Stability analysis and design of open pit slopes is generally based on an assessment of rock cores and rock exposures on surface or in underground workings. Until recently, core for such assessments has been readily available from exploration drilling programs. In recent years, many exploration programs have reduced the amount of coring and rely more heavily on less expensive rotary or percussion drilling programs where drill cut-tings are sampled for geological evaluation and assay. This paper describes a technique whereby costs of the geotechnical investigation are reduced by using rotary percussion drilling information to assess geotechnical properties of the rock mass. A limited number of core holes are required to establish basic relationships between the mechanical properties of core and the characteristics of the percussion chips. These properties are used as a basis to extrapolate the coring information to encompass the entire area of the rock mass for which percussion drilling information is available.

The coal and metal mines of the United States furnish this country with a large part of the fuel and material necessary to support our industries and thus make possible the welfare and prosperity of our people and even the continuance of our present-day scale of civilization. Mining companies furnish material to industry with one general purpose in mind -- the making of a profit on their work. Efforts are being made successfully and continually to reduce operating costs, to increase production per man, and to perform work as far as possible mechanically and with more efficiency. These efforts are made primarily to reduce costs, to increase production, or to do both - in other words to make more profits or more certain profits. In the endeavor to reduce expense companies are considering more and more the factors which enter into costs of production, among them the factor of accidents and their cost. This paper endeavors to estimate the approximate cost of accidents to the mining industry in order to present the saving possible through accident reduction or elimination.

VERTICAL SHAFTS in the United States have heretofore been sunk by blasting and mucking. The blasting leaves uneven, shattered walls which usually must be supported. Even though the walls will stand, shaft lining is needed to furnish supports for the cage guides, pipes, and power conduits. The lining is generally timber, and as timber can be most easily framed into rectangles, rectangular shaft openings are the rule. The timber reduces the size of the cage floor. For example, if the Idaho Maryland company had put down No. 2 shaft by blasting and mucking, the cage area would have been about thirty per cent of the total shaft area. Besides a low percentage of useful area, an ordinary shaft is subject to fire hazard and to timber maintenance charges. It is also poor for ventilation because the timber ribs cause eddies which greatly reduce the speed of the air currents. A bored shaft does not have these disadvantages. The walls are smooth, circular, and not shattered by blasting, so lining is not required in most

Following a decline in direct and indirect employment in the minerals industry between 2000 and 2003, the situation reversed in 2004 and employment rose by 12 per cent. Furthermore, there are forecasts of continuing employment growth in the minerals industry in the immediate future. For those of us charged with promoting the virtues of a career in the minerals industry this is encouraging news, as it provides us with the evidence to promote the increasing employment opportunities of a healthy and vibrant industry. However, for many others û particularly the employers in this industry û the news is not so rosy. The jobs are there, and in increasing numbers, but the workers arenÆt! Employers right across the industry are finding it increasingly difficult to fill vacancies with suitably qualified and skilled employees and the competition is becoming fiercer. In the minerals and energy sector, questions are being asked and solutions sought on the industryÆs ability to attract and retain a skilled workforce. From many quarters û industry, government and the education sector, calls for urgent action are becoming louder. The reasons for this are well known û the nature of the work, the remote location, perceptions of the industry, an aging workforce, the gender imbalance, the shrinking demographic of school leavers. It is the latter I wish to focus on û the Generation Y demographic û those who have recently left school, those who are in higher education or have recently entered the workforce, or those who are still at secondary school. These young people are the next cohort of potential employees for the industry. But our need for them appears to be greater that their perceived need for us! How do we engage them so they are informed about the industry? How do we inform and advise them so they are prepared to consider further education and training in disciplines and skill areas relating to our industry? How do we guide and motivate them to give it their best shot and work in it û at least for part of their working life? These are fundamental questions that many within the industry have been grappling with for quite some time. Let me share with you some of the strategies that the Minerals Council is implementing to address this issue.

Ocorreu alongamento dos grãos austeníticos para os materiais processados por laminação termomecânica e refino de grão e aumento de limite de escoamento para os aços microligados, tanto na condição de laminação convencional, quanto na condição de laminação termomecânica.

