To design and operate a successful mine the technical specialists must agree on what is ore, what is not ore, and how quickly the orebody is to be mined and processed. These seemingly simple questions defy easy analysis and can push mining engineers, geologists, metallurgists and others to the limit of their capabilities. The questions are rarely addressed adequately in feasibility studies or in operational planning. To optimise the mine and processing plant requires proper determination of cut-off grades or values, prediction of feed variability on an hourly, daily or longer basis, right-sizing the mining rate for optimum product quality, understanding the cost of capital and the expectations of investors, and many other considerations that involve geology, geotechnical engineering, mining, metallurgy, environmental effects and economics. This paper addresses the key matters that should be considered as inputs to the practical issues of metallurgical plant design and operation.CITATION:McCarthy, P L, 2015. The 500-kt/a (550,000-stpy) refinery in Burnside, LA, owned by Almatis Inc. produced specialty alumina used in the abrasives, ceramics, chemical and refractory industries. The 1.2-Mt/a (1.32 million-stpy) refinery in Gramercy, LA, owned by Noranda Alumina LLC produced alumina mostly for use in aluminum smelters but also produced specialty alumina. An upgrade project at the Gramercy refinery to convert 200 kt/a (220,000 stpy) of capacity to produce more profitable specialty alumina was completed in the first half of 2018, and another project to increase capacity was started but a completion schedule was not available. The amount of new capacity was not disclosed, but it would be used to produce nonmetallurgical grade alumina. The 2.3-Mt/a (2.5 million-stpy) refinery in Point Comfort, TX, which was temporarily shut down in March 2016, remained closed throughout the year."

The purpose of this study was to examine the problems of underground coal mining in the United States, and to develop recommendations for an integrated Research and Development Program aimed at resolving these problems. Specific objectives of the study were as follows: ? To identify the existing inadequacies that have adverse effect on Health, Safety, External Environment, and Productivity. ? To identify opportunities for technological advance s to correct these inadequacies. ? To develop an integrated Research and Development Program designed to accomplish the advances identified. Many of the recommended tasks are dearly long range; this is especially true of those for study of future mining systems. However, funding recommendations in this Report are presented for a 5 -year period, since the developments accomplished during this period will undoubtedly be a factor in the formulation of the follow on tasks. Where applicable, the recommended Research and :Development could include development and test of pilot model equipment.

The purpose of this study is to determine worker acceptance of modified mine equipment at various intervals during a twelve month period. A survey instrument was administered to the workers by two experienced miners in four interviews. All four interviews showed a significant positive response to all modifications, except the small size of the cab of the shuttle car; however, the small size produced significant negative responses with respect to comfort in each of the four interviews. Initially, (interviews one and two), there were significant negative responses with respect to manufacturer receptivity to operator suggestions and program management follow-through on operator suggestions; however, the third and fourth interviews showed no significant negative responses with respect to these items. Likewise, there were significant neutral responses in the first two interviews; however, the third and fourth interviews showed no significant neutral responses with respect to these items.

"This paper presents a case history of evaluating the stability of a distressed earth bund and rectification measures carried out. A 5.45 km long, 7m high earth bund for drinking water storage was constructed in Andhra Pradesh. During construction of the bund following were observed – (a) a longitudinal crack at the downstream side (b) Bund on the downstream side along the crack settled to a max of 700 mm and (c) downstream rock toe level area raised by heave up to 175 mm. Investigation of the events made important contributions to the fundamental understanding of the behaviour of large earthworks of this type. It was found that the variation in subsoil strata was not addressed during the execution.After careful evaluation, stone columns were recommended as a suitable ground improvement technique. Stone columns were used as a reinforcement to improve the shearing resistance of foundation and in turn ensure stability. By using and applying advanced geotechnical engineering analysis tools and modelling techniques, earth bund and its foundation was analysed and examined against failure by slope instability. Stone column design was carried out using in-house computer program GEOSTONECOL and stability of earth bund was analysed using TALREN software. Earth bund construction was completed after ground improvement and is performing satisfactorily.INTRODUCTIONIn order to supply water during summer season, Government of Andhra Pradesh decided to construct a 7m high and 5.45km long earth bund summer storage tank. It was one of the largest earth bund summer storage tanks in whole of South India at the time of its construction. During construction, the earth bund has undergone sudden distresses. Investigation of the series of events occurred during construction has made important contributions to the fundamental understanding of the behaviour of large earthworks of this type. This paper presents the reasons for earth bund failure, slope stability assessment of the distressed earth bund and recommendation of stone column as a suitable ground improvement remediation technique.DESCRIPTION OF STUDY SITEThe characteristics of the original construction are briefly described as follows. A shallow cut-off trench was excavated below existing ground level at the centreline of bund as shown in Fig. 1. Below the base of the trench a cut-off grout curtain was installed. Upstream and downstream shell earth filling was carried out using Clayey Sand ‘SC’ type soil. At some locations, bottom of cut-off trench has reached as deep as 12m from the existing ground level."

