THE QUARTETTE Mine near Searchlight, NV, a mine that first operated in the 1890s, could begin processing ore again by September. Jetco Enterprises Inc. plans to work through the tailings and ore close to the surface followed by plans for an openpit mine. It is one of at least three new mining efforts in the region, the Associated Press reported. Another is north of Searchlight, with yet another across the Colorado River in Arizona, east of Bullhead City. Gold mining is rare in southern Nevada. The area generally lacks the rock type that contains gold deposits. Restrictions on federal wilderness areas and protections for the desert tortoise also play a role. Gold veins in the region are generally small and erratic in length and height, Bill Durbin, a geologist and chief of southern Nevada operations for the Nevada Division of Minerals told the Associated Press. L.R. Tad Tinnell, president of Jetco Enterprises, has long eyed the mine. From 1993 to 1995, he explored and drilled on the property, which was still owned by Searchlight Mercantile.

The yttrium-manganese system has been investigated by thermal, metallographic, and X-ray diffraction methods. There are three intermetallic compounds present: YMn2 which melts congruently, YMn4, which undergoes syntectic decomposition, and YMn,, which undergoes peritectic decomposition. The compound YMn4 is ferromagnetic at room temperature with a Curie temperature of 214°C. There are eutectics at 25.2, 60.9, and 82.0 wt pct Mn which melt at 878°, 1100°, and 1075°C, respectively. Crys-tallographic data are given for YMn4, and YMn12 . The terminal solid solubilities are low. In a general program of study of yttrium metal in this laboratory some alloy systems of this metal with elements of the first transition period have been examined. This work was originally instigated by experiences in cladding yttrium with jackets of some protective metals such as Inconel for high-temperature service in air.' In some cases a low-melting phase was observed to form between the Inconel and the yttrium resulting in failure of the samples. In characterizing this reaction, a survey was made of the systems of yttrium with chromium, manganese, iron and nickel,, and it was found that a eutectic was formed between these metals and yttrium on the yttrium-rich side of the system. This present study of the Y-Mn system was carried out to examine in more detail the alloying nature of yttrium, and to correlate trends that have been observed in previous related studies. It was observed by Voge13 that in the systems of lanthanum, cerium, and praseodymium with each of the metals in the first transition series, the tendency to form compounds diminished in the order nickel, cobalt, and iron while no compounds were formed with manganese, chromium, or titanium. Beaudry and Daane4 observed a similar behavior in the systems of yttrium with some members of the first transition series except that the tendency for compound formation was greater. Both the Y-Ti5 and Y-Cra systems consist of simple eutectics, while in the Y-Fe,7 Y-CO, and Y-Ni4 systems, there are four, eight, and nine compounds, respectively. In addition to the above trends, the similar atomic radii and electronegativities of yttrium and thorium invite a comparison between their alloying behaviors with a common element such as manganese. In crys- tallographic studies, Florio et al.' have identified three intermediate phases in this system which are ThMn2, Th6Mn23, and ThMn,,. Gschneidner and Waber10 have examined published information on alloy systems of the rare-earth metals and have correlated this information with current alloying theory. From their study, they predicted that the Y-Mn system would contain one intermetallic compound. On the basis of this prediction, the trend in the alloying behavior of yttrium with the elements of the first transition series and the alloying behavior of thorium with manganese, one might expect from one to three intermetallic compounds to form in the Y-Mn system. A consideration of Hume-Rothery's rules of alloying based on size-factor, electronegativity, and valency suggested a small terminal solubility and possible compound formation. The present study was undertaken to confirm these predictions of low terminal solid solubility and compound formation and to establish the general alloying behavior of yttrium with manganese. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The manganese used in this investigation was obtained from the Foote Mineral Co. as electrolytic plates of 99.9 pct stated purity; the yttrium metal was prepared in this laboratory. Table I gives the analyses of these materials. For the solubility studies at the yttrium-rich end of the alloy system, distilled yttrium, whose major impurity was 200 ppm Ti, was used. Preparation of Alloys. The alloys were formed by comelting the two metals in an are-melting furnace under an atmosphere of argon. The buttons thus formed were inverted and remelted three to five times to promote homogeneity. Due to the high vapor pressure of manganese, it was assumed that the weight lost during are-melting was all manganese. In 1961. American Smelting and Refining Company was conducting exploration for lead in southeastern Missouri using several geophysical methods. Electrical methods were used in almost every hole drilled during this period. These methods met with only limited success, with one exception. This paper deals with that exception: An Electrical Potential Method used at a single hole to indicate direction to better mineralization. This method was notably successful in the program.