"The Syama Gold Mine, located in southern Mali, was established in 1990 by Broken Hill Propriety Limited (BHP). The operation began treating oxide, and in 1994 it transitioned to processing hard and refractory ore based on ‘whole-of-ore’ roasting. In 1996, BHP was succeeded by Randgold Resources and the operation ran until 2001, when it was placed into care and maintenance.The Syama ore is classified as a double refractory ore with pyrite occluding the fine grained gold present in the ore and high levels of organic carbon presenting a challenge in terms of preg-robbing behaviour. The ore is extremely competent and this combination of metallurgical features was the main source of metallurgical problems encountered by the previous owners.Resolute Mining Limited (RML) acquired the Syama project in 2004. Following a feasibility study and the development of a revised processing flow sheet the plant was recommissioned in 2008 using a combination of old and new equipment. The revised flow sheet enabled primary sulfide ore to be treated by flotation and roasting of the concentrate to produce a calcine suitable for conventional carbon-in-leach (CIL) processing.Commissioning and ramp up of the plant was a troubled process, with monthly gold production being as low as 3000 oz in 2010. Poor availability of equipment and lower-than-forecast recoveries were the primary contributors.During the last five years, RML has utilised a systematic approach to improve production, focusing on mechanical reliability, metallurgical recovery and process bottlenecks. Modifications to the circuit have been as a result of both innovation and the application of technological improvements. Improvements have been made to the flotation, roasting and CIL circuits and RML has introduced a deslime circuit to treat flotation concentrate, in addition to the very successful commissioning of a new 1 Mt/a oxide circuit in December 2014. These changes have resulted in gold production increasing to more than 20 000 oz per month in 2015.This paper presents the processes, change implementation and outcomes of the modifications made to the sulfide circuit to address the availability and recovery problems.Apart from the expansion of an existing, world-class deposit and discovery of new resources, future improvements on the path to a class-leading gold mine include the continued reduction of the unit cash cost, increase in overall sulfide circuit gold recovery, increased throughput through continued innovation and consistency in the plant’s operation.Citation:Sinclair, R, Hunter, I and Landwehr, D, 2016. Published data on thermodynamics of tin in liquid copper, matte and slag have been reviewed, assessed and used in development of thermodynamic solution models of melts. The developed model/database was applied in modelling the Sn deportment in primary copper smelting and e-waste melting processes. The results show that Sn can be removed from the matte through evaporation of various volatile Sn species (with SnS the most volatile) and slagging during copper smelting. The Sn removal increased with increasing matte grade due to the increased gas and slag volume. In the e-waste smelting process, fluxing strategy was developed for smelting e waste to produce a slag with reasonable liquidus and viscosity. Modelling results show that very low amounts of Sn reported to the gas phase due to low S, hence low SnS partial pressure in the system. The black copper produced could contain a few percent of Sn depending on the oxygen potential. The Sn in the black copper could be removed to the slag phase during anode refining. INTRODUCTION Tin is an impurity element commonly found in copper ores, which will be dispersed into various solid, liquid, and gaseous streams during the pyrometallurgical processing of copper. Tin alloy is widely used in electronic soldering due to its low melting point. The growth in treatment of recycled e-waste through primary and secondary copper smelting has led to an increased tin input to the smelting system. Therefore, the deportment of tin between phases is of great interest to the operators of modern smelters. Multi-Phase Equilibrium (MPE) is a thermodynamic package developed by CSIRO for simulating reactions between phases in multi-component and multi-phase systems (Zhang et al., 2002). Over the years the capability of the MPE model has been extended to cover the behavior of a large number of elements in high temperature system (Chen, Zhang, Wright, & Jahanshahi, 2006). In the present paper, the thermodynamic data on tin in liquid copper, matte and slag have been reviewed, assessed and used in the development of a database for Sn slag, alloy and matte phases. The model/database was applied in modelling the tin deportment in primary copper smelting and e-waste smelting processes. The aim of this study is to provide a better understanding of the chemical behaviours of tin in high-temperature copper processing and e-waste smelting.

