Crucial information about safety, design, and operation can be utilized in underground mines from ground movement data. Communicating the information and exploring new findings can be a challenge in a decade where there is an ever-increasing volume and velocity of data due to advancements in mining technologies. This challenge escalates for geotechnical data as it is multidimensional, depending on the space and the rate it takes place. To tackle this challenge, geotechnical engineers should focus on utilizing simple yet compelling visualization of rock mass data in 3D. Competent visualizations of ground conditions as a Trigger Action and Response Plan (TARP) could ease the communication of safety concerns and the exploration of rock mass displacement and strain surrounding an opening at an underground mine. Therefore, this study focuses on using scientific visualization methods by rendering geotechnical data over the surface of a 3D mesh model to display TARP levels. The study is conducted at the San Xavier (SX) Underground Mine Laboratory’s East decline. The project aims to produce visualizations that optimize the use of geotechnical data in near-real-time.

MANY papers and reports have been devoted to the geology and ore deposits of the Ducktown district, Tennessee, especially the complete report by W. H. Emmons and F. B. Laney, published as Professional Paper 139, by the U. S. Geological Survey. The present paper discusses the work of the geological organization of the Tennessee Copper Co., which is based on the field work of the above paper and the consulting work of W. H. Emmons. The Ducktown basin lies in the southeastern corner of Tennessee and extends a short distance into Georgia and North Carolina. All productive mines are contained in an area of 15 sq. mi. in the center of this basin, which is an undulating plateau at an elevation of 1650 to 1800 ft. above sea level. It is surrounded by the relatively high mountains of the southern Appalachian region. The rocks are of early Cambrian age. Deposition of the ores probably took place during the latter part of the Paleozoic era. The ore deposits are rudely tabular to lens-shaped bodies of massive sulfide, varying from a few feet to over 200 ft. in width. In general they all strike northeast and dip southeast at angles from 45° to 70°. Locally, where affected by folding and faulting, the variations in dip may be even greater. The lodes usually are parallel at distances of from one-half to one mile measured normal to the strike. The deposits are a replacement of a fairly continuous bed or a series of disconnected limestone lenses, highly folded and somewhat faulted, which probably represent the same stratigraphic horizon.

The development of a sampling instrument for the assessment of an underground coal miner’s exposure to airborne respirable coal mine dust on a continuous and real-time basis has been long identified as essential for timely initiation of control actions. A respirable dust dosimeter (RDD) which operates on the principle of increasing pressure across a filter media with increasing dust mass on the filter has been developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Comparisons of the performance of the RDD with an U.S. approved gravimetric respirable dust sampler (GRD) have shown that the RDD may meet the requirements for measuring miners’ exposures on a cumulative, near real-time basis such as mid-shift and end of shift exposures. Recently, the performances of the RDD and GRD were compared by conducting side-by-side area sampling experiments in a controlled experimental environment in the laboratory and in underground coal mines under normal operating conditions. In this paper, the results from the in-mine study are presented and discussed. The experimental design for the in-mine study included two mines in different coal seams in different geographic coal regions. To ensure a wide range of concentrations, the experiments were conducted in a continuous miner section in Mine 1, and a longwall face in Mine 2. Airborne dust sampling was conducted for four different shifts at each mine. In each shift, two samples of different exposure durations were collected from two different locations. Each sample consisted of the readings of three dosimeters and the exposed filters from the three paired GRD samplers. As a result, a total of 96 comparative samples were obtained, 48 for each mine. The data were analyzed for the precision of the RDD and GRD measurements and for the relationships between the differential pressure of the RDD and the mass of dust on the paired GRD filter. The analyses indicate that, on the average, the RDD and the GRD track the airborne respirable dust concentrations well, exhibiting both a high correlation between the two measurements and a reliable predictive relationship of one from the other. Details of the experimental design, data analyses procedures, results, conclusions and recommendations of the underground experiments are presented in this paper.

