"The processing of ore containing rare earth elements leads to the production of an impure solution of these elements. The separation of the rare earths from the impurities and the production of individual elements is usually carried out by solvent extraction. The effectiveness of the extraction conditions and of the reagents is generally tested in the laboratory. This paper deals with the processing of results from solvent extraction laboratory tests planned to generate data redundancy. A method is proposed to take advantage of the data redundancy by accounting for the pH variation during the extraction. The parallel processing of several tests also allows estimating the equilibrium constants for the extraction. The proposed method produces equilibrium constants that are more reproducible than values estimated using conventional approaches. The method is illustrated with solvent extraction tests conducted on synthetic solutions of rare earth elements.INTRODUCTIONThe processing of ores containing rare earth elements (REE) usually includes the production of a concentrate of the minerals carrying the REE. These minerals, for instance monazite and bastnäsite, contain the 14 elements from La to Lu plus yttrium and scandium. As an example monazite has the general formula of (La,Ce,Pr,Nd,Sm,Eu,Gd,Tb,Dy…Lu)PO4 with a typical lanthanum content of 20-26%, cerium content of 40-50%, praseodymium of 4-6%, neodymium of 16 to 20%, and decreasing concentrations of heavier elements (Gupta & Krishnamurthy, 2005). During the processing of a REE mineral, it is generally not possible to isolate and separate a single REE from all the rest. The mineral molecules need to be broken (usually via a heat treatment followed by leaching with a base and/or an acid) to produce an aqueous solution of the REE of the ore. After purification of the solution, the REE can be precipitated as a bulk concentrate and sold to a refinery that separates the REE into particular groups of REE such as the light versus heavy REE or into individual elements such as lanthanum, neodymium, or europium oxides to yield value-added products."

"Water quality and quantity at the Tailing Thickening Section of processing plants is considered to be a crucial factor and impacts the performance of several sections. Therefore, gaining stable and effective performance at the Tailing Thickener Section is one of the principal goals of minerals processing plants. Different factors such as: qualitative and quantitative sustainability of plant feed, the balance between the mass of input and output water flow, the dissolving method and distribution of flocculant and the amount of dirt, solid percent of thickener inlet pulp, affect the performance of Tailing Thickener. The present study investigates the successful improvement of Tailing Thickener performance at Jalal Abad Hematite Iron Ore Concentrate plant through optimizing the above operational parameters. For this purpose, the following optimizations have been done: homogeneity and sustainability of plant input feed rates, fine pulp removal collected by the bag filters at the input of the thickener, adding an quietness box before moving the tail pulp into the thickener to reduce the pulp turbulence, replacing flocculant pump and injection pipes, improving water mass balance which leads to optimizing and stabilizing the concentration of input tail pulp into the thickener, adding a mixer to increase the flocculant preparation time, increasing the locations for adding flocculant to thickener from 1 point to 6 points. Applying the above modifications and monitoring the Tailing Thickener performance over the course of months, has led to the improvement of recovered water quality from 500 ppm to 200 ppm, increasing the solid underflow of the thickener from 40% to 48.5%, and similarly, reducing water loss by 60%. Of other important effects, due to improvement of water quality, grade of final concentrate 0.5% increased and because of 73% increase in monthly working hour, concentrate tonnage 55% increased. Finally, sludge thickener optimization has had a significant effect in selecting and designing the dewatering system from the underflow of the sludge thickener."

A fast, non-contact technique for measuring sizes of rock fragments on a conveyor belt is presented. An image processing technique called active stereopsis is used which makes use of a light stripe projected on to the surface of the fragments on the conveyor belt. A CCD TV camera is used to capture the shape of the distorted light stripe. the video image of this shape is then processed by a computer program so that the 3D profile of the surface can be obtained by triangulation. The sizes of the rock fragments are then calculated from this profile. The speed of the technique is improved by calibrating the light stripe system before measurement begins so that the profile of the fragment surface can then be measured using simple geometry. The technique is fast and highly parallel so that it is able to operate in real time.

A property based dynamic model of flotation was built and validated for training purposes. The model is based on the work of the AMIRA P9 project. The recovery of each particle with composition and size is calculated in a given simulation step. The model takes into account machine and operational parameters such as air flowrate and froth height. The model was created using fullscale test data on Pyhlisalmi Cu-Zn-pyrite ore with flotation kinetics of multiphase particles determined. Simulation and validation shows that model can predict the dynamic behavior of the process accurately enough for training purposes.