The following review covers published information on pressing of metal powders at room temperature. Only those operations are considered which occur between the time the powder is filled into the cavity and the compact is ejected from the die. Thus, this review does not concern hot pressing, coining or sizing feed or flow problems, commercial presses nor designs. It was also necessary to disregard to a large extent the effect of pressing on subsequent operations and on properties after sintering. 'The pressing operation is considered independently in its function to compact loose metal powder into useful shapes which can subsequently be handled. There are some comments by the writer in connection with a few of the findings quoted in the literature in order to stimulate thought and discussion. The selection of references quoted in the text is in some cases arbitrary although an attempt was made to favor papers containing novel ideas, techniques or results which mag stimulate future research. In order to enable the reader to check further into the subjects mentioned, the original, rather extensive, bibliography is appended even though not all the references are touched on in the printed version of this review. The equipment used by various workers, for example a die design created by Bridgman,22 is very interesting. 'The die insert has a conical external surface. The vertical pressure exerted on the punch transmits itself to the die which in turn is pushed harder into its tapered retainer. Thus, the higher the pressure exerted on the punch, the higher also the pressure exerted inwards on the die inserts. Inasmuch as this pressure counteracts the internal pressure from the compact the two stresses balance each other so that it is possible to obtain tremendous pressures without breaking the die. The die collar was made from an oil hardening tool steel, heat treated to a tensile strength of some 300,000 psi. The die was closed at the bottom by a plug made from special tool steels. Bridgman found that there is no steel which will withstand a com-pressive stress of 700,000 psi without continuous slow flow or immediate fracture. Therefore, the only material suitable for use in the pressing punch was sintered carbide. In view of the ingenious design it was possible to use special tool steel as die material. Jones22 raises the question whether this method of pressing has practical application in powder metallurgy. Although these tremendous pressures cannot readily be utilized without many special precautions, the tapered die and retainer idea is believed to be useful even for lower pressures. In 1967 the United States consumed 58.8 quadrillion Btu of energy. Both the Atomic Energy Commission and the Resources for the Future, Inc., a private economic forecasting group, predict that the United States energy requirements will reach 135 quadrillion Btu by the year 2000. In 1967 bituminous coal produced 21.4 percent of the energy used in the United States and anthracite coal another 0. 5 percent. Coal Reserves Coal reserves make up about four-fifths of the United States storehouse of fuel in proven reserves. Seventy-five percent of all fuel, likely to be found and recovered is coal. Electric utilities consume more than half of the bituminous coal mined in the United States in generating 53 percent of the nation's electricity. Atomic Energy Commission analysts have proposed the development of a vast "national energy system" based upon long-distance electrical transmission from abundant untapped coal reserves in the western United States. The study predicts that even if uranium supplies are available and economic breeder reactors developed, coal requirements for electricity generation will more than double by 1980 and increase another 50 percent before the year 2000.

The Bureau of Mines is operated to assist in promoting economic development through increased efficiency in the mining, preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances; to aid in conserving mineral resources through preventing waste; and to help the mining industry improve health conditions and increase safety. Accomplishment of those ends is sought through investigation of scientific, technologic, and economic problems of the, mineral industries and dissemination of resulting information. Building materials of mineral origin constitute an important product of mining, and the Bureau makes studies of these in the various fields mentioned. The following commodities come within this classification: Asbestos, anhydrite, asphalt, cement, clay and clay products, diatomite, dolomite, glass and mineral wool, granite, greenstone, gypsum, lightweight building materials, lime, limestone, magnesite, marble, sand, sand and gravel, sandstone, sand-lime brick, slate, soapstone, and trap rock.