I AM-glad to have the opportunity at this time to say that I consider it a very great honor to be elected President of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. It fulfills the proudest hopes of my ambition. There is, ,however, one drawback to my personal gratification-a feeling of unworthiness to have my name placed on the list with former Presidents of the Institute, with the brilliant Raymond who guided our society for so many years, with the versatile and lovable James Douglas, my first employer and my friend, a most generous benefactor of our Institute, with the skilful Holley, who gave to the manufacture of steel in this country, its first great impulse, to mention only three of the accomplished men who have preceded me. I assume that the honor of my being elected President of the Institute is not merely a personal one but that it should be considered a tribute to the wonderful progress in the art of mining, both underground and in open pits, and in the beneficiation of native copper and iron ores, which have been shown in the Lake Superior District and also a recognition of our members there and elsewhere who are living at the mines and directing the operations, upon the success of which the whole mineral industry depends.

This report presents prediction equations for eleven factors indicative of metallurgical coal quality which have been developed from data obtainable during exploration. Five coke strength parameters and six carbonization product yields have been predicted for coking coals having volatile matter contents in the range 16.3 to 42.1 percent, dry basis. The prediction models developed contain information from the proximate and ultimate analyses, the size consist, and the petrographic composition of coking coals carbonized in BM-AGA retorts at 800°, 900°, and 1,000°C. The equations reported have been evaluated with independent data derived from the 900°C carbonization of 33 binary blends. Present results show that metallurgical coal quality can be predicted ahead of mining. Capability to forecast coal quality is useful in mine planning and should provide basic information for optimization of blending and crushing techniques, leading to the production of uniform coke.

"Many alternative leaching systems including bacterial leaching have been introduced to avoid passivation on the surface of chalcopyrite and to increase the leaching efficiency of copper from chalcopyrite. Recently, glycine, one of the simplest amino acids, has been emerging as an efficient and environmental-friendly lixiviant to recover copper. In the present study, an alkaline glycine–peroxide lixiviant system was used to leach copper from chalcopyrite concentrate and the leaching mechanisms were also investigated by a suite of kinetic studies under different conditions. The chalcopyrite concentrate contains 28.8% copper with 30.8% sulfide sulfur. The effect of concentration of glycine and hydrogen peroxide of the leaching solution was investigated. Glycine concentration was varied from 0.5 to 1.0 M and the hydrogen peroxide concentration was changed between 3 to 5%. Leaching time and pulp density were also varied. Hydrogen peroxide is an oxidant of the system and the leaching efficiency with periodic additions of the peroxide was also studied. A mineralogical study was performed using XRD and SEM. To investigate the surface of the residue materials, XPS was used to see if any passivating layer was formed during the leaching. Detailed results from mineralogical, chemical, and metallurgical studies will be presented and discussed.INTRODUCTION The greatest global resource of copper is low-grade chalcopyrite and heap bioleaching may be the only economic option for its processing. However, formation of a passivating layer on the surface of chalcopyrite slows down the oxidation reaction and reduces the efficiency of the process."

