Top-down construction (or cut and cover construction) is providing important advantages when comparing with conventional construction techniques for commercial developments with deep basements, underground car parks or near surface infrastructure and traffic tunnels. Main features are substantially reduced restrictions to surface usage, avoidance of intervention with adjacent property, provision of rigid substructures resulting in minimal deforma­tions and settlements and, last but not least, accelerated construction pro­gramme. The present contribution illustrates the construction method in general and elaborates in detail on the special foundation works for a major urban commercial high rise development requiring a six level basement structure.

The utilisation of low-grade raw materials such as fine iron ore and semi-soft coking coal, and reduction of CO2 emissions are important issues in the ironmaking process. To solve these issues, a new process called PosPRA (POSCO prereduced agglomeration process) has been developing at POSCO. It focuses on the reduction of carbon composite iron ore briquette in travelling grate. In this study, the possibility of manufacturing the prereduced agglomerate (PRA) under oxidising atmosphere with travelling grate and the optimum manufacturing conditions of carbon composite iron ore briquette are investigated. The results have shown that controlling the temperature and oxygen potential in the range from 1100 to 1200°C and below 10 vol per cent respectively is very important to increase the reduction efficiency of briquette in travelling grate. High quality properties of the green briquette and PRA could be manufactured by using the briquette mixed with 20 wt per cent of coal under 0.1 mm in size under compacting pressure in the range from 3 to 7 t/cm. Adding 1 wt per cent water as a binder is proper under the condition of high compacting pressure. In a pot grate test, the compressive strength and metallisation degree of PRA are achieved over 150 kgf/p and about 55 per cent respectively, at bed temperature 1150°C and oxygen potential of 10 vol per cent when 20 wt per cent of coal is mixed in the briquette.CITATION:Wang, M K, Son, S H, Park, J I, Jeong, H K and Cho, B K, 2017. In order to predict the composition of inclusions and to ascertain a method to prevent inclusions from forming in liquid Fe-16 mass Cr alloy, a thermodynamic database was developed through a quantitative determination of thermodynamic relationships of Cr-Al-Si-Mn systems in the liquid Fe alloys. Applications of the databases to the prediction of Mn/Si complex deoxidation with Alin Fe-16 mass Cr alloy were demonstrated in succession. The electromagnetic levitation technique using a cold crucible was employed to separate inclusions from liquid metallic alloys completely and to prevent any contamination from surroundings. Various interaction parameters in the liquid Fe-16 mass per cent Cr alloy system were determined; these are: [eAl(Fe)Cr= 0.19/T, rAl(Fe)O,Cr= -0.01, rAl(Fe)O,Cr= -0.00013, eS1Cr(Fe)= -0.38/T,rSi(Fe)O,Cr= 0.007, rO(Fe)Si,Cr= 0.0044, rA1(Fe)Si,Cr= -0.0075, rSi(Fe)A1,Cr= -0.0078, rSi(Fe)Mn,Cr= 0.005, and rMn(Fe)Si,Cr=0.01.] An improved database, utilizing interaction parameters for molten metal determined in this study, and the Fact Sage slag database of the MnO-SiO2-Al2O3-CrOx-MgO system were used for thermodynamic calculations. These were carried out under various thermodynamic conditions, and results were compared with experimental data of Si/Al, Mn/Si, and Mn/Si/Al deoxidation equilibria. With the abovementioned results, together with experimentally obtained data, thermodynamic conditions were determined, in particular Mn and Si contents, under which liquid inclusions form in liquid Fe-16 mass per cent Cr alloy. The critical Al content in liquid Fe-16 per cent Cr alloy, above which solid inclusion of corundum phase ((Al,Cr)2O3) formed, was as low as 10 ppm. This indicates that extreme care must be taken in controlling the Al content in the metal to avoid formation of solid corundum phase ((Al,Cr)2O3) inclusion. The compositional change prediction of inclusions, which originate from slag entrapment and by Ca addition, was demonstrated by use of the alloy database optimized through this study, and the Fact Sage oxide database. For Si-deoxidized Fe-16 per cent Cr alloy, high Si and low basicity of slag are effective to obtain liquid inclusions. For Al-deoxidized Fe-16 per cent Cr alloy, it is important to keep the Si content lower than 0.1 per cent and it is required to add Ca. "Ground vibration is the natural result of the blasting process. Many empirical formulae and methodologies including analysis of travel path effects have been developed. The scaled distance, which is the most popular approach for the calculation of the attenuation of particle velocity in the ground, has led to significant advances in the prediction of particle velocity when both explosive charge and distance vary. However, this approach does not consider the effect of ground anisotropy and existence of structural geological features on ground vibration. Therefore, in this study, the effects of these rock mass properties on types, amplitudes, and frequencies of ground vibration waves at four surface mines are examined. The results, which were implemented at Kangal coal mine, Bastas quarry and Kíbrís quarry, provided guidance for the extensive study at Orhaneli surface coal mine.As a result of the study, the authors came to the conclusion that vibration amplitudes change depending on the ground on which sensors were deployed and the conditions depending on whether measurements were done near major structural geological features. It was determined that the vibration amplitudes, measured at equal distances from the source but in different directions, change because of the propagation velocity anisotropy. Besides the change of wave type due to the kind of ground at the measurement location, it was determined that vibration anomolies were due to structural features."