The Chelopech Copper/Gold Mine, located in west-central Bulgaria, has been in operation since 1953 producing a low-grade copper/gold concentrate containing up to six percent arsenic by weight. The penalties and restrictions imposed on smelting this concentrate, have seen the past operators of the mine strive to find a balance between achieving acceptable metal returns from the smelters and installing novel or unproven technologies in the face of changing political and economic climates. This paper documents the colourful history of the concentrate processing alternatives that have been investigated and implemented over the 45 year life of the Chelopech Mine, culminating in the high pressure oxidation option that is now the focus of a Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) presently being undertaken by GRD Minproc Limited. The fundamental chemistry of the preceding alternatives is outlined followed by a discussion as to why each was ultimately not employed. A detailed description of the technology proposed in the DFS is given including: pressure oxidation, arsenic fixation, SX/EW copper recovery, CIL gold recovery and AVR/SART cyanide/copper recovery processes. "SUMMARY The Istanbul Strait Road Crossing Project includes a 3.34 kilometer subsea tunnel excavated by TBM with an excavation diameter of 13.71 m. The tunnel will incorporate two road decks, each employing two traffic lines and shoulder with the daily capacity of 100,000 light vehicles. The tunnel alignment crosses full face rock sections with heavily fractured zones due to tectonic events as well as a long central stretch of difficult mixed face and very variable soft ground conditions. The demanding ground conditions and the large diameter in combination with realized face pressures well above 10 bar required a highly specialized and well adapted TBM. The paper describes the project challenges and the related technical solutions incorporated within the TBM design as well as the real site experience. INTRODUCTION In 2013, a 13.71 m diameter Mixshield was manufactured in Germany for the Istanbul Strait Road Crossing Project. The delivery of the TBM in late 2013 was a major milestone for the Istanbul Strait Road Crossing Project, also known as the Eurasia Tunnel Project. The Eurasia Project (www.avrasyatuneli.com.tr/en) consists of a 14.6 km route including a 5.4 km tunnel segment in its central part crossing the Bosphorus. The 3.34 km subsea section of the tunnel was excavated in closed mode using a Mixshield TBM. The remaining tunnel length is constructed by sprayed concrete lining (SCL) method followed by a cast in place (CIP) lining or by cut and cover (CC) structures for the TBM transition boxes (Figure 1, right). Other project sections on the European and Asian side consist of upgrading and widening surface access roads towards the tunnel. Conceptual ideas of connecting Asia with Europe via a tunnel crossing the Bosphorus have been around for an extended time and only became realistic towards the end of the 20th century based on significant technical developments in mechanized tunneling. Feasibility studies for a new Bosphorus crossing in 2003 and 2005 confirmed and suggested a road tunnel in its present alignment as the preferred solution. Following an international tender process the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications of Turkey assigned ATAS, a special purpose company formed by Yapi Merkezi (Turkey) and SK E&C (South Korea), to design, build and operate the Eurasia Tunnel Project. The Implementation Contract was signed in February 2011. In 2012, Herrenknecht AG was selected as the supplier for the 13.71 m Mixshield TBM."

"The droplet formation during melting of a 400 mm diameter electrode is simulated with a multiphase-MHD approach. The computational model includes a layer of slag and a layer of liquid steel. A VOF approach is used for the interface tracking and a potential formulation is used for the electric and the magnetic field. The Lorentz force and the Joule heating are recalculated at each time step in function of the phase distribution. The first results provided by this model are presented.IntroductionThe Electro-Slag-Remelting (ESR) process is an advanced technology for the production of components of e.g. high quality steels [ 1-9]. An alternating current (Figure 1) is passed from a conventionally melted and cast solid electrode through a layer of molten slag to the baseplate. Because of the electrical resistivity of the slag, Joule heating is generated and the slag transfers this energy to ingot and mould surfaces and to the melting electrode tip. The molten metal produced in the form of droplets passes through the slag and feeds a liquid pool from where directional solidification takes place. The slag and the ingot are contained in a water cooled copper mould. As also the baseplate is water cooled, a heat flow regime is imposed that gives controlled solidification, and this results in improved structure characteristics of ESR ingots.This process involves two liquids, a liquid metal and a liquid slag. Each liquid is subject to a phase change due to melting and/or solidification. From a fluid dynamic point of view, the ESR process is clearly a multiphase process, with free interfaces (slag/pool, gas/slag), and with a mixed area (slag and falling steel droplets) [ 10-15].Physically, the development of the heat and mass transfer at the slag/droplet interface is important for the final ingot quality, composition and cleanliness. Visual observations of the droplet formation just under the electrode being melted is almost impossible. Due to the presence of high temperatures, opacity of the materials, and the presence of the mould it is not possible to directly observe the behaviour the slag/pool interface. Although usually assumed flat [1-9], a previous work [10] using a Volume of fluid (VOF) model has shown that the interface shape between a layer of slag and steel layer in a cylindrical cavity is highly coupled with the distribution of the electric current. A full scale simulation of the ESR process using a VOF model has shown that the shape of the pool interface is likely to be non flat."