Next year marks the tenth anniversary of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA). As the U.S. coal industry scrambles to cope with serious economic difficulties, it is appropriate to examine some other difficulties that have their origin in certain provisions of that ten year old law, and that bear directly on the economic viability of surface coal mining in the west. This paper focuses briefly on three technical issues in the reclamation of surface coal mines in arid regions, and suggests that innovation can resolve these issues. The coal industry operates within a narrow legal context, defined in 1977. In enacting SMCRA, Congress listed among the purposes of the Act ?... to...strike a balance between protection of the environment, agricultural productivity and the Nation's need for coal as an essential source of energy." I maintain that such a balance has never been struck, particularly with regard to the reclamation of mines in the west. One reason is that when SMCRA was enacted its supporters were aware of uncertainties about the potential for successful reclamation of western surface mines. Over the intervening years, as a recent Congressional study report (OTA, 1986) points out, "...the risks these uncertainties may pose to the long term success of western reclamation have been reduced significantly." Unfortunately, SMCRA's enforcement agency, the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) has not yet recognized this fact, and the western coal industry is paying the price.

"Tungsten skarn deposits on the Clea property in the Selwyn Mountains, Y. T., are related genetically to a quartz monzonite stock, about 500 metres in diameter at the surface. Lower Paleozoic sedimentary rocks are metamorphosed for a distance of 3 km from the stock. Tungsten-bearing skarn mineralization within the altered sedimentary rocks is of two types: sulphide-rich pods and calc-silicate beds. The most significant scheelite concentration is in calc-silicate beds near or adjacent to the quartz monzonite stock. Discordant K-Ar and Rb-Sr isotopic dates indicate that the stock is probably of early Late Cretaceous age, 94 Ma or slightly older, and that it cooled slowly. High initial 87Srl86Sr ratios and disequilibrium relationships between K-jeldspar phenocrysts and groundmass minerals in the porphyritic phase of the granitic rock , and between different granitic rock specimens, indicate contamination of crystallizing magma by old sialic continental crust which extends westward under the Selwyn Basin.This study is significant to regional tungsten exploration. Granitic rocks associated with tungsten deposits, in this part of the Canadian Cordillera at least, appear to have specific isotope characteristics that indicate they were generated at a specific time and in a particular way.IntroductionThe Clea tungsten skarn property (Fig. I) is owned by Canex Placer Limited, and lies in the Selwyn Mountains (Bostock, 1948) near the eastern margin of the Selwyn Basin (Wheeler and Gabrielse, 1972), Yukon Territory. The property covers a 20-square-mile area centered near latitude 62°47 ' north and longitude 129°52' west, and is accessible by helicopter. An airstrip and the terminus of a summer-use gravel road at MacMillan Pass, Yukon, are about 20 miles to the northnorthwest.This paper deals mainly with the geochronemetry of granitic rocks from a stock associated with tungsten mineralization on the Clea property. We show that these rocks have specific characteristics that not only define the genesis of this stock, but also have significance for regional tungsten exploration around plutons in the Canadian Cordillera."

The human race has been exposed to copper for thousands of years, as copper and gold were the metals first used by man (1). if According to Ramazzini (2), "of all the metals that man's ingenuity has contrived to dig out of the bowels of the earth, iron and copper are the most useful, far more so than silver and gold." Workings of copper in the oldest known copper mine associated with the smelting of this metal have been traced back to 4300 B. C. Facts revealed by archeological research in India, Austria, Hungary, France, Italy, and Spain indicate that the use of copper probably began about 5000 B.C. (3), and that about 4000 B.C. a copper age came intermediate between the stone and bronze ages (4). Copper ores are rather widely distributed and are found in nearly every country. Many of the copper minas of Europe have been worked since before the Roman Empire. The must important mines in Europe occur in the district around Huelva, extending into Spain and Portugal. The German deposits are located mainly about Mansfeld (Rhenish Prussia); they have been worked continuously for 1,000 years. Some of the mines in Africa have been worked by the natives for centuries, and China has produced copper from shallow pits for thousands of years. India also has many ancient mines worked in the early centuries (2).