"The search for technological innovations in the Civil Construction takes as an objective the reduction of costs and increase of the productivity. However, these technologies demand analysis and studies of parameters of control that provide the quality of the products. With the intention of improve the knowledge on industrialized mortars used in mechanized projection machines, a characterization was done in the state anidro, fresh and hardening of three mortars, being each one of a State, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Bahia. The tenors of water/ mortar was obtained through tests done in built environment, it varied from 0,17 to 0,26. From these results, the mortars were projected by his respective consistency, analyzing its compressive strength, and traction adherence resistance, in this way, the good performance of the revetments was provided.IntroductionThe market competitiveness of Construction has led companies to invest in construction processes and techniques in order to rationalize and optimize the buildings. This paper presents gold occurrence investigations on the altered rock gold deposit from Jiaodong area of China, and comparisons of gold occurrence in the ore samples from different mining levels. According to the results, the chemical and mineral compositions of raw materials from different mining levels are quite similar. However, the relative content and grain size of gold minerals are quite different between the two mining levels of -130m~-340m and -550m~-650m. In the ore of upper mining levels of -130m~-340m, electrum is the dominant gold mineral and accounts for about 80% of the total gold minerals, while native gold is minor and accounts for about 20%. As for the ore of deep mining levels of -550m~-650m, the major gold mineral shifts to native gold which accounts for 67%, while the ratio of electrum drops to about 33%. Coarser gold grain size was observed in the upper mining level ore with a mean size of 33.05µm while the gold grain size was much finer in the ore of deep mining levels with a mean size of 22.85µm. Furthermore, the gold mineral associations also show different patterns between the upper mining level samples and the deep mining level samples. Of the three observed gold association types such as inclusion gold, fissure gold and interparticle gold, more inclusion gold was found in the ore of deep mining levels. The inclusion gold accounts for 62% in the ore of deep mining levels, while that in the ore of upper mining levels accounts for about 56%. Further study revealed that the dominant gold associated minerals are pyrite and sulphides and only a small amount of gold is associated with quartz and silicates. It was shown that the altered rock gold ore from Jiaodong area can be regarded as a free milling gold ore, but the processing parameters should be optimized for the ores in different mining levels according to the different gold occurrence. In addition, it was predicted that enhanced gold liberation is necessary for the ore in deep mining levels.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, with the cooperation of the University of Alabama and coal producers, has made a series of washability studies to obtain technically and commercially important data regarding the productive coal beds of the State. Based on the system followed in these studies, this report consists principally of screen-sizing and float-and-sink data on the Clark and Gholson beds at Boothton, Ala. A previous washability study 4/ has been made on the Clark bed at Marvel, Ala.SAMPLING AT MINESThe coal from the Gholson and the Clark beds was sampled at the tipple which receives the output,the Boothten No. 3 and No. 4 mines. These two mines are on the Gholson and Clark beds, respectively, but the coal. from both mines is mixed on the tipple and washed in the same washery. The samples taken were minus 4-inch raw coal. The plus 4-inch raw coal is hand¬picked and not washed. AS the 4-inch screen had a capacity in excess of the output of the mines, it was stopped at the end of each mine-car trip. By Observing from which mine incline each trip was hoisted, a separate sample from each bed was cut from the discharge stream of an endless belt which conveys the through 4-inch raw coal to the bin ahead of the washer. The output from each bed was sampled uniformly over the period of a working shift. The two washability samples weighed approximately 3,000 pounds each."