THE paper by C. H., Lieb on the "Economics of Oil-Producing Practice" (June issue, M. & M.) contains much food for thought. The engineers should be gratified that an executive with Mr. Lieb's. responsibility should recognize their standing in the industry. Yet after giving them that recognition, he proceeds to spur them on to greater accomplishments by pointing out that their job is only partly done and in some instances poorly done. The operating policies in this paper when applied to new pools with flowing wells are sound. Neither do I take exception to their application to pumping wells. But I do wish to comment on what lie says about price when applied to the many more wells that are approaching abandonment that is, the small producing wells. Mr. Lieb states in effect that higher prices would be detrimental from the long range viewpoint. I doubt that the present prices of crude will provide an ample return from the hundreds of thousands of small wells that have possibilities of substantial recovery by means of water-flooding, repressuring with gas, and air drive. Probably expenditure for experimental work can he justified, but at this time it must usually be considered as experimental. Recently I visited a property where it was estimated that $250,000 would be spent on a 160-acre tract for flooding purposes. The rate of r e t n r n and amount of profit at today's prices are uncertain. It can be argued that if this type of recovery is not economic with crude at $1 then it can he delayed as it is now possible to secure economically an ample supply of crude from our flush fields. Nearly all of the present schemes for treating complex (i. e. lead-silver-zinc-copper) ores are based on the idea that lead holds, and will hold for some time, the strongest economic place from the viewpoint of supply and demand of all the non-ferrous metals. Copper, it is thought, will come back to its own when European affairs are stabilized, although at that time competition from Chile, Peru, and Katanga, in particular, will be more severe than in pre-war days. The future for silver and for zinc is uncertain. New uses are developing for zinc, and the market has remained better than many expected, but the stabilization of world markets will bring in foreign competition instead of relief. The cost of producing zinc from simple zinc ores, by the retort process, will, from the nature of the labor required and the increasing cost of fuel, increase steadily. As a result, the small producers of purely zinc ores around Joplin are shutting down their mines, even with a good market price for zinc; on the other hand, the producer of lead from complex ores, in the Rocky Mountain states, is confident of a profit from the sale of his lead, and is seeking means to make the zinc in his ore pay some part of the cost of treatment. However, the tonnage costs for mining and ore dressing are much higher in the Rocky Mountain states, as may be seen by comparing tax-return statements from the various states. Even before the recent drop in the price of silver, many mines were operating on a very slender margin of profit; labor and supplies cost more. Mining at greater depth has shown most orebodies to grow increasingly more complex, so that improvements in mining and ore-dressing practice have not been sufficient to compensate for the additional expense involved in beneficiating these ores. The depletion of high-grade phosphate ores is bringing about a search for a suitable, economically viable technique that con process the abundant low-grade phosphate reserves. About 75% to 80% of the world's low-grade phosphate reserves are associated with carbonate gangue that is not amenable to treatment by the simple techniques of physical separation. The processing of sedimentary dolomitic/calcareousphosphate ore has numerous problems, including similar surface properties of the carbonate and phosphate. Two-stage reverse anionic flotation of carbonates (dolomite/calcite) has appeared to be a promising separation technique ,for the removal of carbonates from sedimentary rock phosphate. In reverse fatty-acid anionic flotation, the depression of phosphate mineral with orthophosphoric acid produces satisfactory results for calcareous as well as dolomitic phosphate ores from several locations of sedimentary origin.

The high temperature hydrochloric acid leaching of titanium slag in the QIT upgraded slag process (UGS) creates a harsh environment for materials of construction. Because of their excellent chemical and heat resistance, furan mortars are a key component in the lining system of the UGS pressure leach reactors. Similar products coming from different manufacturers have however shown unequal performances in service. In some cases, cracking of the brick lining has occurred during curing of the mortar. This study was initiated to investigate the impact of the curing conditions on the properties of carbon filled furan mortars. Laboratory tests were conducted to assess the effects of temperature and exposure to water and HCl solutions on mortar shrinkage and mechanical properties (tensile, compressive and bond strength). Three commercial furan mortars that have been used in the UGS leach reactors were thus characterized. Mortar properties were found to vary significantly among the products tested. Moreover, the curing conditions were shown to have a significant impact on mortar shrinkage and mechanical strength. The experimental findings provide explanations for the unequal performances of the mortars in service and for the problems of brick lining cracking that occurred in the UGS leach reactors. This study demonstrates that excessive mortar shrinkage compromises the integrity of a brick lining system.