"Usually, steady state mass balances are used for the design of mineral processing plants. However, this tool does not take into account the impact of process inputs variability nor does it evaluate process transient behaviours between stationary states, such as mill start-up and shutdown. The use of advanced simulations enables the integration of dynamic behaviours in process design decision-making by highlighting situations that are undetectable by using only steady state mass balances. Applying these simulation tools to brown field projects allows the simulator performances to be calibrated and validated on actual plant data before it is used as a prediction tool for the modified plant.Three (3) simulators were implemented at the design stage of a major upgrade project for an ore processing plant in order to assess process behaviours under different production scenarios. These simulators were built to evaluate the impacts on major elements such as mine production, ore stockpile, concentrator production as well as water demand. A validation of individual equipment models was performed whenever sufficient measured data was available. The simulators were then used to study the impact of ore variability (grade, hardness, throughput), to assess day-to-day production special events, and to evaluate the true stockpiles live capacity.The use of a stochastic simulator for equipment sizing allowed a more precise sizing of many pieces of equipment and avoided important expenses in the fresh water pumping system. The dynamic simulator also confirmed that the water in place system would suffice, even in the most demanding production scenario. Finally, the stockpile simulator allowed an important production bottleneck to be quantified and then made possible the assessment of various practical solutions for the stockpiling-reclaiming issues.Post start-up, process data underlines the fact that using advanced simulation tools was useful to mitigate process-related risks associated to the plant expansion, showing generally accurate prediction and adequate equipment sizing, leading to smooth process commissioning. The presented methods are part of what is now routine in Soutex’s participation in both greenfield and brownfield projects."

QMAP (the Quarter Million Mapping Programme, 1:250 000 scale) is a geological mapping programme which will build a digital geological database of the whole country and publish maps and books to document it. The programme was established in 1993, following a recommendation by a review panel appointed by the Ministry of Research, Science & Technology, and is funded by the government, from the Public Good Science Fund. The relevance and fundamental value of QMAP lies in the greatly improved geological knowledge it will provide for researchers and other end-users of geological information.   QMAP research involves assessment of previous work, field and laboratory investigations in key areas, and data storage, manipulation and publication using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) computer technology. The QMAP digital database of New Zealand geology will be completed by 2006, as will the series of 21 full colour printed geological maps and accompanying explanatory texts. Two are already completed and published (Kaitaia and Dunedin), and six other projects are well advanced.   QMAP information will also be available in digital form. Next year we hope to expand the scope of the programme to cover the reconciling and linking of many other earth science databases to QMAP, because we believe this will create a powerful research tool. The intention is to develop internet access to the databases, to make the information publicly available.

This summary of State laws on explosives was compiled primarily to ascertain what subjects relating to their control have been acted upon by each State legislature and, in general, how they have been treated. It does not include any legislation passed after 1942, or any proclamations, regulations, or administrative orders. It does not purport or attempt to be authoritative. If any problem arises involving interpretation of the statutes of any particular State, the original source must be consulted for the exact words used by the legislature. This summary, however, will be useful in determining whether relevant statutes exist and in locating them quickly, with a minimum of effort. It will be of value also in comparing statutes in one State with similar statutes in other States to determine what construction has been placed upon them by the courts of those jurisdictions or to contrast the varying provisions of many States upon a single subject. Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook, published a book titled 'Lean In', where she invites women to sit at the table. In summary, to 'sit at the table' entails not only embracing opportunity, but to actively seek out opportunities in leadership positions. Sandberg points out that, unfortunately, apart from institutional obstacles, a woman's own perceived limitations have a negative impact on her leadership ambitions. To create an environment where diversity will flourish, where everyone has a seat at the table and everyone has a voice, safety must be established first. To establish safety within a diverse team, there is power in relationships and connections. This study will first and foremost review theories in literature as to why diversity and inclusion are so important and the value that diversity brings to our industry. The study also recommends a few focus areas for improving diversity and inclusion in the industry.