Paper presented at the 28th International Geological Congress held in Washington DC, July 1989 (International geochemical mapping sessions). The results suggest that meaningful geochemical maps can be produced from very low-density surveys, and that existing data sets could perhaps be incorporated into such a map series with the use of a system such as Uniras software. There are still many problems to be resolved, however, including the compatibility of data derived from different analytical methods, and the precise methods to be employed will necessarily require international agreement. Sampling densities should be chosen on the basis of the scale of the geochemical and geological features to be distinguished and will vary from region to region. Reanalysis of selected samples from archives to increase the range of elements determined or to unify analytical methods is only likely to be effective if the original survey was at quite a low density

A SURVEY and critical appraisal of published information about Young's modulus was originally made by the writer because of a complete lack of information about this very important quantity in works on mechanics, physical metallurgy, physics, and other sciences. It was felt that a comprehensive summary of such information about Young's modulus might be of general interest and may suggest new problems or lines of attack on other problems that involve E. Hence this paper has been prepared even though it is only a review, with no new ideas or experimental data. The references are only those used in assembling the paper. No attempt was made to compile a complete bibliography on the subject of Young's modulus. CALCULATION OF YOUNG'S MODULUS FROM THEORETICAL OR EMPIRICAL CONSIDERATIONS Many attempts have been made to compute E from theoretical considerations. The earliest calculations were probably those of Tomlenson (1883) and Southerland (1891), but Fessenden 41,42 made extensive calculations a few years later and arrived at the relationship: [2E = 78. 101 (_L V] where V is the atomic volume. In 1923, Peczalski,43 working from the same stand-point but with more information available on atomic structure, arrived at an identical relationship, which he expressed as: [E=B(m) 2] where B is a constant of value about 8 • 10 7, p is density and m is atomic weight; the atomic volume, of course, being m/p. Portevin44 immediately pointed out that while the equations of Fessenden and Peczalski were true of the common metals, they gave low values for the refractory metals with high moduli (Fig. I). He showed (Fig. 2) that much better concordance was obtained by means of an empirical equation of the form: [E _ KT'Vb] where K is a constant; T the absolute melting point; V, atomic volume, and a and b constants of value approximately I and 2 respectively. This constant K in the Portevin equation is not necessarily the same for all elements, as shown by Thompson.45 Other equations for E based upon theoretical considerations have been derived by Honda and Yamada49 and Lasareff. 50 The most recent calculations of elastic moduli based upon quantum mechanics are probably those of Fuchs.46-48 He extended the method of Wigner and Seitz for calculating the lattice energy and compressibility of monovalent metals and computed the elastic constants of lithium,