Access to secure and reliable water resources is fundamental to the minerals industry. In recognition of that requirement, and cognisant of extensive contemporary public water debate and reform initiatives in Australia, the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) approached the Ministerial Council on Mineral and Petroleum Resources (MCMPR) proposing the establishment of a Joint Working Group to prepare a framework of strategic principles to ensure responsible water management at a site and corporate level, manage risks and identify opportunities. The Framework provides high-level guidance on issues that should be addressed in water decision making across Australia in relation to mining and associated processing operations. It identifies principles and objectives for adoption in four areas, viz: valuing water, strategic water planning, implementation, and engaging stakeholders. Given the high level nature of the Framework, and its national application, it does not seek to replicate detailed guidelines already widely available in each state and territory on operational water management practices and associated regulatory issues at mine sites. The Framework includes a series of case studies from across Australia that demonstrate where strategic thinking, wise water management and close consultation with stakeholders has delivered better water use, more profitable operations and excellent community/stakeholder relationships. The Framework was formally launched on behalf of MCMPR by the Western Australian Minister for Resources at the MCAÆs Sustainable Development Conference in Perth in October 2006. Of the many angles from which coal can be studied it is evident that some have a direct and others have only an indirect bearing on its physical or chemical nature . The more drastic the treatment employed in an investigation , the more inferential become the conclusions permissible from the experimental evidence obtained . Thus , ultimate and proximate analyses tell something concerning age , behavior on carbonization , and possible industrial usefulness , but nothing regarding structure or composition in the larger sense . Strong oxidation reveals the fact that benzenoid , pyrrol , and furane rings are prevalent in the chemical substances present , and milder oxidation indicates that the mass of coal , as in the case of the peats and lignites , is humic in character . But beyond such points of information , very little additional can be gained by the use of these more or less vigorous measures . To gain wider knowledge of the actual constituents of coal substance as found investigators have worked out systems of separation by means of solvents , of which a large number have been employed at various times both singly and in combination . The list of solvents includes petroleum ether , benzene , toluene , xylene , ethyl ether , alcohol , acetone , carbon bisulphide , pyridine , quinoline , aniline , phenol , tetralin , glycol ethyl ether glycol ethylether acetate , glycol methyl ether , glycol diethyl ether , pine oil , mesityl oxide furfural , benzaldehyde , ethylene oxide , rosin , caustic potash in solvents , amyl alcohol plus pyridine , chloroform , carbon tetrachloride , acetylene tetrachloride , naphthalene , and others . Once a coal has been extracted it has become common practice to subdivide the extract by means of partial solution in other and weaker solvents . Thus , we find the oily and solid bitumens of Fischer ( 1 ) , 3 Bone ( 2 ) and others ; the alpha , beta and gamma constituents of Wheeler ( 3 ) ; the classification of Novak and Hubacek ( 4 ) embracing oils , resins A , resins B , bitumens An , bitumens Bn , and bitumens Cn ; Crussard's ( 5 ) malthenes , asphaltenes , and carbenes , borrowed from asphalt terminology; and the 40 or more subdivisions of the phenol extract of coal worked out by Frazer and Hoffman ( 6 ) . Perhaps the primary object of interest in these many researches has been to find the coking principle of coal , and to study it and to learn why certain coals form hard , wellfused cokes , and others merely fall to pieces during carbonization . The origin of the various constituents of the gas and tar , the temperature at which each forms , and something of the mechanism of their synthesis have also been sought , as well as new bases for adjudging rank .

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the more significant coals in Dickenson County, Va. It is one in a series planned to determine which coals are suitable for the production of metallurgical coke either as mined or after beneficiation. Nearly 4 million tons of coal was produced in Dickenson County in 1955, of which approximately 2.7 million tons was cleaned mechanically in 5 cleaning plants. The Federal Geological Survey has estimated that nearly 1,300 million tons of measured and indicated coal reserves remained in the county as of January 1, 1951.