WHEN during the war the Navy Department decided to build an armor-plate and gun-forging plant of its own at South Charleston, W. Va., one of the most important units of the equipment proposed was a 14,000 gross ton forging-press to be used for forging, bending, and rectifying battleship armor-plate and making hol¬low forgings for large caliber guns. A press suitable for doing this kind of work was put into operation in the fall of 1921 and was operated successfully on armor-plate and large forgings until the closing down of the ordnance plant following the Limitation of Armament Conference held in Washington, February, 1922. PURPOSE OF THE PRESS There are three methods by which armor-plate can be made, namely, hammering, forging, and rolling the ingot. Each method produces a different result in the mechanical working of the steel. The hammer was eliminated as impractical from an operating standpoint. The first armor-plate made in this country was worked under a hammer at the Bethlehem Steel Co., between the years 1891 and 1893, but was superseded by forging when the large press was completed in 1893. Harry T. Morris of the Bethlehem Steel Co. informs me that the 1.25-ton steam hammer began operations in 1891 and was in operation for about two years. The Carnegie Steel Co. and the Midvale Steel and Ordnance Steel Co. also forged armor-plate. Certain European manufacturers rolled the plates from large slab ingots, after removing the sink-head and giving the body of the ingot a light pass under a hydraulic press. While rolling accomplished more mechanical work on the surface of an armor plate, forging, on the other hand, resulted in a greater amount of work in the interior of the plate. Either type of equipment involved an enormous expendi¬ture, so it was deemed advisable to adopt the method which would make it possible to use the equipment for more than one purpose. Since g large rolling-mill could be used only for the single operation of rolling armor-plate, a press was decided on, for the reason that it might be designed so as to forge armor, as well as bend and rectify it, and also be used in the forging of ingots for large caliber guns, both in the form of hollow forgings and also solid shafts.

Data are presented for oil produced in 1971 from fields in 26 States that accounted for about 76 percent of total U.S. oil production; the foreign data cover fields in 24 foreign countries that accounted for about 64 percent of the total oil produced from these countries in 1971. Most of the data are presented in tabular form.

The Investigation shows that there are six coal beds of major importance in McDowell County from the standpoint of present production - Pocahontas No. 3, Pocahontas No. 4, Pocahontas No. 5, Sewall, Beckley, and Pochontas No. 6 - and five beds of minor importance - Iaeger, Douglas, Welch, Pocahontas, No. 9, and Eagle. The Pocahontas No. 3 bed contains the largest remaining, known reserves. 2. Known measured, and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 174 inches and on 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 2,217 Trillion short tons as of January 1, 1951. Of this total, 1,731 million short tons are in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these area, such reserves should be added to he total estimated reserves.

Cameroon continued to enjoy sustained economic growth that began with its independence in 1960. Growth in the gross domestic product (GDP) averaged 2.8% per year during the 1960's and the first half of the 1970's. Starting in 1976 and for the succeeding 10 years, the GDP accelerated rapidly owing to the coming on-stream of Cameroon's small but domestically significant offshore oil industry. In 1985, the GDP grew by 7.8%, but in 1986, it was only up 5.5%. The country's sustained economic growth in dollar terms of gross national product (GNP) per capita reached $1,075 in 1986. The ranking in GNP per capita by the International Monetary Fund put Cameroon in the middle-income category for developing countries. The sustained economic growth rate up to 1986 was due to the injection of income from oil into the economy, but crude oil price reductions in 1986 brought a slowdown. In 1986, crude oil production grew to 200,000 barrels per day, an increase of 8.2% from that of 1985. Most of the oil came from the Société Nationale Elf Aquitaine (SNEA) wells in the multifield Rio del Rey complex. Additional output came from the Moudi Field operated by Compagnie Française des Pétroles S.A. Proven oil reserves in Cameroon were 540 million barrels. At 1986 production rates, and in the absence of further discoveries, Cameroon will have exhausted its recoverable oil reserves by the year 1995. Owing to worldwide crude price reductions, the country's oil income fell 60% between 1985 and 1986, from $1.82 billion2 to $0.72 billion. Cameroon's refinery operator commenced operating the Sonara refinery in 1981 at Point Limboh. Sonara's capacity of 43,000 barrels per day was small by most standards. In 1986, natural gas reserves, estimated at 100 billion cubic meters, were not produced commercially because there were no domestic users. Proposals for a multibillion-dollar liquefied natural gas plant at Kribi had been submitted; however, work on the plant had not commenced.