A large number of brittleness concepts have been used in very different studies in the literature. One of them is the B1brittleness concept. In this study, the objective is to criticize the B1 brittleness concept on rotary blast hole drills. The B1 brittleness concept, the ratio of uniaxial compressive strength (sc) to tensile strength (sT), are widely used as a rock brittleness concept in the literature (Inyangand Pitt, 1990; Verhoef, P.N.W. 1993; Neil, D.M. et al.1994;Becker, et al.1984; Evans and Pomeroy, 1966; Göktan, R.M.1992; Kahraman, S. 2001; Yamaguchi, U. 1970; Verhoef, P.N.W. et al.1996; Bilgin, 1982; Howarth and Rowlands,1987; Howarth, D.F. et al. 1986). So, it was used as a rock brittleness concept in this article. The value of the B1brittleness concept is equal to the tangent of ß angle in the following graph. It was seen that more meaningful relationships could be obtained with the B2 brittleness, the under ?Area?(= 1/2(scxsT) = B2) under the curve, instead of tangent ß, (=B1), of the curve.

Artisanal mining is a rudimentary activity that today attracts over 30 million people in virtually all developing countries around the world. As the price of gold has steadily increased over the past decade, 15 million people have become involved in extracting this metal in 55 countries. Individuals have switched to mining from primary industrial sectors such as agriculture to increase their income. These workers generally have little capital, low education levels, and no previous experience in mining. Together with a lack of technical support from governments, these factors lead to disorganized and informal mining activities that generate environmental and social chaos. The absence of technical knowledge and capital has caused a proliferation of Gold Ore Processing Centres (GOPCs) around the world established by local entrepreneurs, who provide a way for miners to process their ores using amalgamation for a fee that is relatively low to non-existent. Gold recovery by the independent miners rarely exceeds 30 % and gold-rich tailings are left at GOPC facilities as a form of payment. GOPCs recover around 90 % of the remaining gold using cyanidation, flotation, and amalgamation, without any compensation paid to the miners. In processing these mercury (Hg)-contaminated tailings, Hg cyanide complexes are produced that are dumped into aquatic environments, leading to rapid bioaccumulation of Hg by fish. In the town of Portovelo, Ecuador, the establishment of partnerships between GOPC entrepreneurs and artisanal miners has proven to be successful in forming legal small-mining companies to create more equity and reduce pollution. About 108 GOPCs operate in Portovelo-Zaruma, with 40 % of these still working illegally without proper regulation and permitting. Over 20 % of these GOPCs continue to use grinding, concentrating and amalgamating of the gold, with 58 % performing cyanidation of tailings and/or gravity concentrates, and 15 % combining flotation with cyanidation. About 94 % of the GOPCs concentrate the ore prior to applying amalgamation, which significantly reduces Hg emissions to the environment. Incorporating flotation has given the operators increased skills in mineral recovery, with the side benefit of producing a copper concentrate as added value. Despite these innovations, mineral recovery is still inefficient, and waste management is a major challenge in creating true sustainability in this sector (technical efficiency together with social and environmental responsibilities). Further organization, training and capacity-building are needed. The principles of Lean Manufacturing Methods ("Just in Time" production and "Automation") are suggested as possible techniques to assist small GOPCs to become sustainable. In this concept, a larger mining company can become associated with artisanal miners in a partnership to provide training and investment for exploitation of small deposits that would be infeasible as a single large operation. As well, an International Training Centre for Artisanal Miners (ITCAM) is being established in Portovelo with collaboration of the Government of Ecuador to further enhance and upgrade mining activities in this region. ITCAM will provide artisanal miners with technical, business and environmental training to become responsible small-scale miners. In building this new capacity, ITCAM intends to create an atmosphere of trust to attract private and corporate investors to become partners with artisanal miners.