The life cycle assessment method is applied to investigate the environmental impacts of cop-per-slag and copper-ore concentration process. Some environmental load data of copper production are obtained. The result indicates that damage level of human health, ecosystem quality and re-sources respectively is 0.174, 0.0203, 0.246 in the copper-slag concentration and 0.112, 0.0136, 0.299 in the copper-ore concentration. Environmental impact of copper-slag production (0.44) is more than that of copper-ore production (0.42), but can meet the environmental protect demand. With domestic copper concentrate supply gap enlarging, recovering copper from slag will lead to a significant improving of resource utilization and development of circulation economics.

Brief History of Discovery and Early Development In the first half of the nineteenth century, the only authority on the Pacific coast between the Columbia river and Alaska was exercised by the Hudson's Bay Company, who had established a series of forts and trading stations on the coast from the Columbia north to Millbank sound. The Hudson's Bay Company were chiefly interested in the fur industry, and the large influx of settlers from the eastern United States into the territory now known as the States of Oregon and Washington, about 1840, not only interfered with the fur business but involved the question whether the territory should be under the British or the American flag. Anticipating the possibility, later realized, of losing control of this area, the Company, in 1845, established their main fort and trading centre on the southern end of Vancouver island under the name of Fort Camosun; shortly afterwards changing the name to Fort Victoria. Realizing that their former policy of discouraging all attempts to develop any other business than the fur industry had lost them several hundred thousand square miles, the Hudson's Bay Company now set about encouraging settlers in the vicinity of Fort Victoria by disposing of lands to suitable parties and also to those in the employ of the Company. The usual pioneering stage was passed through with the starting of small sawmills, grain mills, etc., and the incidental work accompanying such efforts. Any coal required for blacksmithing or other purposes was brought from England around Cape Horn by the few ships that visited the Pacific Coast. About 1849, an Indian who was having his gun repaired by a blacksmith in Fort Victoria asked about the "black stones" used in the fire and, on being told that the "black stones" had to be brought a great distance, he informed the blacksmith that there was plenty of the same stone where his people lived. This information was immediately given to an official of the Hudson's Bay Company who talked with the Indian and told him that if he would bring some of the "black stones" he would get his gun repaired free and a present of a bottle of rum. Nothing more was heard of this coal until April of the following year, when the Indian came into Fort Victoria with his canoe loaded with coal, which was tested and found to be of good quality. It is reported that the Indian got his bottle of rum.

Electrolytic salt splitting is a technology where acid and/or base is regenerated from a neutral salt using membrane electrolysis. Recent advances in the understanding of brine treatment, membrane stability, and cell design have made electrolytic salt splitting feasible on certain hydrometallurgical solutions. Meanwhile, environmental regulations have made the bulk disposal of salt solutions more difficult. In this paper, sodium sulfate salt splitting is examined from a cost perspective, compared to purchasing the reagents directly. Relative costs are estimated for several regions based on published electricity and reagent prices. Closure cost estimates may be generated at any stage of a mining operationÆs life; commencing with the initial prefeasibility studies and continuing through to the final decommissioning cost estimates. However, not all mine closure cost estimates are necessarily the same. Cost estimates will vary depending on the purpose for which they are prepared, the organisations requiring or undertaking the estimate and the stage of the mining operation. Different organisations can legitimately arrive at disparate cost estimates for closing the same mine because the organisations have different reasons for requiring the estimates. Another, equally valid, reason for potentially wide variations in cost estimates by different organisations on the same mine site is the different definitions of æclosure costsÆ used by different estimators. This paper considers the different approaches by different organisations including operating companies, government authorities and financial organisations and uses a hypothetical example based on practical experience to illustrate some of these differences in estimation methods.The paper suggest that a more consistent approach to closure cost estimating in the Australian mining industry would assist mining companies, governments, the accounting industry and the broader community to better understand this complex component of mine planning. This paper presents the history of uranium procurement and demand, and takes a look at future requirements. The three basic conclusions drawn are: (1) the productive capacity of former and existing producers whose operations may be profitably reactivated is insufficient to meet demand projected beyond 1975; (2) reserves in the $5 -$10 price range do not provide the flexibility to sustain production at the high rates required in the late 1970's; and (3) only higher prices can overcome these deficiencies, as this would provide sufficient inducement for the industry to explore for and develop new reserves and productive capacity.

