques analyzed the morphological details on the surface, elemental analysis, and mineral association assessment and identified the surface functionalization groups. The bulk composition and the mineral phases in which the elements are present were studied by wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WD-XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies respectively. The XRF analysis confirmed the presence of Ce, La, Nd, Pr, and Y (rare earth oxides: REO’s ~ 60 wt.%) while thorium dioxide (ThO2) accounted for 7 wt.% of the total composition. Traces of Ca, K, Al, Fe, Ti, and Mn were also confirmed by SEM elemental mapping. The XRD results confirmed that the concentrate was primarily composed of monazite (Ce, La, Nd, Th (PO4)) along with minor impurity phases of quartz. Automated mineralogical analysis was used as a confirmatory tool to corroborate the preliminary evidences. Based on the particle size distribution analysis supported by SEM, the majority of monazite grains were found to be present in the size range of 170–210 μm. Strong bands of PO4 and SiO4 were observed in the IR spectra corresponding to the phospho-silicate matrix of the REE mineral.

Following completion of planned mining operations at the Goldcorp Dome Open Pit Mine, a high-grade Shaft Pillar located in the pit highwall was recovered. Mining of this Shaft pillar faced numerous rock engineering design and implementation challenges due to its remote position on the highwall and the presence of mine workings within the wall. The case example presented in this paper discusses the geotechnical investigation performed at the site, novel measures undertaken for installation of ground support required for rockmass reinforcement and for worker protection, as well as operational challenges to successful mining of the Shaft Pillar.

Continuous monitoring of mining impacts on the surrounding environment is a necessary sustainability criterion. Traditional monitoring approaches such as in situ sampling and airborne and satellite-based remote sensing have several limitations. Over the past few decades, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have evolved into popular platforms for remote sensing. UAV-based remote sensing has been successfully applied in different sectors, including agriculture, forestry, urban environments and disaster management. However, the potential of UAVs for mine environmental monitoring has not yet been fully established. Bond, in the introduction to his paper on Wear and Size Distribution of Grinding Balls, freely states that the mathematical immaturity of the grinding process "is the cause of many inefficient designs and installations as well as of much poorly oriented experimental work", and evidently he sees the solution of all our grinding problems in the discovery of the fundamental laws "which can change the empirical art into a mathematically exact science". While the writer is in complete agreement with Mr. Bond that grinding is governed by fundamental laws which can be expressed by mathematical formulae, there are so many variables in grinding, all interwoven with each other and mutually influencing each other, that the coalescing and merging of all these variables into a harmonious mathematical whole appears to be a homeric job. However, a light appeared on the horizon when it was proposed that power be used as an index of the grinding operation. It is pertinent to quote Gow, Guggenheim, Campbell, and Coghill from their paper on Ball Milling, in which they say: "Much of the past literature devoted to the subject has been concerned with the Kick-Rittinger dispute over evaluating grinding, or with dissertations on ball paths and the closely allied impact versus attrition hypotheses or with the exclusive consideration of certain specific variables, such as mill speed or circulating load, irrespectve of the other factors in operation. Such subjects may be dismissed with but little discussion in what may be called, by comparison a new philosophy in the stud of ball milling. Briefly this 'new philosophy' consists ' of using power as an index of the mill operation, and investigating grinding from the standpoint of set and induced variables with emphasis on the latter". But it is safe to assume that it was the work by E.W. Davis, H. E. T. Haultain, F. C. Dyer, A: M. Gaudin, J. Gross, S. R. Zimmerley, and others, that cleared the path for the authors of Ball Milling and induced them and A. W. Fahrenwald to look farther afield and thus to establish a far-reaching relationship between the power and capacity and the diameter of the ball-mills.

Hydroseparation (http://www.cnt-mc.com) was used to concentrate sized fractions (from <38 ¦m to 150 ¦m) of various ore products ahead of carbon-in-pulp (CIP)-treatment. The resulting size-by-size concentrates were mounted as monolayer polished sections and subjected to automated unattended precious metal searches by image analysis (see Lastra, Wilson and Cabri, 1999). Systematic variations in Au-deportment permit quantification of Au reporting as discrete grains from fresh-feed through to pressure oxidation (POX)- and CIP-feed. Application of hydroseparation, image analysis and assays to characterising tailings (from <10 ¦m to 106 ¦m) from four mine sites is also described. Results are encouraging enough to predict that the combination of hydroseparation (HS) and automated image analysis could become a standard methodology for study of precious metal ores and metallurgical products.

During the 1990s, wider and more productive longwall panels were being introduced into the Newcastle Coalfield. The strata of the Newcastle Coalfield incorporate numerous massive sandstones and conglomerates, some of which formed the immediate roof of the coal seams being mined. The unexpected implications of introducing wider panels into this geological environment included more variable and increased subsidence, severe periodic weighting (with associated mid-face falls) as well as windblast.Subsidence prediction at the time was based on empirically derived data essentially relating subsidence to the width/depth ratio of the panel without accounting for actual widths, nor the impacts of variable geology. This approach required modification as locally derived data was gathered and reinterpreted.The interaction of massive strata located close to the roof of the mined seam resulted in dramatic implications for some of the operations. When associated with longwall goaf geomechanics severe periodic weighting events and crippling mid-face roof falls were the consequence. When associated with narrower panels and shortwall goaf geomechanics, mines in the region experienced aggressive windblast events. The relationships between the overlying massive strata, longwall panel geometry and the various risks encountered during this period is in the author’s opinion, the most concise still documented.As the extensive coalfields of Queensland turn to underground mining operations the relevance of these experiences cannot be underestimated. This paper will discuss recent developments as well as incorporating diverse subjects such as microseismic monitoring, low frequency radio emissions and ‘electrophonics’ as they relate also to the topic.Like Moriarty, massive strata can be disguised and can offend when you least expect. This paper documents a trail of crimes committed by conglomerate in the Newcastle Coalfield that were inflicted on the general public, miners and mining equipment. Although this paper concentrates on the criminal behaviour of conglomerate, this story is also relevant to other massive units such as coarse sandstones that may be more difficult to identify and apprehend.