Surface properties of metal sulphides have a great significance in various areas of engineering and science, such as acid mine drainage, contaminant sorption, and metal separation. In various attempts at producing metal sulphide particles from synthetic solutions, prodigious quantities of nuclei that grow only to colloidal dimensions have been frequently reported. This copious nucleation is promoted by the high levels of supersaturation that characterize most precipitation reactions. Colloidal particle formation in precipi¬tation-based separation processes results in sub-optimal solid-liquid separation, which is alleviated by the production of more highly crystalline particles or agglomerates. The current work approaches this challenge from an electrochemistry perspective, by measuring surface charge potential of precipitant particles during metal sulphide precipitation with respect to the concentration of metal sulphide lattice ions in solution. Electrophoresis was used to measure the metal sulphide particle zeta potential and the settling properties were obtained by performing settleability measurements using an Imhoff settling cone. A suspension of copper sulphide particles was precipitated from synthetic solutions of copper and sulphide ions at equimolar concentrations. Immediately after precipitation the copper sulphide particles had a zeta potential of -50 mV and a settleability of about 7 ml.l-1. With the addition of copper ions the settleability increased by a factor of nearly three times and the zeta potential also increased to a maximum of -40 mV. A decrease in zeta potential to a minimum of -60 mV was observed after the addition of sulphide ions and this was associated with a settleability of 0 ml.l-1.

This paper deals chiefly with the preliminary examination, when a decision has to be made as to whether a prospect has a chance of developing into a mine or not. At this stage it is important to have a fairly clear conception of what is expected of the prospect, andjust what type of mine is sought. Much money can be wasted testing a prospect suitable for a prospector or small syndicate, but which never looked like becoming a mine of sufficient size to interest a company. When undertaking an inspection, therefore, it is necessary to have a broad outline, at least, of the policy of the principals for whom the report is intended.At this early stage it is frequently necessary to form an opinion of the prospects of a property on very meagre data. When new to this type of work one's first reaction is often th~t it is impossible to pass an opinion on the data available. It. is absolutely necessary,however, that an opinion of the possibilities and chances of favourable development be given; The report should strive to convey this information, making quite ::lear the risk involved, how complete are the data on which this opinion is based, and the possible magnitude of the prize. A Preliminary report has to state whether a property has sufficient prospects to warrant testing.The following procedure is suggested in order to make best use of the data and minimise hasty conclusions influenced by preconceived ideas-an ever-present danger.Examination.The first stage is the examination. This should aim at collecting all available significant data, but avoid clouding the issue with detail which, at this stage, will not affect the decision. The following points are considered to be the main ones for which to look:-Geological Environment.As good a working knowledge as possible'of the geology of the area should be obtained. Government Geological Survey reports and maps, if available, will be a big help. A detailed knowledge of the regional geology is not necessary a,t this stage, but a broad outline of the geological setting of the prospect under review, and also of any other important mines in the district, is often helpful in the final decision.The Nature of the Ore-Body.Any facts concerning the nature or occurrence of the lode should be noted as, coupled with experience of similar bodies, they affect the ultimate decision.Structural Control.This is probably the most important factor, in the light of present geological knowledge. Its chief importance is due to two facts:-(a) Structure plays one of the prime parts in ore deposition.(b) Geological knowledge, of structure is somewhat in advance of knowledge of other factors influencing ore deposition.

Some of the more recent developments in Paint Technology are solvent free materials. These coatings have mainly been formulated to overcome the negative attributes of solvent-based coatings, i.e. environmental, safety and health risks, potential for solvent entrapment and osmotic blistering, as well as the formation of micro-pores during the curing process. Two solvent free liquid epoxy coatings have been used extensively on power generation plant. However, very little is known regarding their long-term performance under different exposure conditions, as well as whether these coatings actually perform better than their solvent-borne counterparts. In addition, solvent free materials are generally used where outage periods are restricted and coatings need to be applied within a very short period. Though these materials have reportedly much shorter curing times than other conventional solvent-borne coatings, little is known regarding their limits with respect to maximum film thicknesses and being put into service while still being wet/partially uncured. The latter has become common practice at many power stations in the past two years or so. In addition, the application and curing methods of solvent free materials are different to that of solvent-borne materials, and may require equipment and application process changes. This paper covers the application and performance properties of solvent free coatings in comparison to solvent-borne materials primarily intended for immersion service. Numerous coatings were evaluated under immersed static and cyclic hydrostatic pressures. Other tests included short curing / early immersion tests, dry-to-touch and dry-through curing times, adhesion tests, surface tolerance tests, etc. The results show that the solvent free materials have clear benefits with respect to safety, health, environmental and long-term performance, but will be more difficult to apply compared to solvent-borne materials.