DESPITE the widespread occurrence of scheelite in Canada, domestic production of this strategic mineral is still quite insufficient to meet wartime needs. Two difficulties have invariably arisen in prospecting for or developing scheelite deposits: scheelite is a difficult mineral to identify, and secondly, its distribution is commonly so erratic that the value of a deposit cannot be determined without arduous and expensive methods of sampling and wet assay. Scheelite's property of fluorescing under certain ultra-violet lamps overcomes the first difficulty and is the basis for a quantitative method developed to overcome the second. It is found that, by use of an ultra-violet lamp, the value of many scheelite deposits may be accurately and speedily determined. The method requires neither elaborate apparatus nor exceptional skill on the part of the operator, and is most applicable to those deposits where the bulk of the scheelite occurs in fairly pure aggregates that are at least one-tenth of an inch across. It has been used in grading some two hundred scheelite-bearing veins in the Yellow-knife-Beaulieu region, Northwest Territories, and various occurrences in the Porcupine district, Ontario. The method requires the measurement of the total area of scheelite exposed in any reasonably large measured cross-section of a deposit. From the areal percent of scheelite so obtained, the tungstic oxide (WO,) content of that part of the deposit may be calculated by means of equations of simple derivation.

Due to both turbulence and the highly variable geometry of castings, a realistic numerical simulation of the metal flow is prohibitvely expensive with current technology. However, when the chief purpose is to achieve realistic thermal fields a precise How simulation is not necessarily required. In this paper we assume a laminar flow regime and obtain the flow field by solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations using a velocity-pressure segregated semi-implicit finite element method. The free metal surface is predicted by advecting a pseudo-concentration function via the computed How field. This involves an explicit finite element solution of a pure advection equation. The thermal field is calculated by solving the convective-diffusive energy equation by an explicit finite element method using the computed flow field and the location of the free surface. All the advection terms are discretized using a Taylor-Galerkin method. The interface between the metal and mould is modelled using special interface elements. The model is demonstrated by solving practical example problems. The results show that a sharp thermal front is maintained during the course of filling without excessive diffusion. The heat diffusion in the mould can be controlled by varying the metal mould heat transfer coefficient.

El yacimiento minero de Yauricocha cuenta con un área de exploraciones donde se ha encontrado material de afloramiento con terrones de oro y concentraciones de plata. Con la finalidad de seleccionar una alternativa que beneficie el tratamiento de estos minerales, se inició un programa experimental que evalúa el proceso de lixiviación en pilas a nivel piloto. En este sentido, el presente texto analiza la correlación de parámetros existente entre las diferentes escalas de experimentación que van desde el nivel de laboratorio hasta el pilotaje, a fin de plantear formulaciones matemáticas que faciliten el escalamiento de data y racionalizen mejor el proceso de lixiviación en pilas.

Over two dozen Resin-in-Pulp (RIP) plants have been in operation in the fonner Soviet Union since the beginning of 1970. Currently approximately 50% of the gold produced in Russia, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, which equates roughly to 10% of the total world output, is recovered using the RIP technology. An alternative to activated carbon, ion-exchange resin has several advantages for the recovery of gold. Resins are less prone to clay or organic foul­ing and do not require thennal regeneration. They also have poten­tially higher loading capacities, faster adsorption kinetics, and are more resistant to abrasion. The original Russian RIP process was based on engineering expertise developed for uranium ore pro­cessing and has a few major drawbacks. The biggest problem is an 18-30 day resin stripping process, which results in a huge gold lock-up. The problem was recently overcome by the development of a new stripping technology which cuts the time to 12-24 hours. Currently, there is rather limited practical knowledge of the Russian RIP process in the West, but often Western mining com­panies developing gold mines in the fonner Soviet Union are hard pressed by their local joint venture partners to take a serious look into RIP. It is probably only a matter of time before one of these companies will cross Soviet technology with Western engineering and develop a modem RIP process as an attractive option to the current CIP and CIL technologies.