The CSA Mine is located in Cobar, New South Wales and is operated by Glencore. Large scale underground production started from 1965, with zinc, lead, silver and copper extracted in the past. The current operations focus on copper, with a silver co-product.From 2014 to 2016, Cobar Management Pty Ltd (CMPL) undertook a major capital project to upgrade the primary ventilation system at the CSA Mine. This involved the development of ten raises using full-face raise boring from surface to a depth of 1450 m. The total length of the raises was approximately 2500 m. Geotechnical conditions were identified as a key project risk during the early planning stages of the project. Timely quantification of the geotechnical risks was required to minimise project delays and cost overruns. Geotechnical investigations were planned and conducted for each raise prior to pilot drilling and full-face back reaming.Nine of the ten raises had final wall camera and laser baseline surveys completed following full-face reaming. The surveys were conducted progressively, allowing ongoing back analysis and calibration of geotechnical evaluations as the project advanced.This paper presents the design and planning process of the raise bored excavations. It details the geotechnical investigation work undertaken to mitigate the geotechnical risks and the challenges and learnings from the project including the benefits of close collaboration between the parties involved.CITATION:Sidea, D and Brettell, T M, 2017. INTRODUCTION. THE term matte is applied to smelting-products so extremely diverse in composition and physical properties that it appears impossible to devise any generic formula to represent, chemically, the manner in which the varied proportions of the almost unlimited possible constituents combine with each other. Mattes produced in copper-smelting, in distinction from those produced in smelting-operations in which the recovery of copper is secondary to that of other metals, cover a narrower range in composition. The copper-content of such mattes vary from 20 to 80 per cent., and even this range is much smaller in general practice since it is found advantageous, when possible, to produce mattes with about. 50 per cent. of copper in the first operation. Further, it is unusual that arsenic or antimony occurs in copper-ores in sufficient proportions to form arsenides or antimonides in such quantities that they will separate out from the furnace-products, as is common in lead-smelting. Generally, the mattes produced in copper-smelting are composed mainly of copper (usually greater than 35 per cent.), iron and sulphur, the remaining elements being usually in proportions sufficiently small to allow of their treatment as impurities, rather than as essential constituents of the mattes. In modern practice of smelting copper-ores in blast-furnaces the tendency is to approach pyritic smelting as nearly as pos¬sible, the furnaces being low and the air supplied being largely in excess of that required for complete combustion of the carbonaceous fuel. Hence the atmosphere of the blast-furnace thus used is usually oxidizing or Dearly neutral? and, as a consequence, the reduction of metallic iron that was a necessary evil of former practice is of unusual occurrence in operations where the main object is the recovery of copper. Gallium (Ga) and Germanium (Ge) are essential strategic elements that are extensively used as semiconductors in many technological fields. Owing to their essential uses and supply disruption, Ga and Ge are deemed critical by the U.S. They are typically found as substitutions or inclusions in zinc minerals. However, their distributions within zinc minerals are not well understood. To address this, trace element and mineralogy analyses of representative samples obtained from an old high-zinc-grade tailing were performed using various qualitative and quantitative techniques. These techniques included Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), Tescan Integrated Mineralogical Analysis (TIMA) with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Moreover, bench-scale froth flotation tests were conducted to enrich zinc minerals, the major hosts of Ga and Ge, using PAX as a collector, Na2S as a sulfidizer, Pb(NO3)2 as an activator, and MIBC as a frother. Comprehensive characterization analyses of the flotation products showed significant enrichment of Zn, Ga and Ge in the flotation concentrates.

"IntroductionON THE LAST DAY of December, 1951, a half-century of steel production was completed in the open hearth department of Dominion Iron & Steel, Limited, in Sydney, Nova Scotia.During that period, almost every known variation of basic steel making practice was used in working out a steel making process which would overcome the difficult metallurgical problems imposed by the use of Cape Breton coal and Wabana ore.This paper is presented as a brief review of these steel making practices, setting forth the fundamental metallurgical factors involved in their success or failure.Establishing the IndustryThe story of steel production at Sydney is closely interwoven with that of coal. The steel industry owes its inception to a desire on the part of the Dominion Coal Company, which was incorporated in 1893, to improve its marketing position by increasing sales of slack coal and providing a year-round demand for its product. Accordingly, the Dominion Iron and Steel Company, Limited, was incorporated on March 30th, 1899, with Mr. H. M. Whitney -who was President of the Dominion Coal Company -as its first President. The new Company was given powers to manufacture and process iron and steel, and to mine all minerals, including coal.A strong inducement to the industry was the bounty offered by the Dominion Government for the production of both iron and steel."

Organizational development that attempts to simultaneously deal both with training and with job design parameters as they relate to mine health and safety, productivity, and quality of life is one of several areas of research that the Bureau of Mines is pursuing. The Bureau sees potential in this particular effort for reducing accidents and injuries, improving worker satisfaction and health, and increasing productivity.

In the presented study test work was performed with near-infrared hyperspectral imagery (NIR-HI) on 36 ore samples from a South-American epithermal Au-Ag mine. The aim of the test work was to investigate if NIR-HI provides information about the alteration mineralogy of samples that can be used to predict their economic value. Mineral distribution maps were produced from the hyperspectral images by using correlation coefficients between the image pixels and a set of reference spectra. These maps showed that detection of mineralogy with NIR-HI can be used to distinguish; i) ore particles with low Au and Ag grades, ii) ore particles with high carbon contents, iii) ore particles with high sulphur contents.