Fully-grouted roof bolts comprise more than 80% of the primary roof supports used in U.S. coal mines. However, nearly 1,500 MSHA reportable, non-injury roof falls occur each year, and most of these are attributable to failure of the roof bolt system. Anchorage failure is one failure mechanism for fully-grouted bolts. As roof deformation works its way upward, the bolts can become heavily loaded near their upper ends. If the applied load exceeds the anchorage, the bolts will simply pull out. Research dating back 30 yrs indicates that this type of anchorage failure is most likely when the roof rock is weak, just where roof support is most critical. In soft shale or coal roof, the small amount of data available in the literature indicates that 20-30 in of resin anchorage may be required to achieve the full capacity of the bolt. In other words, the “full resistance zone” of a 60 in bolt may actually be just 30-40 in. Despite its potential importance, there is no widely accepted anchorage test for fully grouted bolts. Standard pull tests have sometimes been employed, but they provide no information on the anchorage near the top of the bolt. An alternative, first described more than 25 yrs ago in the U.S., is the short-encapsulation pull test (SEPT). With this test, the bolt is installed with only a short (1 ft or less) tube of resin. In recent years variations of this test have become international standards. v

People are migrating because of economic, social, natural and political reasons. These natural and humane factors effects the distribution of populations. The need for tunnels has grown in order to provide a comfortable life and reduce losses such as waste of time, labor, energy, efficiency and so on. It is inevitable to carry out excavations in rock tunnels (shears, platforms, lines, connections, wastewater, distribution, energy, transportation etc.), that will be built by excavating with conventional method, by controlled blasting regarding with constrains. In this study of applied explosives engineering the blasting applications are evaluated, which were carried out for research and development purposes at Yenisahra Station tunnels in Kartal Formation which was built with the aim of solving İstanbul's transportation problem within the framework of the Kadıköy-Kartal Metro Project. Twenty-four shots were made by using explosives in 60 blastholes that were drilled in the tunnel faces, which were located between and outside of two different faults. Six microphones were used to measure the air shock and eight geophones were used to measure the parameter values of the vibrations (particle velocity, frequency, displacement, acceleration, amplitude, wavelength etc.), which were placed at predetermined points of the surface, occurred during the blasting applications. Data from the geophone and microphones were recorded on six seismographs. The coordinates and the distances between the shot points and the measurement stations are determined by an electronic theodolite. The total number of seismic records, recorded in seismographs, is 118. The number of records of vibrations that crossed the faults is 42 and the number of records of vibrations that did not cross the fault is 76. The particle velocity, frequency, amplitude, acceleration, displacement and wavelength were measured in transverse, longitudinal and vertical directions. The total number of measurements is 354. By evaluating all seismic records, the effect of delay intervals, faults and scaled distances on the particle velocity, frequency, amplitude, displacement, acceleration, wavelength and air shock were investigated. When the vibrations formed during the Research & Development (R&D) blasts were examined, it was determined that the parameter values of vibrations that crossed the faults are lower than the ones that did not cross the faults. In addition, when the particle velocity values of all vibrations are examined according to the present circumstances, it is determined that the waves did not cross the fault in all delay intervals are superposed in all directions, and that the least superposing occurred in the 50 ms delay range.