In an effort to advance the science underlying modern coal pillar stability analysis, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are currently involved in research aimed at better understanding the impact of an in-seam rock parting on the strength of coal pillars. The purpose of this study is to determine a suitable virtual mining height that could be applied using current pillar stability analysis tools. To accomplish this, the boundary element model LaModel was used to back analyze data collected on pillar performance in a room-and-pillar panel at the Maple Eagle Mine located in Southern West Virginia. In a previous work, data collected from borehole pressure cells (BPCs) and extensometers were taken from three instrumentation sites. Data collected from the back bleeders were used to measure the rear abutment stresses, and data collected from two instrumentation sites in the wraparound bleeder were used to measure the front and side abutment stresses as well as the peak strength and performance of the slabbed leave pillar. The utilization of two nearly identical instrumentation sites in the wrap-around bleeder provided much needed repeatability of the obtained measurements. In this study, the data collected from BPCs at the three instrumentation sites was calibrated to match the Bieniawski pillar stress gradient. To model the measured pillar behavior, the LaModel program was selected due to its capability of being directly comparable to the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) and Analysis of Coal Pillar Stability (ACPS) programs. The model was then calibrated to match the measured abutment extent and abutment stress. Finally, the model was validated by reducing the modeled mining height until the yielding of the slabbed leave pillars in the model matched what was measured in the field. The final calibrated mining heights show that a reduction of the shale parting thickness, not including any clay layers, of 52% is applicable. This research study provides the first known measurement of the ARMPS/ACPS “50% Rule” and its applicability to this panel of the Maple Eagle Mine. This finding provides a proof of concept and could have significant implications for future research.

Up to today, it has been very difficult to obtain qualitative and quantitative information about the status and production process of a construction site. It is becoming more and more important to be able to analyze this process so as to notice bottlenecks and interruptions on the site early on. The high costs of each shift in special foundation industry mean that making the wrong decision and/or interruptions can put the financial result at risk. Previously, keeping reliable data meant manual process documentation. This was done either by an additional staff member (incurring high additional costs for training, education, etc.) or by the equipment operators. The latter is critical, because they have to initiate every process step change, leaving no time to log data separately. Studies have shown that there are considerable deviations from the actual process steps. In this paper, a seamless, automated method will be introduced to analyze the construction process. This method recognizes each process step from the equipment data. The main purpose of the data recorded by the piling rig is the need of quality reports and now basis for the presented analysis. Here, a method was successfully transferred from theoretical computer science (compiler construction field) to find application for process recognition. Because the execution of works in special foundation construction can always be defined sequentially and therefore also practiced sequentially, recognition can occur step-by-step. Our method always recognizes the next step, so it does not have to monitor as much data at the same time. Individual trigger points are easier to define. Unlike solutions that are based on a global approach and allocate suitable process steps to data patterns, thereby also creating gaps, the presented method is always seamless. Furthermore, this method can be applied regardless of time or location provided that the necessary machine data is available, which is normally the case with production data logging. This means that construction sites even from the past can also be analyzed and the results used for comparisons. The first results from the analysis of a complete continuous flight augering (CFA piles) installation process of a construction site will be presented.

The Great Artesian Basin (the Basin) is a large aquifer system underlying more than 20 per cent of continental Australia and most of Queensland. The aquifers of the Basin are an important water source for many industries, including the mining sector. The Queensland Great Artesian Basin Water Resource Plan (the Plan) was released in March 2006. The Plan provides a framework for the long- term holistic management of the aquifers in the Queensland Section of the Basin, in a manner that is consistent with the strategic management plan for the Basin as a whole. The paper describes the Basin and summarises trends in the demand for water in the Queensland section of the Basin. It describes the broad framework for management of the Basin by the individual Australian states, as well as the planning entitlement framework for water resource management in Queensland. The paper discusses the content of the Plan. This includes: the division of the aquifers into management areas and management units for management purposes, provision for protection of the flow of water to springs, limits on further allocating water, provision for a competitive process for access to new water and provision for water trading. Under the Queensland planning and entitlement system a resource operations plan is prepared to specify operational arrangements to implement a water resource plan. A resource operation plan for the basin is expected to be finalised before the end of 2006. The paper summarises the likely content of the plan.