Canadian mining research has recently been reinvigorated through a pan-Canadian research strategy driven by the industry, the research community and government departments. These organisations have come together to form the Canada Mining Innovation Council, whose role is to focus and increase mining research in the country. One of the major themes of the organisation is environment; including major research initiatives on energy, tailings and environmental stewardship. Other major initiatives on exploration, mineral extraction and mineral processing will also consider environmental benefits in the research projects they undertake. All the initiatives have their priorities determined principally by the mining and exploration companies, whose first obligation is to determine the long-term research priorities of the industry as a whole, rather than for their individual companies. Only after industry consensus on priorities does the research community become engaged in the implementation of specific projects to address those identified priorities. A goal of the program is to effectively create a virtual mining research laboratory, by engaging all the major research centres in the country. Membership to date includes most of the major mining companies operating in Canada and almost all of the mining-related universities. "Copper and cadmium are removed from the zinc sulphate solution in primary purification by cementation reaction followed by filtration. The solids are sent to the cake leach section where zinc and cadmium are recovered from the copper rich slurry. The copper solids from cake leach are filtered, bagged and sold. In order to achieve a lower cadmium copper cake, an altered process flow is suggested. It is proposed the primary purification be split into two steps for individual removal of copper and cadmium. INTRODUCTIONCopper cake is a product of primary purification, also known as copper and cadmium removal. Copper and cadmium are removed by cementation reaction in four stirred reaction tanks. The slurry is then filtered through Shriver manual plate and frame presses with the solution advancing to the next stage of purification, hot zinc purification (HZP). The solids from primary purification are further processed at the cake leach section where zinc and cadmium are separated from the copper rich slurry. Cadmium and zinc are dissolved in the cold cake leach tanks using spent electrolyte. Cadmium is recovered from this cadmium rich solution by cadmium sponging, leaching and electro-winning circuits. The residue from this cold leach step is further leached using spent electrolyte at a temperature of 85°C. The copper rich solids from hot cake leach are filtered on a drum filter and bagged in 1 ton bulk bags for shipping to buyers.Current assays of copper cake are shown in Table 1. The goal is to produce a copper cake product that is below 0.5% cadmium."

While the new Minister of Economic Development sends his apologies at being unable to speak at this Conference, I am delighted to present on his behalf. The Ministry of Economic Development is not only responsible for managing the Crown mineral estate, but also for developing initiatives and policies to promote regional economic development and for managing the GovernmentÆs broader economic development strategy. IÆd like to talk to you today about the critical links that need to exist between these three areas.   I am going to start with a question for all of you. What do these towns have in common? +        Waiuku, +        Thames, +        New Plymouth, +        Nelson, +        Greymouth, +        Arrowtown, +        Reefton, +        Palmerston, and +        Dunedin.   The answer is minerals. These towns were nearly all founded on the back of minerals and mining. In the case of Greymouth it was gold that brought the people to the mouth of the Grey River and it is coal that sustains the town.   In 1870 the town of Shortland had 20 000 people, 90 hotels and was twice the size of Auckland. We now know Shortland as Thames, and of course Auckland is considerably larger. One wonders whether the good folk of Shortland suffered from ætraffic jamsÆ with 90 pubs to navigate between. Gold mining in the Aorere River near Collingwood led early entrepreneurs to develop the land surrounding Nelson as a food basket to sustain the mining population. Nelson is still thriving on this legacy today. The town of Palmerston was founded in 1862 as a stopping point for gold miners heading into central Otago. The gold rush made Dunedin New ZealandÆs first highly industrialised city. Reefton on the West Coast was the first town in New Zealand to have electric lights and in the recent past we were wondering whoÆd be left to turn them off. New Plymouth, and Waiuku are still known as energy and mining centres.   By contrast once thriving towns like Capleston, Canvastown and Blackball are just names on a map now, and at the extreme you have places like Waiuta which has been reclaimed by the West Coast forest. Queenstown was built off the back of the gold rush, but by 1900 with the gold gone, only 190 people lived there yet Queenstown has managed to rebuild itself thanks to some other stunning natural assets. These examples help illustrate three key points that I am sure will each be extensively linked with our minerals and mining industries. First, NZÆs development and that of its regions has been, and continues to be, inextricably linked with our minerals and mining industries.   Second, things change. Sectors, regions and countries must continually adapt and improve if the are to avoid the fate of the Waiutas of this world. And third, the development challenges faced by NZ and its mining industry in the 21st century are vastly more complex than in the past. Governments and industry alike must balance and respond to a range of domestic and international environmental, cultural, economic and other interests and considerations. If you thought of your industry as æjust digging holes in the groundÆ then you may as well simply stick your head in one!

Lithium-Ion batteries (LIBs) have the potential to go into thermal runaway which introduces a new ignition source in hazardous environments such as gassy underground mines that may contain methane in the surrounding air. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) used an accelerating rate calorimeter (ARC) to induce thermal runaway in individual lithium-titanium-oxide (LTO) and lithium-nickel-cobalt-aluminum-oxide (NCA) LIB cells within a sealed enclosure with either no methane, a lean, a stoichiometric, or a rich methane-air mixture in the surrounding canister to determine if these LIB types would ignite the methane, causing an additive effect on overpressures. Canister pressures and maximum temperatures reached by the cells, surrounding air, and exhausted gases were measured in this study and remained consistent with varying methane concentrations.