When selecting a solution for improving resiliency at facilities, such as airports, utility and transit sites, there are many options to protect structures and equipment against potential flooding. Each case involves an evaluation of the several key factors such as: design flood parameters, the geography and geological conditions below the site, the facility, and the layout of buildings and equipment to be protected. Upon reviewing these conditions and conducting a cost analysis of various options, the most suitable approach to protecting a facility can be determined. This paper will compare the conditions at various New York City sites, and give detail to the solutions utilized at these sites to improve resiliency and protect each facility. Flood wall types varied as did the strategies for raising critical equipment, to meet the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) 7 guidelines. Due to granular soil conditions, some sites may experience soil seepage below the flood wall resulting in the need for underground cut off systems. The authors will also present detail regarding the solutions used to control seepage. Various cut off systems will be discussed such as grouting and sheeting, explaining the factors that may impact the choice of systems. Another consideration in flood resiliency is the potential for a buoyancy condition on basement slabs when localized flood barriers are employed on first floor doors and windows. The authors will discuss the potential impacts of this condition on facilities and methods to mitigate this issue. 1. INTRODUCTION New York City is an urban coastal Metropolis with varied geology and low land areas. This includes but is not limited to sandy soils at Coney Island and the John F. Kennedy Airport. Soft marshes are found near Flushing Queens and LaGuardia Airport. Heavy rains and coastal storms caused disruption to daily life and heavily affected the economy of this vibrant City. For instance, in lower Manhattan business was interrupted in the Financial District. Power outage was widespread; commuter trains and subways were stopped and put out of service. Additionally, numerous residential homes were damaged in Coastal Neighborhoods such as the Far Rockaways and Staten Island. 1.1. Superstorm Sandy Flood Statistics On October 29, 2012 Superstorm Sandy impacted numerous facilities in the New York City Metro area. The resulting damage cost New York City more than $42 billion in repair costs. $33 billion was allocated to repair housing and infrastructure, and $9 billion was allocated to protect transit systems1. One of the major issues that impacted the city in terms of its preparedness was the high flood surge. The surge surpassed the former base flood elevation and reached as high as 13.88 feet (above mean lower low water - MLLW) in Battery Park at 9:24pm that evening. Tottenville, Staten Island experienced more damage where the water was recorded at +16 (North America Vertical Datum of 1988 - NAVD88), which is equivalent to 18.7 feet above MLLW (see Fig. 1). Not only was the surge at record levels, the waves in New York Harbor were also at record level where some buoy stations recorded waves of up to 32.5 feet. The City released “A Stronger, More Resilient New York” in June 2013, a plan laid out to rebuild communities impacted by Sandy and improve the resiliency of the infrastructure and buildings in New York City. Figures below help to illustrate the extent of the inundation relative to the projects being discussed.

Using iron- and sulfur-oxidising bacteria to catalyse the breakdown of sulfides that host the gold is an important biological method for the pretreatment of refractory gold ores. Following this biological treatment a combination of chemical and physical methods are used for leaching (such as the cyanide process) and concentration (such as carbon-in-pulp or electrowinning) of gold. Although these methods are well accepted by industry, they harbour limitations in the processing of low-grade refractory ores, and regulatory agency/public acceptance of cyanide use. Thus, it is beneficial to industry to develop environmentally friendly, cost-efficient leaching and concentration techniques that are based on micro-organisms. This may soon be possible by adapting the results of recent regolith geoscience research, which has shown that micro- organisms are capable of driving a biogeochemical cycle of gold dispersion, transport and reconcentration in the supergene environment. The indigenous microbiota in biologically active soil microcosms from a number of Australian sites are capable of solubilising up to 80 wt per cent of the gold contained in these materials during 50 days of incubation. Studies using molecular microbial techniques have shown that a metallophilic bacterium, Ralstonia metallidurans, is present in biofilms on gold grains from a number of Australian sites. R metallidurans is capable of actively accumulating gold from solution, suggesting that the bacterium may contribute to the formation of secondary gold grains and nuggets. Identifying the biochemical and physiological pathways that lead to the dispersion and accumulation of gold in regolith, and quantifying the reaction kinetics of these processes may thus lead to the development of industrial bio-processing capacities for gold-containing ores.