The Marquette District of Central Northern Michigan is the oldest of the Lake Superior iron districts with a mining history dating from 1852 up to the present. The total production of all types of ore through 1965 was 338,120, 146 long tons. Emphasis up to the 1950's was on mining the direct shipping ores; however, demands for higher-grade and better-structured ores in the last decade has resulted in a complete shift in emphasis to beneficiating the lowgrade Negaunee Iron-formation to produce high-grade iron ore pellets. The Precambrian sediments of the Marquette Range have been correlated with the Animikie Series of the Thunder Bay District, Ontario, and are contained in a westward plunging synclinorium that is approximately 3 3 miles in length and 3 to 6 miles in width. -The rock unit of major economic importance is the Negaunee Iron-formation that reaches a thickness of 2500 feet near the City of Negaunee. The primary iron content of the Negaunee Iron-formation averages 26 per cent, whereas the altered iron-formation approximates 31 per cent. The Negaunee Iron-formation has been divided into three principal types: diagenetic, oxidized, and metamorphic. The ores produced to date fall into four categories: high-grade soft ores, high-grade hard ores, siliceous ores, and concentrates and agglomerates (pellets). The soft ores generally are found in synclines and in fault-trough structures, bounded by mafic dikes along at least one side, and are mainly found in the basal portion of the Negaunee. In contrast, the hard ores occur in the uppermost portion of the Negaunee and are controlled by structural features such as folds, faults, and dikes. Iron-formation that has undergone diagenetic and metamorphic alteration makes up the main beneficiating ore types. Studies on the Negaunee Iron-formation have played an important role in the formulation of many of the theories on the origin of the Precambrian iron-formations.

"Molybdenum, in the form of molybdenite, is a common byproduct of many copper mining and concentrating operations. Contrary to most copper sulfide minerals where recovery is principally liberation controlled, the recovery of molybdenite is much more complex with fully liberated particles commonly lost to tailings. It is this complexity that facilitated the necessity for a geometallurgical investigation of molybdenite from the Bingham Canyon deposit. The aim of this investigation was to determine the effect mineralogy and/or mineralogical attributes (i.e. morphology, angularity, liberation, size) have on the recovery of molybdenite in the processing circuit. A set of samples was collected from the ores and products produced by Rio Tinto Kennecott’s Copperton Concentrator. All samples were analyzed using normal polarized reflective light, Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA) and X-ray diffractometery (XRD) techniques. The results of this investigation revealed the presence of two distinctly different types of molybdenite, which have been identified as the two polytypes of molybdenite, i.e. hexagonal (2H) and rhombohedral (3R). The 2H polytype occurs as textbook-shaped particles in quartz-molybdenite veins that are located in the core of the Bingham Canyon deposit. The 3R polytype occurs as disseminated, “ball”-shaped particles with a dull or frosted appearance along the margins of the mineralized intrusive body or central core. Concerning their metallurgical behavior each type exhibits unique metallurgical properties that are consistent with those reported in the published literature. For instance, the 2H polytype is easily ground and kinetically “faster” floating with surface attributes that are amenable to higher rates of recovery. This commonly results in the production of a high quality molybdenum concentrate under normal operating conditions common to most copper concentration operations. In contrast, the 3R polytype is difficult to grind and kinetically “slower” floating with surface attributes that less amenable to recovery under normal operating conditions. Therefore, in deposits with higher concentrations of the 3R polytype, modifications to the normal operating parameters may be necessary to improve the recovery of molybdenum. Finally, a preliminary investigation into the metal budget of porphyry Cu and Mo deposits indicates that a positive correlation may exist between the total economic metal budget and the polytype content. For example, higher concentrations of the 3R polytype appear to be more prevalent in Au-enriched porphyries versus Mo-enriched porphyries. This observation may also serve to help explain why it is easier to obtain high rates of recovery in Mo ± W-rich deposits, which contain little to none of the 3R-polytype. Consequently, the potential for the metal budget of a porphyry deposit to be used as an indication of the molybdenite polytype present, as well as its impact on the economics (exploration) and/or on the processing circuit (plant design) could exist. In conclusion, this investigation highlights the necessity of understanding the mineralogical properties or characteristics of molybdenite and/or other economic mineral(s), as these can and will have a direct impact upon the performance and plant optimization."

Diffuse emissions are that directly related to particulate matter suspended from civil structures, materials disposed in conveyor belts carried out by wind, stack e reclaimers operations and that one where dust collectors are not able to act correctly. Vale implemented in the last years a unique system capable to measure this kind of dust, called RAMPs (Dust Monitoring Automatic Network), which creates an analytical net in Tubarao industrial site, located in Vitória, ES. In order to prevent diffuse emissions in Tubarao’s pellets stockyard, it was proposed and developed a predictive model based on operational and climate variables available on the site, using big data and advanced analytics tools. The models developed shows to be adherent to the real emissions rates measured by the RAMPs and proved to be an efficient tool to predict emissions over the internal target with 4 hours of precedence.