The selective placement of coal stripmine overburden is examined. Physical and chemical properties of spoil detrimental to revegetation and groundwater are detailed. The United States is divided into regions or similar problems. Five mining methods already used in the industry, that are capable of selectively handling waste are examined in detail. Technical and economic comparisons are made for the systems when applied to realistic mine settings. The same analysis is conducted for five novel methods capable of selectively handling waste. Comparisons are made between novel and existing methods. Suggestions for new and modified equipment are outlined. Recommendations for further research are provided. This volume contains all Appendices to the report.

O uso de blocos de solo-cimento é considerado um método construtivo mais barato do que o convencional, visto que uma das matérias-primas, o solo, é abundante. Soma-se a isto, o fato de não haver uma destinação correta para o resíduo proveniente da fabricação de papel. Visando redução de custo de produção de tijolos de solo-cimento e uma alternativa sustentável para aproveitamento do resíduo, a proposta do presente trabalho é avaliar a incorporação do resíduo da fabricação de papel na mistura solo-cimento para confecção de tijolos modulares prensados com dimensões de 30cmx15cmx7cm. Foram testadas diferentes proporções de solo e resíduo e mantendo sempre a mesma massa de cimento. Foram realizados ensaios de absorção de água e resistência à compressão aos 28 dias de cura. Os resultados foram analisados a fim de verificar a viabilidade da incorporação do resíduo nos tijolos em maior quantidade possível, obedecendo as exigências impostas pelas normas regulamentadoras de blocos de solo-cimento. Foi concluído que a incorporação do resíduo, em quantidades adequadas, é viável na produção de tijolos de solo-cimento, reduzindo o custo da produção, além de diminuir os impactos ambientais com o destino correto do resíduo.

Ball mill liners perform two main functions in grinding process: protect the mill shell from the aggressive milling environment and delivery input power to the charge. When it comes to liners optimization the challenge are to prolong the service life and improve grinding performance. Some liners characteristics such as A / B ratio, lifters number, lifter height, and attack angle are extremely relevant to grinding process. By analyzing process data, and through DEM simulations application, these parameters were improved on W-mill liner, located at Vazante concentration plant. The new profile promoted a reduction of power variability between the final and the initial life cicle intervals and, therefore, better stability to circuit operation. In addition, the new liner service life reached 21,603 hours, 25% higher compared to the previous one in use. This optimized profile therefore proved to be able to improve its functions by achieving superior process performance combined with longer service life.

Industrial minerals contribute about 50% of the NZ$1.2 billion generated annually by the minerals industry in New Zealand. The value is supplemented by a further NZ$500 million of minerals imported to supply our vital agricultural and industrial activity. As globalisation of the world's economy precedes, sources of minerals are being processed by fewer companies giving an ever-increasing control over global markets. If only to protect its primary production New Zealand needs to aggressively develop its mineral resources. The successful development of a deposit requires identification of the preferred market. While low-value aggregates dominate New Zealand industrial mineral production it is more specialised minerals supplied to the manufacturing and industrial sectors that provide more value per tonne. Minerals that have highly desirable intrinsic properties, or through value-added processing provide desirable properties, have the ability to fill niche markets both locally and overseas. Research and development towards enhancement or creation of desirable mineral properties could benefit New Zealand with both increased mineral potential and export of technological information. But, it is nearly always the market not the resource that dictates the viability of an industrial mineral and, with the globalisation of industrial mineral markets resulting in fewer but larger companies, any supplier must be ready to explore niche markets in order to compete on a more global basis.