The influence of blasting on the excavators’ efficiency, defined as mucking rate (amount of rock mucked per unit time) and mean bucket load (amount of rock loaded in each bucket operation), is investigated. Rock characteristics, blasting parameters (drill pattern, explosive energy, and charging), and the excavator’s performance (truck loading time and number of buckets to fill a truck) were monitored in eleven blasts in an open pit iron ore mine. ANFO, ANFO/emulsion blend, and watergel were used in the blasts and the powder factor was varied between 0.98 and 1.45 kg/m3. The mean bucket load is mainly affected by the bucket size, which is independent of the blasting parameters. Besides the relation with the mean bucket load, the mucking rate was found to be positively correlated with the explosive energy, whereas no significant correlation with the rock properties was found. The analysis of the data, together with other published works, suggests a non-monotonic relation of the mucking rate with the powder factor, with a maximum mucking rate at a certain powder factor. This is especially true when the useful work of the explosive per unit rock volume is used rather than the classical mass powder factor and when only the amount of explosive above grade is considered.

The difficulties associated with wet-processing fine size coal led the Bureau of Mines to investigate a dry process for removing pyrite from coal pulverized to powerplant fineness. The dry process that was investigated consists of two cleaning steps: First, centrifugal separation is used to remove a fine, pyrite-depleted portion as a product; second, the remaining coarser, pyrite-enriched portion is taken to electrostatic separation in which pyrite is concentrated and rejected. Ball milling and Hardgrove milling were used to pulverize the coal. Three coals from the Pittsburgh seam were treated by the dry-removal process. Over 55 pct of the pyrite, which amounted to 70 pct of the available pyrite, was removed in a reject of 10 to 20 pct from one of the coals. Similar treatment of the other two coals removed about 35 to 50 pct of the pyritic sulfur, which amounted to about 70 pct of the available pyritie, sulfur from these coals. Both centrifugal and electrostatic separations were more efficient when pyrite particles were as large as possible. Separation efficiency was improved by confining the particle size of the feed to a relatively narrow range and by avoiding excessive amounts (more than 10 pct) of dust in the electrostatic range. The removal efficiency was increased with the use of stage grinding.

The resistance of yielding rockbolts to multiple impact loads was tested by means of a drop hammer. The methodology was based on the ASTM D7401-08 standard as well as the requirements specified for rockbolts by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB – a Swedish mining company) and the Safety In Mines Research Advisory Committee of South Africa (project number GAP 423). During the tests, the loading force and bolt elongation were measured with a sampling frequency of fs = 19.2 kHz. In order to analyse the phenomena involved, the tests were recorded using two independent high-speed video cameras (600 and 1000 frames per second) and one thermal camera (128 frames per second). The tests demonstrated that all the samples transferred double the gravitational potential energy of Ep = 50.85 kJ from the impact load of mass m = 2825 kg and impact velocity of v = 6.0 m/s without failure. Damage to the bolt-resin contact in the upper anchoring zone of the bolt in the steel tube occurred after subsequent impacts. As a result, the macro-deformed bolt exhibits additional yield, and its operation following the shearing of the resin bond is similar to that of a ‘cone bolt’. Only one test resulted in damage to the threaded bolt rod-nut coupling, during the fourth impact; however, no damage to the bolt-resin contact zone was observed.

Although Peirce-Smith converting remains the workhorse in matte converting, the copper and nickel industries are still confronted with production hindrances such as tuyere blockage, excessive refractory wear and limits in the oxygen enrichment levels of the blast air. The knowledge acquired on high-pressure gas injection technology as well as the invention of the concentric tuyere for steelmaking led to the development of the Air Liquide Shrouded Injector (ALSI) technology for copper and nickel converting. Following a technology demonstration in 1997-98 with four shrouded injectors installed in a Peirce-Smith converter, Falconbridge Limited implemented ALSI Technology on a commercial scale in May 1999 as an integral part of its new Slag Make Converter at Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The paper presents the various aspects of commissioning ALSI Technology, as well as the operating changes and injector design modifications over the five years the shrouded injectors have been in operation.