This theory can be applied for analyzing grinding media consumption rates in any given grinding operation as well as the evaluation of alternative grinding media products, based on actual operational data, correcting for conditions like ore hardness, feed and product sizes, mill power and circuit throughput; all of them unrelated to the grinding media intrinsic quality attributes. A series of Moly-Cop Tools 3.0 applications have been developed to facilitate the calculations involved. Moly-Cop Tools 3.0 is available, free of charge, to all interested parties through the corresponding author.INTRODUCTION Mineral grinding circuit operators recognize the significance of grinding media (balls) consumption on the cost structure of any full scale grinding facility. The effective cost associated with this essential consumable depends on two factors: delivered price and durability (quality) of the grinding media. When evaluating alternative grinding media varieties, there is a well accepted evaluation criterion by which a given media type is considered to be “cost-effective” when its unit application cost – normally expressed in $/ton of ore ground – is shown to be lower than that of a nominal reference condition: Grinding Media Cost = Ball Price x Ball Consumption (1) ($ /ton ground) ($/ton balls) (ton balls/ton ground) Under this criterion, an alternative, higher-price grinding media product could be “cost-effective” if its associated consumption rate is sufficiently lower than the reference media, enough to yield a lower grinding cost, as dictated by Equation 1. For the proper application of the above criterion, evaluators must rely on representative indicators of grinding media quality, ideally independent of most mill operating conditions. In each particular case, ball price is always a known component; however, it is not so evident how media performance (quality) differences amongst alternative product types could be assessed with a reasonable degree of accuracy and precision."

"INTRODUCTION By far the greater part of the high-grade manganese ore used in the United States is imported from overseas. During the early part of the recent World War importations of manganese ore were seriously threated, and it appeared that it would be necessary to utilize low-grade domestic ores to the fullest possible extent. Among the processes that appeared to offer the best possibilities for beneficating low-grade domestic oxide manganese ores, which ordinarily are net readily amenable concentration by ore-dressing methods, were those involving leaching with sulfur dioxide. The Bureau of Mines therefore investigated the amenability of a large number of such ores to sulfur dioxide leaching.Several sulfur dioxide processes for beneficiating low-grade oxide manganese ores have been proposed. 3/ One of these, based on a patent by Van Arsdale and Maier, 4/ was used recently in a plant constructed to treat 1,000 tons per day of 20-percent manganese ore from the Three Kids deposit near Las Vegas, Nev. 5/ In this process the ore slurry is leached with sulfur dioxide gas, the resulting solution is evaporated to crystallize the manganese sulfate, the crystals are decomposed thermally to produce high-grade manganese oxide and regenerate sulfur dioxide, and the manganese oxide product is nodulized. The Bureau of Mines has recently developed a process 6/ in which a suspension of the ore in calcium dithionate solution is leached with dilute S02 gas, the manganese is recovered from the resulting solution by a simple lime precipitation, and the precipitate is nodulized or sintered to form a high-grade manga¬nese oxide product."

The United States not only is the largest producer of phosphate rock but also manufactures and consumes greater quantities of phosphate products than any other country. New and expanding uses will increase even further the demand for this basic raw material. Only a small proportion of the total quantity of phosphate rock mined and marketed is consumed directly in a raw or unprocessed state; the vast bulk is chemically treated and converted into [ertilizer] and a wide variety of finished products that play a vital role in [r] national economy. Three fundamental methods are employed in decomposing phosphate rock. 1. Reduction by carbon at high temperatures. 2. Treatment with one or more acids. 3. Calcination or fusion with silica, sodium salts, magnesium minerals, or small quantities of phosphoric acid.

This paper is one of a series dealing with special mining problems and forming part of a general study of mining, methods and costs being conducted under direction of the Bureau of Mines. A considerable part of the material assembled and discussed in this paper has been gathered from articles on individual mines written by consulting engineers to the bureau who are engaged in active mine operation at the properties described, while other data have been taken from the technical press or gathered from personal observations. OBJECT AND SCOPE OF PAPER C. F. Jackson4 ha[-] pointed out that underground transportation (tramming, haulage, and hoisting) absorbs an appreciable percentage of the total underground cost of most mines, averaging for different methods of mining 12.9 to 28.4 per cent of the total underground cost. In general the percentage of cost accounted for by transportation was shown to be highest for the low-cost mining methods.