The machine-mounted continuous respirable dust monitor (MMCRDM) is a fixed-location area sampling device developed for possible use at the working face of an underground coal mine. This device, based on proprietary technology known as the tapered element oscillating microbalance, has evolved over the past eight years through a cooperative effort of the former Bureau of Mines, MSHA, and the Rupprecht & Patashnick Company in Albany, NY. The capability to measure respirable coal mine dust levels on a continuous basis, rather than depending solely on periodic samples obtained from the traditional coal mine dust samplers, has been a goal in the mining industry for nearly two decades. Recently, an extensive series of laboratory and underground tests was conducted by NIOSH with the cooperation of MSHA and coal operators to test the performance of the MMCRDM In preliminary laboratory testing, the MMCRDM seemed to work well. However, in every underground test, when compared to reference samplers placed close to the inlet, the MMCRDM failed to meet the 25% accuracy criterion specified in the contract under which it was developed. Two reasons explain this failure: First, in most tests the bias (the relative discrepancy between the average MMCRDM concentration and the average reference sampler concentration) was too great. Second, the variability of the samplers used for reference comparison was too large. Finally, the underground testing of the MMCRDMs showed that they are quite unreliable at this stage of development. In the majority of mine tests, no more than 10 shifts of data were taken before the MMCRDM failed to function properly. Major breakdowns, requiring the return of the MMCRDM to the factory for repairs, occurred on average every 28 days. To be considered mine-worthy, MMCRDM reliability must be substantially improved. The Mitsubishi process is the sole pyrometallurgical process for the continuous production of blister copper from copper concentrates and has been successfully operated around the world. The development of calcium ferrite slag (CaO-FeOx-Cu20), the so-called "C-slag", has enabled continuous converting from matte to blister copper in the commercial scale operations. Commercial interests in the slag led to many papers over the CaO-FeOx slag. However, CU2O- bearing slag has not been studied well due to experimental difficulties. The authors have quantified the thermodynamic properties ofthe CaO-FeOx-Cu2O system. The results have been utilized to analyze various issues related to the converting furnace, such as the magnetite precipitation from the slag or from blister copper and to develop better controlling criteria for the continuous converting operation.

Objective: Workers with hearing loss face special problems, especially when working in noise. How­ever, conventional hearing conservation practices do not distinguish between workers with normal hearing versus impaired hearing. This study col­lected information from workers with self-reported noise exposure and hearing loss, supervisors of such workers, and hearing conservation program managers through focus groups and in-depth inter­views to evaluate their perspectives on the impact of hearing loss on safety and job performance, the use of hearing protection, and information needed to appropriately manage hearing-impaired workers who work in noisy environments. Results: Concerns about working in noise with a hearing loss could be grouped into the following 10 categories: impact on job performance, impact on job safety, impaired ability to hear warning signals, impaired ability to monitor equipment, interfer­ence with communication, stress and/or fatigue, impaired communication caused by hearing protec­tor use, reduced ability to monitor the environment as the result of hearing protector use, concerns about future quality of life, and concerns about future employability. Mostly, there was an agree­ment between the perceptions of workers, supervi­sors, and hearing conservation program managers regarding difficulties associated with hearing loss and consequent needs. These findings suggest that noise-exposed workers with hearing loss face many of the same problems reported in the literature by noise-exposed workers with normal hearing, with additional concerns primarily about job safety as the result of a reduced ability to hear environmental sounds, warning signals, and so forth. Conclusions: The study outlines potential chal­lenges regarding job safety and hearing conserva­tion practices for noise-exposed, hearing-impaired workers. Awareness of these issues is a necessary first step toward providing appropriate protective measures for noise-exposed, hearing-impaired workers. Of the 19 million adults in the United States with some degree of hearing trouble, nearly half are currently employed in the workforce (NCHS, 1994). More than 30 million US workers are exposed to hazardous noise levels, and noise-induced hearing loss is the most common occupational disease in the United States (NIOSH, 1996). Many workers incur their hearing losses during the first 5 to 10 yrs of employment (Rosler, 1994; Ward et al., 2000) and subsequently work the rest of their careers in an environment where noise and hearing loss interact to impair their ability to hear communication and other important signals. Workers with hearing loss who are exposed to hazardous noise levels present a dilemma to hearing loss preventionists. On the one hand, it is of great importance to ensure that their residual hearing is protected from the damaging effects of the noise to which they are exposed. On the other hand, how­ever, traditional hearing protectors serve to further “deafen” such workers, making communication more difficult and impairing the detection of environmen­tal sounds and warning signals. These workers have special needs that must be addressed. However, conventional hearing conservation practices do not distinguish between workers with normal versus impaired hearing; and, to date, no governmental or professional organization has developed specific guidelines or policies concerning the accommodation of noise-exposed, hearing-impaired workers. Some research regarding noise-exposed, hearing-impaired workers has been completed. These studies have primarily focused on three areas: (a) speech intelligibility in noise versus quiet, with and without various types of hearing protection devices (Abel et al., 1982; Abel et al., 1993; Abel & Spencer, 1997; Rink, 1979; Suter, 1989); (b) signal detection and localization under similar conditions (Abel et al., 1993; Abel et al., 1985; Abel & Hay, 1996); and (c) the use of hearing aids as hearing protectors (Berger, 1986; Dolan & Maurer, 1996; Hétu et al., 1992; Hétu et al., 1993). Research in these three areas has provided an initial framework for development of a management para­digm for these workers. The COALSTAR Project, which operated from November 1981 to December 1982, was a research and development project aimed at providing a reliable and inexpensive means of monitoring various waste site conditions via the GOES satellite system. The GOES system provides data transfer from unattended isolated sites where neither power nor telephone lines exist. The reliability and resolution of the data received while using the satellite link were excellent; however, the site instrumentation gave considerable trouble. The disastrous failure of a large coal waste embankment in 1972 led the Bureau of Mines to undertake a comprehensive program to reduce the likelihood of such an occurence again. Part of this program involved the installation of instruments to monitor the stability of a specially-selected embankment operated by Armco Incorporated near Montcoal, West Virginia. Initially, the instruments were monitored by normal telephone lines and used normal commercial power from the local utility. The project described here was initiated to replace this monitoring system with an unmanned, solar-powered data collection system which transmitted data via satellite to a central computer facility. The satellite data network is the National Earth Satellite Service of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Blasting is widely used in mining and basic construction because of its speed and economy to destroy the rocks. Blasting has the advantages of reduced excavation costs and shorted construction time when compared to the use of heavy machinery for excavation and cutting such as that with a tunnel boring machine. There are numerous problems with blasting, including the noise, vibration and fly rock. So it is necessary to accurately evaluate fracture mechanics of rocks on the dynamic loading condition to control the fracture process of the blasting. The tests using Hopkinson's effect for the dynamic condition using the precise detonators were performed for various strain rates on three different kinds of rocks. In the tests using Hopkinson's effect for the dynamic condition, the high-speed camera was used to observe the fracture process of the test sample rocks. As the results of experiments there was an increase in the tensile strength of rock with an increase in the strain rate for three kinds of rock on the dynamic loading. The tensile strength of rocks with high porosity on the water saturation condition was decreased on the both static and dynamic condition. It is clear that the strain rate and water saturation were influenced to the tensile strength of the rocks.

In 1985, at the request of Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied a 54,480-acre portion of the 93,205-acre Dry Valley Rim Wilderness Study Area (CA-020-615), in order to evaluate its identified resources. The area studied is in Washoe County, NV, and Lassen County, CA, about 35 miles east of Susanville, CA. No metallic resources were identified. The Red Rock and Willow Springs areas contain 85 million tons of altered basalt with zeolite amygdules. This material, averaging more than 50 percent chabazite, constitutes a subeconomic zeolite resource. This zeolite-bearing material would require beneficiation to upgrade it for higher value uses. Natural zeolites have a small market in the United States, which is presently supplied by other higher grade material. There is low probability that these resources will be mined in the foreseeable future. The Capricorn claims, adjacent to the study area, are on alluvial sediments containing more than 30 percent montmorillonoid clays. The material is not usable as pozzolan and was not tested for other uses such as absorbency, oil clarification, or insecticide carrier. The term pozzolan refers to a number of siliceous materials which are combined with portland cement to enhance the physical properties of the resultant concrete. The area is remote from market and contains low value material. It is improbable that this occurrence will be mined in the foreseeable future.
